his month I have been configuring the (new to VIRPCA) MotorsportReg.com registration system and along with Dan Bourlet, Brad Blaney and the other members of the Black Rock Committee, tested it and after some tweaking, it went ‘live’ on time and has been declared a great success due to the large reduction in work required by us processing the payments and invoices etc. There will be additional benefits from the many reports available to us which will allow the organisers more time to spend on attendees. If you have not yet registered, please do so as we have not had registrations for the Instructors nor Porsche Victoria yet (and we know they are coming!), so get in quick. We realise some people are spending their dollars this year maybe on PCA Treffen in Banff or similar trips, but you cannot beat the community & dollar value of Black Rock and the fun everyone has there. p Island's usual 2nd Saturday of the month, Feb. 10 Cars & Coffee was a special, early celebration of Valentine’s Day. We met at the Old House Hotel & Spa, for coffee and “in house” baked cookies, where we were joined by Vanessa Metcalf, Sales Manager who gave us a tour of one of their one bedroom condo suites, with full kitchen, fireplace, and balcony with a beautiful view of the Courtenay River. They are a Pet Friendly” hotel. We were only able to see one room, as they had a full house the night before. We visited their year round, heated outside pool, and hot tub, which also has a beautiful view of the river. We had a brief view of their OhSpa, as it was very busy with customers, both men and women, we were unable to see one of their many rooms. The Old House Hotel & Spa generously gave us a Gift Certificate for “1 night, for 2 in a 1 bedroom”, won by Steven & Karen Jeffery, Comox and a “$50. Gift Certificate OhSpa”to won by Duane and Laurie Lawrenuk, Qualicum Beach. We then proceeded outside, for the usual Porsche picture taking. Followed by a well received brunch/lunch at Locals Restaurant, next door. We had 14 members in attendance, Mike Bishton (Parksville), Edith Skiber (Deep Bay), Liz & Henry Ellis, Lorrie & Chuck Romain (Comox), and a brand new member from Comox, Richard DeLuca, who just purchased his 2012 911 Carrera Cabriolet, from Porsche Victoria. I had gathered together some more goodies for draw prizes. Mike and Richard won the hard cover book, “ORIGINALE 01\News and products from Porsche Classic”, Edith a bottle of red wine, and Lorrie & Henry each won a genuine German beer stein. All the ladies received a Purdys chocolate heart. A happy noise level with coffee and cookies, followed by lunch, a good time was had by all, under beautiful sunny skies, not snow, as predicted. Thank you to Vanessa for your two draw prizes and taking the pictures.

he VIRPCA Competition and HPDE informational meeting was held on February 4th in the Eagle Creek Village Quality Foods’ boardroom. 16 members (Lorne Andras, Julie Bailey, Brad Blaney, Tim Evans, Steve Fairbrother, Michael Holan, Klaus Kreye, Ross MacDonald, Phil MacIntyre, Barry McCallan, John McGurran, Didier Moinier, Jim Russell, Roy Thomas, Don Gosse, Garth Webber Atkins and 1 guest (Richard Walton) attended the meeting. Our club president, John McGurran, noted that VIRPCA autocross has declined due to lack of safe / affordable local venues and some disinterest among members who do not want to risk damage to their cars. Conrad Peden has retired from the Competition position and the club had been looking for someone to fill this position. Tyson Johnson has come forward and has become the Competition Chair. We currently have the Black Rock event in May and the autocross at Western Speedway in October. Lorne Andras noted that there are several venues on the mainland that members could use. Mission Raceway offers 2 driver training sessions and Area 27 is another good venue. Julie Bailey noted that Assembly Wharf in Nanaimo is used by the Corvette Club for autocross 4 times a year. Usually it is the same 30 people, including Porsche owners, that attend these events. The MG club is also open to other makes and offers autocross training the day before their events, which are held at Western Speedway. John will connect with the Corvette Club to ensure VIRPCA members are invited when space is available. However, the Assembly Wharf is not a permanent location. Roy Thomas suggested that area sports car clubs work together to find a semi-permanent home for autocross and suggested that VIMC may be a host. John will follow up on that. Tyson’s 3 part program is a way to rekindle interest and participation by offering very novice friendly events. Klaus Kreye has had a lot of rally experience and shared it with the group. (He will be competing in the Thunderbird Rally on the Family day weekend.) He described four kinds of rally: Closed Course, Classic, TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) and ‘Gimmick’. The last 2 would be great for beginners and even though they are conducted at, or below speed limits, the driver and navigator get really engaged in the driving experience. Klaus is willing to share his knowledge. Garth Webber Atkins noted that this could be a good social experience and may be a good way to involve the Cayenne and Macan owners. This may also be a way to engage families. The events could include meals, as another way to socialize. In most cases cars are not at risk of damage. Richard Walton says his firm is involved with renewing Vancouver Island Rally Association. Much interest was expressed in the possibility of rally events and John will follow up with Klaus to see if he would take a leadership role for the club as Chair (like Tyson). In summary, Tyson’s plan is ideal for the club at this time and some of the meeting participants will contact PORSCHER — MARCH 2018

