s the new President of the Vancouver Island Region Porsche Club of America, this is my first column in the Porscher and I look forward to using this column to connect our members to what’s happened in the club over the last month and/or to provide other club information.
The Annual General Meeting was held at the Villa Eyrie Resort on October 6th. The meeting was well-attended and the lunch at the resort following the meeting was sold out. A big thanks to those leaving the board for their support of the club: John McGurran (President); James Renfrew (Vice President); Michael Holan (Secretary); Didier Monier (South Island Director); and Paul Atterton (North Island Director). I’m happy we have a number of board members continuing to serve and take on new roles, as well as new members on the board. I’m very excited to be working with this new executive team. You can find a complete list of board members and activity chairs, including their bios, on the website here. Please note that we still have an opening for the membership chair position and we need a member to take this on and join our team. I guarantee that you will find it very interesting, not a lot of work, and a great way to meet members. Garth, the past membership chair and our current Vice President, would be happy to provide details about this position and what it involves. If you have any questions, please contact Garth. The executive team got down to business right away and held our first meeting on October 15th. If this meeting was any indication, we are in for a very exciting 2020 with lots of ongoing and new events planned for the PORSCHER — NOVEMBER 2019
year. Our goal is to make sure we have something for everyone. If you have an idea for an event of any kind, please reach out and let us know. We would love to hear from you! Unfortunately, due to nasty weather conditions, we had to cancel our annual Autocross and Chili Challenge event on October 20th. It was a difficult decision to make as a number of people had turned up to participate and several members had cooked up some very tasty chili for the competition. Western Speedway confirmed that if we entered the facility and then cancelled, our $1,260 fee wouldn’t be refunded. So, we decided that it was best to manage the club’s funds responsibly by not entering. It was a good call, because the weather didn’t improve and it wouldn’t have been an optimal experience for everyone involved. We held our last official driving event of the year, the Port Renfrew Loop, on October 27th. It was great to see so many members out exercising their Porsches on what turned out to be a perfect driving day. Hopefully throughout the fall and winter we get more days like that and we can continue to enjoy our cars. I’m having second thoughts about having put mine away already.

t the recent Port Renfrew Circle Run (article next month), a suggestion was made to me that the Club should hold more events such as the Port Renfrew one but hold them on a weekday. This has both pros & cons…. A) less people could attend (except the retired) but alternatively B) the venues would be less busy and therefore easier to book (if required) and also parking is less of an issue. So we may try this out…. If you have a good venue to suggest for a weekday lunch, please send it to me at newsletter@virpca.org. Thanks!

VIR members Steve & Faye Cropper spent 3 days at the Goodwood Revival in the UK and provided us with this report. Many thanks to them. Our second trip to the Revival; 2012 and now 2019, it’s bigger and better than ever. Three exhausting days of racing, shopping, dining, drinking and admiring many Porsches! In 2018, Porsche was celebrating 70 years at Goodwood, and the admiration continues. DAY ONE — Parked in the Members’ Lot and spent too much time admiring the unbelievable collection of owners’ cars, you have to see it to believe. I’m guessing there were 150+ Porsches scattered throughout from all over Europe. Forward parking of course. Once on the grounds, the March Enclosure offers breakfast, lunch and a bar service, along with members seating in the grandstand. The grounds offer acres of retail heaven for gear heads, notably Rennsport, Porsche, Aston Martin, Maserati, Range Rover, Ford etc. For the ladies, retro fashions including hair stylists to give a look from the 40’s or 50’s. The racing includes Motorcycles, 80 year old Bentleys and numerous classes and years of sedans, sports cars, GT and Formula cars all of which must have been racing in the period. Watching 429 Fords racing Minis, Porsches and Austins is very cool. The Fords kick butt until the brakes go away and the race is on! The small English sedans often win the brake & tire battle! These guys are trading paint, so serious racing, by experienced drivers. Dario Franchitti and others were here to race and enjoy the festivities. DAY TWO — Mini parade; 250 plus another 100+ in the parking lots! Twin engine models, limousines, pickups, etc. Next; the Paddocks, where a pass allows you to enter and approach all the race cars, and talk to the mechanics. The Airport, used during WW2, is full of Army, & Airforce personal in period dress and flights are offered. In 2012 we enjoyed Mustangs and Spitfires flying in formation with a Lancaster Bomber, one of only two left flying today. And of course, a full day of racing with Corvettes, Cobras, Porsche, Jaguars, Ferraris, GT 40’s, Lotus, Alfas. Some races are LeMans start, with two driver changes. The old Bentleys must lower their Convertible tops 1/2 way thru the race, great fun! The champagne is flowing and the ladies are shopping, roaming groups PORSCHER — NOVEMBER 2019
Page 10
of entertainers, (Beatles music flash mob, barbershop quartets, jazz and swing trios from the 40’s) round out the fun. Ancient London Cabs run you around to other features on the grounds, no charge! The Bonhams Auction is on, requiring a programme purchase of £30. DAY THREE — Fatigue is setting in, but we arrive early of course for more of the same great entertainment. Goodwood is a couples affair, the ladies have as much pleasure as the boys, especially with three champagne stops and more boutiques than you can count! A track crowd favourite is the antique Austin A40 peddle car race for age four plus charming to watch! Not sure of attendance numbers, but 40,000 a day? Period dress is a must, you have that gear in the back of your closet! Goodwood is a must event! Google away!
Cheers

