FEATURED The Dr. Bob Is In On Thelonius Monster, Addiction and Celebrity Rehab Redemption BY SANDRA HALE SCHULMAN
“Once Celebrity Rehab came on VH1, people would say ‘are you that guy from the TV show?’ I’d say, ‘Yes, I am.’ Before that it was ‘Are you that guy from Thelonius Monster?’ So I’ve always been ‘that guy’ from something,” laughs Bob Forrest, or Dr. Bob as he is known in TV land. That guy Bob, musician, recovered addict, and counselor on VH-1’s unusually raw series Celebrity Rehab, has traveled a strange, dark road to bring him to a position of authority, sobriety, and celebrity he is still amazed to have. With his long chestnut hair, trademark heavy black glasses, assorted headgear and funky footwear, the 50-something Yucca Mesa resident doesn’t look like your average straight, know-all, cure-all drug counselor - he leaves that look to his partner Dr. Drew Pinsky - but he is currently the Chemical Dependency Program Director at Las Encinas Hospital. His easy laugh and musician sideline makes him a hipper, more relatable “authority” figure. “Addicts always swear they’re going to stop,” Forrest says while quaffing iced coffee at the Water Canyon Coffee House, ”but I’ve been there and I say well, that’s not all up to you, you have to follow directions of some other people, and unfortunately those other people now are me. The doctor/lawyer/judge whoever
tells them, ‘okay you have to complete therapy with Dr. Bob,’ so they wait nervously all day and night and then I walk in. Not what they were expecting I’m sure, I love to see the look on their faces when they realize I’m the guy they have to listen to who will save their life.” Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew premiered in January 2008. Now filming its third season, those currently in need of dire help include Heidi Fleiss – a.k.a. the Hollywood Madam; Mackenzie Phillips from One Day At A Time; Dennis Rodman, former NBA star player; and hard luck country singer Mindy McCready, as they undergo treatment for various drug and alcohol addictions. The scenes can get harrowing and rough, as deep-seated issues and the sometimes violent, painful consequences of addiction come to a head. They are treated by Dr. Drew and Dr. Bob; the show is filmed at the Pasadena Recovery Center. A new spinoff titled Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew has been put into production. “I was not totally in favor of having celebrities as the focus,” Forrest says “but it was the main way we could get funding for the show, and I think it’s put a recognizable human face on the problem. I started by volunteering at centers in Malibu, which are very high end, PAGE 22

“Camp Betty” Ford Mom’s Clinic A Pop Culture Habit BY SANDRA HALE SCHULMAN
In an episode of Absolutely Fabulous, Patsy Stone says that the last mosquito that bit her had to book into the Betty Ford Clinic. In an episode of the The Simpsons, “The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson”, Marge, Lisa, Bart, and Maggie go to see a musical based on The Betty Ford Center. Bart comments, “When I grow up, I want to be in the Betty Ford Center.” Marge replies, “Better start saving now, it’s very expensive.” Ha ha. Maybe. While addiction is never funny, The Betty Ford Center, the long-standing Rancho Mirage clinic to the rich and zonked, has become, for better or worse, a pop culture staple. Co-founded by former U.S. First Lady Betty Ford and Leonard Firestone in 1982, Mrs. Ford’s name has become synonymous PAGE 5
Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough An Exclusive Excerpt from Runway RunAway BY LORELEI SHELLIST
Lorelei Shellist’s new book, Runway RunAway: A Backstage Pass to Fashion, Romance & Rock ‘n Roll, is a true story of a runaway teenager who follows her dreams to travel the world as a top model. On the way she falls in love with rock guitarist Steve Clark from Def Leppard. The love story turns from a dream come true to tragedy when she loses him to his addictions. In this exclusive excerpt, Lorelei joins Steve at a treatment center as he attempts his first rehab. Chapter 21Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough “I could never change you. I don’t wanna blame you. Baby you don’t have to take the fall. Yes I may have hurt you, but I did not desert you, maybe I just wanna have it all.” Patty Smyth & Don Henley
Two weeks passed before I heard from Steve, who called to apologize. He said he was determined to give up alcohol and promised never to hurt me again. He pleaded with me to come to family week in mid-October, and I found I couldn’t deny his request. After six years together we had made it this far. This is what I’d prayed for; I had to take the next step. No other band or family members were involved. Steve didn’t want to tell his parents. On Sunday October 15, 1989, I flew to Tucson, Arizona. An airport taxi drove me to the Sheraton Conquistador Hotel, and after checking into my room I called Steve to let him know I had arrived. His voice was soft, and he whispered that he couldn’t wait to see me because he missed me terribly. At 5:30 p.m. a minivan arrived at the hotel to pick up all the family members and drive us to the orientation
meeting at Sierra Tucson. We piled into the van knowing we were each there out of concern for a loved one who was suffering from the horrible disease of alcoholism. As the van pulled into the gates, revealing a sand-washed Spanish adobe residential facility, the driver directed us to the main auditorium. Once inside, I took in my surroundings. A table of books displaying The Big Book of AA, The Courage to Change, 12 Steps and 12 Traditions, One Day at a Time and others was placed at the back of the big room. The familiar white poster with the twelve steps written on it sat on the stage, next to another poster listing the twelve traditions in AA. I was eager to learn everything I could about how to combat this disease, yet my fears kept me in the back of the auditorium. I sat, hoping I would not be called upon to speak. PAGE 23

