The VIR Executive meets on the 2nd week of every month, see “Around The Bend” for details. Please contact the Club Secretary for meeting minutes or to attend.

VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER October 2022 Page 5

September was another active month for Vancouver Island Region, with the New Member Social, the Gold River drive, and the Autumn Time Speed Distance Rally. Many thanks to Kathleen Short, Dan Bourlet and Klaus Kreye, respectively for planning and hosting these events.

Next month, our main event is the Annual General Meeting on October 16 at the Fairwinds Golf Club in Nanoose Bay, BC. We usually hold it in Duncan, and that has worked well, but we are trying something different to see how that works. We are holding it further up the Island this year to make attendance from mid and up-Island members a little easier. I hope that any members we might lose from Victoria will be balanced by new attendees from all parts north of Duncan.

The AGM starts at 10am with coffee, with the actual meeting beginning at 10:30. Lunch begins at noon. There is no charge for the AGM, but lunch is offered at a low, low price of just $20. The Club is picking up part of the tab, to tempt you out to this important meeting. We need 5% of the membership to have a quorum, but hope more members will come to enjoy a good lunch and engage a little in the business side of the club. You could win our big door prize - a one year subscription to 000 Magazine. This is likely the last time we will have this prize to give away. Register through MotorsportReg.com.

We will be conducting elections for Board positions at the meeting. All positions are up for re-election and any member may run for any position. We welcome competition and the full expression of democracy, but having said that, if you are interested in being on the Board, and you live in the north or south of the Island, please consider the position of South Island Director or Up Island Director, as these two positions currently do not have anyone standing for them. Please contact me for information on the vacant positions, or Tim Evans as Nominations Chair if you are interested in running for any Board position.

We have a bonus activity at the AGM this year. You can sign up to play a round of golf after the meeting, for a mere $29. Register for golf when you register for the AGM.

Finally, we are also looking for a new Newsletter Editor, as Steve Fairbrother is retiring from that position after seven years. His excellent work on Porscher won three PCA National Awards, we are thankful for the time he has given us. Please contact me or Steve if you are interested in taking up the pen for the Club.

I hope to see you at the AGM!

PCA Zone 6 Representative, John P Sommerwerck

We are now home after enjoying the Treffen Bend. The weather mostly cooperated and the High Desert Region volunteers and the PCA National staff put on a great event. Special thanks go out to Pete Olsen and his High Desert Region team of volunteers for showing all a great time. Mark your calendars, in 2023, the Spring Treffen will be held in April at the Barnsley Resort in Adairsville, GA. The Fall Treffen will be held in September, in St Louis. These are great events, and we would strongly suggest you consider attending a Treffen in 2023.

While Fall signals, for many of us, that we are nearing the end of our driving season, there are still many great Zone 6 region events, like Oktoberfast; Brian Redman Tech ED; and Olympic Peninsula Region’s wine tour. See the Zone 6 website for more information.

PCA now has more than 150,000 members! Our Zone continues to grow its membership. Through August, the ten Zone 6 Regions have added 222 new members. There are 6,916 PCA members in Zone 6. Silver Sage region is the 4th fastest growing PCA region in factored growth among the 147 PCA regions!

Nancy and I are winding up our 2022 visits to the Zone 6 regions. As I pen this newsletter, we have been to all but two of the regions. We have been graciously welcomed everywhere we have gone. Thank you. Zone 6 is spread across a large area –three US states and a Canadian province. As we traveled across the zone, we found a shared passion for the Porsche marque and we live up to the PCA mantra: ‘It’s not just the cars, It’s the people’.

We head out next to Pacific Northwest Region’s North Cascades Highway tour and then to Olympic Peninsula’s wine tour. We hope to see many of you as we travel around Zone 6.

Stay healthy and we will see you in the Zone.

John

Editor, Steve Fairbrother

After nearly seven years as Editor, I am stepping down from that role at this AGM. I would like to thank EVERYONE who contributed to Porscher since my start just after the AGM of 2015. Many thanks to Sonia Ross who has corrected the errors that I missed in all the articles. Please carry on submitting your photos and stories to the next Editor.