On Wednesday September 25, we met at NoXcuses Motorsports Experience & Cafe and enjoyed a delicious Chili dinner and Veggie Chili with plenty of coleslaw and potato salad as well as beverages. Many thanks to our Chefs and hosts, Jordan and Cora Lea for their hard work. Our event was attended by 16 people and 9 vehicles. Plenty of parking was available at the Cafe, so we enjoyed viewing many different Porsche models and a rainbow of colours to be enjoyed. It was a nice evening, perfect for a drive following our Chili dinner. With Gary Glover leading the pack, we toured for about an hour through Parksville and Nanoose via many back roads. It was a great drive with everyone enjoying the scenic tour. The drive ended at the Petro Canada station in Nanoose with everyone saying goodbye, with their memories of another great VIR summer event.

Here is the third set of Porsche questions from John Clark. The answers to these are on page 39 of this issue. 1.
It is commonly agreed that the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is an iconic and historic Porsche model. What was the HP rating of that car?
2.
Which Porsche has often been called the “last old-school super sports car”?
3.
From 1986-1988 Porsche produced an innovative technical marvel in the 959. Engineer Helmuth Bott described the car as “......the most expensive advertising give away in Porsche history.” Why did he say that and (BONUS) how many 959s were produced?
Many thanks again to John Clark for the quiz questions. Here he is pictured with his latest acquisition, a 2018 C4S with a 7 speed manual transmission. John says it looks like he is trying to figure out how to start it!

Due to parade in Spokane in 2017 and Rennsport in Monterey in 2018, Canada West and Pacific Northwest Regions took a three-year hiatus before bringing back the 27th edition of Whistler Weekend on August 23 – 25, 2019. Marilyn and I attended the last Whistler Weekend in 2016 and as it was such a great event, we registered early and encouraged others to join us.
Marilyn Sing & Tim Evans
With no conflicting west coast events in 2019, this year was especially significant as it honoured Doug and Judy Colby, who started Whistler Weekend back in 1981. Sadly, Doug passed away in August 2018, so this year’s event was a tribute to the legacy he created.
Lots of great cars to view
The event started off on Friday evening with registration, which included a wonderful goodie bag courtesy of Porsche Vancouver, Griot’s Garage, and Porsche Bellingham. Then we joined the crowd for the Meet and Greet barbeque, where we met up with the other VIR attendees and members from other regions. This year, we had six other couples from VIR attend the event: David and Candice Keller (Qualicum); Bryce and Dianne Holtz (Qualicum); Phil Chiu and Susan Blackmore (Victoria); Al and Jaquie Sherwood (Victoria); Henning and Tanya Wulff (Courtenay) and Derek and Tiffany Haarsma (Victoria). By all accounts, everyone had a good time. PORSCHER — NOVEMBER 2019

Saturday was a concours and Show ‘n Shine day with the cars displayed in Blackcomb Village. With an amazing array of cars, picking the winners was a really tough job for the judges! For those who wanted to do something different, you could participate in the Walking Rally and you were given clue sheets for various spots around Blackcomb Village, where you had to answer a question. It was more challenging than Marilyn and I expected and with spending extra time admiring the cars before starting the rally, we had to pick up the pace to meet the deadline for submission. Later that afternoon, Marilyn and I hosted the VIR participants in our hotel suite with refreshments and appetizers. Saturday evening’s banquet was held at the Whistler Conference Centre with all the concours and Show ‘n Shine winners on display. The meal was excellent, the slideshow of past events and the tribute to Doug Colby was very entertaining and lots of fantastic draw prizes were awarded. David and Candice Keller were one of the big winners, as they came home with a certificate for a set of Pirelli tyres, compliments of Weissach in Vancouver! Marilyn and I managed to pull off a tie for the third-place finish in the Walking Rally.
Bryce Holtz & Dianne Martel enjoy happy hour!

