S

eptember was another busy month, with two drives and a TSD rally completed. We have one more drive planned for Sunday, October 4th for new members and it filled up very fast with eighteen new members registered. As with all our previous events, the demand exceeded our capacity due to COVID-19 health restrictions.

Thanks again to all the organizers and volunteers for their efforts in making all the events a big success. I want to especially thank all the participants, who followed all the COVID -19 protocols to ensure that we could continue to get together, enjoy driving our cars and socialize. Last month, I mentioned our year-end was August 31st and we have now scheduled our AGM via Zoom at 7pm on Tuesday, October 27th. Attendance will be by registration only via MotorsportReg.com October 1st onwards and I hope you will join us. With some great door prizes to give away to ‘attendees’, the chances of being a winner are quite high. The full agenda and reports can be found in this issue of the Porscher.

all are willing to serve for another year. As part of the AGM process, we are required to ask for other nominations for board positions and if any members have resolutions to amend our bylaws, then these are considered at the AGM. Please submit any nominations or resolutions to me. 2021 marks our 25th anniversary as a Club and we are planning to offer an even greater number of drives and social events to celebrate this milestone. I’m happy to report that a number of people have stepped up to volunteer and assist in making this happen. Of course, more help is always appreciated and we are happy to add more members and/or their associates to the planning committee. Finally, I want to thank all of the board members and chairs that make up our executive team. Without them, none of what we do would be possible. As they say, “it’s not just the cars, it’s the people”. Please take care and stay safe.

The AGM marks the end of the term for the President current board, so we must elect a new board for 2021. I surveyed the current board and

I

f you are planning to attend our AGM this year on October 27th, as Tim says above, it will be a virtual meeting held via Zoom which is available on all platforms including phones and tablets. As Zoom seem to update their software regularly, please ensure your copy of Zoom is current before the meeting to save time trying to update it when you need it!

If you have not used Zoom before, you do not need to create an account, here is a short video on YouTube to get started, although there is not much to learn really. The AGM information package is included in this issue.

I Miss My Canadian Friends One of my "duties" as Zone Rep is to visit each of the ten regions in Zone 6 every year. When I started I asked my predecessor, Tim Hagner, for recommendations and the first thing he said was "Black Rock". We got registered and enjoyed the adventure getting over to the west side of Vancouver Island. We had a great time with our fun-loving Canadians at one of the most picturesque resorts I've seen.

Our next attempt was not successful. We realized just north of Seattle that we had forgotten our passports. There was no way to get them from Boise in time, so we had to cancel our trip to Sun Peaks. The Zone 6 Grand Tour took us all across British Columbia on some of the most beautiful Porsche roads imaginable. We remembered the passports for the Zone Tour and even went back for Whistler Weekend last year, an event that I had been wanting to attend since it started. I'm glad we were able to make it. This year we had our Region Presidents' meeting in Victoria in March, just before the pandemic started. It's such a beautiful city and the hospitality of the Vancouver Island Region was exceptional. The border was closed shortly after that and has remained closed since. We had signed up for Black Rock and hoped to get in on the Sun Peaks tour, but obviously had to cancel. I think I need my British Columbia fix, but may have to wait until next year unless we receive a pleasant surprise this fall. I made it as far as Blaine, Washington for a small family affair, but that didn't quite do it. Email communications have their place, but nothing takes the place of socializing in person, especially over food and drink. I just returned from a tour with the Silver Sage Region and others from surrounding regions over to Yellowstone, the Beartooth Highway and Chief Joseph down to Jackson, Wyoming. It's tough, but possible, to keep our social distance and still be social, but I look forward to times when I can be face-to-face with you again. I feel compelled to tell my stories about those "10 packs" of Molson they had in Canada back in the 80s and the bear on the golf course at Sun Peaks whenever I get together with my Canadian friends. Stay safe so we can socialize properly soon.

