lease note that our Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday November 4th at a place to be announced. We plan to make this a fun meeting in a great location, mark your calendar.
Last year you set a quorum requirement of 5% of the eligible members. As of August 1 that is 27 members and by November it may be up to 30. All primary and affiliate/family members are eligible to vote and run for a position on the Board. One thing we do at every AGM is elect Board members for the upcoming year. At this point in time I am aware of one vacancy. Wendy Woodley is stepping down from her position of North Island Director. If you are interested in filling this role, please email Club Secretary Michael Holan secretary@virpca.org. If you are - or if you know of - an enthusiastic club member living north of Parksville, please consider joining the Board. Contact info for all Board members is on the website and in Porscher. Got a question? Just ask one of us. There are no specific tasks for the three area directors (we have one for the south and mid island areas too). You attend board meetings and bring your experience and ideas to the Board. You contribute to planning and oversee the responsible operation of the club. While most of the meetings are in Victoria (summer) and Duncan (winter) we try to schedule one in the north—alas, that did not work out this year. You can participate in Board meetings by teleconference or video conference (once we get the technology working). While the North Island Director position is the only declared vacancy right now, all positions are available. If you would like a copy of our constitution and bylaws, please email me. Hope you had a great time at the Motor Gathering. I hope to see you at the New Member Social on September 9.

n August 26th, over 40 Porsches took their places on the asphalt at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit in support of GAIN’s 7th annual Motor Gathering. Most, though not all, were VIR members. With over 400 cars and over 7500 spectators, the event raised $56,218 for the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation and $100,000 for the David Foster Foundation.
The weather was agreeable: overcast but not raining, not too hot and not too cool. Vancouver Island Region members came from up and down the Island, and had ample opportunity to meet, greet, catch up, and still have a chance to see some of the other great cars on display. Our club won the prize for Best Car Club Display thanks to all the Porsches that attended, the club tent and banners, giveaways to kids, and information about the benefits of club membership. We have a nice trophy and a cheque for $500. The prize was accepted by VIR’s Motor Gathering organizational crew. Shown in the picture are Treasurer Tim Evans, Membership Director Garth Webber Atkins, and Competition and Education Chair Tyson Johnson. Missing is Mark Ferris. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it a fun and successful day.

The last two years have flashed by in a heartbeat. When we first created Werks, the plan was to make a brand that encapsulated the lifestyle of the driver, my passion for anything with a motor, and the escape that driving represents. When Porsche got in touch with us to get acquainted with the new 718, and share the experience, it was a dream come true.
With the 718, there is no doubt that from conception to final product, Porsche set out to build the ultimate drivers car. Firstly, the 718 is a mid engine car and by eliminating the rear seats, you gain a weight distribution that equals unprecedented handling ability. We were throwing this thing at every type of corner and it never once felt like it wasn't literally glued to the road. With weight an obvious concern, every component of this car is thought out, pounds are saved wherever possible, and what this means for the experience is that it feels light and nimble to the touch, reacting to every driver input directly. Ultimately, what I am trying to say here, is that I have had the pleasure of driving many insanely engineered and incredible cars, but at the end of the day driving is about one thing only -- the experience. The time that we spent with these two 718s was one of the most unforgettable driving experiences we've ever had. We'll be undoubtedly talking about it for years -- those crisp mornings and late nights flying through the twisted Quebec roads. The sound of that turbo charged Boxster four howling to 7500 rpm and barking on downshift. The feeling of the seat pressing hard against your side as time after time, we would turn in hard into a bumpy unsure corner and the 718 would fly out of the other side completely confident. PORSCHER — SEPTEMBER 2018
Page 11
We would be filming and hitting the same section of bends, going back and forth to get the best shot, pushing the speed and trying to find the limit of the car, and the 718s were in their element, tackling every challenge and difficult situation with confidence.
A lot of car people spend their lives searching for the perfect car, the perfect drive -- modifying, buying, selling their way through different models. When the sun and stars align, and you have literally the perfect car for the conditions, that is a moment of bliss. In the two weeks we had the 718s, we had just about every spring condition imaginable, varying road conditions and traffic, and never once did I think this wasn't the best car for the situation. When a brand like Porsche, with unparalleled racing history, perhaps a collection of the best cars ever built, sets out to build a car for the everyday, for the driver, and they succeed -- the product is what every single petrolhead dreams of - the perfect driving experience.

