New Beilstein Databases on Dialog The Beilstein database (File 390) has been available on Dialog since 1989 and includes the contents of the Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry, produced by the Beilstein Institute in Frankfurt in the Federal Republic of Germany, plus citations to journal literature covering organic chemistry. With the reload in 2004, the Beilstein database is now split into three separate files: Beilstein Facts (File 390), Beilstein Reactions (File 391) and Beilstein Abstracts (File 393). THE BEiLSTEIN FILES Beilstein Facts (File 390) contains structures and properties of organic substances such as melting point, boiling point, spectra data, optical properties, etc. Identity information on a substance includes Chemical Name and Synonyms (/NA, NA=), Beilstein Registry Number (BN=), Molecular Formula (MF=), Element Count, (/EC, EC=) and more. Chemical names and synonyms have been segmented in the Basic Index using the Dialog unique algorithm to permit easy searching by functional groups or substituents. Beilstein Reactions (File 391) contains preparative data and chemical reactions. Each record has a Reaction ID, lists the reactant(s) (Beilstein Registry Number and name), products (Beilstein Registry Number and name), reaction classification, reaction details and references. Reaction details may include catalyst, reagent, solvent, temperature, pressure, yield, subject studied, reaction type, etc. Beilstein Abstracts (File 393) is a new file and includes access to bibliographic data (journal articles and patents) and abstracts for references in the Facts and Reactions files from 180 of the leading journals in organic and related chemistry from 1980 to the present. Subjects covered include: Organic Chemistry, Ecological Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Chemistry of Narural Products, Bioactivity, Pharmacology, Toxicology and Ecological Chemistry. All three files are updated quarterly.

SEARCHING PUNCTUATION IN THE BASIC INDEX ON DIALOG

A new release of DialogLink 4 provides new enhancements, including extending eLinks availabihty to Microsoft® Word and Microsoft® Excel reports. The major enhancements are described below.

Search terms containing punctuation require special treatment when entered in a SELECT command. The specific treatment depends on whether you are SELECTing the term from a word- or phraseindexed field.

NEW EXTENDED DIALOG ELINKS AVAILABILITY

1. When SELECTing from a word-indexed field, all punctuation marks in a term must be replaced with the (W) operator in order for the term t o be searchable. When the searchable terms are indexed from the original record, all terms are stripped of punctuation. The punctuation marks are treated as spaces, and each part of the term is entered in its own position in the index. For example, the term PRIME-TIME is indexed as two words PRIME and TIME. To search the full term, you must reconnect the pieces using the (W) operator:

With the release of DialogLink 4.01 in September, customers who have eLinks enabled on Dialog can also get the eLinks in X M L downloads, so they are available for postprocessing in Microsoft® Word and Microsoft® Excel reports. By adding an "eLink" field to your DialogLink 4 template, you can control where the eLink displays in the finished report. The example below comes from BIOSIS Previews®. Dialog eLinks provides a hyperlink from an abstract record to the fulltext electronic record provided by a partner publisher or journal aggregator. This service provides a streamlined method for retrieving the fulltext of an eLink article to which an organization subscribes. Dialog partners with over 100 publishers and aggregators to provide access to more than 11,000 journals.

CLAIMS7U.S. Patent Files Reload Completed CLAIMS®/U.S. Patents (Files 340) was reloaded on Dialog. During the reload process IFI CLAIMS® Patent Services, the database producer, updates the U.S. Classification codes assigned to existing patents to match classification changes made by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) during the previous year. Additional reload enhancements include: • Corrections and further standardization of patent assignee names • Updates to legal status flags (e.g., REASSIGNED, REEXAMINED) to note additional post-issuance legal status information in CLAIMS^/Current Patent Legal Status (File 123) • Miscellaneous data and chemical indexing corrections In addition to the CLAIMS® granted patent record, PGP (Pre-Grant Published Application) records, introduced in October 2 0 0 1 , were also updated with the reload enhancements. The Dialog version merges PGPs and granted patents into a single record; therefore, each Dialog record represents one U.S. invention. This streamlines search and display and is a feature offered only on Dialog. Business Method Patent (BMP) indexing, added to CLAIMS® granted patent records in June of 2002, has also been reloaded and includes the enhancements described above. You can display Business Method indexing using predefined Format 9, or the BI user defined format code (e.g., T S3/2,BLl-5). With this reload Business Method indexing is current through 2004, and IFI continues to index back to 1998.

