ANNOUNCEMENTS Now Available:

MAGAZINE ASAP™, TRADE AND INDUSTRY ASAP™ DIALOG searchers now have access to the full text plus indexing of a wide variety of business and general interest periodicals. M A G A Z I N E ASAP (File 647) and TRADE & I N D U S T R Y ASAP (File 6 4 8 ) , produced by Information Access Companv, provide the complete text and indexing of over 130 publications, as well as news releases from PR Newswire, back to January 1983. Check the ASAP flyer enclosed with this issue of the CHRONOLOG for a list of publications included in the ASAP files. The complete text of each article is available for searching and can immediatelv be TYPEd, DISPLAYed, or PRINTed. With the ASAP files, you can search any combination of words from the text, as well as any of the searchable fields that vou are already familiar with in M A G A Z I N E INDEX™ (File 47) and TRADE & I N D U S T R Y INDEX™ (File 148). In addition to these two new databases, MAGAZINE INDEX (File 47) and TRADE & INDUSTRY INDEX (File 148) are now enhanced with the same full-text records found in the corresponding ASAP files. In both the INDEX (Files 4 7 and 148) and ASAP (Files 647 and 648) databases, the full text may be TYPEd, DISPLAYed, or PRINTed in Format 9. The text portion of the record, however, may be searched only in the ASAP files. The complete articles can also be DISPLAYed in Format 9 in Files 47 and 148, but the text words are not searchable in these files. The two types of files provide maximum flexibility in searching. With the ASAP files you can search even' word of the full text and thus locate very specific (and sometimes obscure) data that might otherwise not be located. With the INDEX files, you can search bibliographic data, including titles and descriptors, to search broad topics for greater precision. Regardless of which of the files you use to search (i.e., ASAP or INDEX), die full text of the articles can be TYPEd, DISPLAYed, or PRINTed in Format 9. Uses. The ASAP files are particularly useful for identifying quotations or slogans, tracking companies, products and people, and for quickly locating facts and statistical information. The complete text of articles, editorials, columns, reviews, product evaluations, and recipes is included. "Trademark Reg. U.S. Pat. & Trademark Office.

Record Content. Basic Index fields in the ASAP files include: title, caption (for graphs, tables, charts, maps), named persons, descriptors, product names (for products described, compared, or evaluated), and text. Additional Index fields in the ASAP files provide access by: author, journal name, Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code, geographic code, article type (editorial, letter, column, etc.), and special features (illustration, graph, chart, map, table, portrait). MAGAZINE INDEX and TRADE & INDUSTRY INDEX contain all of the above-listed searchable fields except text. Although the text for selected records in Files 47 and 148 can be TYPEd, DISPLAYed, or PRINTed, it is not searchable. The line count for each full-text record is indicated in all files and will help you judge the length of the article. P R Newswire. The text of PR Newswire is now searchable in File 648. The bibliographic records remain in File 148 (and the text can be TYPEd or PRINTed, but is not searchable). New PR Newswire records are still added daily to NEWSEARCH (File 211), where the text of the news releases can still be searched (and TYPEd or PRINTed). Searching the ASAP Files. Since the text of the articles in the ASAP files covers a wide range of topics, it is essential to plan your strategy carefully before going online. Use of proximity operators (nW) and (S) is recommended. In Files 647 and 648, (S) specifies that the search terms be contained in the same paragraph. To scan your results before printing the full text, use Format 6 (titles only), Format 3 (titles and bibliographic information), or Format 8 (titles and indexing). Remember that your search can be limited to descriptors (including company names and subjects) with /DE or named persons (/NA) or products (/NT) for more precise results. INDEX Files (47/148)

• For tracking companies, persons (no matter how briefly they are mentioned), products

