Dean and myself will be organizing VIRPCA’s entry. We will have a tent set up with food for club members and we will be drawing names for some Porsche swag. This year you have to register with GAIN before July 31. Information and registration page is in the link above. Please put Vancouver Island Region - Porsche Club of America in the car-club field to be counted.

t has been a busy time for me recently, I have been involved for many months on the Black Rock Committee helping to find sponsors and donations—both from the existing Porscher newsletter advertisers and finding new ones from within the car industry. So if you were at Black Rock, you should have see some familiar sponsor names and a few new ones which we hope will be helping us for many years to come. The full list of Black Rock sponsors are listed in this newsletter, they support us, so please support them in return. I posted many of the photos shown in this issue to our VIRPCA Facebook page quite quickly over Black Rock weekend, so I hope it gave those who were not attending, an insight into how each day’s events were progressing. At the High Performance Driver Education event at the Tofino Long Beach airport, I was driving hard again, so much so, that I found the Michelin Sport 3’s needed replacing, I have now installed Hankooks and so far, they are much quieter and more comfortable. Photos this month are by many people:- Jon Jensen, Tony Booth, Henning Wulff, Leah & Scott Mihalchan, Irwin Axness, Dan Bourlet and myself. If we have omitted anyone, sorry, please email and we shall credit you next month.

would like to say “Thank You” to everyone that attended Black Rock 2017. With your attendance and generous contributions we have had another very successful and fun event. The charity money raised for “Tour de Rock” was $13,900 and for Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade was $5,922. Truly amazing, Thank You. I would like to thank ALL our sponsors for their financial and great prize contributions to help make our event special. Congratulations to some of the big winners, Janine Martin winner of VI Motorsport Circuit & stay at Villa Eyrie, Kevin Johnston winner of Black Rock 2018, Brad Pape winner of Black Rock Oceanfront Resort 2 night stay & Culinary Package, Scott & Leah Mihalchan winner of “Dinner by Dean”, Francis LaCouvee another winner of “Dinner by Dean” and many other great prize winners. Weather was a bonus — sunny, blue skies for Autocross, HPDE, Overland Tour, Whale Watching, Wild Pacific Trail Discovery Walk, Show & Shine, Poker Rally, Porsche Parade, beach BBQ & fireworks, Saturday Pancake Breakfast and even the Whisky tasting! Special thanks to all the HPDE Instructors, Tony Booth (HPDE Classroom Instructor) and Conrad, Chuck, & Rick for the Autocross Track. It was great to see returning members, friends and new members all having fun and talking about our common interest. In this issue, there are some great pictures by Steve and others of this beautiful area, fantastic cars and people having a good time. Again, thank you for all of your support and the committee hope to see you next year!

fter driving through beautiful Vancouver Island scenery and some nice twisty roads on the way to Ucluelet, attendees arrived at the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort, For those that have not stayed there before, it is situated right on the ocean edge next to Big Beach and has a choice of rooms within the hotel or separate Pacific Trail suites. There is plenty of parking on site for all our Porsches and there is an area for car washing too.

n arrival at our venue Thursday, attendees registered inside the hotel banquet room this year, which was manned by some of the BR Committee members — Dan, Tracy, Dean, Brad, Steve, Jon and assisted by Kim. Norm Smith was around collecting funds for our charities and was soon joined by our RCMP rider this year from the Nanaimo detachment — Corporal Kevin Flood and his wife Michelle.

At registration, attendees signed the required PCA waivers and then picked Dean Aikenhead and Dan Bourlet welcome an attendee

After registration closed, there was a Whisky Tasting in the resort’s wine cellar, by donation and organized by the hotel with Shelter Point Distillery from Campbell River. In the evening there was a Welcome Social event held in the hotel lobby, where attendees used their drinks vouchers from the goodie bags to sample Tony Booth (our HPDE Class Advisor) & Norm Smith Mission Hill wines and Stanley Park beers. Of course, there were also appetizers brought out later from the hotel kitchen which were keenly appreciated by everyone. Jon Jensen assisting with T-Shirts orders

here were 21 people signed up for the Porsche Centre Victoria Overland Event, where three Cayennes and 2 Macans (one was mine) took off from the Resort lobby loaded with people and our packed lunches, then headed out of town on Hwy 4, then turned left pretty quickly onto a Fire Service Road. As you can see from the pictures, Friday was a bright sunny day and naturally on the FSR it was really dusty. There were times when we had to slow right down to let the dust settle before we could catch up to the car ahead. As it was a Friday, the road was also used by a couple of logging trucks, so we had to stop to let them squeeze passed us on the narrow roads. Eventually, and after a quick photo opportunity on a bridge and a change to Plan B by PCV General Manager Paul Rossmo (due to an overhead helicopter logging risk) we arrived at a beautiful ocean cove with snow capped mountains in the distance! After a nice lunch and some great car stories as usual from Paul and fellow travellers, we set off back along the dusty trail—some returning to the hotel, others headed to see how the Autocross was going at the airport. Thanks to Paul, Gary and Ricky of Porsche Centre Victoria for another overland trek this year!

he Big Beach BBQ was very popular this year—as shown by the large line-up for food cooked by Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade. A new, special dish this year was our own Dean Aikenhead’s Cioppino, which from all reports (including my own) was very tasty indeed. The firemen (and Kate the fire-woman) handled cooking & replenishing all the other food available — freshly caught that day salmon, white fish, chicken and of course it was followed by desserts and soft drinks. The meal was by donation to UVFB and the gorgeous weather ensured everyone was happy while eating!

