hanks very much to those of you who responded to the draft strategic plan which I sent by email on July 16. Reminder – please read this brief report and send your comments to Garth Weber Atkins membership@virpca.org by the end of July. I’ll send you another copy if you need one.

Finally, Saturday August 31 is our Financial Year End. Why do I mention this? In my July column, I reported that we need a candidate for Treasurer on the 2020 Board. As of today, we still need that individual, a key member of the leadership team and we also require candidates for a Secretary. All Club members-in-good-standing are eligible to be elected to our Board or serve as a Chair. With 351 primary and 216 affiliate members on the books, surely among that number we can find the volunteers we need to help plan and manage the Club operations for the next year.

Most months, our event calendar is full of things to do that are arranged by VIRPCA members. This August, as shown in the Around the Bend section (page 39), there are events sponsored by our automotive and car Club friends which we are welcome to take part in. I hope all the volunteer positions are in place well beOn Sunday August 11, we are invited to an Autocross fore the October 6 Annual General Meeting. s regular readers know, every year since I have been Editor, we have submitted 2 selected Porscher issues, an issue cover and a best article to PCA for their National Newsletter Awards. Every year I receive the Judges’ comments which, for the most part, I disagreed with as it seems there was some sort of unwritten PCA style that they were judging against which I was unaware of. Anyway, I thought my style suited the newsletter and I have received favourable feedback from Club members and carried on regardless! So, imagine my surprise when this year, John advised us that Porscher had won 2018 Best Newsletter for our size group! The award should be on show at the August 10th Comox Valley Cars & Coffee hopefully and I am thrilled to be a winner this year.

Another VIR Club member profile — Scott Mihalchan. Thanks to Garth for organizing and Scott for providing his story. If you have an interesting background to Porsches or joining the Club please let me know — Editor. I have been a PCA member for 20 years so have been approached by the Executive to comment on how, why and the Porsche road so far…

My first car was a 1999 Boxster purchased through Speedway Motors in Victoria. I knew little of the lineage beyond her appearance so haphazardly pulled the bumperettes off the rear Scott & Leah and bolted on a bike rack of sorts to accommodate my wheelchair. Immediately the intimate connection between driver and machine was established with mobility limitations forgotten. The freedom was intoxicating. At this stage of my young life, I was working as a securities trader in downtown Victoria and had recently started courting a woman in Vancouver. The masculine athleticism and virility represented by my Porsche would surely be the game changer. After meticulous planning, I picked the blonde beauty up at the Swartz Bay ferry terminal and whisked her, rather skillfully I might add, over the Malahat where she gently put her hand on mine, locked eyes and said, “Is that necessary?”. The statement reined in my inflated mechanical ego, had us married within a year and we have been Vancouver Island PCA members ever since. Our interaction with the club started with the occasional Car Show, coffee and weekend event but quickly focused on the eclectic group of individuals that shared not only a passion for these vehicles but a zest for living. Numerous memories, some cringe worthy, come to mind from our group assaults on Black Rock Resort in Ucluelet. Truly admirable how a rag-tag group can rally together to raise funds for the local fire department and Cops for Cancer. The weekends are notorious for the undulation between uproarious laughter to tears for the kids fighting cancer back to smiles and cheers when donation goals are exceeded. The efforts of the volunteers and lifelong memories can not be understated. As for the small aspect of this club that involves wheels, I have evolved from said Boxster to 911 to Cayman S to current Boxster S. Each had its pros and cons with the evolving challenge being the practical accommodation of the wheelchair. The first Boxster had, as stated, an ugly rattling bike rack with mismatched bungie cords. The 911 demanded an overly complex, contoured, pivoting monstrosity that required partial chair disassembly. The Cayman initially, but falsely, suggested the chair could be broken down into its sharply raked PORSCHER — AUGUST 2019

hatch (my miscalculation). Fortunately, trial and error has resulted in the simple secure system used on the current Boxster so is the favourite car‌ to date. As I sit here and try to think of one quintessential moment that combines the beauty and engineering of the car with the camaraderie and acceptance in the VIR PCA, it would have to be the never imagined privilege of running the track at Vancouver Island Motorsports and trying to coordinate limited muscle function in a dance with centrifugal forces, gravity, momentum and gargling RPMs ...

