t’s April and we know winter is officially over because we no longer need winter tires (or chains) on the Malahat and other BC roadways. With the mild climate, especially in the south Island, sports car driving can be a year long activity. That said, when the performance summer tires are mounted driving is a lot more fun.

March has been a very busy month. New members are joining in record numbers (see Garth’s column for details). The 2018 Membership Survey results were tabled at the March Board meeting and a summary is presented elsewhere in this Porscher. I attended the PCA Zone 6 Presidents’ meeting and met the presidents of the other nine Regions in our Zone. Black Rock registration continues… yes, there is room. The first of Tyson’s On-Ramp to 2018 Series was well attended…yes; you can register for parts two and three. Didier’s VI Helicopter Tour attracted members wanting an aerial view of the Island. RIBA’s detailing and driving clinic attracted members from all parts of the Island. We are working with Porsche Victoria to introduce their customers to the benefits of club membership. And, lest I forget, the club jacket order is about to be placed so if you want to order one, don’t delay. All of these events are listed on the website and in Porscher. Members describe their experiences and post their photos on our Facebook page. You should check it out.

would like to thank all club members who responded to our survey and spent a few minutes of their time to help improve the club with their feedback on all aspects of VIRPCA but from my perspective about the Porscher newsletter.

As you’ll see from John’s article on the survey, some people want more articles on members, some want more technical stuff, others want articles from members about their Porsche travels etc. I am happy to receive ANY articles from members related to anything Porsche and if you know of somebody that should be profiled in the newsletter, please drop me a line and let me know. I have just submitted 4 newsletters from 2017 to PCA as our submission into their Newsletter of the year competition; April for best article (Fun in the Garage), May and June for best overall issue and September for best cover. I hope you agree.

e conducted a Member Survey to give everyone the opportunity to provide direct feedback to the Board about their experience and the kinds of activities they would like to see in the future. 359 invitations were sent to primary and affiliate members; 179 (50%) responded.

Here are some of highlights: General information on members who responded 58% live in the south Island; 32 % in mid Island; 8 % in north Island 93% own sports cars; 4% own a 4-door Porsche; 3% have both 96% are primary members and 4% are affiliates 20% are first year members; 40% are in years two to five; 20% have been members from six to ten years and 20% 11 years and longer 76% said their 2017 club experience met their expectations and 20% said it exceeded expectations 13% said they would like to be more involved in the club; if you are one of those, please let me (president@virpca.org ) or one of the Board members know. Communication with members When asked where you go for information about the club and its events: 92% identified the president’s regular emails; 88% said Porscher and, 76% mentioned our website; 36% said they reach out to a present or former Board member and 31% mentioned our Facebook page. Members’ interest in events and activities We asked you what events you would enjoy taking part in. From your responses an overall index of interest was created. The following table lists the events sorted with the highest net interest at the top (one day drives, +73%) and the lowest (off road events -59%) at the bottom. “yes”, 46% said “perhaps” and 40% said “no” Porscher Newsletter Newsletters are an integral component of all PCA club communication plan and an important mechanism to engage and retain members. If you have been a member for a few years you will recall that we had no newsletter between 2013 and 2015. Production resumed in 2016 with Steve Fairbrother as editor. Of the 8 issues published in 2017, 80% said they read four or more issues and 6% read none. 31% expressed interest in submitting articles, photos or story ideas; if you are one of those email Steve newsletter@virpca.org Asked if they would pay for a printed and mailed Porscher 6% said “yes” and 73 % said “no” There is room for improvement Many of the survey questions provided an opportunity to say how things could be improved and you took full advantage of the opportunity to speak directly to the Board. The following is representative: Ideas for improving Cars & Coffee: Sundays not the best; how about Saturday? A noon or later start would be better Bring some new Porsches for us to learn about Change location from time to time More cars and coffee at the VIMC track and up Island Sometimes include a drive Send a reminder that it's going to happen by short email blurb to get more and new people out

Ideas for improving the VIRPCA experience: Have more members attend the AGM More events, such as tech sessions, tours, etc., north of Nanaimo More surveys. Get regular members to tell us about themselves Get members to embrace new club joiners More driving events, including promoting our neighbouring PCA regions events Have monthly or bi-monthly social events, meals, presentations by Porsche Plan driving events at Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit It’s up to the individual member to improve the experience, not the club I do seem to get a lot of club correspondence...maybe too much Make an effort to get other members out to cars and coffee Arrange for more visitations, presentations Keep up the dialog with members I think it is on the right track; there is a huge increase in Communication; thanks Ideas for improving Porscher Just advise me of its existence. I get a little busy and may have missed this More stories by members of their Porsche experiences including attending events like club activities parade, Rennsport, Treffen, and travels in their Porsche Tech Q&A column moderated by a qualified mechanic More members’ pictures Something about racing and rallying PORSCHER — APRIL 2018

