Eine neue Runde SonneMondSterne, es ist inzwischen die achte, steht im August ins Haus und auch diesmal gibt es wieder große Namen auf dem Lineup. Die Chemical Brothers werden in Saalburg vorbei schauen und nicht nur das. Sie werden auf dem SonneMondSterne ihren einzigen Liveauftritt in Deutschland spielen. Doch was sind schon alle Namen dieser Welt für den, der schon einmal zum SMS an der Bleilochtalsperre gefeiert hat. Es ist dieses Gefühl, auf das auch wir uns schon wie verrückt freuen.

Ständig wird man hin und her gewirbelt.

Man findet es riesig, gigantisch. Dann, im nächsten Moment schlendert man übers Festival und findet, die einzige Normabweichung hier sind durchweg freundliche Gesichter. Das hat man so zu Hause nicht und wahrscheinlich auch nicht im Urlaub. Schnell werden aus drei Tagen gefühlte drei Wochen. Damit das Ganze nicht langweilig wird, gibt es auch in diesem Jahr neben der Musik viel zu erleben. Der SMS-Fußballcup wird auch in diesem Jahr wieder eine höchst spannende Sache, kann man doch wieder einigen Artists und Medienleuten kräftig vors Schienbein treten. Nein, natürlich gilt Fairplay und im letzten Jahr regelte sich die Sache streckenweise ganz von selbst, da einigen Aktiven recht schnell die Puste ausging. Auf alle, die mit Fußball allein nicht wirklich ausgelastet sind, wartet das obligatorische Beachvolleyballfeld mit Zuschauergarantie. Zur Abkühlung geht’s dann schnell noch aufs Bananenboot und der Abend kann kommen. Musik satt. Licht satt.

Party satt. Ansonsten bleibt wie immer alles anders.

Man sieht sich von 6. bis 8. August in Saalburg. Bis dahin feiert noch schön und nicht zu heftig!

Celebrating summer for the eighth time this August, SonneMondSterne once again features a quite impressive cast of classy entertainment. Among others, the Chemical Brothers will stop by at Saalburg to play their one and only concert in Germany this year. But why should we start dropping names, if all we long for is this certain feeling, which makes SMS such a very special place to be. It’s bodacious.

Some say it’s gigantic. But in the next moment you may find yourself strolling the area and the only thing that seems out of norm is this incredible amount of unrestrained happiness. This is SMS – our little home away from home, our

(ever changing) vision of a holiday to remember. A

place in time, where

three days can easily

feel like weeks among good

friends. To make this feeling last, we offer a lot more activities than just music alone. The SMS.SoccerCup surely will be one of the more enthralling events, as it is your best possibility to tackle some (shins of) artists and media partners. Umm … no, just kidding – despite the spirit of competition it’s all about fairplay, and this holds true for both, sports and festival. However, last year’s SoccerCup found some of the – then breathless – players unable to tackle anyone, revealing a serious lack of training. If you’re not into soccer, try the bright sands of our beach volley ball area or cool down aboard the famous (and very yellow) banana boat. You’ll need to, for the summer nights are getting hot … As life is more than just being alive, change is the vital part of constancy. So take care of yourselves until we meet in Saalburg – There’s something coming your way!

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS

Goldfrapp

Tom Rowlands und Ed Simons werden mit ihrer krassen Trademark-Mixtur aus Techno, Brit-Pop und Nu School Breaks exklusiv beim SMS und nirgendwo sonst in Deutschland blockrocken. 1995 mit ihrem ersten Album vom Club quasi direkt in die Rockstadien katapultiert – und in Folge auch schon mal mit einem Grammy nicht als bester Dance-Act, sondern für das beste Rock-Instrumental bedacht – sind die Chemical Brothers wohl der elektronische Act, der das breiteste Publikum anspricht. Spekulationen galore werden ihrer Performance zusätzlich einheizen: Spielen sie neuen Stoff, geht es ab in den Vorruhestand, oder wird doch alles ganz anders?

Könnte sein, dass sie hier einen der letzten LiveGigs überhaupt geben.

Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons will be blockrocking their hefty trademark mixture of techno, britpop and nuskool breaks exclusively at SMS, and nowhere else in Germany. Catapulted from the clubs almost directly to the rock stadiums - and then presented with a Grammy not as best dance act, but for best rock instrumental -, the Chemical Brothers are surely the electronica act appealing to the widest audience. Abundant speculation will fire up their performance some more: will they be playing new material, are they headed for early retirement, or something else entirely? Who knows, they might be playing one of their last ever live gigs here.

Aus der plüschig-verträumten, mit PsychedeliaBildchen beklebten Ecke ihres ersten Albums sind Goldfrapp mit dem Nachfolger Black Cherry letztes Jahr ganz schön rausgeprescht, direkt hinein in einen arty Dance-Saal aus harschen, scheppernden 80s-Beats und eindringlichen Synthies. Hier wird nicht mehr versucht, zaghaft einen Fuß auf die Schwelle zu setzen, jetzt werden die Türen mit glitzernden Plateaustiefeln ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste aufgetreten. Die barocke Kostümierung wurde dabei natürlich nicht ganz abgelegt, sondern nur so weit, um etwas mehr Körperlichkeit zu zeigen. Goldfrapp sind noch immer artifiziell und voller Referenzen, wie es sich für guten Pop gehört.

With their second album, Black Cherry, Goldfrapp have stormed out of the velvety, dreamy, psychedelia-adorned retreat of its predecessor, and straight into a dancehall of harsh, clanging 80s beats and insistent synthesizers. This isn’t trying to politely slip a foot over the threshold, this is kicking open the doors with glittering platform boots, no prisoners taken. Of course the baroque costume hasn’t disappeared altogether, it’s only been loosened to reveal a little more flesh.

