Our 2019-2021 Strategic Plan calls for the appointment (by the Board) of Chairs to oversee or lead a Club rally program, our website, a driver education/ competition series, member relations, our newsletter and to manage our Goodie Store...among other things. This is a move in the right direction. Reducing the elected Board to seven members and adding as many Chairs as the Club needs is a very positive step. The new Board will be looking for volunteers. These are appointed roles, not elected and do not require attendance at monthly meetings and other governance responsibilities.

It’s that time of year! The Chili Challenge will be held at lunch time during our Autocross on Sunday October 20th at Western Speedway. We will have some of our repeat chili chefs and hopefully some brave new chefs to take on the challenge and compete for the coveted trophy won last year by Geoff Melnychuk. We will be serving several kinds of chili, with buns and drinks. The goal is to feed our competitors and spectators, all the while raising money for charity. Once again, this year it is the Island Kids Cancer Association www.ikca.ca, which provides much needed practical support for children with cancer and their families on our Island. If you would like to participate as a chef, or have any questions, please contact Michael at secretary@virpca.org. Plus of course, the Autocross will be held all day there too! Tyson, our Competition Chair and friends will lay out a challenging course in order for us to improve our driving skills! More information & autocross registration is at msreg.com/2019autocross

Porsche finally revealed all of the new electric model, the Taycan in a simultaneous 3 country video unveiling in China, Germany and Canada (right next to the Niagara Falls). The shape has varied a little since its “Mission E” concept drawings were shown some years ago. There will be 2 models released initially, the Turbo and Turbo S. The term Turbo is used to indicate a higher performance level over those models without the Turbo insignia (even though they may have a physical turbocharged engine). The Turbo has 460kW (500kW in Overboost) and passes 100 km/h in 3.2s. The Turbo S has 460kW but with 560kW in Overboost and reaches 100 km/h in 2.8s, both have Launch Control. Both can charge from 5% to 80% with a fast charger (270kW) in 22.5 minutes or 93 minutes with a 50kW source. The price of the Taycan Turbo starts at Cdn $173,900 and $213,900 for the Turbo S model. On Wednesday August 14, we met at NoXcuses Motorsports Experience & Cafe and enjoyed a delicious BBQ dinner of beef, cheese or veggie burgers with plenty of coleslaw and potato salad as well as beverages. Many thanks to our BBQ chef and hosts Jordan and Cora Lea for their hard work. Our event was attended by 42 people and 25 vehicles. Plenty of parking, so we could enjoy viewing, many different Porsche models and a rainbow of colours to behold. It was a beautiful, sunny, top down kind of evening perfect for a drive after our BBQ dinner. With Gary Glover leading the pack, we toured for about an hour and a half through Parksville, Qualicum and Errington, too many back roads to remember. It was a great drive with everyone enjoying the scenic tour.

Here is the second set of Porsche questions from John Clark. The answers to these are on page 55 of this issue. 1.
Al Holbert (shown right with his 962 car) was a Porsche competitor. He raced at Le Mans and was active in the IMSA series. He was also PCNA’s Motorsport director. What happened to him?
2.
Why was almost every Porsche factory driver reluctant to drive the then new 917 Porsche flat out on the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans?
3.
Why did the FIA strip Peter Gregg’s glorious 1978 Porsche of its Trans Am championship?
Many thanks to John Clark.
Congratulations to Tony & Rosemary Booth, who won PCA’s Porsche of the Month for August with the photo below! Tony says …. Well that was a surprise win! Also, another win for VIR after Gary Glover's Cayman S "Porsche of the Month" for June. Thank you so much everyone in the Region who voted for our 912, those in Wild Rose and our Porsche friends world-wide. Who's going to start the fun again and make it 3 for VIR? Thanks again,

On September 15, 51 VIR members gathered at the Cowichan Golf and Country Club for the New Members’ Social. This lunch event is an opportunity for members who joined in the last year to meet other Club members, as guests of the Club. On arrival, members circulated with coffee in hand, greeting new members, connecting with others and viewing the display of photos of events over the past year. Thirteen new members attended this year’s event. Also present as guests of the Club were Edgar and Leona Brechert, who, as of March this year have been PCA members for 40 years. We learned at the lunch that they had also reached another very significant anniversary, as they married in 1979 and so had their 40thwedding anniversary this year. A hearty congratulations to Edgar and Leona on both counts! All members enjoyed a very tasty buffet, featuring roast beef and barbequed chicken, with fruit crumble or fruit shortcake for dessert. After lunch, Club President John McGurran presented the Enthusiast of the Year award to Gordon and Farah Halkett (above), who have participated in many VIR events over the course of the year. Samples of the VIR apparel now available through the PCA store were on hand for members to have a look at and guests were treated to a fashion show, in which several VIR members modelled the samples, or their