Page 11

Ideas for improving our website A moderated Porsche Owners’ Forum Really important to have all details correct and updated More frequent updates and pictures from club activities It seems most activity seems to happen on Facebook and other social media platforms, all of which I avoid. It would be nice to see more interaction through the website Ideas for improving our Facebook page Full disclosure: I am not a fan of Facebook I rarely use Facebook, but I have gone to the Facebook page, it can often have more info than the website Let members post through a Facebook Group Keep it current; again that is up to the members Letting members post freely on the site would vastly improve the experience. Final thoughts on the Survey The Board is indebted to the 179 members who took the time to complete a questionnaire and provide advice and suggestions for improvement. Many of you acknowledged the importance of seeking members’ input. We agree and will repeat the survey in the future. VIRPCA is driven (so to speak) by those active members who take part in our socials and tours, track days, driver education sessions and cars and coffee. I encourage you to visit the website, read Porscher and, if you are so inclined, post your photos and comments on our Facebook page. If you have any comments or questions about the survey, please email me.

orsche recently unveiled their concept study of an electrically driven Cross Utility Vehicle, the Mission E Cross Turismo. The Cross Turismo concept is a “go”, using the same mechanical and electrical setup as the first Mission E, due out next year. That means front and rear electric motors, good for 0-100 kph in 3.5 seconds and 0-200 in 12s. It’ll do those numbers even when the battery is fairly depleted – a condition not met by a Tesla. Its claimed range is 500 km, but of course that’ll be significantly eroded for spirited driving we expect. It can be charged on a Level 3 charger from 0 to 80% in around 15 minutes, and will get 100 km of range from just 4 minutes of Level 3 charge, the latter two requiring new – and as yet unavailable in North America – high-power chargers.

The Mission E doesn’t only have the performance of a Porsche, it has the looks of one. Compared with the 2015 show car, the hips have been lost and the suicide doors too, but it still has Porsche DNA.

orsche have also recently announced the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The new high-performance sports car with 383-kW (520-hp; Fuel consumption combined 12.8 l/100 km; CO2 emissions 291 g/ km) and four-litre, high-speed naturally aspirated engine is based on the 911 GT3, which has been refined still further to combine the performance-enhanced engine with a running-gear setup that features re-calibrated rear axle steering designed for maximum dynamics and precision. The 911 GT3 RS accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 3.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 312 kph. Following the launch of the 911 GT3 and the 911 GT2 RS, this latest release will see Porsche present its third GT road-approved sports car within a year. The four-litre, six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine delivers 20 hp more than the engine in the previous model and the 911 GT3. Together with the revs reaching up to 9,000 rpm, it was the ideal choice as a thoroughbred sports engine. Combined with the specially calibrated seven-speed PDK, the high-performance engine guarantees an outstanding driving performance. As with all current GT sports cars, the Clubsport package is available at no extra cost. However the extra cost Weissach package provides further weight reduction, carbon components, reducing weight to 1,430 kgs. The cost in Canada is not quite as high as the 911 GT2 RS but still worth it! (Photos courtesy Porsche.com)

rake dust is a pain in the butt for both car owners and detailers. The stuff seems to build up rather quickly. You can even start to see it one or two drives after you wash the car. The longer you let it stay on the wheels, the tougher it is to remove. Here’s the part I hate. The stuff is corrosive. When combined with water, it will eat through clear coat/paint/powder coat or whatever is on your wheels. I don’t see it often but every once in a while someone brings in a car that hasn’t been well cared for. To the average person, the wheels look really dirty but that’s it. As soon as I start cleaning the first wheel, I can tell that there will be pockets on at least the front wheels where some of the black stains that look like brake dust are actually corrosion that I can’t remove.

Option 2a - if you have powder coated, painted, or clear coated wheels, go find yourself an acid based wheel cleaner. It's supposed to be safe on chrome too. I've never tried it. You're unlikely to find such a product at your local auto parts store. I use Meguiar's D140 Wheel Brightener. D140 is noticeably more effective than non-acid cleaners on dirty wheels. www.meguiars.com/en/professional/products/ d14001-wheel-brightener/ It only comes in a 1 gallon jug and you dilute it 4:1 with water before use so it will last you forever but it only costs $20 US for a gallon. You can buy it on Amazon or from my supply house of choice Autogeek. www.autogeek.net/meguiar-s-wheel-brightener.html

So what can you do? For as long as I've been detailing, people have been asking for a magic wheel cleaning product. I talk with other detailers online all the time. I read about the new products from shows. But there is no magic for brake dust. I’m about to tell you what I tell my customers and friends. And it's the same thing any reputable detailer will tell you.

