lubs like ours remain viable as long as individual members volunteer their time, interest and expertise for the benefit of all. A ‘healthy club’ engages many members in tasks large and small. An ‘unhealthy’ club relies on the same old familiar faces and in fact encourages them - to continue doing their great work organizing drives, track and social events. Okay ‘health’/’unhealthy’ may not the best description but you know what I mean.

Rather than repeat my ask for candidates for Club Treasurer and for Membership Chair (which we still need, by the way), I ask just this. If you are prepared to volunteer any time during the 2020 year, please drop a note to membership director Garth Webber Atkins at membership@virpca.org She will keep a list and when we have a need, reach out first to those members for assistance. Drop her a note and tell her what kind of time you have available and where your interests lie.

The Vancouver Island Porsche Club membership is growing — 564 at last count. Our volunteer pool is insufficient to sustain the current level of activity and to add new and different events as per your responses to last year’s member survey.

The Vancouver Island Porsche Club’s volunteer pool of fewer than 20 is insufficient to sustain the current level of activity and to add new and different events as per your responses to last year’s member survey.

The next time you overhear a member saying there are not enough driving events or movie nights or tech sessions or track days or social events or free coffee sessions, etc., remind them that the solution lies in members taking initiative and getting involved. Toward that end, we are putting together a resource manual that serves as a step-by-step guide in event organizing. In addition, we have about a dozen master organizers – members who have a lot of expertise and are willing to share it.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the New Member Social on Sunday September 15. New members (joining since September 2018) are guests of the club and your lunch is paid for; others pay $28. The last couple of years have been sellouts so don’t delay; register here :msreg.com/2019-New-Member

t has been a busy couple of months for me personally. We recently bought a new Macan S in the Porsche Victoria 2018 model sale. Weighing up the choices of going with a 2019 Macan, Macan S or a higher spec'd 2018 Macan S wasn’t easy. The base Macan is really peppy if you keep it in Sport mode (try it if you have not yet) but in the end, the 2018 S won out and I am a happy owner—especially with PDLS, Apple Carplay, SiriusXM, 5 spoke wheels AND the colour is NOT black!

Our first (longish) trip was up to Courtenay, to pick up the Best Newsletter award at the North Island Cars & Coffee morning and then go on to John Clark’s home to see his great collection of Porsche pieces, see some great cars and try his quiz out (which I did know a couple of answers to). The day was super, fine weather, nice drive and of course great company. Lots of pictures and information on the events are in this issue, hope you enjoy it! And as usual, if you see a white Macan with PDLS lights, give us a wave!

My name is John Clark and I have been a PCA (Canada West Region) member since 1978. My interest in cars began when I was a small child playing with Dinky cars. By my early teens I began reading Hot Rod, Car Craft, Car & Driver and percolated up the chain until I discovered Road & Track and ultimately came across Britain’s Motor Sport. These were influential reads. I frequently visited Washington State’s Arlington drag strip. I often attended their yearly drag strip reunions. My first car was a 1956 Monarch Richelieu convertible and I also enjoyed owning 1962 VW convertible.

After taking a hiatus in the 1960’s when I drove around in a 1956 Chevy Zoë & John wagon and 1954 Jeep pick-up truck, both hand-painted in the style of the day, I bought my first Porsche (strangely enough) from my own childhood doctor. He was selling his perfect 1962 356B coupe in order to “… buy his daughter a Ford Pinto for UBC”. I polished, waxed and detailed that car every day. During the mid-1970’s I really caught the Porsche racing bug and attended Vancouver’s Westwood racing circuit whenever I could. Particularly memorable was the 1977 Trans Am race there. I was able to see Toronto’s Ludwig Heimrath and Florida’s “perfect” Peter Gregg driving his immaculate Brumos liveried car. Both were 934 Porsches but with the Brumos car sporting modified bodywork that eventually saw it stripped of the Trans Am championship by the FIA. Heimrath was victorious. These Porsche 934’s soon morphed into the all conquering 935. In my opinion these cars were the pinnacle of Porsche Motorsports. To see these cars in action today requires a trip to the Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca raceway. I have attended the last 3 events and I plan to be at the next Reunion in 3 years’ time. In the 1980’s and 1990’s I had the privileges of a credentialed media-press photographer, which allowed me access to the Molson Indy Vancouver, the German Grand-Prix and the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. These opportunities have left lasting impressions and giv1967 Porsche 912 en me a library of great photos! I have enjoyed every Porsche I have owned. These include 4 x 356’s, 2 x 912’s, a 1982 911 SC once owned by BC Lion Darnell Clash, 2 Caymans, 1 Boxster, a 993 twin turbo, a RUF modified 991, a 2008 911S, a custom built 1973 Carrera RS clone and my current car…. a hot rodded 1967 Porsche 912. Shortly, I hope to be the PORSCHER — SEPTEMBER 2019

owner of a 2018 Carrera 4S with a manual transmission!

I am particularly proud of my extensive and thorough collection of Porsche memorabilia. My wife thinks that I helped to keep Canada Post afloat as I wrote letters to Porsche in Germany and F1 teams every week-end during the 1980’s and 1990’s. I have detailed 1/18 scale models of almost every 935 constructed, books covering every aspect of Porsche racing history, factory posters, photographs, new Porsche model year brochures and a complete collection of Christophorus magazine. I subscribe to “Classic Porsche” magazine and highly recommend its high calibre of journalism. Of particular interest might be an autographed photo of Ferry Porsche and a factory poster celebrating Dan Gurney’s Belgian GP victory that Dan signed for me. I take photos and paint as a hobby and in recent years I have been painting themes from the car racing world. Today the highlight of monthly reading is Octane, 000 and Motorsport.