Der Mann mit der sexy Zahnlücke und der Schlaumeierbrille, der von seinem angestammten Platz hinter drei Turntables knochenharten Soul verströmt, gilt seit Jahren als einer der besten DJs weltweit. Mit der Rave-Szene in England Ende der 80er ist Carl Cox das geworden, was er immer noch ist: The 3 Deck Wizard. 1988 hat er als Erster drei Plattenspieler eingesetzt und das zelebriert, was nun zum Standard wurde, will man in der Superstar-DJ-Liga mitspielen. Anfang der 90er stand er schon im Lift hoch zur Popstar-Etage, um dann aber doch entschieden auf B für Basement zu drücken und weiterhin Partys überall auf der Welt Kopf stehen zu lassen. Das danken wir ihm noch heute nach jeder Wahnsinnsnacht.

The man with the smart-arse glasses and the sexy gap between his teeth, radiating rock hard soul from his traditional vantage point behind three turntables, has been rated among the best DJs in the world for years. On the UK rave scene at the end of the 80s Carl Cox became what he still is to this day: the 3 Deck Wizard. In 1988 he was the first to use three turntables, celebrating what has since become standard for aspiring DJ superstars. In the early 90s he was already standing in the elevator up to pop stardom, but instead resolutely pressed B for basement and went on turning parties upside down all over the world. And for that we’re still grateful to him after each and every awesome night.

Sven Väth ist immer noch der Techno-DJ schlechthin. Er steht wie kein anderer für Techno als eine allumfassende Weltanschauung, als Lebensphilosophie – und das seit mittlerweile 20 Jahren. Seine nicht zu bremsende Leidenschaft, ja, Besessenheit, mit der er wieder und wieder hinter den Plattenspielern steht – teils in endlosen 18-Stunden-Sets –, überträgt er in jeder Nacht aufs Neue auf die Crowd.

Dass er dafür geliebt und regelmäßig zum beliebtesten DJ des Landes gekürt wird, ist nicht nur mehr als verdient, es ist für jemanden, der so viel gibt, auch notwendig. „Der Kick kommt, wenn ich sehe, dass bei den Leuten eine Tür aufgeht. Dass sie eine spirituelle Erfahrung machen. Das gibt mir Energie zurück.“ Sven Väth is still the techno DJ. Like no other, he represents techno as an all-encompassing philosophy, a way of life – and he’s been doing it for the past 20 years. The unstoppable passion, the obsession that drives him to stand at the turntables again and again – sometimes in endless 18-hour sets – spreads into the crowd, again and again, every night. Lamb

The Orb

Immer noch werden Lamb gerne mit dem etwas verstaubten Etikett TripHop behängt, dabei schweben sie schon längst in ihrem ganz eigenen zauberhaften Klangkosmos. Auf ihrem vierten Album Between Darkness And Wonder lassen sie auch akustische Gitarre und echtes Schlagwerk herein, die Breakbeats sind weiter in den Hintergrund gerückt, obwohl sich Soundderwisch Andy Barlow manchmal mit voller Wucht auf seinen Maschinenpark zu werfen scheint. Über allem erhebt Louise Rhodes ihre unbeschreibliche Stimme, die Lamb diese geheimnisvolle, introvertierte Aura verleiht. „Nur durch die Erfahrung von Dunkelheit kann man das Licht sehen“, sagt Louise. Also macht euch bereit für die Erleuchtung!

Lamb are still all too often saddled with the somewhat outdated label triphop, though they’ve actually long since departed into their very own magical soundsphere. On their fourth album, Between Darkness And Wonder they let in acoustic guitars and real drums; the breakbeats have drifted further into the background, even if it sometimes seems as if sound maniac Andy Barlow were literally throwing himself onto his machines. Above all this, Louise Rhodes’ indescribable voice rises, giving Lamb that mysterious, introverted aura. “Only by experiencing darkness can you see the light”, says Louise.

Alex Paterson und seine Klangforschertruppe, darunter Jimmy Cauty von The KLF und Thomas Fehlmann of Palais-Schaumburg-, Basic-Channel- und Kompakt-Fame, waren als The Orb diejenigen, die Ambient erst in den Club brachten und Rave eine ganz neue, ungemein weite Klangwelt eröffneten.

The Orb‘s Musik ist abgespacet im wörtlichen Sinne, nämlich völlig losgelöst durch Raum und Zeit driftend, der Weltall-Soundtrack aus dicht ineinander gewobenen Flächen und Ambient-Echos. Mit U.F.Orb schafften sie es 1992 ganz an die Spitze der britischen Albumcharts und brachten auch schon eine 40-minütige Single in die Top Ten. Zuletzt ließen sie ihren Knisterdub auch wieder ordentlich tanzen.

It was Alex Paterson and his team of sound researchers, among them Jimmy Cauty of The KLF and Thomas Fehlmann of Palais Schaumburg, Basic Channel and Kompakt fame, who, as The Orb, first brought ambient music to the clubs, opening up a brand new and very wide world of sound to rave music. The Orb’s music is spaced out in the literal sense, drifting through space and time, entirely detached, an intergalactic soundtrack of tightly interwoven musical planes and ambient echoes.

U.F. Orb took them to the top of the British album charts in 1992, and they once even infiltrated the top ten with a 40-minute single. Lately they’ve got their crackly dub tunes dancing again too.

Leeroy Thornhill (x-Prodigy)

Der Mann, der bei Prodigy mit seinem wilden Tanzstil glänzte, hat als Produzent und DJ ganz offensichtlich noch mal mehr drauf, was während seiner Zeit in der Band aber etwas in Vergessenheit geriet.

Während sein alter Weggefährte Keith Flint auf Rockpfaden wandelt, packt Leeroy Thornhill also lieber wieder seine Plattenkoffer, wie er es auch schon vor Prodigy getan hat, wirft die Turntables an und haut den Leuten Miami Bass, eine crazy Mischung aus Breaks, Samples und Electro, um die Ohren.

The man who wowed the masses with his wild dance style in the Prodigy clearly has a fair bit more to offer as a producer and DJ, though those talents were somewhat hidden during his time in the band.

While his former bandmate Keith Flint is delving into rock, Leeroy Thornhill prefers to pack his record cases like he did before he joined the Prodigy, crank up those turntables and pound his people with Miami bass, a mad mixture of breaks, samples and electronica.

