Colombo Dockyard struck Gold...

Again! 3

DND Management Inc. Owned/Managed bulk carrier

Ionian Sea repairs completed successfully.

MV. Ionian Sea accommodated in Colombo Dockyard’s 125,000 dwt drydock No. 04 during her repair call.

Ms. Elia Kostapoulou - entered Colombo Dockyard’s records as the first - ever ‘Lady Superintendant’.

DND Management Inc. Greece managed Bulk carrier Ionian Sea (Dwt 37.295) called in for major drydocking and lay up repairs during November 2011, creating a record for the shipyard with the first lady superintendent in attendance. Colombo was the best option for the owners/ managers given the strategic location placing the vessel closer to her discharging port (in India) and next employment. During this drydocking call the major work scope consisted of steel renewal (25 Tons), mainly tank internals and cross deck stiffeners. Stern tube seal renewal and related repairs along with routine drydock repairs. This was owners/ manager’s first experience with Colombo Dockyard. The owner’s interests were looked after by Mr. Antoine Doucas – owners Representative and Ms. Elia Kostapoulou - Superintendent Engineer. This is the first time in the history of the shipyard that a Lady Superintendent had been assigned for overlooking the repairs. The yard team was headed by Ship Manager Ajith Kariyapperuma – who was well supported by all production departments to re-deliver the vessel on schedule. The owners were pleasantly surprised with the excellent facilities at their disposal coupled with the quality workmanship, professional approach to meet the owners requirements were highly appreciated. The bulk carrier was accommodated in the 125,000 DWT drydock for her repair requirements and thereafter she was accommodated at yard’s alongside pier. The repairs were carried out meeting the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) classification society requirements.

Pacific International Lines (PIL) UK, owned Container Carrier

MV. Kota Hallus completed repairs one day ahead of schedule

MV. Kota Halus accommodated in Colombo Dockyard’s 125,000 dwt drydock No. 04 during her repair call.

PIL, UK owned container carrier Kota Halus (Dwt 18,872) called in for her first special survey repairs during November 2011. The repairs were completed within 7 days, one day ahead of the quoted period. Colombo was the obvious choice for the owners/ managers given the strategic location placing the vessel on the trading route, the vessel discharged her containers in Colombo port and moved directly into our drydocks for her repairs. During drydocking call the work package covered repairs in all sectors; blasting painting, steel renewals, piping repairs, hatch cover resting pads and other routine drydocking related repairs. The owner’s interests were looked after by Mr. Mohamed Hoque – Fleet Manager and the yard team was headed by Ship Manager Ajith Kariyapperuma – ably supported by all production departments to re-deliver the vessel ahead of schedule. The owners were pleased and highly appreciated the excellent facilities at their disposal coupled with quality workmanship and professional approach to meet the stringent standards that was required. The container carrier was accommodated in the 125,000 DWT drydock for her repair requirements and sailed out direct from the drydocks. The repairs were carried out conforming to Class NKK classification society requirements. Eastern Maritime Ltd.(Colombo) Ltd., handled the local husbanding work smoothly. Emergence of Colombo as hub for container traffic, places Colombo Dockyard as a serious contender for many container carriers touching Colombo, for their repair requirements, be it drydocking or afloat. Over the past two decades many Far Eastern and European owners over looked Colombo due to the war risk situation that prevailed in the Island. The maritime industry in Sri Lanka has seen rejuvenated activity with the dawn of Peace, lifting of all war risk restrictions, many international ship owners/ lines are looking at Colombo, Sri Lanka as a serious destination for their drydocking repairs and marine requirements.

The shipyard managed to secure necessary drydocking slots to accommodate the arriving vessel at very short notice. The owners decided to carry out the emergency repair requirement on the CPP system along with the other drydocking repairs. However, these being passenger vessels, the Shipyard will adopt extra stringent quality control and safety measures in order to ensure the vessel’s appropriateness in material and machinery. During construction of these vessels, Consultants/ Surveyors from the Shipping Corporation of India, Directorate of Shipping of India, and Merchant Maritime Department will play an important role in Survey and Inspection.
