I

From The VIRPCA Executive would like to thank our out-going Executive members Imogen Burr, Rajesh Rao and Don Munro. Each one of these members have dedicated hours upon hours to the club and have been invaluable assets. Remember we are all volunteers.

We also have four new Executive members this year. Tim Evans, Dave Nickel, John McGurran and Dean Aikenhead. I hope you will join me and welcoming them, I believe we have a very strong Executive that will lead to an exciting year for our Vancouver Island Region.

We had a lot of enthusiasm at the AGM this year. The ballot box had to come out on two occasions, it is very exciting to see so much interest in volunteering for the Club. On that note, I would like to thank Paul Atterton and Derek Nickel for showing interest in running for the Executive. I would like to invite any member who wishes to be more involved in the club to join us at executive meetings or talk to any executive member. There are a lot of opportunities to help out. The next club meeting will be on December 4th, 12:00 noon at the Best Western across the highway from The Duncan Forest Museum. This meeting will be a planning meeting for 2017. All members are welcome and are encouraged to come out and have input in the club’s events for the new year .

hope you like the cover picture this month of Bryce Holtz. It was taken at the VIMC track when he, I and some other Porsche customers were trying out the new 718 Boxsters courtesy of Porsche Centre Victoria and Porsche Canada in October. Bryce (and Dianne) has supported VIRPCA since its inception and is a founding member, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to put him on the cover as it is his 27th membership anniversary this month!

ello, my name is John McGurran and I am your Membership Director on the Executive for 2017, taking over from Imogen Burr and the great work she did in this portfolio over the past two years.

Membership is the cornerstone of the PCA (Porsche Club of America). In fact PCA is the largest non-factory-supported, independent, single marque sports car club in the world. Members are typically Porsche owners who reside in the USA and Canada. Our Vancouver Island Region is among the fastest growing. Last year we grew from 369 to 432 members: a 17% increase. By comparison, Canadian Porsche sales through October 2016, according to Desrosiers, increased 8.3%. Not bad, but we are better, eh. More on this subject in future columns. While my job is to monitor and report on membership issues for the Executive, I ask for your help in bringing new members into the fold. Do you know someone with Porsche ownership intentions or aspirations? Of course you do. Tell them about the PCA Test Drive program. For $40 they get six months access to PANORAMA and defined access to browse the online Mart to find their Porsche. Finally, we recognize your loyalty! As an Active Member completes 5, 10, 15, or 20 years of membership, the National Office will send a special decal indicating the length of membership. Members completing 25 years will receive a special silver ringed decal indicating length of membership. Members completing 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, or more, years of membership will receive a special gold ringed decal indicating length of membership. There are other forms of member recognition and I will touch on them in the future. Happy motoring.

Your New Executive Members John McGurran—Membership Director

I

have been a member of the Vancouver Island Region of PCA for three years and joined the Executive as Secretary in 2015.

I look forward to serving the club as Membership Director in 2017 where my goal is to help improve our members’ experience of their cars and of the club through our touring, social and competitive events. By the way, I have the perfect car: a 2001 996 C4 which, with summer and winter wheel sets, serves as my daily driver. In addition to its awe-inspiring driving characteristics it is large enough to hold a double bass. Bet you did not know that!

Tim Evans—Treasurer

I

have been a member of the Porsche Club since 2014, when I purchased my first Porsche, a 1986 Carrera. The Carrera is now gone but it was replaced with a Guards Red 1986 944 Turbo, which comes with a great story I’ll save for another time.

I was born and raised in Victoria and after attending Camosun College I worked in the banking industry in Vancouver for 11 years before returning to Victoria to take up a job in finance at BC Ferries. After a 28-year career there, I retired at the end of 2013. I have owned a few sports cars in my time, but after retirement I decided it was time to get a Porsche. Knowing a few Porsche owners who were part of the Porsche club, it sounded like a great group, and with a Porsche in the garage, we (my wife, Marilyn, is an associate member) paid our membership and joined PCA. Since joining, we have enjoyed many driving events and get-togethers, including attending Black Rock in 2015 and Whistler Weekend this past August. That’s what makes the Porsche Club such a great group, friendly people and good times! I’m looking forward to being a part of the executive for 2017 and hope to meet a lot of you at upcoming events. I

started off my career in the 1970’s at BCIT becoming an Electronics Technologist. Worked my way through several companies in Vancouver and became a Programmer Analyst. My wife and I decided to have/raise our children in a smaller town so we quit our jobs and moved to Campbell River in 1989. We bought a jewellery store and ran that for 12 years where I became a Goldsmith. I currently work for Telus as a Network Tech bringing the joys of IP to everyone. Cars were late in life, I bought the last new TR7 in Vancouver and sold it 10 months later due to rust, grinding gears and Lucas Prince of Darkness. In 2007 I bought a friend’s 944 and got the bug with my son Derek’s help; he forced me to join this little club I had never heard of Soon followed by the 944 S2 and the 968 that we tastefully modded and supercharged! Now if I had only bought a 993 when they were ½ price….