latter, going to Lillooet with a stop at Fort Berens Winery for lunch with other VIR participants. Unfortunately, an accident involving a semi just outside of Pemberton caused some delays for the first two groups heading out to Lillooet, so the third group wisely decided to head out to Squamish instead. There was another banquet that evening with awards for the autocross event, but it wasn’t as well attended as the night before since some shortened the weekend by heading home early, while others chose to take advantage of the many fine Whistler restaurants for dinner instead. The weather was thankfully not as hot as Susan Blackmore & Phil Chiu previous August events, but it was still sunny and dry for the most part. From the feedback I’ve received, everyone had a good time. Hopefully, there will be more Whistler Weekends in the future and if there is, I know we will certainly go back again. If you haven’t been to one before, I highly recommend you try and fit it in to your Porsche schedule. David and Candice Keller

20 years... Wow, time flies! My first memory of a Samantha & Rick Silva Porsche was when I was a kid playing with a 911 and a 924 matchbox car, which I still have to this day. As a teenager, I had a poster of a slantnose turbo hanging on my wall. It was during my teenage years when I first read about the 959, which was an incredible technological machine at the time. I knew then, I had to have a Porsche! At 20 years old, I saw an opportunity to buy my first Porsche. I was driving a small Nissan truck at the time and wasn’t happy with the ride quality. I saw an ad for a 944 and I was able to negotiate a straight trade across for my truck. I was ecstatic to own my first sports car and it was a Porsche! I was eager to learn as much as possible about the car. I purchased a Haynes manual and did my own oil changes. I loved driving the 944! In one of my regular trips to the dealership for parts, I noticed an ad for PCA and was impressed that I could become a member for a minimal cost and receive a great magazine every month. I was living the life!
As my knowledge of cars increased, my true desire was a 911. While still in my 20’s, and working at a tech company, I had the opportunity to drive the company owner’s car, a 1978 911 SC (see above) that was in mint condition. The owner was selling and looking for something newer but it was not in my price range. It wasn’t meant to be on that occasion, but it motivated me to look for other 911s on the market. Within a few months I found a car better suited to my finances, a blue 1982 911 SC Targa. The car needed some work, but it was nothing I couldn’t handle and the price was right. I put on new tires with Turbo twist rims and a short shift kit. It looked amazing and drove well too. I was living in Edmonton at the time and attended all autocross events hosted by the Polar Region. Once a year, the club would rent Race City in Calgary for a “Driver Education” event. I learned a lot about car control and driving dynamics of the 911. I became more involved with the club and helped organize a number of events and soon filled a VP role. It was great to be a part of a club PORSCHER — NOVEMBER 2019
Page 25
with people that had the same interest in Porsches.
Shortly after my wife and were married, we headed off to Europe and Stuttgart, Germany was one of our stops. Prior to the trip, I met with the local Porsche dealership, Norden Autohaus, to assist us with setting up a factory tour. When we arrived at the factory, we met up with about 15 other Porschephiles mostly originating from the US. During the tour I remember being just a few feet away from a technician assembling a 911 engine in a spotless factory! The tour guide was exceptional and the whole experience was amazing, informative and a definite highlight of our trip.
After a few years, it was time for an upgrade which was a car with more horsepower and neutral handling. I found a silver 1986 944 Turbo (see above), it looked sleek and far more modern than my previous cars and it was FAST. Over time, I made minor modifications to increase horsepower while trying to improve my driving skills. I attended more autocross events and the yearly track day event as well. The turbo was exhilarating but the lag was irritating and a bit terrifying when the turbo would spool up mid-corner. You really had to think ahead and time your corner exit appropriately as the turbo spooled up. Over time, the turbo lag was making the car less fun to drive and it was time again for something newer. In the spring of 2008, the Canadian dollar was at par with the US. The price discrepancy between a similar 911 in the US versus Canada was nearly 40%. I found a “deep ocean blue metallic” 1999 911 in Phoenix AZ. I thought it would be a lot of fun to fly in to Phoenix and drive a 911 back home, so that’s what I did. When I arrived in Phoenix to look at the car, I was surprised by the interior’s rough condition caused by the Arizona sun, but I couldn’t resist and purchased the car after a short test drive. The price was great and all the memories of my previous 911 came back plus I was in a much more modern car. It took about 20 hours to drive from Phoenix to Edmonton, I may have gone over the speed limit :) I thoroughly enjoyed the drive back home, except for some snow I encountered in higher elevations with summer tires. That was scary! After a few years and two kids later, my free time disappeared and I wasn’t driving the 911 as much as I would have liked. I thought a Cayenne was a good solution to keep within the brand and to have a vehicle better suited to my family. I had first driven a Cayenne PORSCHER — NOVEMBER 2019
Page 26
during the promotional launch of the SUV back in 2003. At that time it was -20 degrees and I had a foot of snow on my acreage when I test drove the Cayenne. The SUV didn’t disappoint! My search for a Cayenne ended in Calgary with a 2004 Cayenne S owned by a radio personality. I still have the vehicle today, and it has been great. My Cayenne is showing its age now with over 230,000 km! A newer model is calling my name! In 2014, we moved from Edmonton to Victoria and soon after settling in, I transferred my PCA membership from Edmonton’s Polar Region to Vancouver Island Region. Although I haven’t been out to a VIR event, I enjoy reading about activities the club pursues. It’s the people and the common enjoyment of the vehicles that makes PCA so successful. Looking back, the highlights for me include testing my skills at autocross and driver education events as well as the Porsche factory tour. The Porsche Performance Driving Experience is still on my to do list...maybe in a few years. I’ve also enjoyed new product launches and admire how Porsche has tried to push the technology envelope. I suppose it is the excitement and memories the brand conjures up that has kept me in the club and with the brand. I’ve had the opportunity to drive every Porsche model and I’m sure once the kids are out of the house, I’ll be looking for another 911 or possibly a Cayman. The cars may all be electric by then!