Port Alberni Vintage Locomotive Visit & Drive Our drive started in Parksville at Serious Coffee with 27 participants and 20 vehicles. After a quick coffee and a driver meeting we broke up into two groups of 10 vehicles to comply with COVID19 restrictions. A scenic drive through Parksville and Qualicum started our journey to Port Alberni. Our first stop was at the Roundhouse in Port Alberni for group A, with group B continuing on to the Industrial Heritage Centre. Our guided tour at the Roundhouse was provided by the volunteer Boilermakers.

VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

OCTOBER 2020 Page 11

Their current projects include the restoration on the boiler repair of the No. 7, 1929 Baldwin locomotive. A CN rail car Caboose, several vintage locomotives and other assorted rail cars being restored were quite interesting to view. On to the next stop, the Industrial Heritage Centre, driving by the old Port Alberni Train Station. At the Industrial Heritage Centre a guided tour included restored heavy equipment used in the Port Alberni area for logging.

We also saw vintage fire engines and various assorted trucks. And, for something completely different, a 1928 REID oilfield engine for sale. Both groups met at Boston Pizza for lunch, on the well spaced private outdoor patio. Then a drive, led by Gary Glover, continued through Port Alberni, around Sproat Lake, returning to Boston Pizza Parking lot. This was the end of another lovely Porsche drive.

The final President’s Breakfast Drive of the year was held on Saturday, August 29th in the Comox Valley. After breakfast at Crown Isle Resort in Courtenay, 22 cars and 39 members hit the back roads before heading up to Mount Washington, where we had dedicated parking at the Alpine Lodge. It was a little cool and windy at the top, but with a clear, sunny sky the views were amazing! Then, we headed down the mountain for more back-road driving in the Comox Valley before ending up at 40 Knots Winery, where we had lunch and enjoyed tasting the wine. Thanks to Trevor, Sonia, and Wendy for organizing the drive and meals. Trevor's very precise driving instructions included the history of the roads and places we passed, as well as the high school that Kim Cattrell (Samantha in ‘Sex in the City’) graduated from in 1972 and the Beaufort Winery, owned by James Cameron (director of the Terminator, Titanic and Avatar movies). We were all very impressed. Also, we thank Porsche Centre Victoria and Porsche Canada for donating the prizes and volunteer appreciation gifts for this drive.

RS cars continued from previous article…. Porsche now targeted the FIA Group 4 GT class, in doing so the 911 2.7 RS was developed into a dedicated race Car; the 2.8 RSR. Of the 1,580 2.7 RS cars built only 55 were diverted to Porsche’s race shop Werk 1 for conversion to the 2.8 RSR. Distinguishing features included the much larger fender flares (the widest allowed by

the rules) to accommodate the massive 9” front and 11” rear Fuchs wheels. The front air dam was redesigned and now housed a large external oil cooler. Remarkably the RSR was almost 140 pounds lighter than the 2.7 RS. This was no easy task as it also had to be strengthened in three key

tons/cylinders increasing the displacement to 2,806cc. A compression ratio of 10.3 :1 was obtained and the motor was also fitted with larger valves (valve timing was the same as the 906), twin plug ignition and lightened internal components. With ‘high butterfly’ fuel injection the 2.8 produced 300 horsepower at 8,000 rpm. This was coupled with a specifically designed 5-speed gearbox fitted with limited slip differential. Final assembly was performed at Werks 1 and all cars were delivered “Race Ready” including a roll cage, race seat, safety harness, fire suppression system and the electrical cut off switch; as required by the regulations. Success followed immediately in 1973 with a win at the first Championship of Makes race. By the end of the season the RSR had won six of the nine rounds in this championship. Further wins followed at the Daytona 24 Hour, the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Targa Florio. The RSR was now dominating GT racing. For 1974 Porsche continues the development of the RSR and it’s derivatives. More to come!

Porsche Parts You’re going to undertake a service or repair project on your Porsche. You do the research, look at YouTube videos and DIY guides and you’re confident that you can tackle it. Now you need to get the parts.