DESCRIPTORS: books-reviews, etc. TEXT: COPYRIGHT Technical Publishing Co. 1983 "Moving data processing management out of the Dark Ages will be a continuous battle. With the right attitude and determination , it could even be fun. " This is Larry M. Singer ' s advice to readers on a methodology for getting their dp shops in step with the 1980s. His is one of the best books I' ve seen in a long time that addresses the trials and tribulations of today's dp manager. If you are looking for a book that "tells it like it is," this one1 s for you. Regardless of whether you are a project manager or the vice president of information, you can learn—and identify—with the authors that we dpers have been hiding in our closets and insists that we face the reality of such things as user involvement and personal computers. He even suggests such blasphemous acts as transferring program support to users (heaven forbid! ) . All too many books published today either take a pablum approach to dp management, or they go to the opposite extreme and try to give us an MBA thesis solution. In either case, the results are unusable. Singer gives a good cookbook approach to solving many, if not most, of the problems that confront our modern-day dp manager. The egoless management philosophy is the main thesis advocated. If we managers would work with our subordinates, peers, and users instead of trying to compete with them, we would all get along much better. Singer takes the theory one step further: if we don't become more cooperative and openminded to the realities of computing in the 1980s, he writes, we may well lose the whole proverbial ball game. I enjoy books that contain checklists and sets of rules to follow; I guess they make life easier. Otherwise, I have to read the book or article, extract the information, and create my own lists. Let's face it, we all live on lists or sets of rules. Singer's manual presents many of these guidelines in an easy to understand manner. Any dp manager can use at least one of these lists to help make his life easier and his department more responsive to user needs. Singer starts the book with a chapter addressing the dp environment as it is in the early 1980s. He doesn't pull any punches, so if you think everything is A-0K in your shop, be prepared to defend yourself. After deflating our egos, the book shows us how we can rebuild our positions with positive recommendations to get us back into the users' good graces (which we lost about 10 years ago, whether we admit it or not). After reading most of these suggestions, you'll say, "that's obvious." But it sometimes takes an observer like Singer to spell out simple things for us .

Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology Added to MARQUIS WHO'S WHO This month a new subfile is being added to M A R Q U I S WHO'S W H O (File 2 3 4 ) . Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology profiles over 16,000 outstanding leaders in current scientific and technological advancement. Biographees are scientists working in 24 basic fields and more than 300 subspecialties where frontier achievement is occurring. A variety of professions are represented— from governmental, independent, and academic research programs to leaders in medical and industrial technology.

^DIALOG CHRONOLOG

I

Records in the Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology subfile include the same comprehensive biographical information as found in all other MARQUIS WHO'S W H O profiles. Each sketch details life and career history in addition to personal and family statistics, plus home and office addresses, when available. In addition to the categorization of each biographee by professional subspecialties, each profile includes a brief description of present research or work interests in the biographee's own words. Individuals are selected for inclusion based on "current national reference interest and inquiry either because of outstanding achievement or because of the positions the}' hold." Two new searchable fields plus a subfile (SF = ) entry will be added to File 234 with the inclusion of Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology. The new fields are: R C = (for Research Code) RS = (for Research Specialty)

Barbara Anderson Named Manager of DIALOG Customer Services and Publications Barbara Anderson has been named Manager of DIALOG Customer Services and Publications, effective April 1,1984. Barbara has been with DIALOG for almost six years as Editor of the CHRONOLOG and Manager of the Publications Department (the department responsible for producing DIALOG documentation such as the Bluesheets, database chapters, and updates to the Guide to DIALOG Searching, the Pocket Guide, etc.). Her new responsibilities will include DIALOG activities in training and customer support (by telephone or written request), as well as Publications. Barbara replaces Charles Meadow, now DIALOG Development Manager for Technology Applications. The editorship of the CHRONOLOG newsletter has been transferred to Carol Wilson.

The Research Specialties and their corresponding Research Codes may be searched to identify any of the 300 subspecialty categories of the biographees' current Scientific work. The Research Specialty field contains text words describing the profession, and the Research Code field consists of seven-digit numbers. For example, the field of molecular biology mav be SELECTed with either of the following entries: SELECT RS = MOLECULAR BIOLOGY SELECT R C = 1242000 These two new fields are available only in the records from the Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology subfile. In addition, a new Subfile (SF = ) entry will be added so that you can restrict retrieval to just those records from the new subfile. The subfile is SELECTed as: SF = FS01 This entry corresponds to the subfile and the volume number of the printed equivalent. As future volumes are added, truncation may be used to gadier all profiles from the subfile (SELECT SF = FS>). Lists of all Research Specialties and Research Codes are included in the documentation chapter for File 234. (See page 84-125 for ordering information.) You may want to annotate your File 234 Bluesheet with the two new fields and subfile entry. If you are interested in what is being done on the "cutting edge" of science, BEGIN 234 (it's the free file this month) and find the leaders in Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology.