Wie gut es doch tut, einen lieben alten Bekannten plötzlich kaum wieder zu erkennen und ganz neu zu entdecken. Bei Richie Hawtin hat sich sichtbar einiges verändert, zum Glück aber nicht alles. So analytisch und streng der Plastikman auf seinem großen Album Closer klingt, so fordernd brettert Hawtin immer noch in seinen DJ-Sets, die aktuell hauptsächlich von zwei per speziellem Midi-Mischpult angesteuerten Laptops gespeist werden.

Aber Hawtin kommt derzeit extrem locker rüber und experimentiert gerne auch mit Menschen und nicht nur mit Technik. Beim SMS wird es als Draufgabe ein besonderes Aufeinandertreffen mit Ricardo Villalobos geben. Das garantiert Nerven zerfetzende Spannung.

How nice to barely recognise a good old friend, and therefore to discover him all over again.

Richie Hawtin has changed a lot, but not entirely.

Analytical and austere as the Plastikman sounds on his excellent album Closer, Hawtin’s DJ sets still thunder along with undiminished force and demand, currently driven mainly by two laptops controlled through a special midi mixing desk. But Richie seems extremely laid-back at the moment, and takes pleasure in experimenting with humans as well as machines. As an additional highlight, SMS will feature a special encounter with Ricardo Villalobos. High tension guaranteed. www.plastikman.com

Was Inga Humpe und Tommi Eckart an gelebter deutscher Popgeschichte von den Neonbabies bis zu Andres Dorau mit sich rumtragen, passt in keine XL-Biografie und schon gar nicht in zehn Zeilen.

Trotzdem schaffen es die beiden immer wieder, genau all diese Popweisheit mit unglaublicher Leichtigkeit und der kecken Lakonie von Ingas Gesang in einem einzigen Song unterzubringen. Wer war wohl nicht von 2Raumwohnungs Ohrwurm Ich und Elaine oder ihrem ersten Hit Wir trafen uns in einem Garten verzaubert? Popperlen, die nicht nur mitreißen, sondern regelrecht umhauen können und ebenso tanzbar wie emotional sind. Wie singt Inga so schön: „Alles, bloß kein Geiz, sich verschwenden jederzeit.“ The amount of personally experienced German pop history, from the Neonbabies to Andreas Dorau, Inga Humpe and Tommi Eckart carry around with them wouldn’t fit into any biographical tome, no matter how weighty, never mind into a few lines. Still, with incredible ease and Inga’s sassy and succinct vocals, these two somehow manage again and again to cram all that pop wisdom into a single song. How could you not be transfixed by 2raumwohnung’s incredibly catchy Ich und Elaine or their first hit Wir trafen uns in einem Garten? Pop jewels that not only draw you in, but sweep you right off your feet, and are both danceable and emotional. As Inga sings, “anything but avarice, throw yourself away any time”.

Keine Frage: Bass is Boss. Die charmante Superboygroup aus der Hansestadt gab mit dem Titel ihres Remix-Albums die Parole aus, die sich alle Raver am liebsten quer über die Stirn tätowieren lassen würden. Und genauso müssen alle mit, wenn Erobique an den Tasten, Plattenmann DJ Koze und Stimmenimitator Cosmic DJ ihren Vibe tanzen lassen. Die Ponys liefern den unwiderstehlichen In-die-Fresse-Soul mit der dicken Funkhose untenrum. Garantiert mit jeder Menge Basslines – und zwar nicht nur für José.

No doubt about it: bass is boss. With the title of their remix album, this charming uber-boyband from Hamburg issued the watchword ravers everywhere would love to tattoo across their foreheads. Nor is anyone allowed to hang back when Erobique at the keyboards, turntable man DJ Koze and voice imitator Cosmic DJ let their vibes dance. The Ponies deliver irresistible in-your-face soul music wearing enormous funky trousers. Bursting with bass lines – and not just for José. www.internationalpony.de

Peter Kruder fEAt. MC Sugar B

Der Wiener Peter Kruder ist Mitte der 90er mit dem überragenden Erfolg eines DJ Kicks-Albums unter dem edlen Kürzel K&D zu Weltruhm auch außerhalb der Lounge- und Drum’n’Bass-Szene gelangt. Die Kunstfertigkeit und groovende Deepness der Mixe und Remixe gemeinsam mit Richard Dorfmeister brachten ihm schließlich sogar einen Remix für Popqueen Madonna ein. Mit seinem Solo-Projekt Peace Orchestra führt Kruder seinen Style in immer neue Dimensionen. Seit einiger Zeit nicht mehr mit dem alten Partner in Mix-Crime unterwegs, hat er statt dessen MC Sugar B im Gepäck. Der glänzt nicht nur mit seiner schicken Bartmode, sondern ist auch selbst famoser DJ des Wiener Dub Clubs und hat Reggae im Blut.

In the mid-90s, Viennese Peter Kruder hit worldwide fame far beyond the lounge and drum’n’bass scene with the soaring success of a DJ Kicks album under the elegant acronym K&D. The artifice and grooving deepness of his mixes and remixes with Richard Dorfmeister even earned him the opportunity to remix for Madonna. With his solo project Peace Orchestra, Kruder leads his style into ever changing dimensions.

Rather than his former partner in mixing crime, he’s currently accompanied by MC Sugar B. Notable not only for his funky beard styles, this guy is a pretty good DJ in his own right at Dub Club in Vienna, and has reggae running through his veins.

Nach seinem langen Weg durch die Clubs und dem Überfliegerjahr 2003 müsste Ricardo Villalobos hier eigentlich gar nicht mehr vorgestellt werden. Sein Debütalbum Alcachofa wurde von der DJ-Familie einhellig als Meilenstein gefeiert und war in allen Charts ganz oben zu finden. Sein unnachahmlicher DJ-Style, mit Zuschreibungen wie verspult, hypnotisch, auf jeden Fall aber euphorisierend, ist schon längst eine Dimension für sich. Ricardo lässt die Synapsen zum Sonnenaufgang tanzen.

