From The VIRPCA Executive nce again our Black Rock event has been a huge success due to our sponsors, attendees, volunteers, the Ucluelet community and committee members. With everybody’s hard work we raised just over $6,000 for the Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade and $11,600 for Tour de Rock – Cops for Cancer!

I hosted a BBQ for a group of Wild Rose members headed to Black Rock. Neighbors were a little uneasy when over 10 Porsches descended upon my front yard. We set up a little car wash station and removed a lot of bugs from their cars! Dinner was well received, but who can complain about BBQ Steak and mashed potatoes? Looks like we have room for more cars next year! I was unable to make it out for Thursday, but I hear the welcome reception was phenomenal. Doug Champagne has done an outstanding job over the years turning the Thursday welcome reception into a stellar hit! Despite a bit of drizzle we had a great turn out for the BBQ hosted by the Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade. The Ukee community mingled with VIRPCA members and enjoyed a fantastic bonfire and fireworks display. Saturday started out with a pancake breakfast put on by the UVFB. I was able to grab the last few pancakes before they headed out to the airport. The Car show went on and had a good turnout even with the rain! We managed to fill up the whole dock! I was able to sneak away and get some great photographs at the Driver Education event. All I could see was the giant grins on everybody’s face. The banquet was well received and Caren Cooper our National President said a few words. Our sponsors really outdid themselves this year. We had a lot of auction and door prizes this year, but unfortunately all good things must eventually come to an end. Every year I wish the event would just keep going a little bit longer! After a parade through town lead by the UVFB and RCMP we gathered for brunch and to say our goodbyes.

T

his edition covers Black Rock weekend and hopefully gives those who were not able to attend some idea of what they missed. It was my first time at the resort, and I enjoyed it, especially the HPDE (see pic) so I’ll be returning.

Please send your feedback of the weekend to the Black Rock committee via the email survey, so they can improve on anything for next year, or send your comments to virblackrock@gmail.com Congratulations to Dan Bourlet for organising this year’s Black Rock!

Thursday — Registration, Scotch Tasting, Welcome Social Sponsored by Vancouver Island Insurance Centres hursday’s events started with arrival and official VIR PCA registration at the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort manned by Black Rock committee members Dan Bourlet (chairman) and Dean Aikenhead, who checked registrations and organised waivers for signing of the various events and gave us our name badges etc. Then we were routed to various other tables to confirm and receive information on Autocross, HPDE and to receive a ‘goodie’ bag of gifts and any BR apparel that had been ordered. The Black Rock Oceanfront hotel rooms are well appointed and offer a variety of sizes to suit all needs. Obviously the main benefit of the hotel is it’s location in Ucluelet with stunning vistas of the west coast and the ocean. Later, there was a Scotch Tasting in the wine cellar followed by a Welcome Reception in the hotel lobby where the Mission Hill wine and Stanley Park beer flowed and excellent food from the hotel was well received. Those who chose to eat in the hotel restaurant, experienced some fine west coast cuisine along with fantastic ocean views (see below) where the patio dining was in use due to the excellent weather we enjoyed that day. A good start to the weekend indeed!

Friday — Autocross, Off-Road, BBQ & Fireworks Sponsored by Porsche Centre Victoria

I

n my 25 years of autocross, this year’s Black Rock Autocross was a first for me, as almost half the participants were first timers or novices.

The weather was cool and breezy but it kept the ‘man-eating’ flies away and the low clouds held off long enough for everyone to get in some dry runs. This creates a set of situations that can be difficult to overcome, thankfully I had a couple of seasoned volunteers (Chuck Hatt and Rick McConnell) and some other experienced autocrossers to help ‘herd the cats’. The course this year was a repeat of the last 2 years with a few ‘improvements’. I slowed it down by about 10 seconds (about 20kph.) with maneuvers that caught almost everyone off guard, leading to a host of DNF’s (did not finish). This means they missed a gate or went off course. These times are recorded but do not count towards fastest times. On the other hand, considering how many cones were out there, very few cones were hit (2 penalty seconds added to time). Sadly one cone gave its life in the line of duty, so the recipient of “Cone of Shame” will be revealed soon! The basic goal of autocross is improvement. Improvement of confidence, car control and ultimately ones time. With the help of the driving instructors, the novice drivers did just that. Some improved their times by 30, 40 or even 60 seconds. While that was happening, the experienced drivers were busy scrubbing there tires on their way to their fastest times. Fastest time of the day went to Hubert Brauckmann with 98.739 seconds, followed by Stirling McArthur, 102.158 and Tyson Johnson, 102.949.