Artists Hit the Highlands Unique Program Brings International Talent BY SANDRA HALE SCHULMAN
Near And Far Joshua Tree by Eric Merrill
Joshua Tree, CA - The Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency hosted an informal gathering at the home of the sponsors last Saturday for the community to meet this years chosen artists. The program offers artists a house in which to live and work for July and August to create a body of work. The program culminates with a group show in September. Frederick Fulmer and James Berg, the generous owners of the homes, which are rented out as private desert vacation getaways the rest of the year, solely fund the residency program. Each of the Highland homes has five acres and are located right up against Joshua Tree National Park.
“We love art and want to share this spectacular area with creative young artists from all over the world,” says Berg. The park is one of the most beautiful environments in the country and the unique beauty and quiet is an ideal place to create. The residency is open to artists worldwide working in all media. Three of the six 2009 artists were introduced at the event; two painters and a writer. A landscape painter from Rosemead, California, Eric Merrell teaches at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art in Van Nuys. He has traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe, painting and exhibiting in various cities. An amazingly fast painter, Merrell aims to capture the ever- changing light, often creating as many as five paintings a day. Renata De Bonis from Sao Paulo, Brazil creates sweetly muted palette paintings, usually of landscapes and places that “I connect with and resonate with me,” she says. De Bonis has already completed some lovely, stark works of rock formations reminiscent of Georgia O’Keefe. Maria De Los Angeles Esteves–Maria or “Cuca” as she is called, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and now lives in Altadena, California. She graduated from the Conservatorio de Musica de San Martin, Buenos Aires with a degree in Music Education. Later she went to Paris to study electro-acoustic music, orchestration, composition and film composition. She read a harrowing short story about a desperate act of survival that turns deadly. The other participating artists are Marcia Freedman, Painter, Edward Bok Lee, Writer and Fernando Sanchez who creates Video/Conceptual works. ■

As of this issue, we have moved our production office into the wonderful, charming Old Town Yucca Valley Water Canyon building right on Highway 62. (Our Palm Springs office is still open.) Excited? You bet we are! Not only is this an important historic property – dating back to the 1920s – it is rapidly becoming the heart of Yucca Valley with the Water Canyon Coffee Company, the new Farmers Market, live music, and
soon, a new pizza/wine café out back surrounded by some incredible custom metal artwork. New Age stores, antique shops, and some great restaurants are also our neighbors in one of the only pedestrian friendly places in town. We’ll be exhibiting local artists in our aptly named Front Window Gallery, and we’ll be open during the Farmers Market every Wednesday. Stop by and say hello. You may have noticed some big changes in our last few issues.
We like themes, in fact we’re jonesing for them, and this week’s Addiction Issue tackles some difficult subjects in a myriad of ways. We’re focusing on local problems and giving some helpful solutions, alternatives, and information. It’s not all drugs, drinking and gambling, we also spotlight addictive foods and the best of strung out cinema. Thanks for reading. And God bless Betty Ford. ■

“Camp Betty” with the standard in rehab. Her decision to undertake the project followed on the heels of her own battle with alcohol and pill dependence, and after her release from the not so cushy U.S. Naval Hospital, she pursued the goal of creating a treatment center that emphasized the needs of women and families. The center, affectionately called “Camp Betty”, offers inpatient detox and treatment, typically 30 days, as well as outpatient programs. But in America you know you’re successful when you become a pop culture punchline. On an episode of the TV show ALF, ALF is addicted to eating cotton, causing psychedelic experiences. Kate comments, “We can
PAGE 3 take ALF to the Betty Ford Center and see if they have a cotton program.” A foreword to one of the books of Calvin and Hobbes comments how as people grow older, they can find it hard to recapture the serendipity of youth, going on to say “...a desperate few do the things that later land them in the Betty Ford Center. The rest of us, more sensibly, read Calvin and Hobbes.” In a 1984 Bloom County strip, Bill the Cat is sent to the Ford Center to be deprogrammed after his rescue from a Rajneeshee cult. In a comedic sketch done by Mad TV’s Nicole Sullivan, The Vancome Lady character works at the Betty Ford Center as a sarcastic and condescending receptionist poking fun at celebrities and their families who are either
residing at the center or are trying to check in. Celebrity guest star clients include Billy Joel. The character Murphy Brown, played by Candice Bergen, from the sitcom of the same name spent a month in the Betty Ford Center prior to the pilot episode for abuse of alcohol and cigarettes. In the X-Files episode ‘Anasazi,’ Fox Mulder declares he is at the Betty Ford Center when contacted by the Cancer Man, when in fact he is in Mexico. In an episode of Two and a Half Men, Alan says of his ex-motherin-law, “Remember when she rode out of Betty Ford on a lawnmower?” Maybe laughter is the best postrehab medicine. ■

