Fünfzehn Jahre sind zwar nur ein halbrunder Geburtstag, für ein Festival aber schon ein recht erwachsenes Alter. Und wie das mit runden (oder halbrunden) Geburtstagen so ist, hebt man das Glas und wirft einen Blick in den Rückspiegel der Geschichte. Gern gespickt mit Sprüchen wie „Wisst ihr noch … ?“ und „Ja, damals …“ wird getoastet und geprostet. Auch wir erinnern uns gern an die Anfangsjahre, an Geschichten und Anekdoten, die uns heute noch erheitern und Dinge, die uns auch jetzt noch die Hände über dem Kopf zusammenschlagen lassen, gefolgt von einem herzlichen „Oh mein Gott, wie konnten wir nur …?!“. Viel wichtiger als all diese kleinen und großen Ereignisse ist jedoch das Ganze, das sich im Laufe von fünfzehn Jahren daraus entwickelt hat, die Atmosphäre, die trotz des Wachstums erhalten geblieben ist und das Miteinander vor, auf und hinter den Bühnen. Wir erinnern uns an die letztjährige Ausgabe, bei der trotz feucht-mieser Wetterbedingungen oder gerade deshalb alle alles gegeben haben und das SMS 2010 zu einem der schönsten Festivals der letzten Jahre gemacht haben, auch wenn davon die Optik halbwegs ausgenommen war. Vor allem aber war es eure unerschütterliche Feierlaune, die der großartigste Zusatzlohn für unsere an der Lastgrenze laufende Crew war. Though a fifteen-year anniversary does not generally constitute much of a milestone, it’s certainly a ripe old age for a music festival. And, whatever type of milestone it’s set to represent, music fans everywhere raise their glasses to this festival, reﬂecting on the great memories of past events and toasting to them with frequent mutterings of “do you remember that time …?” often met with replies of “yeah, back then ...” and “oh, those were the days!”. We look back fondly on the early years, on the stories and anecdotes that still amaze us today or would make us throw our hands up in sheer disbelief uttering wholehearted cries of “oh my goodness, did we really do that?!”. Nevertheless, what’s much more important than all of these things, big or small, is the thing as a whole, which has developed out of the course of the past fifteen years, as well as the special atmosphere that, despite the festival’s growth, has always remained the same and, of course, the smooth cooperation between the front-stage, the back-stage and on stage. Let’s not forget the previous year’s edition either, where faced with appalling damp weather conditions everyone gave their upmost to make SMS 2010 one of the most fantastic festivals of many a recent year, even when the optics went out half-way through. Above all, it was your unwavering and unshakable festival spirit that was the formidable added bonus for our almost completely exhausted crew. Das britische Duo Tom Rowlands und Ed Simons alias The Chemical Brothers gehört zu den Acts, die sowohl im Mainstream als auch in der Elektro-Szene gleichermaßen verehrt werden. Ihre bislang sieben Alben haben die moderne Tanzmusik revolutioniert, und auch ihre Live-Auftritte gelten als legendär. Sie gehörten neben Fatboy Slim und The Prodigy in den mittleren bis späten 90er-Jahren zu den Pionieren des Big Beat und sind seitdem aus TV und Radio und von den großen Mainstages der Sommerfestivals nicht mehr wegzudenken. In ihren Musikvideos, nicht selten spektakulären und preisgekrönten Meisterwerken, verfolgen die Chemical Brothers eine ganz eigene visuelle Ästhetik. Der internationale Durchbruch gelang dem Duo 1997 mit ihrer Single „Block Rockin’ Beats“ vom zweiten Album „Dig Your Own Hole“. Weitere Hits und Kollaborationen mit Größen wie Oasis, New Order oder Bloc Party manifestierten den Status der Chemical Brothers als Teil der obersten Riege des britischen Pop. Ihr außerordentliches musikalisches Talent bewiesen sie endgültig mit ihrem 2005er-Hit „Galvanize“ vom Album „Push The Button“ zusammen mit dem A Tribe Called QuestRapper Q-Tip. Album und Single gewannen 2006 den Grammy, 2008 folgte ein weiterer Award für den Longplayer „We Are The Night“. Durch ihre Mischung aus Samples, Beats, Indie, Electro-Sounds und HipHop haben die Chemical Brothers von alten Big Beat-Pfründen ausgehend mittlerweile ein ganz eigenes Klangbild erschaffen. Auf die fulminante Live-Performance beim SonneMondSterne, die sicher wieder mit einer opulenten Lasershow und vielen neuen Ideen kombiniert sein wird, darf man sich jetzt schon freuen.

Their to-date seven albums have revolutionised modern Dance and their live performances are acknowledged by many to be truly legendary. Alongside artists Fatboy Slim and The Prodigy they make up the pioneers of the ‘Big Beat’ movement of the mid to late 1990s. Ever since then, the group hasn’t been out of the limelight, neither on TV nor the radio, dominating the main stages of the festivals. In the often spectacular and prize-winning masterpieces of their music videos, they subscribe to a quite unique visual aesthetic. The duo’s international breakthrough arrived in 1997 with their hit single ‘Block Rockin’ Beats’ from their second album ‘Dig Your Own Hole’. Further hits and collaborations with music greats such as New Order, Oasis and Bloc Party established and reinforced the status of The Chemical Brothers as at home in the very highest echelons of British Pop. Their extraordinary musical talents finally came to the fore with their 2005 hit track ‘Galvanize’ from the album ‘Push the Button’ together with the ‘A Tribe Called Quest’-rapper, Q-Tip. Both the album and single collected the 2006 Grammy awards, followed later in 2008 by an award for the LP ‘We Are the Night’. Through their mixing of Samples, Beats, Indie, Electro-Sounds and Hip-Hop, The Chemical Brothers, in the meantime, have created a quite distinctive sound pattern of their own stemming from its old Big Beat origins. You cannot help but get excited by their upcoming and spectacular live performance at the SonneMondSterne Festival, which again looks set to combine an opulent laser-show with many interesting new concepts.

It is fitting that Richard Melville Hall got the inspiration for his artist name from the title of the classic novel ‘Moby Dick’. After all, this literary masterpiece stemmed from the pen of his great great-uncle, while today his own musical masterpieces enjoy a similarly legendary status. Moby started playing music from as early as his teenage years, primarily in those days with a guitar close at hand and in hardcore bands. With his move to New York he came into contact with electronic music and became a DJ. In 1990 Moby’s fi rst single ‘Time’s Up’ made its fi rst appearance and a good ten years later he made his international breakthrough with his fifth album ‘Play’ and the hit single ‘Why Does my Heart Feel So Bad?’. The song transformed Moby into a popstar – one who nevertheless stayed true to his hardcore roots, whilst continuing indefatigably to remain politically engaged. He took part in the ‘Songs for Tibet’ campaign in the production of an album, of which the proceeds went directly to the cause of the freedom movement for Tibet. Later, Moby went on to be actively engaged in a campaign against domestic violence. It amazes pretty much everyone that alongside all his political work and activities he still managed to fi nd the time to keep producing and releasing music on such a regular basis. In May he released what was now his tenth album with ‘Destroyed’, from which he gave away the EP ‘Be the One’ as a free download. In 2011 Moby again acted as one of the trendsetters in the already fast-paced Dance genre. Indeed, Moby is set to show everyone once again at the SonneMondSterne Festival that his very often energetic live performances contain a truly unique and at times bombastic character.

