ongratulations to Conrad Peden (right) who took 1st place in his class at Autocross at PCA Parade this year and (last year’s PCA Raffle winners) Rick and Gayle Collopy who also took 1st place, but in the team Golf event (along with team members Brad Pape & Ray Gumble). Rick and Gayle also took 2nd place in the Gimmick Two Person rally and Al Kyle was 4th in his class in the Concours d’Elegance with his 944 Turbo. Some fellow Vancouver Island club members are also mentioned in other events’ results and you can read them at the PCA web page here https://www.pca.org/news/2017-07-21/event-winnersporsche-parade-2017 although the Autocross PDF link there appears to be bad at time of publishing and should point to here inConrad Peden stead :http://parade2017.pca.org/docs/Results/AutocrossResultsParade2017Revised.pdf So, well done to everyone who competed in an event at Parade this year and to all the others for being there and supporting your region’s club members. I am sure you all had a great week down in Spokane!

he Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit was chosen by Porsche AG to host an international launch of two new models of the Panamera— the Turbo S E-hybrid and the Sport Turismo.
There were 440 journalists from around the world (attending in waves) from July 19th at both VIMC and the Villa Eyrie up until the close of the event on July 30th — the hotel was used by the journalists to stay during their visit. Porsche supplied 21 of the new models along with some 911s and a 918 Spyder too. There was a lot of media attention from both international and local TV stations and newspapers too with Island coverage on CTV at the start of the event and an article in the Times Colonist.
Sport Turismo The Sport Turismo was described by Ben Weinberger, a Porsche spokesman as “a kind of station wagon, but we don’t call it that because it’s not, and the Turbo S E-hybrid as a winning combination of two engines with a combined 680 horsepower. It has a V8 combustion engine and an electric motor that can drive up to 50 kilometres pure electric. But with the combustion engine, you don’t need to be afraid of the range and you’ve got a lot of power”.

he Comox Valley monthly Cars & Coffee will be hosting, for the second year, PORSCHES HELPING PETS on Saturday, August 12th 10am, Crown Isle Plaza, in the “Clinic” parking lot, across from Starbucks. This is a fund raiser for the Comox Valley S.P.C.A, and we will also be collecting donations of clean, gently used towels, blankets, sheets & pillow cases, which they always need for the animals, while they are waiting for their “fur-ever home”. Perhaps members can encourage family, friends and fellow animal lovers for a donation. I will also have cash donation boxes as every “penny” helps!! Last year VIR collected 10 big bags of towels, let’s see if we can top that this year! Cash donations $760 last year, this year our goal is $911.
Following the Cars & Coffee, I am planning a drive, a 40 Knots wine tasting, lunch and auction at Crown Isle Resort, Atrium Room Dining. The auction items we have so far are:- $250 gift certificate for detailing at RIBA in Duncan, Crown Isle Resort round of golf for 2 including cart rental $230, 7 authentic, vintage ½ Lt. German beer steins (mint condition, some marked “West Germany”), 2017 Black Rock T-shirt and Golf shirt, Porsche Baseball cap, Rucksack, XL Umbrella, 2 Key Rings and 2 Targa bottle openers, $300 gift certificate for 2 nights/2 adults at Terrace Beach Resort in Ucluelet, 4 Mount Washington Alpine Resort Scenic Chairlifts passes, and a Compressed ‘Pu’er’ Tea from Yunnan Province, China, and I have more in the works! Last year a number of members donated items to the auction, all donations are welcome. As I have been able to get such a wide variety of items to auction, I am hoping to find some way to open up the auction to all 482 club members!! I have not been able to figure that out just yet, so if you see something you would like, send me an email upisland@virpca.org which item you would like and your bid amount.

