FEATURED Cannabis Distribution Takes Root in Yucca Valley BY LYNDA HERRINGTON

Yucca Valley, CA – Since the approval of proposition 215 here in California in 1996 there has been much debate over the distribution of marijuana. Communities have been concerned over its influence on people and abuse of the system set in place. On the other hand there are many benefits to those with illnesses that are assisted by the medical use of the plant. For many conditions people prefer the effective use of marijuana as a treatment for their illnesses. Some of theses include migraines, nausea, chronic pain, insomnia, glaucoma, depression, cancer, AIDS/HIV, anxiety, anorexia, asthma, multiple sclerosis, chronic muscle spasms, Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), arthritis, Crohn’s disease, seizure disorders, Parkinson’s disease, Cachexia, hepatitis C, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Types of products available are marijuana buds, edibles, concentrates, and oils. CAMS (California Alternative Medical Solutions) currently only offers the marijuana bud but does have people in the collective that cook the marijuana into food for those who can not smoke it or choose to consume it. “Seeds are still illegal to purchase within the United States,” D.J. Ross, executive manager of CAMS said. “To sell plants you must have a nursery license.” Currently neither plants nor seeds are offered by CAMS. Thirteen states have since approved the use of medical marijuana and another thirteen are pending legislative or ballot measures to approve it. Many in the Desert Communities are unaware that there is a local place to

receive assistance with the legal purchase, advice, and other information. There is a dispensary in Yucca Valley named California Alternative Medical Solutions (CAMS). Although CAMS supplies medical cannabis to those with physician recommendations they also offer other services as well. These consist of Eastern medicine, herbal and homeopathic remedies, acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractic adjustments, yoga, and more. These services provide a larger range of alternative medical help as opposed to many other dispensaries. CAMS is also one hundred percent nonprofit with a board that meets quarterly. The proceeds go into helping the local community in many ways to improve the community and education for children. “We donate to the animal shelter, the TAY center, Yucca Valley High School, the Boys and Girls Club, groups that deal with children, after school programs, assisted an elderly woman with a move, and a defense fund,” Ross said. Ross would also like to see a modern, updated skate park for the community kids and sidewalks for Yucca Valley. “A skate park with longer hours and more to do could help prevent kids boredom since there is nothing to do in this town for kids but do drugs and commit crimes,” Ross said. Before establishing CAMS Ross worked for Morongo Basin Mental Health as a drug and alcohol counselor and mental health specialist. Ross also worked with children in the First 5 program. After that he went into juvenile probation for two years. PAGE 20

Gay Pride a Success BY LYNDA HERRINGTON

Joshua Tree, CA – On the evening of Saturday, June 27, 2009 the Joshua Tree Gay Pride festival, “In the Name of Love,” commenced and as 6:00 p.m. rolled around, people starting pouring in. It was slow going at first, but as the evening wore on, the fenced area behind Studio Godot filled with hundreds of people showing their support, networking, and socializing. It was a wonderful sight to see so many not only from our local community but from all around Southern California. There were many first time pride event visitors as well as many that had attended other events. The event was organized and put together by Sydney McCutcheon. Community members that helped with the event were Mike Lipsitz, Bob Bowden, Shery Elf, Andy Woods, president of the MB Cultural Arts Council, and Ted Quinn to whom “orientation is invisible,” Lipsitz said. Paul Krassner – Dancing with Cannabis and the Dead SUNNY SUNDOWNER’S INTERVIEW WITH “60’S COUNTER-CULTURE LIVING LEGEND, YIPPIES CO-FOUNDER”

Sunny Sundowner (SS): I thought we could touch on, among other things, the un-official “Anthem of the Sixties,” or “Sex, Drugs and Rock n’ Roll,” but I wanted to do it in reverse order… Paul Krassner (PK): OK. SS: Do you feel that the rock n’ roll music of the sixties helped lead to a revolution of spiritual consciousness in the West? PK: Well… At the time that the hippies started turning on with rock n’ roll, what was going on WAS a spiritual revolution. My good friend Lenny Bruce had a line: “The people are leaving the Church and going back to God!” (Laughter) SS: No wonder he pissed off the government! PK: Yeah, that was part of it… It’s just that there was no law against blasphemy, so

they had to get him for the language that he used… The main word they persecuted him for was the same word that Country Joe & the Fish popularized at the original Woodstock Concert with their infamous “Fish Cheer”: “Give me an F!...” and of course you know the other three letters. So, rock n’ roll music… I’m eclectic in my musical tastes, but if I had to choose only one, rock n’ roll is my favorite. Partly because of the association with the counter-culture, and partly because- I belong to a “Secret Army”… That only dance when they’re alone… And rock music made me want to dance- especially if I was stoned. I went to Egypt in 1978 when the Grateful Dead played at one of the pyramids. I was hanging out with (Grateful Dead Manager) Bill Graham there. I had already taken acid and he gave me a ‘marijuana cookie’

SS: They had them back then, eh? I thought it was just “brownies!” (Laughter) PK: Whatever you’d want to bake! And… we were both back in the area between backstage and the stage itself… dancing- And he confessed to me that that moment was the first time he had ever danced in public. I said: me too! But I think that the music provided the missing link between your body and your spirit. It united those aspects. So many of the songs were about “optimism, hope and the mystery itself.” So it was an integral part, not just of spirituality, but also of politics. There were songs about racism, the Vietnam War, about how cruel humans could be. These songs were a response to those things saying we wanted to replace ‘fear’ with ‘joy’ and the music was a soundtrack for that process. PAGE 22