TOM’S BIZ TIPS Nothing is More Powerful Than an Idea Whose Time Has Come BY TOM GREEN
The dictionary says an idea is “A mental picture of something desired, purposed, or planned.” In the 1500’s when the famous Galileo was but a lad of fifteen, as the story goes, while attending church services one Sunday his mind drifted from the lectures. His gaze fell on a decorative lamp swinging back and forth with such regularity, he likened it to the beating pulse and with that simple inspiration he went on to his first invention, a rudimentary device to measure a patient’s pulse. In the 1800’s there was talk of shutting down the US Patent office under the belief that everything had already been thought of and invented. Everyday each of us get ideas about our business or for another business that come into our mind and disappears just as fast. Months or years later, someone else develops it into a successful business and we lament on how we thought of that first. Obviously there is not enough time in our current life span to do anything with but a small portion of these inspirations. Still, every business person and organization should have a method of capturing, storing, sorting, recalling, evaluating, implementing or journaling their ideas into ‘Someday I’ll’s...’” Some companies use suggestion boxes, employee and customer questionnaires and other stimulants to acquire creative ideas. The growth of many a large corporation has been brought about by a simple, so called “little idea” into something huge (Post-its for one). So too, the ideas developed in one industry branch out into others. For example, the now- on the-ropes auto industry from the mind of Henry Ford pioneered many advances in production methods, marketing and labor relations. My favorite Henry Ford quote is “If you think you can or you think you can’t, you‘re right.”
We are so fortunate today, because there are 100’s of computer programs to track our sales results, and design all kinds of graphs and reports when merchants less than 200
“If you think you can or you think you can’t, you‘re right.” years ago did all this by hand. In the mid 1800’s, in Dayton, Ohio, a man named John Patterson took an idea and it became National Cash Register. This idea also leapfrogged business productivity and growth. Nobody doubts the power of a great idea but how do you handle them all? In a busy work day if you stopped every time you got a brain fart you would be constantly following different rabbit holes and get nothing
else done. I carry a little notebook with me to capture ideas. I have seen others use a tape recorder or their cell phones and I used to use a designated voice mail number to call them in. I just read an article in Fortune Small Business on my favorite time management guru, David Allen, “Getting Things Done”, 2002, highly recommended. The article is entitled “A Guru Goes Digital”. David doesn’t recommend software programs because they require you to think too much and the thrust of his system is to capture of the idea or task and immediately file it for working when in that mode. The Fortune article’s author, however, goes on to recommend several programs, “Omni Focus” and “Things” that the hardcore among you may want to try. Whatever method you use, I urge you to get better at handling your ideas and you may just be the next DaVinci. To your business success. ■ tom@americanfreejournal.com

LIVING LONGER Using Hypnotism To Create Good Habits And Completely End Harmful Addictions BY ART KUNKIN ART KUNKIN
Hypnotism is the natural state of being relaxed and suggestible that every person experiences many times during each day. For example, the first few moments of both waking up and going to sleep are hypnotic in nature. They can be utilized by a knowledgeable person to change their lives for the better. In fact, the entire period of childhood is a state of hypnotic suggestibility. That suggestibility allows a child to quickly adopt the behaviors for coping with the problems of life. As we shall see, the ability of a child to rapidly form his or her belief system can also cause difficulties in later life. The ability to concentrate and focus on a task until it gets done is absolutely necessary to achieve success in any area of life. All too often, a person has not developed that ability to concentrate during childhood. However, as an adult, he/she can learn how to develop this ability in a few hours or at most a weekend or two by learning how to relax. Relaxation is the key to entering the state of suggestibility that is called hypnotism. Becoming like a suggestible child again during a hypnotic session while in adulthood can turn a person lacking self-confidence into a confident human being in a very short time. Other success-inhibiting behavior that
can be overcome by hypnotically integrating new suggestions into one’s life include the inability to set useful goals, a belief that it is wrong to become wealthy, or a crippling fear or psychological phobia. And last, but not least, learning how to change one’s negative attitude toward members of the opposite sex can lead to the family and social relationships so necessary to feeling successful in life, Even when a person has bad habits such as smoking or drug use that involve physiological as well as psychological addictions, the “will power” necessary to combat the cravings of the body can be strengthened by hypnotic suggestions. In my opinion, one of the most important reasons to learn how to consciously use the state of hypnotism is to avoid being hypnotized by others without your knowledge. There are many advertisers and politicians and cultists of various kinds in our society who consciously use hypnotic techniques to secretly influ-
ence us to buy things and/or support them. Obviously, it is in our interests not to be so influenced. Books on hypnotism correctly state that all hypnotic suggestion is really self-hypnotism. It is my experience that when a hypnotist helps another person to relax and enter the suggestible state, the hypnotist is simply adding a bit of psychic strength to the natural abilities of the person to improve themselves. In my opinion, the most effective way to learn self-hypnotism, either by oneself or with the help of an experienced hypnotist, is in a minimum of two intensive weekends. Patiently devoting a few hours to learning self-hypnotism may be one of the best investments an adult can make in their entire life. My recommendation is that an adult learn the procedure by following the simple instructions given in the many books available. One very good book, “Self Hypnotism in 48 Hours” by Frieda Morris can be found in used bookstores or online on Amazon for as little as six dollars. But if you do want to learn from a professional hypnotist, I
... all hypnotic suggestion is really
self-hypnotism.
would suggest that you select one whose values accord with yours and whom you consider to be a compassionate, non-dogmatic, and generous mature adult. Since the world is full of unscrupulous hypnotizers using suggestions to unconsciously influence people, I personally believe that children should be taught the subject in elementary classes of the public school system. If children could learn to identify and resist hypnotic procedures directed against them, I believe they would be able to help create a much better world. I would be interested in hearing from readers their responses to the ideas in this article. In next week’s column I would like to discuss these responses and teach a method by which one could easily learn self-hypnotism. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries leadership qualities can help bring order out of all that confusion, whether it’s on the job or in the home. But be careful to guide, not goad, others into following you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Applying a more personal view to a job-linked issue could help provide better insight into those persistent problems. Use your keen Taurean logic to cut through the double-talk. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking some time off could be the best way to get through that seemingly endless round of demands. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle things from a new perspective. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Restoring a sagging professional relationship takes a lot of effort. By all means, state your position. But also make sure you pay close attention to the other person’s point of view. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A hot prospect intrigues the Big Cat, who is always on the prowl for a promising investment. But be careful that this “promise” has a chance of being kept. Check it out more carefully. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend could use some of your compassion and concern. If he or she doesn’t ask for help, be sure you step up and make the first move. Also, check out a new career possibility. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might have difficulty getting your opinions heard because of all the noise being made