After his long trek through the clubs and a highflying year 2003, Ricardo Villalobos really needs no further introduction. His debut album Alcachofa was unanimously hailed as a milestone by the DJ community, and topped the charts everywhere.

Mia. Zuckerbrot oder Peitsche. Die NationenspalterInnen of Grand Prix de la Chanson-Fame Mia. sind auf jeden Fall für einander genau entgegengesetzte Meinungen gut. Für viel Liebe oder viel Hass und kaum sonst was dazwischen – außer vielleicht für eine tolle Liveshow. Denn Sängerin Mieze und ihre Jungs elektrorocken sich auf der Bühne ganz ordentlich einen ab (und das nicht unbedingt immer in schwarz-rot-goldener Kostümierung). Frechheit, Hysterie und Attitüde. This guy single-handedly rocks hard enough to drench your underwear, so what on earth will happen now he’s bringing a band along?

Er wird besonders geschätzt dafür, dass er um entfesseltes Feiern und die Inszenierung des DJs weiß, das jedoch nicht mit einem beliebigen Spektakel verwechselt. In seinen Sets und eigenen Produktionen, die auf legendären Labels wie Trax und Relief ebenso veröffentlicht wurden wie auf Force Inc. oder Mental Groove, verwaltet er das Erbe von Acid und Chicago-House, aus dem er seinen eigenen, extrem perkussiven Style entwickelt.

DJ Rush is probably one of the most charismatic people on the techno circuit. He is particularly respected for knowing all about unbridled celebration and showmanship without turning the whole thing into a pointless spectacle. In his sets and productions, released on legendary labels such as Trax and Relief as well as on Force Inc. or Mental Groove, he is a custodian of the heritage of acid and Chicago house, from which he develops his own, highly percussive style. www.djrush.net

Chris Liebing Hart, aber herzlich. Die Begeisterung und Echtheit, mit der Chris Liebing seinen massiven, schreddernden Sound und die kompromisslose Party lebt, machten ihn zu einem der erfolgreichsten DJs in Deutschland. Vom Partyveranstalter in Gießen brachte er es über eine Residency im Frankfurter Omen schließlich in die Clubs aller Welt. Zweimal in Folge wurde er beim Groove-Poll zum besten Produzenten des Jahres gewählt und konnte 2003 auch den German Dance Award als bester nationaler DJ einheimsen.

Tough but tender. The enthusiasm and realness with which Chris Liebing lives massive, shredding sound and relentless party have made him one of the most successful DJs in Germany. What makes him so popular is probably his modesty, his honesty, and maybe the way his tracks so simply and inescapably lead you on to groove and euphoria. Dabei verschließt sich Laux nicht den Roots seiner Musik: Er sagt Ja zu jazzy Vibes und Technosoul im Detroit’schen Sinne, wirft aber geschmäcklerische Verästelungen und nerdy Ziselierertum gleich wieder über Bord. Als Ergebnis steht am Ende die volle Ladung Maschinen-Funk, die so was von in die Beine geht.

The boss of Kanzleramt, a techno institution rather more respected than the government body it takes its name from, is on the road again after a prolonged abstinence following his Offshore Funk project.

He’s not turning away from the roots of his music though: his is a resounding yes to jazzy vibes and techno-soul in the Detroit sense, with no time for highbrow frippery or nerdy convolutions. MC Der Brite Adam Freeland wird von einem zusehends wachsenden Publikum und vielen Kollegen als Erneuerer geschätzt, der die manchmal eingefahren erscheinenden Techno-Pfade durch frischen Sound und Tabubrüche gehörig aufmischt. Attention! Not the rock band, but a drum’n’bass act of the darkest apocalyptic kind. Anthony Rother He is the robot. Wenn es um Electro aus Deutschland geht, fällt ein Name sofort, und dann kommt lange gar nichts mehr. Wer sollte Anthony Rother auch das Quecksilber reichen können? A year ago people were saying: that funky Chilean guy from Switzerland is just about the up and coming techno artist. And now the crowds are willingly lining up to see this promise fulfilled, and to twist and swirl with him through those polyrhythmic, clicking, dizzying tracks that are so addictive. Ragga Twins Als Teil der glorreichen Ram Trilogy – gemeinsam mit Andy C und Ant Miles – ist Shimon mitverantwortlich für einige der heißesten D’n’B-Tracks der letzten Jahre. An den Turntables baut er stets auf dem typischen Ram-Vibe auf, droppt aber nicht nur streng einen Style, sondern nimmt dich mit auf eine Reise von den Klassikern bis zu mellow Tunes und hartem Stoff. An den Mics heizen die Ragga Twins ein, die mit ihren eigenen Produktionen auch schon mehrmals durch die UK-Charts gewirbelt sind.

Die beiden Jungen Gernot Bronser und Sebastian Szary sind große Breakbeat-Fans, Nostalgiker mit Notebook und zuallererst unanständige Rockschweine, die mit heavy blutenden Metal-Riff-Fingern auf die Maschinentasten schlagen. Electro mit der Zertrümmer-Das-Powerbook-Attitüde.

Under the wings of BPitch Control and a set with Ellen Alien at Sonar under their belt - what could possibly go wrong? Nothing, really. The two lads Gernot Bronser and Sebastian Szary are big breakbeat fans, nostalgics with laptops, and first and foremost rude rock pigs hitting the keys of their machines with heavily bleeding metal riff fingers.

Mit Jürgen Laarmann gründete er ein Label, produzierte zusammen mit Mijk van Dijk und teilte sich Mitte der 90er im Tresor eine Residency mit Grande Dame Ellen Allien. Der „Herr der fiesen Töne“ brettert aber nichts sinnlos aus bloßem Selbstzweck nieder, sondern verfolgt stets eine künstlerische Vision, lässt verschiedene Vibes zu. Nur was ihn selbst wegbläst, das schmettert er auch der Crowd in die Gehörgänge.

