s you will read elsewhere in this issue of Porscher, we had a great turnout of members and guests at our New Member Social on September 9. As you know, it’s my view that the New Member Social is the most important event on our club’s calendar. Kudos to Membership Director Garth Webber Atkins for making this a memorable event, particularly those who joined in the last 12 months. After lunch, Garth unveiled the club’s newly-minted lapel pin, a finely crafted replica of our logo. Pins are for sale to all members for $5. Another feature of the Social I want to highlight is the presentation of the club’s Enthusiast of the Year award for 2018. In honouring our Enthusiasts we get to the core of the club’s mission and values. We honour individuals who have been exemplary participants in club activities and who epitomize the spirit and values of the Porsche Club of America. This year’s Enthusiast is Nanaimo resident and long-time PCA member Dan Bourlet. Many of you will know Dan as the architect of our recent highly successful Black Rock events, but more than that, Dan is that member who truly gets what PCA strives to do for the community as well as for its members. Congratulations Dan! Here is a brief history of Enthusiast winners: 2017 – Al & Jacquie Sherwood 2015 – Malcolm & Lucille Baster 2010 – Ernie Kowal & Peter Beyeler 2008 – Ernie Yakimovich 2006 – Ernie Kowal 2004 – Brad Blaney & James Bartlett 2002 – Ron Young 2000 – Gary Glover 1998 – Cindy Spainer 1996 – Conrad Peden

ell, that was an interesting and in some places, frantic Sunday. As you will read in this issue, Brad Blaney and I entered into the Club’s 1st TSD Rally. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as did everyone else from the comments we heard in the Genoa Bay Cafe while we ate at the end of it.
If you held off entering this time because it was a “new thing” for you and your Porsche, come and join in next time, probably in the Spring, you will have a great day. You can either enter and “wing it” to see how things go or do a bit more preparation on timing/ speed — either way, it is a great way to spend time with fellow club members!

aturday, September 8, 2018 Prior to all roads trips we started with cleaning, detailing and a vehicle pre-trip check. Sadly that pre-trip check resulted in replacing the battery in the Cayman. Many thanks to Porsche Centre Victoria Service and Parts for their stellar service and ensuring we had what we needed to carry -on (even though it was their day off!). There were only a couple of panicky moments after the new battery was installed and until the computer reset itself (clearing the failure code). Sunday, September 9, 2018 The car was packed and we and were set to go. Squeezing on to the ferry (one of the last 3 cars) we were able to make it to our first stop on our journey, Whistler. Through torrential rain on the Sea to Sky highway we saw only one accident (on the other side of the road from us, thankfully). In Whistler we enjoyed lunch at Caramba followed by a leisurely walk through the village, some retail therapy and later had a lovely dinner at Araxi. Monday, September 10, 2018 After fueling ourselves with Starbucks we tackled the Duffy Lake Road to Lillooet. Whenever you have an opportunity to drive that road, we recommend it, curvy, twisty, great scenery and folks generally move out of the way. Beyond Lillooet the rest of our route to Revelstoke for the night was long and winding taking us through Lytton, Ashcroft, Logan Lake, Merritt and through the Nicola Valley to Kamloops then onto the #1 to Revelstoke. Again, great scenery and very relaxing as it seems to be roads less-travelled. Sadly, our hope of having pie at the Shuswap Pie Company in Salmon Arm were dashed – they were CLOSED. Most disappointing. Yes…we will make that a future road-trip for sure. Let us know if you’d like to take that journey with us. In Revelstoke we ate at the Taco club which was excellent food, very reasonably priced, and all done in-house. Delicous. Be sure to also visit La Baguette in Revelstoke they have a great selection of deli items.
PORSCHER — OCTOBER 2018
Tuesday, September 11, 2018 Today - to Banff. After the routine cappuccino fuel-up we blasted up to the top of Mount Revelstoke. The road boasts 17 hairpin corners and we drove through clouds to the top which resulted in some spectacular views of the valley. Back down at a more sedate rate of speed and off to Field for our first stop to eat at the Spotted Pig Bistro, excellent food and even though we arrived during the lunch rush we were in/out quickly. Next stop, Banff Springs Hotel to check in and relax along-side Porsches doing the same thing. Wednesday, September 12, 2018 We were tourists-in-our-old-hometown and rode the Sulphur Mountain Gondola before the crowds and clouds moved in. After that we simply enjoyed the town of Banff and even bumped into Porsche folks we had met at the 2014 Porsche Parade in Monterey; nice to reconnect. Then we checked-in to Banff

