guess I should change my winter tires for my summer ones soon, however it is the one year service for my Macan coming up in a few days so I’ll leave it until then. The Porsche dealership in Victoria is doing it’s best just like every other business handling the requirements of the Provincial health authority and melding those into it’s own business practices. As you can see from the adverts in this and previous issues, Porsche Centre Victoria have a ‘Service From Home’ feature, they will pick up your car and deliver it back to you once the work is complete. Ok, most of us don’t mind driving of course, but in these times, if it takes one risk out of the process by not hanging around in the mall waiting for the work to be completed, then that is a good thing. Plus if it keeps people employed rather than being furloughed, then that is even better. I’ll be using it soon. Stay safe!

In 1984 I went to a PCA event in Oklahoma and on the way back I rented a car and spent a week exploring Colorado. While there I learned of an independent Porsche shop that was owned by a true enthusiast. Scanning some old photos, I came across a roll of shots from my visit.
ners of shops but the silver car shown parked in front of the Spyder is what prompted me to write this article. I remember him telling me that he had purchased it from a seller in North Vancouver and yet even in a time where you could know almost every Porsche in Vancouver, I never remember seeing it there. It is a Beutler bodied 356B.
Many of us imagine the body of a car is always produced by the manufacturer and though this is the case with many large car builders there is a history of specialty car makers of both luxury and sports cars to employ the services of dedicated coach builders (Karroserie). In the case of Porsche the first cars from Gmund were hand built from aluminum hammered out over a wooden buck. This is time consuming, expensive and encourages inconsistencies in the construction. chassis. As sales increased in 1950 Porsche contracted their work to Karroserie Reutter with whom they had first established a relationship with when building the Paris-Rome cars before the war. The 50’s saw a huge increase in Porsche model variants from coachbuilders located in Europe and the United States. Some examples of very limited production cars were produced by Ghia, Glaser, Glocker and even customizers like Dean Jeffries.
In the late 1950’s Porsche stabilized their production, using Reutter to build their coupes in steel. I see this as a turning point would say in 1958 we see the beginning of volume models with the 356A. This is also the year Porsche contracted with Drauz to produce the ‘Convertible D’. Drauz was well regarded for their convertible top work which was a factor in Porsche’s decision to use them. The bodies were trucked to the Porsche factory for final assembly. Reutter was now having trouble keeping up to Porsche’s volume so Karmann was engaged to bolster production. Reutter was purchased by Porsche and for a very short time there was a Porsche Karosserie. In 1962, we see the Swiss based company of Beutler returning to the scene to produce a stretched 4-seater version of Porsche’s new model the 356B. The nose is remarkably Porsche, while the sides and rear of the body are completely unique. They also utilized

By Mark & Shawn Titterton, VIR members One of the dangers of opening your computer during the rainy season on Gabriola Island is that you might run across the invite to PCA Parade in your email. Images of palm trees and pastel neon lights bounced around my brain and I thought I heard the ”Colonel” (our 2014 PCA raffle win Targa, see Panorama 709 April 2016) momentarily self start and give a quiet rev out in the garage as my finger hovered over the sign up for Parade now button. I sense the Colonel’s namesake, my father, fighter pilot and the family’s original Porsche road tripper giving me the thumbs-up from somewhere beyond the stars.
A theme for the drive would have to be created. Sure, it’s relatively easy to pound across the country on the interstates and that will get you there but where’s the sport in that?
The more I look at the Boca Parade link, the more the stars align, our youngest daughter lives just south of Miami, the parade is at Boca Raton Resort, the resort looks lovely and is famous for it’s style and atmosphere and the roads between the Northwest and the Southeast of the continent are some of the best and most culturally diverse in the world.
A search of the top roads in America slowly developed into a fully fledged obsession. We would do the highest, the lowest, and the twistiest historic roads of America. Throw in some chunks of the Mississippi blues highway, a few famous national parks, stopovers at Porsche Experience Center Atlanta, a night at the Wentworth Inn Charleston, the

