elcome to a very special edition of Porscher. It contains your meeting package for the 2018 Annual General Meeting and it also contains our Constitution and Bylaws document which was revised and approved by the members last year.

The 2018 AGM will take place at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit on Sunday November 4 at 11am. Arrive at 10:30 for coffee and car talk. Please take a moment to read the Directors’ and Chairs’ brief annual reports in this issue and review the list of candidates for election to the 2019 Board. Nominations from the floor are accepted. In addition to terrific door prizes (including a 20 minute session on the track in a VIMC Cayman with professional instruction), there will be a great buffet lunch for a reasonable price (optional and subsidized by the Club), a slide show with highlights of the 2018 season and the company of Porsche Club members from up and down the Island. After lunch you will have an opportunity to drive some parade laps on the track in your car. If you have not registered, please do so here http://msreg.com/2018AGM so we can get the lunch numbers correct. Copies of this Porscher will be available at the AGM. Our new quorum requirement is 30 members so it is very important for the smooth running of the club that you attend. At this point we do not have 30 registered and we do not use proxy voting. If you have questions about the meeting, email Michael Holan secretary@virpca.org or me. See you on November 4th

t the AGM again this year, you will have the opportunity to win a free year’s subscription to one of the best (if not THE best) magazines for Porsches on the market today—000 Magazine. In exchange for the adverts, the publishers provide us with a number of subscriptions to give away, a great deal for the Club I am sure you’ll agree as each would cost you normally US$250 per year!

I have been working with Volker Grady of Porsche Centre Victoria and Scott Kerr of Coachwerks to enable members to have a sneak peak inside their Classic Restoration Centre in Victoria. The date is November 29th and as it is limited to 50 people, you must register via http://msreg.com/2018coachwerks. If it is over subscribed, Volker said we could possibly hold it again next year. Thanks guys!

n a sunny day in October, a new Chili Challenge winner was announced. First time ‘Chili Chef’, Geoffrey Melnychuk, beat out the seasoned Chefs Brad Blaney, Tim Evans, John McGurran and myself. I thought, with us living on this granola consuming Island, I would have the winning combination by making a vegetarian lentil Chili, however, I didn’t count on the auto-crossers being such carnivores. At least I have a year to come up with a new strategy. Our twotime former winner and reigning champion, Dean Aikenhead, presented the trophy. Geoffrey was going to enter his Porsche in the autocross, but his last minute decision to bring his Volvo, resulted in him chalking up another win - the quickest time by a station wagon. Congratulations. The different kinds of Chili were quickly devoured during the lunch break and as the afternoon autocross session started, the times started dropping compared to the morning. Experts will point out that this is due to many factors, including the track and tire temperatures going up. My theory discounts all that and instead proposes that it is strictly due to the amount of Chili consumed! On a serious note, I would like to thank all the participants, volunteers, spectators and ‘chefs’ for making the Chili Challenge such a worthwhile part of the autocross. With your help and generous support, we raised close to $700 for the Island Kids Cancer Association. www.ikca.ca

Geoffrey’s winning chili recipe is printed in this issue.

kay, I have to admit I was winging it instead of following a recipe, so I've written down everything I can remember. It is worth noting that all measurements are approximate and can be adjusted to your taste, this recipe is written so as to reproduce what I did, as faithfully as I can remember, but I encourage you to play with it and make it your own. For example, if it was intended for personal consumption and not to please a crowd, I'd have made it a fair bit hotter, as my preferences run quite spicy. If yours do too, start experimenting by using more jalapenos and anaheims. Ingredients 1.5kg beef outside round 500g pork shoulder approximately 100g of side bacon 500g refried black beans (cooked weight) chiles: 2 poblano, 5 anaheims, 3 jalapenos other aromatic vegetables: 2 onions, a rib of celery spices: garlic, cumin, mustard, Spanish paprika, chipotle, bay, oregano, parsley cider or malt vinegar, approx. 200ml tomato juice, approx. 500ml

