fter I mentioned in July’s Porscher that we only had one driving event on the schedule for August, it turned out to be a very busy month for the Club with three driving events. Marilyn and I managed to participate in two out of the three unique events and attended the monthly Cars & Coffee in Courtenay. We enjoyed the two trips up there, where we met Up-Island members and led the drive up to Mt. Washington. Certainly, a big highlight was the lunch at the end of the Cowichan Cruise, provided by Dean and Ann Aikenhead at their home. Check out all the pictures and stories in this issue of the Porscher.

offered this year has had wait lists, as we have kept within the required 50 participant restriction.

As I mentioned last month, the Club’s yearend is August 31st and the Executive would normally be planning our Annual General Meeting (AGM) to bring members together to review the year, elect a new Executive, hand out awards and meet socially. It is looking highly unlikely that we will be able to physically get together this year, so we are planning to hold the AGM online via Zoom. I’m happy to report that the current Executive has agreed to stay on for another year. eter Trzewik of GAIN asked me to say that Dave Hargraves is the person responsible at Coachwerks for managing the work on that beautiful blue 964 seen in last month’s issue. I am happy to do that. Great job Dave!

Rumours were circulating last month in some Macan forums that the Porsche warranty on transfer cases had been extended to 7 years in total. Our intrepid reporter (ok— me!) asked Scott Murley of Porsche Centre Victoria about this and Scott confirmed that it is now the case (excuse the pun!). Lastly, any new Club members should create a free MotorsportReg.com account immediately so they can get complete details / register for our events. We use MSR to ease our administrative workload and as a volunteer driven Club, it all helps! Everybody else, load up a photo of yourself and your car on MSR too.

In the Zone Ten of the 145 Regions in PCA are located in Zone 6. Over 100 members from our Zone had signed up to attend the Porsche Parade in Palm Springs this year, which we all know was cancelled because of COVID. It would have been the 20th Parade for Linda and me in our 30 years of PCA membership. For those of you who haven't been to a Parade, it is a week-long celebration with many events and several award banquets. Linda was the Parade Banquet Chair for eight years, so the banquets are a big part of our Parades. The banquets include award presentations for the events at the Parade and also National Awards. I am especially proud to watch the presentations to Zone 6 members and missed that special time this year. PCA's Executive Council and Staff tried to create a virtual celebration to replicate some of what takes place at the Parade banquets with a video Awards Ceremony. The video aired August 19, but can still be viewed at pca.org. It's a great program to watch, especially while we're spending so much time at home these days. Linda and I cheered from the couch as we watched honors go to Pacific Northwest and Oregon Regions for their newsletters, Canada West for Region of the Year and Silver Sage for Community Service. None of our regions took first place and I'll let you watch the video to see where they placed, but Ron Harris of the Inland Northwest Region was honored as the Enthusiast of the Year! He's the latest of several Zone 6 members to have received that award. With 145 regions and over 100,000 members eligible for these awards the competition is fierce, so I hope you can appreciate the fantastic job that our volunteers do in our Zone. Please extend them your thanks as well as your congratulations. I hope to see you again soon in the Zone.

40 years in PCA! My first initiation to the Porsche family began in Nanaimo in the early 1970's. At that time a local Doctor owned an orange 911S Targa, which stood out quite noticeably. In 1972 I began looking for a European sports car and tried MG, Triumph and Porsche. In September 1972, I purchased a new orange 1972 Porsche 914 1.7 litre from Harrison Volkswagen, Nanaimo for the total purchase price of $5,194.50. In the fall of 1973 I took a road trip back to the family farm in Saskatchewan with the 914 and then onto Ontario with the final destination of Niagara Falls. During this trip I had the 10,000 mile service completed in Niagara Falls and continued sight seeing. One eventful stop occurred in the parking lot just above the Falls. When I returned to the car, someone had backed into the driver door, caved it in and then drove off. As a result, the only access was through the passenger door, crawling over a high centre console and into the driver seat. I was a little more nimble during that period of my life. With holidays nearing an end, I could not wait for bodywork to be done. Back to Peninsula Volkswagen. At that time the only Porsche they had was an Olympic blue 914 2.0

