Today, DOK Leipzig has grown into an international centre of competence for documentary and animated film that is active throughout the year. In addition to regular film screenings in Leipzig, we compile film programmes for festivals and cultural institutions across the globe, support scientific projects and media research, promote media competence in young people, train young talents as well as experienced filmmakers, network the industry and, thanks to our international partnerships, open up new markets for its players, and promote the distribution of artistic films of outstanding quality – for example on our VOD platform www.DAFilms.com.

DOK Industry is the festival’s industry platform. More than 1,500 international industry visitors annually make DOK Leipzig one of the foremost hubs of the documentary film industry in Europe, while its international orientation is unique in Germany. The goal of DOK Industry is to promote, finance and distribute creative documentary films which inspire the audience, open windows to other worlds and enable them to form their own view of the world, free from any form of patronizing. DOK Industry offers international guests access to the German documentary film market, provides deep insights into current developments on the international scene, helps finance projects and market completed films and tackles the big challenges faced by filmmakers, producers, television editors, distributors, film funding institutions and other branches of the industry in times of radical change. In addition, DOK Industry encourages the players to assume an active role in re-shaping the parameters of media politics. DOK Industry creates networks between filmmakers from all over the world, the independent scene, the cinemas, television and the new media, between the arts and the media industry. DOK Industry’s particular concern is to create a personal and friendly atmosphere that fosters encounters at eye level and generates a sense of the enthusiasm and courage which the world and the documentary film need.
DOK MARKET DOK Market offers television buyers, sales experts, distributors, festival programmers, journalists and other industry visitors a professional digital video library where they can view all festival films and 150 additional new productions individually. The DOK Market Catalogue lists all documentary and Animadoc films in alphabetical order along with all relevant information about running time, year of production, country of origin, format as well as all important distribution details such as co-producers and television
networks involved, festival participations, and distribution contacts. DOK Market also serves as a networking platform for copyright owners and exploiters.
INTERNATIONAL DOK LEIPZIG CO-PRODUCTION MEETING The International Co-Production Meeting offers producers an efficient form of networking with international colleagues and experts and helps initiate and finance international co-productions. Scheduled one-on-one meetings give producers an opportunity to introduce themselves, their company and their new project to colleagues from other countries as well as commissioning editors, distributors, film funding institutions and other potential partners. In addition, every participant gets detailed information about the markets of the respective guest countries and an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences.
WILD AT HEART New times need new forms: “Wild at Heart” is a World Café Format that encourages a new dialogue culture designed to show the industry ways out of the crisis. “Wild at Heart” facilitates open and honest exchanges at eye level outside professional hierarchies. This is where established professionals and young talents, filmmakers, producers, distributors, television editors and film funding institutes come together to think outside the box and discuss the future.
DOK SUMMITS/DOK PODIUMS The DOK Summits and DOK Podiums address the latest developments and trends in the international documentary film industry. New modes of documentary film exploitation, alternative distribution channels and strategies, changing audience behaviour, new technical formats as well as new fields of production and funding opportunities demand constant learning from filmmakers and

producers who want to stay competitive in the international market. DOK Industry sees its primary task in facilitating access to this highly relevant information and encouraging participants to actively shape these processes.
DOK INDUSTRY TALKS Daily Talks with industry experts and producers/ filmmakers, covering topics such as distribution and marketing options for your film, as well as general introductions into film marketing and the who is who of the international industry.
NETWORKING: GET TOGETHERS/DOK LOUNGES From Tuesday to Friday during the festival week, partners of DOK Leipzig invite the accredited professionals to the Festival Centre from 6.30 to 7.30 p.m. A regular slot for all visitors to meet, talk and have the first glass of wine of the evening. At 10 p.m., the late Lounges start where people can continue their conversations, celebrate and dance! Companies, institutions and partners of DOK Leipzig can book and organise the Get Togethers and Lounges as a promotion opportunity.
DOK TRAINING
DOK Training, DOK Leipzig’s training platform, accompanies the annual film festival with a range of events and organises innovative workshops throughout the year. DOK Training supports encounters and transfer of knowledge between experienced international professionals and young talents. Film and media makers from the fields of documentary and animated films can choose from a whole range of opportunities for training, creative exchange and the development of their projects. In the Master Classes, legends of documentary and animated film offer memorable insights into their way of working and oeuvre. In Cross Media Case Studies and Presentations, international producers demonstrate how artistic quality and 360° media can be combined. And the DOK Leipzig Net Lab offers film and media makers practical support for their projects and networking opportunities with experienced colleagues. DOK Training is active throughout the year with its brand-new Rough Cut Workshop DOK.Incubator, where documentary filmmakers get valuable creative feedback on the structure and narrative approach of their films and distribution and marketing strategies for their projects. The results are then presented at DOK Leipzig.