Und zwar mitten rein in die bunte Dancekiste zwischen Techno, House und Synthiepop, in der die Hooklines und Slogans nur so rumflirren. „Lust is a must“, dichtet Telemen und behauptet in Anlehnung an Faithless: „God is a computer.“ Wer will dazu Nein sagen? Ellen Allien Als Frontfrau von BPitch Control und Frontsau am DJ-Pult ist Ellen Allien erstmal eine der wenigen Frauen im Techno-Abteil, auf die sich hochnäsige Nerds und tanzwütige Massen gleichermaßen einigen können. Die Berlinerin wartet nicht auf laue Trend-Brisen, sondern aktiviert lieber selbst.

Das Do-It-Yourself-Prinzip hört man bei einer Allien-Nacht auch immer heraus: Das bekannteste Trademark ihrer atemlosen Sets ist Eklektizismus, mitunter schießt die Berlinerin weit über die Genregrenzen hinaus, um ihre Linie zu verfolgen: Die einer fantastischen Party.

The cool French cat has become a steady fixture on the international DJ circuit, and always has a knack for the right hit at the right time. And that hit might even be by avantgarde thugs like Autechre or Panasonic, or by that old house hero Marshall Jefferson. Anything goes, as long as it goes through the roof. She last demonstrated her sexy mixing tastes on Radio Caroline Vol. 1, and on her first solo album, I Com, Miss Kittin makes some proper noise. www.misskittin.com Ewan Pearson Gut zu wissen, dass von der Uni auch ein Weg zurück in die Disco führt. Ewan Pearson legte erst mal brav und erfolgreich eine akademische Laufbahn hin, bevor er es mit Ende 20 im Club poltern ließ. Und wie!

Seine Bearbeitung von Freeform Fives Perspex Sex wurde zum unbestrittenen Remixhit 2002 und ließ zahllose Floors eruptieren. In der Folge war Pearson natürlich auch mit Aufträgen für große und wohl klingende Namen ziemlich busy, und seine eigenen Tracks bei Soma schocken auch nicht schlecht.

It’s good to know there’s a way back from university to disco. Ewan Pearson sensibly and successfully pursued an academic career before he started shaking up the clubs in his late 20s. And how he shook them! His take on Freeform Five’s Perspex Sex became an unrivalled remix hit in 2002, causing countless dancefloors to erupt. Circuit Breaker Alles kollabiert, die Party explodiert, wenn genau da angesetzt wird, wo du es am wenigsten erwartest, wenn plötzlich voraussehbare Kreisläufe gesprengt werden und dir die Synapsen beinah verglühen. Klar, dass der Circuit Breaker als Produzent ebenso wie als DJ immer diese magischen Momente aufspürt und es damit zu einem der respektiertesten Break-Headz Berlins gebracht hat.

Er arbeitete bereits für Tanith und Dangerous Drums und hat nun auch sein eigenes Label ViperJive am Start.

Everything falls apart, the party explodes when the onslaught comes exactly where you least expect it, when suddenly predictable cycles are blasted open and your synapses almost melt. Circuit Breaker hunts down those magic moments, both as a producer and as a DJ, making him one of the most respected breakheadz in Berlin. Uros Umek from Lubljana is doubtless one of Slovenia’s techno pioneers. He gained respect all over Europe years ago with the hard, rough funk of his tracks and DJsets, and by now spends far more time abroad than at home. Als Produzent hatte Tobi schon Milch und DJ Hell auf der Liste, er arbeitete mit Sven Väth und Ricardo Villalobos und macht derzeit vor allem mit seinem rotzigen Electro für die Chicks On Speed und Miss Kittin Furore.

Despite having been around in the music and party biz since the early 80s, DJ Tobi Neumann didn’t take off until fairly late, at the 1995 Love Parade. But then he hit the big time like fireworks, playing his way into the hearts of the techno community from Munich to Berlin. As a producer, Tobi has Milch and DJ Hell among his credentials, he’s worked with Sven Väth and Ricardo Villalobos, and is currently causing a stir with his snotty electronica for Chicks On Speed and Miss Kittin.

Frank Lorber Lorber hat mit seinem Jailhouse Rocker Album auf Cocoon Rec. den Schritt vom DJ zum ernstzunehmenden Producer geschafft. Als gutes Frankfurter Nachtlebengewächs hat er allerdings seine Lektion von Sven Väth gelernt und den ein oder anderen CoProducer ins Studio geladen, damit auch ja nichts schief geht. Dank Leuten wie Johannes Heil, Anthony Rother, Sikora (mit dem er ja auch schon eine EP auf Konsequent produziert hat) fährt Lorber einen angenehm abwechslungsreichen Sound zwischen Minimal, Electro, Tech-Pop, Trance und gutem alten Bratz-Techno.

With his Jailhouse Rocker album on Cocoon Rec., Lorber has made the transition from DJ to serious producer. Although as a true child of the Frankfurt nightlife he learnt his lesson from Sven Väth and invited a co-producer or two into the studio to make sure nothing could go wrong. Thanks to people like Johannes Heil, Anthony Rother or Sikora (with whom he also produced an EP on Konsequent), Lorber’s sound pleasantly diversifies somewhere between minimal, electro, tech-pop, trance and good old full-on techno.

B. im Dorian Gray), hat der Techno-Szene in diesem Lande und der elektronischen Musik allgemein jedoch einen noch größeren, kaum schätzbaren Dienst durch etwas anderes erwiesen, nämlich durch die Gründung von Groove 1989. Außerdem war er Betreiber des Monza in Frankfurt/M. und haut seit mittlerweile zwei Jahren mit dem Label Get Physical deepen und sehr dopen House raus.

T. has been active as a DJ since the mid-80s, and with some success (at Dorian Gray for example), but he did the techno scene in Germany and electronica in general a far greater – almost invaluable – service by something entirely different, namely the founding, in 1989, of Groove magazine. He also managed Monza in Frankfurt, and has for the past two years been churning out deep and very dope house on the Get Physical label.