Treffen and attended the Social followed by a good steak dinner at Melissa’s Misteak Restaurant in town with other VIR PCA members. Thanks to Henri and Liz Ellis for making the dinner arrangements for our group to be together. Very nice evening. Fyi, nothing has changed at Melissa’s except the prices, always a very good consistent meal at Melissa’s. Thursday, September 13, 2018 Up early for a hot breakfast each day before the drives, organized as part of Treffen. Delicious. Add in the cappuccino stop and then everyone was up to Mt. Norquay ski hill – through a bit of snow - to muster up for the drives. Today we participated in the Yoho loop tour which included a stop at, the Circle Tunnel (a train tunnel) in time to witness a train going in and coming out of the tunnel (great timing tour guides!), Takakkaw Falls, the Natural Bridge and Emerald Lake Lodge for Lunch. It was snowing pretty heavily at the falls so unfortunately we couldn’t see to the top of them and after fifteen minutes we returned to our cars covered gently by Mother Nature in snowy white blankets. Coming out of the road to the falls we had the happy circumstance of passing by the next tour group of Porsches, nice timing. Emerald Lake and lodge are stunning. If you have time to enjoy it leisurely we recommend it as a destination to visit. The evening’s Ho-Down themed dinner had me struggling into cowboy boots. A couple heart attacks and legmuscle pulls later the boots were on and I was ready

