t’s been fantastic to receive such a positive response to the announcement that a full Black Rock event was coming back for 2020. Registration opens on February 8th for the event, which will be held May 14-17th 2020. Since a lot of people are excited to be able to attend this great weekend in Ucluelet/Tofino, I recommend you register early as registration is limited to 145 participants and has been sold out in the past. A block of rooms has been reserved under the club’s name at the Black Rock Resort for accommodation.

More details on both of these events will be provided as they are confirmed in the coming months. It is hard to believe that the holiday season is fast-approaching and another year is coming to an end. If you are looking for gift suggestions or making suggestions to Santa, you may want to have a look at what Club apparel is available in the PCA online store (tinyurl.com/vir-webstore). There is a very large selection available and something for everyone.

I am also happy to announce that for the first time since the Vancouver Island Region was established in 1996, we will be hosting the annual Zone 6 Presidents’ Meeting in Victoria in 2020. Zone 6 has 10 regions covering Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia. Here is an account of a recent tour by some VIR Club members around Germany and their visits to some car factories there. Thanks to Henry and Dan for their submission. Henry Choy’s intro:We all have dreamed of taking in one of those Porsche driving adventures/tours advertised in Panorama but the costs seem very pricey. However, at a very reasonable price, a group of Porsche Club members did just that – embarked on a fantastic car themed journey to Europe to visit car factories/museums this past September. I asked my wife Betty to look for some sort of European car factory tour where a bunch of us Porsche club guys and wives can have a great get away. When finalized, a group of 12; 10 from the VIR Porsche Club - Tim Evans and Marilyn Sing, James and Margaret Bartlett, Brad Blaney, Dan Bourlet, Solomon and Jan Tang, and us (Henry and Betty Choy) took part on this trip. It was a private escorted tour, tailored to what our group had wanted to do and see. It started in Munich for a six day car factory and museum tour (BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Porsche), the Frankfurt auto show, followed by a six day tour to cities in neighboring countries – Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest and Prague. Throughout the entire tour, we enjoyed superb accommodation and meals, plus free beer and snacks on the 20 passenger luxury coach, with plenty of room to spread out on the bus.

Dan’s Bourlet’s article and photos:As a young boy growing up I only dreamed about the coveted Porsche 930 Turbo in Guards Red as in the poster hanging over my bed. When I was invited to join a party of VIR PCA members to go to Germany and visit a number of auto-maker’s museums and manufacturing plants, I was very interested (a bucket-list item). Betty and Henry Choy arranged a great balance of Auto plant visits and European city tours. It took no time to figure out everyone on our tour had a passion for German vehicles, especially my roommate Brad Blaney. Ask Brad about his new book coming out on touring Europe with friends. Due to my background that involves many years of Engineering Controls and Automation, I was fascinated in the Manufacturing assembly plants automation, robotics, control systems, operator interfaces, electrical systems and the cars.

BMW Our first manufacturer visit was BMW Munich and as a previous owner of a BMW, I was familiar with many of their products. BMW’s museum and iconic three tower office are architectural achievements. The manufacturing plant is older and has been upgraded several times to meet changing technology. Unfortunately, you are not permitted to take any pictures of the manufacturing areas. The particular facility that we visited was middle of the road as far as robotics use. BMW has one of the most modern European deliveries and staging areas of all the German competitors. You get to review your new automobile on a revolving platter, presented to you by a BMW technical consultant to explain all your new bells and whistles. PORSCHER — DECEMBER 2019

Page 11

The BMW main entrance has a forum display area of current and future models of BMW, Rolls Royce, Mini, BMW Motorcycles, BMW M Performance series and of course a gift shop. The museum is only a short distance across an elevated walkway over the 4 lane road, and contains a full life history of the Bavarian Motor Works, a very impressive display of their cars, engines and motorcycles throughout the years. The museum also incorporates a good display of concept cars that show the future for BMW. BMW is a must see for any auto buff, with so much history and technology that helped advance the automotive industry in the past and into the future.

Mercedes-Benz The next manufacturer’s museum visit was Mercedes-Benz. It is located in Stuttgart and the manufacturing plant is located 30 minutes away in Sindelfingen. The manufacturing facility was certainly the biggest we visited, almost a small town with it’s own hospital, fire department, 7 or 8 restaurants, train loading site, and city buses have numerous stops to pickup employees from the multiple assembly buildings.