t 9:30 a.m. July 25, fifteen intrepid people in 11 cars, gathered at the Drumroaster Coffee at Valley View Center to embark on a journey of exploration through the back roads of the Cowichan Valley headed North to the roadside haven of Coombs.
me to lead them on this journey. Hopefully people are inspired to take a route less-traveled in the future and with luck took notice that we passed by at least eleven different pubs along the way (for reference) should they wish to return. Happy driving.
We buckled up and left after our morning kick start of coffee and traveled through Cowichan Bay, past the Dean Aikenhead old stone church, made our way as a group to Maple Mid-Island Director Bay passing by roadside farms and B&B’s. Turning towards Crofton, travelling along Osborne Bay Road, we made our way to Chemainus passing the Silvermine jewelry store. Continuing on toward the first stop we were still a tight group as Saltair and Ladysmith came into view. Cabriolet (convertible for those that don’t know) participants were enjoying the magnificent sunny hot weather. Ladysmith was our first stop and you could feel excitement set in as we approached the Old Towne Bakery for cinnamon buns that we knew were waiting. Once we had our fix of breads and pastry we pushed on up-island with a side trip through Yellow Point and Cedar. After the relaxing meandering back-roads we took a quick little blast from Nanaimo to Nanoose Bay and arrived at our next stop, the Rusted Rake Farm, to re-collect ourselves. Then we passed by Fairwinds Golf Course while making our way to Nanoose Edibles Farm where we took an opportunity to stretch and consider produce for dinner. The final segment had the group driving to Parksville with a turn onto the Alberni Highway and on to our destination, Coombs Old Country Market known for the goats on the roof. Cuckoo’s, where we ate lunch, had the table set for us in the shade of the patio where we indulged in a Paesano lunch (an exclusive meal served on platters for all to share, in the Italian tradition of celebrating life with food, friends and family) consisting of two types of salads, two types of pizza and two types of pasta. VIRPCA Rally – Sign up soon he club is planning to hold it’s first ever TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) rally on Sunday 23rd September. Are you wondering what this is all about? …….. Are you interested? I hope so, lots of people have been planning this event for the last few months – here is how it’s all going to unfold:
Rally Schools 2 September – 12 noon Sawmill Pub, 3055 Oak St, Chemainus
No-host lunch starts at 11:30 – School at 12 noon I can do a quick run-through of the Info session as well 16 September - 10am Quality Foods upstairs boardroom – Eagle Creek Village, Helmcken Rd, View Royal This will be a more detailed preparation for the day of the rally. We will go over the route-book and show you how the timing is calculated. We can prepare the route-book completely so that you are 100% ready for the day of the event.
The Rally—23 September On the day of the event we will meet in the Mill Bay area (details to be advised), hold the last briefing, put the numbers (decals) on the cars and then you’ll be able to start the rally. This is not going to be one or two hours of solid rallying and driving. The event will be split up into 3 regularity sections with some easy driving in between and opportunity to park, stretch your legs, compare notes and ask questions. Thinking back to my own first rally, the first section was quite a steep learning curve, especially considering I did not have the benefit of any info session or school!!!!! So the idea is to apply any learnings to the second and third section in order to have more fun. The rally will end somewhere in the Duncan area where we will all gather for a late lunch and swap stories … and receive our scores!
Folks, this is all about getting out, driving our cars and having fun! …. All at “normal” speeds within the law. Doing it in the rally format adds the time dimension which puts an entirely new perspective into driving. Please register for the rally online via MSR at http://msreg.com/ rally1

n the cool morning of July 19, 2018, thirty six VIRPCA members gathered at Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit for a perfect day of driving and technique improvement. We won a half day at the track at the 2017 GAIN Motorsport Gathering for being the car club with the largest number of participants. It didn’t take long for the group to unanimously opt to add another half day to it; making it a full day at a small cost to participants. Ultimately, there were 32 Porsches of all shapes and sizes and 4 non-Porsche vehicles...who tried their best to keep up. Grin here. After registration and a drivers’ briefing we broke into our run groups with lead instructors for the track sessions. The fun was under way and smiles were wide. Thankfully Christian, of Christian Roy Photography, was onsite to capture the smiles and our works-of -art-on-wheels in motion. He skillfully snapped amazing pictures of everyone, although I did notice there were a few photobombs by a little dark grey Cayman S. Smiles ebbed as concentration took over in the need to meet the demands of the track. After a couple of hours of taking turns we broke for a Mexican taco lunch and then we were at it again until 4 p.m. After the debrief and draws for swag it was time settle, reflect, recognize and thank all the people that made this day happen. Thanks to VIMC’s Paul Rossmo, John Le, Adrian and his track crew, for ensuring we had fun and for the great tips to help us improve, and the hospitality crew for making sure we were well-fed and hydrated. Thanks to Christian Roy, the photographer for skillfully recording the day with artful photos, the members who turned out for the Motorsport gathering in 2017, and the VIRPCA executive board with special shout-outs to Steve Fairbrother, Newsletter Director, without his assistance setting up the online registration none of this would have happened so smoothly, and to Tyson Johnson, Competition and Driver Education Director, for surprising us by being available in the morning to do some ride-alongs and offer improvement tips. Lastly, thanks to all the participants whose good-natured camaraderie marked the sprit of the day with anticipation, fun, excitement and lots of smiles. Looking forward to doing it again