WHY THE LATE UPDATES? We have received a number of calls asking why some files have not been updated according to the schedules announced in the Bluesheets. Following is a review of the reasons for the lack of updates. Closed Files. Some files have been designated as "Closed." This means that they will never be updated. The reason is usually because thev are superseded by another file or the original supplier is no longer providing it. We often leave closed files online for searchers who need historical data. Following is a list of the closed files: AIM/ARM (File 9 ) . The file is no longer updated because the update data is now included in ERIC (File 1). A P T I C (File 4 5 ) . The file is no longer prepared by its original supplier. N I C S E M / N I M I S (File 7 0 ) . The preparation of this database was being funded by a government grant which has been completed, but not renewed. No further updates are expected. N O N F E R R O U S METALS ABSTRACTS (File 118). This file is now closed and will no longer be updated. You may want to make a note of this on your Bluesheet for File 118. SSIE C U R R E N T RESEARCH (File 6 5 ) . The file is no longer prepared bv its original supplier. Updated data is now found i n ' F E D E R A L RESEARCH IN PROGRESS (Files 265 and 266). U . S . P U B L I C S C H O O L S D I R E C T O R Y (File 120). This file is now closed and will no longer be updated. Updates to Match Printed Edition. Some files are updated only on an annual or irregular basis. The updates usually correspond to the production of the printed equivalent of the database. The following files are in this category. D & B - M I L L I O N DOLLAR DIRECTORY® (File 5 1 7 ) . This database is updated on an annual basis. The updates include additions to the database as well as corrections to old records and deletion of obsolete data.

is normally updated twice a year (in February and September) . The update is a full reload to modify and amend records and add new ones. This year there will not be a February reload, thus it will come in September. MLA B I B L I O G R A P H Y (File 7 1 ) . The cycle of the database corresponds to the editing process for the printed work of the same name and thus appears about the same time. This database is scheduled to be updated just once a vear. The update usually occurs late in the year following the year to be added (e.g., the 1983 update is expected to be available in November of 1984). RILM ABSTRACTS (File 9 7 ) . Updates generally run five or more years late (e.g., the most recent update received is for 1978 data). Updates to this database are always very late because of the editorial efforts of the database supplier to collect abstracted information from worldwide sources. For details, contact the database supplier at the address given on the File 97 Bluesheet. U . S . POLITICAL S C I E N C E D O C U M E N T S (FUe 9 3 ) . The updates of this database correspond to the production of the printed volume and were done annually (even though the Bluesheet for File 93 shows anticipated quarterly updates). The producer has announced that they now have improved software and updates can soon be expected to precede the harcopy and be done on a quarterly basis. 1982 data will be added within a month, and the update for the first quarter of 1983 should be available within a few more months. ZOOLOGICAL R E C O R D (File 185). Updates for this file correspond to the schedule for the printed work of the same name. The file is being regularly updated according to schedule but currently the most recent data are for 1981. The database provider is in the process of bringing both the hardcopy and online data up to date.

As DIALOG grows, so does the number of SearchSaves and SDIs that are stored on the system. In order to allow sufficient room for both of these features to be used by an increasing number of searchers, an adjustment must be made in the way that serial numbers are assigned. SDI serial numbers have traditionally begun with an A or a B (A7J4 or B63F, for example), but these letters are now needed for Search-Save serial numbers. So, for SDIs, A will become M, and B will become N (and O and P will be available for the future). This change will take place on the system in late April or early May. Watch for a logon flash announcing the effective date. In other words, all SDIs currendy on the system whose serial numbers begin with A are being reassigned an initial letter M (the remaining characters of the number will remain the same: A7J4 would be M7J4). Those beginning with B will be reassigned to N (B63F would be N63F). This conversion is being done automatically and requires n o action on the part of the searcher other than to note the change for purposes of EXECUTing, RECALLing, or RELEASing currently stored SDIs. The change will also appear on your invoices, since the new serial numbers will be listed rather than the old. As your new serial number SDI is run, the new number will show on the invoice; if it is not on the April invoice, then expect it on that for May. So, remember, A is M, and B is N! (May 1984)

A New Look to Prints Offline prints will soon reflect the changes of an enhanced print processing program. Each set of prints will still consist of a blue PRINTS SUMMARY page, a blue DATABASE DESCRIPTION page, and one or more white PRINTS pages containing the records requested. But both the summary page and the white pages will present new features. P R I N T S SUMMARY This first page of each set of prints ordered will now contain the label PRINTS SUMMARY in the upper left corner, followed by the appropriate user number and file number along the top of the page. Below this label, the following information will be provided: the banner (file number, name, and update status at the time of the search) of the File(s) searched; the history of the Sets selected; and the list of Prints requested, reflecting the PRINT commands issued during the search. Finally, in the upper right corner will appear a page number reflecting the pagination of all the prints contained in the batch (if prints from more than one file are printed at the same time and sent out together, the entire group will be paged continuously). The first PRINTS SUMMARY page of each package of prints will be Page 1; each page thereafter will be numbered consecutively except for the DATABASE DESCRIPTION pages which will remain unnumbered (they are considered to be the verso of the PRINTS SUMMARY page).

