s this is essentially the Black Rock issue of Porscher, you will find stories and pictures of this very successful event in the pages that follow. Black Rock is known across PCA as our marquee event and it is largely due to the dedication and hard work of the event committee, volunteers and sponsors.
Black Rock takes place over four days in May but the committee work begins in September and ends in June with their final report to the Board and to the membership, via Porscher. Dan Bourlet has chaired this committee for the past three years and he deserves our sincere thanks for his work. Thank you very much, Dan, for your leadership and attention to detail. Thank you to the core members of the Black Rock Committee: Dean Aikenhead, Brad Blaney, Tracy Duggan, Steve Fairbrother and Norm Smith. Thank you to Doug Champagne, Sylvia Mansfield, Derek Nickel and Kim Smith for your significant contributions to a fantastic Black Rock 2018. On another matter completely, we send the President’s bi-weekly updates and a link to new Porscher issues using PCA’s proprietary emailer program. They send mail to primary members and those affiliates who have provided PCA with their own unique email address. If you are (or know of) an affiliate/family member and wish to receive club email and regular email from PCA, you can contact National Office here: www.pca.org/ contact Use this link to inform PCA of a change of address or to add/change an affiliate or if you have added or deleted cars from your Porsche garage. We hope to use email for AGM elections this year and it is important that affiliates have the opportunity to vote. You will recall that the membership extended the vote to all members at the 2017 AGM. Please contact me if you have any questions about this. Finally, have a look at the events calendar in this issue of Porscher (p. 58) for upcoming events including a tour of RotorMaxx, a run to Merridale Cidery with the Corvette Club and an overnighter to the Olympic Peninsula Region.
John McGurran President It seems that all the hard work has paid off as the latest total for Black Rock is over $30,000 raised for paediatric cancer support and Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade! That is a record amount that the Club has raised I feel very happy to have been part of it. If you did not go to Ucluelet for that weekend, you may feel a bit left out, but hopefully this "review" issue will show what is was like to be there and experience such a great comradery between Porsche owners. Of course the location helped us too and the wet weather stayed away. I have tried to add captions to most of the photos, but there is a balance of setting the issue out the door and naming everyone—so do not feel bad it you are shown but not mentioned. Ditto with crediting those who have supplied photos, let me know if I missed you and I can add you in the next issue. On a personal note, at Black Rock I entered my first Autocross event in my Macan and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had to leave early to take photos elsewhere, but my time came down over 4 runs from 1m 27s to 1m 20s.

would like to say “Thank You” to everyone who attended Black Rock 2018. Your attendance and generous donations have made another very successful and fun filled event. The charity money raised this year, for “Tour de Rock” was $22,000 and for Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade was $8,300. Truly amazing, Thank You. I would like to thank ALL our sponsors for their financial contributions and great prizes to help make our event special.
Congratulations to some of the big winners; Kevin Johnston winner of Black Rock 3 night stay, Laura Ferreira winner of VI Motorsport Circuit track day, Henning Wulff winner of VI Motorsport Circuit track day sponsored by Perci Hala, Conrad Peden winner of “Tour de Rock” drinking glasses with challenge coins, Barbara Gumbel winner of Black Rock Oceanfront Resort 3 night stay, Scott & Leah Mihalchan winner of “Dinner by Dean”, Dan Bourlet garage flooring, Norm Smith “veggie be gone”, and many other great prize winners. Weather was a bonus — sunny, blue skies for Autocross, HPDE, Overland Tour, Wild Pacific Trail Discovery Walk, Show & Shine, Poker Rally, Porsche Parade, beach BBQ & fireworks, Saturday Pancake Breakfast and even the Whisky tasting.
Special thanks to Steve Cropper and all the HPDE Instructors, Tyson Johnson HPDE Classroom Instructor and Conrad Peden, Chuck, & Rick for the Autocross Track. It was great to see returning members, friends and new members all having fun and talking about our common interest. In this issue, there are some great pictures by Steve and others of this beautiful area, fantastic cars and people having a good time. Again, thank you for all of your support and all the time contributed by the Black Rock Committee members.