“It’s not just the cars…..it’s the people”. That is what I like about this club. Everyone is joined in a celebration of the Porsche marque. Most recently I have enjoyed local drives organized by our North Island co-ordinator. Porsches will always be part of my life. They are, in my opinion, the essence of automobile culture from design to engineering to anticipating the fast approaching environmental wave of technology for new vehicles.

I thought we would share John Clark’s Porsche quiz that he held at his recent Porsche-a-Palooza to those who were not there. The quiz will be split over several issues and the answers to each set of questions will be in the back pages of the SAME issue.

1. Magnus Walker is now recognized as an influential Porsche owner / collector and aficionado. What business enterprise enabled him to pursue his Porsche dreams? 2. Concensus has it that, who builds the most outstanding Porsche 356 “outlaws”? 3. Who was Peter Gregg’s regular driving partner?

So no cheating by Googling or Binging (is that a modern verb now too?) !

John Novotnak of PCA informed VIR Club member Tony Booth (profiled recently in the June issue) that his 'all original' 1969 912 had been chosen as 'The Porsche of the Week' in the next 'e-Brake Newsletter' to be published on July 30th. The photo of the car then competes with three other winners for the "Porsche of the Month" title. The monthly competition is based on which car gets the most emailed votes during August, after publication. Tony says that voting can be done on line by Members, family and friends and is repeatable after each 24 hours too, throughout the month! This is a fun topic in the Nanaimo/Parksville coffee gatherings especially as Gary Glover's car won the title several months ago. Congratulations to Gary too! Tony is soliciting support from the Club members to help win this title for a vintage VIR Porsche during the month of August—so please go off and vote (often!). The link is www.surveymonkey.com/r/July-2019-PotW. Good luck Tony! PORSCHER — SEPTEMBER 2019

here is always a Cars & Coffee meeting near you at weekends! Pop in, meet old friends and make plenty of new ones. You never know, VIR may even pay for your coffee occasionally too! Below are some photos from recent meetings, please feel free to send in yours, especially from Mid Island and North Island! Pictures by Wyman Lee for the South Island coffee.

North Island 2nd Sat. of month, 10am—Noon, Crown Isle Plaza, 444 Lerwick Rd, Courtenay Mid Island Sundays 10am, NoXcuses Café, #1-464 Island Hwy E, Parksville South Island Sundays 9am, Starbucks, Eagle Creek Village, 29 Helmcken Rd, Victoria North Island Director Paul Atterton reports about August 10:- Today was unlike any other Saturday’s Cars & Coffee, over 30 cars were present for today’s gathering which was held in the parking lot adjacent to Starbucks in the Crown Isle Plaza, Courtenay. With the VIRPCA Board offering free coffee to celebrate Steve Fairbrother’s win of the 2018 PCA’s Best Newsletter Award, it seemed only right that some fresh chocolate croissants were needed to spice up the occasion. VIRPCA Board Members from all over the Island joined the festivities. In addition to Tim Evans, Garth Webber Atkins, Dan Bourlet, Dave Nickel, and Wendy Woodley, John McGurran presented the PCA Best Newsletter award to Steve Fairbrother (see picture overleaf).

Today (August 10) was a double-header with Cars & Coffee in the morning, followed by Porsche-a-Palooza member social at John Clark and Zoë Levitsky’s (pictured right) residence in Comox. Over 30 members attended to see John Clark’s man cave as well as his Porsche memorabilia which he has been collecting for over 30 years. A couple of John’s friends dropped off their vintage 356’s to add to John’s display. Zoë took the initiative to create a small fund raiser for Prostate Cancer Research – with only 30 members present, $330 was raised and a few days later another member topped it up to $986, kudos to everyone who made a contribution. Lunch was served including savoury croissants, a fruit and vegetable tray, cheeses, meats and beverages. During lunch, John handed out his 25 question quiz on Porsches - which had a lot of the members stumped. It wouldn’t be fair to say publicly what the winning scores were, but everyone got the last question right, well almost everyone – the question being what year did you join PCA? – some had been members over 20 years but couldn’t remember exactly how many. Dave and Derek Nickel got the most answers right and won 1st place – they received a Porsche Memorabilia book to help them with the next quiz and a Porsche poster. 2 nd place was a tie between Tim Evans and Henning Wulff – both got Porsche dehydration bands - so the next time they take the quiz, they don’t have to sweat it. In wrapping up, thanks and gifts were presented to John and Zoë, John received probably the only Porsche book that he did not own – a Porsche sketch book with nothing but blank pages. If you weren’t aware, both John and Zoë were art teachers in high school and continue to draw and paint today. Tucked in the bottom of the gift bag was also something that John didn’t own – a pair of blue, black and white checker flag socks – something John has craved for the past year after seeing mine. The general consensus was that this was the highlight event of the year for North Island and should be an annual event. Thanks again to everyone that helped in the preparation John Clark, Zoë Levitsky, my wife Bev White and all the members that helped us raise $986 for Prostate Cancer.