Ross Mosher—Secretary In late 2019 I retired from NAVCANADA. Then Sandy (my wife) and I bought our first Porsche (Macan S) packed it up, loaded in our Golden Retriever and drove out to Vancouver Island to our new home in the beautiful Cowichan Valley. My first encounter with the VIRPCA was at an Eagle Creek Cars and Coffee. I remember driving up to the gathering, seeing all the Porsches lined up and meeting the members who welcomed us like long lost friends. Prove positive of the expression "its not the cars its the people”. After attending a few Cars and Coffees, I got a hankering for another sports car and soon found a beautiful low mileage 2013 white Boxster S. As the new VIRPCA Secretary, I look forward to working with the Executive Board and members to make 2020 a fun filled year.
Trevor Ross—Treasurer My wife Sonia and I transferred from the Wildrose Region to the to the Vancouver Island Region of the PCA in 2018. We purchased our Guards Red 2008 997 C4S from Victoria Porsche but it lived in Calgary where it was my daily driver; snow tyres and seat warmers were a must. We retired several years ago and moved full-time to the Island in 2019. We’re from here originally and have lived here parttime for 15 years. We love living in BC again. I worked in the Oil and Gas industry for 30+ years in various roles in finance and operations. I am past President of a professional association and am excited to volunteer with the VIRPCA as Treasurer. I had only been to a few events before volunteering but enjoyed the people that I met and especially enjoyed seeing the vintage cars come out of their garages. Hope to see lots more.
Imogen Burr—South Island Director In 2013 I bought my 2010 Porsche Cayman and joined the Vancouver Island Porsche Club. I enjoyed the driving activities and people immensely! Previously, I was on the Board in 2015-2016 as Membership Director. For several years I have taken great pleasure in hosting the annual Spring Fling Drive and I look forward to continuing to do so. I am eager to meet and share new driving experiences with our current and new members in 2020!

This year’s club rallies wrapped up with the Fall TSD rally - held end of September. We had a slightly lower turnout, but that was made up by the enthusiasm of the teams and the desire to win. The route started in Nanaimo and wound around town over various interesting back roads to end in Duncan. The weather held reasonably well and the chilly wind could not dampen the spirits. Results were good, but the team favoured to win took a wrong turn and tanked their scores….. that’s the way it goes! Here are the Fall Rally results: First place
– Geoff and Sue (pictured below with the trophy)
Second place – Garth and Rowland Third place
– Chris and Klaus
Now if we combine the scores of the Spring and Fall rally a slightly different picture emerges. Firstly mention must be made of the team that improved the most: Stuart and Cole scored 338 in Spring and dropped their score to 94 in the Fall – that’s an improvement of 244 and got them incredibly close to third position! Geoff and Sue achieved a similar improvement and you can see where that got them….. PORSCHER — NOVEMBER 2019
Page 34
Here are the combined scores:
First
- Garth and Rowland – 165 points ….. Well done, consistency wins!
Second
- Chris and Klaus – 183 points
Third
– Don and Glen – 272 points
At the time of writing the information for the Totem Rally – to be held 16/17 November, has just been posted. Anyone interested? www.rallybc.com/ archives/2019/2019_Totem.htm Photo by Klaus Kreye
Here are my questions for 2020: How many rallies would you be interested in: 2, 3 or more? Do we run this as a series with the winner receiving the floating trophy at the end of the year? If you are a newcomer to rallies and want to join in 2020, let me know and we’ll run a rally school to get you up to speed. As usual any comments, feedback or suggestions are welcome.
