I

From The VIRPCA Executive s summer here yet? December has been somewhat chaotic here - Christmas with the four kids, covering the house with Christmas lights and trying to get new tires on the Boxster between snow falls.

Brandi has been growing like a weed, she just turned one year old on December 30th, her vocabulary is slowly growing, but Porsche is still on the list to be learned.

Dave Nickel has been hard at work filling in the event calendar on our website so please check it out. The club’s first monthly meeting of the year is coming up on January 8th. Please join us for lunch (12:00) at the Arbutus Ridge Golf Course.

Martin Mansfield, President

I

t’s not that often that a Porsche makes it to a top ten list on Consumer Reports, but this month the new 718 Boxster gets a good review by one of the staff there and it’s worth a read if you haven’t had a chance to try out the new turbo edition of the second most popular model in our region of the PCA. You can read it at www.consumerreports.org/sports -cars/2017-porsche-718-boxster-first-drive-review Many thanks to those who have encouraged me in my first year with the newsletter. I ask all members to send in Porsche related articles for the enjoyment of the other members.

Steve Fairbrother, Newsletter Director

A

t the beginning of December we had 269 primary and 165 affiliates for a membership total of 434. While many new members contributed to healthy 17% growth in 2016, VIRPCA represents less than1% of the PCA’s total membership (118,895). That’s a lot of Porsches.

PCA recognizes members’ anniversaries in 5 year increments and the Porscher newsletter will pass this information on to you. While 2016 marks the largest intake of new members, there are some people who have been PCA members before the Vancouver Island Region was chartered in 1996.

Congratulations to:

40 Years of PCA membership: David Moyes & John Moyes. David and John are the longest serving members of the club. To honour 40 years, PCA provides a special gold-ringed decal with the number of years, an anniversary certificate and a club name badge. 5 Years of PCA membership: John Jeffrey and Karen Jeffrey. To honour five years, PCA provides a special decal signifying 5 years

VIRPCA’s Newest Member: Please welcome Julie Bailey from North Saanich and her 2007 911 Carrera S.

As it’s Christmas, I have 2 posters to award! This month’s winners are :Alan Newbert. His sent in a excellent black & white picture of his Boxster S using depth of field technique to get the background in soft focus. Martin Mansfield. His picture of the Porsche crest on his car just after the first snowfall is very appealing. You can see it on page 18. PORSCHER — DECEMBER 2016

Windscreen Cleaning Here is a brief email thread between Wyman Lee, Al Sherwood and Martin Mansfield regarding cleaning windscreens. Wyman: Check out this video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/axI5Luw0Eos Al: Interesting techniques and similar to those used when preparing the glass to install protective film to the glass. I Begin by thoroughly washing that glass and pay attention the trim and borders of the glass that can gold dirt and other contaminants. For the first step I use Scotch-Brite Light Duty Scrubbing Pad 9030 or Scotch-Brite Light Duty Scrub Sponge 63 these are easy to tell as they are white in colour and as longs as you do not trap any abrasive contaminant between it and the glass it will not scratch the glass. To use these I recommend a few drops of baby shampoo in a spray bottle of water, use this as a slip solution and clean the glass with the white Scotch-Brite pad, work over the entire glass surface and then with a clean MF towel wipe down the glass. Next using a stainless steel razor blade scraper and the same baby shampoo slip solution liberally covering the glass (more is better), hold the blade at a 45 degree angle and clean the glass with strokes from top to bottom over lapping each stroke just slightly to ensure you cover the entire surface. Once you have done the entire surface once again spray on the slip solution and use a clean squeegee to remove the solution. If you wish treat you glass with Rain-X or possibly another hydrophobic solution to finish up. Be sure to thoroughly clean you wiper blades as well, you wouldn't want to use old or dirty blades on that freshly cleaned glass! Clay bars have been recommended for cleaning glass, I know Griot's has clay made specifically for this surface, next time I am in the vicinity I intend to stop in an pick some up to try, I have not tried regular paint clay on the glass. Martin: I believe the clay is the same, just make sure to use a new bar on the windshield, razor first then clay bar to finish (it works well getting everything out of the small pores in the glass) you can even polish the glass too if you want to go all out. Al: You could certainly use paint clay on glass but the reason for using glass clay is that it is more dense which works better on a hard surface like glass, paint clay is soft and gentle meant for painted surfaces. Because of these different formulations you may not be able to completely clean the glass with a paint clay and it would not be a good idea to use glass clay or the even more abrasive wheel clay on bodywork paint or clearcoat. Martin: Good to know, I buy the cheap blue clay off eBay (looks / feels the same as the ones sold in the kits at Canadian tire) Al: Oh and another thing I will mention, of all of the vehicles I have owned or worked on in comparison to my experience with 2003-2016 Boxster windshields have shown me that this glass is softer than most. My reason for mentioning this is the caution you to start off with the least abrasive cleaning method to start with then evaluate your results only moving toward more abrasive materials if required. The steel wool method might be suitable for some windshields but personally I would not use it on a Porsche windshield, especially later models. Due to my findings this is the main reason I now use windshield protection film on them. Martin: I do the razor blade method maybe once or twice a year. How has the windshield protection film stood up? Your experience on the protective films would be great for the newsletter... hint hint lol PORSCHER — DECEMBER 2016
