sure sign of spring is several VIR members gearing up for a PCA Treffen. Treffen roughly translates as “a meeting” of Porsche enthusiasts in some of the most spectacular locations in North America. Treffen Santa Barbara (Touring the American Riviera) runs April 3—6 and explores California’s central coast. I hope we get some photos and stories from our members as they wend their way south. Treffens are unique PCA events, well worth looking into:https://treffen.pca.org/index.cfm? event=main.showcontent&page=1 Mark Prusynski and his team have put together a very helpful website for the Zone 6 Grand Tour with all the information you will need, including a registration link. Several Island members have registered for the 3,000+ km drive. Many more will join for the day the tour is on the island: Sunday June 23. We also need some volunteer members/cars help shepherd the tour from the Black Ball Ferry Terminal to the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit. Here’s the link http://zone6-new.pca.org/regiongrandtour.html It is a very impressive route and a great touring opportunity. If you can find time to take part in any or all of it, please do so. Cars and Coffee has been a staple of VIR membership for many years. Every Sunday in the mid and south Island (and once a month in the north) members

gather for caffeine fuelled car talk. To add a bit of adventure and an opportunity to put a few springtime miles (kms) on your Porsche, we are offering an additional Cars and Coffee location on Sunday April 7 only. This is in addition to – does not replace - the usual Starbucks and NoXcuses gatherings. If it proves popular, we will offer more Sunday alternatives throughout the summer. Are you up for a change? Then join us on Sunday April 7 9:30—11:00 at Drumroaster Coffee located at 24-1400 Cowichan Bay Road in Cobble Hill, just off the Trans Canada Highway. This is in the Valley View Shopping Centre. Your GPS will show you the way. There is still room to join Imogen’s Spring Fling Tour on Sunday April 28. Here’s a link for information and registration: http://msreg.com/2019-Fling Looking ahead, information is now available on the website for Dan Bourlet’s Springtime West Coast Drive, a two-night and three-day drive to the west coast of the island on May 31— June 2. http://virpca.org/virevent/ springtime-west-coast-drive/

Our June 23 Track Day at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit is now sold out. For those of you who would like more, our friends at the Victoria Corvette Club have invited us to join their track day on Saturday August 17. Unlike our event, they time their laps as in an autocross, so you can monitor your improvement (hopefully) lap after lap and there are no cones to deal with. In accord with VIMC requirements, a tech inspection will be required. While the final price is still being worked out, they will ask for a 50% deposit by May 31 and the balance before July 12. If you are interested and would like to be on the list, email Cal Oleksuk sailorcal1@gmail.com at your earliest convenience.

here is always a Cars & Coffee meeting near you at weekends! Pop in, meet old friends and make plenty of new ones. You never know, VIR may even pay for your coffee occasionally too! Below are some photos from recent meetings, please feel free to send in yours, especially from Mid Island and North Island! Pictures by Wyman Lee for the South Island coffee.
North Island 2nd Saturdays, 10am—Noon, Crown Isle Plaza, 444 Lerwick Rd, Courtenay Mid Island Sundays 10am, NoXcuses Café, #1-464 Island Highway East, Parksville South Island Sundays 9am, Eagle Creek Village, 29 Helmcken Rd Paul Atterton, our North Island Director sent this picture and says:-
On March 9, 2018 6 men drove their sparkling clean Porsches in cabriolet mode braving snow and road salt to our North Island monthly Cars and Coffee meeting. Our venue was the parking lot adjacent to Starbucks in Crown Isle Plaza and the weather was still around freezing. Luckily one half of the parking lot was in the sun, with the southern half from where the picture was taken, still frozen with ice patches. After a short coffee stop, some of us regrouped at the Waverley Hotel (est. 1888), Cumberland for a warm lunch. Future Cars and Coffee will continue to meet at 10am on the second Saturday of each month adjacent to Starbucks, Crown Isle Plaza, Courtenay. Subject to weather conditions, we may regroup for lunch at another to be determined location.

here is always something good going on at the Porsche Centre Victoria Garage Sale. This year the great deal there (among others) were the tire sets which were selling for $100 FOR A SET OF FOUR INCLUDING TAXES AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL FEE. My summer Hankooks are due to be replaced this year anyway, so I grabbed a set of Michelin Sport 3 for my Macan. Attendees soon were enjoying the hot dogs from the BBQ and everyone in the Parts and Service departments were pretty busy keeping up with a small line-up of people paying for their deals! If you missed the event this year, make sure you leave some space in your diary next year!

Tyson Johnson held his first On-Ramp session of 2019 at Porsche Centre Victoria on March 21st. The sessions help to get Club members ready for the year’s club driving events . Tyson says:The intent of this first session was for our members to consider the mind, body and soul before their next drive. Whether it be on the street or the track. Through the mind portion, we considered how mental state can affect your performance behind the wheel. We discussed weather, road conditions and hazards of all types.
Through the body portion, we focused on seating position and vision. Through the soul portion we discussed the soul of one’s Porsche and what to consider before taking your car for a spirited run or for a lapping session at the track. We spent a lot of time discussing car setup, maintenance and track-focused upgrades that can be made to your Porsche. A majority of the time was spent on tire education. On Ramp Part 2 will take place later this Spring and will include a street-drive. The sign-up will be via MSR as usual and the link will be provided in Porscher, the web site and/or John’s emails.

