From The VIRPCA Executive

t looks like the worst of winter is behind us... (knock on wood). I had a very eventful drive home from the last meeting. I managed to make it a few kilometers down the road before deciding I was better off getting a tow home. The snow cleared up outside of Ladysmith and decided to get dropped at downtown Nanaimo and drive the rest of the way home. Brandi has been enjoying her new Porsche she got for Christmas. She has been riding it all over the house shouting Weeeee! and Fast! I am starting to get jealous as I wait for the snow to finally melt! Don't forget to bring your special some one to our Valentine's Day Lunch on February 12th. Registration is open now on our website.

Martin Mansfield, President

W

ell the recent snowfall has certainly tested my patience. Having moved from Central Saanich to Lake Cowichan in 2015, we notice the slightly colder weather in the Cowichan Valley here and therefore we received a bit more snow than probably our fellow members in Victoria.

However, the good news is that it was a great time to test out my Pirelli Scorpion winter tires, the All Wheel Drive of my Macan and the knowledge that I obtained from last year’s Camp 4 winter driving course in Montreal. I am happy to report that the Macan behaved perfectly and I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending it to use in all weather conditions. Of course, not having studded Nokian tires (and a closed course) does mean that you have to hold something back, as icy road conditions will still get you in the end. For those who want to experience extreme winter driving conditions in a Porsche, take the Camp 4/4S/4RS courses — details can be found at http://porschedrivingexperiencecanada.ca/en/about/

n addition to being a regional club within the Porsche Club of America (PCA), we are incorporated as a not-for profit society in BC. A new Societies Act recently came into effect requiring us, and all societies, to transition to this new act within two years.

In preparation for transition, the VIR Board tasked Past President Brad Blaney and myself with reviewing club constitution and bylaws to ensure they are consistent with new legislation, with PCA policies and with the will of the members. Our review will be submitted to the Board in March and a draft document will be presented for approval at a members’ meeting later this year.

Membership News ast month I noted that our club makes up less than 1% of all PCA members. However, in terms of new members joining in 2016 we achieved the fourth highest level of recruitment, adjusted for population size. Not bad for a little island in the Pacific, eh?

Our Members’ anniversaries: This month we congratulate the following on their 1st anniversary of PCA membership: Duane Chapman, Steve Peers, Julian Butcher, Richard Gordon, Martin Jeffrey, Susan Jeffrey and Mark Unsworth. Our New Members: The month of December brought seven new members to the club bringing our total to 440. Please welcome our new members: Clay Chamberlin, Fanny Bay Martin Lane, Victoria Andrew Lee, Victoria Bruce Morgan, Victoria Ike Seaman, Tofino Cody Shoemaker, Nanaimo Doug Young, Sidney

T

he Club Executive felt that it should recognize and honor those members whose efforts and participation helped it get this far. So Peter Hamer was given a Citation Award by the VIR in recognition of the many hours he spent as a Charter member organizing VIR and serving as Secretary and subsequently as Newsletter Editor.

Peter recently replied

“Thanks for the recognition, the citation is a very nice gesture from VIR. As you probably know, I have not been an “active” member for some time, and you could also say that I am "between Porsches”, my last fullrace 951 having been sold in 2006. Lifestyle changes have put Porsches on hold since then. I will probably never stop looking for “the next Porsche”, but maybe down the road I’ll find my Number 13 Porsche. Yes, I have owned an even dozen in the past. Maybe it would be pushing my luck to go for #13! Anyway, VIR seems to be in very good hands these days, and has obviously evolved way beyond the vision that the core group had in mind back in 1996 when the concept of our own club was first hatched one night over drinks at the Princess Mary restaurant”. You deserved it, Peter!

Enjoying the Porsche Life...

