he new Porsche Taycan is coming to Victoria soon. I think it's arrival is similar to Porsche's entry into the SUV market back in 2002 (is it that long already?) which many people say saved Porsche financially. This time however, it is not a new body style, but a new powertrain, all electric and building on Porsche's extensive hybrid knowledge from the 918 (road version) and 919 (FIA race version). Porsche had some catching up to do with obvious competition from Tesla, but are these cars aiming for the same car buyers? Porsche obviously has a definite sports car following and that is what the Taycan is aimed at, whereas I think the Tesla is more for the up-market, sporty sedan. Not until the all electric Macan or Cayenne comes out will it be an equal comparison. It sure will be an interesting time in 2020!

Dan Schuetze has taken over the Club’s Membership Chair role from Garth Webber Atkins (thank you Garth & Dan) for 2020 — so please contact him at membership@virpca.org with any membership related issues.. Here is Dan’s biography:My first “Porsche” memory was at the age of 12, going for a ride in a 1979 930. Under acceleration it felt like I was taking off in a jet. Many years later I was able to buy my first Porsche it was a 1970 911E. I have since sold the 1970 and own a few cars but currently drive a 1968 912, I really enjoy the classics and the driving experience they offer. I am in the construction industry and have been for the last 20+ years but cars are really my passion. My wife, kids and I live on the Saanich Peninsula and couldn’t imagine a better place to live in Western Canada. I look forward to being able help out as the new VIRPCA Membership Chair.

Paul Rossmo has volunteered for the new position of Classics Chair in the Club. A most familiar name to most of our Club members we are sure. You can contact Paul at paul.rossmo@prhistorics.com with any Porsche classic related issues.. Here is Paul’s biography:I was born and grew up in Vancouver. In 1972, after working all summer to save for a car for college, I came across a 1964 356C coupe which was only 5 times my budget. Passion is a huge motivator for me and after visiting only 12 banks I was driving my Porsche to school. This set me on a career path different than the one I had envisioned. Sportscars and racing were my interests and Porsche was my weapon of choice. I’ve enjoyed a lifetime working with Porsche cars. I joined the Porsche Club in 1981. Over the years I have been privileged to spend time with so many talented and interesting people who make up the PCA. In 2008 I moved to Victoria and found there was a huge level of Porsche interest and a very active club. As the Classics Chair I hope to celebrate the history of Porsche and encourage events that bring like minded owners together. With both an experienced Executive Board and an enthusiastic membership, I’m looking forward to 2020.

Here is the 5th set of Porsche questions from John Clark. The answers to these are on page 37 of this issue. 1.
Porsche 356Bs and 356Cs are virtually identical. How can you easily distinguish one from the other?
2.
How many 356s were built?
3.
Porsche AG. first contested the 24 Heures du Mans race in 1951. What was the BHP rating of that car’s engine?
Many thanks to John Clark for the quiz questions, and answers!