ARTIST IN FOCUS Artist Copper, bronze, zinc, steel and iron may not be every artist’s materials of choice, but Davis Murphy has had an intense passion for industrial materials ever since he grew up building and working on boats in Old Greenwich Connecticut and Miami, FL. Now living in Yucca Valley, Murphy, 54, has a national trail of work behind him, from a 60-foot atrium of life-size metal mountain climbers in Vail; to a school of mermaids, sharks, and pirates in Miami; a giant zinc lion head in Manhattan; and a 90-foot herd of thundering copper horses in DeBeque, CO. Mr. Murphy studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, focusing on classical drawing, sculpture in clay, and copper and steel welding. After Pratt Murphy moved to Miami, worked a job making copper sculptures, and having sailed since childhood, gravitated to the Coconut Grove boat basin. The Grove was the art center of Miami in the late 1970s, Murphy purchased and lived aboard a refugee boat big enough to create large scale artwork on. During the late 1980s in Miami, he co-founded Artifacts, an experimental gallery, and contributed to major nightclub art environments and installations

life for a major feature in the 1987 issue of Interview. Seeking to work more with the “hard stuff”, Murphy’s skills of 16th century metallurgy emboldened his technique of multiple heatings and manipulation of forms. Melting bronze over castings and copper and brass sheet, his new work birthed a visceral life-like outer “skin” supported by steel armatures. This is a similar technique used to create enormous works like the Statue of Liberty, though Murphy has taken the copper skin texture to a more life-like level, and keeps the copper from oxidizing green by applying heat and varnish. An exhibit at an antiques show in Florida attracted the attention of Richard Kessler, the hotel entrepreneur who co-founded the Days Inn chain and now owns dozens of 5-star resorts across the country. This led Mr. Kessler to commission Murphy to construct life-size “extreme” mountain climbers made of copper ascending a 60-foot atrium for his Beaver Creek Lodge in Vail, CO, completed in 2002. That same year he began his largest work – and the biggest outdoor sculpture in the state - a series of 18-foot

of one of the country’s largest wild horse sanctuaries, with more than 36,000 acres set aside for wild mustangs. Murphy’s stunning herd of sculptures leap and gallop with their manes and tails flying in the wind. The six horses form a 90-foot herd that head down a mountain and cross a road leading to a river where coyotes, bands of wild turkeys and massive elk gather. Another piece he constructed on the property is of two stallions fighting with front hooves and heads 14-feet high in the air. At 32-feet long, this piece is high enough to drive a car under. Due to the sheer size of the horse sculptures, Murphy needed to work onsite for years on end in the canyon, where the weather goes from blistering to blustery in the course of a day. “I’ve always felt a connection to the wild power and refined beauty of the horse,” says Murphy. “They have a physical presence and emotional intelligence that makes for such a unique relationship with people. Working onsite changed the nature of the work. Seeing the silhouettes and the mountains and sky around them made me see them

Even at triple digits, I think this is the coolest place I’ve ever lived. Hi, I’m Sandra, and I’ll be your new editor here at American Free Journal and Desert Valley Star. I’ve been coming out to this surreal little slice of high and low heaven for over ten years, but never thought I’d live here. A big city gal, I’ve lived in some wild places at the best of times – NYC’s East Village and Soho in the punk/art heyday of the 70s; Miami Beach’s Art Deco district when Scarface was shooting its way out and Miami Vice was tanning its way in; Nashville in the 90s where I worked with Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn and The Dixie Chicks; and have spent some of the 00s in Los Angeles making films and a record. Along the way I wrote about it all- in major dailies, Billboard, Rolling Stone, Variety, Entertainment Weekly and Country Music Magazine.

I reconnected with my Cherokee roots and helped get a Grammy category established for Native American Music. I’ve written two books, got a grant to write a third from the BMI-Woody Guthrie Foundation, produced a tribute record with some famous names (John Densmore of The Doors, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams III) and have even been curating some art shows - I have a museum show coming up in December in Santa Fe. In short I love to make, and write about, a scene. Which brings me to the desert. The first time I came here I had won a trip that included a spa hotel stay in Palm Springs (at the Spa Hotel) and a Mustang convertible. It sounded great, until they flew me here in August. I spent the days in the cold mineral pool and driving around at dusk through the empty streets, over the San Andreas fault, and into Joshua Tree Park. The cinematic bleakness and beauty was overwhelming, but there wasn’t much else to do or see. Dry as dust I thought. A few years later my then roommate Rockabilly Filly Rosie Flores brought me along for a raucous weekend at Pappy & Harriet’s and Rimrock Cabins where my Nashville pals Lucinda Williams, Jim Lauderdale and the late great Duane Jarvis stayed. Alright I thought, there’s cool music and art and even Western movie sets here. I get it. It’s got it all.