Friday—Porsche Off-Road Event

W

hile the Autocross event was in full swing, I ventured with some other brave souls to the Off-Road event which was organised and provided by Porsche Centre Victoria’s Paul Rossmo (General Manager) and Gary Peever (Service Manager). I took my new Macan S while Paul and Gary brought two Cayennes— packed with bottled water and some splendid box lunches from the hotel for consumption later! We headed out of town for a few clicks and then turned off onto a Fire Service Road where it got very dusty, very quickly due to the dry weather in the area. We came upon some forestry staff maintaining the roads who were a bit bemused seeing these beautiful but dirty cars drive pass them, after which we made a brief stop for a stretch and to look at some First Nations’ totems and statues. The highlight of the drive ended up at Secret Beach, which was a beautiful small bay with long views to distant hills across the water. This is where we had some lunch when Paul told us of some hilarious stories of his travels with friends, which if you go on the event next year, I’m sure he will be open to telling again. After lunch we headed back to the hotel, where I dropped off Brad Blaney, my passenger for the trip, then I headed to the town as I was told they had a gas station with a hand-held wand wash to get all that dust off! Regardless of the dust, it was worth the trip, with good company, good food and great scenery. Our thanks to Paul and Gary of Porsche Centre Victoria.

Friday—BBQ, Bonfire And Fireworks

A

fter everyone had returned from the Autocross, Off-Road event and a HPDE driver briefing, at 7pm the Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade (UVFB) had readied a great BBQ above Big Beach (a very short walk next to the hotel) along with a roaring bonfire and some ingenious log-trunk fires (see pic). This was funded by sponsorship and donations to the Brigade and was also open to anyone from VIR PCA who couldn't stay the whole weekend. What is there to say about a BBQ? Great food—salmon, halibut, salads, buns, pickles, sauces, fruit, desserts and more! The weather was ‘misty’ (as the locals call it), but plenty of people certainly enjoyed the meal. Unfortunately, the mist dampened the fireworks in the beach sand and so some did not go off as planned and this gave us a learning opportunity for next year. Thank you and well done UVFB for a super time!

Saturday—Breakfast, Poker Rally, Walking Tour, Show & Shine, HPDE, Banquet—Sponsored By Porsche Centre Victoria

S

aturday morning started with a Pancake Breakfast in the hotel parking lot, which was organised by the UVFB. It was ‘misty’ again but there was soon a queue for the food and members were happy consuming their pancakes, sausages, fruit & coffee under the shelters. There were many conversations about the previous day’s events and what people were going to do that day—the Show & Shine, the Walking Ukee Poker Rally, the Nature Walking Tour or the High Performance Driver Education. The Walking Ukee Poker Rally was widely enjoyed by both members and the local Ucluelet businesses, where members collected playing cards in the hope of a good poker hand which browsing the many stores around the town. The people below won a prize for visiting all 18 locations:Darlene Kuik, Kim Smith, Duane Lawrenuk, Ray/Barbara Gumbal, Leslie Oman & Tony B. The following won the best hands::Dusty Fick, Tim & Sue Hagner, Barry McCallan, Duane Lawrenuk, Darlene Kuik. Although it was damp, the Show & Shine took place in downtown Ucluelet on the pier again this year and many of the locals took the opportunity to browse and see how awesome the members’ cars were looking—even in the mist. Wendy Woodley (our Up-Island Director) reported:- Four of us, a lady from Edmonton and Greig Christian & Metheral Gay, Chemainus, joined Shannon Szymczkowski, our guide on a lovely 1 hour walk on the Wild Pacific Trail on Saturday afternoon. This was a fantastic opportunity to experience the Trail and its ever changing scenery. We were amazed by endless opportunities to capture images of nature imitating art and we saw Alan Newbert along the trail, taking pictures. We were also treated to an eagle resting on top of a tree, way above us. Donations were accepted to continue extending the Trail and offer interpretive programming. The Trail starts just outside “Fetch” restaurant. I would do it again!