PRINTS Each white page containing the prints themselves will be labelled PRINTS in the upper left corner, followed by the appropriate user number, date, and PRINT command. In the upper right corner the consecutive page number will appear, and below it the "Item n of n" message already familiar to DIALOG searchers.

Ifc

The prints on each page will be headed by the file banner of the database searched, further serving to identify the prints. Titles will continue to be printed in bold face. The space available on each page will be used as efficiently as possible, with records being divided between pages where necessary (the note "cont. next page" will appear at the bottom of the first part of the record). These relatively minor changes are preparatory to further enhancements of offline prints scheduled for implementation in the coming months. These new features will also be announced in the CHRONOLOG. Stay tuned!

TRADE & INDUSTRY INDEX™ Reloaded TRADE & I N D U S T R Y I N D E X (File 148) was reloaded during the April update. In addition to record corrections, there are also two changes that will affect how the file is searched. P R Newswire Records. The text of news releases from PR Newswire is no longer part of the Basic Index in File 148. The bibliographic records, however, are still included. The full text can be TYPEd, DISPLAYed, or PRINTed in Format 9. To search for words or company names found in the text of the PR Newswire releases, use File 648, TRADE & INDUSTRY ASAP. Identifier Field Eliminated. In order to simplify online searching procedures, the Identifier field has been eliminated from all records in File 148. All subject terms previously entered in the Identifier field are now listed alphabetically in the Descriptor field. This means that the Descriptor field now consists of both Library of Congress Subject Headings and the additional subject terms created by Information Access Company (when applicable). T o limit a search to words within the Descriptor field, use the suffix /DE, e.g., SELECT PRIZE(W)CONTESTS/ DE. Filel48:Trade and Industry Index - 81-84/Mar (Copr. IAC) Set Items Description ? To search for a combination of a main descriptor and subheading (shown in the record as Mars Inc.-marketing), SELECT MARS(L)MARKETING. The Identifier field has also been eliminated from new records added to MAGAZINE INDEX™ (File 47), NATIONAL NEWSPAPER INDEX™ (File 111), LEGAL RESOURCE INDEX"' (File 150), and NEWSEARCH™ (File 211) after March 1, 1984. Identifiers for older records in these databases will be added to the Descriptor field during future reloads of these files.

ONTAP® PTS PROMT Reloaded ONTAP P T S P R O M T (File 2 1 6 ) , the ONline Training And Practice file, was recently reloaded to match the new features of the reloaded PTS P R O M T (File 16). (See CHRONOLOG, March 1984, page 84:61 for details.) A new Bluesheet for File 216 is enclosed with this issue of the CHRONOLOG newsletter.

LIMIT Changes in CHEMICAL EXPOSURE Search retrieval from CHEMICAL E X P O S U R E (File 138) may be restricted to records referring either to human or animal subjects, using the LIMIT command. In order to standardize with other files which use the same type of limits, a change has been made to the designation used to enter one of the limits. The LIMITs should now be entered as follows: LIMITn/HUMAN for records referring to human subjects LIMITn/NONH for records refcrringto nonhuman (animal) subjects The latter replaces LIMITn/ANIMAL that was used previously. Please make a note of this change on the second page of your File 138 Bluesheet and documentation chapter.

A staff member hurries to a computer terminal, where his fingers rapidly dance over the keyboard. Within seconds, a few lines, symbols, and words appear on the video screen in front of him. The cryptic images pinpoint the location of the burning building by showing what streets surround it. They also show exits and entrances to the building and the locations of electrical hookups and fire hydrants. Virtually every building in phoenix that's taller than a few stories has been located, charted, and diagramed; the information is stored in the computer's data bank. Next, the data on the fire are relayed to the terminals in all the fire stations. The fire is in Company No. 7's jurisdiction. At the station house, an official locates the fire on a wall map, gets a printout from the computer, and the officer in command speeds with his crew to the bla2e, armed with the hard copy. The fire, in the kitchen of a neighborhood restaurant, hasn't spread beyond one room. Directed by the computer printout, the crew quickly connects water lines and begins blasting water at the blaze. Within minutes the fire is out.

