I
t’s been a busy month or so at the Fairbrother household what with the packing up to move from our house to a condo (but actually not downsizing), then the move itself and unpacking etc. After that, we were waiting the birth of grandson #2 and babysitting grandson #1 while that was going on. Phew! No, I am not going to show any baby pics here! Anyway, with COVID, there isn’t that much to do—apart from attending some of our 25th anniversary events that will be coming your way soon. Starting off with ‘25 Roads for 25 Years’ which is explained on another page by organisers Trevor and Sonia Ross. It sounds a really neat experience, especially for folk like Jenny and I who have not done that much travelling on some of the less used roads on the Island. Look for your 25 Roads ‘passport’ in the mail soon! There are less than 5 spaces left for our charity fund raising event ‘Black Rock’ as I write this, so assuming we are allowed to gather (in smallish numbers), then register via MotorSportReg.com—see the details page further inside here. Spring in Zone 6
On March 6 we held the last of four Region Presidents’ Meetings since I have been Zone 6 Rep. The purpose of these Presidents’ Meetings is to get all the presidents in the Zone together during the first quarter of the year to go over what is going on nationally and exchange ideas among each other. I recall worrying before my first meeting that I would face some reluctance from some of the ten presidents. Some Zone Reps had trouble with attendance at their meetings. My concern was unfounded. Our ten region presidents have been willing participants in all of the meetings and often brought other region officers to the meetings. Prior to our virtual meeting on March 6, we tried to rotate the meetings around the ten regions. Our host region would invite its region members to a dinner with the officers from all the regions, the Zone Rep and at least one member of the PCA Executive Council.
This year we missed the social interaction we’ve had in the past, but still had a great exchange of information and ideas. We shared how the regions coped with COVID and discussed plans for the future in the regions, Zone 6 and nationally. Our region officers so enjoyed each other and found the meeting so valuable that we agreed that we should have another meeting later in the year. In the future the next Zone Rep may have the first meeting in person and the second virtually so that we all can stay in touch and be updated on what’s going on in each of our regions and nationally. The second half of this year is looking to be so busy that we might have difficulty finding time for a second meeting. Spring is here and Porsche events are on the upswing. The big national events such as Treffen and Parade are still going and both Treffen Scottsdale and Parade attendance are at the maximum. The Treffen and Parade staffs are working hard to make sure the events are safe but fun. The second half of the year promises to be full of the region social events that we have been missing during the pandemic. I look forward to a busy 2021. See you in the Zone. It’s been a busy couple of months for me, adding content to some of the new areas of the new web site. One of the projects that just kept growing was the Awards page. At first, we were just going to carry over the Enthusiast of the Year award winners from the old site. Then we decided to add the President’s Award, the Rally Championship trophy and the Chili Challenge. Once I started looking for photos among the Exec, they told me about other awards that I had never heard of, but I expect many of you have. The Slalom Cup, the Concours Cup, and the People’s Choice award. These awards are all part of VIR’s history, and we have tried to give you a little bit of each trophy’s story. We have the names of all the winners, but we are short on pictures. If you have a picture of the presentation of one of the “faceless” awards, or of the winner from around the time of the award, I would very much appreciate it if you would scan or photograph it and send it to me at the email below. I will give it its rightful place on the appropriate page. Please also contact me if you have or know about an award that is not posted. This includes awards won by VIR, from PCA or other organizations. This project really emphasized for me that there is more to know about VIR’s past. If you are a bit of a historian and love digging around in records of the past, please do get in touch.

The new Vancouver Island Region website is up and running, ready for you to explore! Take pole position on your Porsche mouse pad and get ready for a thrilling drive! Tour through “About Us” and “Events”. Relive those great memories in the “Scrapbook”, see what’s new under “Newsletter” and make a shopping pit-stop in “Merchandise”.
Then, register for entrance to the “Member Area” and check out the Model Registry. Members who choose to enter a profile and information about their Porsche will have their name, model and picture of their car posted so that you and other members, can see who has what kind of car. It may even help to put faces to names, for those ok with adding their picture. This area is only accessible to VIRmembers who register with the site and only VIR VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
APRIL 2021 Page 12
members will be able to post. We hope this acts as a virtual clubhouse and enables con-
nections among members. Before you leave, be sure to check out the members-only “25 Roads” page under Events, for information about our special anniversary event “25 roads for 25 years”. To register with the site, click on “Member Log-in”. Click again on “Register here”. Then fill in the basic information form. If approved, you will receive an email telling you that you now have full access. If you have any trouble, please contact Karl@ComTech.ws. Many thanks go to Karl Hoener (right), who led this substantial pro-
ject. He guided the Executive team through development of the content framework and the design of the look and feel of the site. He then applied his considerable technological talent and a LOT of volunteer time, to making it better than the Executive ever imagined. Karl is keen on data-driven web applications, which his company, ComTech specializes in. The new website is an example of the use of that technology and ComTech now also hosts our website. Most of the Executive pitched in by adding content – writing copy, uploading events and articles, supplying photos, sharing historical knowledge and searching spare rooms and basements for awards and trophies from years past. We hope you like the new site! Find it at the usual address: virpca.org. Please feel free to let Tim or Karl know what you think. VIR Executive Team

