EXECUTIVE COMMENT

President, Garth Webber Atkins

Spring is officially here, and the road beckons! To kick off the start of the driving season, the Club is offering free coffee for members at Cars & Coffee on April 9 in Courtenay, and April 10 in Parksville and Victoria. I hope to see many of you there. Sadly, I won’t be able to start the season just yet, as my 944 is still waiting on parts for the engine rebuild. Apparently, there is one place in North America that makes sleeves, and demand is up. And me without a spare Porsche. Hmmmm. While I would much rather attend Porsche events in a Porsche, it is, after all, not just the cars, it’s the people! The Executive’s attention to date has been on some big events further out, so you may need to resort to your 25 Roads guide for a few weeks until we can pull together some spring drives. If you have any ideas for interesting new places to visit, please let me or another Exec Committee member know. Sometimes the inspiration is half the work. If you think you’d like to take folks there yourself, we have several experienced tour leaders that would be happy to work with you to arrange a drive. Registration is now open for the Van Isle Adventure Tour. This driving event takes place over two days and explores some of the best roads on Vancouver Island. Starting details will be shared with registrants beforehand, but the details of the route and the name and location of the 4-star resort where participants will stay at will be unknown until route books are handed out at the start. I love a mystery! I have signed up and am really looking forward to the adventure. Register for the adventure here via MSR. In March, I attended the Zone 6 President’s meeting in Boise, Idaho. It was great to connect with my counterparts, and discuss matters of mutual interest. We heard presentations from our Zone 6 rep, John Sommerwerk, and from two PCA National Office representatives: Executive Council Secretary Todd Benz and Driving Tour Chair Greg Halverson. Todd went over a state of the union for PCA, which highlighted a 6.6% growth last year collectively in the 14 Zones and 147 Regions. It was the biggest growth year ever. A new PCA event for 2021 was ünStock, a show for modified Porsches. You can check it out here on YouTube. Todd also went over PCA’s 5 strategic initiatives: 1. Marketing, member engagement and long-term growth 2. Maintaining highest standards for PCA media (print, digital, social) 3. Continuing to improve technical resources for members 4. Maintaining leadership in Porsche performance driving 5. Region engagement and impact

PCA supports the regions with print, video and expert resources on a broad range of the activities that Regions undertake. Looking forward to seeing you on the road. I may be in a bronze BMW X3 through most of April, but I’m out there!

PCA Zone 6 Representative, John P Sommerwerck

ebruary was a busy month; getting ready for the Zone 6 President’s meeting, continuing our Zone 6 travel plans, and trying to find time to scratch my downhill skiing addiction. F On March 19, the Zone 6 Region Presidents met in Boise to discuss the PCA Strategic Plan, Risk Management, Region Leadership 101, and to have an open discussion on issues impacting our regions. All ten regions were represented. Five of the regions sent multiple representatives. Greg Halverson, PCA National Tour director and PNWR member, was in attendance to discuss running successful PCA tours. It was great to meet in person once again. The issues impacting the Zone 6 regions we focused on included data security & privacy, newsletters, and volunteerism. We discussed the importance to have key documents stored securely and why we need to protect the privacy of member data. Region newsletters continue to be a source of concern. Publish online or hardcopy or both? How much to charge for ads? It is never easy to fill region positions and Covid regulations have made it more difficult to reach out and get folks to fill leadership positions within our regions. It is my hope that the discussions we had start us down the path to successful resolutions. Nancy and I are now registered for Broadmoor Treffen in April, VIR’s Black Rock in May, Parade in June, CWR’s Escape 2022 in July and INWR’s 50th Anniversary Gala in August. Also on our travel planning horizon is the OR’s Summer Picnic in August, Sun River Treffen in September, and SSR’s Oktoberfast in October. We continue to look for more opportunities to visit the Zone 6 regions. I have been warned that if I need new tires for my Porsches order them soon. With all this driving we will need good rubber. I am happy to report that I was able to secure a new set of Pirelli P-Zeros. The fronts came from a Seattle, WA warehouse, and the rears from Shreveport, LA. Stay healthy and we will see you in the Zone.

John