Saturday — (Continued)

T

he High Performance Driver Education event took place on one of the Tofino Airport runways where the orange cones had been totally rearranged after the Autocross of the day before. There was a HPDE briefing the day before given by Tony Booth at the hotel for newcomers to HPDE which was useful for all who attended. Notably, this year, HPDE Instructors came in from other regions under the auspices of Peter Beyeler & Steve Cropper to provide help and guidance to members wanting to improve their skills during ‘spirited’ driving. Those instructors were:Steve Cropper, Rick McConnell, Harry Taylor, Thom Carlson, Brent Bromilow, Lance Hogarth & Neville Jordison. Thanks to them for joining us at Black Rock this year! Many HPDE drivers took care of their cars by wrapping leading edges in plastic film or anything they brought with them, as the HPDE cars were able to overtake other cars and therefore some runway grit could spray up onto the cars. The drivers were split into 2 groups—Novices and Intermediate. Novices started off with some one-on-one laps with an instructor who provided feedback for them to improve as they drove more throughout the session. Then the novices, came in for a rest and out went the Intermediate drivers with optional instruction if necessary. During the day Novice drivers were moved up into the higher group when Peter or Steve thought they could benefit being in the next class. I started in the Novice class with my Macan as it was my first time at HPDE (but I do have some experience racing many years ago) and I did pass a few 911’s and got the goahead for the Intermediate group in the afternoon. However, where I was touching 175kph on the back straight, the GT2 & 3 cars in that group were above 200kph there I heard! I had the 3M paint protection film installed by Porsche Centre Victoria back in February after delivery, and I am glad as I did hear some stones thrown up when I was near other cars sometimes, so I can certainly recommend getting that done if members have any intention of doing HPDE or just want to protect their car from everyday road hazards. The club did buy some rolls of

Saturday — (Continued) thick wrap to use in the HPDE and many members did use that or had wrapped their car with their own choice of material beforehand. The UVFB provided the HPDE drivers with another BBQ (by donation) at the track which was a pleasant break for all and also assisted in helping to collect many cones after the event was over—and there were MANY cones laid out on the track! More thanks from VIR PCA are due to the following people that helped make our event run smoothly again this year. Of course Black Rock Oceanfront Resort staff , especially the following people there:Brian Johnson, Jenna Thompson and Danielle Stothers. Also thank you to Mark Fortune and other Tofino airport staff with their help enabling us to run the Autocross and HPDE events safely. Many thanks are also due to Doug Champagne, Mission Hill Winery and Stanley Park Brewery. Karla Robison, the District of Ucluelet’s Environmental and Emergency Service Manager, who supports the Ucluelet Volunteer Fire Brigade (UVFB) and has been the main contact for the District of Ucluelet/ UVFB items and tasks required for the Porsche Club events that have occurred in Ucluelet. Denise Stys-Norman the Executive Director of Tourism Ucluelet who was the person who worked at the Ucluelet display in the lobby and found many Ucluelet goody bag items for us! Thanks to Shannon Szymczakowski, who was the guide for the Wild Pacific Trail hike.

Saturday—Banquet & Auction

A

s everyone knows, it was Vancouver Island Region’s 20th anniversary this year, so the banquet and auction event on Saturday evening in the hotel ballroom was made even better this year by the attendance of the President of the Porsche Club of America, Caren Cooper who travelled from Texas to be at the event. and our Zone 6 representative Tim Hagner! Some fun and games ensued as the MC’s Norm Smith and Peter Beyeler joked with Caren, could she sing the Canada anthem? However, Caren was very impressed when the audience was able to sing the US anthem! Caren presented the club with a PCA flag that was to be signed by everyone at Black Rock.