(Fond, from the same Latin root as 'foundation', is the residue left on the pot from searing things. It is full of complex flavour chemicals, and the acid in the vinegar helps liberate it from the pot so you can enjoy all that tastiness in your food) Dice the bacon and put it in the pot to render some fat out. While it's rendering, dice the celery and onion, salt it, and sautĂŠ it in the bacon fat. Add several cloves of garlic, either diced or crushed, and a handful of cumin seeds. Once your kitchen smells strongly of garlic and cumin, deglaze again, but leave the liquid in the pot. Add the browned meat, and enough tomato juice to almost cover the meat. Let that simmer for a bit so it comes back up to temperature.

hat do you get when you combine a Sunday in mid October, 46 members in 28 cars, a mostly deserted road winding its way through the southwest region of our island, with some great top-down weather?

Porsches started rolling into our weekly Cars & Coffee location in Eagle Creek Village, just like on any other Sunday. However, they would not stay parked for long. Just long enough for a quick chat and to meet our newest member Monika. Although we started our drive under sunny skies, we encountered some fog on the Malahat. I’m sure it was just to remind us not to take the sun for granted, even on this fabulous day. Nine members joined us in Duncan and shortly we were heading west past the VIMC and towards Lake Cowichan. The quiet road leading from there soon experienced the unique engine sounds of the various Porsches, along with a quiet electric whine of a Tesla. Just in time for lunch, we crossed the bridge to Port Renfrew and soon parked by the Renfrew Pub. I must give thanks to Felicia and the staff for making sure our tasty food arrived quickly. After a stroll to the dock for a group photo, we were ready to head off home, most of us taking the coastal route. Back to that question. I think all participants would agree that a thoroughly enjoyable drive was the result.

ctober 17th 2018 was the 50th anniversary of the production date of our 1969 Porsche 912. It is all-original and has been 100% reliable for our 28 years of ownership. It has been a frequent Concours winner in Western Canada and was a 2nd place winner in the 2009 Porsche Parade, in Colorado. (Being bettered only by a lower mileage model found parked the Historic Display - ouch!)

Driving it continues to generate smiles so, "Happy Birthday to you , happy etc."

He also thanked Dean Aikenhead for hosting the Salt Spring tour and the tech night this year. Treasurer’s Report – Tim Evans Financial report was distributed by email to members for review. PORSCHER — NOVEMBER 2018

Page 24

Michael reported on the Port Renfrew drive and asked for suggestions from the membership to either maintain, or change the date for the drive. Michael noted that Dan Bourlet reported on the Black Rock event at the last monthly Board meeting. Survey sent out showed that there was a satisfaction of 8.7 out of 10 with the event. Dan would like to thank Dean and Ann Aikenhead for organizing two dinners as auction items and this raised $3500 for the “Cops for Cancer”. Dan will be stepping down as a chair after the 2018 event. If there is anyone interested in taking over the chair position, or helping out, they should let the board know. Membership Director’s Report - John McGurran John reported that when he took over from Imogen at 2016 AGM we had 269 primary members and 165 affiliates. According to the November 1 report from PCA, we have increased primary members by 13% to 305 and affiliates by 16% to 192 for a total of 497. He is sure that when the next December 1 Membership Report arrives we will have our 500th member. By the way, growth at the PCA national level in the same period was 4% increase in primaries and 5% increase in affiliates. Suffice to say we are growing much more quickly that PCA overall. Over the past year he produced monthly written reports on membership growth for the Board and the newsletter and communicated personally with all new members and any whose membership had lapsed. He drew attention to members’ anniversaries including some pretty big numbers - 40th for Dave Moyes, 25th for Wyman & Sandy Lee and Al Kyle, as well as 20 years for Brad Blaney. In September he organized the New Member Social which attracted 72 members and guests including half of our 2016 new members. We had violinists, great food and weather and people. As a member of the VIRPCA Board, he took on responsibilities in addition to Membership. Brad Blaney and he reviewed the Constitution & Bylaws and prepared a revised document for discussion at the AGM. He is drafting a Directors’ Manual with proper job descriptions, resolutions passed by the Board, event planning guidelines and other information to help bring new Directors up to speed. We do not have an orientation for new Directors and should have one. It would be nice to start that with a brief history of the club if someone would like to write it. He brought several resolutions to the Board, all with the intent to strengthen our structure and ways of doing business: 1) giving meeting planning responsibility to the Secretary and Regional Directors; 2) ensuring that the Board meets in a quiet room with adequate privacy and, ideally, good food; 3) adopting Roberts Rules of Order; 4) authorizing only the president (who may delegate authority) and the membership director to communicate directly with club members; and 5) authorizing the president, the membership chair, the secretary and database directors to receive monthly PCA membership reports – this is done to protect privacy. Membership Director is a great job and “I have enjoyed doing it”. Competition Director’s Report – Conrad Peden Conrad reported that there were two autocrosses held this year, one at Black Rock and one in Victoria. He noted that he was looking through the old Porscher newsletters and noticed that he was listed as a competition director in 1996. He has been in that position for 21 years. It is time to step aside. He will help out in the future, but will no longer be on the Board. Website Director’s Report - Dave Nickel Dave was not able to attend the meeting. Wendy read out his report: PORSCHER — NOVEMBER 2018