him to express interest. MotorsportReg will be used for registration purposes as there will be some costs to drivers for the autocross stage.

ntries for this event (Classic Car Rally) opened sometime early January. I got my entry off express post on day 2, but that was too late!!! All 80 spots had been taken. So I was number 16 on the waiting list for the next 4 months. Nevertheless I continued prepping the car. Two weeks before the event the call came in: There was a cancellation – we were in.
route near Ashcroft for the run into Kamloops. The little 356 ran great and the new shocks really paid off. Comfortable cruising around 100 km/h and enough extra to overtake. The cars all parked together behind the hotel and I took some panning shots with the iPhone.
The range of cars was quite amazing. You can see my cream/ivory coloured 356 near the middle of the pic So last Thursday afternoon my navigator Peter and below (on next page—Editor) myself pointed the little 356 towards Nanaimo. In the morning the weather was funny - The after- Saturday morning meant more detours. HWY 8 was noon turned warm and sunny, the evening was mild - closed so we ran south to Merritt before detouring to Then things turned wild! Ashcroft and continuing from there. Passing though Cache Creek we were stopped at a traffic light when the premier of BC crossed in front of us on an inspection of the flooded areas. Later in the afternoon we would see LOTS more water everywhere. Somewhere near Clinton we were stumped by the route book and stopped for lunch. Others had the same issue and we soon found out where the reference was wrong. Then the photographer Andrew came in and announced more route changes…due to flooding of roads.
In Nanaimo we caught the ferry to Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver) and could see dark clouds and lightning off to the east. We got to Squamish in the dry and the first drops came down as I put the car into the garage. Overnight it came down hard, with avalanches, mudslides and flooding.
Just after our fuel stop in Clinton the car hiccupped but continued running (bad fuel?). The only issue was a high idle that plagued us the rest of the weekend. Our route took us north for a visit to “the Chasm” (a gorge created from melting glacial waters eroding a lava plateau over a 10 million year span called the Chilcotin Group. The walls of the Chasm contain tons of red, brown yellow, and purple and are an average of 300 metres in height. The Chasm is approximately 600 metres wide and 8 km long) and a loop around Green Lake before heading back south towards Kamloops. Here the organisers had set up a large sign next to the highway and pulled us all off… to give us more directions/detours to find a passable route to Vernon and our second overnight at Kelowna.
Friday morning dawned with the planned route north being closed. So we had to detour – the story of the weekend! A total of 95 cars had been accepted with the oldest being a 1937 Rolls and a 1938 MG… an open MG! Our route then took us back down to Van- That evening I did some work on the ignition, but the couver and out through HWY1 towards Hope and up effect/improvement was minimal, so we ran on the the Fraser Canyon. Pouring rain all the way to the rest of the weekend with the high idle. canyon. The sun came out again and we re-joined our PORSCHER — MARCH 2018