Passend, dass sich Richard Melville Hall für seinen Künstlernamen von dem Titel des Roman-Klassikers „Moby Dick“ hat inspirieren lassen. Schließlich stammt das Werk aus der Feder seines Ur-Ur-Großonkels, und sein musikalisches Werk ist mittlerweile ähnlich legendär. Der Song machte Moby zum Popstar, der aber seinen Hardcore-Wurzeln treu blieb und sich unermüdlich politisch engagierte. Er beteiligte sich an den „Songs For Tibet“, einem Album, dessen Einnahmen der Freiheitsbewegung Tibets zugute kamen, später arbeitete er in einer Kampagne gegen häusliche Gewalt. Dass er neben seiner politischen Arbeit noch die Zeit ﬁ ndet, regelmäßig Musik zu veröffentlichen, verwundert da beinahe. Im Mai veröffentlichte er sein nun schon zehntes Album mit dem Titel „Destroyed“, vorab verschenkte er die EP „Be The One“ als kostenlosen Download. Auch 2011 zeigt Moby sich damit musikalisch auf der Höhe der Zeit im sonst schon so schnelllebigen Dance-Genre. Dass seine Live-Auftritte ebenfalls einen ganz eigenen, gerne mal bombastischen Charakter besitzen und immer noch für viele energetische Momente gut sind, wird Moby auf dem SonneMondSterne wieder einmal allen beweisen.

SWeDiSh hoUSe maFia Wenn es ein DJ-Kollektiv gibt, das derzeit wie ein Rockstar gefeiert wird, dann ist es die Swedish House Mafia. Für sie ging es binnen weniger als zwei Jahren von Null auf Hundert. Der Aufstieg des Trios Axwell, Steve Angello und Sebastian Ingrosso – anfangs war der mittlerweile zum Chartstürmer mutierte Eric Prydz noch mit von der Partie – zu einem Electro-Act der Superlative gleicht amerikanischen Heldenmärchen. Aus den internationalen GroßraumDiskotheken sind die drei nicht mehr wegzudenken, Hallen und gar Stadien füllt die Swedish House Mafia problemlos. Startschuss für den überragenden Erfolg war ihr Debütalbum „Until One“, das Hits wie „Miami 2 Ibiza“, eine Zusammenarbeit mit Tinie Tempah, und „One (Your Name)“ feat. Pharrell besaß. Schlagartig war die Swedish House Mafia in den oberen Rängen der Charts. Ende 2010 veröffentlichten die Schweden den Dokumentarfilm „Take One“, der ihre Reise durch 15 Länder mit 253 Gigs erzählt. Die britische Times beschrieb den Film als „Spinal Tap For The Acid House Generation“ Die drei Produzenten und DJs waren, bevor sie mit der Swedish House Mafia durch die Decke gingen, schon eigenständig erfolgreich. Jeder von ihnen ist Label-Besitzer und kann auch solo auf zahlreiche Hits und Remixe für etablierten Künstler zurückblicken. Axel Hedfors aka Axwell hat auf seinem Label Size Records ein Soloalbum mit dem Titel „The Yearbook“ veröffentlicht, Sebastian Ingrosso war zuletzt mit der Produktion von Kylie Minogues neuem Album beschäftigt. Auf der Bühne scheut die Band wie auch im Studio weder Kosten noch Mühen. Die Swedish House Mafia wummert und kracht!

If you ever come across a DJ collective that are today celebrated and adored like mega rockstars, then it’s got to be the Swedish House Mafia, for whom things really took off within in the space of less than two years. The rise of the trio Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso – and initially Eric Prydz, who has meanwhile become a chart topper, was also part of the set – to an Electro act right to the top matches the stuff of American fairy-tales. Out of international main stage discos, the Swedish House Mafia has become a mainstay, filling out arenas and even stadiums with constant ease. Their overwhelming success started all the way back with their debut album ‘Until One’, that contained such hits as ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’, a co-production with Tinie Tempah, and ‘One (Your Name)’ feat. Pharell. And with that The Swedish House Mafia shot right to the top of the charts. Towards the end of 2010 the Swedes released their documentary film ‘Take One’, which tells of their journey across 15 countries, taking in 253 gigs along the way. The London Times described the film as ‘Spinal Tap for the Acid-House generation’. The three producers and DJs, before adopting the guise of Swedish House Mafia, had already had success on their own. Each of the members owns his own label and as solo producers they already have an impressive backlog of numerous hits and remixes for many artists. Axel Hedfors, aka Axwell, released a solo album ‘The Yearbook’ from his own label Size Records, while Sebastian Ingrosso had recently been busy with the production of Kylie Minogue’s latest album. On stage as well as in the studio, the band spares neither expense nor eff ort. After all, The Swedish House Mafia knows how crash and bang!

Keine Frage – Clueso hat es geschaff t. Spätestens mit seinem Album „Weit weg“ von 2006 ist ihm der endgültige Durchbruch gelungen, er spielt zusammen mit seiner Band, die im Kern seinem Freundeskreis gleichkommt, lange Tourneen durch große Konzerthallen und ﬁ ndet seine Alben und Singles hoch oben in den Charts wieder. Und ganz nebenbei hat er sich im heimischen Erfurt eine Struktur und ein Umfeld geschaffen, dass ihn ein gutes Stück weit unabhängig von den Unwägbarkeiten des Geschäfts macht. Wenn sich so ein Künstler einer treuen Anhängerschaft sicher sein kann, kann er durchaus ein Gefühl von Freiheit und den Mut entwickeln, sich in fremden Geﬁlden auszuprobieren. Auch auf die Gefahr hin, den einen oder anderen Fan zu verunsichern. Nichts anderes versucht Clueso mit seinem Projekt Disco-Stress.

Zusammen mit seinem alten Kompagnon, dem Filme macher Baris Aladag, führt der Erfurter seine Songs in die Zusammenhänge von Disco, Electro und Soul. Man darf gespannt sein, wie dieses furiose Experiment auf dem SonneMondSterne gelingt. Denn auch wenn die Songs des neuen CluesoAlbums „An und für sich“ deutlich elektronischer und grooviger als die früheren Platten ausgefallen sind, geriet er nie in den Verdacht, wirklich zuvorderst den Dancefl oor im Blick zu haben. Pop-Acts, die gerne mal ihre elektronische Seite herauskehren und den Party-DJ geben, gibt es viele. Musiker, die den riskanten Weg gehen und ihre eigenen Songs vollkommen transformieren, dagegen nur ganz wenige. Genau das kündigen Clueso und Aladag als Disco-Stress an. Und egal, wie das Ergebnis ausfällt – dieser Gig wird für Aufsehen sorgen.