A

little over 10 years ago I purchased my first Porsche, although I have always been a ‘car guy’ this was finally my chance to own a convertible. To be honest I never set out to buy a Porsche, you know too expensive and impractical (or so I thought), but after checking what was available from the domestic manufacturers as well as those from Asia I came back to the convertible I first saw in the late 1990’s sitting outside the Thatch on Hornby Island of all places. As it turned out, for Crater Lake, Oregon me none of its competitors had the look, performance and charisma of the Boxster, then I discovered the practical side, this thing has 2 trunks and we could actually go on a real road trip with it, Whoo-hoo! This all started in the summer of 2006 with a Speed Yellow 2003 Boxster, now you have understand that I am not one who changes cars at a whim, but during a routine service to the local Porsche dealer of the day, Speedway Motors I spied a new 2006 Boxster in the showroom, and wouldn’t you know it, Speed Yellow as well. They worked on me for a while, but I was strong, my 2003 was still under warranty, it was giving me tons of enjoyment and I still needed to move along my RX-7. Each time I dropped in for a visit the salesman would drop a few hints and suggest we talk, still I remained strong until… What did I see but a ‘SALE’ tag hanging from the mirror, never seen that before, the factory and the dealer were offering a huge discount on the convertible, possibly because it was already late October, and who buys a convertible in Canada in October? Who else but a bargain hunter in Victoria, the convertible capital of Canada! It took some strong negotiations but I managed to hammer out a deal I could go with, they took not only my 2003 Boxster in trade but the RX-7 as well, me driving away in a brand new 2006 Boxster with 4 years of warranty, needless to say I was quite proud of myself. Soon thereafter, I found out there was a local Porsche car club, never been in a car club before, the prospect of hanging out with other Porsche owners and finding out more about this marque sounded like it was worth the investment in time and effort. As it would turn out, we missed the opportunity to attend the 2006 Porsche Parade in Portland literally by days, but after joining the PCA we found out about the next Parade in 2007, it was being held in one of my favourite places, San Diego California, so the plan for a road trip was born! That was the trip that started it all, as it Crater Lake, Oregon turned out Jacquie and I were the only VIRPCA members to make the trip south, perhaps it was too soon after Portland for some, but for us timing was perfect. I have been to San Diego many times for work, essentially I knew my way around without a map but this time it would be different, no short escapes (in a rental car) from work in the warm summer evenings but rather a full on driving vacation with other Porsches! We didn’t know anyone when we arrived but soon met many great people, so friendly and happy that we made the effort to drive down to join in a naPORSCHER — FEBRUARY 2017

tional event. Like all Parades there is always lots to do, driving tours, autocross and of course dinners, the final Victory Banquet held on the flight deck of the USS Midway as the sun set over the Pacific Ocean, simply amazing!

Vantage, Columbia River

So fast forwarding a few years after a even more road trips, a stint for me a Newsletter Director and a couple of more Porsche Boxsters and many local drives and new friends met… how do we finish off our first 10 years as PCA members? Why a road trip of course, we would attend the first Treffen in North America, replacing the Escapes of the previous years, this one being held in Lake Tahoe. In early September of 2016 we made our way across on the Coho Ferry into Washington State with our traveling pals Shawn and Mark Titterton, we met them at Parade in Monterey and have been great friends ever since with our last trip together being Escape to Rushmore. As always we try and plan the routes out in advance if only to avoid any long periods of time on the interstate but also to see where the other half lives, this one was no different with stops at Portland, Klamath Falls and then into Lake Tahoe. For those that have not been to this part of California you are missing some of the very best scenery and driving roads in California and Nevada. Like the European Treffen, the North America version focuses on driving and this was the highlight of our time there. We did numerous day trips to famous frontier cities like Genoa, Carson City and Virginia City, and there was destinations like the Reno Balloon Races and National Auto Museum, events hosted by local artists and tours of lakeside mansions to mention a few. Of course, you can’t forget the dinners and final banquet held mid-way up the ski mountain in Squaw Creek that hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics.