s usual, Saturday started with a Pancake breakfast (by donation) cooked by the Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade in the Resort car park. There was some friendly rivalry between the two cooks as to who made the better pancakes—plain or with blueberries. I am sure both tasted fine (mine did!) especially as all funds raised went to a great cause.

aturday’s High Performance Driver Education (HPDE) event looked a bit doubtful as the local foghorn was heard during most of the early morning. However the track gods shined on us (and the track!) and the according to members, the fog seemed to be everywhere else except the Tofino airport runway and taxiway that we used!
Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade and the HPDE Instructors
Again, the volunteers and instructors did a great job setting up the cones. After a brief drivers’ meeting, the day’s driving started and everyone had a great time:young & old, novice & experienced and male and female drivers. Lunch was provided by the UVFB and made a nice break for everyone, including a photo op for the Brigade and Instructors to have their picture taken with a couple of Porsches and their fire truck. fun event and a great way to explore Ucluelet town, was to have participated in the Ucluelet Walking Poker Rally. Attendees toured the community and visited many local businesses identified on the provided map of the town. Each business gave the visitors a sealed envelope containing a playing card and those were handed in (unopened!) to the event organiser Sylvia Mansfield, who determined which participant had the best poker hand from their cards. This year the winner was Peter Lindsay (below) who was holding 5 Kings!! Runner up was Gordon Lewandowski who collected 5 Jacks and third place went to Duane Lawrenuk with 4 Aces.

he main VIR event for Cops for Cancer fund-raising is of course the Saturday night banquet & auction and this year was no exception. The evening’s events started with an open cash bar in the resort lobby area with attendees in their smart (but comfortable) attire— especially our RCMP rider Cpl. Kevin Flood who was resplendent in his red uniform. During this time attendees could bid on the silent auction items which was moved into the banquet area during the meal. Also on display was Irwin Axness’ 1973 914-S 2 litre which was receiving many compliments and also made it into the Tofino-Ucluelet Westerly News.

veryone proceeded in to the banquet room and the Master of Ceremonies was Norm Smith, who this year became a legitimate member of VIR PCA as he now owns a Guards Red Boxster—congratulations Norm and Kim! Norm was assisted this year by Vanna White Dean Aikenhead, the mid-island Director. After the usual bidding war for who could eat first, everyone enjoyed their meal, even though there were some issues around course timings, which the Black Rock Committee will iron out with the resort for next time. As expected, there were some great prizes up for auction, e.g. a luxury night at Villa Eyrie followed by a day at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit with instruction by Kees Nierop. Also Dean (and wife Ann) was auctioning dinner at his house for 8 people (which would be awesome as I have sampled his cooking) along with visits to 14 wineries. That bidding war eventually went to 2 couples as Dean was generous enough offering to cook another dinner for 8 people! Many thanks to Dean and Ann as that raised a large amount. (See Dan’s text on page 8 for bid winner information). There was much amusement when Gordon Lewandowski (President of a neighboring US region) ‘accused’ Norm Smith of not having his Boxster’s wheel crests aligned, and Cpl. Kevin Flood (see right) eventually served a traffic ticket to Norm. Conrad Peden praised Curtis Wrobel who we had lost recently, he helped the club at most autocross events and Black Rock. he RCMP/UVFB Porsche Parade started from the Resort car park with the ATV vehicle that UVFB purchased with funds that VIR PCA raised in previous years. The fire truck sounded it’s horn quite often, which probably woke up some late sleepers in the resort, but all in a good cause. The fire truck was followed by Kevin and 2 other RCMP riders and then many Porsches streamed out of the car park and made their way through the town and returned about 20 minutes later for the buffet breakfast.

hen it comes to washing a car, convertible tops need to be handled separately from the rest of the car. The first step in caring for your convertible top is to know whether you have a vinyl or fabric top. If you don't already know, put a few drops of water on the convertible top and rub the water into the top with your finger. Fabric tops will start to absorb the water. The water will just sit in a pool on a vinyl top. Next, you'll want to go buy a kit specifically designed for your type of top. 303 Products, Griot's, and RaggTopp all sell convertible top products that I'm comfortable recommending. The RaggTopp line has different products for vinyl and fabric tops and is my product of choice.
By Bill Elwell Let me give you a little background first. The vast majority of convertible tops I see are fabric. Fabric tops typically consist of a canvas top layer (the part that we see) which isn’t waterproof and a waterproof rubber membrane underneath. Caring for these tops involves keeping them clean, free of lint, and protected from stains. Vinyl tops, on the other hand, are typically single layer affairs and are much easier to care for. Some folks recommend starting the process of cleaning a convertible top by vacuuming the top. Next, you'll need a medium to soft bristle brush to clean the top. Horsehair upholstery brushes work well on convertible tops. Apply the convertible cleaning product and work it in with the brush. Rinse with water. Now let the top dry. It has to be completely dry before applying any protectant. I won't touch a fabric top with any sort of towel, it will grab bits of lint off the towel like a magnet. But some folks say that you can use a chamois or drying towel to blot the water from the top. I emphasize the word “blot”. Don't dare rub a piece of fabric on a fabric top. Letting the car sit overnight in a garage is typically enough to get it dry. Once the top is completely dry, make sure there are no bits of lint or debris still on the top; grab a lint roller to remove them if necessary. Now the protectant can go on. The protectant will come in some form of spray, either pump or aerosol. Follow the product directions regarding the number of coats to apply. A little overspray on the windows or paint is not a problem. Overspray removal is easy with the products I've used. The protectant should be applied every year or two. Between applications, you can clean the top with the soapy water from your car wash bucket using the brush described above. Thanks for reading. If you have questions, drop me a line at:billelwell@hotmail.com