Welcome to the 25 Roads for 25 Years Challenge! It’s our 25th anniversary and what better way to celebrate than to get behind the wheels of our Porsches and tour beautiful Vancouver Island. On behalf of the Club’s 25th Anniversary Committee, I’m excited to kick off a challenge to our members. We’ve come up with 25 roads that cover the Island from north to south and east to west. This is meant to be a fun, self-directed competition for members to drive the Island while complying with COVID-19 health restrictions. The main challenge is to drive as many of the roads as possible between April 1 and September 30, 2021. Information on all the drives, including links to Google Maps, will be available under Events on the VIRPCA website. You will also be receiving a Driving Log in the mail to help keep track of your progress. Some routes may be familiar favourites, while others will hopefully be new to you. All you have to do to register is come up with a team name and email it to me at 25Roads@virpca.org. Make sure to take photos during each drive and send them to me so I can keep track of everyone’s progress. I plan to keep the Club updated throughout the spring and summer. Complete rules and instructions can be found on the VIRPCA website and in the Driving Log. You can do the drives on your own or with your COVID bubble buddies. If health restrictions allow, a few routes can be completed under Club-organized group drives. Information on dates and how to sign up for group drives can be found under Events on the VIRPCA website. The maps include some specific stopping points, which may be helpful if you’re meeting others, but please treat them as suggestions and make the drives your own. For example, if you’re doing Drive #2 between Duncan and Youbou and choose to access Cowichan Lake Road from a different spot, that’s fine – just make sure your route takes you between Duncan and Youbou. At the end of the challenge, the Club will be handing out prizes based not only on participation, but on enthusiasm and creativity. Perhaps you submitted VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

some great photos or videos? Made a scrapbook? Wrote a story for Porscher? Inspired other members to join the challenge? Just make sure to keep me posted on your drives and experiences so I can keep track. You’re also encouraged to post your drives on the VIRPCA Facebook page and tag #VIRPCA25roads on Instagram. I’m eager to start driving the 25 Roads and hope you are, too. Good luck, stay safe and see you out there.

February 2021 saw the unveiling of the latest incarnation of the much revered 911 GT3, this time it was the 992 edition. Porsche have taken the ‘swan neck’ rear wing and diffuser from the GT race car 911 RSR and the 4 litre 6 cylinder is based on the 911 GT3 R (much used and proven in endurance racing) - now used in the GT3 Cup car too. There is a top speed of 320 km/h for the 6-speed manual and 318 km/h with PDK, zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. It has carbon fibre reinforced plastic hood, optional exposed carbon fibre roof, lightweight glass windows, forged light-alloy wheels, and with “infinitely electrically adjustable exhaust flaps” it must sound awesome! The driving aids have been enhanced with a ‘track screen’ that appear at the touch of a button showing just the essentials of tyre pressures, oil pressure, oil temperature, fuel tank level and water temperature. Plus a visual gearshift of coloured bars around the revcounter derived from it’s motorsport heritage. Delivery of the new 911 GT3 is set for May 2021. Please contact Porsche Victoria for further information.