Awesome. Thanks PCA

John Novotnak of PCA informed VIR Club member Tony Booth (profiled recently in the June issue) that his 'all original' 1969 912 had been chosen as 'The Porsche of the Week' in the next 'e-Brake Newsletter' to be published on July 30th. The photo of the car then competes with three other winners for the "Porsche of the Month" title. The monthly competition is based on which car gets the most emailed votes during August, after publication. Tony says that voting can be done on line by Members, family and friends and is repeatable after each 24 hours too, throughout the month! This is a fun topic in the Nanaimo/Parksville coffee gatherings especially as Gary Glover's car won the title several months ago. Congratulations to Gary too! Tony is soliciting support from the Club members to help win this title for a vintage VIR Porsche during the month of August—so please go off and vote (often!). The link should be contained at the end of the PCA E-Brake email this week.. Good luck Tony!

At the 2019 PCA Parade held in Boca Raton Florida, the following awards were made:VIR members Mark & Shawn Titterton came 3rd in their Rally class (trophy below). VIR got an Honourable Mention in the Public Service Award category for our 2018 charity related work with our Black Rock event , the Chili Cook-Off/Autocross and the David Foster Foundation event that some VIR members drove. VIR came 1st in the Class III group for Best Newsletter (Trophy shown right). The June and December 2018 issues were submitted for judging.

The last few Porsche Club driving events have been resounding successes. A number of members have asked if we could add an another driving event before the Chili Cook-Off. We reached out to Karl Rhynas of the Victoria Motor Sport Club, (VMSC). The VMSC runs a number of Autocross and Driver training events throughout the year. They are a great source of knowledge and offer tremendous value when it comes to getting your car on track. Those who attended the Autocross Clinic at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit last year would have met Karl. He drove his red Honda CRX which is consistently one of the quickest cars at any VMSC event. He's offered Porsche club a package for August 11th. We'll receive preferred booking, We'd typically have to wait until all VMSC members have registered and we'd only have access to remaining spots. Potentially showing up and being unable to participate. We'll receive the VMSC rate of $40 in lieu of $60 per driver. We'll also have access to the deep pool of knowledge from their members. Karl has said he and his colleagues will be available for 'ride-alongs' and coaching throughout the day. I absolutely love Autocross as it rewards good fundamentals and teaches you how your car will react as it weight transfers and you push towards/through the limits of traction. I'd love to be there but will be out of town that weekend. I look forward to seeing how your skills have improved when we're on track again for the Chili Cook Off.

Tyson Johnson Competition & Driver Education Chair

Note: To register for this event, visit VMSC’s MSR page at www.motorsportreg.com/orgs/victoria-motorsports-club. However, the event was not listed at time of creating this issue. Karl says they put up the event page about 10 days before the event, so hopefully it will be there soon after you receive this issue.—Editor

Porscher thanks Zone 6 Representative Mark Prusynski who provided the article and photographs Day 1 Saturday, June 22—Pacific Northwest and Olympic Peninsula Regions If the 2015 Zone 6 Grand Tour was a 4,700-mile marathon, this year’s 2,300-mile tour of Zone 6 will only be a half marathon. We started on a quiet Saturday morning at Griot’s Garage in Tacoma. They were kind enough to open early for coffee, donuts, and the usual drivers’ meeting. Of course, we all had time to browse the store and buy products to keep the Porsches pretty. Greg Halverson, the National Tour Chair and member of Pacific Northwest Region, led our tour through the area south of Seattle. We were somewhere near Mount Rainier, but the clouds hid the views. That’s not unusual for the area. We ended the morning with a wonderful lunch provided by Porsche of Tacoma at the dealership, a fantastic showplace for Porsche’s finest. The Olympic Peninsula Region took over and led us out of the city along the Eastern edge of the Olympic National Forest and all the rivers, lakes, and inlets. We ended the day in Port Angeles with a dinner near our hotel, which was next to the dock where our ferry will carry us across to Vancouver Island early tomorrow morning. I hope the foghorns don’t go on all night. Two Regions, 37 Porsches, 67 people, 351 miles. Only a couple thousand to go. Day 2 Sunday, June 23—Vancouver Island Region There was already a long line when we arrived at 7 am for an 8:15 departure of the Coho Ferry to Victoria. With 20 or so Porsches in the parking lot we had a nice show and opportunity to take pictures and talk to PCA members. The Vancouver Island Region met us with signs pointing to a staging area and we were soon off north toward Nanaimo. Victoria has a stoplight about every block and they give preference to bikes and pedestrians, so a green light lasted about long enough for two Porsches to get through. Al Kyle thoughtfully provided instructions, translated into miles. I, however, had used the time waiting for the ferry to change the Boxster Getting ready for Parade laps at over to kilometers. We managed by actually Vancouver Island MotorSport Circuit. looking for road signs. What a concept! We divided and regrouped several times and were soon at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit, where we had a nice lunch and three parade laps around the circuit. Most of us opted for the scenic route over the quick route to Nanaimo and we experienced some beautiful back roads. Our P-cars were led for several miles by a P-truck that seemed to be following the same route. It was a delivery truck full of “Preserves and Pickles” that finally turned off to deliver the goods. Three Regions, Pacific Northwest, Olympic Peninsula, and Vancouver Island. 47 Porsches and 80 people on 100-mile segment (Not counting the parade laps or ferry ride.) 451 miles total. PORSCHER — AUGUST 2019

