From The VIRPCA Executive

J

uly has been a very busy month! Brandi is now seven months old, and is growing like a weed. Currently she loves to drool all over her blue Porsche, I am not sure where she gets that from ;)

The Club also had a Top Secret Mission this July. Under direct orders from the PCA National Office, we had the responsibility to surprise one of the winners of the Spring Raffle. Once again someone from the Mid-Island had won the PCA Raffle! Rick Collopy’s name had been drawn and so, with a few phone calls we had his wife in on our cunning plan. Rick was currently out of town working, but was returning on the following Tuesday. I assembled a small gathering of VIRPCA members with the help of Wendy. When Rick’s airplane arrived we gathered just up the street from his house. Once we saw Rick pull into the driveway, we headed to his house and Rick, still in his socks was dragged out of the house where he was shocked to find out he had just won the PCA Raffle.

aybe you’ve noticed an increase in adverts within Porscher newsletter. Although some may consider it an intrusion into your ‘Porscheness’, it is a necessity if we want to fund bigger and better events for you. For example, with the advertising revenue, we can afford the better prizes you’ll see shortly nor could we subsidize the lunch at the VIMC track on August 13th and if members would like a VIR members track day at the new circuit, this is how we could fund some of it. So please, take a moment to visit our advertisers’ websites, they all have great products or services to offer us. Also, if you or your company wish to advertise , please contact me anytime.

991.2 Experienced

n a June Saturday morning, some Porsche Centre Victoria clients gathered at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit to try out the new 911 models — the 991.2 to be exact. The range of cars waiting to be examined and driven were:- 911 Carrera, 911 Carrera Cabriolet, 911 Carrera S, 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, 911 Carrera 4, 911 Carrera 4S, 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S. Porsche Canada made sure that the new models were shown off to their best extent by the inclusion of two very experienced instructors in Kies Nierop and Pierre Des Marais, both of whom I had met at Camp4 earlier in the year and can attest to their superb instructor skills and Porsche knowledge. There was a briefing in one of the circuit Clubhouse classrooms where Kies and Pierre described the changes to the new models, mainly the engines are now turbo-charged 3 litre, not naturally aspirated. However the engines are more fuel efficient and provide more horsepower. The front has LED light strips integrated into the air intake frame which has moveable louvres for cooling and the headlights have 4 point LED daytime running lights. At the back, you can identify a 991.2 by the new air outlets outside of the exhausts. The engine lid grille has a vertical design rather than the 3 horizontals previously. The Carreras have an option for rear steering too. Overall physical dimensions have not changed much. The interior gets a slight makeover, with the addition of the 918 like steering wheel which in the Sport Chrono PDK option, has a dial for quick access to Individual, Normal, Sport and Sport Plus modes and a new feature found in Formula 1 cars—a Push-To-Pass button (Porsche call it Sport Response) which sets all the systems to full sport mode for 20 seconds. There is a new PCM with a 7 inch screen, offering vehicle tracking and other useful features. Once the briefing was over, we split into pairs and took the cars on the local roads to Genoa Bay and back again, led by the instructors with useful walkie-talkie chatter along the way. We stopped a few times to change drivers and cars so we all got to try each model. I am no 911 expert, but the road ride was very comfortable in each car I tried. On our return to the circuit, we had a quick break and then gathered outside the pits ready to try them on the track! One by one we followed either Kies or Pierre around the track, again with great walkie-talkie commentary as to what to expect or do as we go faster—apexes, braking, acceleration, track position etc. Here was where we heard the true engine sound, as we pulled hard out of corners, I thought that there was certainly no turbo lag and the car gave everything expected of it. Of course Sport Plus is ideal in that situation and it was nice to hear the throttle blipping to match the engine revs as we down-shifted using the PDK paddles nicely positioned behind 9 and 3 o’clock on the steering wheel. At the end of the session, we all had enjoyed ourselves

immensely and experienced the track’s facilities too, which were excellent. Is the 991.2 for you? Look at the figures, it’s faster, more powerful, accelerates quicker and has a vast increase in torque. I suggest you contact Porsche Centre Victoria and arrange for some driving time to answer that question for yourself! Thanks to Porsche Centre Victoria for arranging a great session for myself and the other guests there, it was a blast!

Porsche Centre Victoria Becomes First Certified Porsche Classic Partner in Canada

O

n July 12th, Porsche Centre Victoria became the first Certified Porsche Classic Partner in Canada. Porsche executives from Germany and Canada were present at the dealership where Julia Recker the Porsche Classic Partner Manager and Alex Pollich, Porsche Canada President presented Peter Trzewik with a commemorative plaque to celebrate the event. Many PCA members attended that night and browsed the beautiful classic cars on display, the histories of which Paul Rossmo described. They included a 1958 356 Speedster, 1964 356C Cabriolet, 1973 911 Carrera RS along with a Carrera GT. In the workshop below the showroom, was a display of

models in various states of restoration including some other interesting cars such as a GT4 ClubSport. The evening festivities were helped along by some excellent food, drink and live music. It was a great night and VIR PCA wish to give our congratulations to Peter, Paul and the rest of the team in becoming the first Certified Porsche Classic Partner in Canada.

Another VIR Region PCA Raffle Winner!

I

t happened a few years ago to Mark Titterton who won a 911 Targa and now the Region’s luck has struck again with another winner in the PCA wide raffle!

Rick Collopy of Nanaimo has won his choice of a new 2017 718 Boxster S or a Macan GTS plus US$25,000, that’s not too bad for buying just one $50 raffle ticket. VIR Region President Martin Mansfield and a few others surprised Rick with the good news recently one Tuesday evening So after the dust had settled in Nanaimo, I asked Rick some questions about his win, hoping to get some inside information as to his secret…...