“VIRPCA has renewed it's domain registration and secured the rights to our web address for 5 years. Two years in and we now have all the access passwords for the web site from the previous web masters. All the sites plug-ins and code levels are now current and being maintained on a regular basis. Motion - I would like approval to restore a past tradition; the displaying members and their cars on the web site. This page will provide "Pride of Place" for owners and their cars allowing other members to put faces and names to cars cementing recognition and relationship. Details will be forthcoming upon approval and the submissions will be moderated by the Web Master to assure content is appropriate. As I have not spearheaded the club event(s) registration move from the web site to MotorsportReg a motion will be needed to officially adopt this change.” Discussion followed with Garth Webber Atkins expressing concern over privacy with members information. Moved by Karl Hoener, seconded by John McGurran to display members and their cars on the website, but only if members are able to individually opt in. 1 against carried John noted that a move to MotorsportReg does not need to be voted on. Newsletter Director’s Report - Steve Fairbrother Steve reported he created 8 issues this calendar year (would have been 9, but his house move prevented that). Issues are available from www.issuu.com and our website, PDFs can be downloaded from both. Articles have been quite varied from DIY maintenance and enhancements, detailing, club events coverage, product reviews, and the regulars of Directors’ comments, events calendar and recently classifieds. Advertising revenue has increased to over $10,000 for both calendar and fiscal year. President’s Annual Report 2018 First, I want to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of your elected Directors and Chairs that has made 2018 another great year to belong to the PCA Vancouver Island Region. Please take a moment to read their annual reports in the November Porscher and speak to them at the AGM. A more fulsome report on 2018 will be published in a future Porscher.

In February I sent you an invitation to complete a Membership Survey. An outstanding 50% responded listing their preferences and priorities. From January through October we engaged more than 900 VIR members and guests in PCA events and activities – and that excludes our weekly cars & coffee gatherings.

With respect to charitable giving, at Black Rock our members donated more than $20,000 to Cops for Cancer, $7,000 to the Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade. At the October Autocross and Chili Challenge $700 was raised for the Island Kids Cancer Association.

My primary job as president has been communication with members. The PCA manual said that this constitutes about 75% of the president’s job; they are right on that score.

No one has said that my biweekly email updates are too frequent; to the contrary it is rare that I do not get an email response from members with a comment or question. Every month you should receive two emails from me and from Steve Fairbrother a link to our excellent Porscher newsletter. We hope you open them and read them. If you are not getting them, talk to me.