Question is, do you go with genuine Porsche parts, OEM parts or aftermarket parts? And, what are the differences, if any between them? Genuine Porsche Parts These parts can be purchased at any Porsche dealer and/or through Porsche’s distribution network. You can tell that it is a genuine part because it will be offered in its original Porsche packaging, showing the Porsche part number and with identification labels. Any genuine Porsche part has gone through Porsche’s quality control system to assure that they deliver performance exactly as what the factory intended. Most of the time, when you purchase a genuine Porsche replacement part it will be identical to the one installed at the factory but not always. If the part has been revised it will have a newer version number where the last 2 digits of the part number changes upward by one digit for every revision. Also in some cases the new revised part will be superseded by a new part which may be made of a different material and could be slightly different as the original part, but it will fit and function as intended.

VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

OCTOBER 2020 Page 29

OEM Parts

Original Equipment Manufacturer is a part that has been manufactured by one of Porsche’s official parts suppliers. Just like most automobile manufacturers, Porsche does not make all of the parts that go on their cars. They contract with hundreds or thousands of suppliers which have been rigorously vetted to produce exactly what the factory requires. As an example, Porsche uses Brembo (Italian manufacturer) as an OEM supplier of brake parts. Brembo makes brake calipers, rotors and pads for specific Porsche models. If you purchase a genuine Porsche brake part it could have been made by Brembo, but would be packaged under the Porsche brand as a genuine part. That same part could also be sold, without the Porsche packaging or part number, directly by Brembo or one of its distributors. The same would apply to other OEM suppliers, such as Bosch (electronics, sensors, injectors, etc.), Sachs (clutch kits), Bilstein (suspension), Lemforder (mounts), etc., etc. Aftermarket Parts Aftermarket doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s an inferior quality part. In some cases, aftermarket parts can be an improvement on an original part, such as specialized pistons, rods and valves which can be made lighter and stronger than the originals. In other cases we see many aftermarket parts that are junk parts, made cheaply and sold cheaply. We see water pumps, Air/Oil separators, Mass Airflow Sensors, etc. which fall into this category. I had always wondered why it was that I could purchase a part such as a Mass Airflow Sensor as an aftermarket part with the Porsche part number but sold at 50% of the dealer’s price for the equivalent genuine version. VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

OCTOBER 2020 Page 30

A couple of years ago I had the chance to speak with several folks from the factory who explained it to me this way: When Porsche orders a batch of parts from one of its OEM suppliers, they request a specific number of them. The manufacturer needs to make a larger amount than what Porsche ordered because they know that the parts will be tested and a number of them will not be acceptable to the factory. Those parts that are not accepted are returned to the manufacturer and then can then be sold as aftermarket, although most are offered as OEM parts (which they are). If a particular part is tested and the acceptable range is 1.0 – 1.5 volts, anything that is outside those values is rejected. The part could have shown 0.999 volts or 1.501 volts which would be a pretty darn good part or it could have read 0.5 or 2.0 volts which would not allow it to perform its function properly, yet the are both sold as the same part by the OEM supplier. You take a risk if you purchase that way. Some people say that they will buy two parts and have a spare in case the first one fails, but some of those parts can actually cause damage to the vehicle, such as a crankshaft or camshaft position sensor and some could actually hurt you, such as with a faulty ABS or brake component. President’s Annual Report 2020 At our last AGM, a large number of new members were voted in to join the executive team and after being the treasurer for a number of years previously, this was my first year as president. As we worked together through our initial learning curve and getting to know each other to leverage strengths, everyone maintained their enthusiasm and I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish this year, despite the unexpected challenges. We finished up 2019 with the popular, annual Port Renfrew run but unfortunately, we had to cancel our Autocross and Chili Challenge due to low entries and wet weather.