I shall still be involved with the Executive for the moment, handling MotorsportReg, Square and our Facebook group moderation and administration (in conjunction with Tim Evans).

See you around at the AGM, Cars & Coffee, and Club events, in our new Carmine Red Macan S from November (fingers crossed!).

Five out of seven of the current Board members intend to stand for re election when the positions come up for election at the AGM. The two which do not yet have declared candidates are two of the three Area Directors. An overview of the positions is provided here to help members determine if they might be interested in the position.

In addition to the two Area Director positions, the Board is in need of a new Chair for the Black Rock Committee. Information on this position is provided as well.

Two Area Director Positions: South Island and Up-Island

The Area Director (AD) acts as a liaison between the Board of Directors and the members in the geographic area related to the position.

The AD attends monthly virtual meetings of the Executive Committee, which is made up of the elected Board members, and the appointed Chairs. At those meetings, the AD provides any information they may have about area member preferences or interests, as may be needed. Along with other directors and chairs, they also contribute generally to discussion and decisions on Club matters.

The AD acts as a resource for members in their area, fielding questions about the Club and the work of the Executive Committee, and promoting upcoming events.

As an elected board member, the Area Director votes on matters requiring Board direction or approval.

Another main role of the Area Director is to work with the Executive Committee and members to ensure that some events take place in or near the AD’s geographic area. Historically, Area Directors have planned and led at least one driving tour per year.

Members who would like more information on these positions may contact Garth Webber Atkins, President, or the current Area Directors: Ron Dempsey, South Island Director, or Wendy Woodley, Up-Island Director.

VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER October 2022 Page 14

Black Rock Committee Chair

“Black Rock” is Vancouver Island Region’s signature multi-region event. It is a weekend event held at Black Rock Resort in Ucluelet, and has typically included a welcome social, two days of different driving events, charity fundraiser with silent and live auctions, members’ banquet, community beach barbeque, a show and shine, and walking events.

The Chair of the Black Rock Committee leads a team of member volunteers to plan, organize and roll out the event within a budget and framework developed in discussion with, and approved by, the VIR Board. The Chair is the primary contact for the hotel, and engages with local government and community organizations as needed, as well as representatives of the supported charities. The Chair is also responsible for raising additional funds as needed. Project management experience or good organizational skills would be beneficial.

Members who would like more information on this position should contact Dan Bourlet.

Other Board positions

While the current Board is only actively seeking interest for the positions known to be vacant at the end of the year, members should be aware that any member can run for any Board position. Board positions are elected for oneyear terms, so must stand for re-election each year. If the incumbent is uncontested, they will win the position by acclamation. If another member has been nominated, there will be a secret ballot at the AGM.

Any member interested in learning more about, or in running for one of the seven Board positions should contact the Nominations Chair, Tim Evans.

President’s Annual Report 2021-22

It is hard to believe that nearly a year has gone by since I assumed the role of President of Vancouver Island Region, Porsche Club of America. In that year, the Club has organized a variety of events for the benefit of our members: a holiday dinner; three webinars; one tech event; three free coffee Cars & Coffee; eight driving tours; Black Rock - our signature multi-region event which includes track events; the 25th anniversary grand finale picnic; a new member social; two TSD rallies; and a first ever overnight adventure tour.

Many of these events included a fundraising aspect. We raised $7,355 for CFAX Santas Anonymous; $18,712 for Cops for Cancer “Tour de Rock”; $7,724 for Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade; $325 for Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society; $500 for the Gold River Food Network and $945 for the Shawnigan Lake Historical Society, for a total of $35,561. Well done, VIR!

The Club also published 11 issues of our Porscher newsletter, winning second in its class in the PCA national newsletter contest. Our new website gained national PCA recognition as well, placing third in its class in the national website contest.