Canada West Whistler Weekend

O

ne of the great benefits of belonging to a car club are the events that are organized for its members. This year, Marilyn and I decided to take in the Porsche get together at Whistler on August 2628. The annual event is hosted by the Canada West region based out of the lower Mainland and the Pacific Northwest Region which includes Washington and Oregon. On Friday morning we packed up our 1986 944 turbo and headed over to the mainland on the 8am ferry out of Swartz Bay and then an uneventful drive through Vancouver and up to Whistler. The weather was sunny and on the warm side but we made it there without a problem which is never a sure thing in a thirty year old car.

We checked into the Aspen Lodge, parked the car and headed into the village for a late lunch. After walking around the village and taking in the sights we headed back to the lodge to get ready for registration and the opening night barbeque and meet and greet. By now the lodge entrance and parking lot is full of Porsches of all kinds and made for quite a show for the rest of the guests. The evening get together of almost two hundred attendees was a fun time with the opportunity to meet new people from all over and of course talk about our cars, where they were from, and what events they were participating in. We had decided we would be in the Show & Shine on Saturday in the village along with the cars in the concours judging, the Saturday night Banquet at the Fairmont Chateau, and the Sunday drive to Lillooet on the infamous Duffy Lake Road.

Saturday morning greeted us with sunshine as we made our way to the upper village square to get the car in place and do some final preparation for the Show & Shine. This is always a fun time with everyone prepping their cars and of course people looking and what and how others are doing it. We managed to get it done quickly and get over to the area where the cars entered in the concours judging were set up and take in some very well prepared and beautiful cars. Now those guys are very methodical in their preparation and you have to admire their efforts in getting ready for the judges. I always manage to stick my nose in and get some detailing tips along the way and appreciate their patience in taking the time to share their knowledge. Now it was time to head down to the lower village and get some breakfast and check out what was happening . One of (Continued on page 11)

the highlights for Marilyn was the opportunity to check out the new Audain Art Museum which had just opened in April. The building is impressive in itself and after viewing the display inside I will admit It was worth it. Later in the afternoon the cars were on their way back to the lodge and I was ready for a siesta and down time before the banquet that evening. The banquet was a formal event and our table included folks from the US, lower mainland, interior, and Alberta so there was no shortage of conversation. We were lucky enough to be an early table to the buffet where there was a good variety and everything tasted fantastic. The evening activities included a presentation of the new Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit, the Concours and Show & Shine awards, and the drawing of the door prizes. Sadly we didn’t win anything in the Show & Shine and we missed out on the grand prize which was trip for two to Germany including a tour of the Porsche museum. I thought for sure we would get a special prize for being the only front engine Porsche there. We didn’t go home empty handed though as Marilyn did win a Porsche, a 917k diecast. Sunday was the drive to Lillooet and with over forty cars attending we were divided into two groups. The drive was organized by the Pacific Northwest Region and I must say they did an excellent job. The drive up to Lillooet was great fun with some spirited driving and some very courteous RV’s that pulled over to let us by. In Lillooet we arrived at the Fort Berens Winery where we were treated to a wonderful lunch on their patio with great views of the vineyard. Of course we purchased some wine to enjoy at home. The drive back proved to be equally enjoyable and again we had the opportunity to exercise the cars on occasion. Sunday evening we decided we would take a break from all things Porsche and heading out to dinner on our own down in Creekside and tried the Red Door Bistro and that proved to be a culinary delight as well, we highly recommend it. Monday morning it was time to head back to Victoria after saying a few good byes, exchanging email addresses and checking out of the lodge. As we headed out on the Sea to Sky Highway we talked about how much fun we had, how friendly everyone was, and we look forward to keeping in touch with new friends. We will definitely be back.

Front Fall Clean up Routine

W

hen was the last time you cleaned your radiator? If you do not clean out in-between your condenser and radiator the build up of leafs and gunk will lead to rust and eventually get bad enough you will have to replace your radiator. This will be a fairly simple DIY to clean your radiator and A/C condenser. This process was done on my 2003 Boxster S, however it is very similar for every 986 / 996 and even the 987 / 997.

Time : 1 hour You will need :T25 Torx bit screwdriver Lubricant

Philips bit screwdriver Shop vac

Flat bit screwdriver Safety glasses

8 mm socket

Your first step will be to decide if you are going to jack up your car or not. I decided not to as my driveway has a slight incline that gives me a bit more room under the car. Step 1: Open your trunk and turn the four small fasteners 90 degrees with your flat screw driver.

1

Step 2 Once you have rotated the fasteners, remove the black plastic cover Step 3: With the cover removed you will see two Philips screws near either end. Remove these.

2

4

Step 4: Turn your wheels all the way to one side. Look at your wheel, you will see three plastic rivets. Spray the rivets with lubricant. I used my flat head screw driver to pry the rivets out. Step 5: Remove your side markers ( pull out from the wheel end) once removed you will see a Philips screw, this will need to be removed.