ear Porsche Club members:
Thank you for your incredible support of the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. In its 21st year, this island-wide event relies heavily on the support from local communities in order to raise money for pediatric cancer research and support programs like Camp Goodtimes. Your support makes a difference to the lives of children and their families living with cancer. In 2018, we will continue to work hard to increase the childhood cancer survival rate and ensure children have a good quality of life after cancer treatment. The research and services required to do this are made possible by caring individuals like yourselves. Thanks to you, kids with cancer and their families will have a chance to take a timeout from all the fears and stresses of a childhood cancer diagnosis and enjoy time together at Camp Goodtimes. Camp is a place where everyone understands what it’s like to have childhood cancer, and where children and families find support and build life-long friendships. I think the campers themselves, and their families, say it best: “Camp gives kids like me a place to go where we can be ourselves and everyone understands and no one
stares. We can just be regular kids.” “We are so grateful that this camp exists. It gave our daughter memories that will last a lifetime. It was inde-
scribable for us as parents to see her so happy! Brought tears to our eyes! Finally, a smile, not pain!!” “Our daughter had just been re-diagnosed and was feeling very down, as was her sister. They both came back from camp totally full of energy and ready to take on the world.” Every year, 110 kids in BC are diagnosed with cancer. This news changes everything for their families, their friends and their communities. With your gift, you are sending kids with cancer to Camp at no cost and helping them rediscover fun and friendships at a time when they need it most.
We could not continue this critical work without your generous contribution. You are touching lives and hearts. Kaila Pilecki Manager, Leadership Giving Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon

Dear VIRPCA, Thank you so much for inviting Jacqueline and I to participate in the Black Rock weekend. I was honoured to be so warmly welcomed and included in Saturdays events. The only regret I have is not taking our Volkswagen Atlas to the track and putting it up against the amazing cars that were there! I had been told by several prior Tour De Rock riders that the Black Rock event was a highlight of the Tour for them and I must agree that you have set the bar high. We met amazing people and will cherish the memories forever. Which is about how long it will take me to save up and buy Jacqueline a Porsche now that she got to ride in one. I have a lot of overtime to work to make that happen. Thanks Kevin! The generosity that you have shown will send 15 kids with cancer to Camp Pringle! This is an amazing accomplishment! You all have my heart felt gratitude and appreciation. With the help of generous donors like you, the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock raised over $1.4 million towards the Canadian Cancer Society's mission to eradicate childhood cancer and improve the lives of children and their families living with cancer.
Constable Shane Coubrough RCMP Nanaimo Cops for Cancer Tour Rider Shane still has some Tour de Rock challenge coins remaining that can be purchased through him for $20. If you want to know about Change Coins, just Google it and look in Wikipedia. The coins are unique for this year’s Tour de Rock as you can see below in the photos. Shane said he can provide a coin and ship it to members for $20 each. The coin is in a protective pouch and so keeps it’s pristine appearance. Please contact Shane at stroker_406@yahoo.com to order, it’s all for a great cause.

orry to take so long to thank you and all the VIR members for a wonderful event at Black Rock. Linda and I hope to attend again, many times, if possible. When we talked to Tim Hagner about “must attend” events in each of the Zone 6 Regions, the first one he mentioned was Black Rock. The only place on the island that we had ever been was Victoria, not unlike many, I’m sure. We had to learn some geography to figure out where Black Rock was. We were happy to join a group at Nanaimo for a drive over to Port Alberni for a very appropriate German lunch before driving the rather interesting road over to Ucluelet. I was also surprised to meet my old friend Perci. The resort and rooms were fantastic, but the Club’s relationship with the local people was really impressive. As I was washing the bugs off the Cayman after the drive from Portland, a young man walked by and asked when there would be fireworks. I had to confess I really didn’t know, but asked if he was a local. He said yes, and he always looked forward to seeing the Porsche Club and joining us for the bonfire and fireworks. As I said at the Sunday breakfast, the way the Club shared with the community should be a model for every other region. The volunteer firemen and Ucluelet citizens seemed to really enjoy the barbeque. Someone proudly pointed out the VIR grill badge on the front of the fire department’s ATV rescue vehicle. The idea of inviting everyone to meals served by the fire department and donating the proceeds is perfect. Someone really figured out who to talk to about having a huge bonfire and fireworks display on the beach. Linda and I didn’t participate in the autocross or DE, but went out to watch the autocross and I started to get the itch again. Eight runs on a great course with instructors made me think I gave up autocrossing too early. Maybe next year.
You have a great group and a fantastic location. As I said with every bit of sarcasm I could muster, “The problem with you Canadians is that you take yourselves too seriously.”

fter driving through our great Vancouver Island scenery and some twisty roads on the way to Ucluelet, 2018 attendees arrived at the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort, which is situated right on the ocean edge next to Big Beach and has a choice of rooms within the hotel or separate Pacific Trail suites. There is lots of on-site parking for all our Porsches and there is an area for car wash-
ing too. The resort is a favourite for winter storm watching.