In December 2008 my artist beau – who makes huge horse sculptures and I finally made the move away from the LA noise to the hi-desert hum. And boy have I found a scene. I am knocked out by the knock out people that live here – artists, musicians, writers and radicals (Paul Krassner anyone?). A flea market that rivals anything anywhere; a political scene with just enough corruption; world class music venues; famous dead rock stars; ghosts of The Rat Pack; Indian tribes making history and millions; all nestled into some of the most awe inspiring landscape in Creation. The only thing missing was an art film house, so a few months ago, I started a weekly film night called Hwy 62 Cinema at the funky Red Arrow Gallery in JT. I’m happy that it has been embraced by the community and I am getting some great local celeb hosts screening their favorite films. What I hope to bring to this fledgling paper is the energy that already surrounds it – vortex, manic and high. We’re upping arts and politics coverage and bringing in some world class contributors. This 4th of July week we appropriately touch on Freedom issues that – agree with them or not – are what this country is founded on. With the slow death of the daily, we are aiming to be the new news alternative, covering issues that matter to all of us right here, right now. Let us know what you think, like and dislike. Just like Uncle Sam, we need YOU. ■

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

NO ATTEMPT HAS BEEN MADE TO CORRECT SPELLING, GRAMMAR, AND COMPOSITION. WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT WE GOT.

Hello Dean, What an article!! In the years since incorporation [Yucca Valley], I have never seen such a continued desirous reach for power and control. I served on the committee to incorporate Yucca Valley, the General Plan Committee, etc. and when I watch this council, I am amazed that it has not been recalled (excluding Lori Herbel) for some of the decisions it has made that were found to be in the wrong. I have seen a member of the council falling asleep, one or two that are trying to catch up because they did not read the material prior to the meeting, those that speak, and when they do, it shows that they have not studied or researched the material, and then the duly elected Mayor that believes the will of the people is not to be tolerated. That he has been elected to make the best decisions, without

listening to the people? Last laugh? How many backs were turned on him when he made this statement and others? How many left the room with disgust because he was usurping his power and could not contain himself. Who cares if he apologized later! That was to try to save face. Fat chance! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your outstanding sense of reality was great. May God bless your day and keep you in His care. Laurine ■■■■ People, When I read your paper it made sense. You see, I was at the Yucca Valley town council meeting where the two men were ejected and I was shocked. One man was booted out because he laughed. The other guy got the boot cause he said “why not put it to a vote.” The problem is the way the

“other” newspaper reported the show. They didn’t mention that anyone got ejected. Then in the editorial later they slapped around Lori Herbel by twisting around the facts as if it was her fault the guys on the council wanted to change the rules to prevent her from being mayor. Now, who am I going to believe? The newspaper that reports the truth (yours) or the one that gets it wrong (Hi-Desert Star) Please send me a subscription. I want to support you all as best I can. Franklin Weston Arnoldi ■■■■ Hey, I have an idea. Why doesn’t the city council of Desert Hot Springs use the Jewish Temple building there for a health clinic for poor people who have no insurance? TOM’S BIZ TIPS Sometimes Shrinkage is Good BY TOM GREEN

As a California small business owner, you are paying the highest tax rate in the country except in some special circumstances. For example, in Hawaii, for a married making over $400,000 the rate is now the highest at 11% versus California’s 9.3%. T h e problem with California’s is it kicks in at the unusually low number of $47,056 and this, coupled with a sales tax that starts at 7.25% puts California small business owners at a competitive disadvantage. Recently, I spoke of the business owners’ challenge with lawsuits over the course of their business life, yet insurance can cover about 80% of those costs or exposures. Not so with taxes, though. As they say, “You can’t escape death or taxes.” Well, that is not entirely true. With good tax planning you can lower your tax obligation significantly. I realize this is a very boring topic to most and especially to the entrepreneurs and owners of small business yet with such a significant portion of your overhead in the form of one tax or another tax planning should command some of your time. Historically, a small business has been a great vehicle for lowering your taxes because almost everything connected to it is deductible and with good records you could connect most of what you spend to the business in one way or another. Now with every level of government thirsting for revenue many deductions are sure to go bye bye.

With all the taxes California charges it is still spends 12 billion more than it takes in and is on the verge of bankruptcy. California also leads the nation in outflow since 2004 we have lost 1.5 million ... tax payers and at the same time added 2.4 million no or low tax payers for example infants and lower paid immigrants. One tax move that many have been making is to leave California all together for a more favorable tax jurisdiction such as Washington state or Texas. This is, of course, a very drastic measure and there are many things to consider. Even if moving is not in the

With good tax planning you can lower your tax obligation

cards for you, what I am really recommending is you look for ways to make your business more portable. The obvious choice is more use of the internet and other mobile tools that allow you to work from every where or anywhere. I say this even with the push to tax emails out there. Along with more portability I am suggesting a purge of all unnecessary expenses. Take a critical look at each expense line. I cut a couple thousand of automatic charges that I rarely used by just looking at them closely. This may seem like an odd time of the year to talk taxes, yet one tax tip is to have different entities with different fiscal years to spread the tax burden. With our C corporations fiscal year just ending, I was looking at it, so I naturally have it on my mind. To your business success. ■ tom@americanfreejournal.com

Teresa’s adopted son, Dereck is now 24 and living in Florida. She is now the creator and owner of the new Melton Clothing Company which make the Wee Bit Irish brand. She is a survivor of throat cancer. Her business partner, Debra Chrastka may be a Yankee born in Chicago, but has lived in Riverside County for 15 years. Her mother was a very popular dancer in Chicago during the 1920s and 30s. Her father was an engineer there but died last May of lung cancer.