The events and the awards could not happen without the efforts of the Executive Committee and active members who volunteer their time to plan, organize and lead these activities. I am proud and grateful to work alongside those dedicated VIR members.

My presidential role has included attending two National PCA Board of Directors meetings via Zoom, and the Zone 6 Presidents’ Meeting in Boise, Idaho. I very much appreciated the Region’s support to attend the latter meeting in person, so I could meet my counterparts in the nine other regions of Zone 6. I think that the connections made and the information exchanged will serve the Club well.

My greatest hope is that members enjoyed their experience of the Club this year, even if it was just reading Panorama, or following who was doing what on our Facebook group page. I enjoyed the year myself, including my role as President, and I intend to run for President again for 2023. Should I be successful, I look forward to another year of serving the Club.

Best regards,

VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER October 2022 Page 26

Membership Chair’s Annual Report 2021-22

This year the club welcomed 70 new members, made up of primary, co members and transfer ins for a total of 642 members. Our longest standing member joined the PCA in 1976.

Our junior members went from 13 to 38.

Overall, the PCA grew by 7,050 members from this time last year.

With so many great people, dedicated volunteers and fun, well-run events, it’s no wonder this Club is flourishing.

Up-Island Director’s Annual Report 2021-22

Gary & I joined PCA, in 2012 when we purchased our 2002 Boxster. When Trevor Minta stepped down from being the Up Island Director, I was pleased to take over from Trevor.

I started a monthly Cars & Coffee, the second Saturday of the month, in the Crown Isle Plaza, opposite Starbucks. This location served us well.

As of July this year, we have moved to the parking lot next to PetSmart, which gives us a little more space and some seating areas. We meet from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Starbucks is just a two minute walk.

Over the years, I have planned drives to Mt. Washington Alpine Resort for a tour by the Marmot Recovery Program and two visits to Quadra Island which included a visit to the South Island Winery. We also visited H.M.C.S Quadra, Comox Valley Cadet Training location, and one year we drove graduates of the French School, which included a visit of Filberg Heritage Lodge & Park, a drive ending at the Crown Isle Resort for their graduation dinner & dance. I also usually held Valentine Luncheons and Christmas luncheons.

I have enjoyed 11 years of hosting our members, both new & long time members, which often includes dogs, plus the public, that dropped in to see what we were up to!

Look forward to seeing you at the next Cars & Coffee.

VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER October 2022 Page 27

South Island Director’s Annual Report 2021-22

Coming out of the pandemic meant a slow and steady return to normal events on the South Island. The Holiday Charity Dinner took place in early December, and despite restrictions limiting group sizes, we were able to raise $7,355 for CFAX Santas Anonymous thanks to generous donations by VIRPCA members from around Vancouver Island.

Midway through the year, I also put together the first ever VanIsle Adventure Tour. This two day event took 23 teams of participants around the Mid-island with an overnight stay at the Tigh Na Mara Resort in Parksville before taking off for Gold River the following morning. The event was a great success and we hope to see the second edition take place in 2023.

Throughout the year, Cars & Coffee at Eagle Creek was consistently well attended every Sunday morning. As the mall's parking lot becomes busier, 2023 might be a good time to begin discussion on exploring alternate venues in case we outgrow the space we have used for over five years.

VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER October 2022 Page 28

Rally Chair’s Annual Report 2021-22

This is the fifth year that the club has been holding TSD rallies. I am pleased that we were able to hold two rallies during this year –at the time of writing the second is a week away and preparations are almost done.

Participation has grown slowly and we now have a core of regular participants with four teams vying for top honours. The best of both events will determine the winner and trophy holder.

Our Spring Rally took place under sunny skies and the team of Sue Frew and Geoff Melnychuk took the win by a large margin, scoring 61 points. In second place was the father & son team of John and Daniel Rogers with 340 points. Scores are in demerit points. The main reason everyone, except Sue and Geoff, scored poorly is that we all missed one crucial detail in the instructions!

The results of the Fall Rally will be eagerly awaited – can Sue and Geoff retain the lead?