A driving distance 15,998 km (9,940 miles) give or take. THE PLAN ACCORDING TO SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED (NAVIGATOR) When planning trips designed to avoid the direct route and rediscover Mom and Pop America, it takes a willful resistance to Google’s “get you there now” methodology. Prolific use of the reroute function comes into play along with reviews of travel blogsites and driving reviews. I find often the best curvy roads are buried in motorcyclist blogs. As we begin the early planning stages I glance at the 4-inch-thick binder that contains the route notes (official rally term) for our Treffen Tamaya, a trip about one quarter the distance. A quick calculation and I realize the route binder for Highs and Lows trip could reach a space gobbling 16 inches or worse, two 8-inch binders. I suggest a digital solution but am quickly overruled and as I hear the printer spooling up, I Google double sided printing. Atlanta.
The Wentworth lives up to its reputation and while there we realize one of the greatest thrills we enjoy as one gets closer to Parade venue, is crossing paths with fellow PCA’ers also heading to Parade. We meet a delightful couple at happy hour, Jimmy and Carol from New Jersey on their way to Boca. He is a fireman and we honor his service and commitment during 911.
We cross the border into Florida, stop for the obligatory orange juice and sign up for a Sun-Pass to facilitate toll booths, nothing worse than trying to negotiate a toll booth mid rally. We arrive at Boca Ratan Resort late afternoon along with hundreds of other Porsches, the parking garage is shared with the hotel staff and I have a minor incident with a very rough Honda civic hastily exiting the garage. I eventually negotiate a secure parking spot above the car wash area after a few laps around the car park and satisfied that the Colonel has a safe place for the night, head to our room to join SWMBO.
After a couple days of southern hospitality in Charleston we head out of South Carolina, vowing to return, sooner than later, heading south for the Florida border with the upbeat tunes of Flo Rida’s “I got a good feeling” blasting over the car stereo. Fellow PCA‘ers are more numerous now, 2000 PCA members, 800 plus cars attended Boca Parade. The Spark of Life The spark of life in any internal combustion gasoline engine comes from its Spark Plugs. Spark plugs are foremost in your car’s ability to run and make power, yet they are one of the most overlooked and misunderstood components of the car. So, let’s delve a little deeper into the subject. The spark plug has two primary functions:
Spark plugs convert the energy contained in the fuel into dynamic energy in the engine. They do this by lighting a spark which sets off an explosion in each cylinder, making the pistons push into the crank, thus making it rotate.
1. To ignite the air/fuel mixture in the enThe spark plug is quite a simple part, in theogine’s cylinders 2. To remove heat from the combustion ry. chamber It is a hollow piece of metal, threaded on one end, containing an isolated conductor running down its center. It forces a high-voltage current initiated by the car’s ignition system (coils) to arc (jump) across a gap, just like a bolt of lightning does between the clouds and the earth. This current must be at very high voltage in order to create the “lightning” by jumping the gap. Voltage at the spark plug ranges between 12,000 and 25,000 volts although 45,000 volts is not uncommon. In order for it to work, the spark plug needs an insulator that allows the current to travel down the electrode where it then can jump the gap and then run into the grounded engine block. The plugs use an insulator, generally made of ceramic (porcelain) to isolate the high voltage running down the electrode, making sure that the spark happens at the tip of the electrode (inside the engine’s combustion chamber) and not anywhere else on the VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

overheating (> 800°C). Low heat range plugs have center electrode temps that rise easily and even at low speed, so they easily reach the self-cleaning temperature, so carbon is not deposited easily on the insulator section. High heat range plugs have center electrode temps that do not rise easily, so they are unlikely to reach pre-ignition temps even at high speed. That’s why it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations with the appropriate heat range for the engine characteristics, running conditions, etc.
palladium, platinum, iridium, etc. So, which one is best? Here’s the skinny: Platinum and iridium-coated plugs with a copper core won't boost horsepower or fuel economy; they'll just last longer and perform more consistently. Both platinum and iridium fine-wire plugs will outperform coppertipped plugs, but the iridium's ability to withstand high temperatures allows for a thinner plug tip. In the real world, though, you're unlikely to see any measurable change in fuel economy using iridium instead of platinum plugs. Platinum will do everything iridium does outside of the most severe racing applications. Iridium can give engine builders a slight edge in very high-compression, turbocharged or supercharged engines, but this edge isn't likely to translate into increased fuel economy in a street engine.
Every time a spark plug fires, the hot spark blasts a few molecules of metal off the electrode. As the miles add up, the electrode gap widens and the center electrode becomes rounded and dull. This increases the firing voltage needed to jump the gap. Eventually the point is reached where the ignition sys- Remember: Getting the heat range right is tem can’t generate enough juice to jump the way more important than the type of metal gap, causing plugs to misfire. Check your particular Porsche Owner’s Manual for the optimal replacement mileage (in a modern Porsche, generally between 60,000 – 100,000 miles). The best advice for spark plugs is to inspect them every 30,000 miles. This serves several purposes: 1. It tells you a lot about how the engine is performing 2. It prevents plugs from seizing in the engine block, causing expensive repairs. Always note which cylinder a plug came from. This tells you if a particular cylinder has a problem. had been a European sports correspondent for The New York Times. I have two of his. The first, Cars at Speed, is from 1966. He covers the drivers and the circuits from the era. The second is The Cruel Sport, which dissects what goes on, during a race weekend. I have a reissue large-format version from 2005. The opening page to Cars at Speed features a white page, with only the following quote, “This is a cruel sport.” And, underneath, the words “Dan Gurney, after crashing and killing a spectator in the 1960 Dutch Grand Prix.”
Dan Gurney and Stewart. A year ago, none of the others had ever heard Stewart’s name. Stewart says flatly, ‘Jimmy’s fastest. The other four of us are about the same.’” Still more: In his epilogue, he talks about a photo he took at Monaco, of Lorenzo Bandini’s crash, which took his life. Let me pause to say this means a lot to me, as I distinctly remember watching it, with my father, on Wide World of Sports. The car was inverted, in flames, just down from the tunnel. And the “pompiers” kept trying to put out the blaze, only to be pushed back, again and again, by bursts of flame. Here’s what Daley writes, “At a certain point I gave myself a lecture. Take the picture, I told myself. I don’t care. I told myself. Set the aperture, set the speed, and take the picture. You’re a professional. Take it, take it…. Suddenly, finally, I had had enough. I didn’t want to see anything like that again. I couldn’t bear to go back, not to Monaco, not to anywhere else the fast cars ran…. For me, The Cruel Sport was over. I have never gone back and do not think I ever will.”
Daley’s prologue to the large format book, that lifts the title from Gurney’s quote, ends with this. “Shortly after the (original) book came out a driver named Bruce McLaren asked me to sign his copy. McLaren was from New Zealand, and he had a game leg from a schoolboy accident – he had fallen from a horse. A nice young man. Opening to the flyleaf I wrote, ‘When you are an old man, I hope this book will help you remember how it was when you were young.’ Then I thought, as I handed the book back to him: but you won’t live to be an old man.