Debra has a son, John, 25, who has his degree in business. Debra’s been a successful property owner here for a decade and rents eight houses in Desert Hot Springs, Bermuda Dunes, La Quinta, and Mexico. For the past three years now they have been operating Loving Touch Pet Sitting which serves Coachella Valley as well as the Morongo Basin. They take care of vacationing residents’ pets which also includes other services: watering plants, refilling bird feeders and transporting pets for emergency trips to the vet in Indio. They are bonded and insured members of several Chambers of Commerce. This now includes being Certified with Pet Sitters International. For 20 years PSI has been serving 8,000 members in the U. They both love this desert for its serenity, friendly people, and dry climate. To contact either of these active desert women: Teresa 760-574-5359, Debra ‘Debeye-do’ at 760-485-7446. ■

Letters to the Editor bought for $7 million three years ago is still a vacant lot full of weeds. Since Supervisor Ashley spent another $7 million on the Homeless Warehouse last year instead of spending it on the health clinic there, maybe the city council of Desert Hot Springs can find a way to make a silk purse out of a sows ear by using the Jewish Temple for poor peoples services. Or would tearing it down and starting over be less expensive? Leslie “Cranky” Washington ■■■■ RE: Yucca Valley Town Council Succession There has been much confusion regarding the Town Council selection of Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore. I would like to set the record straight. The Town’s municipal code clearly represents historical policy dating back to our incorporation in 1991. This historical policy has been codified through an ordinance to allow a rotation among the Council. The intent of the ordinance is clear: “It is the intent of the council to rotate the position of mayor and mayor pro tempore through the legislative body to provide each council member the opportunity to serve.” In order of votes received, the 2006 election winners were Chad Mayes, Bill Neeb and Lori Herbel. Neeb served as Mayor after the election,

PAGE 5

Mayes now serves as Mayor Pro Tempore, and according to the intent of the municipal code, I am next in line for the historical rotation to Mayor Pro Tempore in December. I am presently seated on the dais according to the historical Council rotation. Contrary to reports, the Town Manager brought this matter to the Council by requesting an interpretation of the ordinance. The gentlemen on the Council made the following comments at the June 9 Council meeting: “I think the positions should be earned”, “You should not be able to automatically rotate”, “Mayor should be in concert with the policy movement and ideals of the majority of the Council”, “Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore is not an entitlement by nomination”. The historical Council rotation has worked peacefully for the past 18 years, so why “throw it out” now as the Mayor directed? The position of Mayor should not become a political position based on vague approvals that foster issues of discrimination. Future Council members deserve the same opportunities to serve as past and present Town Council members have historically received. Lori Herbel, Town Council Member, Yucca Valley ■■■■

Route 62 Vintage Marketplace Everything Old Is New BY CARLY PELOQUIN TEEN REPORTER

Yucca Valley, CA – The Route 62 Vintage Marketplace is a charming antique shop located on Highway 62. With its bright oranges and contrasting purple colors it is easily one of the most noticeable Vintage Markets in the Morongo Basin. The beginnings of this special landmark can be found in its loving owner Dawn Blevins. She purchased the building in 2004 and is the owner and operator of the whole place. Dawn Blevins has been a resident of Yucca Valley for 17 years. Five and a half years ago she decided to open the Route 62 Vintage Marketplace. When she first moved to Yucca Valley and had trouble finding a job, she went into waitressing. But, Dawn soon discovered that it wasn’t what she wanted to do. She was terrible at waitressing, so she decided to pursue art. Dawn started out with floral and design. She worked the entire time out of her kitchen. From floral and design she moved onto reimaginated art. Dawn described this as taking pieces of furniture and creating new furniture out of it. This was also done out of her kitchen. She worked in her kitchen for ten years. In the Route 62 Vintage Marketplace many examples of re-imaginated art can be found. Tables made out of old doors; cabinets with old posters on the sides are only a couple of the types of things that can be found there. There is also a lot of recycle, assemblage, and license plate art done by her husband Dennis Blevins. Dawn’s store has been featured in the July issue of British Vogue for the décor that can be found there. She also has several awards from the community. But her favorite one is the Women Helping Women Award.

“I love helping women starting new careers and also starting new lives,” she says. Some of the ways that she has helped other women is by assisting them in starting their own business and aiding them through hard times in their lives. The Route 62 Vintage Marketplace is also home to the Studio 62 Gallery. The gallery features work from 10 different local artists. It plays host to around eight different art shows a year. A wide variety of things can be found there from jewelry, woolen purses, and recycled art. Many of the things that are featured in the gallery are for sale so the public can have a chance of owning one of those special pieces. The Market has antiques from all over. There are 33 different antique dealers who work with the Route 62 Vintage Marketplace. Dawn also looks for antiques to purchase and sell. She says, “Wherever we go we look for stuff. It’s an addiction.” Throughout the shop, nifty antiques such as vintage clothes and purses and things that can be used in one’s house can be found. Dawn is also a color specialist, she picks colors for local buildings and homes throughout the Morongo Basin. Almost all of the businesses along Highway 62 were given color recommendations by Dawn. Dawn Blevins is a person of many talents. She is the owner and operator of the Route 62 Vintage Marketplace, a talented artist and antique dealer. But one of her favorite things to help with is the Women Helping Women’s group and contributing to the community. ■

JOSHUA TREE - 29 PALMS Super Size Shammie Don’t be Fooled by Others… .

WHAT’S THE DEAL? Well there’s not much to say about today’s deal. We’ve all seen the commercial. Here’s the thing. You can get a Full-Size, actually it’s supersized Shammie for just $2.99. Get two for $4.98…check it out, as the TV shows…they are great!

Atomic Veterans

FULL SIZED SHAMMIE FOR JUST $2.99 Made in Germany. Don’t be fooled by others on the market that just don’t do the job AND are more than triple the price!