ClUeSo and DiSCo -StreSS There can be no question about it – Clueso has arrived. As recent as with his 2006 album ‘Weit Weg’ (‘Far Away’) he fi nally made his breakthrough, playing together with his band, at the heart of which was a close group of friends, lengthy tours across huge concert halls and albums and singles that again and again reached the very top of the charts. And alongside all of that in his hometown of Erfurt he fabricated a structure and surroundings that would move him a big step towards independency and away from the unpredictable nature of business. When an artist can be assured of such a loyal and devoted fan-base, then it gives him the ability to display a sense of freedom and endeavour that can be tried and tested out in other domains, even when this may run the risk of unsettling one or two fans along the way. And this is exactly what Clueso is attempting to do with his project Disco-Stress. Together with his old companion, the

film-maker Baris Aladag, the Erfurt artist brings his songs into connection with Disco, Electro and Soul. It’s more than enough to get excited about with how this frenetic and passionate experiment will come to life at the SonneMondSterne Festival. Even when songs from the new Clueso album ‘An und für sich’ (‘In itself and for itself’) have a clearly more electronic and groovy sound than his earlier records, there’s never the suspicion that he’s primarily got an eye on the dance-ﬂoor with his music. There’s an abundance of pop-acts who will gladly turn their back on their electronic side on their way to becoming the ultimate party-DJ. Musicians who take the riskier path of taking their own songs and completely transforming them are comparatively fewer and far between. Yet that is exactly what Clueso and Aladag have heralded with Disco-Stress and, no matter how it may ultimately turn out, these performances will undoubtedly cause quite a stir.

„Noch fünf Minuten, Mutti“ nörgelten die Deichkinder im Jahr 2002. Das zweite Album der Band kam damals einem Quantensprung gleich. Vor allem mit der Single „Limit“ entfernten sich die vier Jungs endgültig vom klassischen HipHop früherer Jahre, indem sie ihre Raps mit einem fetten Electro-Beat unterlegten. Die volle Kraft der Bassdrum entfaltete sich schließlich auf dem 2006 veröffentlichten Album „Aufstand im Schlaraffenland“ und dem darauf enthaltenen Überhit „Remmidemmi (Yippie Yippie Yeah)“. Diese Mischung aus grotesken Texten und wahnsinnigen Techno-Grooves gab es so bis dato noch nicht, Deichkinds Stil wurde von Kritikern und nicht zuletzt der Band selbst als Tech-Rap neu deﬁ niert. Die schrägen Bühnenshows der Hamburger sorgen bundesweit für Aufsehen: Müllsäcke, Neonfarbene

Knicklichter und jede Menge Schnaps verwandeln die Konzerte zu anarchistischen Partys, die keine Hemmungen zu kennen scheinen. Legendär der Einsatz der Zitze, einem überdimensionalen Brustnachbau, der die ersten Reihen mit hochprozentigen Erfrischungsgetränken versorgt. Auch Hüpfburgen, Möbel und diverse futuristische Gimmicks kommen bei den Shows zum Einsatz und überleben die Exzesse nur selten. Nach seinem Ausstieg im Jahr 2008 gab Buddy Infl agranti sein Mikro weiter an Ferris MC aka Ferris Hilton, der auch auf dem aktuellen Album „Arbeit nervt“ zu hören ist. Nach ausufernden Tourneen und dem tragischen Tod von Produzent Sebi machte sich die Band in letzter Zeit rar. Deichkind lassen es sich jedoch nicht nehmen, ihr einziges Konzert in Deutschland 2011 auf dem SMS zu zelebrieren.

“Another five minutes, mum,” pleaded the Deichkinder in 2002. The group’s second album equated at the time to a quantum-leap of sorts. Most notably with the single ‘Limit’, the four guys fi nally distanced themselves from the classic Hip-Hop of yesteryear by subverting their raps with a fat Electro beat. The full power of the bass drum was ultimately given its expression in their album ‘Aufstand im Schlaraff enland’ (‘The Uprising in Schlaraff enland’) released in 2006 and in the super-hit ‘Remmidemmi (Yippie Yippie Yeah)’ taken from the same album. Until that point, this mixture of grotesque lyrical texts and crazy Techno grooves had not been heard before; Deichkind’s style was to be newly defi ned by both critics and the band themselves alike as ‘Tech-Rap’. The slanted-stage shows by the Hamburg outfit were to cause a real stir across the country: bin-bags, neon

glow sticks and a whole heap of schnapps transformed the concerts into anarchistic parties completely devoid of inhibitions. Most legendary is the entrance of a teat or so-called “Zitze” onto the stage – a colossal reproduction of a breast that sprays the front rows with refreshment drinks! Bouncy castles, bits of furniture and various futuristic gimmicks are thrown into the mix of the shows and hardly any of the excesses survive! Following his exit in 2008 Buddy Inﬂagranti passed on the microphone to Ferris MC aka Ferris Hilton, with whom their current album ‘Arbeit nervt’ (‘Work bugs me’) is also defi nitely worth a listen. After an overwhelming number of tours and the tragic passing of the producer Sebi, the band went off the radar somewhat, but you can be assured that Deichkind won’t hold back in celebrating their only concert in Germany in 2011 at the SMS Festival.

mr. oizo Es scheint, als wäre es erst gestern gewesen. Dabei lief die kleine gelbe Stoff puppe namens Flat Eric schon 1999 über die Bildschirme der Welt. Seit diesem Zeitpunkt ist Mr. Oizo, mit bürgerlichem Namen Quentin Dupieux, eine Marke in den Bereichen elektronischer Musik und Filmkunst. Das lag nicht nur an dem Erfolg des Werbespots, der einem Jeanshersteller eine ordentliche Umsatzsteigerung bescherte: Flat Eric wurde über Nacht zur Kultfigur, und Mr. Oizo gleich mit. Der Song „Flat Beat“ stürmte europaweit die Charts. Das folgende Album „Analog Worms Attack“ konnte die Euphorie zwar noch aufrechterhalten, Flat Eric war letztlich aber nur ein kurzlebiges Phänomen. Kennt man Dupieux’ künstlerischen Duktus, ist das nur logisch: Anstatt sich krampfhaft an einer erfolgreichen Schiene festzuhalten, zieht er lieber weiter, hin zu neuen Herausforderungen, musikalischer wie filmischer Art. 2005 erschien sein zweites Album „Moustache (Half A Scissor)“, ein Ausdruck seiner musikalischen Vielseitigkeit. In der Zeit danach war Dupieux als Remixer für u.a. Air und die Scissor Sisters tätig, er drehte aber auch den Film „Steak“ zusammen mit dem französischen Komödianten-Duo Éric & Ramzy. Anschließend blieb Dupieux bei seinem filmischen Schaffen und stellte bei den Filmfestspielen von Cannes den Film „Rubber“ vor. Die Geschichte dreht sich um einen Autoreifen, der seine verbrannte „Familie“ rächt und Menschen tötet. Der Soundtrack zum Film ist wieder von Dupieux’ musikalischer Ambition geprägt, er spielte ihn zusammen mit Gaspard Augé von Justice ein. Mr. Oizo ist ein wunderbarer Querkopf des Musikbusiness, der in seinen Live-Shows brachial-mitreißende Bretter aus technoiden Beats stampft. Dass die visuellen Elemente seiner Show nicht minder sehenswert sind, muss man angesichts seines filmischen Hintergrunds nicht betonen.