PORSCHER — DECEMBER 2019

Page 12

Mercedes-Benz Museum is a beautiful circular designed building with nine levels; you start the tour by taking an elevator 34 meters up to the top of the building and walking your way down the circular ramp to the next level below. The theme of the museum is based on time (130 years), and the impact or contributions of Mercedes-Benz on design and development throughout automotive history. The top level starts in 1886 when the Mercedes-Benz legend started with the invention by Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz – the automobile.

“Benz and Daimler pursued different intentions in their engineering and design work. Apart from manufacturing stationary engines, Benz concentrated on the development and production of automobiles. Daimler, by contrast used his engines for a highly diversified range of vehicles. His goal was to motorize travel, “on land, on water and in the air”.” The museum contains displays of Daimler’s engineering design, motorized two-wheeler, carriages, boats, rail vehicles, airships, fire-fighting pumps and locomotives. Daimler produced the first truck, Benz the first bus.

The Mercedes-Benz museum was very interesting, as you could see the development of the automobile based on world events.

Audi Our third visit was in Ingolstadt to the Audi Forum and Museum and Audi Factory tour. This particular manufacturing facility was one of the newest and the most automated with a very large portion of the work being performed by robots. Even the assembly line had a higher percentage of automation and robotic control. Robotic functions are usually more routine tasks such as spot-welding in the same exact spot every time or spray painting the PORSCHER — DECEMBER 2019

Page 13

same exact amount of paint every pass. This helps to add a high degree of quality control. Audi was similar to the other manufacturers where they assemble various models of Audis all on the same assembly line. Audi Forum and Museum was smaller than the other manufacturers we visited, but the Audi factory tour was excellent.

Porsche Our fourth tour was the Porsche facility in Stuttgart. The new Porsche Museum is directly across the street from the manufacturing facility. The museum is another architectural marvel, complete with a variety of Porsche legendary racing history models, production models, prototypes, tractors and future models. Equipped with its own service department, they are able to restore many classic Porsches or racing classics to vintage condition or back to their former glory days. Our group had a guided tour as well as free time in the museum and a guided two hour factory tour. During our factory tour we could see the new facility for the PORSCHER — DECEMBER 2019

Taycan manufacturing, not yet available for public tours. It was interesting to see how Porsche has utilized a small land area to maximize their production. As Porsche owners, we quickly appreciated the quality, thoroughness and attention to detail each employee gave to their assembly functions. Quality assurance is certainly given to each vehicle in every stage of production. Next on our adventure was the Frankfurt Auto Show, an overwhelming exhibition. The remainder of our travels were city tours to Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest and Prague. In all, it was truly an amazing adventure and definitely a bucket list item with a great group of people.

Here is the fourth set of Porsche questions from John Clark. The answers to these are on page 37 of this issue. 1.

Most of us are aware of the 914 and 916 Porsches, however, Porsche built more than one 914/8. Why was the first 914/6 built?

2.

Modern cars are exposed to numerous types of crash testing. What Porsche model was the first to be crash tested? Bonus: What year did that happen?

3.

Janis Joplin drove a 356 cabriolet with a psychedelic paint job designed and painted by one of her touring staff. It might be politely referred to as a “hippie” car. Porsche AG wasn’t to be left out of those groovy days. They had their own “hippie” car. What was that car?

Many thanks again to John Clark for the quiz questions and the picture below of Bob Akin’s fabulous Kramer K3 bodied Porsche 935 at Rennsport 2018.

PORSCHER — DECEMBER 2019

Page 22

This year I celebrated 30 years as a member of the Diane Martel & Bryce Holtz Porsche Club of America. However my story extends far beyond these 30 years. In 1963 I bought my first set of “wheels” It was a blue ’57 VW Beetle which led to one of my first jobs as a teenager at a garage in Ottawa, Mark Motors. There they repaired all sorts of European cars, Mercedes Benz, VW, DKW, Audi, and Jaguar and of course Porsche. Years later Mark Motors became the Porsche dealership for the city of Ottawa as a result of the separation of the Porsche franchise from the dealerships that also sold VWs and Audis. It was in my newest role as a car salesman in 1973 at Landsdowne VW Porsche Audi in Ottawa that I was very fortunate to have been given a 1.7 L red 914 as my first “demo”. What a nice car! During my time there I was one day asked to drive a 1976 Porsche 911 Turbo, the first one in Canada, to a display of cars being held at a west end shopping centre. It was a very nerve racking experience for this “rookie” salesman, but it must have suited me well as in 1977 I was awarded the title of #1 VW Porsche Audi salesman in Canada.

