just returned from what was to be a 911 drive to Albuquerque NM, Boulder CO and then home. At the end of my first day, near Boise ID, my clutch failed and through the PCA network - specifically Mark Prusynski our Zone 6 Rep – I learned of European Motorsport where Hans Filer and his crew replaced it. I have a 2001 996 C4 and in the course of a clutch replacement the IMS bearing – Achilles heel of 996s and 986s - can be inspected and replaced if required. Mine looked fine so it was left in place. There is no guarantee that it will not fail but high mileage daily drivers tend to be at lower risk than others…at least that’s the story I am inclined to believe. Did you know that 2018 marks the 70th Anniversary of Porsche automobile production? In celebrating this, Porsche dealers around the world will host Sports Car Together Day activities. Porsche Victoria is working on a June 10 celebratory event and when we know the details, they will be passed on to you. Porsche Canada is compiling stories and planning activities; have a look: www.porsche.com/canada/en/aboutporsche/70-years It’s not just the cars… and now it’s not just the grown-ups! I want to remind you of PCA Juniors program for enthusiasts under age 18. Participants must be registered by an active PCA member. Any child under age 18 who is registered by a current PCA member can participate in the program. PCA Juniors will receive a welcome package that includes an age-appropriate gift and PCA Juniors ID badge. Participants must be registered by an active PCA member, and there is no cost to join! Parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles can register children in the Juniors Program. Here is a link to more information www.pca.org/pca-juniors As I write this, three VIRPCA families –Ellis, Sherwood and Titterton, are on their way to PCA’s Treffen Tamaya in New Mexico. They will travel through some very beautiful American Southwest landscapes. The next Treffen will take place in Banff, hosted by our friends in the Wild Rose PCA Region. treffen.pca.org Finally, in keeping with the (friendly) competitive driving theme for 2018, next week I will meet with Klaus Kreye and his rally colleagues to consider the possibility of offering a time speed distance (TSD) rally this year on the island. Each car will need a driver and a navigator so you might want to give some thought to forming a team. Are you interested? Drop me an email. It will be fun event.

he final touches are being put into place for the Black Rock charity event happening in a few weeks! The BR Committee has been meeting monthly and sourcing sponsors, advertisers, suppliers etc and we have some great auction items, door prizes and giveaways to be had in Ucluelet in a few weeks. For example — how about a brand new garage floor from Garage Kings or some time at the VIMC circuit or a stay at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort later in the year? Only attendees at Black Rock can get those. Register for the last few spaces here www.msreg.com/blackrock2018. The final schedule with minor changes is shown in this issue. Note that the next issue will be the Black Rock review special, issued around mid-June.

e bought our 2014 Boxster in October of 2017. It had three areas of curb rash on the right front tire while the other three were perfect. I started my search for a “local” shop that could repair the rim and that lead me to Western Wheelcraft. They specialize in repairing painted rims and the ones on my Boxster are clear coated machined rims. I briefly considered allowing Western Wheelcraft to sand and redcoat the rim but everyone that responded to my online queries recommended I NOT take that option. I knew Green’s Automotive www.greensautomotive.com on the Mainland repaired rims so I began to evaluate their services.

Green’s sent me a waybill for Dan Foss couriers on March 29. The driver showed up the same day and took my rim but the rim would not make the trip to Richmond until Monday because of the Easter holiday. On April 4, Green’s called to ask for my charge card number and the courier returned the next day with the rim. They remounted the tire on the rim and balanced it. How is that for service?

Before

I am impressed with the quality of the repair and recommend Green’s for anyone needing to repair their rims.

ast year’s Membership Director Imogen Burr organized a “Spring Fling” for April 15th. 21 drivers met early at Eagle Creek car park and most had a breakfast and a chat at Quality Foods diner. Imogen then led the way through Colwood, Metchosin and then on to East Sooke Road ending at SookePoint where we all parked and looked around an open house right on the end of a bluff with great views over the ocean! I left early but I am assuming everyone got home safely and had a great trip out into the wilds of East Sooke! Thanks to Imogen for organizing the event.