But before you commit your time and effort, check to see if that person’s situation is all that he or she has led you to believe it is. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You should soon be seeing positive results from your recent efforts on behalf of a family member. On another matter, check that you have all the facts regarding a job assignment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects favor closer family relationships this week. Take time for visits, whether in person, by phone, by mail or in cyberspace. Let them know how important they are to you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A missed opportunity isn’t always a negative. Maybe your instincts are telling you not to rush into something you “thought” was worthwhile. Make time for family this weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sense of humor helps you get through a tricky situation. But some stick-in-the-muds might not be so willing to make the changes that you and others agree are necessary. It’s hot out there and songbirds need fresh water. Don’t be shy about birdbaths, and put out as many as you can. I have four in my brid garden. One of them is a pedestal style and sits under a small tree. The woodpeckers love this bath and use it often.

IN THE DOG HOUSE A weekly chat about your best friend who loves you unconditionally, your dog!
Plenty of Water
JULY 16, 2009
Training your dog is about communication, loving communication and understanding on your dogs level. Training is about motivating your dog to learn. The fact is your dog desires to please you, it makes them happy and feel accepted, in turn we are happy with our well-behaved friend. Dogs are pack animals so when they take residence in our home we become their pack. They look for the “alpha” pack leader, if none is found the dog will attempt to take the lead. Have you ever entered into a persons home where the dog is leader of the pack? It is easy to spot, the dog is all over you displaying any number of undesirable
behaviors, barking, charging, jumping, rudely sniffing. Obedience training establishes the human as the leader of the pack. When your dog identifies you as leader then he or she can relax because the leader has to make all the major decisions for the well being of the pack. Because I have established myself as alpha of the pack, I have certain rules that must be followed. Like saying “please” which in dog language is “sit”. They must say “please” for all privileges, whether it be for a treat, a meal, putting on the leash to go for a walk, (not a dragging session down the street). “Wait” to enter or exit through a doorway, (not
a charge, knock you down free for all!). “Sit” “Down” “Stay” “Heel” “Come” must be obeyed under all circumstances. Theses are my rules as leader and provider of my pack. The rules are always enforced with love, praise, affection and correction without ever holding a grudge. If an infraction is committed it is quickly corrected and just as quickly forgotten. A word about punishment. Punishment is different than correction. Punishment may include yelling, hitting, slapping, using a newspaper or your hands or feet. This type of punishment will only confuse and damage your relationship with your dog. Correction is used only after your dog understands a behavior command and
chooses not to obey. The correction is the word “no” or a shake of a “shake can” (soda can with 15 pennys and taped over the top), or a spritz of water with a spray bottle using the word “NO” in a disapproving deep voice. Be sure and write in with questions, comments or fun stories. loriherbel@ aol.com ■