Thanks go to Rowland Atkins and Imogen Burr for handling guest check-in, Steve Fairbrother for selling lapel pins, taking photographs and organizing the 000 prize and to the Cowichan Golf and Country Club for a stylish room decoration, good food and good service. Thanks also go to the fashion show models Rowland Atkins, John McGurran, Kathy McGurran, Didier Moinier, Farah Halkett, Steve Fairbrother, Imogen Burr and Klaus Kreye. Great job, folks!

On Sunday Sept 8th, VIR held their first “Fill the Frunks” (front trunk of a Porsche to those new to Porsches) to raise donations for the Parksville Food Bank. The Event was held at NoXcuses Motorsports Experience & Café in Parksville in conjunction with the weekly Mid-Island Cars and Coffee meeting. Members were asked ahead of time to bring donations of non-perishable food items to donate and their coffee would be paid for by VIR. Two Frunks, in a Cayman and Boxster, were filled to capacity with donations. Some members forgot their donation and passed the hat around and an additional $80 was raised. The donations and cash where driven to the local food bank and handed over to grateful volunteers. The two other coffee meetings that VIR holds, once a month in Courtenay and every Sunday in Saanich, are now challenged to - Meet It or Beat It!

President’s Annual Report 2019 2018/2019 has been a very good year for our Club. In addition to continued growth in membership and an array of well-attended events and activities, we conducted a strategic planning exercise to guide Club priorities and activities through 2021. You will read more about this exercise in Garth Webber Atkins’ report; she brought her facilitation skills to the table and oversaw the process. The report will be available on the Club website. Among its recommendations are a review of Club communications, routinely collected post-event feedback from members and improved storage and access by members to Club documents. It should be noted that among all of the Regions in PCA’s Zone 6, Vancouver Island is the only one to have actually completed such a piece off work. The same can be said for the membership survey we completed in 2018. I firmly support the strategic plan’s proposal to reduce the number of elected directors to seven (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and North, Mid and South Island directors). Members with an interest in governance and oversight will be attracted to these Board positions. Members with a particular interest and skillset (competition, membership, newsletter, website, goodie store, among others) can focus their attention on the job to be done and not be involved with monthly meetings and other governance-related work. This model is rational, functional and opens the door for many more members becoming involved in the workings of the Club. We need that increased participation. Financially, the Club remains in a sound position, as described in Tim Evans’s Treasurer’s report. Communication with members continues to be a high priority for us and in addition to the president’s biweekly email and our award-wining Porsche newsletter, our Facebook group page is a growing source of Porsche-related news and events. A redesign of the website is proposed for 2020. The culture change to using MotorsportReg as a required registration for our events is almost complete. MSR makes the event organizer’s job much easier, helps to collect in advance payments for meals etc and generates data allowing the Board to review event participation. Believe it or not, our cars and coffee session have increased in popularity over the past year and in the mid island in particular with a new location in Parksville. On occasion the Club buys coffee for members at cars and coffee, without advance notice. Among the proudest moments for the Club in 2019 were the Honourable Mention we received from PCA National for our charitable work in 2018 and the award for Best Newsletter, given to editor Steve Fairbrother. While the Club has awarded its Enthusiast of the Year award since 1997 (for which members of the Board were deemed ineligible), there was no similar award for a member whose actions significantly improved the Club. To address this, the Board has endorsed the presentation of an annual President’s Award to a deserving member. The president is empowered to select the recipient and present the award at the Annual General Meeting. It has been a privilege to serve as your president for the past two years. Following the AGM I will step into the Past President role and support the new President and Board as needed. The job of president is demanding and time consuming at times. But the rewards of seeing happy faces of members on driving tours, socials, rallies, track days and at cars and coffee is ample reward.