My mission has been and will continue to be the promotion of Porsche driving events and engaging members to take part. In February we held an open meeting for members on competition and driver education. That gave rise to our first TSD (time speed distance rally). We offer autocrosses at Black Rock and with the Fall Chili Challenge. In 2019 we will connect with other clubs to provide more driving options. We had a very successful track day at the VIMC in August and will repeat that in 2019. We offer performance driver education at Black Rock and also through Tyson’s “On Ramp” series. Driving events are fun, safe and personally rewarding. Please join in the fun in 2019 if you have not before.

2019 will be my second and final year as your president. It has been a privilege to work on your behalf. Please do not hesitate to tell me how we can improve the club and member experience.

Vice President’s Annual Report 2018 2018 has been a fairly exciting year of events and I look forward to seeing what our members and the Executive can cook up for next year. For my part I helped to organize and run the Valentines day lunch again in February. Which I'm happy to say has a healthy following these days. Also put together a two day Olympic Rally tour that was co-hosted by our neighbors in the Olympic Peninsula Region of Zone 6 Porsche Club of America. We had a great time and look forward to hosting them here in the Vancouver Island Region soon. I tried to repeat our winter movie night at Porsche Center Victoria but unfortunately there was a scheduling conflict. I'm still looking for another venue to host it before the year is out, so stay tuned. Lastly, we launched the Vancouver Island Region PCA online store in the "From The Regions" area of their site. We're still finalizing some of the clothing and logo options before we make our official announcement to all members. I'd like to send out a big thanks to Garth and Imogen for their help getting the store ready! I'd also like to send thanks out all members of the 2018 Executive who worked hard together to make this year’s events spectacular.

James Renfrew VIR PCA Vice President

Treasurer’s Annual Report 2018 I’m happy to say that the club is in a stable and healthy financial position. We started off the year with $25,150.42 in the bank and at our year end on August 31, 2018 we have a bank balance of $27.878.52. Even though some of the events are subsidized by the club, revenue from the Porscher advertising remains strong and our quarterly rebates from PCA are in US Dollars so we get a big advantage due to the exchange rate. Because of our good financial position, we were able to subsidize the AGM to keep the members costs down. The Revenue and Expense report for the fiscal year is attached. More details on specific expense accounts will be available at the AGM.

Social Media Chair’s Annual Report 2018 One of the ways we try to keep members informed of what is happening within the club is to use Facebook. This year we decided to try and get more members involved in participating in Facebook so we switched from a closed Facebook page to a public group page. Although we had a large group of followers on the regular page we looked at what other regions were doing and it was very apparent that almost all had moved to the group page option. The group page allows members to join the group and then they can post their Porsche related information and experiences to the page for the other members to enjoy. So far, the response from member has been good but we hope more members will join and participate in the conversation. Check out the Facebook page at https://m.facebook.com/groups/150348012491522 and click the join button and get started. If you want more information or have any questions, please email me at treasurer@virpca.org.

Secretary’s Annual Report 2018 It is hard to believe that I have now held the position of Club Secretary for 3 years. It has been interesting to be involved in chronicling the meetings and seeing the Club evolve. Although I regularly attend our monthly meetings, I have only been able to attend two of the Club’s many events this year organized by the other members. Will have to make time for more next year. It has been my pleasure to arrange the Chili Challenge that was part of our annual autocross at Western Speedway this October. I believe the ‘chefs’ involved in preparing the food, outdid themselves this year and we crowned a new champion. Big thanks to all present for raising almost $700 for the Island Kids Cancer Association. This year I decided to move our annual Port Renfrew Drive to mid October. I think most present would have agreed that the fall colours and the sunny weather resulted in a perfect combination of driving pleasure. Can’t wait to see what the next year will bring.