It seems like only yesterday that the small yellow stuff ed puppet by the name of Flat Eric was appearing across television screens worldwide back in 1999. Since then Mr. Oizo, whose real name is Quentin Dupieux, has become a trademark in the fields of electronic music and film art. This wasn’t due just to the success of the advert, which made a tidy profit for a jeans manufacturer: Flat Eric became an overnight cult sensation, as too did Mr. Oizo. The song ‘Flat Beat’ stormed the charts all over Europe. The subsequent album ‘Analog Worms Attack’ was somehow able to sustain the initial euphoria. After all, Flat Eric was only supposed to be a short-lived phenomenon. For anyone who knows Dupieux’s artistic style, it represented a merely logical step: Instead of fighting hard to hold onto the success of a track, he would much rather move along onto new challenges, whether it’s to do with musical art or film art. The year 2005 marked the appearance of his second album ‘Moustache (Half a Scissor)’, an expression of his musical diversity. In the period after, Dupieux performed as a remixer for Air and Scissor Sisters, among others, while he also shot the film ‘Steak’ together with the French comedy duo of Éric & Ramzy. Subsequently, Dupieux remained devoted to his film creations and presented the film ‘Rubber’ at the Cannes Film Festival. The story concerns a car-tyre that smells of its burned ‘family’ and kills people. The soundtrack to the film is again stamped with the mark of Dupieux’s musical ambition. He brings in the soundtrack together with Gaspard Augé from ‘Justice’. Mr. Oizo is a wonderful maverick of the music business, stomping to technoid beats from the brute and pulsating sets of his live shows. Up until now, their German fans haven’t had much of a chance to enjoy the thrills of a live show by the Bloody Beetroots. In spite of that, the Italian Electro duo has developed in recent years into one of the hottest acts of the ‘New Rave’ genre. They celebrated their fi rst success in 2008 with the EP ‘Cornelius’ – a track which made its way into the top 100 of the international iTunes charts. Their song ‘Butter’ was notably part of the soundtrack to the popular video game ‘FIFA 09’ and countless remixes with, among others, The Chemical Brothers and Étienne de Crécy established their promising reputation as artistic producers. The Bloody Beetroots are, however, at their very best on the live stage, performing as masked guys in good old punk fashion to deliver the most spectacular of Hardcore-Dance shows.

Aus seinem „schranzigen“, dreckigen Sound wurde eine Jugendbewegung mit Hardcore-Techno, Schlaghosen und Plateauschuhen. Liebing selbst legt bei seinen DJ-Sets und Radioshows Tech-House und Minimal auf, festlegen will er sich dabei jedoch nicht. 1996 gründete Liebing sein Label Fine Audio Recordings, auf dem sein Debütalbum „Early Works“ erschien. Heute ist er Betreiber von einer ganzen Reihe weiterer Labels wie CLR, CLAU und Stigmata. Bei den Dance Awards 2003 gewann Liebing den „Deutschen Dance Award“ in der Kategorie „Bester nationaler DJ“. Die damalige Nominierungsliste sagt einiges über das Ansehen Liebings aus: Paul van Dyk, Sven Väth, Westbam und DJ Koze. How he ever came to the Techno sound of ‘Schranz’, even the man himself, Christoph Liebing, isn’t entirely sure. At the time he merely wanted to produce as ‘dirty’ a sound as possible to mirror that of his English and American counterparts. Out of this dirty, ‘Schranz’-type sound emerged a youth movement with Hardcore-Techno music, ﬂares and platform shoes. For his own part, Liebing laid down Tech-House and Minimal beats in his DJ sets and radio shows, while, at the same time, he refused to be assigned to any particular genre. In 1996 Liebing formed his label Fine Audio Recordings, from which appeared his debut album ‘Early Works’. Today he is the operator of a whole range of labels like CLR, CLAU and Stigmata. At the 2003 Dance Awards Liebing picked up the ‘German Dance Award’ in the category for ‘Best National DJ’, which spoke volumes of Leibing’s talents and success from a list of nominees composed of such greats as Paul van Dyk, Sven Väth, Westbam and DJ Koze.

Hin und wieder vergisst er während seines DJ-Sets sogar mal seine housigen Wurzeln. Dann werden die auf Rhythmen reduzierten Tracks zu harschen Funk-Nummern, und sogar seine Stimme kommt zum Einsatz. 2001 wählen die GrooveLeser DJ Rush zum besten internationalen DJ, die Pole-Position, die in den Jahren zuvor stets Jeff Mills innehatte. Noch heute steht DJ Rush wie kaum ein anderer für Wummer-Techno und „Hard Energy“, wie er seinen Stil selbst bezeichnet. Chicago is commonly held to be the birthplace of House music. The Windy City is also the hometown of DJ Rush, who has become a legend in the Techno world in next to no time at all. He played sets behind the record turntables at the legendary club Warehouse and released his own productions with the Frankfurt Label Force Inc. Today, DJ Rush is at home everywhere. Now and again, he even dispenses with his House music roots during his DJ sets and reduces the rhythm of the tracks to harsh Funk numbers, sometimes bringing his own voice into play. In 2001 Groove readers voted DJ Rush as the best international DJ, the ‘Pole Position’ award that in previous years had been held by Jeff Mills. Even today, DJ Rush stands for Wummer-Techno and ‘Hard Energy’ like few others, matching his self-defi ned musical style.

Unlängst wurde „Ricardo“, wie ihn seine Fans gerne kumpelhaft nennen, ein ﬁlmisches Denkmal gesetzt, das sich dem Phänomen auf dokumentarische Art und Weise nähert. In seinen ausdauernden DJ-Sets lässt Villalobos scheinbar mühelos minimalen Techno und die perkussiven Klänge seiner südamerikanischen Heimat ineinander fließen und kreiert so einzigartige Spannungsbögen. When it comes to extended after-hours and daring sound experiments, there are few other DJs that match the exceptional talent of this Chilean artist. With Ricardo Villalobos the dance-crazy of this world can enjoy getting down to the most insane of beats, which has earned him the reputation as the monolith of the Berlin Techno scene – something that doesn’t bother him in the slightest. ‘Ricardo’, as he’s aff ectionately known by his fans, has recently been the subject of a film dedication, which brings the phenomenon closer to the documentary side of the artistic world. In his extensive DJ sets Villalobos seems to make Minimal Techno beats and the percussion sounds of his South American homeland ﬂow into each other eff ortlessly, creating in turn such unique suspense in the music.

Die französische Produzentin und DJ ist eine Trademark in der Techno-Szene. Ihre gemeinsamen Arbeiten mit Michel Amato aka The Hacker haben das Genre maßgeblich beeinfl usst. When Miss Kittin waves the ‘Modeselektor’ ﬂag on the Sónar Festival stage and sings “Let’s go to the rendez-vous/Of the past, me and you/DJ plays déjàvu/As we were in ’82”, then it becomes more than just a dull party, namely it turns into an expression of the highest elegance: Miss Kittin loves and lives Techno with such devotion. The French producer and DJ is a trademark of the Techno scene, whose coproductions with Michel Amato, aka The Hacker, have had a massive inﬂuence on the genre. It’s only logic that her records were released with International Deejay Gigolos – the same label of the huge glamour boy DJ Hell. Her vocals, marked by a mesmerising French accent, exude a suggestive mix of sex-appeal and blandness. Her DJing combines an unparalleled type of Minimal Techno with ’80s Pop – a mélange that has kept her at the top for over ten years.