Editor-This is the first of 3 reviews by club members on products WeatherTech sent to us. Simon Young tries out their Leather Conditioner :The official line WeatherTech TechCare Leather Conditioner with aloe vera removes dirt and other impurities from automotive leather and vinyl surfaces and also helps protect and maintain these surfaces. In practice
The product was very easy to use. Applied sparingly to a microfibre towel and massaged gently into all leather and vinyl trim surfaces. The product was absorbed rapidly, leaving no greasy or glossy residue. The treated leather surfaces had a satin finish, and appeared more supple to the touch. Unlike some other leather care cream products, the WeatherTech rejuvenator did not block the pores of perforated leather, or leave residue in stitching. The treated surfaces remained in good order for two weeks of daily use, after which I reapplied. This is not a product I would consider for reconditioning very tired leather and vinyl, rather something you would use regularly between full details, as you would, say, a spray wax on your paintwork on every wash, to maintain a high quality appearance.

ur club President Martin, forwarded this article from Charles Tolles about 986/996 key fobs, but he says that it should apply to all key fob boards.
Symptoms: a) Both transmitters’ LEDs would flash when buttons were pressed, but either no response from car or intermittent function, and/or b) Battery would quickly drain. Failure Flexing of the circuit board from years of button presses can cause broken solder joints on the rear of the board. Repair First test all buttons with a Digital Volt Meter set to continuity and confirm function. De-solder and remove battery holder from the rear of the board. Inspect all solder joints for breaks (will require 30x magnification inspection scope - as they cannot be seen with the naked eye). Reflow all solder joints with flux using a fine tip iron and scope. A very steady hand and some basic knowledge of electronics soldering is required. Too much heat or flux will destroy components and/ or circuit traces and stray solder will cause shorts. Reattach battery holder. Enjoy your working key transmitter. Alternatively, you can send them to me for repair at a cost of US $30 each, flat rate for US (add $10 for international shipping). charlestolles@gmail.com

new event, Quadra Island Jaunt + Wine Tasting, was held on May 6 & 7, 2017 and hosted by my husband Gary and myself. We were very pleased to be joined by Rick & Carolyn Lloyd (Victoria), Gerhard & Ronell Bosman (Nanaimo), James & Louse Barrand (Qualicum Beach), Edith Skiber & Boomer (Deep Bay), Peter & Lily Brennan, Paul Atterton & Bev White, and Henry & Liz Ellis (Comox Valley), Dave & Roslyn Nickel, Al & Laurel Klus, (Campbell River). Don & Diane Davis from Campbell River took the Sunday Wildlife & Adventure Tour through Aboriginal Journeys. A drivers’ meeting was held at Quadra Plaza, then we proceeded to April Point Resort, then Heriot Bay Inn for a delicious lunch. Lois, General Manager/Community Custodian and her team “went the extra mile” and reserved us parking spots! Very much appreciated. Next stop Tru-Value Foods, for some quick shopping, then a walk down to Taku Resort & Marina to enjoy their beautiful views of the snow-capped mountains.
Next, Rebecca Spit Provincial Park, where the pot holes EXCEEDED all our expectations. We enjoyed a short walk and headed back to our Porsches for much anticipated wine tast-
ing at Southend Farm Winery. We were well looked after by the tasting host, Jennifer. Some purchases were made before we drove to our destination for a overnight stay at Tsa Kwa Luten Resort. All enjoyed a delicious dinner, were pleased with their oceanfront view rooms, and we were treated to a Holland America Cruise ship passing in the moonlight. Draw prizes were awarded at dinner, Rick won a cap, Laurel a coffee mug donated by Tsa Kwa Luten, Louise a PORSCHER — AUGUST 2017