litre. This vehicle had the appearance group and the performance package with Fuchs wheels, centre console, gauges and the 2 litre which was a nice upgrade from the 1972 1.7. I proceeded with the insurance claim and the trade was made on the 6th October, 1973. On the return, I stopped at the family farm, with a different vehicle, to the surprise of all and then back to Nanaimo. In 1975 I moved to Langley and had the 914 serviced at Guildford Motors, Surrey, during my visits to Guildford Motors I always admired 911's. As a regular member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, one of my postings was on the British Columbia Commercial Auto Theft Section. During one auto theft ring investigation we seized several stolen vehicles from California including a 1978 Porsche 911 Coupe. After the court case, the manager of the southern automobile insurance association asked if I could drive the 911 down to California. After this drive I was hooked on a 911. In June of 1985, I purchased a 1980 Guards Red 911SC Coupe through Mercedes Benz Vancouver with just over 44,000 kms. This vehicle was originally sold by Guildford Motors, Surrey. I joined the Porsche Club of America, Canada West Region in June, 1980. In March, 1989 I was transferred to Regina and became a member of Nord Stern Region, (Minnesota,

Car Guy - Irwin Axness He is quiet, but one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, and always there to lend a helping hand. If he happens to be behind you in that Olympic Blue 914, he is like glue on your tail. It may only be 2.0 liters but Irwin drives it like a GT3. Wonder if it is from all those years driving the police cruiser? I have known Irwin for about 10 years; he is a great guy and good friend. For his upcoming 40th year anniversary with PCA we asked him to write a few words about himself and his involvement with Porsches and PCA. Knowing how modest Irwin is, I thought I would add a few words and some great pictures. This is a picture of Irwin’s stable of cars, with guest visit from super rock star Brad Blaney who just happened to drop by. A tour of Irwin’s garage proves he is a car lover of all shapes sizes and makes and models. On the top of the lift is a 1973 Porsche 914 2.0 litre which was purchased new in Niagara Falls and is equipped with the appearance and performance package. It is Olympic blue and has 63,475 original miles. Bottom of the lift is a 1980 Porsche 911SC Coupe Guards Red with 133,300 original miles. His other hidden treasurer is a 1959 Oldsmobile 98 convertible with a 394 ci V8. Irwin says “It has all options to my knowledge with the exception of air conditioning and

electric no drafts. I have done a frame-off restoration and it has 8,124 miles since the restoration. I installed a star fire camshaft and changed the front brakes to disc. The convertible top is white with a white trunk lid and white spears. The rest of the car is red. This vehicle was purchased in Saskatchewan. It was outside partially covered with a tarp. . It has an automatic transmission, dual exhaust, power steering/brakes/top/antenna/windows/6 way power bench seat, super deluxe wonder bar radio, transportable radio, autronic eye which dims headlights for oncoming traffic. It has engine/trunk/glove box and interior courtesy lights. Front seat belts were located which would have been a dealer installed option available. It has wide whitewalls and factory spinner hubcaps. The interior was completely re-done with red/white and black vinyl as per the original pattern” I would like to congratulate Irwin Axness on his 40 year membership with PCA. It is great to know you Irwin.

It is with great sadness that we send our condolences to Malcolm Baster and family, on the death of his wife Lucille, a long time Club member. Both Malcolm and Lucille were active in the Club in the past and had even organized events. I know some of us haven’t been around long enough to meet Malcolm and Lucille but I can say that on the few times I had the opportunity, they were definitely enthusiasts and had lots of good stories. They are pictured (below) with their Enthusiasts of the Year award and (right) at a 2019 fall event.

Steve asked for a write up on Chemainus – Blue Grouse drive so I wrote back: “Porsches, Berries, Wine”. Guess he wanted something with a bit more information? Well here goes. First I would like to thank Greig Christian for his contribution on planning and scouting this great drive. I know in our previous conversations and due to COVID-19, this drive had gone through many changes to the route and venues. We all met in Chemainus at Water Wheel Park, not a sunny day but still top down weather. No rain on our drive, but heading home later that day we had encountered some light showers. We had 39 members and 23 vehicles meet at 9:45am for a brief Drivers’ Meeting and divide into two groups before we set off on our drive. Greig had laid out and provided us with Google Maps link complete with turn by turn directions that took us from Waterwheel Park in Chemainus, past Westholme Tea Company, through Maple Bay, through Cowichan Bay past the marina, then to our first stop at the Saskatoon Berry Farm in Cobble Hill.

