As I have driven around the Victoria area over the winter, I’ve seen a lot of Porsches out and about. Not so many of the older ones, but Macans, Cayennes, and lots of Boxsters. I am sure there were 911s as well, but for some reason, I really noticed Boxsters. Some of the time I was in my 944, grateful that waaayyy back in 1986, not only had heated seats been invented, but were selected as an option by the original owner. Or, to be more accurate, heated seat, singular. A passenger is out of luck. I wondered what the story might have been there, so went online to see what was standard. I found option codes

for “Heated seat left” and “Heated seat right”, so it looked like a deliberate choice, not heated driver standard and passenger extra. It would still be interesting to know the story. Someone who preferred to drive alone? A budget constraint? Single person just not really thinking things through? If the latter, maybe they’d still have it if it had two heated seats.

So now I’m wondering if that’s a differentiator in who drives their Porsche in the winter. The miracle of heated seats, or seat, as the case may be.

Your VIR Executive Committee has been very busy over the winter planning club activities for 2023. We have a few new events coming up that we hope will delight. Our annual multi-region event will change in location and format this year. We will be going back to a prevous location in holding it at Crown Isle Resort and Golf Club, May 25-28. We are looking forward to the variety of activities this location offers us. Registration details for “Wochenende at Crown Isle 2023” are expected to be released March 1, so watch your e-mail and Facebook.

Another new offering is a trip to the LeMay Museum in Tacoma on April 20 for their 75 Years of Porsche exhibit.

Dates and details can be found in this issue in “Around the Bend”.

Happy driving!

Best regards,

Garth Webber Atkins

Volunteers

Interested in helping Vancouver Island Region? Let us know!

What makes the PCA so special is the variety of events that are organized by volunteers with a diverse and deep set of skills gained through careers or other life experiences. This is a busy time of year as we plan regional events for 2023, and we often need help to make things run as smoothly as possible.

Not everyone wants to take on organizing a drive or multi-day event, but quite often those who do are looking for help with registration, 'sweep' (following a group of cars to make sure that nobody gets left behind), or someone to take on a specific task like booking a lunch location.

If you've given thought to helping out in some way, please email me with your name and interest areas or any skills that you think the club might need. I'll gather that list together to provide to event organizers as planning continues over the next few months.

If you're interested in helping the club out for an event, send an email with 'volunteer' in the title to Ron Dempsey, vicepresident@virpca.org

It’s been a few months in the 911..So much fun! Even though buying a car like this in November may not be the most practical time, I have to say she has not let me down at all. Sure, there have been some snowy days that I decided to leave the car parked, but other than that, I have been using my car daily. (And there was a week I was not able to drive it, but I rather not talk about that………… Haha.)

Some of the board members were so kind to provide me with the 25Roads booklet, so I did the most amazing drive from Parksville to Langford via Lake

Cowichan and Port Renfrew. Picked a rainy Sunday, so there was hardly any traffic on Cowichan Valley Highway to Port Renfrew for lunch. Had a lot of fun driving the newly paved stretch from there to Langford. We finished the drive back to the starting point the next day. Can’t wait for the spring to explore more of the 25Roads drives!

In Mid-February, I attended the PCA Winter Executive Meeting. The last part of the meeting was an evening at the Brumos Collection.

https://www.thebrumoscollection.com/

The Brumos Collection is 35,000 square feet, displaying a collection of vintage cars from the early 1900’s to present day. Display cabinets full of trophies and memoriblial also on display. The unanimous favourite car on display was not a Porsche, but a 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900. Gorgeous but well beyond my bank account!!

“In the Zone” Februrary, 2022

Nancy and I started February with a trip to Florida. While I am, some would say, a hardcore skier, it was great to head south for some warmer temperatures and to see good friends. The focus of our trip was attendance at the PCA Winter Meeting in Jacksonville, FL. Each winter the PCA leadership team – Executive Council, Zone Reps, and National Chairs gather to discuss all things PCA. This is the first in person gathering since 2020 – damn Covid! I prefer in person meetings to Zoom, so much more seems to be accomplished. Some key take aways from the meeting; PCA continues to grow. As of February 15th, PCA had 101,525 primary members and 155,018 total members! We discussed region best practices in the areas of social media, Redbook, and bylaws. The meeting closed with a night at the Brumos Museum. As one would have expected the museum highlighted all things Brumos racing. It also included an eclectic collection of vintage cars including a 1939 Alfa Romeo that was a crowd favorite.