Mit Tracks wie „Freak“, „Let’s Play“ oder „Ponyboy“ manifestierten sie ihren ganz eigenen Stil, der landläuﬁg als Technolectro bezeichnet wird. Auch hier erﬁ ndet sich die gewiefte Geschäftsfrau immer wieder neu, egal ob sie mit der ehemaligen Laub-Sängerin Antye Greie-Fuchs oder Sascha Ring im Studio sitzt. Wenn man wie Ellen Allien schon über zwanzig Jahre hinter den Plattenspielern steht und in legendären Clubs wie dem EWerk oder Tresor gespielt hat, weiß man natürlich, wie Szene und Partyvolk ticken. Und diese Erfahrung setzt sie immer ein, sobald sie eine DJ-Kanzel betritt. Heralded as the Grand Lady of the Berlin Techno scene, she’s been in the music business for the past 20 years and, as always, she’s constantly on the go. Through her label BPitch Control, she has contributed considerably to the distinctive sound of her city, whilst promoting special guest acts like Paul Kalkbrenner, Modeselektor and Apparat. In addition, she’s busy running her own fashion label and producing music, too. It is here that this experienced business woman reinvents herself time and again, regardless of whether she’s in the studio with the former Laub singer Antye Greie-Fuchs or with Sascha Ring. When you’ve been behind the decks for more than the twenty years and you’ve played in the most legendary clubs like the E-Werk or Tresor, like Ellen Allien has, you’ll know what makes the music scene and party crowd tick. And she’ll forever carry on applying this know-how for as long as she’s on a DJ platform.

Der Legende nach gründete sich das belgische Duo eines Nachts im Jahr 2004: Jimmy Dewit begeisterte gerade die tanzwütige Menge mit seinen DJ-Qualitäten, als Luuk Cox ihm ein Tape zusteckt, das er in sein Set einbauen soll. Dewit lässt sich nicht lange bitten, die Zusammenarbeit funktioniert überraschend gut – geboren ist Shameboy. Die erste Single „Rechoque“ hält sich wochenlang in den flämischen DanceCharts, fortan verzichten renommierte DJs wie Erol Alkan nur ungern auf Shameboy-Tracks in ihren Sets. Vier Alben und sieben Jahre später sind sie selbst etablierte Szenegrößen – vollkommen zu Recht. As legend would have it, the Belgian duo formed one night back in 2004: Jimmy Dewit was electrifying a dance-happy crowd with his DJing skills, as Luuk Cox passed him a tape that he just had to work into his set somewhere. Dewit didn’t need asking twice and the pair worked remarkably well together – Shameboy was born. The first single ‘Rechoque’ hit the Flemish dance charts and stayed there for weeks on end, from which point onwards renowned DJs, like Erol Alkan, were begrudged to leave Shameboy tracks out of their sets. Four albums and seven years later they are today established leaders of the scene – and quite rightly so.

Spätestens mit seiner Bastard-Pop-Version von Kylie Minogues „Can’t Get You Out Of My Head“, hat sich Erol Alkan den Status eines Rockstars in der ElektroSzene gesichert. Der Londoner DJ legte den New Order-Klassiker „Blue Monday“ unter Minogues Gesang und schuf so einen neuen Hit. Nicht nur durch seinen erfolgreichen eigenen Club Trash und DJ-Sets vor der Londoner High Society gilt Alkan als einer der renommiertesten DJs Englands. Er produzierte in der Vergangenheit auch Indie-Bands wie Late Of The Pier und The Long Blondes und betreibt das Label Phantasie Sound. As recently as his bastard pop version of Kylie Minogue’s ‘Can’t Get You out of My Head’, Eril Alkan reaffirmed his status as one of the true rockstars of the Electro scene. The London-based DJ subverted Minogue’s vocals with the classic New Order track ‘Blue Monday’ to create a new hit. Alkan is regarded as one of the most renowned DJs in England thanks in part to his own successful club Trash and his DJ sets at the London High Society. This is also in part due to his past successes in producing Indie bands like Late Of The Pier and The Long Blondes and his current operation of the label Phantasie Sound.

Das Elektro-Trash-Punk-Kollektiv ist international im allerbesten Sinne: Acht Musiker aus acht verschiedenen Nationen fanden sich zunächst in Barcelona, später dann in Berlin zusammen. Mittlerweile hat die Staatsakt-Truppe unzählige Anhänger, nicht nur dank ihrer zwei Alben voller Hedonismus-Hymnen à la „Too Much“, sondern vor allem durch ihre LiveGigs: Hier darf man sich auf skurrile Kostümierungen, exzentrische Tanzeinlagen, spärlich bekleidete Burlesque-Tänzerinnen und eine rundum spektakuläre Bühnenshow freuen. „Do you wanna party with Bonaparte?“ Die Antwort kann nur „JA!“ lauten. The Electro-Trash-Punk group are international in all senses of the word: Eight musicians from eight different countries found themselves together initially in Barcelona and then again later in Berlin. Meanwhile the state-act group has attracted a countless number of fans, not just thanks to their two hit albums, packed with Hedonism-hymns like ‘Too Much’, but due most notably to their outstanding live-gigs: bizarre costumes, eccentric dance support acts, scantily-clad burlesque dancers and a thoroughly spectacular stage show can all be expected. The question is: “Do you wanna party with Bonaparte?” To which the answer can only be a resounding “Yeah!”

Mit seinem Debütalbum „Here Today Gone Tomorrow“ sorgte Fritz Kalkbrenner im letzten Jahr für eine kleine Sensation. Noch nie klang die Verknüpfung von Melancholie und elektronischer Musik so schön wie bei dem Berliner DJ und Produzenten. Damit erfüllte er auch die hohen Erwartungen, die nach dem Überhit „Sky And Sand“ auf ihn gesetzt wurden. Die Verwandtschaft zu seinem berühmten Bruder hört man den Tracks zwar an, schließlich teilen sich die beiden hin und wieder auch die DJ-Kanzel. Fritz hat aber eindeutig mehr Soul im Blut, was auch sein LiveSet unterstreichen wird. With his debut album ‘Here Today, Gone Tomorrow’, Fritz Kalkbrenner has become something of a sensation in the past year. Never before has the combination of melancholy and electronic music sounded as good as in the music of this Berlin-based DJ and producer. With it, he has satisfied the highest of expectations, which were placed upon him following his super-hit ‘Sky and Sand’. His relationship to his famous brother can really be heard in his tracks; after all, the pair also shares the same DJ platform every now and again. Fritz has, however, distinctly more Soul in his blood, as is more than apparent in his live sets.

Die Schwaben Alexander und Sebastian Schwarz sind höchstwahrscheinlich nicht nur in der hiesigen Clubszene das bekannteste Brüderpaar, sondern haben sich mit ihren deepen House-Sets bereits auf der ganzen Welt einen Namen erspielt. Bekannt sind die beiden aus Stuttgarter Dance-Zusammenhängen stammenden Künstler natürlich vor allem für ihre umfangreichen wie hochwertigen Remix-Arbeiten, mit denen sie bereits The Rapture, Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode und Madonna einen tanzfl ächentauglichen Unterbau verpassten. Zuletzt erschien 2010 ihr drittes Artist-Album unter dem Titel „Chocolate“ Whilst being in all probability the most well-known pair of brothers on the local club scene, the Swabians Alexander and Sebastian Schwarz have also already gained a name for themselves on the global stage with their deep House sets. The two Stuttgart-based artists, whose background is rooted in Dance, are of course known best of all for their extensive and high-class remix works, which have provided tracks for The Rapture, Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode and Madonna with a base layer adapted for the dance-ﬂoor. The pair recently released their third album in 2010 with ‘Chocolate’.