Rallying in BC has not taken place during the current conditions. We were informed that the Pacific Forest Rally was cancelled due to issues with reserving accommodations. It remains to be seen if the Totem, Big White or Thunderbird rallies will take place. I am looking forward to next year, which will hopefully bring all our regular events.

I would like to thank the members that supported these events, with continued support this can remain a regular event in the coming years and kick-start rallying on the island.

On September 10th, 16 cars and 23 VIR members drove from Nanaimo, Courtenay or Campbell River to Gold River for lunch at the local restaurant/pub in the town and also to donate money to the Gold River Food Network via the event registration fee.

Seen below is drive organiser Dan Bourlet, presenting a cheque for $500 to the charity representative who was extremely thankful.

Well done to everyone who attended the drive, this is now an annual event for the Club and the drive to Gold River is also most enjoyable - as is the food at the pub!

This year’s New Members’ Social was held September 18 at the beautiful Arbutus Ridge Golf Club in Cobble Hill. This annual event is to welcome new members with a free lunch and allows them to mingle with longstanding members, who can share their past experiences.

This year the VIRPCA welcomed 70 new members including transfer ins from other regions. Of those, 19 new members joined 17 longstanding members for a delicious lunch, a few speeches and enough door prizes for everyone. It was a fun event and I would like to thank all who came and made this event a success.

Thank you to Porsche Centre Victoria and the VIRPCA for the wonderful door prizes. Going home with a little bit of swag is always nice.

A special thank you to the Arbutus Ridge Golf Club staff, who were very accommodating with some last-minute changes.

I look forward to welcoming more of you at next year’s event.

As part of the Porsches on the Pitch event at Shawnigan Lake School we had a 50/50 draw to raise money for a local charity. Our club has a history of supporting charities in the communities where we hold our events. We raised $945 through the 50/50 draw and the Shawnigan Lake Historical Society which operate the Shawnigan Lake Museum was chosen to receive the funds.

I had the pleasure of presenting the cheque to Lori Treloar, the Executive Director of the Shawnigan Lake Museum. Our donation will go towards their planned museum expansion for which they have already raised over two million dollars. Lori gave us a tour of the museum which is full of artifacts and pictures on the history of the area.

A highlight was the E.J. Hughes Gallery which had a number of his original paintings and drawings. He was a resident of Shawnigan Lake for twenty years and a resident of the Cowichan Valley for most of his life. Next time you are in the area I encourage you to stop and have a look. The museum is located in the village and is admission by donation.

VIR Member, Tony Booth

Recently I have been asked “what is your favourite Porsche?” Well, I normally reply “a roaring 993 with the air intake package”, or sometimes “the docile 912 with its mechanically noisy old 356 engine.”

Well, last couple of times I just said “the 968 Coupe” to which the response has been much eye blinking until I quickly follow up with “it could have been called a Series 3 944 (which also could have been called a series 2 924S) such is the heritage of the 968.

It is not a 944. According to Porsche, it is 83% new, but it’s a good response for those not familiar with the 968, and there are many who have never even heard of the Porsche 968. Some passers-by have even asked if it’s a new line of Porsches and the rear view mirror has to be checked often watching out for followers closing in to read the numbers 968 on the rear. Maybe Prince fans or possibly due to its rarity?

Very few 968’s were delivered to North America and even less to Canada. In its reign from 1992 to 1995 a total of only 2,234 Coupes were destined for all of NA. Of that number, only 121 were shipped to Canada with the C36 Canadian specification and options which included heated seats and headlight washers. Luckily I’ve had this Canadian specification 968 for several years now and it’s become my daily driver but only in the good weather of course!

The stunning ‘violet blue metallic’ colour which attracted much attention was to become the focus of trying to understand the Porsche paint code system. The result was very encouraging, for this car turns out to be a rare 968. However, my first thoughts were about Porsche’s declaration that the car was 83% new when it looked so similar to the earlier 924 and the 944 lines, not forgetting that the year 1994 was quite early in the era of the technique of ‘marketing of cosmetic changes’. So where can this 83% be found? And, what had I actually purchased?