In March, we hosted the Zone 6 Presidents’ Meeting at the Grand Pacific hotel in Victoria. It was attended by all ten regions in our zone and was led by our Zone 6 representative, Mark Prusynski, who travelled from Boise, Idaho. The executive was busy planning for a lot of events for 2020, when we were hit by the pandemic shutdown and the restriction on activities that lasted until June. It was disappointing that we had to cancel our Black Rock multi-day event, but we are hopeful that it will run again in 2021. Once the restrictions eased, we started holding drives and social gatherings again within the health official restrictions and guidelines. The 14 drives, organized in all areas of Vancouver Island, proved to be very popular. We also managed to hold a track day at Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit and a TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) Rally. Almost all events were full and most of the drives had waiting lists. With continuing COVID-19 restrictions and what appears to be a lack of interest in autocross events by our members, the Autocross and Chili Challenge was not scheduled this year. Looking ahead, 2021 marks our 25th anniversary as a Club and a planning committee has been formed to plan events to celebrate this important milestone. There’s a lot to look forward to next year, with new anniversary events added to the Club’s social calendar. Finally, I want to thank all of the Executive team, who do so much to make the Club a success and ensure the members can enjoy their cars and meet their fellow members.

Vice President’s Annual Report 2020 This past year was my first as Vice President. While seeming quiet at first because of COVID, it was a productive one behind the scenes. My main focus this year was to ensure that the Club’s strategic planning commitments for the year were kept in sight and work undertaken as resources allowed. My personal goal for the year was to plan and lead a drive, as I had not done so previously and since driving tours are, in my view, the heart of what we do as a Club, I thought it was important for me to gain that experience. Two of the main strategic planning commitments for 2020 were to begin a website update process and to look at Club communications. Karl Hoener stepped up to lead the web update team and to help the Board identify what they wanted and needed in a web site. I sit on the web team and act as liaison to the Board. So far, the team and the Club Executive have reviewed current content, designed a new content structure, and created a new look for the site. In order to gain Club members’ thoughts on Club communications, as well as what they want to see in the updated web site, I sent out a survey to all members in March. I provided the results to the web team and the Board and posted them on the Club web site. Several suggestions will be addressed through the web update and we hope to implement another this winter, now that the Club has a Zoom account that supports webinars. Early this year, I supported the President in hosting the Zone 6 Presidents’ Meeting by organizing evening get-togethers for participants and VIR members. I was pleased and fortunate to be able to attend, meet other Region Presidents and a few Vice Presidents and gain an insight into the purpose and value of these meetings. In July, I led a drive around the Saanich Peninsula, trying out a mid-morning start time, and the new COVID rules. All went well, and I came away with a better sense of the layers of care, caution and creativity that go into staying safe while having fun, together and on the road. I have enjoyed this past year of working with the rest of the Board and Chairs and serving Region members as Vice President

Treasurer’s Annual Report 2020 I became Treasurer immediately following last year’s AGM, as the position was vacant. I transferred into the Vancouver Island Region from the Wildrose Region in 2019. Despite the fact that most of our spring and early summer events were cancelled, the Club experienced a rather typical fiscal year as most of these events were budgeted at close to breakeven. Our track day cost more than anticipated due to uncertainty related to health and safety measures causing an unavoidable rescheduling. I am pleased to report that the Club is in a secure financial position going into our 25th anniversary year. The Club began the fiscal year with $31,017 in cash which increased to $37,028 as at August 31, 2020. The Club’s Regional Refunds from PCA remained strong and the US Dollar exchange rate was again a bonus this year. Even though the Club had a challenging year planning events, most of our advertisers remained and Porscher Advertising Revenue was constant. Steve Fairbrother, our award-winning Porscher Newsletter Chair, brought forward an idea to initiate some form of scholarship, bursary or grant that the Club would award annually to Vancouver Island youth. The Executive decided to set aside ten percent of Porscher advertising revenue from 2020 onward to develop this fund. The fund is currently unrestricted and the balance is $801. It is anticipated that some sort of member competition will be held in future years to award the Youth Development Fund. The “Statement of Financial Position” and “Statement of Activities” are attached. I look forward to seeing many of you at the coming 25th year celebrations.