Nevada City PORSCHER — FEBRUARY 2017

As with all of these events you usually see friends that you have made at previous Porsche gatherings and you will be sure to make new ones as well. We enjoyed awesome drives and toured around countryside lead by local PCA members proud to share their backyard with us, taking us to areas that most passing through this region do not get to see. Each day was special and we would have to say that the venue and facilities were the best we had ever experienced at any PCA event, so if this is the new standard then next Treffen should be awesome! I hope you enjoyed some of the pictures we took along the way to catch a glimpse of what Lake Tahoe has to offer as well as the journey to and from this area. I also want to suggest that you considered the roads less traveled on your way south to California, many talk fondly of the Coast Highway and what is not to like with coastal vistas and towering forests, but you should really venture east of the Cascades through Oregon and Washington, you will be rewarded with scenery and amazing roads that will have you saying “I didn’t know Oregon/Washington looked like this…” There are many interesting cites on the east side with great brewpubs in places like Susanville California and Bend Oregon that are second to none for their selection of craft beers and gastronomic delights, and if you are into the origins of the planet, fossils and crazy interesting rock formations (all with twisty roads joining them), the Painted Hills and the John Day Fossil Beds are sure to interest you. Continuing north over the Columbia River into Washington the scenery changes but remain incredible with the high plains around Yakima and Ellensburg with views of various Cascade Range Mountains, then north along the Columbia River up to Wenatchee and then west into Leavenworth along the ever popular Cascades Highway and through to Stevens Pass. We spent our final night of this trip just south of the border in Bellingham not only to seek out those last few bargains but to make the journey last a few more hours. It was great to get home to familiar surroundings and back to our families but you can be sure that we are already thinking about the next adventure and meeting up once again with our extended “Porsche Family” and sharing new experiences! For those interested, Treffen Hill Country is in April, down in Austin Texas and although a bit of a drive from here I am sure it will be incredible. For us though the next road trip will be to 2017 Porsche Parade in nearby Spokane, Washington, it will be an easy drive or can be extended if you want to explore what Eastern Washington has to offer, I think you know what our plan will be! We are looking forward to our next 10 years as PCA members and meeting up with all of our Porsche friends that we have made in the past and those new ones we are about to meet!

Improving the 996 / 997 Turbo Wing Lift Mechanism by David Cooper, Rally Sport Region Editor—VIR publish this article as an ’advertorial’ as we thought it would be interesting technically and potentially useful for 996/997 owners. Author David Cooper now sells his lift mechanism and has offered VIR members a 5% discount with coupon code PCA5off at his website www.rennkit.com

A

few years ago, my Porsche® 996 Turbo’s hydraulic wing lift system failed… twice. The first failure was before I bought the car. I purchased my 2002 Turbo knowing that the wing did not go up and down as it should. Being an engineer, I thought it must certainly be a rather simple repair. Researching a few popular online 996 Turbo forums, there was quite a bit of advice on how to fix the problems with the hydraulic wing system. Step 1 was removing the 3-piece hydraulic mechanism from my Turbo’s back lid and disassembled it on my work bench. Removal of the 3-piece hydraulic system and subsequent troubleshooting took quite a bit of effort and was a very messy job with power steering fluid leaks and drips. But I was driven to find the root cause of failure and finally discovered plastic components that had partially melted inside the 12V motor along with the PS fluid leaks. It was clear that the system was never intended to be refilled, much less regularly maintained. Once the motor was repaired and the hydraulics refilled, bled, tightened up and bench tested, the mechanism was installed back into my Turbo. Problem solved…I was proud of my repairs. Just a few months after the rebuild, one of the hydraulic rams catastrophically failed, leaking PS fluid down the back bumper and into the engine bay. The wing was stuck up on one side and wouldn’t move. Further research verified that the hydraulic ram cylinders cannot be rebuilt without cutting them apart to replace leaking internal seals – then resoldering the assembly back together. From stories on the forums, it became apparent that there are a quite a few failure modes: Drive motor overheating (my root cause problem) Leaking ram o-ring(s) (my other root cause problem) Leaking banjo fitting(s) Leaking syringe pump seal(s) Broken plastic plunger block Malfunctioning micro-switch(es) Broken ram spring(s) Deteriorated shaft wiper seal(s) Contaminated fluid, etc. Why would such a failure prone mechanism ever be installed on the 996 Turbo? Further research revealed that Porsche® designed and patented a “Motor vehicle with a rear end spoiler device”, or the bi-wing design, that for the first time provided negative lift (or downforce) on the Turbo. Porsche needed a dual cylinder lifting mechanism for such a wing and went outside to find the mechanism. A hydraulic mechanism was designed, patented and supplied by a German supplier to Porsche in time for the 5th generation water cooled turbo production start in 2000. This same hydraulic mechanism was used for the Carrera GT wing and again for the 6th generation 997 Turbo wing. It was clear to me that there had to be a better device for raising and lowering the wing.