South Island Saskatoons / Saskatoon Berry Farm We were all pleasantly pleased with this stop and the walk around the South Island Saskatoons / Saskatoon Berry Farm. It is a seven acre Saskatoon berry orchard located in Cobble Hill. I think it is probably the largest dedicated Saskatoon berry farm in BC. It is estimated to have approximately 7200 trees in all and is an absolutely beautiful piece of VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

SEPTEMBER 2020 Page 13

property. I know I was very pleased to purchase the Saskatoon tarts, scones, pies and jams, all of which were delicious! I can see a return visit to South Island Saskatoons in my future. After a Saskatoon Berry tart, it was on the road again for a drive around Cherry Point. Past Cherry Point Estate Winery, crossing Hwy 1, past Cowichan station, to the Historic Fairbridge Chapel for a picture. Fairbridge Farm Chapel “The Fairbridge Farm Chapel is a two-storey and half basement wood frame Arts and

Crafts style chapel with red cedar shingles, white stucco façade, and a two-storey clock turret. It is located in the historic Fairbridge Farm park-style subdivision, in Cowichan Station, British Columbia. It is one of two historic buildings located on this large lot. The Fairbridge Farm Chapel was built in 1939 and openedin 1940 on the Prince of Wales Fairbridge Farm School in the Cowichan Valley. The Fairbridge Society, a philanthropic society famous for its emigration scheme, built only this one farm school in Canada. As such, the chapel’s association with the Fairbridge Society is of great pride to the area. The most defining heritage value comes from the historic integrity of the building. The exterior and interior materials are all original dating to the time of construction. These historic materials include the shingles, floors, timber frame, and windows. The original elements of the chapel still remain in good condition, including the pews and interior and exterior pulpits.”

Then back onto Koksilah Rd. right onto Lakeside Rd. to the Blue Grouse estate Winery. Blue Grouse Estate Winery Blue Grouse Estate is 65 acres of vineyard, winery, guest house (Grouse House) and wine tasting room. It was indicated that this was the second oldest winery established on Vancouver Island. “Our architect found inspiration for the design of our Tasting Room from the shape of

our namesake, the Blue Grouse. The lovely curve of the grouse’s head and neck inspired the roofline and inside a curved ceiling reminds visitors of a grouse’s belly. The entrance highlights a beautiful shade of blue from the grouse’s tail feathers.”

The philosophy of the Blue Grouse Estate Winery is ‘We want you to remember us because you were at a beautiful place, on a beautiful day (rain or shine), with people you love – an experience we hope to perfect with just the right wine.’ Sounds like something that could match: "It's not just the cars, it's the people" VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

SEPTEMBER 2020 Page 14

We were treated to wine tasting of four different wines and a great lunch. This picturesque location and vineyard was a beautiful ending to our drive and event.

Thanks to Wyman Lee for some of his great pictures of this event. Also, thanks to everyone who attended this event and to Greig Christian for his help in organizing our route and excellent choice in establishments to visit. Hope everyone enjoyed the drive and visits, looking forward to seeing everyone on our next VIR drive. Take care.

August 16th, a sparkling Sunday started with coffee and a treat at Drumroaster Coffee (241400 Cowichan Bay Road at Valley View Centre) spirits were up with the promise of a true summer day ahead. Gawking at all and the tops down (…on the cars!) and catching-up with folks we haven’t seen for a while the morning was relaxed and at-ease. With sunglasses affixed and air conditioning ON we were off! The first cruise took us through Cowichan Bay and to our first stop at Valley Cider (7661 Mays Road). If you haven’t been there it is recommended by this author that you visit. Their branding includes phrasing like this “Welcome to simply different” “Taste well crafted”. They create handcrafted farm-to-bottle cider that celebrates the apple’s natural evolution and potential. In anticipation of your visit prepare to have your taste buds tickled as you taste their selection of uniquely flavoured non-alcoholic sodas and alcoholic apple ciders. YUM. The next leg of the cruise took us over meandering, curvy country roads with not much traffic and through some heavily wooded areas that provided brief solace in the shade as we followed the Cowichan River. The cruise took us past Ampersand Distilling Company (4077 Lanchaster Road) to show participants how to find them for a future visit; their hours of operation are listed on their website. Their gin (Ampersand) is our favourite. They won the Gold Medal – World Gin Awards 2020, in February this year! Being a tiny facility and in the midst of a pandemic we were not able to stop there. Safety First! At last the cruise ended at our house for a lunch prepared by Chef Dean. With two diligent young assistants in Porsche hats, masks and gloves – Dean and the boys plated up the lunch which participants picked up from the outdoor kitchen and people spread out to physically distance in the yard to enjoy the offered fare. It all topped off with a birthday cake… Happy Birthday Betty Choy! As the blistering heat of the afternoon set-in everyone slowly peeled away. Dean and I had a great day – and hope the participants enjoyed the experience too! Until next time,

As club activities are starting up again, preparations for the Fall Rally have ramped up. The route is finalised and timing is being checked. A lunch stop is part of the rally and a restaurant has been “signed up” with all the necessary COVID precautions. The event starts and ends in Duncan and will likely take most of the day – Sunday 27 September. At this stage we have just over half dozen entries and there is space for more. Sign up here on MSR: Fall Time, Speed, Distance (TSD) Rally. The cost is $40 per car. Looking ahead, the Classic Car Rally for early September is fully booked and the Pacific Forrest Rally was cancelled. We are waiting to hear about the Totem Rally (November) and Big White Winter Rally (December). As usual any comments, feedback or suggestions are welcome.

