Work proceeds on our Strategic Plan commitments for 2020. See Karl Hoener’s article on the next page for information on the web site redesign project. Since that project intended to seek input from members via Survey Monkey, the Board decided to piggyback on that with questions about Club communications, and your ideas for 25 th anniversary celebrations. Once the results are compiled, they will be shared with Club members. My planning efforts for the Saanich Peninsula Driving Tour are on hold, as are all gatherings, while the world copes with COVID-19. The tour, originally scheduled for April 26th, is cancelled, and will be rescheduled when health guidelines permit. It was an enjoyable day or two, though, exploring the roads and stops of interests on the peninsula, and I look forward to sharing some of those experiences with you when we are able to do so.

I have won the job of “Project Leader” for this endeavor after replying to an open request for help from the executive. I have a 2001 911 Turbo that I bought almost 10 years ago – still love it! I have been developing software for 35 years and websites as long as there has been Internet. My software company is ComTech Advanced Software Technologies (ComTech.ws). We have gathered a group together from the Club to move the project along. Although we get lots of input from the Club executive, we have a team dedicated to the update. Members include: Dave Nickel – VIR Webmaster Garth Webber Atkins – VIR Vice President Dave Goede – Interested enthusiast Karl Hoener (me) – Update Team Leader Things have been moving along at a steady pace. Here is the timeline so far: 18 Feb 2020 - President's Update 20 Feb 2020 - Dave Goede offered some hours and expertise should it be needed. 21 Feb 2020 - Dave Nickel (current webmaster) was brought into the update Team.

22 Feb 2020 - VIR PCA Update tracking site established. 1 Mar 2020 - Wire Frame for updated site was added based on email input. 12 Mar 2020 - Terms of Reference for the update presented to the board and approved. 16 Mar 2020 - Survey sent out to membership for general feedback. The survey link sent out in the last President’s email is open until 31 March. All of the information gathered so far will be analyzed and the content of the new site will be decided. Once we have a firm grasp of the content, we can start thinking about technical requirements and what the site will look like. So much more to do.

The Cure for Racing Withdrawal You say you’re pining for the scream of an F1 engine? You shaking for those in-car views that seem like they’re running at 2x speed, only they’re actually real-time? You miss that life-size drama about careers that have been pointed toward a seat in F1 since the protagonists were eight years old? Well, bunkie, I’ve got a solution for you. Formula 1: Drive to Survive, season two. You can find it on Netflix. And it’s free. Ten episodes. And, of course, Netflix makes it really easy to binge-view the production. After an episode ends, you do nothing. The system automatically segues to the next one.

ries. No glimpses into driver negotiations, for example. No shots of drivers being told their services will no longer be needed. No analysis of performance data. No idea of just what the actual performance envelope of an F1 car actually is today. Other than the A year ago, I reviewed season one. Last time around, Mercedes and Ferrari didn’t participate. As a result, the producers were forced to cover everyone else. Which really amplified the drama associated with all the teams trying to be “best of the rest.” The drivers, the team principals, the whole traveling circus.

And the kids … ok, we can call most of them young adults … who have devoted virtually all of their formative years to one dream. To be an F1 “pilot.” You see them literally pinching themselves. Has this been done before? With the exception of the movie Senna, I don’t think so.

Yes, it’s back. Only, this time around, with Mercedes and Ferrari also participating. I know, I know. Don’t worry, of course they’re covered. But not to the detriment of the rest of the field.

The story theme that occupies much of the narrative revolves around Pierre Gasley, now in Daniel Ricciardo’s seat at Red Bull, trying to establish himself. Christian Horner, Red Bull Team Principal, says, “If they’re good enough, they survive. If they’re not good enough…. The thing is, who’s good enough to partner with Max Verstappen. P7 or 8 or 9 has no value to us.”

Albon’s first race for Red Bull is at Spa. Verstappen drops out at the start. Albon goes from 14th to 5th. His career best. In his Red Bull debut.

At the end of the race, Russell says, “lap after lap, the car’s like a yoyo. I feel like an idiot.”

Cyril Abiteboul, team principal at Renault. “I know that, if I don’t deliver, my life expectancy is very short.” His dilemma is what to do about Nico Hulkenberg who, we learn, has had the longest career in F1 without a podium. There’s no way he doesn’t think about it, says journalist Will Buxton.

The series concludes with a big nod toward 2020. Zak Brown, McLaren Team Principal, notes that they have had a successful season, but they have a long way to go, if they want to catch the top three. Their driver Carlos Sainz has proven very competitive in his first season for them.

