ummer might almost be over, but we still have a lot of fun and exciting events coming up! Imogen will be hosting our membership luncheon event. Please check on the website for event info / registration. The Vancouver Island Motor Gathering will be on September 18th at the VIMC. Details will be coming out shortly for members interested in attending as a group. My work has kept me more busy than usual this summer, combined with our baby, there has not been much time to get out and drive. However, I was able to take the Boxster to work the other week, but unfortunately there were major roadworks happening on the way to Ucluelet and the trip was a little less fun than it usually is.

lthough it was quite an organisational effort getting all the 140+ people and their cars to the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit this month, I hope all of you that attended, found it was worth it. For those that did not attend, there is more detail and photos in my report in this issue. Believe me, the Executive is eager to get more events like that happening and hopefully before too long, we’ll have a VIR Porsche track day there!

Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit Visit
O
n a Saturday August morning, over 140 people that had registered, gathered at the recently opened VIMC track—the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit , which is located northwest of Duncan in the Cowichan Valley. It was a beautiful sunny day as we arrived, one by one into the parking lot and parked around the perimeter fence and when everyone had checked in there were around 90 Porsches parked.
Brent Evans, the Track Operations Manager told us that our event had the most people attending there and the most cars of one marque that he had known for the new facilities and it was certainly great to see all those Porsches in the parking lot.
Above: This shows just a quarter of the members’ cars that were parked at the circuit for our event. Below: Members enjoying themselves on the off-camber corners that make the circuit so enjoyable
Facilities As guests were allowed at this event, for many people, it was the first time they had been to a purpose built track before and many expressed their excitement of being able to see the facility and watch the activity that was happening around the circuit’s members’ cars as they were either on the track or in the pits being tweaked by their owners. Other people looked at the cars on display in the showroom:- there was Greg Moore’s Indy car, a McLaren 570S (both owned by local Duncan businessman Pieter Baljet) and a classic Ferrari that was awaiting celebrity signatures so it could be auctioned off for the David Foster Foundation at a later date. As everyone was freely able to look at everything (except get in the pit lane for safety reasons), there was no actual formal tour by Brent as such. For those that said afterwards that they didn’t see some aspect of the facility (e.g. the control room), our Facebook page has many photos of the event taken by our members, so hopefully there should be something for everyone there. Here is the link to the Facebook album for the event or just do a PORSCHER — AUGUST 2016

search in Facebook for “Vancouver Island Region - Porsche Club of America”. Laps Once the VIMC members were able to take a break for their lunch, we asked the Porsche club members to get ready in their groups in the parking lot for the parade laps. Every driver had been assigned one of four colours when they checked in so we could have approximately 20-23 cars per colour group. Brent started up the track’s own Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport and led each group onto the track while the next group lined up ready to go. Each group had four laps around the track and of course some drivers were happy to drive with spirit and others were just as happy to take it a little easier (and cause a little back-up or two). However, as each group drove back into the parking lot from the track, it was apparent that everyone had big smiles on their faces and had enjoyed those laps along with their guests and fellow club members. Lunch Once everyone had completed their laps, the buffet lunch was brought out and as there was 140+ people to serve, the caterers did try to have people go up table by table, but of course that took some time. There was a shortage of pizza sometimes but as that was cooked down in the kitchen below it usually didn't take long for new ones to arrive. Prizes After lunch there was a free prize draw for attendees with a great prize donated by VIMC - the winner’ could choose between driving shoes or gloves, and two VIMC logoed golf shirts courtesy of VIRPCA. The two shirts were won by Tim Evans (Brent’s brother! - don’t worry The clubhouse balcony over the pit area afforded a great view of both the pits and the track itself
The big Clubhouse area was 95% taken up with our members that day
Brent did not draw that ticket), and Angie Polard. Brent Evans awarded Imogen Burr her choice of prize in the free ticket draw—driving shoes PORSCHER — AUGUST 2016
The grand prize was won by VIR Membership Director Imogen Burr and she chose the driving shoes! (Continued on page 8)

Congratulations to all three winners. The Future
The VIMC track expansion plans (see below) indicate a long straight into the wooded area over the crest of the hill and then some nice S bends and no doubt some more off camber corners too! It appears that it could be closed off and used separately from the current track to provide more flexibility for track operations and scheduling. Also, an off-road course is in the works for those who enjoy getting down and dirty! Summary I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves and from the survey results many people want the club to do this regularly, however VIMC is a private club and we would have to pay a not insignificant rental fee to do this again or host a track-day or hold autocross there. If anything is organised, you can be sure we shall advise the members as soon as possible. There are also some lessons to be learned in terms of logistics for such large numbers of attendees too—so things should get better the more events we hold! Organised / Written by