I recently asked Steve Ward, the Service Advisor at Porsche Centre Victoria on who/what they recommend for removing a door ding that my Macan received. It was not that big, about 1/2 inch, but it was just under a bend in the passenger’s side and it also had a sharp indent at 7 o’clock from that mark too. Steve said they call Dentex, a Victoria company and Steve would be happy to organize it and the work would be done at PCV too. Before — actually 2 dings A few days later, my car was in the area between service reception and the workshop at PCV, and Ryan from Dentex arrived to perform the fix. He didn’t mind me asking dumb questions (I am not a car techie!) and taking photos while he performed his magic on the dent.

If you are one for fast results and have little patience, then working in the dent removal business is not for you believe me! From start to finish, it was around 1½ hours but he may have been faster if I was not there hassling him. Ryan said that there are a few ways to get inside the panel to work on it, e.g. from the window or via drain holes, but because of the position of my dent he had to drill a small hole in the door where it met the B pillar and it would be plugged and sealed afterwards. The main tool he used, surprisingly had a pointed end (see picture left), which Ryan slid into the door hole and manipulated slowly, stopping every minute or so to inspect the progress, then using a rubber point on the outside of the door. This went on, alternating between gentle pressure on the pointed tool and then lightly hammering the rubber point (see pic overleaf). When he and I were happy that the dent had gone, he buffed up the paintwork, sealed and plugged the hole and that was it! I have included before and after pics overleaf. Ryan, Colin (the owner), Jeff and Shawn work from their Victoria location and Mike and Cole work any jobs Duncan and northwards.

VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

SEPTEMBER 2020 Page 28

Ryan loves working on Porsches, Mercedes and Audis because of the metal and paint quality, he said if my damage had been on a Chrysler it would not have come out! You can just about see the original damage in my first picture and it was certainly apparent (and really annoying to say the least), but believe me, the end result was amazing, a first class job, which is why Porsche Centre Victoria use Dentex I suspect!

Restore it! I have not found a better automotive leather upholstery than Porsche’s; at least not better in longevity and wear. Having said that, after having owned my car for 17 years and after having rested my big, fat behind on the driver’s seat for over one quarter of a million miles (250,000) the leather was, to say the least, a bit tired. Going the route of re-upholstering with new leather would have cost several thousand dollars and, as usual I wanted to keep it on a small budget. Replacing the seats was an option. One can purchase used seats from any Porsche dismantler at relatively affordable prices, but then one must deal with shipping, removing, installing, etc. Most of the time these used seats are also somewhat tired, especially on the driver’s left bolster which takes the most abuse when one gets in and out of the vehicle. Also, because I had had my vehicle for so long I though that a change in scenery would be welcomed. I had ordered my car in Graphite Grey with the full leather interior and with some carbon fibre accents, such as the steering wheel, the shifter and the handbrake. So when I took a good look at my interior I knew I wanted some change. I did some research and found several places that sold leather restoration products. After calling them and speaking with the customer service departments I decided on LeatherMagic.com.

I ordered some materials: a Restoration Kit for Graphite Grey leather (yes, they have Porsche interior colors by their actual name) and a (black) Dye Kit for leather. I have also used Leatherique.com products as well. When the kit arrived, I followed the instructions, which were to clean and prep the leather. You can clean leather seats with warm water and mild soap and a sponge. You’ll be surprised at how much dirt comes out. Do this several times rubbing gently. Finish with a clean water rinse with a towel to remove any soap remnants. VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

SEPTEMBER 2020 Page 36

Once the seats have dried you can apply the supplied leather-prep solution. If the leather is creased or shows cracks you can sand it down to correct the imperfection and then the new dye is applied. The correct grit sandpaper is provided in the kit. The dye can be applied with either a soft-sponge brush or using their aerosol adapter that allows you to spray-on the new dye for a very uniform finish. Because I wanted to change some of the leather color I had to do some masking as well. It really is quite simple to update your Porsche’s interior whether it’s leather or vinyl. There are also products to re-dye faded carpets and other cloth material. Don’t be afraid to do it yourself!