PORSCHER — JULY 2016

Page 8

Which model do you expect to choose? Undecided. How long have you been buying PCA raffle tickets? Since I first joined. How many did you buy this time? One, can you believe that! Will you keep your ‘old’ 911 Carrera? Not sure. You’ve been a PCA member since 2010, yes? Yes. Any trips planned in the new car? Not yet.

The surprise party for Rick and Gayle Collopy (photos by Martin Mansfield)

Will you keep buying PCA raffle tickets? Yes. But I think my luck has run out. And the big one……Will this be your or your wife’s car? Nope, I didn’t get an answer to that one!

Last Month’s VIRPCA Events Up-Island Canada Day

C

anada Day 2016 in the Comox Valley was celebrated with meeting at the Crown Isle Plaza at 11am, the usual monthly Cars & Coffee location. We had an excellent turnout of 26 members in 17 Porsches. A nice young man, in a crisp white apron, from Starbucks treated us with a tray (delivered to us in the parking lot) of their new berry refreshers, Cool Lime & Berry Hibiscus made with green bean coffee extract,

After a brief driver’s meeting, by Wendy, we set off on a 30 minute drive through Courtenay and Comox, including a stop at our “secret” location, spectacular Air Force Beach. Hope you enjoy the photos showing the amazing views. We then proceeded to our lunch location, at the home of John & Zoë Clark, who are long time Porsche aficionados. Lunch was enjoyed in their beautiful gardens, and included a Growler beer tasting of Comox Valley’s Forbidden Brewing Co. two organic beers, a Pale Ale and Pilsner. We were treated to some of Bev White’s “Cayenne Brownies”, yummy. John challenged our members with an automobile quiz. First prize, a 1 lt. Paulaner/Munchen stein was won by Gerhard Bosman, new member from Nanaimo, Second prize a Hofbrauhaus/Munchen stein went to Derek Nickel. By some very interesting coincidence, Derek told me he had visited this location in 2011, while touring Europe. Didier Moiner from Sidney was given a souvenir glass from Berchtesgaden, as the member who had come the greatest distance. We also had the PCA flag that was given to our club by Caren Cooper, President, PCA. when she attended Black Rock this May, we are working on getting signatures from all our members. All members signed a Thank You card for John & Zoe, with their name and Porsche model. Great day celebrating Canada’s 149th birthday.

VIP Rally & Rest Getaway, Oyster Bay Resort, Campbell River

S

aturday morning on June 18, five Porsches gathered just north of Victoria for our overnight VIP Rally and Rest Getaway. James Renfrew, the event organizer led the way in his 914 followed by three Boxsters and a 911. Alternating between the main highway and various back roads, we meandered our way up to Nanaimo. We only had to stop once, when a heater valve dropped down on James’s 914, dragging on the road. A quick fix with a bit of wire and we were on our way once more. While all the cars were convertibles, the persistent light drizzle kept all our tops up. In Nanaimo we met up with yet one more Boxster and enjoyed lunch at Original Joe’s Restaurant. Afterwards we proceeded north to Coombs, home of ‘Goats On the Roof’, where we did a bit of touristy shopping. I picked up a 1:18 scale diecast model of my car! From Coombs, we again continued north past Courtenay, through to our overnight accommodation, the Oyster Bay Resort just south of Campbell River. After checking in, we headed for dinner at Painter’s Lodge on the north side of town. We all enjoyed an unhurried tasty meal. By the time we were done and returned to Oyster Bay, we all called it a day. The next morning James departed at 6am to blast back to Victoria to join his Dad for the Father’s Day British Car Picnic in Victoria. The rest of us gathered at 8am (much too early for Bernie) and drove south to the Black Creek Diner just north of Courtenay. A small country restaurant serving hardy, traditional and yummy breakfasts!

The sky was overcast but the rain had abated, so we all put our roofs down and headed south for our next stop, the Father's Day Show 'n Shine at Qualicum Beach. That event draws a very large crowd and features 700+ cars. While predominately hotrods and American classics, many other collectable

cars are also featured and it was packed! With the crowds and so many cars to see, we said our goodbyes and all wandered off to get lost in the horde. While the weekend weather was mainly overcast and drizzly, we all still had some top down driving time. While the wet roads made it more of a social drive rather than a spirited one, we all had a great time meeting new folk, enjoying fine food and of course, the Porsche comradery!

Competition Corner—New Prizes!

T

o my surprise, we had no entrants for the caption contest last month, so I’m awarding Henning Wulff one of our brand new prizes for his amusing photograph (“Pass me the wrench” right) taken at Black Rock this year — well done Henning! Our new prize, a beautifully drawn poster shows the history of Porsche models from the Gmund Coupe to the new turbo models. I’m sure Henning will be hanging this somewhere special soon. It is a 36”x24” signed poster by famed illustrator Steve Anderson (see his advert in the newsletter), who has done work for Forza Magazine (Ferrari based) and Excellence Magazine (Porsche based). Steve has many other posters available and can arrange framing too if needed. He can also illustrate your own car from photos which is a really nice gift if someone has a special occasion coming up. Take a look at www.saillustrations.com for details.

So if you want to get your hands on one of these posters, please submit an amusing/interesting Porsche related picture, or maybe of your car in great scenery from a recent vacation. Please send it to me (highest resolution) at newsletter@virpca.org Or if you are a budding crossword compiler, how about a Porsche related crossword puzzle? Or if maybe a word-search puzzle is more your scene, then we will be happy to receive one of those too! PORSCHER — JULY 2016