There are pros and cons to acid based wheel cleaners. The one issue with acid cleaners is that they aren't safe for bare metal or anodized aluminum wheels. The positive is that acid cleaners make cleaning brake dust easier. Some detailers will tell you that using an acid based cleaner and a pressure washer on wheels with light to moderate dust will get them You've got three options. OK, I really don’t consider clean without scrubbing. I've never tried it. But let’s the first option to be an “option” that most of us can all remember, it’s a mild acid. Option 3b - Just like there are polymer (nano... ceramic...) coatings for your paint, those same type of coatings are available for your wheels as well. Find a coating product designed specifically for wheels. Again, you won't find this stuff in stores. The cheapest and easiest product to use (and the one I use) is McKee's 37 Wheel Coating. www.autogeek.net/wheel-coating.html A bottle costs $35 US and you'll probably coat 2 sets of wheels with that bottle. It's simple to apply compared to the coatings for paint. The coating lasts about a year. It's not a miracle solution. Expect things

rainers Steven Inglefield, Tasher Adaarewa and Alicia Derousie (below right) from Rehab and Performance (rehabandperform.com) were at Tyson’s first of 3 events. That started at Porsche Center Victoria on Sunday March 4 where about 30 club members learned about the importance of body position, breathing, sight lines and more from both Tyson Johnson and the trainers. Volunteer members were impressed at how simple stretching improved their abilities immediately—such as Dan Bourlet touching his toes and how shoulder checking could be improved too.

After, the group went on a drive to Hamsterly Beach and then to a nearby restaurant for lunch. See Information on the next session at http://msreg.com/tyson-part2

ichard (Doc) Walton, the proprietor of RIBA Detailing Perfection, hosted a tech event on Sunday March 25. Last year’s clinic was held at his Duncan shop, this year it was at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit. Doc worked his magic on the hood and leather seats of a high mileage, daily driven, black 996 C4, which sorely needed some TLC. The before/after was astounding.

Participants took a break from the detailing session to run an autocross course on the VIMC paddock. Track staff provided pointers on handling and the benefits of a ‘smooth is fast’ approach. A BBQ lunch followed by a Q&A rounded out the day. All of this was provided to club members at no cost by Richard and RIBA. Thank you very much!

RIBA’s next event includes track time on the main circuit as well as a detailing session. It is set for Thursday May 17 and pricing will be announced soon. Contact Richard rich-w@hotmail.com 250-466-4717 for more information or find them on Facebook www.facebook.com/RIBADP

Here is an article from Upper Canada region. Carrying on our competition theme so far this year, here is one by their (now) President Kathleen Wong. Thanks to UCR for providing this.

T

he first sanctioned PCA Upper Canada Region Club Race took place at Mosport in 1996. The 2016 Can/Am Challenge Club Race was the 21st running of our race at the same exciting track, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (“CTMP“ or Mosport) from August 5 to 7. I have been participating in the UCR Driver’s Education (“DE”) program since 1998. Dave Osborne (DE Track Chair), Del Bruce (Worker Assignment) and Stephen Goodbody (Chief Instructor) have built a firstclass DE program and I have witnessed how the program has evolved over the last 18 years. Almost every single DE event was a sold out during the last several years. This is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of the track team and volunteers, and the enthusiasm of the DE participants who show their commitment to the event every year. And, huge kudos to the legion of UCR volunteer instructors who work tirelessly to help students develop advanced driving skills.

ing start of a race, adrenaline is pumping through my veins when I and the other 40+ ‘angry’ racers sit revving our engines before roaring down the front straight of Mosport when the green flag is waived. It’s exhilarating when my car and another car are going side-by-side, probably a door handle from each other, at high speed going through Corner 1.

Then, it depends on who gets the inside line of Corner 2, which is my favourite corner - a blind, highspeed, downhill, double apex, off-camber corner with an elevation drop of 45 feet. I always try to protect my turf at Corner 2 and hold onto the inside line, so my fellow racer still has enough room to be hanging on the outside line such that we can drive down Corner 2 side-by-side.

Being a race car driver was one of my childhood dreams. The DE program was a great stepping stone for me to get into PCA Club Racing. After I had done DE for 10 years, I bought a 1989 944 Turbo S and turned it into a race car. I received my PCA Club Racing licence in 2008 and participated in the Can/Am Challenge Club Race at Mosport every year since then. And I use the DE weekends to practise for this This is the excitement of club racing and the chalmajor event of the year. lenge is to take that beast to the limit but still have control of it at the end of a race. Bruce Boeder, PCA National Steward and a PCA Club Racer since 1992, was at the 2016 Can/Am Challenge Club Race. At the orientation meeting he gave the following tips to rookie racers:

I am a petite woman that weighs about 95 lbs, so I thought I would have a huge advantage over my fellow racers. I know I friends from school) made the video about Roy’s first will never get on the podium, so my goal at every PCA PCA club race experience at Mosport. Club Race is to improve by best lap time by one sec- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctPW2AOrsys ond. The key in racing is lap time consistency, meaning that you have to be as fast as possible in every Yellow Race Group

n Saturday March 24 and Sunday, March 25, I attended a High Performance Driver Training event put on by the Victoria Motor Sports Club, and coordinated by Chief Driving Instructor Paul Whitworth. Saturday’s classroom instruction introduced students to the organizational structures that support automobile racing in the Pacific Northwest, racing safety equipment, course flags, and how to acquire a racing licence. Also some pretty interesting discussion of the laws of physics relating to velocity and friction, and racing videos to illustrate the inflexibility of those laws. Sunday was a track day, held at Western Speedway. Students were put through a sighting exercise to get us used to watching course marshals for flags, then instructors showed us how competition driving is supposed to look by driving us around the course in our own vehicles. What an eye-opener that was! Mike, my instructor, drove my 944 around corners faster than I would have thought possible, on sure footing, with nary a peep from the tires. After four laps, we switched and it was my turn. So much to try to do all at once! Smooth moves with the steering wheel, try to follow the racing line, keep your speed up but brake at just the right time. While we are watching where we are going, we must also remember to watch the tower, the corner marshals, and the mirrors. Goodness! We followed the same pattern of instruction with a second course, run the opposite direction. It had quite a long straightaway, so I got to really take advantage of the 944 Turbo’s horsepower, to keep me ahead of those behind me who were much better at cornering. It’s humbling when you have to work hard to stay ahead of a VW Golf. PORSCHER — APRIL 2018

After lunch, we each had 10 laps on our own. The model really worked for me. The repetition gave me time to practice and process, and by the end of those 10 laps I was driving significantly faster and smoother than I did at the start. There was a short driver meeting for feedback, then we all had another 6 laps. After that, we received our certificates, and the course was complete. Students who pass the course are eligible to apply for a novice racing license with the Confederation of Autosport Car Clubs (CACC) or the International Conference of Sports Car Clubs (ICSCC). The instructors are all experienced racers, and their guidance, comments, and answers to our many questions were helpful and much appreciated. Victoria Motor Sports Club runs at least one driver training session per year, and also runs several autocross events over the course of the year. Other than an approved helmet, no special training, experience or vehicle is required to participate in these events. For more information on driver training, contact Paul Whitworth at driverstraining@victoriamotorsports.ca For a list of events, visit their website at http://victoriamotorsports.ca or their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/victoriamotorsportsclub

yson Johnson’s initial events offer his expertise and enthusiasm as Chair for Competition and HPDE. Tyson designed a 3-part ‘On -Ramp to 2018’ geared to members who may be newcomers to performance driving or those who would like to put the sport back into their sports car. Here is a brief description of the remainder of the program. If interested, please register at MotorsportReg.com so we can ascertain member interest and provide numbers for catering (if relevant). Part 2 - Sunday April 8 @ 9:15 am - Transfer Beach Park, Ladysmith - Best practices and Techniques: sharpening your skill set After a review of Part 1’s teachings, we’ll explore some more advanced techniques. Then there will be a midisland drive ending in Parksville around noon. Over lunch (to be decided where), Tyson will review the morning's experience and set the stage for Part 3. You must sign up for this event at msreg.com/tyson-part2. After lunch, when the VIR session has formally ended, Tyson invites you to join him in mini-golf, bumperboats or possibly go-karts at nearby facilities.

Part 3 - Sunday April 22, @ 9:15 am - Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit - Autocross Clinic: applying dynamic driving practices Working with Victoria Motor Sports Club, (VMSC) instructors, Tyson will explain the basics of autocross. There will be no timing gear at the event. It will be similarly structured to many High Performance Driver Education events, (HPDE). The intent is to develop high performance techniques and explore your car's capabilities in a safe environment. Cars will need to be tech inspected before or at the event and SNELL or FIA rated helmets are required, (there should be ‘loaners’ available). There will be a limit of 35 cars and a fee of $70 per person for this Autocross Clinic. All participants in this program must formally register using MotorsportReg at www.msreg.com/Tyson-part3 (not via Tyson please). Tyson is looking for advice on the mid-island drive route and restaurant opportunities, so email him if you have some suggestions or if you want to join. The most critical aspect is to have the drive end in Parksville

ancouver Island Motorsport Circuit on Sunday March 25th was the venue for their monthly Cars & Coffee morning. As it ran from 9am to noon, there was time to attend our own coffee morning at Eagle Creek, Victoria and then travel up to the Cowichan Valley Highway and still catch up with a few well recognised faces there. Paul Rossmo is the General Manager at the circuit and wel-

comed everyone while enjoying a hot beverage in the lounge overlooking the track. There were quite a few Porsches attending that day and one or two were out on the track enjoying one of the Track Ex-

perience packages on offer. Their next morning is April 29th.