Day 3 Monday, June 24, 2019—Canada West Region

We started early with 30 Porsches on the ferry to the mainland and another 13 joined us north of Vancouver. The Sea to Sky highway going up through Whistler is just spectacular. We stopped for lunch at a golf course with snow-capped peaks jutting straight up. We had occasional clouds and sprinkles, but some of the hardy cabriolet drivers kept the tops down without getting too wet. Linda noticed a young black bear standing by the side of the road. He waited for Colin in his black 911 to pass and then decided to sprint across right in front of Corby’s Cayman. Corby’s new brakes passed the test, barely missing the bear. Or, should it be “bearly”? Great twisties all 260 miles on the way to Merritt and we’ll get to sleep in a little tomorrow. Life is good. Four Regions, Pacific Northwest, Olympic Peninsula, Vancouver Island, and Canada West. 710 miles.

Day 3, On the ferry back to the mainland.

Day 4 Tuesday, June 25, 2019—British Columbia Interior Region We took a short ride from Merritt to brunch at the Two Eagles Golf Course in Kelowna, overlooking Okanagan Lake and the mountains beyond. BC Interior Region met us with hats and judging slips for a show and not so much shine. People were asked to vote for their favorite car without regard to how dirty it was. Fortunately for me, the winner had to be present. The owner of a blue Targa wasn’t present, so my Amaranth Red Boxster took the top prize and a graphite blue metallic Cayman S took second. It was nice to see that people appreciate the more unusual colors. After brunch we drove nearly 300 miles in about six hours over mountain passes with heavy forests, beautiful lakes, and rivers, with an occasional backdrop of snow-capped peaks. The Needles Ferry only holds about 30 cars and leaves every 30 minutes. We arrived with a few minutes to spare in front of a semi that we had all passed on the way.

Day 3, Lunch at Whistler, BC. PORSCHER — AUGUST 2019

They squeezed him on right behind me and he didn’t even come close to my back bumper. The five-minute ride across wasn’t enough rest Page 19

from the long drive with hardly a straight stretch. My arms will be sore tomorrow. Fortunately, it will be a fairly relaxing day. Five Regions, Pacific Northwest, Olympic Peninsula, Vancouver Island, Canada West, and British Columbia Interior. 1,030 miles—almost half way. Day 5, Wednesday, June 26—Inland Northwest Region We got to sleep in today and started with a leisurely drive down to the border crossing at Nelway. Those of us at the back of the line thought one of our group at the front was in trouble, causing a long delay. It turned out we followed two school buses full of kids, who each had to be processed. When we started going through, it was obvious that the guards were aware that Porsches had front trunks, until Al Kyle’s 944 pulled up. They made him pop the hood. Then when a Panamera pulled up they were even more confused. They never figured out that the Caymans and Boxsters have two trunks. We sailed through.