My engineering instincts kicked in, causing me to wonder how to improve the overly complex, and failure prone hydraulic wing lift mechanism. My goal was to design and build a simple all-electronic wing lift mechanism for my car that is robust, yet easy to install and work on without special tools. I searched for a 12 volt electric ram and found devices that are used to position photovoltaic panels in the desert. Perfect for placement under the Turbo’s lid! I then designed CAD prototype parts and had them machined for trial fitting. A local water-jetter and machinist were secured to produce the various prototype parts out of billet aluminum: The next challenge was figuring out the electronics, which was the most time consuming piece of the puzzle. In the stock Turbo, should the wing not move, or extend up all the way, or take too long to deploy, the dreadPORSCHER — FEBRUARY 2017

ed Spoiler Warning is displayed on the instrument cluster. It was necessary to understand the switch logic and reverse engineer what the original programmers had coded into the cluster ECU in order to circumvent the warning. After completing the ladder logic, I made a prototype electrical gizmo with relays and programmable timers mounted to a plywood board for in-car testing. It functioned perfectly to circumvent the warning. The final challenge was figuring out how to fit all of the electronic components into a small waterproof box – with that piece done, it was mission accomplished: Lighter, More Robust, 3 Heights, Virtually Plug & Play and NO MORE HYDRAULICS! After all this work, I wondered if an electric wing lift mechanism might be desired by other 996 Turbo owners? As it turns out, the 4th most popular post on a well-attended 996 Turbo forum, at 55,911 views, is “996 TT rear spoiler problems – Help!” The original idea was to improve upon the factory hydraulic system in my car, but maybe others would benefit from a solution to replace their dysfunctional spoiler mechanisms. To find out, I created a post on the same 996 Turbo forum titled “Beta Testers Needed for Electric Spoiler Rams”. In short order, 24 fellow 996 turbo enthusiasts stepped up to test out my new wing lift kit and provide feedback. Currently, my “Beta Testers” post is in the top 15 with 27,958 views. I had my answer. Early in 2015, I created a company called Rennkit to provide a replacement electric actuation system for the wing hydraulics on 996 Turbos. Any new company must hand out titles. I chose President, and my wife was awarded the title of Chief Bubble Wrap Officer (CBWO). The first “eRam” kit was installed on my 996 Turbo in March, 2015, followed closely by the two dozen beta testers. The Rennkit website was launched to explain the infamous factory hydraulic system and failure modes and to provide details about the distinctive eRam wing actuation system. The electric wing lift mechanism was unique enough to file for a provisional patent. The final check was high speed track testing; which took place at our club’s annual Grattan Raceway DE event and again at another club’s Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course weekend DE event. The highest extension version is the 4” eRam, which added more rear downforce to im-

proved lap times. With Rennkit up and running, the next development was for the 997 turbo eRam kit, which was accomplished 6 months later. The first 977 turbo eRam beta tester claimed 200 MPH runs with his 3” eRam kit installed.

At the moment, I don’t have any plans to develop a kit for the Carrera GT, unless that one-off request comes in. So, what quirky part on your Porsche® should be reimagineered? David J. Cooper Rally Sport Region