My Affair with Automobiles When I was asked to write a history of my Porsche ownership I thought, “sure, that’s easy!” Not so fast (I like fast) so I went to my garage and dusted off a car album with 55 years of great memories. I discovered a long and beautiful life with cars.
My next Porsche was a 2002 911 Cabriolet. A complete gem, 4 wheel drive, tons of horsepower and brakes. I added 19” HRE rims and Fabspeed exhaust. All was well until I drove a 997.1 twin turbo. This is my current car… 20” HRE rims and tires, Fabspeed exhaust, GEAC turbo upgrade making 550hp, with ceramic brakes to slow the beast down. Best car ever for this generation, it exceeds my need for speed, all the while a dream to drive.
It all started with a Sunbeam convertible in grade 12, what a chick magnet! I blew the motor in a year! My first Porsche was a ’79 924. I loved it and its performance (read cornering). Following that was a BMW Hartge. The problem with that rocket was I didn’t know how to drive! So I went to Race City in Calgary. I was given an instructor and a full racing suit, gloves, shoes, helmet, and in three laps was sure I was going to die! He of course had a Porsche and I was reminded Best Road event how much I loved my Porsche. We were following three sports cars up to the “Road to the Sun” in Montana and it I did however, take a small U-turn and returned into a race! Once we blew past these store a ‘67 Corvette 327 convertible and folcars I backed off and let them pass. Unbelowing that a 427 Goodwood green coupe. known to us, the state police were observing You can see the pattern here! the race from below and at the bottom the police pulled the three cars over and we 35 years of performance driving schools folcoasted through. I was embarrassed and lowed. My BMW years included 635 CSI, M5, X5 and M3 cab in 2002. The M3 engine blew on the track at 150km (under warranty) showering 5 litres of oil on the instructors who were following me! We all survived. My need for speed led me to Russell Racing at Sears Point, California. Open wheel is significantly more dangerous. We started with two days of rain and I was the fastest. Day three was dry and sunny and did I get slapped, couldn’t make the top 10! Back home I decided to race in the Mazda series, great fun on a budget, but lots of prep during the weekends. Porsche Club events As you can tell, I’m a track guy, and Black Rock is the BEST example of an opportunity to drive and socialize as well. If there’s a better event somewhere, where is it? We have many great memories, hopefully with more to come in 2021. swore never again! I have just finished a 5 year restoration of my ‘83 911 Cabriolet, a retirement project. A cautionary tale, what you see isn’t always what’s real!. A full body restoration including, interior leather, carpeting, instruments, complete engine rebuild, clutch, starter, brakes, dash, and on and on! The car had sat in a garage in Sooke for three years, so it seemed to be okay, until we found trouble, and yet I’ve enjoyed the journey. The appraiser has given the finished car “Concours level”, so the time and money was well spent. I can’t thank Peter Beyeler enough, for all this wisdom and skill. It wouldn’t have been possible without him!

Membership in the Southern Alberta Wild Rose (Calgary) club and the Vancouver Island Region Porsche club is a great bonus for all of us. Also the Porscher Magazine, Cars n Coffee, and all the driving events are tremendous. Many thanks to the hard working Board Members! We are so lucky to have the VIMC track in Duncan, and I hope a resolution to the concerns of the neighborhood can be found. I’m in favour of expansion so a back straight can be added and let the big dogs howl (quietly). No Porsche for our Mexican home, where we have an MDX, the perfect people mover for golf and guests.
APRIL 2021 Page 23
In closing I’d like to thank my wife Faye, who has “gone along” with my need for great cars! She is a car girl herself and track trained. Just don’t ask to borrow her Audi Q5. Of the 35 cars I’ve owned nothing beats Porsche! Find one that fits your needs and enjoy the ride! Cheers,