Auch wenn sein Label „Stil vor Talent“ benannt ist, kann diese Beschreibung im Bezug auf Oliver Koletzki nur ironisch gemeint sein. Sein Stück „Der Mückenschwarm“ wurde in Groove und Raveline 2005

zum „Track des Jahres“ gewählt und verhalf dem studierten Musiker zum internationalen Durchbruch. Für seine neuen Produktionen holte er sich die Sängerin Fran ins Boot, mit der er auch privat ein Paar bildet. Auf den 2009er-Sommerhit „Hypnotized“ folgte im letzten Jahr das erste gemeinsame Album „Lovestoned“. Mehr Funk, weniger Techno, aber immer noch ungemein tanzbar. Even if his label is named ‘Stil vor Talent’ (‘Style over Talent’), this description can only be meant in a purely ironic sense when it comes to Oliver Koletzki. His piece ‘Der Mückenschwarm’ (‘The Swarm of Mosquitoes’) was selected by Groove and Raveline magazines as their ‘Track of the Year’ in 2005, helping this studied musician on his way to an international breakthrough. For his latest productions he managed to get the singer Fran on board, the two of whom have also since become a couple. The 2009 summer hit ‘Hypnotized’ was followed last year by their fi rst joint album ‘Lovestoned’, which favours more Funk over Techno and is overall incredibly fun to dance to.

Stefan Kozalla alias DJ Koze gehört ohne Frage zu den innovativen und über Genregrenzen hinweg angesehenen Elektronik-Musikern des Landes. Mit seinem entwaff nenden Humor, der sich in seinen facettenreichen Produktionen ausbreitet, arbeitet er emsig gegen die Dogmen der Szene an. Stattdessen fordert er sie und macht die Tanzfl äche immer wieder zum Experimentierfeld. Die effektheischende Abfahrt sucht man bei dem Hamburger vergebens, trotzdem treibt der Betreiber des Labels Pampa Records die Massen immer wieder an den Rand der Euphorie. Stefan Kozalla, alias DJ Koze, is unquestionably one of the most innovative and esteemed cross-genre electronic musicians in Germany today. Along with his disarming humour – something which is extended and interwoven into his multi-facetted productions – he works assiduously against the dogma of the music scene. Rather he challenges them, transforming the dance-ﬂoor into his very own experimental playground. Attempts to fi nd the point of departure for

the Hamburg-based DJ will ultimately prove fruitless. Nonetheless, the operator of the label Pampa Records keeps the masses forever on the brink of euphoria.

D i e VÖ G e l Hinter dem eigentlich eher unscheinbaren Namen Die Vögel steckt das illustre Hamburger Produzenten-Duo Mense Reents (Die Goldenen Zitronen, Egoexpress) und Jakob Siebels (JaKönigJa), das mit dem Track „Blaue Moschee“ einen der mitreißenden Technostampfer der letzten Jahre produziert hat. In ihren Live-Shows kommen jede Menge Blasinstrumente zum Einsatz, die mit unzähligen Effekten geloopt und verfremdet werden. So entsteht auf der Bühne ein pompös-irrwitziger Tuba-Techno, der mit monotonen Melodien und einer graden Bassdrum zum Feiern einlädt. Behind the rather unremarkable name of Die Vögel there actually lies the illustrious Hamburg-based production-duo of Mense Reents (Die Goldenen Zitronen, Egoexpress) and Jakob Siebels (JaKönigJa), whose track ‘Blaue Moschee’ (‘Blue Mosque’) has been one of the most stirring Techno-pounding productions of recent years. In their live shows they bring a whole assortment of wind instruments into play, looping and distorting them with an endless array of eff ects. And as such, a pompous and insanely hilarious form of Tuba-Techno develops on stage, inviting the crowd to party along to a mixture of monotone melodies and a level bass drum.

a n t h o n y r ot h e r Ohne Zweifel zählt Anthony Rother zu den großen Pionieren der deutschen Techno-Szene. Bis heute veröffentlichte er beinahe 20 Alben. Seine ersten Tracks waren stark von Kraftwerk und frühem Detroit-Techno

beeinfl usst. Durch den Einsatz von Vocoder-Stimmen setzte er sich zu dieser Zeit kritisch mit technologischen Phänomenen auseinander und entwickelte fast nebenbei einen ganz eigenen Trademark-Sound. Im Jahr 2007 erschien mit „My Name Is Beuys Von Telekraft“ Rothers erstes komplett digital produziertes Album. Bei seinen Live-Shows kommt jedoch weiterhin die altbewährte Hardware zum Einsatz. Anthony Rother must undoubtedly be accredited as one of the leading pioneers of the German Techno scene. To date he has released almost 20 albums in total. His fi rst tracks were heavily inﬂuenced by the music of Kraftwerk and the early Detroit Techno scene. Through to the application of vocoder vocals in his music he set himself apart by employing technological phenomenon – something, which was at the time met with controversy – and in almost a casual manner he developed with that a quite distinctive trademark sound. In 2007 Rother’s fi rst album to be entirely digitally produced was released by the title ‘My Name Is Beuys Von Telekraft’. Nevertheless, he still employs the tried-and-tested hardware of old for his live shows.

Over ten years ago the DJs KoweSix and Tobitob staged the truly legendary ‘Moonbootica’ club nights in their hometown of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The positive resonance from the events prompted the duo to produce their fi rst ever tracks in Tobis Sauna Club Studios and to release them from their

own label Moonbootique. While their style is heavily inﬂuenced by 80’s Disco and to some extent by HipHop, it can be described in the broadest sense rather as Electro-House. Thanks to their broad and diverse live sets, Moonbootica make up a list of the select few DJs, who have managed successfully to balance Hedonism with serious electronic music.

For years now he has been a resident DJ at the renowned Muna club, where its famed status is far reaching outside of Kaden’s Thuringian hometown. He works as both DJ and producer alongside his congenial partner Marek Hemman and from his label Vakant, Kaden has released his own EPs as well as remixes for such illustrious colleagues as Matthias Tanzmann and Trentemøller. Inspired by the 90’s House genre, his last album ‘Studio 10’ experimented with a combination of rap and percussion and was in turn met with much acclaim among both fans and critics alike.

Musikalisch sind die beiden in Goa und Psytrance beheimatet, entwickelten ihren Stil zuletzt aber immer mehr in Richtung Electro und Minimal. Unter dem Pseudonym Extrawelt traten sie erstmals 2005 in Erscheinung. Sie kamen mit James Holden in Kontakt und veröffentlichten die Maxi „Soopertrack“ auf dessen Label Border Community. Mittlerweile arbeiteten sie auch schon für solch renommierte Labels wie Cocoon und Traum. Extrawelt is only one of the several projects to be pioneered by the Hamburg-based production-duo of Arne Schaff hausen and Wayan Raabe. Initially the project went by the name of Spiralkinda, then later Midi Miliz, before becoming Extrawelt. Discovered by Fatboy Slim in Brighton during the 90’s, Krafty Kufts has made a name for himself ever since with collaborative works with Dynamite MC, Kurtis Blow and The Freestylers. From his own label ‘Against The Grain’, he released his only solo album to date back in 2006 entitled ‘Freakshow’, to which fans and admirers have been eagerly awaiting the follow-up ever since.