Gold River Run n August 6th, four club members left from Nanaimo for a spirited drive to Gold River. Along the route however, we were joined by other members in their Porsches waiting for us on the side of the road to make the group a total of 10 Porsches and 13 members.
The route from Nanaimo to Gold River, officially nearly 4 hours
Despite driving through what seemed to be a monsoon, we eventually made it to Campbell River and clearer skies where we stopped for a brunch. Before setting off afterwards on the leg to Gold River, Henning Wulff was presented with a framed poster which had been signed by the artist Steve Andersen. This prize was for his photo in last month’s newsletter.
Brunch in Campbell River PORSCHER — AUGUST 2016
The road to Gold River was most enjoyable with many twists and turns along mainly single lane roads with the occasional truck pull-out. There were some great photo opportunities too as we drove around Upper Campbell Lake, which if you are travelling alone, then it would be nice to stop and capture those views. At one point, the group got divided into two, as it was not possible for everyone to overtake some slower trucks and even taxis, but before long, we were all reunited again and the road to Gold River Page 11
was mostly dry and we encountered only minor delays due to some rough surfaces from ongoing road maintenance in a few places. At Gold River, the group had a quick pit stop at The Ridge overlooking Gold River, then drove down to the dock for a photo op where it started to rain and as it was gone 4pm, everyone started to head back home. Paint Protection Film Install
Y
ou bought your Porsche, maybe not as an investment, but obviously you want to keep the value as high as possible. One of the techniques for doing that is to install a paint protection film (PPF). The PPF is an clear adhesive film applied to areas of the car that are prone to damage by various road debris often thrown up by vehicles in front of your car.
Porsche Centre Victoria offer this process as an option when you buy your car from them. The PPF used is made by 3M and called “3M Vinyl Film Protection”, it is so tough that you cannot push a key through the material. You can choose from a Leading Edge Kit (aka a Half Kit) which includes front bumper, backside of mirrors, front half of fenders and front half of the hood. Also Cayenne, Macan and Panamera models get the cargo area lip covered. Or you can choose a Full Kit which includes everything in the Half Kit plus full fenders and hood.
As my old daily drive Cayenne suffered from some minor “road rash”, I decided to have the Half Kit applied to my new Macan just after I bought it in January 2016. So on a Saturday morning soon after, I took it to PCV and watched the whole process and took copious notes and pictures as it was my first article as Editor of Porscher newsletter. (August has been a slow news month, so I dug out this article!) Some tools used in the process
Chris Renosun is the specialist that PCV use to have the film applied, he is only one of 2 people on the Island that are 3M certified. He showed me the tools he would be using:- multiple rubber blades in various colours (which indicated the hardness of the rubber), a larger blade, 3 spray solutions—a baby shampoo solution for manipulation, an alcohol based solution for setting the film and a gel solution for temporarily holding the film on vertical bodywork and of course numerous wiping cloths. Chris first washed the areas of the car that were to receive the film and used an alcohol wipe to remove road tar or tree sap and if necessary, lightly used a 3M clay product to remove anything found. Then more soapy water and squeegee to check again. At this stage he will also point out any existing road damage in the paint surface that the film will not fix.
Chris has access to the EXACT templates needed to cut the film so that the pieces fit on the car precisely, so precisely in fact that he doesn’t have to cut the film. On some YouTube videos, you may see other installers cut the protection film ON THE CAR with an Exacto blade (yikes!). Using these precise templates all that is avoided thankfully! Chris stuck the film on it’s backing paper for the hood, to the workshop wall , then carefully pulled it away from the backing, spraying it all the time to keep it wet. He then applied it to the car being extra careful with the long pieces and used the gel solution to hold the end pieces in place while he worked elsewhere on the hood. Chris worked from the Porsche crest outwards with various squeegees, spraying over and over again to get the accurate position of the film before releasing the tack spots to apply them finally in their correct position. It’s Chris’ vast experience that he uses to know how much to spray with soap, alcohol or gel, how much to squeegee, how to remove bubbles that are air filled or water filled and when to peel back and re-seat. The edges are very important to seal, if he has a car over a weekend, he will go back 24 hrs later and check them otherwise he uses a heat gun on them to stick finally which he did with mine. I also had my front lights covered with the film, this included the headlights, LED indicator strip and fog lights. If you take a look at the front of your car and follow the paintwork around the lights and air intakes etc, you’ll see how intricate those templates have to be to cover the paintwork without a join. On my Macan, the turbo intercoolers have 3 sections which, when the film was about to be applied, looked like fingers to be squeegeed into position deep back into the intake—it was not an easy job believe me! The best example of how expert Chris works in my opinion, was the application of the film onto the front of the PORSCHER — AUGUST 2016

mirrors. As the mirror housing is so curved, you would think it is impossible to get a smooth result from the film. Take a look at the pictures of the before and after photos of the mirrors, it’s absolutely amazing. Chris worked pretty much non-stop from 9am-4pm and that was just for a Half Kit coverage. If you think you can do this yourself, I would think very long and hard, there are so many areas where all it takes is for that material to touch a dirty surface and it’s unusable. Plus you have to get access to the precise templates for your exact model and year otherwise someone is going to be using a sharp knife near your precious paintwork—no thank you! It was money well spent in my view, especially as I went to Black Rock and took part in the HPDE this year, I’m sure I would have a few paint chips by now. Contact Porsche Centre Victoria if you want to have your car protected by the 3M Paint Protection Film applied by Chris. Written by
Steve Fairbrother NB. Unfortunately, this article was not sponsored by PCV, I used my hard earned cash on the PPF.