A public-spirited correspondent has sent us the following letter that she received. Translated from its original French, the letter and its attached form read: Dear Sirs, I am a student of musicology. On the 14th of this month, French cinemas began to show the film WAR GAMES, the story of a student who amuses himself by pirating a video game, a game that turns out to be the American national defence programme! An absurd story, made simply to show us the possible leakages of information. An informatics journal has now asked me to write an article on ways of generating passwords. I have an example for a German host, but not yet for an American. I therefore thought of Dialog. As a user of this host, would it be possible for you to fill in the attached form? Your reply would be very useful to me in re-constructing the way in which Dialog passwords are formulated. If you think that the security of YOUR password would be compromised, please return to me the form either blank or only partly completed. Study on the structure of Dialog passwords 1. Relationship between the symbols of your password: 1.1 Does your password contain two letters that are the same? yes no 1.2 Does your password contain two numbers that are the same? yes no 2. Structure of passwords Please indicate with a cross the position of the letters in your password: • • • • • • • • 3. Is the first symbol in your password a zero? yes no 4. Letters making up your password Can you give to me, in alphabetical order, the sequence of letters making up your password? 5. Address of other people using the Dialog service: END

Finding CAS Registry Numbers (RN = ) for Alloys Although allovs represent a small proportion of the DIALOG chemical substance files (Files 3 0 , 3 0 0 , 3 0 1 , 3 2 8 - 3 3 1 ) , as a class of compounds they play a critical role in research areas as diverse as catalysis, electrochemistry, metallurgy, and surface chemistn7. From the point of view of the DIALOG searcher, CAS Registry Numbers provide easy and specific access to the Chemical Abstracts literature. Base and Nonbase Alloys. Alloys are indexed and registered by CAS as specific chemical substances. Because alloys have several components they usually have several CA Index Names. Each element present to the extent of 1% or more gives rise to a CA Index Name. The element present in the greatest amount is given in the Heading Parent (HP = ) portion of a CA Index Name with the term "base." Other components are provided in other CA Index Names with the Heading Parent (HP = ) usually containing the term "nonbase." The Name Modification (NM = ) portion gives the percentage composition of all the components (single numbers or ranges), as shown below:

CAS Registry Numbers for Alloys. In chemical substance files on DIALOG, CAS Registry Numbers for alloys mav be found in several ways. If nothing is known about the composition but the trade name is given, searching in the Synonym (SY = ) field is preferred, e.g., alloys referred to as "permalloy." ? SELECT SY = PERMALLOY 1 4 SY = PERMALLOY ? TYPE 1/5 1/5/1 57687-17-9 Fe.Ni Nickel alloy(base) (9CI), Nl.Fe Permalloy 82Nl-18Fe)

The Heading Parent (HP = ) field mav be searched when the component metals are known or the base/nonbase metals are known (for compositions of 1% or more). For example, to find alloys which contain nickel as a base element and aluminum as a nonbase element, the following strategy mav be used: ? SELECT HP = NICKEL! SI BASE AND ALUMINUM 2452 HP = NICKEL(S)BASE 9449 ALUMINUM 2 592 HP = NICKEL (S) BASE AND ALUMINUM ? TYPE 2/5 2/5/1 CAS REGISTRY NUMBER: 87513-40-4 FORMULA: C.Al.Co.Cr.Mo.Ni.Ta.Ti W.Zr CANAME(S) : HP = Nickel alloy!base 1 (9CII . NM = Ni 62, Cr 16.Co 8.5. The above example will pick up alloys containing only nickel and aluminum as well as alloys which contain these two metals and others. If the composition is restricted to certain metals, searching on the Molecular Formula (MF = ) is one way to obtain more specific retrieval. The molecular formula for alloys is given always as a dot-disconnected formula in Hill order. Each individual element is not indexed with the MF = prefix. To find alloys which contain only nickel and aluminum, the molecular formula is SELECTed with die corresponding clement symbols in Hill order:

Though the individual elements are not indexed in the Molecular Formula field, the elements of an alloy are indexed with element counts of 1 for each component. Alloys may be searched using the Element Count (EC = ) field. For example, to find alloys containing aluminum, nickel, and titanium, the following terms can be used: ? SELECT EC = AL0001 AND EC = NI0001 AND EC = TI0001 9201 EC = AL0001 15975 EC = NI0001 5565 EC = TI0001 4 520 EC = AL0001 AND EC = NI0001 ANDEC=TI0001 ? Broader searches can be performed for alloys using the Group Number ( G N = ) and Periodic Index (PI = ) data derived from the molecular formula. T o find alloys of any of the noble metals, copper, silver, or gold (GN = B1) and any of the transition metals, iron, cobalt, or nickel (GN = B8, PI = T1), the following strategy may be used: ?