’m on a fast lap and have a couple more left in the session. There’s nobody ahead of me. I’m coming in hot to the final corner (the off-camber, down-hill, right-hand, 911-killer). I’m going to use the whole inside curb to straighten my line. As I approach the inside cone with my front right, I notice the photographer trained on my apex clip. I imagine the glossy print on my study wall; head on, the inside front tire ever-so-slightly lifted off the curbing. I give it the berries! Perfect apex. But I’m on it a half a car-length too early and she starts heading wide out of the corner and is drifting closer to the wall and I know I can’t let up at all or the rear will break loose and I can’t bear down or she’s going to drift out faster and I can’t steer any more right because I’m afraid I’ll lose the only front-end grip I’ve got and she’ll slip away. So here I am at maybe 80k just out of a corner, with all four wheels pointed down the straight in front of the clubhouse and the car crabbing left toward the wall at like 20 degrees off-centre and leaving a long greasy black line on the left and there’s nothing I can do but sit there and wait. Strange places we find ourselves. (woo-hoo!)

t the 2017 Zone Presidents’ Meeting I spoke with the Olympic Peninsula Region, OPR, and we both agreed that after being neighbors for so long that we were both overdue to host a co-event. Over the course of the next year we spoke off and on until we settled on venues and dates for the Olympic Rally tour.
But before I could lead our Vancouver Island members on the tour I had to take care of a significant problem. My 914 hadn't seen pavement in a year and the motor was sitting on the floor. My 928 hadn't seen pavement in five, but is at least in one piece. So out of moth balls came my 928. A quick oil change and it will be ready to go, right? Not so much. It had developed a hard warm start problem. So I whisked it down to a shop for a fuel injection pressure test. After a new fuel pump check valve, it was starting much better and good thing too because the tour was just 7 days away! But Murphy, being the friend of mine he is, struck again. An old seal in the power steering rack gave out and emptied all the fluid on the shop floor. Undeterred, I whipped off the pump belt and strong armed the car back home from the shop. That night I was on the phone ordering a new steering rack, tie rods and boots. Four days later everything arrived and that night I swapped out the old steering rack. After a tape measure alignment, the next morning it was down to another shop for a proper alignment on Friday the 27th. Luckily everything lined up and we were all set for tomorrow morning. The next day on a warm July 28th morning, 10 members met at the Coho Ferry terminal in Victoria. July delivered us a blue sky morning with some fog on the straight. Loading went well other than the old 1959 MV Coho traffic lanes aren't very wide. I ended up getting stuck in my 928 until loading was finished. After some "interesting" juggling by one of the deckhands, I was finally liberated!
PORSCHER — SEPTEMBER 2018

We disembarked in Port Angeles and traveled a short distance to the Kokopelli Grill. Where we met up with 4 more Vancouver Island members who had come over Friday to make a total of 14 VIR members. Also in attendance were 12 members from the OPR. A special thanks to Pete Bonfrisco, Maryann Elwell and Robert Bernardo of the OPR, who all helped to co-ordinate the event. After a lovely lunch and safety meeting, we all collected in the parking lot and headed out for Pillar Point. The tour leader, Pete Bonfrisco lead us on an exhilarating blast along the Straight of Juan de Fuca Hwy. I've never traveled this road but it reminds me of our Port Renfrew loop on Vancouver Island. Sweeping turns, elevation changes, lovely tree canopies and of course no rustic road would be complete without bUMps. After arriving at Pillar Point we got out and stretched our legs for a while. Taking in the coast with the morning mist still hugging the landscape. Then we set out for our farthest point west, Clallam Bay Spit park where we stopped for a group photo. At this time the group separated to have a little time before meeting for dinner that night. Later that evening we all met at the Alder Wood Bistro in Sequim. Some additional OPR members joined us that evening for dinner as well. The restaurant was cute, but more importantly the parking lot was impressive with all that hardware outside. I took a break before desert to take in all the incredible Porsche's parked there. After that we all retired to our hotels. Bright and early Sunday morning, a smaller group of us met at the Olympic Nation Park Visitor Center before the park opened. Around 6:50am we headed out from the parking lot and up Hurricane Ridge lead by Robert