Dry Sumps Modern engines require a supply of clean oil of the correct viscosity at the recommended temperature to pressurize and circulate throughout the engine to lubricate and protect all of the moving parts. Without this lubrication the reciprocating and rotating parts suffer catastrophic failure. The oil also serves to protect engine components from wear and corrosion. Very early on, vehicles relied on “Oil Splashing” within the engine. Oil was picked up in the sump by the big end of the connecting rods and hurled into the crankcase where a series of galleries collected the oil and through gravity fed bearings and gears. Cylinder walls also relied on this form of lubrication. Besides being inefficient, anyone who has been swimming knows the resistance felt passing their hand through water. Imagine the power loss passing rotating parts through something as viscous as oil. Clearly a better solution was required.

Improvements began with a combination of the ‘Splash’ system with the addition of an engine driven oil pump to pressure feed the main bearings. The rest of the engine was forced to rely on ‘Splashed Oil’. This soon found its limits and it was clear a fully pressurized lubrication system was needed to advance engine performance and reliability. A key component, and I will come back to this later is the need for the oil to cool surfaces within the engine. We now see the introduction of forced lubrication systems that no longer rely on random oil splashing nor gravity for lubrication. An engine driven pump now sucks oil through a pickup tube from a pan (aka wet sump) located on the bottom of the engine. This oil is then pressurized through oil galleries which feed the oil through a filter and on to feed the working parts of the engine. I’d like to discuss a couple of types of oiling systems and the variety of sumps we see in use. These are the ‘Wet Sump’, ‘Deep Sump’, ‘Accusump’ and ‘Dry Sump’.

In discussing each type, lets first recap the engine requirements. Clean oil requires efficient filtration during circulation. Cool oil requires a design that allows the oil to reduce in temperature before being reemployed. A large amount of engine cooling is performed by the oil. VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

At the time of writing the world is enduring the novel coronavirus pandemic. Most of us are sheltering in place, maintaining limited and distant social contact and (perhaps) polishing our Porsches. It has caused me to reflect on what, if any, tragedies might have affected our Porsche world. Accordingly please read the following questions and answers that might prove “interesting” during these trying times. 1. What was the name of the young driver of the car that collided (see below) with James Dean’s Porsche 550 Spyder and what kind of car was he driving?

2. Question: Brumos’ Porsche racing stalwart Peter “Perfect” Gregg was scheduled to drive in the 1980 24 Hours of Le Mans driving a factory entered 924 Carrera GTS with Al Holbert. He was unable to partake in the event. Why was that? 3. Question: Rolf Stommelen was a competitive and successful Porsche works driver. He died as a result of what fluke racing incident?

Those of you interested in learning more about James Dean’s tragedy might like to see the video: “The Stuff of Legend, James Dean’s Final Ride”, Santa Clara Historical Society, February 15, 2009. I hope all of our readers stay safe and healthy as we endure this serious pandemic; the likes of which we have never before experienced.

Alignment or balance? “I get a shimmy at speed”, or “my car pulls to the left when cruising down the road” are two of the most common complaints regarding steering wheel feedback ... and the question generally following is: “Should I have an alignment done, or do I need balancing?”

I will attempt to oversimplify what otherwise are complex and very precise adjustments, very important for your Porsche to perform at its best. ble when the tire rotates, generating vertical Balance or lateral vibrations which may increase with The technical definition of balance is: the speed and which can be felt through the uniform distribution of mass about an axis of steering wheel.

The best way to balance tires is by dynamic Because of manufacturing imperfections and/or additional requirements such as the tire’s valve stem, the tire pressure monitoring system, etc., when a tire is mounted on it’s wheel the combined weight distribution is not perfect. This can be corrected by the addition of small weights strategically attached to the edge or underside of the wheel. Tire balance actually encompasses balancing the tire and the wheel to which it is mounted on. Tire balancing is a necessity because an imbalance of mass will cause the wheel to wobVANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

balance, where tires are mounted on a rotating axle which has sensors capable of detecting small unbalanced forces on the axle. These sensors are connected to a computer which calculates the forces and taking into account the diameter and width of the tire, tells the operator how much counter weight to add and exactly where to add it on the wheel to eliminate the imbalance. There are actually several types of imbalance that can occur:

Static Imbalance: The vertical movement resulting from light or heavy wear spots on a tire. Dynamic Imbalance: Side-to-side movement resulting from unequal weigh on the sides of the tire and/or wheel. Run-out Imbalance: Excessive movement generally due to improper bead seating of the tire on the wheel. APRIL 2020 Page 24

Vehicle Imbalance: Vibration due to vehicle components other than tire/wheel assembly, such as brake rotor, wheel hubs and drive lines. Static and dynamic imbalance can be corrected with a dynamic (spin) balancer. Runout can be corrected by properly remounting the tire and vehicle imbalance can be corrected by replacing or repairing the imbalanced component.

All of our cars come from the factory precisely aligned, but alignment is not permanent. Bumps, pot holes, curbs and general wear will affect the alignment settings which need to be brought back to spec periodically. With a proper alignment (as close to the factory specs as possible), you will be able to reduce excessive tire wear, have good cornering traction, and maintain high speed stability in your Porsche.