Michael Holan VIR PCA Secretary

Membership Annual Report 2018 Vancouver Island Region has experienced a year of strong growth for membership. The net growth of the club was 45 members, though the actual number of new members this year was 84, consisting of 58 primary members, and 26 co-members. In November 2017, we reached a significant milestone of 500 members, and now sit at 542. A number of initiatives were undertaken over the course of the year to raise awareness of, and interest in the club, to continue to attract new members, and to retain current ones. President John McGurran and I worked with Porsche Centre Victoria (PCV) to craft a letter that PCV will provide to all of their customers, outlining the benefits of PCA membership, and offering a one year membership courtesy of PCV. Vancouver Island Region set up a booth at the GAIN Motor Gathering in August, and provided visitors with membership brochures, information about PCA Juniors, and complementary copies of Panorama magazine. Copies of Panorama magazine were placed with a downtown repair shop and provided to potential new members. In September, the New Member Social was held to welcome members who joined over the past year. Seventy-three members attended, including 26 new members. At this event, a special draw was held to promote the PCA Juniors program. A new VIR lapel pin was created and made available for sale to members. All new members were provided with a VIR name badge, and a decal for their car. Many business cards were handed out to people in Porsches, or who expressed interest in Porsches. It has been an enjoyable first year in the position for me. There was a fair amount to learn, but I had the benefit of guidance from an experienced and knowledgeable board, including past membership directors.

Up Island Director’s Annual Report 2018 I have been the Up Island Director since 2014, on the suggestion of Brad Blaney, Vice President. Thanks very much Brad. Started Comox Valley Cars & Coffee, April 15, 2015 & have attended each month, except October 13, 2018 due to Gary's health situation. I like to encourage primary members, who are usually a male, to add their spouse as family. A number of wives have mentioned to me, that being a family member, receiving a PCA membership card and a VIR name badge, makes them feel more a part of their spouses, love of their Porsches. Organized Porsches Helping Pets, as part of the C.V. C&C, 2016 & 2017, to receive donations of clean / gently used towels & linens, and auctioned off Porsche goodies to raise a monetary donation for the SCPA.

In December 2017, I hosted, at our home, a “Toast to Christmas” as part of the Dec. C.V. Cars & Coffee. We exchanged Secret Santa gifts, which everyone seemed to enjoy. I received a wine related gift, which for those that know me, could not be more appropriate. Thank You, Santa! February 2018, C.V. C&C, included at tour of the Old House Hotel & Spa, lunch at Locals Restaurant, draw prizes for 1 night, for 2 people, a $50. gift certificate for O’Spa, a bottle of wine, and everyone received chocolate hearts. Organized overnight stays May 2017 & 2018 at Tsa Kwa Luten Oceanside Resort, Quadra Island which also included the C.V. C&C, a drive, lunch, wine tasting, and dinner. Members from all over the Island participated. I took part in the 70 Years of Porsche, this June, our team of 3 Porsches, included Paul Atterton, Bev White, and Klaus Kreye, and we won the Scavenger Hunt Rally and each received a gift certificate for 1/2 day at the VIMC. I was one of the many PCA members, who volunteered to drive in the David Foster Foundation Simply Spectacular event in July 30 – Aug. 2, 2018. I was thrilled to drive an Alfa Romeo at the Villa Eyrie and received a “High Five” from David, when I met him at the Resort. I managed to attend about half of our monthly Board Meetings, which are usually held in Victoria or Duncan. Living in Courtenay, can make it a bit of a stretch. I feel very privileged to serve as your Up Island Director for 4 years, thank you all and especially those members who have joined Gary and I on these above adventures. Gary’s health requires my full attention now, but I still hope to be able to enjoy future events, and comrade of VIR PCA members