Up Island Director’s Annual Report 2020 Thank you, Paul Atterton VERY much for taking over the Up Island position for 2018/2019, while I was getting my new life in order, after the loss of my Gary, November 21, 2018. Having enjoyed very much being back in the saddle for this past year, I would be happy to put my name forward for 2020/2021. I started the Up Island Cars & Coffee in 2014 and have enjoyed each event. We meet the 2nd Saturday of the month, 10am—noon, Crown Isle Plaza, parking lot across from Starbucks. Of course ANY members wherever they live, are most welcome to attend. We usually have good representation from the Comox Valley, Campbell River, Qualicum & Parksville. The location has worked well and we frequently have people drop in, while shopping in the Plaza. I hosted a Christmas luncheon at Crown Isle Resort with a Secret Santa gift exchange, which was very well received and everyone was pleased with their gift from Santa! I was pleased to work with Tim, and our Treasurer Trevor Ross on the President’s Breakfast Drive, Comox Valley, September 29. We started with breakfast at Crown Isle Resort, drive to Mt. Washington Alpine Resort (www.mountwashington.ca). Then a lovely drive on some country roads, that even most locals would not be aware, ending at 40 Knots Winery (www.40knotswinery.com). The interpretive trail is designed for an easy 20-30 minute stroll and Tim commented he would like to go back. I am pleased to be able to attend our monthly meetings, now via Zoom. I was able to confirm at our last meeting, going back to Up Island, rather than North Island. It has been decided to shut down the Goodie Store, however I am working on an online auction for the remaining items, plus other goodies, that were gifted to us by Porsche Centre Victoria. I also have items donated by Dan Ryan, a past member. This will be a Porsches Helping Pets event, the third I have organized with all proceeds going to the BC-SPCA. With Christmas just around the corner, I think the timing is good. If you purchase an item, they will be distributed via our 3 Cars & Coffee locations. I also have our lovely VIR pins, $5 at the monthly Up Island Cars & Coffee, or if that is not convenient, I can mail to you. Look forward to seeing you again, or meeting you for the first time at a future event. I will be the one driving my Rainforest Green Metallic, 2002 Boxster, built in Uusikhupunki, Finland.

Mid-Island Director’s Annual Report 2020 The closure of the NoXcuses Café forced our coffee group to relocate to Serious Coffee in Parksville every Sunday morning at 10am. At this point, our gatherings have been outside in the parking lot to comply with social distancing. A big disappointment this year was the cancelation of the 2020 Black Rock event due to COVID restrictions on gathering sizes of 50 or over. Our first 2020 Mid Island event was Fairwinds Golf Club June Dinner & Drive at Fairwinds Golf Course. This event started off to be an outside picnic dinner with take-out food available from Fairwinds, but as June rolled around and restrictions changed we were able to have a sit-down dinner inside Fairwinds banquet room, with four people to a table. We completed this event with a picturesque drive lead by David Goede from Fairwinds Golf Club, around the Nanoose area, Parksville, Qualicum, Errington and back to Qualicum Beach. Weather was splendid for an evening drive. Next was Chemainus - July’s Blue Grouse Winery–Drive, starting at Chemainus Water Wheel Park led by Greig Christian who took us through Chemainus to the Westholme Tea Company on Richards Trail then to Maple Bay and onto Cowichan Bay past the marina and to the Saskatoon Berry Farm in Cobble Hill. After some tasting and buying of Saskatoon Berry products, we drove past the Cherry Point Estate Winery, past Cowichan Station, passing the Historic Fairbridge Chapel, and on to our final stop at Blue Grouse Estate Winery. We were treated to a delicious lunch choices of charcuterie, cheese boards or vegan board along with optional tasting of a few wine samples from the Blue Grouse Winery. Weather had cooperated for a great drive and tour. The third event was Port Alberni Vintage Locomotive Visit & Drive, in August. Please see the review in this issue for details and pictures. Planned Events (after writing this report): September 20th Lunch & Drive - Lunch Fairwinds Golf Club Drive September 26th Gold River Run - a charity event donating to Gold River Food Bank Other events coming this fall, winter and spring will be more drives, movie nights and tech nights. I would like to thank all the board members for their hard work in making VIR such a great chapter of PCA, with a positive future. Thanks to all of you for your support throughout the past year, it has been a pleasure. I am looking forward to an exciting year.