Allow me to introduce myself, I am Dan’s wife, proper name Tracy Duggan. I joined the PCA VIR region in 2011, after we moved from Calgary, AB to Nanaimo, when Dan retired. I was also a member of the Wild Rose from 2008 until 2010. I was born in Chibougamau, PQ, an Airforce brat. We lived in various places across Canada, including Comox BC, which is part of the reason we retired to the Island. As well as being Dan’s wife, I am also servant to an 18 year old cross breed rescue dog named Bob. He is a very good boy, and in 2020 Bob raised more than $9,000 for the Flying Fur Rescue Society in Parksville by walking around Frank J Nay school 17 times in 17 days, an idea inspired from the wonderful veterans in both England and Duncan that did their charity walk. I don’t have a large family, but I am so lucky to have wonderful friends and I consider the Porsche Club to be a form of extended family. Dan bought a Porsche Carrera 3.2 for me in 2009, however, I rarely drove it, and when he sold it, I never saw a penny from the sale… seems rather suspicious to me. I became a Porsche owner because it was mandatory as Dan’s wife. I now have a 2017 Macan which I admire as an ornament in Dan’s garage. I have managed to personalize it with a Pink Flamingo key chain, but I really want vanity plates that say ZIFFLE (Arnold Ziffle is my nickname, and he was the pig from the tv show Green Acres). Dan is not impressed with this idea for some reason. I would really like my next vehicle to be an English taxi cab, but not sure if we have room in Dan's garage, and VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
APRIL 2021 Page 30
Dan may get some idea about me becoming an Uber driver or something. I do seem to have a difficult time telling the difference between Porsche sports models, as they all seem to be grey. I have been known to get in the wrong car after a stop, as Brad Blaney knows too well. Black Rock has been such a wonderful event for me, from the drive to Ucluelet, to staying at the beautiful resort and all the events. I have had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful people and it is such an honour to be able to help raise money for the Cops For Cancer. Norm E. Smith does a wonderful job as the MC, and Dean Aikenhead is quite awesome as a "Vanna White” assistant, providing great comedy. Dan, with a great deal of help from Steve Fairbrother of course, head up the committee and does a great job to ensure things go as smoothly as possible. The driving events are quite incredible, thanks to the time and effort of the instructors and other volunteers. Black Rock is definitely my favourite event. I enjoy the Porscher magazine, with many thanks to Steve Fairbrother for his efforts. It is so well written and interesting and keeps me in touch with happenings in the Porsche club. As for me, the most important thing is to enjoy life and all the many opportunities that are given. I am very dedicated to animal welfare and was part of a rescue organization named ARF in Calgary, AB, which would take feral dogs from rural areas and foster and adopt them. A truly fulfilling experience, and I hope to offer my services to animal welfare groups when the pandemic is under control. I look forward to meeting more members of the club and having fun adventures in the future. Cheers.

Road trips are one of my greatest pleasures during this time of Covid. As some of you know, over the past 15 years I’ve enjoyed exploring North America, from the Dakotas west, with my Land Rover Defender, camping in the many desserts, canyon lands and ghost towns.
However, even though the border is closed, there are still many opportunities to explore the natural beauty of Canada. Bearing this in mind, I am now re-evaluating my choice of vehicle. My Land Rover Defender is exceptional in extreme terrain, however, 99% of the time this extra capability is not required. Exceptional off-road performance is contrasted by mediocre on-road performance. I call my Defender a tractor for a reason, on the highway, it’s a bit agricultural, in a good way of course. In 2012 I was at the Porsche factory in Leipzig Germany and enjoyed the Off-road experience Porsche offered in the Cayenne. Their training grounds include a 45-degree ascent/descent, a side slope berm, water crossings and trails. I came away impressed with the Cayenne’s ability off-road. The Cayenne’s off-road limitations are mostly tire/suspension choices the factory makes to appeal to most buyers. VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

I will be building and developing products to enhance the Cayenne for overlanding. Many of the choices I make will not be what you expect. My focus will be on the reliability, economy and the equipment that addresses real world travel in North America. Unlike many countries in the world there is plentiful access to food, water, and gasoline. Even in the remotest locations like the Owyhee desert in Eastern Oregon resources are available within 150 miles. My choice is to utilize the 2004 to 2006 Cayenne with the 3.2 V6 engine. With some modifications this engine will be extremely reliable and produce adequate hour. Preparation will include improvements to the cooling, oiling, exhaust and tuning. A great many modifications are not conducive to good overland performance. Examples include exceptionally large tires, excessive ride height and placing weight on roof. As my project progresses, I will share my logic in determining choices. I certainly welcome any feedback or questions you may have. paul.rossmo@prhistorics.com VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