Seine Produktionen sind stark von Naturphänomenen beeinfl usst, weshalb sein Stil auch als „Öko-Techno“ bezeichnet wird. Vor allem Vogelgeräusche mixt der studierte Biologe gerne in seine Tracks und interpretiert damit Minimal auf seine ganz eigene Weise. Bei den LiveSets macht er seinen exklusiven Musikgeschmack publik, verliert dabei den Spaß am Tanzen aber nie aus den Augen. A few releases from the label Traum proved enough for Dominik Eulberg to get a foothold onto the Techno scene. His successful debut album ‘Flora und Fauna’ (‘Flora and Fauna’) picked up the accolade of best newcomer in 2004 as chosen by readers of Groove magazine. His productions are greatly inﬂuenced by natural and ecological phenomenon, which is why his style has been commonly labelled as ‘Eco-Techno’. As the former biology student that he is, Eulberg particularly likes to mix bird sounds into his tracks to give an interpretative form of Minimal music based on his unique individual style. After initially training to become a chimney sweeper, Peter Cornely back in the 1980’s was already on the path to a successful DJ career under the pseudoname ‘Karotte’. As a resident DJ in the Kassel-based club of Stammheim he entertained an ever-growing fan-base from 1994 onwards. The legendary radio programme ‘Karotte’s Kitchen’ gave him the recognition as one of Germany’s most multi-talented DJs from his fi rst mix of the U60311 House Compilation Series to his no less than ten-hour straight live sets. His particular selection of tracks simultaneously transverse boundaries between genres and still generate a homogenous composition of sound.

It was with the EP ‘Still’ that the Frankfurt-based artist got the wheels of his career into full motion, followed thereafter by releases from renowned labels like Cocoon and Great Stuff. Last, but not least, came his debut album ‘A Thousand Nights’ in 2007. His sets can be characterised by a range of deep Tech-House to Techno beats. Recently he released his stunning second LP ‘The Live Wire’ in 2009.

Successfully bridging the gap between the Electro and Breakbeat genres, his tracks have appeared on a number labels including most notably his own Mo’s Ferry Prod.

Tobi Neumann, the co-founder of the Munich-based Flokati-Club, has become a real key part of the SonneMondSterne Festival in recent years. Meanwhile, he has since relocated to Berlin, where his DJ sets, composed of Minimal House, Tech House and Funk, are just as legendary as his famed club-night sessions and his work as a producer and remixer for artists Chicks on Speed and Miss Kittin.

Lexy ist ein wahrer Tausendsassa. His DJ sets with KPaul have made him into an established member of the German Techno scene, while at the same time he runs the label MusicIsMusic, plays in the outfit ‘Die Raketen’ and has also made an appearance in the Roman Kuhn film ‘be.angeled’. His live shows are centred on re-exploring the roots of electronic Dance music.

Even from as early as his teenage years Johannes Heil has always been at home behind a set of DJ turntables, releasing his fi rst productions of the famous record label ‘Kanzleramt’. Today, he can proudly look back on a career that already extends back 17 years, wowing and entrancing fans both in Germany and in the USA thanks to the universality of his Techno classics like ‘Paranoid Dancer’ and various productions with DJ Slip.

eleCtro FerriS Früher mischte Ferris MC mit seinen harten Texten die deutsche HipHop-Szene auf. Im Jahr 2006 hängte er, mit bürgerlichem Name Sascha Reimann, die Rap-Karriere an den Nagel und starte mit Marc Deal das Electro-Projekt Maniax. Seit 2008 ist er Mitglied bei Deichkind und tourt parallel unter Namen Electro Ferris als DJ durch die Clubs der Republik. In times gone by, Ferris MC regularly used to mix it up on the German Hip-Hop scene with his hard-hitting lyrical texts. The same artist, who goes by the real name of Sascha Reimann, decided to leave his rap career behind him in 2006 to start out on the Electro project ‘Maniax’ alongside artist Marc Deal. Since 2008 he’s been a member of the group Deichkind and at the same time he’s performed as a DJ by the pseudonym Electro Ferris, touring clubs across the whole of Germany.

Zunächst war SIS Drummer einer Rockband. DJ Karotte und die Rhein-Main-Schiene brachten ihn mit elektronischer Musik in Kontakt. SIS war schnell angeﬁxt und machte sich an eigene Produktionen. Kein geringerer als Ricardo Villalobos unterstützte ihn, indem er den Track „Trompet“ regelmäßig aufl egte. SIS wurde zum ersten Act, der neben Villalobos auf dessen Label „Sei es drum“ veröffentlichte. Initially SIS Drummer had started up in a rock band but artists DJ Karotte and the Rhein-Main-Schiene brought him into contact with electronic music. Soon thereafter, SIS was simply hooked. Going into music productions of his own, SIS was supported by no less than Ricardo Villalobos, who regularly laid down his track ‘Trompet’. SIS was to become the fi rst act to release a track alongside Villalobos from the latter’s famed label with the title ‘Sei es drum’ (‘So be it’).

JaC e k S i e n k i e W i C z Der Warschauer DJ und Produzent Jacek Sienkiewicz hat es nicht leicht. Im Ausland gefeiert, versucht er beständig, die Techno-Szene Polens auf Vordermann zu bringen. Sienkiewicz führt mit Recognition ein eigenes Label, hat seine bisherigen drei Alben aber auf Sven Väths Label Cocoon Recordings veröffentlicht. Zuletzt reüssierte er 2009 mit dem Longplayer „Modern Dance“. The Warsaw-based DJ and producer Jacek Sienkiewicz has not had it easy. Celebrated abroad, he has been on a constant struggle in Poland to bring the country’s Techno scene to the forefront. Das House-Projekt Laserkraft 3D aus Mannheim und Kaiserslautern war mit ihrem Youtube-Hit „Nein, Mann!“ 2010 in aller Munde. Der Track zog direkt in die Top 10 der deutschen und österreichischen Single-Charts ein. “Nein Mann, ich will noch nicht geh’n, ich will noch’n bisschen tanzen” (“No, man, I don’t wanna go yet, I wanna dance a little longer.”) You’re not going to fi nd many club-goers who won’t know this chorus already! The House project Laserkraft 3D from Mannheim and Kaiserslautern were on the tip of everyone’s lips following their 2010 YouTube-hit ‘Nein, Mann!’. Upon its release, the track went straight into the top 10 of the German and Austrian singles charts and became an immediate dance sensation.

DJ W ! l D Paris gilt seit Jahren als eine der wichtigsten Metropolen in Sachen House Music. Dort wurde auch Guillaume Duchastel von pulsierenden Grooves für die Musik begeistert. Er begann bereits 1996 in den Clubs „Fumoir“ und „Palace“ aufzulegen. Es folgten Releases u.a. auf Andre Croms Off Recordings. Seine DJ-Sets fasern ausgehend von Tech-House in diverse angelehnte Genres aus. Paris has represented one of the most important metropolises in Sachen House Music for many years now. It is there where Guillaume Duchastel, aka DJ W!ld, was fi rst captivated and inspired by the music with its pulsating grooves. As early as 1996 he had already begun to play mixes of his own at the famed Fumoir and Palace clubs. This was soon followed by releases from various labels, including Andre Crom’s Off Recordings. His DJ sets branch out from a Tech-House base into a diverse and open mixture of genres.