A little while ago, the club received a package in the mail containing two complementary copies of the book “Little Anton” parts one and two, from retired pro -acer and now author, John W. Warner IV. Read his very entertaining letter bellow to learn more. Dear Garth Allow me to introduce my humble-bumble self. I’m an old, flabby, retired pro racer with a bad back full of titanium and a lick of writing talent. After being laid up from spine operations in 2008, I set about to research and write the great American historical novel, entitled “Little Anton”, on the life and times of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. In this endeavor, I think I have succeeded. Well, mostly that is… actually , now that I think upon it, I really did take a decent crack at it. Part One my wife nicknamed “the brick”, and the thinner Part Two “the stick.” Don’t fear, for it is a dramatic satire that captures the drama and zeitgeist of 1930’s Germany and her Grand Prix racing program that featured Auto Union and Mercedes at war with one another. Exciting, irreverent, naughty, bawdy, tearful, and satirical, it won’t disappoint! Okay, I hope not anyway. I take no profit whatsoever in the sale of this work, as it is my gift to humanity and Porsche enthusiasts the world over. Any and all profits will go to charity. My life-changing experiences in a Porsche 911 GT3R in the Grand Am, SCCA Pro and ALMS was all the payment I ever needed; the strongly-built car saved my life. No uberenthusiast has been more deeply affected by the good Doctor, his family, the brilliant cars, the racing and factory support, and the company that bears his name. I truly feel I know him intimately and owe him mightily after ten years at work on this epic-scale book. You can find additional copies for sale at Lulu.com Happy fast motoring! Best regards and salutations,
John
A perusal of the first few chapters suggests that this will be an interesting, informative and entertaining read.

On Sunday Feb 24, after cars and coffee, 10 club members arrived at Blast It!’s location on Turner St, Victoria for a unique experience (for me anyway). Owner Scott Tucker let us in and offered us coffee and doughnuts while in our hands we all had a small metal item that we were going to clean using his equipment. There was an array of pieces from hand tools to valve covers and rims.
If you want a quicker job than you can do (but do try it first), Scott can do the work for you - he IS a lot quicker and so may cost less overall. After we finished there, we all went to the nearby Moon Under Water brew pub for a great lunch and a chat.
Thanks to Garth Webber Atkins for organising the event and Scott for hosting us on a Sunday! Garth preScott displayed samples of what the blasting can sented Scott with a Porsche paperweight and a Panoachieve and he had left the pieces with half in original rama magazine. condition and the other halves were post blasting. Read Scott’s own article a few pages down and the There are 3 blasting mediums available:- sand, glass advert for location and details. bead and crushed walnut shells—each have their use and vary the degree of cleaning and finish. There are Steve Fairbrother six cabinets in the shop with extensions available to Editor blast items up to 8 feet in length. Scott mentioned that the media is filtered/recycled but in order to do that, items must be free of grease and oil, so there is a Degreaser machine available which works like a large dishwasher. So we all got down to blasting our items, some cabinets had certain media loaded, so we took our time and watched as others blasted away. I was amazed that the results were achieved so quickly and with little effort too —not to mention fun! No great physical strength is needed to use the Blast-It! machines either. To keep items looking good afterwards and provide some protection, Scott recommends and sells the Gibbs brand of penetrating oil, great for coating items. Blasting can also remove old paint off wood, much better than using chemical treatments and a lot faster. By choosing the correct medium (Scott will advise you), blasting can remove paint etc from antique metalwork (hinges, door knockers etc) without damaging the item. His charges are very reasonable and he said he will provide a discount to club members, just show your valid PCA card. PORSCHER — APRIL 2019

We asked Scott Tucker, the owner of Blast It, to pro- sandblasting facility where anyone who has somevide a brief history of any Porsche exposure and his thing to restore, may come and use a sandblasting business. cabinet. Sandblasting is a form of surface preparation As far as Porsche connections go, I have yet to own or drive one, but I have a couple stories from back in my younger years. I was about 15-16, about 2000 and I had always loved classic cars, I got my passion from my father and his stories of drag racing back in the 60's and 70's. I had yet to get my first car but I knew of one that was sitting, collecting dust. It was a badly dilapidated, white and yellow Porsche 914 that was parked under my friend's apartment building on Queen's Street, half filled with junk and newspapers and four flat tires. It never moved once for as long as I knew it. The Targa roof section was never installed, so as you might imagine it was very easy for a young idiot to unlock and sit down in! I remember just being enthralled with how it felt, even sitting still. And though I never knew who it belonged to, it always sticks out in my mind as one of the first classics I imagined myself driving!
employed at some stage by most of the vehicle restoration world, the broader antique restoration field and also the creative art field. Using an abrasive media propelled at high velocity, paint, corrosion and dirt can be quickly and easily stripped away, leaving the original substrate material clean in preparation for a new coating. There are 3 main abrasives we use regularly at Blast It— Sand, Glass Beads and Crushed Walnut Shells. They all have their own times at which they are used and we tailor to the needs of every project separately so that we use the correct media to attain the customer's desired result. We have 4 main cabinets for use. Each has a door that's 32" x 32" and we can blast parts up to 8 feet long.
We also offer a Parts Washing Service to strip grease and oil off suspension and engine parts.