SEARCH T I P SEARCHJNO MULTI-YEAR DATE RANGES The Dialog system has a maximum capacity of 2,000 terms retrievable with the colon (:). If the colon is used to denote a range of dates (e.g., PD=19940101: 19950101), the system will consider each date to be a separate term. Therefore, a date range that exceeds about 5.5 years may exceed this maximum (2,000 divided by 365 equals approx. 5.47). When searching multi-year date ranges, express the whole years using PY=, not PD=:

Focus on Material Safety Data Sheets—OHS™ (File 332) Consistent MSDS Provide Advantages Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are fundamental sources of information about chemicals. They provide the information on physical and chemical characteristics, hazards, exposure controls, and regulatory requirements, which enable us to use chemicals safely every day. The best MSDS provide comprehensive, up-to-date, reliable information in an easy-to-use format. I lowever, all MSDS are not created equally. The quality of an MSDS is dependent on the training, support, technical references and other resources available to the MSDS author. Proprietary MSDS can be produced under a wide variety of conditions by authors working from many different perspectives. The level of training and support the authors receive and the resources available to them can vary substantially from company to company. Another important consideration is the authoring system itself. Companies that produce only small numbers of MSDS may not have a formal authoring system. As a result, there can be substantial variations in the information provided and the way it is presented. One of the guiding forces behind the development of MSDS was recognition of the need to standardize the delivery of important chemical information for the user. This standardization is an important goal that has not yet been fully realized across the industry. File 332, however, contains standardized MSDS, produced by OHS, a business of M D L Information Systems, Inc. These standardized MSDS are: • Presented in an internationally recognized ANSI sixteen-section format. These are comprehensive MSDS that include expanded data such as Department of Transportation (DOT) shipping designations, extensive physical properties, U.S. regulatory information and European Safety Data.

PY=1990:1998

not PD=19900101:19981231.

The first method will return the same results while generating fewer DialUnits.

• Created by full-time, specially trained scientific data analysts, who write, format, translate, analyze, and assess the data using an extensive reference library compiled specifically for this purpose and guided by a well-defined set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that assure the consistent interpretation and presentation of relevant information. These SOPs are available to the authors online to encourage their frequent use during the authoring process. • Subject to a multilevel quality assurance program before they are released.

For date ranges beginning and/or ending in mid-year (e.g., June 14, 1991 through October 6 , 1 9 9 6 ) use the following syntax: PD=19910614:19911231 OR PY=1992:1995 OR PD=19960101:19961006

Be sure to check the Bluesheet first because not all databases have both PY= and PD=.

Don't miss.. .Page 12 provides more information on Dialog eLinks Manager.

• Stored as data rather than text. If there is a change in an OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit, for example, it is not necessary to search through the entire collection of MSDS and change each individual one. It is only necessary to make a single change in an OSHA Exposure Limit Table, which then updates the value in all MSDS where it occurs. This characteristic of the OHS MSDS system means that updates can be made more quickly and more often. • Easily comparable making access to key information between different chemicals much easier. Standard phrases are used whenever possible to ensure that similar information is conveyed consistently across many different MSDS. • Produced in many different languages. Translations of the standard phrases are maintained in twelve key languages. The use of translated standard phrases results in consistency in both format and data between U.S. and international MSDS. • Easily managed. Few companies today work with only one or two MSDS. Many companies work with hundreds or even thousands of MSDS spread across multiple departments and locations. There are often many different users. Standardized MSDS simplify training and lend themselves much more readily to electronic storage, retrieval and use.

King's Fund (KFND) Added to Dialog DataStar The King's Fund focuses on improving health and health care, covering policy and management of health and social care services in the United Kingdom rather than clinical issues and treatments. Core subjects include National Health Service (NHS) management, social care, health inequalities, urban health and regeneration, race and health, partnerships, primary care, mental health, public involvement and workforce development in the N H S . The database contains over 75,000 bibliographic records, catalogued using an authoritative thesaurus developed with the United Kingdom Department of Health Library, as part of the Healthcare Management Information Consortium. The library collection is particularly rich in official U.K. health policy documents and in informally published "grey" literature from health and social care organizations. Articles with abstracts, indexed from English-language journals, are included, together with books, reports, pamphlets, Web publications, strategic planning documents and government circulars. Dialog eLinks to fuUtext items are included, where available, to subscribers of the publications.

THE ..END COMMAND It is possible to search for documents up to a certain date on Dialog DataStar Classic or Dialog DataStar Classic on the Web by beginning your search with the command ..END along with a specific date or time period. It works on the update date found in the A N paragraph and can be used simultaneously with ..START. Always verify the coverage of the database before entering this command. Examples: . .end ..end . . end ..end

N o w you can export documents automatically from Dialog DataStarWeb or Dialog DataStar Classic on the Web into an ISI ResearchSoft application, such as EndNote, ProCite or Reference Manager. Some of Dialog DataStar's most widely used databases including the biomedical files EMBASE®, MEDLINE®, and BIOSIS Previews® have been configured to be exported so you can manage your references collected from Dialog DataStar. Additional databases will follow. If you have one of the programs installed on your computer, the option to Export to ResearchSoft will appear on the Document and Titles pages for the databases that have been enabled. However, if a postprocessing application has not been installed, you can still save the document(s) locally with an RIS extension.

The administrator of the eLinks Manager now has the ability to define an open URL for their own custom solutions publishers and immediately see the links appear on the document page. Before, this had to be done by Dialog. This should not be confused with Custom Links, which are links to a journal's Web site (or to any specified Web site of your choice) for journals where the link to the fulltext cannot be created.