Day 5, Back to the US (Two school buses full of kids right behind the building). INWR met us at the first pull out and took us on a route that wound in and out of Idaho. Linda and I were getting close to home. We stayed in the Spokane Valley and ate a fantastic dinner with several Region visitors. Despite the short drive, I was ready for an early bedtime. Six Regions, Pacific Northwest, Olympic Peninsula, Vancouver Island, Canada West, British Columbia Interior, and Inland Northwest. 170 miles today for a total of 1,200. Day 6, Thursday, June 27 I was looking forward to meeting our Silver Sage Region pals in Orofino, but first headed back over to Northern Idaho on some roads that were familiar to Spokane Parade attendees. We had a planned stop in MosPORSCHER — AUGUST 2019

cow, but it was delayed somewhat by road construction. The coffee almost kicked in too soon. Several of us walked briskly from the cars to the restroom. Our oldest daughter attended University of Idaho in Moscow and the trip brought back some good memories. Above: Spiral Highway. Speaking of memories, I will never forget the first trip our family made to the West in our 1964 Pontiac Catalina. Seven people in one car with no seatbelts. We went up this crazy road on the edge of Idaho that curved back on itself over and over. Turns out it’s still there and it’s called the Spiral Highway. Our group wound down it and then headed along the river on Highway 12 to Orofino for a box lunch with the Silver Sage group. They picked us up and over Whitebird Pass. We could see lush greenery for miles and Linda said she thought our state was awfully pretty, too. We had a great evening dinner at Shore Lodge on the edge of Payette Lake and one person at each table won a Porsche paperweight courtesy of Porsche of Boise. I took home a Boxster! We ended with a rousing Happy Birthday song for Sue Hagner. Seven Regions, Pacific Northwest, Olympic Peninsula, Vancouver Island, Canada West, British Columbia Interior, Inland Northwest and Silver Sage. 202 miles today for a total of 1,402. Day 7, Friday, June 28, 2019 Our longest drive started off early and poorly, with chipseal for miles. We were stopped a couple of times for road construction and had to putt along through loose gravel. No serious rock chips were reported and when we finally got out of it we made good time across Oregon to John Day for lunch with the High Desert Region. They led us through some picturesque canyons and along dark blue reservoirs. I had trouble keeping up, although my passenger seat alarm never went off once. We had to pause to allow some cowboys, riding ATVs rather than horses, to herd cattle across the highway. It looked easier than herding cats, right Gary?

Day 7, Getting close to Baker, Oregon. We stopped in Bend, Oregon, and had a nice dinner in a member’s garage that was the envy of everyone there. Dinner was hosted by Porsche of Bend and it’s back to the hotel for the night. Tomorrow we cross over the Cascades and head to the Pacific Coast. PORSCHER — AUGUST 2019

Page 22

Eight Regions, Pacific Northwest, Olympic Peninsula, Vancouver Island, Canada West, British Columbia Interior, Inland Northwest, Silver Sage, and High Desert. 420 miles today for a total of 1,822. Day 8 ,Saturday June 29, 2019 Rick Ohlson is our tour guide for the Cascade Region. Even Rick’s superlative-laden description of the drive over McKenzie Pass could not accurately describe the beauty of our surroundings. A very narrow road took us up through a fire-scarred forest to Dee Wright Observatory in the midst of a huge lava flow. Snowcapped volcanic peaks were all around. Then the road down the west side was even more narrow and twisty. There was hardly room to stay in the right lane.

Day 8, Spectacular view from Dee Wright Observatory in McKenzie Pass. We overwhelmed a nice restaurant for lunch and headed back up to Highway 20 and over toward the coast. The forest is much denser on the west side than it was on the east side. At Newport, we headed north on Highway 101 through a couple of coastal tourist towns to Lincoln City. Dinner with Porsche friends at a restaurant overlooking the ocean, a walk on the beach, and a room with a view of the ocean ended a perfect day. Tomorrow is the last day of the Grand Tour. Nine Regions, Pacific Northwest, Olympic Peninsula, Vancouver Island, Canada West, British Columbia Interior, Inland Northwest, Silver Sage, High Desert, and Cascade. 267 miles today for a total of 2,089. Day 9, The Final Day, Sunday June 30, 2019 Joe Kelly from the Oregon Region led us today, using a tour prepared by Bill Munson. Joe runs an excellent tour and this one contained all the variety that the Northwest has to offer. The fabulous Oregon Coast was on our left until we turned inland through dense forests. There were a couple of times that I wanted to stop and take a picture of William Fong’s Signal Green GT3 passing through the bits of sunlight that filtered PORSCHER — AUGUST 2019

through the canopy. The ferns on both sides of the road matched the GT3. Of course we couldn’t stop, but the image remains etched in my memory.