Other than “a little bit of water” the event was running fine and with a few minor adjustments all cars made it … well … with the exception of the organisers car! Dave has a very “trick” rally Beetle and he lost fuel pressure and had to leave the car behind. On the Sunday the De Tomaso would run a bearing… A great buffet spread was enjoyed by all in the evenings with lots of car banter. Saturday night’s prize giving was the usual affair with the sponsors filling the tables so that everyone got to take something home – I narrowly missed a Magnus Walker Porsche T shirt!!! Sunday dawned bright and clear and after the usual amount of tire kicking in the parking lot we were set off on our route – with no detours! A great run south, with “spirited” side trips along windy back roads, took us to Manning Park for a lunch stop and the end of the event. From there we had a straight run down the mountain to the ferry at Tsawwassen. Traffic enroute meant we only caught the 6pm ferry, but nevertheless enjoyed the Pacific Buffet on board.

As there is growing interest from VIR members in track and rally events, we thought this article from sister region Upper Canada, was relevant.
O
ne of the first Porsches that I really liked the look of was a 928. In fact the only other Porsche model that I’ve owned was a 1988 944 Turbo S (951) with a Strosek wide body and wheels that made it look like an asphalt roller from the back. It had an oversized turbo that either stayed sound asleep or slapped me in the back and tried to kill me. Everyone told me, at the time, that it was the ultimate track car so I put my pristine 928 GT up for sale. Recently the man who purchased it contacted me and sent me a copy of an article that I wrote way back then. The subject was the way Porsches are advertised when they are sold. So now that the track season is over, I thought I would share it with you. Other than a little editing, this is what I wrote in 1998 and it’s still largely true today.
I’ve read that one third of all Porsche cars are for sale at any one time (Road & Track). The theory behind this phenomenon is that a Porsche, unlike basic transportation, is a luxury item and therefore can be lived without. Whoever wrote that has never owned a Porsche. I think that it’s more likely that these cars are available because, unlike basic transportation providers, Porsche is always raising the state of the art and producing a product that someone simply must have. The trickle down fleet must be sold to free up capital and storage space. My car is about to suffer this fate.
I have a rather rare 1987 928 with all the GT options. It’s a black on black 5 speed with factory sport seats, polished wheels with gold crests, limited slip, and awesome V8 power. This car has been doted on, tuned and polished by hand since I gave up my last one in 1989. After spending the past few years as an Instructor in UCR’s Driver Education Program, I’ve been offered a phenomenal track car. It’s owned by a friend locally and has a custom wide body by Strosek. I want it, and I want it bad. Like many owners I must now face the reality of space. Not the final frontier, but what I can fit in my shop and still be able to work. I can get one more vehicle in there if I put my desk and the fish tank out in the snow. I considered this because I own a heavy coat and the fish make too much noise anyway. I try to justify keeping the 928 because it makes a great paperweight and the rear wing can support coffee. I really do want to keep it. To figure out its true value I scour the ads in Panorama and insult is added to injury. Why do so many ads say, “Never been tracked”? Is this some sort of option? They make it sound as if never having enjoyed their cars full potential is something to be proud of. It would be like having a 20,000 watt sound system and saying you don’t know what it sounds like because you’ve never turned it up! I realize that some people equate a car that has been tracked with one that is not suitable for driving to the mall. If that’s the problem they should by a big Sport-Ute like everyone else. After all, you need a four wheel drive truck to go shopping don’t you? When you buy a car that has been to the track (do not read “race car”) you buy from an owner who was interested in how to get the most out of their car. This person generally has more than a passing knowledge of the mechanical operation of the car and is

The ball joints were pried on for tolerances, the extra camber thrown in. It’s a little lower and steering rack and linkages where checked, the wheel a little stiffer than a regular 928. The new owner of a tracked car knows that the brake fluid has been changed regularly to prevent corrosion in the system and the brake pads have never been less than half thickness. Tracked cars don’t just go faster, but they stop better than their street only counterparts. This car has a short shift kit, which reduces the throw by 30%. You can shift up and down faster and smoother while eliminating the sloppiness of all that linkage. Tracked cars are generally serviced more often, the lubricants are the best available and the cars are warmed up and cooled down in a controlled fashion. Those twenty-minute track sessions will result in less wear on the engine than jumping into a cold car and running to Mac’s for a lotto ticket.