Dear Lorelei, A friend of mine recently married a very nice man who I think is an alcoholic. Having been involved with my share of alcoholics and addicts in the past, I can see the writing on the wall. When her husband begins drinking she tries to usher him out of situations before he gets belligerent and embarrassingly drunk. She even apologizes for him on the way out the door as if his drinking were a reflection on her. I am concerned for her welfare, what can I do to help her? Signed, Carie Dear Carie, I hear you, Carie, and I understand your concern for your friend, as we who have walked that path know how futile it is to try to “care-take” or control another person. If you have been down that road in your own life, then you know how long it took you to learn how this insidious disease masquerades itself by getting away with whatever it can from whomever it can - until everyone concerned is on the merry-go-round of either “lack of responsibility” or “over-responsibility.” In other words, your wanting to take care of your friend is the same as her wanting to take care of her alcoholic husband. So you see, this is pushing all of your co-dependent buttons. Remember, when we are focusing on other people’s issues, it means we are not focusing on our own. How do you help? My advice to you is to be a power of example by stepping up your own co-dependent recovery program and loving yourself. Are you going to 12-step meetings yourself? Are you in Co-DA or Al-Anon? If so, then when the time comes that
she needs you the most, you will be ready to lend her a compassionate ear, without judgment, and she’ll want some of that inner peace and wisdom you have acquired within your-self by taking care of yourself. Then, if or when she asks for help, you may gently invite her along to a meeting, or share some of your own experiences, or even your books with her. In my own experience it took me ages to really understand my part in my alcoholic’s disease. You see, we all need each other to fuel our bad habits. This way, we have someone to blame them on! What happens next is we discover that all we are doing is creating havoc in our own lives in order to stay disconnected from ourselves. All these distractions actually keep us from ourselves. The dramas, the fixing, the loving too much. Keep the focus on your self and allow your friend the dignity of her own process too. Stay on purpose, Carie, be a good example, and keep making those loving choices. Love, Your Life Coach, Lorelei Lorelei Shellist is Life Coach, Counselor, Columnist, Author and Speaker. Theatre 29 Readies Over-the-Top
“THE PRODUCERS” The very hard working volunteers at Theatre 29 are finishing the final touches for the July 17 opening of Mel Brooks’ ”THE PRODUCERS”. Putting on such a huge show on our relatively small stage has been a challenge for a very dedicated cast and crew”, said artistic Director Gary Daigneault”. Daigneault said, “Expect some surprises because you never know what, or who, may pop out of a set piece, even semi-animated pigeons!”. Technical Director Tom Highfill and chief builder Butch Pelfrey worked literally hundreds of hours, sometimes in 100+ heat, to get the multi-faceted production ready for the five week run. They were ably assisted by Mike Zuhlke, Francis Wright, Daigneault and his special painting assistant Quentin Roberts. The Hi-Desert Medical Center Foundation will host opening night of Theatre 29's "The Producers," July 17 at 6 p.m.
Heading the team that is literally choreographing the hit Broadway Musical’s myriad set changes is veteran Stage Manager Mary Phelps with her able crew members Mike Lipsitz, Ed Manson, and Patrick Whalen. “THE PRODUCERS”, tells the hilarious story, as only Mel Brooks can, of two Broadway producers who set out to produce a Broadway flop so they can abscond with the money they raised to put on the s h o w. T h e p l a y “Springtime for Hitler” instead is a surprise hit, providing even more comic fodder.
“THE PRODUCERS” opens July 17 and runs Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00pm though August 15. A Thursday show is set for July 30, and a matinee on Sunday, August 9. Theatre 29 is located at 73637 Sullivan Road (right around the corner from Barr Lumber) in the City of Twentynine Palms. Tickets are $12.00 for regular admission, $10.00 for seniors and military, and $8.00 for students with ID. The show is not recommended for children because of adult themes. (Tickets for opening night only are available from the Hi-Desert Medical Center Foundation as pat of a special fund-raiser.) Tickets are available by calling the Theatre 29 Box Office at 760-361-4151 or online at www. theatre29.com ■

What kind of assignment is it to be sent out to write about addictions we actually enjoy once in a while? Well, of course such an assignment is simply addictive. We start off with a redux from a previous article, Devane’s Lasagna. Just look at that photo. It almost makes you reach into the page for a taste again and if I could I would. Too much of this fine food can pack on pounds so be careful not to eat it more than two, three, four times a week, maybe. Next comes the almighty burger. In the Coachella and Yucca Valleys there are quite a few places that have perfected their own presentation of a burger. I have to give a vote to In-N-Out Burger in Thousand Palms as their food freshness is renowned. Be sure to ask for Animal Fires not on the menu. But this day I had no time to get to In-NOut and I was hungry and walking past Tyler’s in Palm Springs. Voila! Right under my nose. Tyler’s burgers have been an iconic staple in Palm Springs for many years. For this, I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and the delightful server Tami suggested I try the Home Made Potato