DOK PROJECTS
“Ah, you work for a film festival! Great, and what do you do the rest of the year?” DOK Leipzig has long been more than just a week in autumn replete with films. In addition to the preparation for and follow-up after the festival and preview trips to many corners of the earth, Leipzig has long since evolved into a competence centre for documentary and animated films. We regularly present special screenings at Leipzig’s cinemas and “Best of DOK Leipzig” or thematic film programmes at festivals and cultural institutes across the world. Our curators and heads of programming share their expertise as tutors, seminar facilitators or keynote speakers and serve on juries and important funding boards. We care particularly about working with children and young people. In our school education project “DOK Education”, school kids see extraordinary documentaries on the screen and then discuss them with the directors and their schoolmates. The project also comprises exciting workshops during the festival and training for young journalists in our “DOK Spotters” programme. The agonizing intervals between festivals are best filled by going to our Doc Alliance Films Online Portal. Doc Alliance is a coalition of seven European documentary film festivals intended to overcome the competition between festivals in order to work together for the promotion of feature-length artistic documentaries in Europe and beyond.
DOK EDUCATION Among the festival’s foremost tasks are teaching media competence and introducing young people to artistic auteur films. Our goal is to strengthen young people’s democratic skills, teach them a critical approach to the media and encourage them to think for themselves. For several years, DOK Leipzig’s DOK Education project has been offering teachers the opportunity to watch selected documentary films at the cinema with their classes. The films are selected to fit into their curriculum, complementing and illustrating the scheduled subject matters. Special drawn up materials introducing the genre of the documentary film and highlighting special aspects in the form and content of the respective films provide optimal preparation for the screenings. Members of our team will go into the schools on request to prepare the classes for their visit to the cinema. In the “DOK Spotters” programme, media professionals support school kids who want to try their hand at journalism. During the festival, exciting animated and documentary film workshops featuring all kinds of DIY elements complete our range of activities targeted at children and young people. DOK Leipzig’s latest addition is an offer of further training for teachers and trainee teachers, consisting of half-day introduction courses to teaching the documentary film genre. Over the past few years, DOK Leipzig has evolved into a much sought-after centre of competence for national and international documentary and animated films. Our renowned film experts annually view a majority of the international and German productions of both genres at the most important international film festivals, follow current trends and developments and are supported by advisors around the globe. Our programmers, advisors and curators bring their programming expertise to the job, but also experience and know-how gained from their activities as filmmakers, dramaturgs, writers, film scholars or historians. Our festival director and heads of programming teach, research and write about documentary and animated films and regularly serve on juries and funding boards. They act as tutors in international workshops and are actively involved in debates concerning media politics as well as the work of the important film organisations. We are globally recognized for our unique know-how in the field of animated documentaries, whose home is Leipzig. Programmes curated by DOK Leipzig have been screened to great acclaim in, among others, Austria, Chile, China, Croatia, Egypt, France, Germany, India, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia and the USA. Members of the DOK Leipzig team have worked as experts in Bulgaria, Chile, China, the Czech Republic, Germany, India, Italy, Poland, Uruguay and other countries.
Since 2006, this initiative of the European documentary film festivals CPH:DOX Copenhagen, Doclisboa, DOK Leipzig, FID Marseille, IDFF Jihlava, Planete Doc Film Festival Warsaw and Visions du Réel Nyon has been successfully promoting the distribution of auteur documentaries and contributing to making them accessible to a broad audience. The Doc Alliance Selection, for example – an annual selection of outstanding European documentary films by young talents – is not just a fixed part of the programmes of the seven member festivals, but also a high quality package of films screened by partner festivals across the globe. In addition, the www.DAFilms.com film portal makes more than 700 excellent documentary films available as streams or downloads for a small fee – a Doc Alliance project responding to the radical upheavals in media reception today. Co-operations with distinguished publications have created synergies capable of further development. A medium-term expansion of Doc Alliance by adding further partner festivals is planned in order to secure the diversity of artistic documentaries in Europe and be able to exert more combined influence on film political decisions.