Bill passed to Tim this article that he wrote for OPR. He even went to the trouble of substituting BC regs.. Many thanks Bill. Hi, my name is Bill Corrigan and I’m the Safety Chair for the Olympic Peninsula Region. This article is part of a series that I hope to have in each newsletter. We’ll cover a gamut of subjects related to safer operation of your vehicles on public roadways. This ‘issue’ is going to deal with hydroplaning but bear with me just this one time to set the tone and provide a bit of my background. I’m a recently retired police officer but still work about 15 hours a week to help the department. I spent my first couple of years of police work around 2000 in the Washington State Patrol in Kitsap County, WA. In 2004 I transitioned to the Port Townsend Police Department. I’ve been an active police driving instructor (we call it EVOC – Emergency Vehicle Operations Course) since 2006 providing initial training for new officers and recurring training for veteran officers. Full-time and Reserve officers get annual training updates that include low-speed placement (maneuvering through tight spaces), pursuit driving and its legal aspects, and autocrossstyle driving through ever-changing cone patterns that exercise specific aspects of vehicle control, and the skid-car. Skid-car training instructs skid avoidance and recovery, practicing both oversteer and understeer skid entries and recoveries.
One of my objectives with this column is to provide insights and techniques I’ve learned from police driving that may be new, or that you may have forgotten since you received formal driving instruction long ago, and some new ways to think about everyday safety on public roads. A lot has changed since we went through Drivers Ed. Feedback from the reader is always welcome, and questions are solicited. Your question could be a great topic for a future article. One final comment … everything presented here is advice and/or an alternate method to think about driving situations and not direction. In any event you encounter as the driver, you must make the best decision possible by applying your personal experience and training. Finally, on to hydroplaning! Wikipedia defines hydroplaning as “a loss of steering or
braking control when a layer of water prevents direct contact between tires and the road.”
This is a good point to introduce a term we’ll use often related to “contact between the tires and the road.” It is “rolling friction”, that friction needed to effectively brake, steer or accelerate. Just to clarify for those who ask, “What other kind of tire friction is there?” There is ‘skidding’ friction, and it’s well known that control is reduced or even totally lost when you experience skidding friction. So, put that kind of ‘friction’ aside for now.
Finally, officers who are qualified renew their proficiency in the Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) which is where police officers contact a pursued vehicle with their patrol car to make the pursued vehicle lose control. Officers are required to participate in all When your vehicle hydroplanes, it’s lost rollphases of this training at least once per year. ing friction with the road surface. tors increase the likelihood for hydroplaning, and in each there are steps you can take prior to the onset to mitigate that risk. We’ll talk about each factor and a means to mitigate it. Tires Two factors are in play here, tread depth and inflation pressure. 1. The grooves in your tires are design to channel water out from under the tire. Tread depth is critical to this task. There is a three-way relationship between water depth, tread depth, speed, and the onset of hydroplaning. The more tread depth you have the greater the amount of water is moved by the tire and the higher the hydroplaning resistance. Water depth and speed can quickly overwhelm the tread’s ability to move water. One trick is to drive in the tire swipes of the vehicles you’re following … they’ve already pushed the water aside, hence it’s not as deep in their swipes. While the Province dictates the tread depth that will result in a violation, we should never let our tires get worn to that level. That may be ‘good enough’ on a dry road but it’s looking for trouble quickly on a wet roadway. Here is that portion of BC regulations regarding tread depth: B.C. Reg. 26/58 MOTOR VEHICLE ACT REGULATIONS Division 7 – Other Equipment Last amended January 11, 2021 Defects in pneumatic tires 7.161 (1) No person shall drive or operate a motor vehicle or trailer equipped with pneumatic tires that are not in good order or that have any one of the following defects or conditions: a) cord break or an air leak; b) tread damage including cracks, cuts or snags in excess of 2.5 cm in any direction and deep enough to expose the ply cords; c) bumps, bulges or lumps apparently caused by separation of the tread or sidewall from the ply cords or by partial failure of the tire structure, including the bead area; d) tread worn to the extent that i. in the case of a commercial vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 5 500 kg or more, less than 3 mm of tread groove depth of a front tire or 1.5 mm of tread groove depth of a rear tire, or Consolidation current to January 29, 2021 ii. in the case of a vehicle other than a vehicle referred to in subparagraph (i), less than 1.5 mm of tread groove depth on any tire remains at 2 points on the circumference of the tire tread not closer together than 38 cm, or tread worn to the extent that tread wear indicators in any 2 adjacent grooves of the tread contact the road surface. 2. Inflation pressure is an oft-forgotten contributing factor. Always keep your tires inflated to the manufacture’s recommended values. A 25% reduction in recommended VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER

I also added a splash of color/contrast to the car. I don’t really fancy black, but you can’t choose the colour on a used car. So it got some white stripes to off-set the allblack look. Lastly I transferred items from the other car such as the lights, sump-guard, VHF radio, extra power-outlets. I think I’m almost ready. Still on my to-do list are the more nice-to-haves such as stone guards and a set of lightweight seats are waiting to be installed.