Vice President’s Annual Report 2019 For my part in 2019 I held the annual Valentines Day event at Arbutus Golf Club. It was well attended again this year and I'll endeavor to organize it again next year. Also supported the Clubs efforts to establish a strategic plan and look forward to the results. Another successful year of driving tours and rally's were insured with no incidents to report. Still plan on hosting another movie night this winter, please watch for details to come. It been an honor serving the membership and the executive board over the years. Unfortunately I won't be continuing as Vice President into 2020 as I need to reprioritize at home.
James Renfrew VIR PCA Vice President
Treasurer’s Annual Report 2019 I’m happy to say that the Club is in a stable and healthy financial position. We started off the year with $33,378.91 in the bank and at our year end on August 31, 2019 we have a bank balance of $31,017.41. Even though some of the events are subsidized by the Club, revenue from the Porscher advertising remains strong and our quarterly rebates from PCA are in US Dollars so we get a big advantage due to the exchange rate. Our PCA revenue is down this year compared to 2018 as there was a special payment that year over and above the quarterly payments we receive. Because of our good financial position we are able to subsidize Club events ($9,040.44) including the AGM to keep the members’ costs down. The Revenue and Expense report for the fiscal year is attached. More details on specific expense accounts will be available at the AGM.
Social Media Chair’s Annual Report 2019 The group Facebook page we implemented in 2018 continue to grow with new members joining and the number of postings by members. The Facebook page is a chance to see what is happening in the Club along with members activities. Secretary’s Annual Report 2019 Hard to believe that I have now been the secretary of the Club for 4 years. It has been interesting to be involved in chronicling the meetings and seeing the Club evolve. I appreciate that I had a chance to be involved with a great bunch of people that really care about our Club. After a successful Chili Challenge last year at our annual autocross, where we raised almost $700 for the Island Kids Cancer Association, I am hoping for a repeat of good competition on and off the track. Last year the fall colours and the sunny weather resulted in a perfect combination for a great day out on our Port Renfrew Drive. I have my fingers crossed while organizing this year's drive for another chance for members to have an enjoyable outing. I would like to encourage members to contact the new board and see if they could use your help in organizing events in 2020.

Membership Director’s Annual Report 2019 We have experienced another year of strong inflow of new members. VIR received 88 new members, consisting of 37 new regular members, 28 new co-members, 17 regular members transferring in and 6 comembers transferring in. However, due to 53 non-renewals and 7 transfers out, this translates into a modest net growth of 28 members in all. At the end of August, VIR had 570 members consisting of 352 regular members and 218 co-members. I conducted a number of activities over the course of the year to raise awareness of the Club, to continue to attract new members and to retain current ones. To achieve this, I: Provided all new members with a VIR name badge and a decal for their car. Sent monthly welcome e-mails to new members Recognized milestone anniversaries in the Membership News section in Porscher. Contacted members who had significant anniversaries to encourage them to submit an article about themselves to Porscher. Worked with PCA National to address member issues as needed. Organized the Blast-It! tech session and lunch in February. Organized and hosted the New Member Social in September, to welcome members who joined over the past year. Fifty-two member registered, including 14 new members. At this event, a special draw was held to promote the PCA Juniors program. Set up a booth at the GAIN Show and Shine in August and provided visitors with membership brochures and complementary copies of Panorama magazine. Also provided coffee and baked goods for members. Placed copies of Panorama magazine with a couple of auto-related businesses, along with business cards and membership application forms. Sold VIR lapel pins throughout the year. Submitted four articles to Porscher.
All Board members engage with potential members as they meet them and place PCA business cards on the windshield of vehicles without a PCA decal. Other VIR initiatives I supported include facilitating the development of a strategic plan and selecting the women’s wear for the Vancouver Island Region PCA Store.