This is the group that travelled at least eight of the nine days of the tour, left to right in above photo: Gordon (hiding) and Sylvia Mansfield, 2006 Seal Grey Metallic Boxster, Nanaimo, BC; Al Kyle, 1986 Zermatt Silver 944 Turbo (that turned over 250,000 miles on the last day), Victoria, BC; Janice and Gary Glover, 2006 Seal Grey Cayman S, Nanaimo, BC; Linda and Mark Prusynski, 2013 Amaranth Red Boxster, Boise, ID; Paul Atterton, 2001 Biarritz White Boxster S, Comox, BC; LaRoy and Kelly Gossen, Dark Blue Carrera, Newburg, OR; Joyce "Joyz" Lau and William Fong, 2016 Signal Green GT3, Bellevue, WA; Roxie Wilson, 1999 Zenith Blue Boxster, Bellevue, WA; Photographer not pictured, Perci Hala, 2014 Pure White Cayman S, Duncan, BC Lunch was at Camp 18, near Seaside, Oregon, a huge log restaurant with historical mementoes of the logging days. Good food was promptly served and we were back on the last leg. More forest, wine country, a couple of small towns, and we arrived at World of Speed in Wilsonville. We staged cars for pictures and had a short visit at the museum. We all said our thanks and good-byes there or at a nearby restaurant on the patio. It was great to be finished, but sad to see everyone head off in separate directions for home. What a fun group we have in Zone 6 and our tour was truly Grand. Ten Regions, Pacific Northwest, Olympic Peninsula, Vancouver Island, Canada West, British Columbia Interior, Inland Northwest, Silver Sage, High Desert, Cascade, and Oregon. 190 miles today for a total of 2,279 miles.

In March 2019, Edgar and Leona Brechert reached a milestone of 40 years as PCA members. Edgar shares his story with Porscher readers here. As I write this, it is my 78th birthday and a good time to reflect back on my life and my admiration of Porsche cars and Porsche in general. In 1940, my parents were relocated to western Poland by the government of the time, to look after and farm an existing 200 acre farm, on which my younger brother and I were born. In January 1945 my family and 9-13 million other people fled Stalin’s forces to escape west back to Germany, a journey that lasted six weeks. We were in East Germany for about a year and in 1946, when we were reunited with our father, we immediately headed to West Germany. Our family ended up in a small village called Uppen, about 6km from Hildeshiem, which is located about ½ hour SE of Hannover and 1 hr SW of Wolfsburg. In 1947 I noticed the beginnings of the VW bug, van and buses and then in 1952, I saw my first Porsche – a silver-grey coupe. I knew then that one day I would have a Porsche. In August 1954, at the age of 13, my family emigrated to Vernon, BC. Life in Canada was good. I finished

school in Vernon, then spent 5 years in Alberta. It was there, in 1967 that I bought my first Porsche – a 1959 356A normal coupe. In 1968, I returned to Vernon, where I joined the Canada West Region of PCA in 1979, then moved to Vancouver Island in 1981. Over the years, I have owned the following Porsches: 1966 912 Coupe 1969 912 Coupe 1969 912 Targa 1973 911E Targa 1975 911S Targa

Edgar’s present Porsche, a 1974 911 Targa At present, I own a 1974 911 Targa, which is 95% complete. I have not participated in many PCA events, but I have always enjoyed reading Panorama and the coffee sessions on Sundays with PCA members in Nanaimo. We visited the Porsche Museum on two trips to Germany, the most recent in 2017. I have signed up for two more years of PCA and intend to sign up for 3 more years after that, to make it 45 years with PCA in 2024!

AGM - Proposed

Oct 13

Details TBA

For full details please go to MSR web page msreg.com/2019-Fall-Rally. Starting point: White Spot Woodgrove/Nanaimo, 9am. End point: Cowichan Valley Best Western.

Save the date and plan to join in the fun of our second Time Speed Distance (TSD) Rally of 2019 on Sunday 29 September, following a mid-island course. This is a team event where each car has a driver and a navigator. It will be a family friendly event on paved public roadways operating at/below posted speed limits. This is the third of what was seen as a very enjoyable event last fall and is suitable for both two and four door Porsches. Our objective is to have fun and we have very experienced rally drivers/instructors to show us the way. The rally will start in Nanaimo and the end will be near Duncan. There will be a number of short legs (regularity stages) allowing time to chat between and learn from our instructors led by rally enthusiast/ expert Klaus Kreye (below). If you have any questions, or need help getting set up, please contact Klaus: rally@virpca.org After the rally we will meet for lunch. The rally cost is $40 per car. Drivers and navigators will purchase their lunch after the rally.