Mid-Island Director’s Annual Report 2018 I’ll start with the end of 2017 events. I finished the year off with a drive around Saltspring Island just after Thanksgiving 2017, with the final stop at the farmers’ market and lunch at Auntie Pesto’s. This year started off with planning two events for the club. First was participating on the Black Rock committee - planning the annual event in Ucluelet and the second was arranging for a full day at the VIMC track. Thankfully Dan was there to keep us focused on Black Rock by task-mastering us through monthly meetings to help us stay on track. He gave me the easy stuff - I put together some food for the two BBQ lunches at the airport, one pancake breakfast and the Big Beach BBQ. Thank you to the Ucluelet firefighters for all the hard work and making sure the meals had the manpower to serve the attendees guests over the weekend. After the bulk of Black Rock was done, I turned my attention to organizing 36 cars for the track-day at VIMC on July 19. Trying to organize the drivers was challenging but everybody was very patient with me and very politely let me herd them. All the questions, planning, emails and details ended up with a day that I think the participants enjoyed - from the driving and lunch to having a photographer on-site marking the day with picturesque mementos. I am considering doing this again in the coming year for those who are interested. Thank you to Paul Rossmo and his staff at VIMC for helping the day flow. The following week I took another group of people on a glorious midweek drive and lunch up-island through the backroads from Cobble Hill to Coombs. We passed artists’ studios, roadside farm markets and numerous pubs & coffee shops. A couple of highlights were the cinnamon buns at the Old Town Bakery in Ladysmith and a Paesano lunch at Cuckoo’s@coombs market on the patio. In September, Ann and I participated in PCA’s Treffen Banff and took a couple of days to drive some interesting roads on our way to Banff, met up with a group of island members who also made the rainy/snowy drive out and spent the four days socializing and taking daily guided drives. Early Sunday morning was a planned a route back through the bottom of the province with a couple of other cars along more scenic routes and roads less travelled. We finished off with dinner in Kelowna at Bouchon’s. If you have the opportunity to attend a PCA Treffen I would highly recommend you consider it. Lastly, the Cops for Cancer fundraiser dinner, polished off my year of events for the club in September. Thanks to all of you for your support this past year, trusting me to organize and lead some events, it has been my pleasure. I am looking forward to planning some special days in the coming year. And, thanks to Ann for supporting me, keeping me focussed, being patient with me during all these events, and for editing my reports/run-on-sentences.

Competition and Driver Education Chair Annual Report 2018 My name is Tyson Johnson and I've been a massive automotive enthusiast for as long as I can remember. For nearly a decade, I've made Porsche my career, working with the Victoria dealership. That role has given me access to Porsche factory drivers and some of North America's greatest racetracks. On the other side of the Atlantic, I've experienced Porsche GT cars at the Leipzig proving grounds, around the Nürburgring and at nearly 300 km/hr down the Autobahn. The motorsports professionals I've received instruction from over the years always practiced and preached solid fundamentals. I felt compelled to pass along what I'd learned, to our club members. For 2018 I prepared a 3 part 'On-Ramp' which paired classroom discussions with onroad and Autocross segments. We covered the basics of body conditioning and the importance of a strong seating position. We then discussed vision, (taken literally and figuratively) physics and car-setup. I spent some time coaching the driving line at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit during the Porsche Club track-day. More recently, I helped organize the October Autocross and Chili Challenge. If smiling faces were any indication, the attendees in 2018 had an amazing time. Hopefully they learned a thing or two along the way. I'm happy to stay on as Competition and Driver Education Chair moving forward into 2019. We're already planning a re-vamped On-Ramp 2.0 with additional autocross and circuit events.

Tyson Johnson VIR PCA Competition and Driver Education Chair

Rally Chair Annual Report 2018 On Sunday the 4th of February a “competition meeting” was held in Victoria. Various types of motorsport ideas were discussed and my presentation on the possibilities of a Time Speed Distance (TSD) Rally found support. The club decided to proceed with the idea and pretty soon we started the framework for the event and organising the details. Somewhere along the line I was co-opted onto the committee in the position of Rally Chair. One could argue that only one event was organised, but in order for it to happen a significant amount of work and meetings took place behind the scenes. A total of 3 pre-event schools were presented, each with dedicated power-point and course material. Knowing how daunting a first-time entry into such an event can be for participants, the “rally schools” were set up to give everyone a head-start to make the event meaningful and enjoyable right from the start. Judging from the competitor feedback, the event was a resounding success. Judging from the close scoring, the competitors certainly applied themselves. As part of the wrap up of the event a questionnaire is being circulated to obtain more feedback on what worked, what needs improvement and any ideas for 2019. At this stage I am confident what we will have sufficient support to set up another TSD rally next year.