I hope you have completed your Phase 1 Parade registration. The 2023 Porsche Parade will be in Palm Springs, from June 18th to the 24th. I have registered for Parade and secured my housing. During Phase 2, opening on April 5th, co-entrants are added, as well as banquets, events and tours selections are made.

Nancy and I began our 2023 region visits with a trip to PNWR. I participated in PNWR’s annual awards banquet which showcased those members that had been instrumental in the region’s success. On display was a new GT4 RS in shark blue, the car of my dreams. Nancy and I are now planning on 2023 Zone 6 travels. In addition to the Zone 6 signature events, which can be found at www.zone6.pca.org, we are looking for unique opportunities to visit your region. Zone 6 abounds in great roads to drive and great automotive venues. As part of our travels to the Zone 6 Region Presidents meeting, we will make a side trip to the Lemay Museum in Tacoma, WA to visit their 75 Years of Porsche Exhibit, 75 Years of Porsche - America's Car Museum (americascarmuseum.org)

Parting shot. From the Brumos Museum, the Brumos Pikes Peak entrant.

Stay healthy and we will see you in the Zone.

Porsche wins In capetown

I was down in South Africa when the 5th round of the E Grand Prix was be held in Cape Town on the 25th of February. With a bit of luck…. Well it’s not what you know, but who you know! …..I received an invite (& guest) to the VIP lounge to watch the race – What an experience!

The track was scenically set, once around the Green Point stadium, against the backdrop of Table Mountain. The 2.9km track saw top speeds almost at 240km/h. Lap times a shade over 1 minute for an average speed of ~160km/h.

My old motorcycle friend Andrew accompanied me – we completed the on-line forms and took the safety test in order to receive our accreditation. A few days before the race I went in to collect our tags, access and parking pass. In order to avoid traffic we took the motorcycle - lane splitting is legal here, so no problem to cut through traffic. It was great to be waved onto the closed roads and ride right up to the track and leave the motorcycle in the guarded VIP parking lot.

A short walk took us to the track and we explored a bit. Cars were on the track, but they are lower than the concrete barriers, so you can only hear them whistle past. So we headed on over to the “E Park”, where all sorts of electric bicycles, scooters, motorcycles and cars were on display. They even had a short test loop where you could take an e-car for a short drive. A really great add-on to an event like this.

It was then time to check in to the Boss / E Motion hospitality tent. Well it was more than just a tent – a real sturdy large 2 story air conditioned building. ….and here you can get

all the food and drink you might want. By my estimation there were near a thousand people in the hospitality tent, multiple bars and the food just kept coming!

Mid way through the morning we were taken to the pit lane for a walk through. Teams were charging the cars and repairing any morning accident damage – the Jaguar needed a total rebuild. Everything was very neatly laid out and well organised. The entire pit building structure is moved by the organisers from race to race. I was able to chat to the Porsche guys about the Gen3 drive train: Now equipped with a motor on front and rear: the rear is used for propulsion, the front for regenerative braking – all braking is now done by regen. Unfortunately this stiffens up the steering under braking.

There is a relatively long gap between the morning timed practice 12:00 and the race at 16:00 – allowing the cars to charge. At 15:30 we all went down to walk in between the cars as they waited on the grid. How often do you get to do that?

The race got underway just past 4pm and there was disappointment on the opening lap as the championship leader, Pascal Wehrlein in the Porsche, went out.

As the race progressed we were treated to a great duel between Jean-Eric Vergne (Penske) and Antonio Felix Da Costa (Porsche). They came up from mid field and swapped positions. Verne led until 2 laps before the end, when Da Costa pulled off a stunning high speed overtaking manoeuver and held off Verne to the flag.

march 2023 - Page 27

The party in the hospitality tent carried on for a while and eventually folks drifted out. A great opportunity to see a race and the cars from close up. Now whilst I like the sound of a howling 12 cylinder race car, I must say that the relative silence of the electric cars certainly allows you to hear the commentator much better! The electric motor emits a typical

Klaus Kreye

whine, also audible under braking due to regen, but is much less that the internal combustion engine. The absence of exhaust noise allows you to hear more tire squeal as the cars are pushed into the corners. Maybe we will become Formula E fans now?