Bryce’s 1984 Porsche 944

Fast forward many years and another career later to my move to Victoria. One day I received a call from a Porsche dealer friend. He said I needed to come down to the Porsche Victoria dealership and see a 1984 944 Porsche. Smart guy! As things would have it I drove it home, a proud owner of my new car! Thru one of my visits to the dealership, I met a great couple, Brian and Sue Guenther. They told me they were going to an upcoming PCA event at Whistler. They suggested I should come and I was interested. In order to attend I learned that I had to join the PCA and the rest is the beginning of my 30 year journey with PCA. So it was very fitting that this year 2019, on my 30th anniversary as a member, another PCA event was being held at Whistler. It was great to once again connect with my long time acquaintances Bruce Young, event Chairperson and Joel Parker the president of the Canada West region and many other great people that I have met along the way. PORSCHER — DECEMBER 2019

Page 24

The 944 in track trim

Many of these acquaintances go back a long way, from a time when Porsche owners from Vancouver Island joined up with a group from Canada West and travelled to track day sessions at Seattle International Raceway and the Portland International Raceway.. The 944 I purchased in 1984 got introduced to “track “speed and a lot of fun and comradery was always had by all. It was such a privilege to have been on the track with professional drivers like Kiki Wolfkill and Squire as instructors, not to mention the high level of organization between the Victoria Motorsport autocross series and the PCA members from Vancouver Island. My 944 served me very well during this period and I enjoyed a lot of good times over the years including being a concours winner at both the Monterey and San Diego Porsche parades. It was “bullet” proof and by the time I came to terms with the idea of selling it, it certainly didn’t owe me a nickel! I sold it to the nicest young guy, a Porsche enthusiast in the making, and felt good that he was about to be the proud new owner so many years later. The 944 was an excellent car to learn the dynamics of driving on a track whether the goal was to build speed or autocross skills or both. Overtime these track day sessions, autocross series, local concours and events led to the formation of a chapter called “Vancouver Island Region”. As a group we initiated our own yearly event, the first of which was the Pacific Rim Run, Victoria to Tofino. The drive to Tofino proved to be a rally of sorts, navigating the many corners enroute. It was a great time! Eventually other venues hosted the annual Vancouver Island Region event such as Painters Lodge and Crown Isle in Comox and most recently at Black Rock in Ucluelet. The increase in attendance from year to year was notable as the membership consistently grew. Black Rock was very popular as it was unique in that it had an evening outdoor barbeque which included fireworks. Another perk was its proximity to the Tofino airstrip which was made available to the club to facilitate a high speed autocross course that attracted many highly regarded expert instructors. Needless to say this was very popular and very well attended part of the event. My next Porsche certainly proved to be a learning curve for me, even after all these years doing track and autocross events, as it was a mid- engine 2006 “Speed Yellow” Cayman. My first track run with it was at the Tofino airfield track and to my surprise and delight it handled like a Swiss watch. I could drive it hard around cones and into corners and never worry about it “steeping out”. The tarmac at the Tofino airstrip however, after several years, was becoming an issue for PORSCHER — DECEMBER 2019

Page 25

using it as an autocross venue. The airfield had been established in WW2 to support the war effort and the surface was deteriorating and the sticky racing tires were chewing it up pretty good. The front of my Cayman and that of many of the other cars would attest to that. This Cayman was sold not too much later. Never to be left Porscheless my next purchase was a 911 with a GT3 look-a-like kit, also “Speed Yellow”. The sale was facilitated by an old friend, an executive from the Canada West days, Joel Parker. The car had been featured on the cover of the “Porscher” magazine (2016), a shot taken at the beautiful newly opened track in Cowichan Valley, owned and operated by the GAIN group. Although I liked the 911, I had been considering and talking among my friends about buying another Cayman. At coffee one day a friend asked me how much a new Cayman would cost. Not really knowing, I went home and got on the computer and thru the Porsche site I was able to virtually build a custom 2017 Cayman. I noted that on the site there was the option for “overseas delivery”. I was pleasantly surprised at the reasonable cost, so with my interest peaked I called Porsche Centre Victoria and they gave me the rundown on how the process to place such an order worked. I learned that the overseas delivery option included 16 days of licensing to drive in Europe and insurance as well as being put up in a top rated hotel your first night and driver service from the hotel to the factory the next day for the “delivery”, I was sold!! I drove down to the Victoria dealership from Qualicum Beach and was very professionally and well looked after by Matt, Jason and Tyson, who was able to get me production and delivery dates for the spring of 2017. So off we went to Germany! My new Cayman was built in Stuttgart the very same week as the one millionth vehicle off the production line, a commemorative green 911 that was bequeathed to Dr. Wolfgang PORSCHER — DECEMBER 2019