RCMP member Norm Smith, and Peter hosted the auction items trying to get the best donations for each item as they could with Cops for Cancer rider RCMP Officer Donovan Tait modelling many items for the audience and in the end that was not too difficult as the bids were flowing pretty quickly—often with a slight competitive edge as the VIR members naturally wanted to keep the items within BC and some attendees from outside BC were determined to take them back with them! The auction items were many and included some track time at the new Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit and tires at cost price (from GAIN & Porsche Centre Victoria), radio controlled Porsche model cars, Porsche Selection clothing, oil changes, RCMP memorabilia, cases of wine, neon Porsche crest light, many pictures, posters and a Porsche watch (from Porsche Centre Vancouver), limited edition Porsche factory models, tire totes and much more! The VIR thank all those companies and individuals who donated items, goods and services to the auction, as we raised $11,600 for Cops for Cancer/Tour de Rock!! The VIR also presented awards to members Al Kyle and Conrad Peden for their service to the Club as well as prizes for the Ucluelet Walking Poker Rally. Musical entertainment was provided by Geoff & Tara Johnson. Left: Conrad with his award. Below: Neon Porsche light. Right: Norm Smith and ‘friend’

Sunday—UVFB / RCMP Parade, Brunch & Auction Sponsored By Porsche Centre Vancouver

O

n Sunday morning, the weather improved and the sun shone and a few members took the opportunity to give their cars a quick wash or wipe over before we all assembled in the hotel parking lot led by the RCMP and UVFB. A grand parade of Porsches started out from the hotel and drove slowly along downtown Ucluelet, many of the locals waved to us as both the RCMP and the Fire Brigade sounded their sirens to get everybody’s attention!

After the parade, everyone was back at the hotel and a lovely hotel brunch was served . Some people took their leave after the meal but most stayed on for the UVFB auction items that Norm Smith had held over from the Banquet. Once again the bidding was brisk and everyone, especially the UVFB was happy with the $6,000 raised for them at the end of the weekend.

O Wyman!

Other VIRPCA May Events :Bleue Moon Tour By Brad Blaney n Sunday, May 15, approximately 40 VIR members gathered for breakfast at Mary’s Bleue Moon Café, beside the Victoria airport on the Saanich Peninsula. The restaurant seated us at one long table, family style! Judging by the sudden quiet when the food arrived, everyone enjoyed their meal, I sure did! After breakfast we gathered in the parking lot for a group photo. Thanks again for your photographic skills

After some initial confusion queueing up in the parking lot, 18 Porsches headed south from the restaurant following various back roads and diversions. We made our way to West Saanich Road, then onto Prospect Lake Road and eventually onto Munn Road. Up to that point I kept the pace moderate to keep us all together. But once we hit the smooth pavement on Munn, I started driving with a little more spirit. Fearing I might lose somebody, I kept an eye on my rear view mirror and was pleased to see nothing but Porsches closed up right behind me. We got into a steady rhythm thought the curves over the Highlands and ended our drive in the parking lot of Western Speedway. Once in the parking lot drivers and passengers all hopped out and were quite satisfied just to visit and chat. A half hour passed before anybody thought to leave! Here are a few emails I received later in the day:“Just a quick note to let you know we had a great time at the breakfast and cruise on Sunday. So nice to meet some new fellow members. The route was excellent (never been on it) as we enjoyed the curves and stops etc. Well done and thank you”. “Had a good time today!”. “Today’s brunch at Mary’s Bleue Moon Café…Thanks for organizing another gem of a restaurant”. “Thanks for arranging a great breakfast and a fun drive”. “I think there was about a pound of pancake on Kathy's plate!” While the sky was overcast, the temperature was mild and there was no fear of rain. Perfect for us convertible drivers! We all enjoyed a tasty meal, a twisty drive and Porsche comradery!