n Sunday, April 8th, twenty VIR Porsche Club members met Tyson Johnson at Transfer Beach Park in Ladysmith to attend the On-Ramp 2018, level 2. This was structured like the classroom portion of a High Performance Driver Education class. Though we talked about helmets, fire-protection and track days the main focus was on two key facets; vision and grip. Vision, as it literally pertains to one’s windshield, headlights and changing weather conditions. Then discussing the figurative; looking ahead on the road or track and planning one’s line through combinations of the 3 corner types. When discussing grip, we delved into tire selection, setup and the importance of smooth and predictable weight transfer, which significantly affects the grip available at each corner of the car. A street drive North to Qualicum Beach, took a couple of detours through Yellowpoint and Fairwinds. We met for lunch at Eaglecrest Golf Club where the staff had set up the banquet room for some additional classroom discussion and a quick and tasty lunch. We looked forward to seeing more smiling faces at On Ramp 2018 – Level 3, Autocross Clinic at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit on April 22nd.

ast Sunday April 22, over 30 club members met at Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit for Tyson’s 3rd part in his driver education events. As this was held at VIMC and included a lunch, there was a reasonable $70 fee to cover the club’s costs. The previous two had been very well attended also and all are aimed at getting club members ready for some more taxing driver events, be they rallies, autocross or high performance runs.

The weather was great and helped put a big smile on everyone’s faces as we started. After some coffee and doughnuts, Tyson held a quick classroom session explaining basic points and the agenda for the event. As this was an introductory autocross session, there were no timing involved, so everyone could concentrate just on their driving technique. Tyson had organised some instructors from Victoria Motor Sports Club (victoriamotorsports.ca) to provide assistance to any driver that requested help to better their autocross experience. Thanks must go to Karl Rhynas, Chris Zarft and Bart Gilmour from VMSC. Tyson also enlisted the help of Conrad Peden and Ernie Kowal, both long time autocrossers who also provided guidance to club members throughout the day. The driving course was held in the east side of the VIMC parking lot. The attendees split into 2 groups, one practiced full acceleration and hard braking and the others circled around cones playing with understeer, tire limits and throttle control. Lots of runs were taken and then everyone swapped over to drive the other course. The 2 cone courses were then combined into one with slaloms and a tightening curve, everyone taking their turn for many runs. Then everyone adjourned for lunch in VIMC’s clubhouse and enjoyed a buffet lunch and after we all continued with the course followed by runs in the opposite direction! At the end of the day, the VMSC guys, Conrad and Ernie gave us a debrief and provided very useful guidance and their philosophies on how to drive an autocross event well. It was a great day with the ability to let our cars loose in a safe way and hopefully everyone gained experience and confidence to enter their first autocross—maybe at Black Rock in a few weeks! I think Dean Philpott performed the best acceleration in his 911 Turbo S Cabriolet. There is some video on our Facebook page of his start and Richard Probst’s GT3 RS start too.

ike most enthusiasts I always wash my own cars but on this occasion, and after a sprinkling of the white stuff, I engaged in that Canadian past time of shovelling snow. In the process I tweaked a back muscle and my car was in need of a wash so I thought I would try for the first time a local touchless car wash. Innocence is bliss! It was New Year's Day and the car wash wasn't busy so I paid my $13.99 plus taxes for a wash and wax. To cut to the chase my car emerged with $1200 damage to the paint work. A cluster of small patches appeared above the licence plate where the clear coat had been removed (see picture on next page). Naturally I reported this, photos were taken and I was referred by the operator to a local body shop. Within 3 hours I was phoned by the operator who informed me the damage was due to stone chips on the vehicle and I was offered $100 as a gesture of goodwill. I requested the same body shop to forward me an estimate which totalled $1265. Needless to say I was not amused.

two factors plus the knowledge that little traffic had used the facility that morning, suggested I had been in the wrong place at the wrong time and the operator had failed to monitor the ratios. I requested a meeting with the operator and was granted an audience. In spite of giving him a print out of this information it quickly became apparent he had had similar conversations in the past and was dismissive of my findings. He did recommend I contact their supplier Turtle Wax and to put it politely I was shown the door. Subsequent correspondence to the CEO yielded no response although at my request I did receive the $100 gift card.

Now aware that Turtle Wax was involved I studied the directions on the back of a bottle of their wax in my garage. It clearly states that “Not intended for.........metalized plastic.....and keep from freezing” None of this carried any weight with the operator and I recognised that it would be cheaper to pay for the repair than take legal action. Short of having taken a photo of my car prior to entering the car wash, nothThanks to the internet I was able to access a trade ing was going to remove the element of doubt about website that listed the pros and cons of touchless car my claim. washes.