South Island Director’s Annual Report 2020 The first event held in the South Region was Ford vs. Ferrari at the IMAX. Seeing and hearing that movie on a six story screen was adrenalin fueled! In March, the world was hit rather suddenly with COVID19. The Vancouver Island Porsche Club did the responsible thing and suspended all events until the Health Officials provided guidelines to follow when holding events. Once we got the 'green flag' for event procedures we went full throttle. In June alone there were five drives throughout the Island. It started with the Spring Fling hosted by yours truly. Next was the first of three President Breakfast Drives and our Vice President Garth, organized a scenic drive on the Saanich Peninsula. South Island Cars and Coffee continues to be a popular gathering and is held every Sunday 9am at Eagle Creek Village where social distancing is in place. It’s been a pleasure working with the Board and a special thanks to all the members coming out to events. It’s wonderful to see our Porsche community support one another and continue to grow through this challenging year.

Secretary’s Annual Report 2020 It has been my pleasure to serve as Club Secretary over the last year. As they say, time flies by when you are having fun and I cannot believe how fast this past year has gone. While I miss the interaction of meeting in person with the Club Executive, it has been interesting to see how the Club seamlessly transitioned to conducting meetings and business using Zoom. The Club has been very productive and has embarked on many new and exciting initiatives in the last year as you will see from the other Executive Reports. I have had the privilege to meet many members at Cars & Coffee and various pre-COVID social events and I am very much looking forward to meeting more members during our 25th anniversary celebrations next year. I encourage members to contact the Club to see if they could use your help in organizing events for 2021.

Membership Chair’s Annual Report 2020 In spite of the challenges we have all seen in 2020 we have been very close to maintaining our membership numbers. VIR had a slow start to the year but has picked up some momentum in the recent months. At the end of August, VIR had 568 members consisting of 350 primary members 218 affiliate members I am new to my role and have maintained a number of activities over the course of the year to raise awareness of the Club, continue to attract new members and retain current ones. Provided all new members with VIR name badge and decal for their car. Sent welcome emails to all new members. Recognized milestone anniversaries in the Membership News section in Porscher. Worked with PCA National to address member issues as needed.

Newsletter Editor’s Annual Report 2020 As Newsletter Editor I performed the following: Sought new newsletter advertisers and billed them to receive newsletter revenue over $8,000 Spent little money on the newsletter, e.g. one archive print per issue. Created submissions to PCA for Public Service Awards, Panorama pieces (“From The Regions” and “Making A Difference”) and the Newsletter Award Supported event organisers by creating event ‘adverts’ in Porscher Many thanks to Villamar Construction and Jason Good Cabinets who continued to place adverts with us throughout COVID19. They support us, please support them, along with all our other advertisers! As MSR administrator, I performed the following: Liaised between the Club and MSR on support issues and testing new MSR features Cloned the previous year’s events and configured them for the organisers Charged event attendees without the Club handling credit cards etc Provided reports on MSR events for Executive & organisers where required Provided guidance to those organisers who wanted to create their events Other: Black Rock 2020 preparation – created posters, obtained sponsors, auction items etc Created ‘Join the PCA’ style business cards where required

Rally Chair’s Annual Report 2020 We were set to follow our previous year's rally events and had two dates set for Spring and Fall Rally respectively. During early February I took part in the Thunderbird Rally - the annual BC winter bash. A respectable 23 entries faced the snow and we had great conditions. There were only 2 entries in the Historic class: a Corolla GT-S and our 944. In the end we were somewhat down the field, unfortunately we maxed out on one stage, but improved our final score with some time declarations. It's the first time I tried that and it adds another dimension and the need to keep track of actual times. This was hopefully the last event in this car... progress on the new rally car is slow..... still hoping to have it ready for November. Then everything came to a grinding halt. All Club events were cancelled and so was the Spring Thaw Classic Car Rally. Towards the middle of the year mails started circulating again and I have just come back from the Fall Classic which was held 11-13 September albeit with a limit of 20 entries. Unfortunately the beautiful BC countryside remained largely hidden by the smoke. At the time of writing I was busy with the final preparations for the Club Fall Rally. The route is ready and everything is set for the end of September. Here's hoping we can run a few more events in 2021.