Phonique Michael Vater ließ sich Anfang der 90er ganz bewusst von der Pariser Szene und im Besonderen Laurent Garnier infizieren und steht als DJ Phonique immer noch für einen speziellen frankophilen Charme, ohne dabei aber nur auf einen Sound fixiert zu sein. Von Techno über Disco bis zu Breaks geht alles, Hauptsache, es ist irgendwie slick, glitzernd und natürlich definitivement phonkey. Ebenso wie auch sein eigener Stuff auf Poker Flat oder Intim und seine Remixe, beispielsweise für das Sonarkollektiv.

Michael Vater consciously allowed himself to be infected by the Paris scene, especially Laurent Garnier, in the early 90s, and, as DJ Phonique, still stands for that particular Francophile charme,

without focussing too much on any one sound.

Anything from techno to disco to breaks goes, as long as it’s somehow slick, sparkling and naturellement phonkey. Like his own stuff on Poker Flat or Intim, or his remixes for Sonarkollektiv and others.

Jeremy P. Caulfield Straight from Toronto, Kanada in die TechHouseund Minimal-Szene: Mit seinem eigenständigen, rauen und kantigen Sound hat Jeremy P. RadioFritz-Moderatorin Anja Schneider spielt in ihrer Sendung Dance under the Blue Moon Wochenende für Wochenende den neuen heißen Dancescheiß rauf und runter, von Deephouse über Datafunk und Technopop bis hin zu Electroknallern, wenn denn nur die Qualität stimmt und das Ganze swingt. Und da macht ihrem scharfen Auswahlinstinkt niemand was vor.

Without her, not only would the airwaves be rather more boring, but the club scene in Eastern Germany would be decidedly duller, quieter and worse off. This lady from Chile, known for her releases on labels such as Traum and Carpark, will be presenting one of her much-discussed live sets at SMS. Depending on the alter ego in effect at the time, the vibes on offer can be dark or poppy.

Oder so ähnlich. Techno, der um die Bedeutung von Detroit und Köln weiß, Pop nicht ignoriert und auch, na also, Dub ausspielt.

If that name doesn’t instantly make you think of dub, reggae and other smoke-heavy sounds, you truly are free of clichés. And absolutely right. Gunjah in fact venture into a minimal version of italo disco.

Ed2000 Von History zu his Story. Corin Arnold aka Ed2000 ist schon so lange als DJ around, dass sich seine persönliche Geschichte untrennbar mit Musikgeschichte verwoben hat. Und das ist in seinen packenden Break-Sets einfach zu spüren. 1989 wurde ihm eine Residency im berühmten Limelight in London angeboten, doch Corin entschied sich für das Abenteuer Berlin, wo er schon zwei Tage nach dem Mauerfall im ersten Ost-Berliner Club hinter den Turntables stand. Sein Label nennt sich Dangerous Drums, seht das als Motto für sein Set! From history to his story. Corin Arnold aka Ed2000 has been around as a DJ for so long that his life story has become an inseparable part of music history. And that comes through in his riveting break sets. In 1989 he was offered a residency in London’s famous Limelight club, but Corin decided instead to head for the adventure that was Berlin,

Als DJs lassen sich die beiden nicht auf Experimente ein. Ihr Sound ist ein Brückenschlag von Detroit nach Birmingham mit nur zwei Abfahrten: Tschechien und die Slowakei. Ginger und Daho sind ein „four-playerpowerset“, das die Scheiben im 20 Sekundentakt wechselt.

Eine Tradition, an der wir gerne festhalten, ist das freitägliche Zelt des GROOVE Magazins. Deutschlands dienstältestes Magazin für elektronische Musik und Clubkultur feiert Ende dieses Jahr seinen 15. und ihr Floor auf SonneMondSterne bietet den idealen Anlass, um schon einmal ausgelassen vorzufeiern.

Mit dabei sind dieses Jahr zwei Live-Acts sowie drei DJs, die sich bereits auf einigen GROOVE-Partys bewährt haben: Newcomer des Jahres und Frauenschwarm N°1 Luciano spielt bei uns eines seiner Live-Sets, die sich immer äußerst filigran zwischen zupackender Basspumpe und fein ziselierten LatinoRhythmen bewegen. Ebenfalls aus Lucianos Heimatland Chile kommt der zweite Live-Act Dinky, die über den Umweg New York inzwischen in Berlin gelandet ist. Ihr Live-Set auf der letzten Berliner GROOVEParty war für nicht wenige Höhepunkt der Nacht, ein 75minütiger Acidtrip, der ihre bisherigen Veröffentlichungen auf Traum oder Carpark nochmals übertroffen hat. Als DJ spielt Somas-best Ewan Pearson, inzwischen ebenfalls Wahl-Berliner. Dass der nicht nur die dicksten (Remix)Beats basteln kann, sondern auch ebenfalls extrem satt auflegen kann, dürfte bekannt sein. Falls nicht: Anhören und überzeugen lassen! Überzeugend kann man auch den Erfolg von GROOVE-Herausgeber DJ T’s Plattenlabel Get Physical bezeichnen: der Laden läuft, jede Katalognummer ist

ein kleiner Hit. Der Hit war übrigens auch das letztjährige SMS-GROOVE-Opening von Freebase-Fachkraft Phase2, der auch dieses Jahr wieder mit am Start ist.

A tradition that we like to hold on to is Friday’s GROOVE Magazine tent. Germany’s longest running electronic music and club culture magazine celebrates its 15th anniversary this year and their floor at this years SMS is an ideal place to celebrate the occasion. Part of the line up are two live acts and three djs who have not only left their mark at recent GROOVE parties. Newcomer of the year and everybody’s darling Luciano will perform one of his live sets that move elegantly between pumping bass lines and tender latin rhythms. Also from Chile is our second live act Dinky. For many her appearance at the most recent GROOVE party in Berlin was one of the highlights of the night – a 75 minutes long acid trip, that managed to top her releases on Traum and Carpark. Soma’s best Ewan Pearson has made a name recently not only as one of the best remixers around but also as a very skilled dj. GROOVE publisher DJ T and his label Get Physical have also left a mark over the last year or so, each catalog numbers being a hit on his own. Another hit – no doubt – was Phase2’s opening at last years SMS-GROOVE tent which he will surely repeat this time around.