I
‘m finally going to wrap up the 5 step auto detailing process. In this issue I’m going to cover the fifth step, maintenance. But just like every issue before, it’s time for a quick review of the mantra for keeping your car’s exterior in shape. Clean – Washing the exterior removes “above the surface” contamination. That’s the stuff that isn’t bonded to the paint. We covered this in a previous issue. Decontaminate – Decontamination removes bonded and embedded contaminants from the paint. This leaves a nice smooth surface for maximum gloss. We covered this previously. Polish – Polishing removes scratches, swirls and other damage to your paint. We covered this previously. Protect – The paint is now in great shape and we need to apply some protection. We covered this previously. Maintain – Once we have our car cleaned and protected, it’s far easier to maintain that state of cleanliness than it is to let the condition degrade, such that you have to go through the entire process again. The reason there is a fifth step in this process is that maintaining a clean car is easier than letting the car get nasty and having to start from the beginning. But I want to be honest with you about what I mean by “easier”. Washing a car that was put through steps 1 through 4 and then driven a few times or maybe driven for a few weeks really is easier. But the process isn’t much faster. The fact of the matter is that even if there is just a little brake dust on the wheels you still need to get the tools out and wash the wheels. Even if there’s only a little road grime on the back of your car, you still need to wash the whole car. The difference is, when you’re done washing a car that was properly prepped before it got dirty, you’re done. You PORSCHER — OCTOBER 2018
really are done. There’s nothing else to do. The car is ready to rock for the next club event. Now the only questions that remain are how you will wash the car and how often. Let start with a chat about the “how” part.
By Bill Elwell
Traditional automatic car wash – Really? You want to put your Porsche through an automatic car wash? The short story is that an automatic car wash will leave long fine scratches oriented from the front to the back of your car. There are lots of places that advertise that they are “brushless” or “soft cloth”. It really doesn’t mean much. If the guy in the car in front of you left a bunch of grit on the “soft cloth” brushes, they will scratch your paint. Even the dirt on your own car will scratch your paint. I attended a detailing class a few weeks ago. We used the instructor’s rental car as a class demo car. It was a black Mazda with less than 10,000 miles on it. After it was properly washed, the poor car looked like it had stripes across the hood, roof, and trunk. The stripes were from the scratches from all the car washes it has been put through between rentals. Touchless automatic car wash – You would think this makes more sense. Touchless washes use a combination of high pressure spray and chemical action to clean cars. How could touchless be bad? OK, the fact is that to remove all of the dirt and grime on a car, you have to physically touch the car with your cleaning instruments. With that said, there are combinations of chemicals that can come pretty darn close to doing a good touchless car wash. In fact, Griot’s just launched a product line designed to do a touchless wash when used with a pressure washer. But for our conversation we’re talking about commercial touchless washes. Many (but not all) commercial touchless car washes use a two-step wash process that starts with a mild solution of hydrofluoric acid. This is folPage 29
lowed up by a high alkaline chemical to neutralize the acid and then a rinse. It really is as bad as it sounds. Don’t take my word for it. Google the phrase “hydrofluoric acid car wash” and see for yourself. The safety of this process depends on the wash operator maintaining the correct mix of chemicals, as temperatures and other conditions change. Operated properly, a car wash like this will clean your car and strip off any wax or other paint protection you have. Operated improperly, it will damage your paint, plastic, and/or metal trim. Like I said, not all touchless washes uses hydrofluoric acid. But the problem is that you don’t know what chemicals are used in a particular touchless wash unless you know the owner.
takes about the same amount of time as a bucket wash. It’s just a different technique. Setup and cleanup is easier because there are fewer tools involved. Traditional bucket wash – I don’t think there’s much I need to say about the traditional bucket wash with soap and water. You can refer to my step 1 article for that information.
Now let’s talk about how often to wash your car. If we’re talking about a car stored inside then we really only care about the number of miles driven between washings. I wash my garage queens after every drive/ club event or maybe every other event if the drives are short. t’s that time of year! We are holding our annual autocross on Sunday, October 14 at Western Speedway, Langford. Tyson, our Competition Chair, and Conrad, our former Competition Director will lay out a challenging course in order for us to improve our driving skills.
More information about the autocross, or how to register, is coming soon.
Part of this event is the Chili Challenge Cook Off, which takes place at lunchtime. We will have some of our repeat chefs and hopefully some brave new chefs to take on the challenge and compete for the coveted trophy. We will be serving several kinds of chili, with buns and drinks. Minimum suggested donation is $10. The goal is to feed our competitors and spectators, all the while raising money for charity. This year, it is the Island Kids Cancer Association, which provides much needed practical support for children with cancer and their families on our Island. If you would like to participate as a chef, or have any questions, please contact Michael (secretary@virpca.org).
If you would like to support the charity further, the Annual Jam for the Kids is held at the Belfry Theatre on Friday, October 19. Tickets are available from the theatre and if you would like more information about the event, please contact Michael. (Continued from page 30)

f you are a member of our new Facebook group, you may have noticed a post by April Gale-Seixeiro (thanks) who shared a link to the Nanaimo Bulletin regarding the planning of a new Porsche dealership at 4900 Island Hwy there. I asked the Porsche Centre Victoria General Manager Volker Grady to explain what is happening, he said:-
“Not surprising that the Nanaimo Newspaper jumped the gun because it is indeed an exciting prospect. They are ahead of themselves because at this point in time we are only at the rezoning stage with the City of Nanaimo. Once that is achieved the planning for the building(s) starts and that includes an application with the respective manufacturer, in this case Porsche Canada.
The latter is never a guarantee until all criteria is met and agreements are solidified, which takes upwards of a year until we can confirm all this with confidence. Again, “if” approved, we are contemplating a service centre to start with that will cater to our up Island Porsche owners and will be joined at the hip to our Porsche Centre Victoria. All sales aspects will continue to originate in Victoria. Realistically we anticipate an announcement by 20202021. If and when that happens we will ensure that you and the Vancouver Island Region – Porsche Club of America will learn about this from us first”. We shall certainly pass on to our club members any exciting news on this matter that we hear about, so watch this space!