Mid-Island Director’s Annual Report 2019 I took over from Dean Aikenhead as Mid-Island Director in early Spring 2019. So this report will only reflect on events and activities for which I was responsible. Our first event was the Springtime West Coast Drive, on May 31—June 2. This 3 day 2 night event started in Ladysmith, through Cedar, Lantzville then stopped for coffee at NoXcuses Motorsports Experience and Cafe in Parksville and onto Port Alberni for lunch at Little Bavaria. After lunch we continued around Sproat Lake then to Ucluelet for two night stay at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort. Saturday we drove to Tofino for sightseeing and optional hike or walk around town. Saturday night we had a private dinner in the Wine Cellar at Black Rock resort. Sunday brunch was at Heartwood Kitchen in Ucluelet. With twenty eight VIR members and fifteen vehicles we all enjoyed a relaxing West Coast drive, with beautiful sunny skies, twisty roads and plenty of time to take in nature’s beauty. Our second event was the 2019 Burger Night at NoXcuses, in Parksville, on August 14. Our host were Cora Lea and Jordan at NoXcuses, home of our Mid-Island Cars and Coffee. Forty two members and twenty five vehicles attended. After our BBQ burger dinner, we went for a drive that took us through many of the back roads of Parksville, Qualicum and Errington. With beautiful blue skies it was a perfect night for a top down kind of drive. We ended back at NoXcuses with everyone saying good-bye, full of memories of another great VIR summer event. Planned Events; (after this report).
September 8th – Sunday; Coffee in Parksville. fund raising event for the Parksville Food Bank, . September 25th – Wednesday; Chili Night & Drive. Dinner and drive around Parksville, Qualicum and surrounding area. Other events that will be coming up throughout the fall, winter and spring will be more drives, movie nights and tech nights. Dean and I are still working on a drive for The Cancer Society, kids at Camp Good Times. We will need your support to pull this off. I would like to thank all the board members for their hard work for making VIR such a great chapter of PCA, also, many thanks to Garth Webber Atkins for her leadership on the Strategic Planning sessions for VIR’s positive future. Thanks to all of you for your support throughout the past year and the coming year, it has been a pleasure. I am looking forward to an exciting year.

South Island Director’s Annual Report 2019 In 2019 South Island has been busy all year. Sunday morning Cars and Coffee always very well attended, year round by members and non-members, with Porsches and non-Porsches. Through the year we had many Club events car shows, autocross, drives, rally and visits. This is my last year as South Island director. It has been a great experience to work with the Club board. Thank you all.

Rally Chair’s Annual Report 2019 Following the successful inaugural rally in September 2018 the stakes were doubled for 2019. The Club board planned for a Spring and Fall TSD Rally along the same format. Attendance increased slightly for the Spring Rally and everyone had a great time. We also had visitors from the USA and NZ participating! Scoring was very close and competitive. The classroom sessions and the experience gathered during the 2018 event certainly showed with each team getting into single digit scores at one or more checkpoints. Note that these events are held on a demerit scoring system, so the lower the score the better. A well-deserved win went to Team Gosse/Fraser with only 46 points. At the time of compiling this report preparations are well underway for the Fall Rally. The route is finalised & checked and entries are coming in. I would like to thank the members that supported these events, with continued support we can make this a regular event in the coming years and kick-start rallying on the island.

Goodie Storekeeper’s Annual Report 2019 I had been the North Island Director, since 2015 and in 2018 I stepped down due to family commitments, but did take on the task of the “Goodie Store & Porsche Swag”. The Goodie Store is stocked with items that we have purchased and offer for sale to our members. Such as T-shirts, Caps, License Plate Frames etc. The Goodie Store has a page in the monthly “Porscher”. “Porsche Swag” is given to us by Porsche Centre Victoria, who receive this swag a number of times a year directly from Porsche. These items are given as prizes to members, at our events and are available to all event organizers. I have a list that I can send to event organisers, to select items for their events. Paul Atterton, who has done an EXCELLENT job as North Island Director for the past year, has decided not to run this year, so I have put my name forward to run for that position. If you have any questions, please be in touch, Wendy Woodley, goodiestore@virpca.org 250-897-3678

For full details please go to MSR web page msreg.com/2019-Fall-Rally. Starting point: White Spot Woodgrove/Nanaimo, 9am. End point: Cowichan Valley Best Western. Save the date and plan to join in the fun of our second Time Speed Distance (TSD) Rally of 2019 on Sunday 29 September, following a mid-island course. This is a team event where each car has a driver and a navigator. It will be a family friendly event on paved public roadways operating at/below posted speed limits. This is the third of what was seen as a very enjoyable event last fall and is suitable for both two and four door Porsches. Our objective is to have fun and we have very experienced rally drivers/instructors to show us the way.
The rally will start in Nanaimo and the end will be near Duncan. There will be a number of short legs (regularity stages) allowing time to chat between and learn from our instructors led by rally enthusiast/ expert Klaus Kreye (below). If you have any questions, or need help getting set up, please contact Klaus: rally@virpca.org After the rally we will meet for lunch. The rally cost is $40 per car. Drivers and navigators will purchase their lunch after the rally.