Music Festival Moves Ahead.
Barrett’s Music Promoters On Inside Track BY DEAN GRAY
Des Desert Hot Springs, CA – Planning for a music festival in Desert Hot Springs is moving forward in what Spring appears to be a leap of faith by the appear developers, that the $175,000 they say develop they ha have into the project will be reimbursed by the city and that they will be the only bidders. The music festival idea is being spearheaded by Councilman Scott Matas working with the chair of the Community and Cultural Affairs Commission and former council member, Dot Reed. It is seen as a way to bring Desert Hot Springs into the Coachella Valley entertainment scene. City Manager Rick Daniels said the promoters, despite what they claimto have spent, have not yet presented a scope of work to the city and that the city is under no financial obligation for the $175,000. Daniels is also in discussions with at least two other promoters. Reed has a different interpretation of the arrangements, she explained in an interview on Sunday as she was working at the city’s visitor center. Reed said the promoters “spent a lot of time and money putting this together.” She said it is only fair we give them the project.” We continue with that interview. GRAY: What can you tell me about the Music Festival? Did the city spend $175,000 already? Reed: The committee spent it, not the city. GRAY: Will the committee be reimbursed? REED: They expect to be paid back. GRAY: Is there a contract? Reed: No, of course not. You know there is no contract. GRAY: Is this the Cultural Affairs Committee? REED: No. It’s Bruce Barrett. GRAY: So it’s Bruce’s Committee? Reed: That’s right. GRAY: Who’s on this committee? REED: Friends of Bruce. He knows the promoters. GRAY: Was there an RFP [request for proposal] for the contract? REED: No, we don’t have to do that. These people spent a lot of time and money putting this together. It’s only fair we give them the project. GRAY: So, the only promoters that knew about this are Bruce’s friends. Was anyone else notified? REED: No. We don’t have to do that. If anyone else was interested we would have known about it. No one else is interested, only these people from Hollywood. Nobody else cares about this, they didn’t show up at the meetings. GRAY: So, there was no public notification? No announcements of any kind? REED: No. Why are you asking about this? GRAY: Well, I was told that the city had a process of announcing contracts with an RFP in order to be fair to awarding contracts, that they stopped just handing out
contracts to certain people’s friends. Pete Hernandez, Bob Zinner, Alan Diaz and Bob Gross play the Blues at Alternate Route aka Blue Guitar.
Blue Guitar is Back, Sorta Venue may be for sale BY ED MUNSON, EDITOR AT LARGE
Looking through another magazine I spied Bob Zinner’s ad for his Blues Revue to be playing at the old Blue Guitar in Palm Springs. The place is now confusingly called Alternate Route because of some problem about using the Blue Guitar name. Kal David built and operated Blue Guitar for almost ten years, then sold it to Marsha Tekeste of L.A. She struggled mightily but could not make it work. She had no money for marketing and advertising. She sold it to Hugh and Stacey Carson, about 18 months ago. They had savings from a previous business and poured that money and their hearts into remodeling the club. It lost its Blues club flavor but became a venue distinctly more classy than previous. The bar
was upgraded and made inviting, new furniture sat upon a new wood floor and the stage was rebuilt. Lots of work on the facility, but when I asked about advertising and PR, Stacy Carson exclaimed that they had no money for advertising and PR. Oh my, once again, how naïve. How do you pour a few hundred thousand dollars into a business to upgrade it and nobody thought about promoting the place? This happens all too frequently. Wellintentioned people with money buy/build a business but completely forget about promotion. This is one reason it is highly recommended to get guidance from a mentor or the Small Business Administration. Right now, we see vestiges of the most
Gambling a Problem? BY BARBARA RENTON
Yucca Valley, CA – There are at least six casinos within an hour’s drive of the Palm Springs area, geared toward fine dining, spas, live shows, upscale accommodations and, of course, gambling. While the majority of people can go for a few hours or a weekend and try their luck at the slots or tables, for others it can turn into a problem they never knew they could have. Casinos make it easy with players club cards, free food and nd liquor for the highrollers, air recirculation systems that pump out smoke and toxins and pump in fresh air. There are no clocks anywhere on the walls so gamblers lose their sense of time, and no windows on the main floor. There are discreet signs posted for 1800-GAMBLER in case a customer comes up for even fresher air and realizes s/he might have a gambling problem. In 1986, the nonprofit California Council on Problem Gambling was founded. It is their goal to provide awareness, prevention, research, and treat-
ment for any gambler with a problem that is uncontrollable. According to their website (www.calproblemgambling.org), if people lose time from school or work, if they borrow or even steal money in order to gamble, lie about their gambling activities and can’t stop even when it causes damage, they have a problem. There are several facilities available to aid gamblers resume a normal life again. The same anonymous groups used for alcohol, eating disorders, and narcotics are also used for gamblers since they treat all addictions. • Gamblers Anonymous - holds meetings in Palm Springs. Seewww.gamblersanonymous.org or call (760) 325-2808 • Michael’s House - located in Palm Springs, offers a program where the individual goes through a period of “detox” where they do not gamble at all, followed by comprehensive counseling to assess the root causes of the behavior and develop better decision-making and healthy alternatives to gambling. ■
recent business to occupy the facility: mirrors behind the stage, three love beds in front of the stage, couches under the windows and some of the regular tables and chairs scattered about. The stage has a railing for heaven sake. There is no stage lighting to speak of. Observing the place I used to call my second home, I can see it is ready to be sold again. Most recently it was some sort of gay bar. Now return the Carsons who rename it Alternate Route (alternaterouteps.com) which, to this keen mind, is confusing, as it could still be a gay bar. Maybe that is intentional. I put a call in to the Carsons for comment but did not receive a reply by deadline time. The iconic Blue Guitar sign has been removed from its position hanging over the sidewalk and now lies forlorn in the office,

partly dissembled, waiting for rebirth. This club facility can be made into a money making music club with the proper funding and management. If an investor is found, let’s hope they understand the need to finance continuous presence advertising and PR to make the thing work. We need this to be a music club for the Blues as well as Jazz and Pop concerts. There is no club like it. The know-how is available to make it work. All that is needed now is an investor with a heart for providing music to the valley and common sense enough to fund promotion and hire management that knows what they are doing. Stubbornly naïve does not work, as has been proven. In the meantime, catch Bob Zinner’s Blues Revue Sunday evenings. Stop in and have a look around, see the potential. Enjoy the music. ■