et's start out with a quick refresher. Here is the five step process that covers what we all should be thinking about when it comes to caring for and protecting the incredibly thin coat of paint on our cars. Yes, if you’re sharp, you’ll notice that I added a 5th step.
Clean – The first step is to thoroughly clean the exterior of your car including the wheels and wheel wells. In a previous issue I covered washing the wheels. In this issue we'll cover washing the car. Decontaminate – Decontamination removes bits of dirt that are embedded in the paint which can't be removed with washing. We'll cover this in a later issue. By Bill Elwell Polish – Polishing addresses scratches and stains in the clear coat. We'll cover this in a later issue. Protect – Now we need to apply something that will protect the paint. We'll cover this in a later issue. Maintain – Once we have our car cleaned and protected, it’s far easier to maintain that state of cleanliness than it is to let the condition degrade such that you have to go through this process again. In the last issue I covered the two bucket wash method, but it's important and I'm going to review it briefly. In the two bucket wash method, one bucket is for soapy wash water and the other is for dirty rinse water. Your washing tools start in the clean soapy water. You use a tool to clean something and then dunk it into the rinse bucket which has no soap. The dirt comes off in the rinse bucket and then you move the tool to the soapy water bucket and start the process again. This does a fantastic job at preventing dirt from making its way out of the bucket and back onto your car to scratching it. With that said, let me first cover the tools and chemicals we'll need :Wash buckets – we covered wash buckets in the last issue when we talked about washing wheels. The same bucket rig we used for wheels will be used here again. Wash mitt – I don't ever want to see one of you bucket washing your car with a towel, or rag. There is one well respected company out there that makes a wash sponge. I haven’t used it. Car wash mitts are the product of choice and are designed to pull dirt away from the paint and hold it there until they are rinsed. I prefer to use chenille wash mitts that look like one in the image. Woolie wash mitts (sometimes called sheepskin) should work well too but I don't believe they release dirt as easily when rinsed as the chenille mitts do. Car wash soap – Please, don't use Dawn or any other dish-washing soap on your car. Dish soaps contain large amounts of surfactants to deal with hard water related issues and will undo some of the properties of any wax on the car. Use a dedicated car wash soap. There are a ton of car wash soaps out there. Just keep it simple and you'll be fine. Griot's Car Wash is a great product and it’s what I use at home. At the shop, I use Meguiar's Hyper Wash but it only comes in a 1 gallon size and isn't typically stocked at local stores. If you shop at a local auto parts store, Meguiar's Gold will PORSCHER — AUGUST 2017
Page 27
very likely be on the shelf and it's a fine choice.
Drying towels – The wash process I teach you will use two types of towels. The first towel is a drying towel. Don't use a bath towel. Use a towel specifically designed for drying cars. Griot's PFM drying towel is generally considered one of the best drying towels out there. At home I have a number of Griot's drying towels including a PFM. At the shop I use Cobra Guzzlers but I'll probably switch over to Griot's PFMs when the Guzzlers wear out. Wiping towels – In my opinion, a drying towel should never touch anything that is dirty enough to stain it. So when it comes to drying door jambs, wheels, wheel well lips and so on, you need a lower quality microfiber towel. Griot's has either the multi-purpose utility towel or, if your budget can handle it, the Dirty Spot Microfiber Wipe Down Towel. The alternative that I like is the Kirkland microfiber towels you can find at Costco. These are going to get dirty, so you don't want to sink a ton of money into buying them.
Tar and sap remover – You'll have bits of tar that car soap and a wash mitt won't remove. The absolute must have product in your tool kit is 3M Specialty Adhesive Remover. Use this for tar, tree sap, or any other spot of gooey stuff that won't come off with the wash mitt. Beware. This stuff has a strong odor. Any rag that you use with it should be left outside until you're ready to wash it and then wash it alone. I've had a whole wash load of towels come out smelling like this stuff before I learned better. Bug remover – Bugs typically cover larger areas like the front of the car and the front facing surfaces of the rear view mirrors. For bugs, you'll want something you can spray onto a large area and let sit to soften the bug guts. At the shop, I use Poorboy's World Bug Squish. At home I use Griot's Bug & Smudge Remover. Squeegee or blower – A squeegee or blower is an optional drying aid. Squeegees are somewhat controversial. Some believe that a squeegee will grab onto and hold small particles of dirt that will scratch your paint. Others believe that if the car is washed correctly and the squeegee properly cared for, there is no risk. I've used squeegees for years recently converted over to using a blower. If you go the squeegee route, make sure you get one that's flexible so it will bend to match the curves of body panels. A blower makes more sense if you wash a lot of vehicles and/or your vehicle(s) have a lot of little nooks you can't reach with a towel. McKee's makes a blower designed for cars and motorcycles that I'd like to buy for myself.. Metro makes a line of vacuums and blowers that are a bit pricey, but well respected. I've heard of some folks using a leaf blower. It's got