BY FREDDY GROVES

If you were an Atomic Veteran and were sworn to secrecy about the atomic blasts you witnessed between 1945 and 1962, that secrecy oath has been rescinded. And, if you have service-related medical issues because of that service, you might be due compensation. In 1990, Congress passed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act and the requirement for secrecy was voided while compensation was established. Unfortunately this has stayed under the veil for a long, long time. The Radiation Exposure Compensation Program has a Web site: www.usdoj.gov/civil/ torts/const/reca/. Look the site over carefully -- the compensation qualification requirements are strict if you want to apply. There are applications to fill out, of course, and you’ll need a lot of documentation to support your claim, especially medical evidence. But the check you could receive is significant, depending on your particular service. You could receive: • $50,000 if you worked downwind of weapons testing in cer-

tain parts of Nevada, Utah and Arizona. • $75,000 if you participated onsite in the weapons tests in Nevada, Pacific, Trinity or South Atlantic. • $100,00 if you were a uranium miner or millworker in a number of states. Additionally, if you are the child or spouse of an Atomic Veteran who has died from those service-related medical problems, the check would come to you as compensation for your loss. There is another site you need to look at, too: National Association of Atomic Veterans, Inc. (www.naav.com). This is a comprehensive site, and I suggest you make it your first stop. Read the specific duties, dates and locations that may qualify you as an Atomic Veteran. According to NAAV, there are 195,000 of you who might not know about the oath and the compensation. Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. ■ (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

DESERT LOVING Pump It Up

Eagle Mountain Assault

Your Desktop

BY BARBARA RENTON

™

Will bunny and birdie be evicted?

Yucca Valley, CA - Eagle Mountain near Desert City, CA has been getting quite the attention these last 25 years. Donna and Larry Charpied have had little time to harvest their jojoba crops for their struggle to maintain their community’s peace and quiet. First it was the Kaiser Ventures dump, owner of the now defunct iron ore mine, which wants us all to enjoy Los Angeles County’s 20,000 tons of garbage (every day for the next 100 years) put into these pristine canyons. Now it is the Eagle Crest Energy Company who wants a giant pump to draw 1,300 MW electrical energy from unknown amounts of gallons of water, 1,572 feet below the surface by the year 2012. According to their website www.eaglecrestenergy.com, they call Eagle Mountain “the most dynamic of electricity markets in the U.S. They are claiming to convert a ruined landscape by the mines into a “regional asset. Without the Pump Storage Project and Kaiser dump projects, it is already an asset to the people who make up this desert community. “The mining done there has ruined the area anyway, reasons Eagle Mountain Energy Company President Steve Lowe, “So we may as well use it for energy. He could not speculate how much money this may make his company and their stakeholders. Also in his telephone interview, Pres. Lowe said the water used to fill the initial fill of their pumping station would come from Chuckwalla Valley, not water used by the Coachella Valley. He said the LA garbage being targeted for this area is not any of his doing and will be a little ways away from his pumping station, so they will not mix. I’m sure that’s how the Appalachian Mountain-top Removal Project by coal companies sold that to its community while mil-

lions of gallons of toxic sludge spilled into their well water in the mid-Eastern states recently. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) gave Eagle Crest the permission to ’study’ its plans in 2005 and August 2008. Their Draft License Application (DLA) was filed last June with their final license applied for June 22, 2009. Their website claims that there’ll be no contamination of ground water since they’ll have closed pipes from 1,100 feet to 2,500 feet. But does that account for our monthly earthquakes? The ECEC website also gives the reason why for this project: statewide peak demands (expected to grow in a decade by 890 MW/yr), “meeting society’s ever-increasing demand for energy.â€? If the Bureau of Land Management truly does have 130 more applications out there for solar, wind, and geothermal projects here in the California desert to use up every spot of open land, this could mean the end to anymore artistic views and the hopes many had to move here to get away from the cities. The greed of utility companies as big business may make us pay the final cost with our health and peace of mind, unless we demand less to get more from our state. â–

“We’re almost there, big guy.” Good. I can’t wait. (increased panting) “It’s right up here on the left. Oh no, it’s empty. They’ve moved!” The car kept on moving past the store. Dog barking frantically! “It’s over here, it’s over here! I can see it. I can smell it. Right across the street!” But the human failed to understand and kept on driving. The dog settled down with a few well chosen growls and whimpers. “If only humans could understand what four letter words sound like in dog talk.” Thankfully, the human got the general idea and checked around and was completely surprised that they had missed the sign across the street. “I am amazed that I missed that big blue bone over the door.” Dog yelps, “Let’s get going. Let’s get going. Bones-n-Scones…just thinking about all those food smells makes me drool. And I want to see me and my friends on the wall. And there’s a nice lady there too” A nice lady indeed. Owner Kathy Hart started Bones-n-Scones about 10 years ago with the notion of a store that only sells high quality pet food that she can trust. But another part of that dream was to make and sell high quality pet treats. And they do, in fresh, frozen, raw or cooked. Much to tantalize the long noses.