Desert Hot Springs, CA – A plan is developing to turn a former Jewish Temple on Pierson Blvd. into a medical center serving low income residents and those without the means to purchase private insurance. It was originally hoped the temple building would serve as a community theater and public meeting rooms but those plans hit a snag when a structural engineering report deemed the building unsafe for occupancy.
populations was planned for a 14 acre site on Palm Drive near Video Depot. The county purchased the land three years ago for $7 million, promising public meeting rooms, an amphitheater and a public auditorium (as the city has none.) The County Public Health Department then hosted a big party celebrating the event, featuring speeches by local officials and a bus load of health department personnel from Riverside. That catered af-
The building falls within a specific plan area for what is referred to as the Vortex, a redevelopment area in the center of the city to bring in movie theaters, restaurants, and night life. This medical clinic, not shown as part of the downtown specific plan, would be a new and different component for the downtown experience city leaders are looking to create. fair featured a threepiece string quartet, literally adding to the fanfare. It is not clear if a medical clinic in the downtown area will replace the promised county facility should a medical clinic downtown be built. A consultant with 15 years experience in government health services contracting in San Bernardino County, Javier Gutierrez, has his doubts. “Why would the county spend ten cents building a health clinic once the city fills the need itself,” said Gutierrez. “What drives county health service projects is need, not the interests of a city to justify the purchase of a building.” The Jewish Temple building was purchased by the city for $1.4 million. A structural inspection conducted after the purchase revealed the building was not safe and will require between $1 million and $1.5 million to salvage. ■

Another look at great movies for the home theater.
Strung-Out On Addiction Flicks BY ROBIN E. SIMMONS
“Never Get Outta The Boat” is a stark, inyour-face look at a group of men in a Los Angeles recovery house. The Herculean effort to get out of the deadly cycle of addiction has never been better portrayed as these men confront the deaths of their fellow addicts. An award winning and disturbing film.
Jonas Kerlund’s “Spun” (2002) is about a college drop-out who gets a job as a dope dealer’s driver. His payment: free crystal meth. His life becomes a bizarre freak zone of tweakers as he slips into the amoral morass of a drug underworld. Look for Mickey Rourke, Mena Suvari, Jason Schwartzman and John Leguizamo. Ted Demme’s “Blow” stars Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz. Depp is George Jung and the movie chronicles his 30-year rise as an emperor of the marijuana trade and partnership with the Medellin Cartel. Then comes the downfall -- police busts, conviction and a very long sentence. A terrific cautionary tale and a great ride. 2000 was a great year for addiction flicks. “28 Days” with Sandra Bullock as a reporter who enters drug rehab after stealing a limo and crashing it. Darren Aronofsky’s harrowing “Requiem For A Dream” does not flinch in depicting the out-of-control addictions of four determined people. Steve Soderbergh’s “Traffic” is a terrific complex drama about a conservative judge the President has picked to champion and lead America’s war against drugs, only to discover that his teenage daughter is an addict. And who can forget “GIA” (1998) the truelife story about top-model Gia Maria Carangi that made us notice Angelina Jolie. The sad story follows her from a teen waitress in her dad’s diner to her death at 26 from AIDS. In between is a series of failed relationships and drug abuse. The ever more complicated paperwork required to enroll in a government detox program is frustratingly dramatized in “Gridlock’D” (1999) starring Tupac. The red tape is like a ticking clock as the two main characters, Stretch and Spoon, are shuffled from one agency office
to another while being chased by both dealers and cops. 1995 had Spike Lee’s “Clockers” and “Drunks” starring Richard Lewis. But the standout for that year was “Leaving Las Vegas.” Nic Cage is a screenwriter who has sold his soul to alcohol. He’s lost everything and now is ready to relinquish his body on one last binge. He forms a non-interference truce with prostitute Elizabeth Shue (who won an Oscar©). Oliver Stone’s amped portrayal of 60’s rock group “The Doors” (1991) is also a film bio of leader Jim Morrison. It follows him from his film school days in L.A. to his death in Paris in 1971 at the age of 27. The 80s had a couple of powerful addiction flicks. “Drugstore Cowboy” showcased druggie Matt Dillon and his “family” and their inexorable slide into a life of crime. John Belushi’s demise – he died on March 5, 1982 – is graphically retold in Larry Peerce’s seering “Wired” In the same year, Michael Keeton’s Daryl Poynter confronts his cocaine and alcohol proble in “Clean And Sober.” In “The Boost” James Woods’ fortunes takes a reversal and he resorts to cocaine for that “boost.” But he declines into full blown addiction and finally insanity. “Barfly” is a besotted love story. Literally. Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway are terrific as the boozed up lovers, based loosely on the life of L.A. poet and professional drunk Charles Bukowski. The biggest dope movie of the decade is the iconic “Scarface.” Al Pacino is explosive as the egomaniacal and paranoid Miami mobster Tony Montana. Don’t miss his nose dive into a mound of coke. The 70s were rife with top-notch addiction dramas. The five that hold up the best are “The Rose” with Bette Midler doing her amazing and thinly disguised turn as a Janis Joplin-like singer. A full-blown tragedy in the grandest theatrical terms recounts how fame, drugs, sex and rock’n roll brought her down, down down. “Lenny” is Lenny Bruce and Dustin Hoffman inhabits the man in a semi documentary style retelling of this sad and fearless socially alert comic. “Panic In Needle Park” is a sad, stark and revealing look at a bunch of addicts who hang out in a park in New York City. Pacino reprises another facet of his addict persona. Diana Ross is memorable as the great Billie Holiday in “Lady Sings The Blues.” Holiday’s tragic life from prostitute to acclaim to drug addiction is unforgettable. My favorite 1970’s dope movie is “The Seven Percent Solution.” The title is a reference to the cocaine solution that Sherlock Holmes (per
author A. C. Doyle) used to soothe his mind and give him insight. This so concerns his partner Dr. Watson, that he tricks Holmes into traveling to Vienna to seek help from none other than Sigmund Freud. While Frued delves into the mysteries of Holme’s mind, Holmes attempts to solve a kidnapping. Other films worth finding are “Performance” with Mick Jagger as a rock star who hides a strung-out, psycho gangster lying low after a mob hit. “Valley of the Dolls” (its title that is slang for “doped to the gills.”) It’s a campy wallow in boobs, booze and barbiturates. And we haven’t even touched on sex addiction as a character flaw. Remember the original “Alfie” and Michael Caine’s serial seductions? And his obliviously glib narration of his own narcissism and misogyny? The last addiction film that’s worthy of mention here was way ahead of its time. The little seen “Brainstorm” was Natalie Wood’s final film. It’s a look at the power of electronic “alternate reality” input systems and its incredibly addictive nature. Way before video and computer games became a reality, this prescient film defined a phenom. And yes, people have died while immersed in video on-line gaming foregoing food, water and sleep. Comments? NEVNITNITREO
ANSWER: Intervention
I am in the middle of a 21 day cleansing diet. No meat, no caffeine, no alcohol, no sugar, no gluten, etc. In short, no addictive substances. And part of the diet is daily meditation. So at the moment, I am feeling very clear-headed and, well, pure. I am enlightened with insights. And one of them is that there’s a whole genre of movies not usually defined as its own category - movies about addiction – gambling, alcohol, cocaine, heroin, speed, sex and even electronic media itself. For most of us, the first titles that come to mind are the classics “The Lost Weekend” in which Ray Milland goes on a four day binge and “The Man With The Golden Arm” – the once controversial Otto Preminger film where Frank Sintra mainlines heroin. And of course in 1962’s “Days of Wine and Roses,” we watch Jack Lemmon’s character share his passion with bride Lee Remick as he seduces her into a life of alcoholism. For me, the best on-screen depiction of alcoholism is Billy Bob Thornton’s “Bad Santa”, a very dark and utterly realistic black comedy about the real meaning of Christmas and the mystery of grace and redemption from the most unlikely source. After a little reflection, many more titles jumped to my attention. So if you’re fighting some chemical or compulsion, what better way than to have your own Withdrawal Festival. Listed here are an eclectic selection of films about out-of-control addictions and self destructive behaviors. The biggest problem with addiction is maintaining denial while every cell screams for self-medication in a futile chase to duplicate that first delicious high. And that makes great drama! In this year’s “Pineapple Express,” Seth Gordon and James Franco played-out absurd stoner desperation and the violent complications of running from corrupt cops and dope dealers. And of being dopes. Stupid, scary and sometimes funny. “Ray” (2004) did not dwell on but acknowledged the remarkable recovery of musician Ray Charles (Jamie Foxx) in his battle with addiction and prejudice. It’s a powerful film about the legal highs of creativity itself. A grisly real life murder on Wonderland Avenue in 1981 is the inspiration (if you can call it that) of James Cox’s “Wonderland.” The seedy world of drugs, porn and violence is vividly exposed in the investigation of this notorious Laurel Canyon quadruple homicide.