I’d like to thank you for the opportunity to act as your Classics Chair. I hope together we will find ways to celebrate the history of Porsche throughout the year. Every month I will write an article which I hope will interest you, including racing car history, road car history and restoration articles. Please email me with any ideas or specific interests you may have. As an opener to my monthly article I would like to relate member’s memories of their first experience of a Porsche. I want to hear yours. My first Porsche experience: In High School I purchased my first motorcycle. Determined to be a fast rider I would regularly use Stanley Park to hone my skills. Our football team practiced at 2nd beach and one of the members on the team had a Porsche (probably owned by his dad). I expressed to him my disbelief that I could barely keep up with him through the corners. This compliment merited my first ride in a Porsche. it was a Silver right hand drive Karmann Coupe with a blue interior and tartan seat inserts. How I’d like to find that car now! I thought I’d start the year off with one of my favourite Porsche race cars, the 909 Bergspyder (Mountain Spyder). This purpose-built Hill Climb car focused on success by embracing extreme light weight and agility. Note: A high power to weight ratio gives only good acceleration whereas lighter weight enhances acceleration plus gives better cornering and braking.
VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
FEBRUARY 2020 Page 15
Porsche factory entries had a long history of dominating European Hill Climbs. The European rules stipulated a 2.0 litre engine displacement but there was no minimum weight requirement. Thus, for 1968 Porsche designed the diminutive 909 with a total length of only 344 cms. Only two were ever built. Ferdinand Piech the driving force behind the project determined the key to winning was extreme light weight. It was rumoured that Piech checked every component with a magnet and if it stuck engineers were told to source a lighter alternative. A tubular aluminum space frame was constructed from tubes about the size of your thumb; no steel was employed, not even for fasteners as every gram counted. The wiring loom was silver to save weight, and they even designed resistors made from balsa wood. The suspension springs were Titanium (or “Unobtanium” as Mark Donahue called it due to the cost). It had a tiny 15 litre fuel tank which was pressurized to save the weight of a fuel pump. This proved to be an unreliable feature. There was no alternator as the battery could supply spark for the duration of the race. The most remarkable use of exotic materials was the fabrication of brake discs made from Beryllium, the dust from which is listed as a Category One carcinogen on par with asbestos and radium. The cost was insane as in today’s dollars, each disc would be in the five figure range. Power was supplied by the 2.0 litre flat 8 cylinder built in 1962 for Porsche’s entry into Formula One. Weighing only 385 kilograms and with an engine producing 285 horsepower, the 909 could accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in 2.4 seconds. The 909 was only raced twice driven by Rolf Stommelen (while recovering from a broken arm) and garnered only 2 podium finishes - 2nd and a 3rd. This ended the 1968 season and Porsche chose not to enter the 1969 Hillclimb season choosing instead to put their efforts into endurance racing. VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
FEBRUARY 2020 Page 16
The 909 was constructed in a time when safety was not considered. Development was based on actual race experience and not computer modelling. I can only imagine what Rolf experienced when piloting an untested sports racer up a twisting mountain road with the flat eight shrieking behind him and his legs well ahead of the front axle. The front suspension anti-roll bar is above the drivers thighs and his feet were the crumple zone.
It is easy to sound cavalier about this, but the previous year crashes in 910’s broke Rolf’s arm and cost the life of Scarfiotti in another incident. It is interesting to consider what the 909 could have been had it entered a full development phase rather than being shelved, as it is often pointed out that a team manager like John Wyer, took the Porsche 917 from being a terrible car to a winner in one winter. If you’re at the Porsche factory find the 909 and be amazed!

Paul Rossmo and I are planning to organize some activities for our 928 group this year. The goal this year would be to raise our 928 group’s profile amongst our Porsche Club group by organizing drive / lunch events and getting a group shot of all the 928s together published in the PCA Panorama magazine. If you can, please email me (wymanlee@telus.net) the following information regarding your 928: model year, interior / exterior color, transmission type, mileage and what year you purchased the car. If you know of anyone else locally with a 928, please have them email me or give me their email address. If you have any ideas for an event, please forward it to us. We will be putting out some options for this coming Spring. Courtesy of Rob Turner, Maverick Region Oh yeah – that oil-pressure spring. It was Editor easy, took me only a few minutes to change Back in the early aughts, I owned a 1976 930 Turbo Carrera. I truly loved it. However, over a period of time, it began to scare the hell out of me every time I drove it. I noticed a slapping noise coming from the engine bay when I let off the gas, especially when up-or -down shifting. After some research, it appeared to be a failing oil pressure spring in the fuel injection system which caused the piston that bled off the internal oil pressure to slap or bottom out. A fix was needed. The housing for the spring was on the back of the engine (or front) – depending on your orientation. But from my vantage point, it was on the back. I don’t have huge hands but no matter how I tried to squeeze my hand into the tiny opening, I couldn’t get access to it. I tried to custom bend tools to access the bolts holding the assembly together. No dice. So, with the help of a friend, we figured out how to take the engine and transmission out of the car. We chocked the front wheels and jacked the back up using the biggest jack stands I could find. The car looked pretty funny: its nose low to the ground and the rear tilted up at an extreme angle. Slowly, the engine emerged from the bottom of the 930, a fraction of an inch at a time. We managed to clear the bumper with a half inch to spare. Lowered onto an engine stand made from a furniture dolly, we could finally work on it. Side note: we got so good at removing the engine, the half shafts, clutch cable, fuel and oil lines, and unplugging the engine harness, we could take the motor out (or put it back in) in ninety minutes. It usually cost me a six-pack of good (pre micro-brewery) imported beer. Cheap? You bet. VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
it. But then I got to thinking. What else could I do? You know, while you’re in there. I adjusted the valves, replaced the clutch and flywheel, repacked the half-shafts, took out the nasty old sound insulation from the engine bay and replaced with new. It seems like every time I did one thing, dozens of others popped up. It was like playing whack -a-mole. I had told my wife all I was going to do was replace that spring. Five thousand dollars later, I had refreshed or refurbed many of the engine-bay components. Then there was the AC system. The drier unit needed replacing. But after inspecting the AC hoses, I realized they were shot. So, in another episode of – while you’re in there – I replaced the AC hoses. First, I priced them. Back then Porsche still sold the fabric-wrapped replacement sets (they’re no longer available). But I could buy them then if I didn’t mind spending almost three grand. As that was a budget buster, I took the hoses to an aeronautical firm that custom built hoses. Price? Three hundred bucks. And, an exact match. Problem was they were hard to install. Turns out the fabric-wrapped hoses bend easily. The rubber ones I bought, not so much. So, I spent an entire weekend kneeling in the front of the 930, the hood carefully propped open, bending hoses. My knees felt like they were on fire, they hurt so bad. But hey, while you’re in there. The point? How many times have you started an automotive project and realized that if you just do a little bit more, you can take care of a future project, you know - save time, save money. Because, while you’re in there. Recently I spent over five hours refurFEBRUARY 2020 Page 24
bishing the wheel barrels on my 981 S. I decided to remove the leftover rubber residue from having the old wheel weights removed at a tire shop. I came back upstairs several hours later, knuckles busted up, bleeding a bit and my wife looked at me and said, “I thought you were only going to wash the wheels. Oh wait – it’s another case of while you’re in there. Right?” Yep, busted again. Guilty as charged.