Just walking into the place, you can feel the good vibes. Really. You know what I mean. After talking with Ms. Hart for only a short time, it becomes apparent that she cares deeply about animals being properly fed a nutritious diet. It is important to know the source of the protein, particularly since the Chinese food scares in the past months. Hart does her homework and knows which producers to trust and which to avoid. Think how valuable that is. A big weight of confusion is lifted from the customer’s shoulders. This is a Pet Nutrition Center, not a typical pet store. It is certainly not like the big chain stores like PetCo. Those stores are driven by the bottom line, period. Bones-nScones is not driven by greed. It is driven by Kathy Hart’s love and deep caring for animals. The rest takes care of itself. Doesn’t that feel good already? While I was at Bones-n-Scones, several humans and dogs came in, all sniffing the air, some sniffing the pallets of big bags of dog food. It is fascinating to watch normally territorial animals leave the ego posturing at the door and get along without any prompting from humans. Humans and animals look up at the huge collage on the wall, dozens and dozens of photos of friends bound together by this one little store. “Finally,” grumbles dog, “I can’t believe how difficult it is to train these humans.” I ask you: What other pet food store, or even a pet store, proudly displays photos of their animal customers? Doesn’t that tell you all you need to know? Bones-n-Scones is now across the street from the former location. They are at 577 East Sunny Dunes, Suite 8, Palm Springs. Hours are M-F 9-6 and Sat 9-5. You can call them at 760-864-1133. Look for the big blue bone over the door. And pay attention to your small friends. ■

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Get your facts together and become familiar with them before you have to face up to that interview. The better prepared you are, the easier it will be to make that important impression. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) New information might warrant changing your mind about a recently made decision. Never mind the temporary confusion it might cause. Acting on the truth is always preferable. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a loving atmosphere for those you care for could pay off in many ways. Expect to hear some unexpected but very welcome news that can make a big difference in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Stepping away from an old and seemingly insoluble problem might be helpful. Use the time to take a new look at the situation and perhaps work out a new method of dealing with it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re still in a favorable goal-setting mode. However, you might need to be a little more realistic about some of your aims. Best to reach for what is currently doable. The rest will follow. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A setback is never easy to deal with. But it could be a boon in disguise. Recheck your proposal, and strengthen the weak spots. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) What you might call determination someone else might regard as stubbornness. Look for ways to reach a compromise that won’t require a major shift of views on your part. What you don’t spend on what you don’t need will be available for you to draw on should a possible (albeit temporary) money crunch hit. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Staying close to home early in the week allows for some introspection about your social life. Sort out your feelings before rejoining your fun-time fellows on the weekend. legal if taken as a doctor prescribed medicinal. But sadly, this herb is not federally legal. And THIS is a big deal indeed. But back to the movie musical. Not just a clever send-up of a goofy misfire of an intended cautionary tale, at its core it made me think about big-brother, group-think, media lies, government Gestapo tactics, pharmaceutical lobbies and especially the core issues of personal freedom that were once near and dear to our founding fathers (and not just hemp farmer George Washington). For me, the heart of this clever spoof was really about mocking a society that lives in and in fact embraces a culture of fear. The final lyrics ring too true: “And when the reefer has been destroyed We’ll go after Darwin and Sigmund Freud And sex depicted on celluloid And communists and freaks! When danger’s near Exploit their fear The ends will justify the means!”

I never saw the popular stage musical on which the film is based, but I had big fun watching the DVD in the privacy of my home theater. And you don’t have to be stoned to get the full rush of this nutty foray into layered social satire that dances smoothly into moments of high (no pun intended) farce. The original black & white 1930’s film is included in the DVD and there’s an amusing cast commentary that includes Kristen Bell, Christian Campell, Neve Campbell, Alan Cumming and Steven Weber. By the time the film ended, I had the munchies and the DVD case smelled like licorice. ■

As almost everyone knows, the original “Reefer Madness” film was initially presented as an ultra serious, anti-drug warning aimed

at parents of high school kids (who were overplayed by actors in their late 20s and 30s). In reality, it was an exploitation film disguised as a high-minded excuse to sample a lurid lifestyle and forbidden images. This pseudoserious expose¥ w a s s o o v e rwrought and overthe-top that the film itself, instead of the intended cinematic cautionary tale, became an excuse to light up and get seriously silly. The anti-drug message was lost in a haze of hemp. Marijuana and movies have changed a lot in the intervening decades. Today, even common street-corner marijuana is far more potent than the home grown or Mexican weed of past decades. Experts say that the potency factor, compared to even a decade ago, is by multiples of ten. Strong stuff that can affect people in a multitude of ways. And here in California, it’s in the news again in a wide variety of breeds and forms that are California

THE REAL “HIGH” SCHOOL MUSICAL? Showtime’s 2005 “Reefer Madness The Movie Musical” hooked me on first toke, er, take. This hilarious film that you’ve probably never heard of deserves the same cult status that the 1936 source material already has.

Guide Dogs Get The Grant BY JAMES VALENTINA

On Friday, June 26, 2009, Guide Dogs of the Desert was the recipient of the Elks National Foundation Gratitude Grant presented by the Palm Springs Elks Lodge 1905. This is the third year that Guide Dogs of the Desert received this award. Roccie Hill executive director states, “We are honored to once again be the chosen charity for this award from the Palm Springs Elks.” In addition to the check presentation, there was a fundraising dinner, open to the public, to benefit Guide Dogs of the Desert. PERSONALS JUST AS I thought. There are holes here after all. Once I fugured it out it was easy. All I had to do was to reduce the number of stale ads and remvoe the useless ads for pie in the sky dreamers (toasters that fly and occupations of envelope licking) and re-arrange everything

so it made sense. It seems like an alternative universe and it is late at night - but I will not apologize.