to be awkward, but unless it's one of those dual purpose blower vacuums, I don't see a problem. Don't be tempted to use a shop vac with the hose flipped around to the exhaust port. Unless you have a dedicated hose that is only used for blowing, you should never use a shop vac to dry your car. Shop vac hoses are corrugated and dirt gets trapped in the corrugations. When you start blowing, bits of dirt will come loose as the hose flexes and you'll blow them onto your paint. Let me get back to the best use for a blower. If you are patient, you can dry an entire car with a blow but unless you are working with a coated or freshly waxed car, it takes a lot of time. I use the blower for two jobs. First, I blow off the big puddles of water from a section of the car and then finish drying that section with a towel. Blowers are great for blasting water out from inside seams between body panels and around badges, door handles, and rearview mirrors. Finally, I LOVE using a blower to dry wheels and grills. I hate drying those with a towel. Let me cover four guidelines before we get started. From this point forward anything we do to the exterior of the car must be done without introducing any new scratches in the paint. Unless you've got years of experience, all of your detailing activities must be done in the shade. Specific to washPORSCHER — AUGUST 2017
Page 28
ing the car, you have to keep the car wet until you start to dry it. If a drop of water dries on the paint, it will leave a mineral stain. Removing it will likely require buffing. Finally, always start at the top of the car (the cleanest part) and work your way down to the bottom (the dirtiest part). OK, let’s get dirty, or maybe just a little wet. 1. Fill one of your wash buckets with water and the second bucket with car wash soap and water. Your wash mitt should be in the soapy bucket. 2. Take your hose and rinse the car from top to bottom. 3. If you've got squished bugs on your car, liberally spray the affected areas with your bug spray to soften the bugs while you wash the rest of the car. 4. Starting on the roof of your car, take the wash mitt and wash a section of the car. Maybe half the roof plus half of the front and rear windows would be a good first section. 5. Dunk the mitt in the rinse bucket, swirl it around a bit, pick it out, and give it a quick squeeze. Then dunk it in the soapy bucket. 6. Rinse the area you just washed. While you have the hose in your hands, give a quick squirt on any panel that looks like they are starting to dry out. 7. Pick a new area to wash, grab the wash mitt and return to step 3. Keep this up, saving the bottom 8” of the car for last. Use the 3M Adhesive Remover spray when you come across any stubborn gunk. 8. Once you start washing the bottom of the car, make sure you get your mitt down underneath the bottom of the car. Typically, the painted surface wraps down underneath the car. There's usually an inch or so of painted metal on the bottom of at least two sides of the car. And the plastic trim on the front and back almost always wraps well under the car. Make sure you reach under there and get all those surfaces. If you've never cleaned under there before, your wash mitt will come up really dirty the first few times. 9. Grab a wiping towel and wash the exhaust tips. 10. Now it's time to dry things off. If you've chosen to use a squeegee or a blower, use your tool of choice to remove the bulk of the standing water. They won't completely dry the car. They are just tools to get the bulk of the water off so you can quickly dry the car with a single drying towel. 11. If you have a blower, blow out the little gaps around the headlights, taillights, door handles, and so on. A blower is the only practical way to get at these little spots. 12. Grab a drying towel and get busy. Remember, start at the top of the car. Focus on the big painted, glass, and plastic surfaces. If you didn't use a squeegee or blower, it will take 3 or 4 drying towels to dry the car. 13. Grab a wiping towel and dry the wheels. It might take two towels. But if you have a blower, it's great on wheels. 14. Open the hood, trunk, and doors. 15. Grab a couple wiping towels and start working around the edges and openings of the hood, trunk, and doors. You'll need two or three wiping towels. Let me point out a couple areas that are frequently ignored. Make sure you get back in and around the door hinges. Also, the bottom edge of the doors are typically a mess. If your car has a gasket down there, make sure you get the towel into the folds of the gasket. Those gaskets can be a real mess. There you go, your car is washed and dried. I should make mention of foam cannons in this article. There are three kinds of foam cannons (hose end, compressed air, and power washer) but they all do the same thing to one degree or another. They are supposed to spray a thick foam of car soap and water. The foam will cling to the car for a while. The object is to spray down some or all of a car with soap foam and then grab your wet wash mitt and wipe it down in order to speed up the wash process. I’ve seen videos of guys that can hand wash a car in under 10 minutes with a foam cannon and two wash mitts. From what I’ve seen, the hose end canons are the lease effective and the pressure washer canons give the best results. (Continued on page 31)

I use a compressed air foam cannon. You load up the supply bottle with 2 ounces of foam soap and the rest with water. If I’m using the cannon, I put less soap in my soap bucket. On a coupe, I’ll spray the whole car and let the foam sit for a minute while I do something else and then start the wash process. I always save cleaning the glass for last. I’ll cover glass in its own separate article next time. Thanks for reading.