IDEA DOK FUND DOK Festival, DOK Industry, DOK Training, DOK Projects – over the past years, the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film has transformed itself from a mere film festival to an institution that consistently supports the creation, financing and distribution of extraordinary documentary and animated films and is active throughout the year. One element, which will form an ideal complement to the existing platforms, is still at the development stage: the DOK Fund. Today, the documentary film market is in a phase of radical change brought about by digitisation. Traditional models of financing and distribution have ceased to work and television’s role as a partner of the auteur film is in decline. In view of these upheavals, film festivals are becoming enormously important. Not only do they provide attractive screening platforms and cultural events, they must also shoulder more of the responsibility for financing and distributing ambitious artistic animated and documentary films if they wish to maintain their programming standards in the future. Because more and more often, these genres fall through the grid of the commercially oriented film and media funding institutions, while public broadcasters resort to facile mainstream productions, push the two genres to the nocturnal programme margins and have long given up any attempt to provide adequate financing. That’s why we need the DOK Fund to support extraordinary, artistic, radical, political, bold, formally innovative, thrilling or excitingly calm films. These films from across the globe are meant to push the boundaries of the genres and pioneer new aesthetics and narrative approaches. To do this, we need like-minded partners – institutions with a cultural mission, passionate patrons and committed fellow campaigners. IDEE DOK FONDS
Die Initiative der europäischen Dokumentarfi lmfestivals CPH:DOX Kopenhagen, Doclisboa, DOK Leipzig, FID Marseille, IDFF Jihlava, Planete Doc Film Festival Warschau und Visions du Réel Nyon arbeitet seit 2006 erfolgreich daran, die Verbreitung des Autoren-Dokumentarfi lms zu fördern und diesen einem breiten Publikum zugänglich zu machen. So ist die Doc Alliance Selection – eine jährliche Auswahl herausragender europäischer Nachwuchsdokumentarfi lme – nicht nur fester Bestandteil des Programms der sechs Festivals, sondern wird auch von Partnerfestivals weltweit als hochwertiges Filmpaket ausgewählt und nachgespielt. Das Filmportal www.DAFilms.de macht zudem über 700 exzellente Dokumentarfi lme gegen eine kleine Gebühr zum ‚Stream‘ und ‚Download‘ verfügbar – ein Doc Alliance Projekt, mit dem sich die Partner den tiefgreifenden Umbrüchen in der Medienrezeption stellen. Durch Kooperationen mit renommierten Publikationen wie Zeit Online oder Brand Eins sind ausbaufähige Synergien entstanden. Mittelfristig ist eine Erweiterung der Doc Alliance durch weitere Partnerfestivals geplant, um die Vielfalt des künstlerischen Dokumentarfi lms in Europa zu sichern und gemeinsam verstärkt auf fi lmpolitische Belange Einfluss nehmen zu können.
DOK Leipzig hat sich in den letzten Jahren zu einem gefragten Kompetenzzentrum für den nationalen und internationalen Dokumentar- und Animationsfi lm entwickelt. Unsere renommierten Filmexperten sichten jährlich auf den wichtigsten internationalen Festivals einen Großteil der weltweiten und deutschen Produktionen beider Genres, verfolgen aktuelle Trends und Entwicklungen und werden von Beratern rund um den Globus unterstützt. Unsere Programmer, Berater und Kuratoren bringen neben ihrer Programmarbeit Erfahrungen und Sachverstand aus ihrer Tätigkeit als Filmemacher, Dramaturg, Autor, Filmwissenschaftler oder -historiker ein. Die Programmverantwortlichen des Festivals lehren, forschen und schreiben über Dokumentar- und Animationsfi lm und wirken regelmäßig in Jurys und Fördergremien mit. Als Tutoren sind sie in internationalen Workshops tätig und bringen sich aktiv in medienpolitische Diskussionen und die Arbeit der wichtigen Filmverbände und Institutionen ein. „Ah, Sie arbeiten für ein Filmfestival! Toll, und was machen Sie den Rest des Jahres?“ DOK Leipzig ist längst viel mehr als nur eine Woche Kino satt im Herbst. Neben der Vor- und Nachbereitung des Festivals und Sichtungsreisen in viele Winkel der Welt hat sich Leipzig längst zu einem Kompetenzzentrum für den Dokumentar- und Animationsfi lm entwickelt. Wir präsentieren regelmäßig Sondervorstellungen in Leipziger Kinos und „Best of DOK Leipzig“-Reihen sowie thematische Filmprogramme bei Festivals und in Kulturinstitutionen weltweit. Unsere Kuratoren und Programmverantwortlichen geben ihr Fachwissen als Tutoren, Seminarleiter oder ‚Key Note Speakers’ weiter und wirken in Jurys und wichtigen Fördergremien mit. Besonders am Herz liegt uns die Arbeit mit Kindern und Jugendlichen. Im Rahmen des Schulvermittlungsprojektes „DOK macht Schule“ sehen Schüler außergewöhnliche Dokumentarfi lme im Kino und diskutieren diese anschließend mit den Regisseuren und ihren Mitschülern. Hinzu kommen spannende Workshops während des Festivals und das Training von Nachwuchsjournalisten im Rahmen unserer „DOK Spotters“. Die schmerzlichen Pausen zwischen den Festivals kann man am besten mit unserem Online-Portal Doc Alliance Films überbrücken. Die Doc Alliance ist ein Zusammenschluss von sieben europäischen Dokumentarfi lmfestivals, die die Konkurrenz zwischen Festivals überwinden wollen und sich stattdessen gemeinsam für die Promotion abendfüllender künstlerischer Dokumentarfi lme in Europa und darüber hinaus einsetzen.