BROTHER GANJA, Sister Moonbeam. Wherefore art thou? Are you feeling spunky? Or has the monkey on your back suddenly jumped on your chest? Have you discovered a covert way to relieve yourself without calling attention to what you are doing? Do you find yourself wandering outside at night under the full moon to enjoy nature and a quiet moment to relieve yourself either on the lawn or sand when no one is looking? Does that bring out your animal instincts? or is it only me? Please join the study group “Natural Relievers” You need not be court appointed to attend. The first Thursday of every month we meet at the church. Remember... staying together causes discontent and aggrevation but it helps to break on through to the other side like Jim Morrison sang about. SEE YA AT THE MEETING!!!!!!!

EVER WONDERED where all the materials from automotive tires really goes once it rubs off on the pavement? Think of it... billions of tires getting chewed up and sending small particulate masses into the atmosphere. What can be done to stop the polution? Where is Mr. Al Gore when needed most? BABY, BABY

Baby... This old goat is seeking some social intercourse. Now, don’t get the wrong idea. I’m a Republican and a young widow, age 67 with curley blonde hair and a killer figure. You be my boy toy and I be your GILF or, as they say in Panama “your lovely ripe papaya.” Let’s make a fruit salad together. Meet me in the produce isle of Food 4 Less on Saturday or Sunday or Wendesday for some reason. Don’t be late.

WANTED: EDIBLE Tropical fish. Why just look at ‘em? Eating fish is recommended in the Bible. So what, you say. High quality fish food makes these critters quite an attraction and generally full of protein if not poisonous. Even some vegetarians like ‘em, especially the ones that are really colorful and if they don’t look like Nemo. A culinary delight for desert .

CAMS has chosen not to be on the main strip. “We didn’t want to be like the tobacco stores in town, next door to a pet store or hobby store. These are centers where families are going to be at. We picked the furthest place from where you would traditionally find children,” Ross said. Although you will find CAMS located next door to a karate/ballet school, at the time this was the only location available and after Ross had spoken to the owners it was said to be fine. “We self-regulate advertising looking at drug manufacturing models and pharmacy models,” Ross said. This also makes it easier with so many rules and ordinances with advertising. Yet, this does not affect business since it is all word of mouth. Word of mouth has proved to be a success since CAMS is only able to currently support 600 people and they now have a collective of 320 people including city and school officials. “We do have a fund for expansion.” Ross said. “We are looking at Barstow and Victorville. There are many people who come here from that area.” “To our knowledge we are the only dispensary in San Bernardino,” Ross said.

The reason being San Bernardino County Sheriff, Gary Penrod, claimed marijuana was illegal here because it undermined federal law. New sheriff Rod Hoops reluctantly accepts medical marijuana but says that counties need to monitor patients and dispensaries better. “Tuesday the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved a 45-day moratorium to establish dispensaries,” Ross said. Also approved was a program to screen applicants and issue cards to patients so they will not be subject to arrest for possession. All transaction of marijuana is taxable. “I think the government needs to regulate marijuana like alcohol and tobacco. People will then be more apt to pay the taxes on the product. This would also help our financial and judicial systems,” Ross said. “Putting non-violent offenders in jail for a drug related cause creates criminals instead of rehabilitating them.” People are more than welcome to stop by and see what it is all about and get a tour. Monday through Friday they are open until 7:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday until 6:00 pm. The phone number is 1-800-4097969 for more information. ■

Best Quality! Best Price! Guaranteed! SS: One of my recent articles for the Desert Valley Star focused on the music of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the energetic effect it had on one’s metaphysical energy centers, or “Chakras,” if you will. So I was wondering if you remember an “Experience” or two with him? PK: Well… Jimi Hendrix was the first “black Yippie.” The “Yippies” back in the sixties were the “Youth International Party”… and he had a Yippie button on his hat, and one thing the Yippies did besides protest the Vietnam War in Chicago in 1968, was to, on Valentine’s Day of the next year, send out hundreds of rolled joints to people in many different professions- teachers, lawyers, anyone we could think of. There was even one particular person they sent one to because his name in the phone book was “Peter Pot.” And each joint was mailed with a leaflet with the truth about marijuana and the unjust laws against it. So, Jimi paid for the pot… that was his contribution to that act of the Yippie’s “Guerilla Theater.” SS: “Now it can be told…” PK: In New York, the next year, in ’69 at Woodstock another thing that stands out in my mind, with all the incredibly good music that was there, was Jimi Hendrix’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner,” because this was a gathering of the tribes from around the country and internationally, that had seen the “American Dream” morph into the “American Nightmare”. That version expressed, for me, that anguish and disappointment of what was happening in the country- culturally, politically, spiritually… and that it articulated the consciousness of the audience- which, again, I’m projecting… but it was optimism that we have an alternative value system, and we’re going to LIVE IN IT- It’s not going to be an ‘abstract thing” in this country. So the ‘soul-full-ness’ of the wailing of his guitar… symbolizing that out of this “empire that was beginning to crumble”- I mean, we can see that more and more now over the decades, crumbling under the weight of it’s own corruption, there was another “empire” building, that we called the “counter-culture.” SS: And you were on the fore-front of that counter-culture. Well, speaking of that concert, I’m reminded of the other famous ‘sunrise set’ by the Jefferson Airplane, with Grace Slick waking everyone up with “Look what’s happening out on the streets- Got to revolution!” the opening lines of the title-cut of their album “Volunteers of Amerika” (the original title before RCA records made them change it to just “Volunteers.”) That leads me to ask you a question regarding something that she talked about in her autobiography, “Somebody to Love? A Rock and Roll Memoir”. Because she was friends with Nixon’s daughters before she