Bernardo. What an amazing hill climb at that time of the morning! No other cars on the road and only the occasional squirrel or fallen rock to worry about. Three tunnels on the climb also allowed my 928's enthusiasm to be echoed back on mine. The park appears to be well funded because the road surface was perfect with new pavement also being laid. What a thrilling stretch of road. I encourage every member to experience an early morning run up to Hurricane Ridge at least once! Not to be undone by the great road, the mountains put on a spectacular vista once at the top of the drive. Glacier views and on a clear day, a virtually unlimited views to the horizon. We ended the event at the top of the ridge so that everyone could have some free time to enjoy the area before catching the ferry home. I'd like to thank the Olympic Peninsula Region for hosting us and we look forward to hosting them soon!

In my last article I covered the use of traditional wax products for paint protection. Today I’m going to talk about the latest hot topic in paint protection, polymer based paint coatings. But first, it’s time for a quick review of the mantra for keeping your car’s exterior in shape. Before I’m done, you’ll be sick of reading these five steps, but you’ll know them well. Clean – Washing the exterior removes “above the surface” contamination. That’s the stuff that isn’t bonded to the paint. We covered this in a previous issue. Decontaminate – Decontamination removes bonded and embedded contaminants from the paint. This leaves a nice smooth surface for maximum gloss. We covered this previously. Polish – Polishing removes scratches, swirls and other damage to your paint. We covered this previously. Protect – The paint is now in great shape and we need to apply some protection. In this issue we’ll talk about using polymers to protect our paint. Maintain – Once we have our car cleaned and protected, it’s far easier to maintain that state of cleanliness than it is to let the condition degrade, such that you have to go through this process again. What is paint protection – I’ve already covered what paint protection is in much more detail in my previous two articles. Just to refresh your memory, paint protection is a barrier between your paint and the environment that provides some level of protection from chemical attack. The new kid on the block – Until recently, paint protection meant wax. About 7 years ago a new option showed up on the market. These products carried marketing names that included terms like Glass Coat, Nano Coat, Ceramic Coat, or Quartz. These products are all polymer resin based and contain either silicon dioxide (SiO2), titanium dioxide (Ti02), or silicon carbide (SiC). Those tiny SiO2 or TiO2 particles are where the ceramic, nano, and other similar names come from. Most detailers refer to this new class of prodPORSCHER — SEPTEMBER 2018

When properly applied and allowed to cure, the lifetime of a paint coating is measured in years, typically beBy Bill Elwell tween 2 and 5 years, depending on the product. Purposely removing a coating can only be accomplished by mechanically removing it with aggressive buffing or by dissolving it chemically. One can, therefore, argue that, compared to waxes and sealants, paint coatings are “permanent”. Long lasting coatings - If you know about coatings then the type of product you most likely think of is the professionally applied products that last for years. From here on I’m just going to call these products “coatings” or “paint coatings”. Let’s talk about the characteristics of this class of product. These are professionally applied products (we’ll talk about potential DIY application in a minute). This is a costly process. Coating a car like a 911 can cost between $600 and $1500 or more depending on who does the work and what products are used. The finished car has a shine to it that some people say makes it look like the car is covered in glass. The darker the paint the better. Dark colors look absolutely stunning after being coated. The surface of the car is very slippery. Dirt doesn’t stick to a coated car as easily as a waxed car. This make car care much easier. Other than the cost of application there is only one other issue with coatings. Coatings do not tolerate water spots well. Water spotting on a waxed car can typically be addressed with either a quick detailer spray or with some light polishing. On coated cars, water spots from hard tap water requires compounding, then polishing. This removes most, if not all, of the coating in that spot. It’s best to have that panel recoated at that point. All this doesn’t mean your coated car can’t get Page 34

lan Newbert sent in the picture below of 3 generations of Porsche Boxster. Thanks Alan! He says “I am enclosing some pictures that I shot in Campbell River. These are all Boxsters, 986, 687, 981.
2 of the cars were mine, yellow and silver and the grey car was Bob Martin's. We just thought it would be cool to have the three cars, each in a different series.” Thanks Alan, a great idea to show the models next to each other (but now you should buy a 718 too!). If anybody else can do the same with other models and your friends cars, then send us the photos please.