For a start, on the documentary side, I can recommend two books and several articles that get down to the solid facts and data, rather than flowery marketing. Peter Morgan’s “Original Porsche 924/944/968” 1998 published by Bay View Books in the U.K. is a delightful, well documented and photographic history of these three models. It also has sections on buying and driving them. It dedicates 18 of 128 pages solely to the 968 and its rare variants.

ni “Porsche 968” 1992 published by Automobilia, Srl in Italy, offers excellent photos and impressions of the car from many aspects.

As regards articles, “Porsche Panorama” has published articles that can be recovered and read on the PCA.org site. These include -

“What’s going on with the Porsche 968 Market” is a recent stunning article by Rob Sax on a “Bring a Trailer” auction, where a low mileage ‘colour to sample’ 968 Coupe sold for US $164,000. Hopefully, indicating more investment potential?

https://www.pca.org/news/whats going on with the porsche 968 market

However, back to the Porsche claim of the 968 being 83% new...

The biggest innovation was a brand new, all aluminium, 250bhp 4-cylinder 3 litre engine that introduced, for the first time, VarioCam variable valve timing on the twin camshaft cylinder head. It became the largest capacity four cylinder engine at the time with each cylinder the volume of a standard bottle of wine -750 cc. The engine produces a strong torque of 225 lb-ft at 4,100rpm.

A new Motronic ignition controls the VarioCam adjustment system. The camshaft profiles were designed for maximum power, and the timing could be advanced for better torque when the rpm fell below a set point. Fuel consumption and exhaust emissions were improved with the Motronic 2.1 allowing RON 95 (AKI 87) fuels to be used if needed.

An often questionable option 249, is the fully developed, but sometimes falsely maligned Tiptronic auto transmission. The Tiptronic was originally introduced on the Porsche 964 C2 in 1991 and subsequently used on virtually all high end performance and consumer vehicles ever since. Porsche had been developing automatic transmissions since before the 1960’s and introduced the Sportomatic in 1967. It was somewhat quirky and more of an automatic clutch than a full auto box and is not to be confused with the sophisticated Tiptronic.

Porsche and ZF had been collaborating on the design and development of automatic transmissions since 2003. One project code named DT111 was to eventually become the PDK du-

VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER October 2022 Page 46

al clutch system we know today. The Tiptronic was a commercial stepping stone along the way making use of progressive electronics and algorithm developments on the way to the launch of the ultimate PDK in 2008.

The 968 Tiptronic monitors throttle position and movement, engine rpm and road speed, ABS activation, fuel delivery sensors, all analysing the driver’s style and adopting one of five shift maps. The algorithm includes manual override in the secondary shift gate, allowing up and down changes at will, except at inopportune times such as while negotiating a very tight corner. In the manual shift gate a very pleasant surprise was discovered when beating a BMW “Ubiquitous” off the lights one day. There is an automatic upshift just before each red line rpm! Just keep it floored like the ‘Launch Control’ - well almost.

Interestingly, the history of the manual vs automatic transmission in Porsche AG will be written one day and show the ins and outs of technology vs consumer fads and beliefs. Personally I like my Tiptronic 968 as it’s effortless and relaxing in the city and it wakes up and selects the sport mode very quickly outside of it (or after my ‘better half’ has been driving it!).

As regards the question of the 968 being 83% new, it all depends on how Porsche measured it. But, what can be said is the “Evolution rather than revolution” in the 924 944 968 range contributed to over a third of all Porsches manufactured up to 1995. The 968 was definitely innovative. The 4-cylinder water cooled Porsche was revived 22 years later in 2014 with the 252 hp Macan - just 12 more than the 968.

So, back to “paint codes” search, the result of which eventually turned out to be much more exciting than watching it dry. The striking colour required defining as I had the feeling if might be a rare colour. And a quick search for the option sticker found it under the carpet in the trunk. The L 999 designation indicated that a special paint finish had been requested by the original purchaser. The code did not specify the actual colour. It just indicated a special manufacturing order for the Porsche factory in Stuttgart.