This was our first year using MotorsportReg.com for Black Rock registration and it went VERY well according to Dan and Brad, who had a lot less administration work to do behind the scenes as MSR did it all for us including the financial side of things too. Thanks to Porsche Centre Victoria for supplying us with lanyards and name tags this year, which saved us some money. Although there was an accident on the Malahat causing some Victoria attendees to be very late, all those who arrived, checked in, registered, signed the necessary PCA waivers and collected their Goodie Bag which this year included;:- red or white wine, collapsible wash bucket, wash mitt, wash cloth, car wax, chocolates, drinks tickets and other items. Later in the afternoon Thursday, a whiskey tasting was held in the resort’s wine cellar, where for a donation, attendees sampled various whiskies from Shelter Point Distilleries. This appeared to go down very well judging by the smiling faces that I noticed!

peaking to attendees at the tasting, I came across 2 couples who were recently married, in fact Gordon and Farah Halkett got married the day before! So many congratulations from all at the VIR to them and we feel honoured for them to have their honeymoon at our Black Rock event!
Kim Strynadka and Lee Odgers also got married about a month or so before Black Rock and we wish them a very happy marriage too. The two couples are shown here at the whiskey tasting. Gordon and Farah left, Kim and Lee right.

ur Welcome Social was held on Thursday evening in the resort lobby and the bar. This was where Black Rock “first-timers” and seasoned attendees mingled while enjoying beer, wine and conversations about almost anything but especially their Porsches. Mid-way into the evening, some delicious food was brought out and after a long drive, attendees enjoyed sampling what the resort kitchen had to offer.

riday’s weather at the Tofino Long Beach Airport taxiway was a bit breezy with patchy sun & clouds however that meant that the wind kept the bugs away from the autocross attendees. Conrad Peden and his team of cone layers and instructors did a great job throughout the event. You can see from the map below the number of cones required to provide such a challenging course again this year. There were a fair first time autocrossers so they went out slowly initially and some had instructors advising them, but after a while, their times dropped and as usual, smiles were seen everywhere! The UVFB supplied a BBQ lunch by donation from attendees and then everyone was back on the track for their second session and of course, if you go on the track, you have to take your turn at flagging/marshalling too!

We hope everyone found it useful before venturing out onto the HPDE track at the airport.

ne of the most popular events at Black Rock was the UVFB BBQ where the local fire brigade cook burgers, chicken, salmon and white fish which had been caught that day so it was fresh as can be! There was also lots of other food to eat:- salad, fruit, chips, drinks, cookies and desserts.
Dean Aikenhead our Mid-Island Director, who has many years experience as a chef, created 2 very large bowls of Paella, which was very tasty indeed—Dean has graciously provided a recipe for paella in this issue so you can recreate it at home—but maybe in a smaller quantity?

hile the BBQ was in full swing, Dan Bourlet and Brad Blaney were busy setting the placement of the fireworks on Big Beach. When dusk approached, the fireworks began and could be enjoyed from the beach where many attendees and local Ucluelet folk watched, along with attendees watching from the bar and their own rooms too. Thanks also to UVFB who tended the bonfire and ensured everyone was safe during the event.

arly Saturday morning in the resort’s parking lot, the UVFB set up their BBQs again, but this time for a Pancake Breakfast where they repeated last year’s chocolate vs blueberry pancake contest. I don’t know who won this year but both were certainly very tasty and from what I saw, everyone enjoyed what the UVFB had cooked again. Thanks UVFB.

confess, I have no pictures of the HPDE this year as I was at the Show & Shine on the pier while the HPDE was taking place and despite my request for any Black Rock photos for attendees, none of the HPDE have been sent to me. So here are some more of the Autocross—many drivers and theirs cars were at both autocross and HPDE anyway so I expect this may be a pretty accurate representation of attendees!

Shannon Szymczakowski, the Wild Pacific Trail’s administrator said… “Tracy and Ted Eeftink lead the walk. Tracy has been an outdoor guide for 35 years. Ted was born in Ucluelet and enjoys sharing his knowledge of history. They are both board members of the Wild Pacific Trail Society and owners of Majestic Ocean Kayaking. Ted is the Fire Chief for Ucluelet. Seven people attended the walk. Ted and Tracy covered storms, the forest, the wildlife, the ferns, salal and geology. They spoke about Oyster Jim Martin, the trail’s founder, his vision and efforts and how the trail has changed Ucluelet for the residents and for tourism. Attendees were asked to leave a donation for the trail at Blackrock’s front desk.”.

he auction at the banquet this year raised a record amount (from VIR) for Cops for Cancer! Well done to everyone involved. There were some really great auction items (and a crazy one!) however we had some determined bidders for the items that had been donated by our sponsors (see elsewhere for our sponsor list). The highest bid item was Dinner by Dean (dinner and wine for 8 people, prepared at your home) which raised an astonishing $4,500 by Leah & Scott Mihalchan—thank you very much.