5

6

Step 6 : Pull back the wheel liner from the front bumper. Looking at the underside of where the side marker would be you will see another Philips screw that will need to be removed. On the early 986 the next fasteners will be Philips on my car they where T25. Under the bumper will be two screws on either side remove these. If you did not jack your car up you will need a short screw driver. PORSCHER — NOVEMBER 2016

Page 13

Step 7: Remove the rest of the fasteners from under the bumper. Step 8: You are now ready to pull the bumper off. Pull straight off. Step 9: Remove the plastic ducting. There will be 5 bolts on either side. There are no bolts for the center duct. Step 10: Use your shop vac to clean the air conditioning condenser. Step 11: Remove the two bolts and separate the condenser from the radiator. Clean in between them. Never use a power washer to try clean the radiators. As you can see by the picture the previous owner tried and bent some of the fins. Step 12: Rinse with the hose and then put everything back together.

an 8-quart or larger Dutch oven (preferably enameled cast iron) over medium-high heat. Sear the beef cubes until browned and crusty on two sides, working in batches to avoid crowding the pan. With tongs or a slotted spoon, transfer the browned beef to a bowl. During searing, it’s fine if the pan bottom gets quite dark, but if it smells like it’s burning, reduce the heat a bit. If the pan ever gets dry, add a little more oil. Once all the beef is seared and set aside, add the onions and peppers to the pan, along with the bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, chili powders, cumin, and cloves and cook, stirring, until the spices coat the vegetables and are fragrant, 15 to 30 seconds. Add ground beef and ground pork, sauté med high heat till fully cooked. Slowly add the beer while scraping the pan bottom with a wooden spoon to dissolve the coating of spices. Simmer until the beer is reduced by about half and the mixture has thickened slightly, 5 to 7 min. Add the beef, along with any accumulated juices and the beef broth. Bring to a simmer and then reduce the heat to medium low. Simmer, partially covered for 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Test a cube of meat—you should be able to cut it with a spoon. Discard the cinnamon sticks and bay leaves. If not serving immediately, chill overnight. The next day, skim any fat from the top, if necessary, before reheating. To serve, heat the chili gently. Using a slotted spoon, transfer about 2 cups of the beef cubes to a plate. Shred the meat with a fork and return it to pot. (The shredded meat will help create a thicker texture). Taste and add more salt if needed. Heat the beans in a medium bowl covered with plastic in the microwave (or heat them gently in a saucepan). Arrange the beans, chopped red onion, tomatoes, cilantro, and sour cream in small bowls to serve as garnishes with the chili.

e had 24 members/affiliates, plus a very excitable new Boxster owner, Scott, who arrived just as we were leaving for our drive to 40 Knots Winery. He wants to join the club and he is quite the character. He bought his Boxster at a car lot on the north side of Duncan. A couple who drive a Corvette, saw my article in the Comox Valley Record newspaper, bought two bags of towels from our local thrift store to the event. They are friends of Harvey McDougall. Oh Yes, I had some dog treats for our “poster boy“ Eddie, Harvey’s Golden Doddle (see picture right). Brenda, the 40 Knots owner did an amazing job of presenting their wines, including Port and Sparkling, which everyone enjoyed, and most took something home with them. We then proceeded to lunch at Crown Isle and had the whole dining room to ourselves, with prompt service and nice food. I had Porsche posters, 7 draw prizes, including 4 bags from the Porsche Classic event at Porsche Centre Victoria, with the coveted 911 paper clips, and 3 decorator boxes sourced from our home, 2 contained wine, and the other had a bottle of German Beer. Cindy Mui, GAIN Group kindly donated one night’s accommodation, including breakfast at “Villa Eyrie” www.villaeyrie.com, which we auctioned off as a donation to the Comox Valley S.P.C.A. The winner of the action was Ronell Bosman, Nanaimo. Cash donations received, “Villa Eyrie” Gift Certificate auction and one cat game I contributed, our total was $218 at the half-way stage, plus 6 BIG bags of towels! All and all, a good day, everything went as planned, no speeding tickets, and I got a round of applause at lunch. I think this should be an annual event up here, but in the summer. But it did not end there, “PORSCHES HELPING PETS” then went on the road, to our A.G.M. & Year End Luncheon, Sunday November 20th at the amazing “Villa Eyrie” at the summit of the Malahat. We had gathered some items for a Silent Auction:- a Martini Racing Team jacket from 2011 Rennsport Reunion donated by John Clark, Comox, Reversible Porsche Driver Selection Toque/Scarf and Porsche Cayenne Turbo Metal paperweight, donated by Paul Rossmo, Porsche Centre Victoria, Maple Burl Jewellery Box, donated by Wendy Woodley, two Pull back GT3RS Toy Porsches and framed Porsche poster signed by artist Steve Andersen, donated by Steve Fairbrother and VIRPCA and the Porsche Oil Filter red can of 911 paperclips, plus a cream Porsche Classic Lanyard, donated by Steve Fairbrother and Wendy Woodley. With the auction of these items, plus the money from the C.V. Cars & Coffee we are donating $760 to the Comox Valley S.P.C.A. plus the 6 bags of towels. Well done members of VIR! (and to Wendy – Editor). We plan to present our cheque to the Comox Valley S.P.C.A. sometime in early December, we might combine with the C.V. Cars & Coffee on Saturday December 10th, stay tuned.