Page 26

Porsche. Due to Porsche factory renovations in Stuttgart my new Cayman was to be delivered to me via their new presentation centre, at their newest and most modern factory to date, in Leipzig. The property was incredible. Our driver, who picked us up at the hotel drove us up to the doors of the beautiful presentation centre where we were very pleasantly greeted. Several other Porsche owners were gathered as well, awaiting their deliveries. The reception area featured a very comfortable seating area complete with appetizers and beverages. Each party was then introduced to their personal associate. We were escorted to another part of the presentation where the reveal of our new Porsche took place in its own private bay. After the excitement of the reveal, the car’s features were completely reviewed in detail followed by the completion of all necessary documentation. Next, the associate took me down to the new state of the art performance track. Awaiting there was an identical model of my factory order. I took the driver’s seat and proceeded onto the track. The associate is also a professional driver and really coached me through maneuvers to help me understand and feel the capabilities of the car. It was just another amazing part of an absolutely amazing day. And there’s more……! After the track experience, Dianne was invited down to the track level where we both embarked into a Porsche Macan where our associate proceeded to take us on an off-road expedition on the property’s off-road track circuit. Quite the ride and a lot of fun.

Next, all parties convened back in the foyer of the presentation centre where we were escorted to a beautiful chef prepared lunch in a well-appointed dining room. The meal was superb! After lunch we had the privilege to go through the in-house Porsche museum where we saw many historical models and learned many interesting facts about the Porsche story. Then it was time for a tour of the factory where the cars were assembled. The whole production / assembly line process and the logistics of the parts inventory management, were incredulous. It PORSCHER — DECEMBER 2019

Page 28

was a very interesting worthwhile tour. After a very full and memorable day we were handed the keys to our new “ride” and drove away grinning ear-to-ear, very thankful to have had our GPS programmed for Europe. More memories were to be made as we then had the opportunity to visit some very dear and long-time friends who live in Unterlangenegg Switzerland, close to Thun. We visited many towns and cities throughout our tour of Switzerland and Germany and had nothing but wonderful experiences at each turn. On our last day, we dropped the Cayman off at a designated overseas delivery broker in Stuttgart and once all the documentation was complete we took the train to the airport for our trip home. Eight weeks later we drove our new Cayman home from Victoria to Qualicum Beach, not a mark on it. For anyone who is considering buying a brand new Porsche this delivery program is absolutely fabulous. I highly recommend it! Ironically, as I was proof reading and editing my draft for this story, my commemorative certificate and citation as a 30 year member of the PCA arrived in the mail. However, my love of Porsches has truly been 60 years long from my first introduction at my first job so long ago. Porsche has developed into the most advanced sports car on the track and the leader in electric vehicles on the road and track. The Porsche family must be congratulated for their innovation and advances and the significant contribution and role they played in the history of automobile development in the world. To the PCA, and in particular the Vancouver Island Region of the PCA, congratulations on promoting and perpetuating conPORSCHER — DECEMBER 2019

As Dan joined the Board mid term in 2019, here is his bio. Dan Bourlet—Mid-Island Director I have been a PCA member since 2008 when I bought my first Porsche. As a young boy growing up I only dreamed about the coveted Porsche 930 Turbo in Guards Red as in the poster hanging over my bed. I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and after High School, I bought my first car, a VW Beetle. I worked for a year before graduating from Electrical Technology and after graduation I moved to Calgary to start a career in computer based control systems. After a 36 year career I retired and with my wife Tracy, we moved to Vancouver Island. We are enjoying our retirement, meeting so many interesting people from all walks of life. PCA has given me the opportunity to meet many very friendly people with our common interest. In 2008 I had the opportunity to drive a Cassis Red 930 Turbo, and after a few drives I regrettably decided not to purchase. Then moved onto buying a new 2008 RS-60 Spyder Boxster S (limited edition). After that in 2009 I bought a 1986 Carrera 3.2 Guards Red whale tail and sunroof, a beautiful air-cooled car. I sold the 3.2 in 2012 and replaced it with a 2004 911 Turbo Cabriolet. As an enthusiast, I have great respect and appreciation for how each car is so different and handles in its own distinctive way. Vancouver Island Region PCA is unique, with a very large geographic area and with very interesting, loyal members. We have common interests in the ability of each Porsche, with the members enjoying a variety of activities, drives and events. We live in such a beautiful area and are so fortunate to be able to enjoy a longer driving season than other chapters. I am proud to be a VIR member.