Addiction is defined as the continuous use of a behavior with adverse consequences. It hijacks the brain, the addict can seem reasonable and like the person you knew, but it’s the invasion of the body snatchers.” Forrest believes people are pre-wired genetically to become addicts. If one had an addict parent, then the child usually has the genetic marker for addiction. “It’s not a matter of willpower, it’s a power of being controlled by the unknown. The women, in particular, were told how to dress. Clothing should not be too revealing. Arms and legs should be covered. Long dresses or pants were ideal, with nothing too low cut. There were people in recovery for many addictions, including alcoholism, sex, drugs, gambling, co-dependency and other mental illnesses. We were also told that alcoholism was a selfdiagnosed disease. The awareness had to come from the alcoholic himself in order for him to change. At lunchtime, we were allowed to reunite with our “significant others,” and I couldn’t wait to see mine. I was not disappointed, either. Steve looked better than I’d seen him in a long time. After the detox program and three meals a day, his blue eyes were crystal clear; his hair was clean, fresh and golden in the sunlight. He was grinning in his floral island print shirt that we’d bought together in Antigua. I sighed with relief at his first grin. We hugged, but briefly, because we were not allowed to have physical contact on the premises. Steve showed me around the facility to his “casita,” the room he shared with a fellow alcoholic, and then he took me on a walk around the desert gardens to the “Serenity Trail.” He read the painted wooden signs along the way out loud: Step one, “We admitted we were powerless over alcohol and that our lives had become unmanageable.” “That means I can’t,” said Steve. Step two, “Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.” “That means He can,” he continued. “Made a decision to turn my will and my life over to God…” “That means I’ll let Him,” he smiled. But it wasn’t until we got to step eight and then nine that he took me in his arms and looked me in the eyes, reciting the words from his memory: “Made amends to such people wherever possible.” Out of sight of the buildings, and there amongst the mountains, the desert, the lizards and the twelve steps, he promised me he was really going to do it this time. I believed him. I had to believe him. I wanted so much... to believe him. After our walk, we separated for our meetings, and later in the day he introduced me to several of his new friends. There was Richie from Minnesota, who was in recovery from a cocaine addiction, and his wife, Abbey, who was there for family week like I was. There were Bill and Richie, and a redheaded woman from