The Totem Rally was held over 2 days Sat/Sun 16/17 Nov and is the final round of the BC Rally Championship as well as the final round of the Pacific Coast Challenge. These are all TSD - Time Speed Distance events. Friday was taken off and I set course for Cache Creek – the starting point. Rendezvous with my navigator at Horseshoe Bay and took the scenic route via HWY 99. Little traffic meant we could “enjoy” the roads. Friday night is registration and tech inspection. Once passed you get the route book and we go back to the room to grind the numbers which takes a shade over 2 hours and we were ready for the weekend. Saturday morning dawned overcast with slight drizzle. The starting point for stage 1 was at higher elevation and by the time we got there, the rain had turned into light snow. For some reason we did very well on stage 1 (all 3 checkpoints within +- 3 sec) and then got a bit out of whack on stage 2. But I had a rookie navigator that had never done anything like this before! Stage 3 we were starting to loose time – I should have put in a time declaration when we had to stop for the bull crossing the road - at HIS pace! By the time we got to stage 4 the snow was getting considerably heavier and the going got uphill and tough. We were running WAY late, but kept it on the road. At least 3 other cars went off the road! We skipped the last stage (= max demerit points!) and headed straight to Williams Lake to enjoy a late dinner at the Laughing Loon. Stories were told and there was a general consensus that conditions had been unusually tough.
Sunday dawned bright and clear – a complete contrast. The Chilcotin presented itself at it’s very best. Taking part in these events takes you to places you might ordinarily not go to visit and always brings home the beauty of our province. Of course the rain over the last 24 hrs had absolutely soaked sections of the gravel roads and it was a wonderful mud bath!!! Sunday had a total of 4 stages with one “monster” stage of 95 km that took an hour and a half! That was a long time to remain concentrated and any relaxation/drop in speed brought a nudge from my navigator and necessitated a “dash” of speed to get back on time. Apart from 2, all our checkpoints for the day were taken within +- 10 seconds. So we were happy with our performance. We were somewhat surprised to have car 13 appear behind us. We were running as car 11, so they should have been 2 minutes behind us. The usual question: did we make a mistake or did they? We were confident and let them past once there was an opportunity. The scores confirmed we were on track and we finished the day on 79 points, whereas car 13 amassed 794 points. That all pales when you realise the leaders finished the entire weekVANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
FEBRUARY 2020 Page 31
end with only 52 points – the top 3 were all below 100 points (lowest score wins – these are demerit points for being early or late). In the end we placed in the lower third, but it was all good fun and we got the car and ourselves back home without any damage or incident. The Thunderbird Rally is next – Feb 2020.