DOK MACHT SCHULE Zentrale Aufgaben des Festivals sind die Vermittlung von Medienkompetenz und Heranführung an den künstlerischen Autorenfi lm. Ziel ist es, die Demokratiefähigkeit Jugendlicher zu fördern und sie zum kritischen Umgang mit Medien sowie zu selbstständigem Denken anzuregen. Seit mehreren Jahren bietet DOK Leipzig Lehrern mit seinen „DOK macht Schule“Projekt die Möglichkeit, mit ihren Schülern ausgesuchte Dokumentarfi lme im Kino anzuschauen. Die Filme passen zum Lehrplan und ergänzen und veranschaulichen den regulären Unterrichtsstoff inhaltlich. Mit Hilfe von speziell erstellten Schulmaterialien, die an das Genre Dokumentarfi lm heranführen und inhaltliche und formale Aspekte des Films herausarbeiten, können die Filmvorführungen optimal vorbereitet werden. Auf Wunsch kommen unsere Mitarbeiter in die Schule und bereiten die Klassen auf den Schulkinobesuch vor. Im Rahmen der „DOK Spotters“ können sich Schüler mit Hilfe von Medienprofis als Nachwuchsjournalisten ausprobieren. Spannende Animations- und Dokumentarfilmworkshops während des Festivals ergänzen mit jeder Menge DIY unsere Aktivitäten für Kinder- und Jugendliche. Neu im Angebot von DOK Leipzig ist die Fortbildung von Lehrern und Referendaren, die wir in halbtägigen Seminaren in das pädagogische Arbeiten mit dem Genre Dokumentarfilm einführen. Legenden des Dokumentar- und Animationsfi lms geben in den Meisterklassen unvergessliche Einblicke in Ihre Arbeitsweise und ihr Lebenswerk. In Cross Media Fallstudien und Präsentationen zeigen internationale Macher, wie sich künstlerischer Anspruch mit 360° verbinden lässt. Und das DOK Leipzig Net Lab bietet Film- und Medienschaffenden sowohl praktische Unterstützung für ihre Projekte als auch die Gelegenheit zum Networking mit erfahrenen Kollegen. DOK SUMMITS/DOK PODIEN Die DOK Summits und DOK Podien thematisieren die neuesten Entwicklungen und Trends in der internationalen Dokumentarfi lmszene. Neue Auswertungsmöglichkeiten für Dokumentarfi lme, alternative Vertriebswege und -strategien, geändertes Zuschauerverhalten, neue technische Formate sowie neue Produktionsfelder und Fördermöglichkeiten fordern von den Filmemachern und Produzenten permanente Fortbildung, um international konkurrenzfähig zu bleiben. DOK Industry sieht es als wichtige Aufgaben an, den Zugang zu diesen höchst relevanten Informationen zu erleichtern und animiert gleichzeitig zur aktiven Mitgestaltung dieser Prozesse. NETWORKING: GET TOGETHERS/DOK LOUNGES Von Dienstag bis Freitag laden Partner von DOK Leipzig in der Festivalwoche von 18:30 – 19:30 ins Festivalzentrum ein. Ein fester Termin für alle Akkreditierten, um sich zu treffen, auszutauschen und das erste Glas Wein des Abends zu trinken. Ab 22:00 beginnen die späten Lounges zum Weiterreden, Feiern und Tanzen!