In den letzten 2 Jahren hat es sich herumgesprochen, dass SMS kein reines Techno- und Housefestival ist. Drum and Bass und Breaks wurden mehr und mehr integriert und Artists, wie Storm, Grooverider, LTJ Bukem feat. MC Conrad und die gesamte deutsche Drum and Bass-Elite gaben sich die Ehre.

Die Begeisterung für gebrochene Beats steckte selbst Techno- und House-Liebhaber an und gestaltet seitdem das Festival noch abwechselungsreicher. Die BROKEN HARMONY CRU wird in diesem Jahr den Festivalfreitag, mit erlesenem Programm bereichern. Die Cru aus Weimar hat sich in den letzen Jahren hauptsächlich in der Thüringer Szene manifestiert und ist derzeit auf dem Weg überregional mit Sound-, VJ- und Dekorationskünstlern zu überzeugen. Man ist bestrebt nicht nur guten Sound abzuliefern, sondern auch die dazugehörige Kulisse – so spricht man nicht nur von einer Party, mehr ist jede Produktion eine Inszenierung für sich. Sound, Optik und Licht wirken als Einheit und sind auch so zu verstehen. Das Programm lässt keine Wünsche offen und so wurden weder Kosten noch Mühen gescheut, Acts wie D-BRIDGE von BAD COMPANY UK, SHIMON (Ram Records UK) und THE RAGGA TWINS (Rawhill UK) am Mic zu engagieren – let’s rock!

In the last 2 years nearly everybody noticed that the SonneMondSterne festival is not only a Techno or House festival. Drum’n’Bass and Breaks get more and more integrated and artists like Storm, Grooverider, LTJ Bukem feat. MC Conrad and the whole German Drum’n’Bass top acts rocked the floor.

The enthusiasm even catched the Techno and House people. The Broken Harmony Cru is going to create the festival-Friday with a select program.

Am Samstag gehts auf eine basslastige Reise durch die Weiten der Broken Beats Welt: vom Berliner Breakbeattechno-Pionier Tanith, der durch seine Labelarbeit bei z.B. Das Jahr 2003 war ein Rekordsommer und so auch ein Megaansturm auf alle Open Airs die es so gab.

Für die Brandenburg-Allstars Crew war die Second Stage beim SonneMondSterne Festival in Saalburg sicher wie für viele vor dieser Bühne ein unvergessenes Erlebnis. 1000de Partypeople feierten von Freitag bis Sonntag zu den Sounds der Lokalhelden aus Brandenburg und deren Gäste und verwandelten den Platz in eine wahre Staubwüste und den heimlichen Hauptfloor des Festivals. Da liegt es nahe, dass auch im Jahr 2004 diese Crew die kleine Bühne von Freitag bis Sonntag Mittag bespielen darf. Auch in diesem Jahr werden natürlich hochkarätige Gäste aus gesamt Ostdeutschland geladen. Einziger Unterschied die Stilrichtungen werden getauscht (Freitag – House/Electro, Samstag – Techno und zum Sonntag Mittag dann wieder etwas softer). Am Samstag Nachmittag wird es diesmal einen Liveact Contest geben. In der Hoffnung auf annähernd so gutes Wetter wie im letzten Jahr und wieder zahlreiche mitgereiste Feierwütige aus Brandenburg warten wir sehnsüchtig auf das erste Augustwochenende in Thüringen.

The summer of 2003 broke all temperature records and caused once again the run to all kinds of Open Airs. One of them was the famous SonneMondSterne festival. There, the Brandenburg-Allstars Crew managed the SecondStage of the festival. Just as in the past it was an unforgettable experience for all people on and around the stage.

More than 1.000 people partied to the sounds of the local DJs of Brandenburg (a federal state of Eastern Germany) and their guests and turned the place into a hotspot and the secret Mainfloor. No doubt, the Crew will participate in the festival again in 2004 and therefore is going to put on the turntables on the small stage from Friday till Sunday. Besides the illustrious Brandenburg-Allstars DJs there will be famous guest DJs from all over Eastern Germany as well as a Liveact Contest on Saturday. In addition they innovated in changing the music styles: House and Electro will be played on Friday and Techno on Saturday. Everyone hopes that the weather will be as good as last year and that a huge number of Partypeople will come to the Second Open Air Stage. Aber wieso? Am Ufer der Bleilochtalsperre haben wir doch die letzten Jahre wunderbar zusammen gefeiert. Auch in diesem Jahr ist das TPZ mit einem eigenem Floor vertreten. Am Freitag präsentieren wir euch in unserem Zelt groovige House- und Tech-Sounds. Musikalischen Support bekommen wir in diesem Jahr von der Veranstaltercrew der Bienstedter Warte, einem alten Stasi-Gelände, welches sich seit einen Jahr in den Händen des MFS (Ministerium für Soundsicherheit) befindet.

Die House-DJs funky S, Mark van Weth, TAFFCAET und Steven Morgenstern + Live-vocals werden mit House und Elektrosounds den Reigen eröffnen.

Miss Kytah, Christian Fröhlich und Tobias Winkler, sowie unser Live-Act dapayk werden mit ihren Beats die Stimmung bis tief in die frühen Morgenstunden am brodeln halten. Auch diesmal werden wir versuchen, euch mit einer unseren freakigen Dekoideen zu überraschen, um auch den Augen einen Genuss zubereiten, denn die Ohren werden auf keinen Fall zu kurz kommen.