So what was is the colour of my 968 called? Next the paint sticker, which was found tucked away in the hot part of engine bay. It showed all of the necessary data needed to establish the paint colour code and it’s description. How many of this colour are there?

Violet Blue Metallic/Veilchenblaumetallic 57 37E 9 3 MS Bingo!

VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER October 2022 Page 48

The next step was to match this data up with Porsche data and documentation. Having acquired a 1994 Porsche Press Kit and the 1994 Porsche colour chart for the 968, it was seen that the paint in this colour description and code was not offered as an option for my 1994 model year but previously in 1993. It seemed as though the original owner wanted that colour, to the extent that they were willing to pay an extra US $2,498 for it. As previously found, few 968’s were delivered to North America and even less to Canada. In its reign from 1992 to 1995 a total of only 2,234 Coupes were destined for all of NA. Of that number, only 121 were shipped to Canada, and my car is one of those.

The question then becomes how many of the Violet Blue Metallic Porsche 968’s “Colour to Sample” are in Canada from the 121 or the 2113 in the USA. For this I relied on the analysis of Porsche records previously carried out by Jeff Coe the founder of the Porsche 968 Register, which is acknowledged by the PCA. https://968register.org/production data/coupes/

The information on my 968 provided by the “968 Register” shows the following, very satisfying data quote…

“C2S = Colour to sample – Still offered for your new Porsche today, a buyer could request a “colour to sample” exterior paint colour. Available in both solid and metallic, the colour to sample request would have to be accepted by Porsche and then it would add months to the delivery time of your new 968 due to the special production handling. It also added US $2,498 to the cost. Despite those negatives 18 North American 968s of the 4,242 were produced and painted under the ‘colour to sample’ program. The production profile is as follows.

North American 968 Registry production profile - Coupe RS 820376

NA coupe 1992-1995 Production sequence number of 2,234 is #1,573

NA coupe 1994 Production sequence number of 718 is #316

Exterior color statistics: 1 of 9,999 “color to sample” metallic coupes.

Exterior ?Interior color combo stats: 1 of 3 Code 999 “color to sample” metallic coupes with a Classic Grey interior.

Comments: Your 968 is a true 1994 model year car built in August or September of 1993. It has the mid-year model changes which include the 993-style seats and the lack of engine bay trim. Your car is a Canadian package 968 Coupe, 1 of 121 and is equipped with the mandated Canadian package options including the C36 Canadian omissions. Your car is a vary rare ‘Color to sample” metallic coupe, 1 of just 9 produced ‘-and one of 3 with that particular color combination.)

Yes indeed, my Violet Blue Metallic 968 Coupe is certified “a rare one” and might even be the only one of this colour combo yet to be identified in Canada and the USA.

A very satisfying conclusion, thank you 968 Registry.

Tony

Porscher Editor, Steve Fairbrother

On a sunny, Monday August afternoon, I joined a few other VIR members and Porsche Centre Victoria (PCV) clients at the Villa Eyrie for a short road trial of some GTS models.

There was a Taycan GTS, 911 Carrera GTS, Boxster GTS 4.0, Panamera GTS and a Cayenne Turbo GT.

Attendees were able to choose which cars they were interested in driving and after the allocation we set off driving around the Villa Eyrie and Shawnigan Lake locale and then back to the Villa after changing cars.

It was quite a short session, much less than previous years’ similar events when we were at the VIMC track for some autocross, then track lapping and some public road driving too.

The Cayenne Turbo GT (below) is a beast, I was in the Taycan and pulled out onto Hwy 1 pretty quickly and it was right behind me all the way. So if you want a really fast SUV, look into the Turbo GT.

A swag bag was provided which contained a rather neat paper version of the 911 RSR, to be assembled later.

Many thanks to PCV and Porsche Canada/PCNA for the opportunity to drive the vehicles.

Steve