ometimes you show up to a car event, and it is underwhelming, the people un-enthused, and the whole thing feels run-of-the-mill. Today was the kick-off event for Das Renn Treffen 2018, and if today was a preview of what tomorrow brings, it will be one hell of an event. One of the first things that drew my eye as I rolled up was this incredible, mud covered build by Series900 (@series900).
More on this beautiful car later this weekend...
Lining the clean streets of Miami, everything from classic Air-Coolers to modern day marvels, this was truly a sight for any Porsche fanatic. There is something about this colour that is just, so perfectly Miami to me.
You can't call it a true Porsche event without showcasing some of the best from the factory. What I would do to get behind the wheel of one of these... I very much look forward to my day tomorrow, it was a pleasure to meet some very welcoming people this-morning and check back to this page in the next couple of days for more coverage from DRT 2018.

In addition to the driving events at Black Rock and the October Autocross and Chili Challenge, RIBA Detailing Perfection is hosting a member-only Detailing Clinic with Optional Track Time at VIMC. The detailing clinic is free but there is a fee for those wanting track time. Check the February 2018 Porscher for details. The club is very happy to have Tyson Johnson offer his expertise and enthusiasm as Chair for Competition and HPDE. Tyson designed a 3-part ‘On -Ramp to 2018’ geared to members who may be newcomers to performance driving or those who would like to put the sport back into their sports car. Here is a brief description of that program. If interested; register at MotorsportReg.com http://msreg.com/tyson-part1 or contact him directly competition@virpca.org Part 1- Sunday March 4, @ 9:15 am Health, Conditioning and Driving Basics Trainers from Rehab and Performance (rehabandperform.com ) have developed a program for VIMC members. They’ve then adapted that program for our Porsche Club. We’ll be discussing health, fitness and diet. Tyson will then address seating position, vision and driving basics. This will be applied to a scenic group drive, finishing at Hamsterly Beach. Weather permitting, we’ll continue with some additional fitness and mobility activities while recapping the day’s lessons. Everyone is welcome to retire to a nearby venue for lunch. Part 2 - Sunday April 8 @ 9:15 am - Transfer Beach Park, Ladysmith - Best practices and Techniques: sharpening your skill set After a review of Part 1’s teachings, we’ll explore some more advanced techniques. Then there will be a midisland drive ending in Parksville around noon. Over lunch Tyson will review the morning's experience and set the stage for Part 3 on the track. After lunch, when the session formal has ended, Tyson invites you to join him in mini-golf, bumper-boats or possibly go-karts at nearby facilities. Part 3 - Sunday April 22, @ 9:15 am - Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit - Autocross Clinic: applying dynamic driving practices Working with Victoria Motor Sports Club, (VMSC) instructors, Tyson will explain the basics of autocross. There will be no timing gear at the event. It will be similarly structured to many High Performance Driver Education events, (HPDE). The intent is to develop high performance techniques and explore your car's capabilities in a safe environment. Cars will need to be tech inspected before or at the event and SNELL or FIA rated helmets are required, (there should be ‘loaners’ available). The first two events are complimentary. There will be a fee for the Autocross Clinic. All participants in this program will formally register using motorsportreg. Tyson is looking for advice on the mid-island drive route and restaurant opportunities, so email him if you have some suggestions or if you want to join. The most critical aspect is to PORSCHER — MARCH 2018

elow is a photo taken at Parade in Spokane this year, of Conrad Peden with his award for 1st place in his class in the autocross, in his 1973 914 . Well done to him of course, but…….. It is such an opportunity to use it for one of our Caption Contests!
Not many entries this time, surprisingly, but Wendy Woodley came up with this ….. “NO WONDER Conrad does so well at auto crossing, I see the Michelin man is his Dad!”