Auch in diesem Jahr präsentiert sich das Veranstaltungsprojekt Unruhige Nächte aus Ilmenau, auf dem größten und wichtigsten Elektronikfestival SonneMondSterne. Als eigenständiges und innovatives Partyprojekt haben sie sich längst in der Thüringer Partylandschaft etabliert und integriert. Nach einer einjährigen Tour-Pause haben sie sich in diesem Jahr wieder dazu entschlossen eine Tour durch die Gefilde der Party-Szene zu starten. Dabei ist es ihr Ziel, den Besuchern der einzelnen Tour-Events ein vielfältiges Spektrum ihrer Musik zu bieten und vor allem neue, innovative Sounds zu fördern. In diesem Rahmen führten sie die zweite erfolgreiche Veranstaltungsreihe Most Wanted DJ durch. Der Sieger dieses Events, wird beim Festival SonneMondSterne 2004 dabei sein. Um die Wirkung von elektronischen Schwingungen auf den Metabolismus konsumgeschädigter Menschen zu untersuchen halten noch folgende Referenten musikalische Beiträge Sir Henry, K/sol, Djane Bux, Squear, Totmacher, Selecta Cantus & Cat, Reiko Seefeld, Floppy live.

Der Referent Bill Youngman aus den USA wird live Experimente durchführen, die unter dem Thema „Frequenzbehandlung zur GroßhirnrindenMassage“ stehen.

Based in Ilmenau, the event project Unruhige Naechte once again decided to include the SonneMondSterne festival within their annual ward round. Unique and innovative, they are one of the most renowned elements of the Thuringian electronica cosmos, and after a one year break they are now ready to hit the party scene once again. Always aiming at an incredibly varied live performance and the creation of fresh and innovative soundscapes, they also started their Most Wanted DJ–contest. The winner of this ambitious project will participate in their SMS – performance 2004. On their quest to examine the effects of sonic vibrations on the metabolism of homo consumptionens, the following artists will contribute their musical competence: Sir Henry, K/sol , Djane Bux, Squear, Totmacher, Selecta Cantus & Cat, Reiko Seefeld and Floppy. Finally, American consultant Bill Youngman announced several live experiments regarding a new scientific approach: “Frequency therapy and stimulation of the cerebral cortex”.

Mit der Beck’s on Stage - Music Competition startet Beck’s einen bundesweiten Aufruf an alle, die Lust an musikalischen Experimenten haben. Beck’s on Stage ist auf der Suche nach Musikprofis, Hobbyund Nachwuchsmusikern. Der von Beck’s ausgeschriebene Wettbewerb bietet Musikern die einmalige Chance, mit ihren eigenen Kompositionen live auf einem der deutschen Top Festivals im Sommer 2004 aufzutreten. Aufgabe für alle Teilnehmer ist es, den Beck’s Song Sail away neu zu interpretieren.

Coverversionen und Remixe jeglicher musikalischer Couleur sind willkommen – von Elektro, Rock, Pop über HipHop, Reggae bis zu House und R’n’B. Einsendeschluss ist der 18. Juni 2004. In der hochkarätigen Jury sitzen unter anderem Michi Beck von den Fantastischen Vier, die Sängerin und Schauspielerin Jana Pallaske und Marcus Adam, Head of Talent and Music bei MTV Deutschland. Die Gewinner werden auf einem Festival je nach eingereichtem Genre auftreten. Der Gewinn umfasst die komplette Organisation des Auftrittes inklusive An- und Abreise und die Betreuung vor Ort. On top gibt es Music Software Pakete und Gitarren für die besten Einsender zu gewinnen.

From April 5th Beck’s is inviting bands, DJs and producers to take part in the Beck’s On Stage - Music Competition. Everybody interested in musical experiments, such as upcoming musicans, professionals or amateurs can participate. Requirements are to produce a remix or cover version of the Beck´s song Sail Away. Every type of musical genre is welcome: from electronic, hip hop over rock and pop to reggae or house. The deadline is june 18th. The best participants will be awarded with attactive prizes: five live on stage gigs at top German festivals, where bands and DJs can perform their own compositions. Besides music software packages and guitars will be given away to other successfull participants. A top class jury from the music business will judge the songs.

Members of the jury are Michi Beck, part of the Fantastischen Vier, singer and actor Jana Pallaske and Marcus Adam, head of talent and music with MTV Germany. The competition is an ideal chance for newcomers to further develop their musical direction. The following is a list of the festivals where the winners of the competition will perform.

Waarom SonneMondSterne? Het werd verkozen tot het beste (dance) festival van 2003. Er moet dus iets zijn dat het festival zo popu-lair maakt. Zou het de locatie zijn; een schitterend stuwmeer tussen de bergen? Is het de spetterende line-up met oa. de Chemical Brothers, Lamb, T.Raumschmiere met band en Villalobos? Of is het die ongekende gezellige Duitse sfeer die je niet kan vertalen in woorden? Wie zal het zeggen? Natuurlijk zal een keur aan artiesten’s nachts de verschillende podia/tenten betreden, maar overdag zullen ze wederom aantreden. Dan op het 2e SMS voetbaltoernooi, waar dj’s, organisatoren, boekings agenten, journalisten en bezoekers het tegen elkaar opnemen in een beach-like voetbaltoernooi.

En als dat nog niet genoeg is, kan je altijd nog heerlijk chillen en evt BBQ-en op de camping. Hoe dan ook SMS word wederom geweldig!

HOW TO FIND: Saalburg liegt in Thüringen, nahe der bayer­ischen Landesgrenze unmittelbar an der A9 (das ist die von München nach Berlin und um­gekehrt).

Automobilisten, die aus Richtung Süden kommen, benutzen die Abfahrt Loben­s tein, jene aus dem Norden verlassen in Schleiz die Autobahn. Von den Autobahnausfahrten einfach Richtung Saalburg fahren (ist jeweils augeschildert). In Saalburg folgt ihr entweder dem Sound oder aber unseren liebevoll selbst gemalten Schildern zum Festivalgelände. Wir wünschen wie immer eine sehr entspan­nte Anreise und sehen uns in Saalburg.

Saalburg is located in the south of Thuringia and we suggest travelling on motorway A9, which connects Berlin and Munich. If you visit us from the south (direction Munich to Berlin), please use exit “Lobenstein”; those coming from northern regions (Berlin to Munich) might exit the motorway in “Schleiz”. Following the signs, it should be easy to arrive at Saalburg. Now it’s up to you: Let the music guide you or simply watch out for our carefully hand-painted hints to reach destination SMS.