moved to San Francisco, she was invited to some social function at the White House that Nixon would be participating in. But here’s the really wild part: she took as her date, your sixties Yippie Co-founder, Abbie Hoffman, and their plan was to dose the punch bowl with LSD so that hopefully Nixon would get dosed and see the “error of his ways.” So, I was just wondering what you think might have been the result if they had succeeded in their “mission.” PK: Well, that’s a hypothetical question… SS: I know- it’s a big “IF!” PK: I don’t know… Abby would have gone to jail sooner? (Laughter) SS: I was just wondering if you might be able to give an impromptu scenario of Nixon on acid - affecting the political situation of this country. PK: Oh, I thought he WAS on acid! (Laughter) SS: But it was the “Brown Acid” they warned people at Woodstock NOT to take! PK: He didn’t listen when they said that! (Laughter) I don’t know… Allen Ginsberg always thought that he could create world peace if he could get - at that point it was Kennedy and Krushev, - to both take LSD. I think because it helped serve as a vehicle to connect the sub-conscious and the conscious minds - but people projected their own experience on it and assumed that that would also happen with somebody like Nixon. But I think that acid would strengthen or extend a value system that somebody already had. So Catholics would have a “Catholic Acid Experience,” Jews would have a “Jewish Acid Experience”… whatever the symbols were. The best example is when I was at (“Acid Guru”) Tim Leary’s place in Millbrook (New York). When we were talking, the phone rang and he let me listen in- it was a stockbroker who was calling Leary to thank him for turning him on to acid, because it gave him the courage to “sell short.” By the same token I met a Socialist who, as a result of his acid trip there, gave a talk to the Socialist Scholars Conference about why Socialists should take acid. So whatever ‘vision’ someone had, acid could expand it. So I, being an Atheist… people couldn’t believe it, saying, “You mean you took acid and you didn’t find God!?” and I would say, “No, I found several more gods not to believe in…” (Laughter) Award-winning satirist Paul Krassner edited the groundbreaking countercultural magazine, The Realist (1958-2001), but when People magazine called him “Father of the Underground Press,” he immediately demanded a paternity test. He has just released a new book “In Praise Of Indecency: The Leading Investigative Satirist Sounds Off on Hypocrisy, Censorship and Free Expression” on Cleis Press and is embarking on a speaking/reading/standup tour in July. Gay Pride Music and entertainment were performed by Ted Quinn and the Gay Marines in a Ted Drake tribute, The Fairy Tales playing songs of the past, the Jim and George Jazz Duo, Lee Balan a poet, and multimedia interludes by Psychic Tsunami. LGBT clubs and organizations in attendance were the A.W.A.R.E. Club from Copper Mountain College, Desert AIDS project, Hi-Desert LGBT News, Out & About Morongo Basin, the Gay and Lesbian Archives of LA, and Equality California. There was also a silent auction inside Studio Godot as well as sales of rainbow memorabilia for those in attendance. The A.W.A.R.E. Club also raised $80.00 for their club ventures. The clubs sales were mostly from the beaded rainbow jewelry made by club members. The A.W.A.R.E. Club would like to thank all those in the community for their support.

“Captain Miller of the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department was extremely gracious and accommodating in sending officers by, with out disrupting the event. It was handled well and the visitors felt safe,” Lipsitz said. Philip Klasky and Chris Carraher were also there and helped tremendously with security. The entertainment ran until about 11:00pm with the last of the people leaving out about midnight, and several people heading to the Joshua Tree Saloon, who proudly flew rainbow flags outside the establishment. In the end the night was a huge success with 350-400 or more people at points, with possibly more throughout the evening with people coming and going during the event. Joshua Tree Gay Pride is planned to be an annual event with this being the first, we can all hope to see more to come. ■

One hazard of the job was hiding from the Dick Cheney-esque hunting parties that came blasting through the canyons, shooting at elk, deer, wild turkeys and anything else that moved. In season Murphy and his crew had to wear orange vests and take shelter in the jeep warehouse until the coast was clear. One of the horses actually took a buckshot hit. For gallery shows, he has been creating delicate bronze figures using an organic direct cast pour technique that Isamu Noguchi used in the 1950s. He has also been experimenting with attaching copper figures to mechanical chairs and motors, creating wild robotic forms that dance and buck helter skelter. Since relocating to Yucca Valley late last year, Murphy has had shows of his smaller horse sculptures at the El Dorado Polo Club in La Quinta, at Two Feathers Gallery on El Paseo in Palm

Desert, at the Equine Affaire in Pomona, in shows at the Hi-Desert Museum, Roadside Attraction Gallery in 29 Palms, and at the Best of the West Fest in Pioneertown. “I love the light and the space and the energy out here,” Murphy says. “I tried living and working on a sailboat in Marina del Rey last year, but I needed more room and I made too much noise. All I think I bother out here are the coyotes.” He has been commissioned to do artwork for artist Prince, is in the collections of Limelight Studios, Telemundo Miami, 20th Century Fox Pictures and he was recently commissioned to provide artwork for the hit movie “Marley & Me” starring Jennifer Aniston. Murphy’s work can currently be seen at galleries in Naples FL, North Salem NY, New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Palm Desert, CA and Montreal. See www. davismurphy.net ■