D o r i a n pa i C Tagsüber verkauft Dorian Paic Platten im Freebase in Frankfurt – nachts legt er auf. Schnell machte er sich auch außerhalb Frankfurts einen Namen. Seine DJ-Sets bewegen sich zwischen Minimal Techno und Pumping House. Er ist Resident im Robert Johnson, bespielt alljährlich als Teil der Cocoon-Crew die Clubs Ibizas und veröffentlicht auf seinem Label „raum...musik“. By day Dorian Paic sells records at Freebase in Frankfurt, by night he gets behind the turntables to lays

down some electric beats. Fast making a name for himself outside of Frankfurt, Dorian Paic’s DJ sets range between Minimal Techno and Pumping House. A resident DJ at the Robert Johnson Club, he also makes recordings every year at clubs across Ibiza as a member of the Cocoon Crew, before releasing them from his own label ‘raum…musik’.

Nach seinen ersten Besuchen im Frankfurter Club Omen begann Markus Fix, selbst aufzulegen. Releases auf den Labels Cécille und Oslo folgten und fanden bei Kollegen wie Clubgängern großen Anklang. Chris Tietjen stammt ebenfalls aus der CocoonFamilie. Schon in jungen Jahren von Sven Väth entdeckt, gehört er mittlerweile zur DJ-Oberliga nicht nur der hessischen Szene. After his very fi rst visit to the Omen Club in Frankfurt, Markus Fix started to put down some mixes of his own. Subsequently he released his own productions from the Cécille and Oslo labels and immediately struck a chord with colleagues and club-goers alike. Chris Tietjen similarly stems from the same Cocoon music background and was fi rst discovered at a young age by Sven Väth. Since then, Tietjen has gone on to the very top of the DJ-ing scene, not only in Hessen by in the rest of Germany and internationally, too.

The young DJ and producer from Frankfurt, Sascha Dive, is one of the major players on the Rhein-Main scene. In recent years he hasn’t ceased to entertain and excite fans with his countless legendary House hits from labels like Cécille and Oslo. The talented Hessian artist is equally a genuine connoisseur of Afro-American House – something that you can really hear in every single one of his sets.

Den hippen Szenen aus Köln, Frankfurt oder Berlin ließ sich Hometrainer nie zurechnen: Seine Homebase ist heute wie vor zehn Jahren Bayern, und dort vor allem München. Er hat die Electro-Szene der Stadt durch verschiedene Clubs wie Rote Sonne und Harry Klein maßgeblich geprägt und über die Jahre auch mit und für befreundete Acts wie etwa Console gearbeitet.

The vibrant hippy scenes in Cologne, Frankfurt or Berlin have never held much sway for artist Hometrainer, whose continues today like he has done for the past ten years to base his home in Bavaria, most notably in Munich. He has had an immeasurable impact on the Electro scene of the city, particularly in his co-productive works over the years with friends and colleagues like none other than Console.

In den 90iger-Jahren kam Daniel Stefanik erstmals mit elektronischer Musik in Berührung. Von da an ging es stetig noch oben: Als DJ im Berliner Tresor und durch Zusammenarbeiten mit Moon HarbourGründer Matthias Tanzmann. Stefanik ist ein Hoffnungsträger des deutschen Techno. Bei Freude Am Tanzen fand er ein Zuhause. Sein Debüt „Reactivity“ vereint Dub mit der Wucht von House und Techno. It was during the 90’s that Daniel Stefanik fi rst came into contact with electronic music and ever since, things have rocketed for this DJ star. A real jewel in the Berlin Electro crown, Stefanik has courted success with his co-productions with the founder of Moon Harbour, Matthias Tanzmann. A symbol of genuine hope for the German Techno scene, Stefanik has really found himself at home with the collective ‘Freude am Tanzen’. His debut album ‘Reactivity’ fuses Dub with the raw energy of House and Techno.

Audiolith auf der Hauptbühne vom SMS.X5! Wer hätte das gedacht. Nachdem letztes Jahr schon Egotronic die Ehre hatte auf der großen Bühne vor vielen vielen alten und neuen Fans zum Durchdrehen im Schlamm aufzurufen, gibt es dieses Jahr noch krasser in die Tanzfresse vom Hamburger ElektroTechnoPunkRandale Label Audiolith. Hoffentlich ist es wieder schön matschig. Dann fällt man weicher beim pogen. Eröff nen werden den Showcase Saalschutz aus Zürich. Dann geht’s gleich weiter mit Egotronic aus Berlin. Beide haben ihre Wurzeln im verpeilten Elektropunk der Jahrtausendwende und werden dieses Jahr zehn Jahre alt. Und ratet mal, wo sie gemeinsam anständig ihren Geburtstag feiern wollen? Mal schauen, was sich die beiden Kapellen für diesen einmaligen Abend ausdenken werden. Trotz dieses exzessiven Programms sollte man noch ein wenig Kraft für Frittenbude aufsparen. Über die Jungs aus München braucht man eigentlich nix zu sagen. Geile Beats, schöne Melodien und korrekte Ansagen gibt’s auf der Bühne. Davor drehen alle komplett durch. Das Publikum der Bude hat mit Crowdsurﬁ ng-Orgien schon so manchen Security-Chef zu Wahnsinn getrieben. Wer danach noch stehen kann, verdient wirklich Respekt. Die Bands werden es nicht mehr können. Aber alles halb so wild. Nach einem Schnaps zur Stärkung geht’s weiter auf die wunderbaren Tanzfl ächen des SMS.

After last year when Egotronic, performing on the big stage in front of many old and new fans, had the honour of calling the people out to go crazy in the mud, this year the Hamburger Electro-Techno Punk label Audiolith will be giving even more to the people. Hopefully this time it’ll get nice and messy again! That way you’ll land softer when pogoing around. The showcase will be opened by Saalschutz from Zurich. Then it’s set to continue with Egotronic from Berlin. Both bands have their roots in the spaced Electro-punk of the turn of the millennium and will be marking their 10-year anniversaries this year. And can you guess where they best want to celebrate their birthday together? We’ll see what the two bands will come up with on this special evening. In spite of this extensive program be sure to save some energy left for Frittenbude. There’s really no need to say anything about the boys from Munich. Brilliant beats, beautiful melodies and correct statements on stage. At the front, everyone will just completely freak out. Frittenbude’s crowds are renowned for already having driven many security-chiefs to madness with their crowd-surfing orgies. When the bands can no longer go on and it’s all said and done, whoever’s left standing really deserves the respect! Never mind! After a nice stiff drink the wonderful dance ﬂoors at the SMS Festival will be waiting for you.

Nach mittlerweile über vier Jahren und mehr als 25 Releases hat sich das bar25 Label nicht nur einen Namen in Berlin gemacht, sondern auch ein äußerst vitales internationales Netzwerk aufgebaut. Ob in Rom oder Leipzig, München oder Moskau, die Veranstaltungen der Labelcrew von der Spreekante ﬁ nden stets großen Anklang. Nach diversen Stationen in ganz Europa wird das Label der Bar25 seine Künstler/innen in diesem Jahr erstmalig mit einem Showcase auf dem SMS-Festival präsentieren. Die DJs und Liveacts aus dem Umkreis des Hauses 25 werden kollektiv und drei Tage lang ein abwechslungsreiches und mitreißendes Show- und Musikprogramm fabrizieren. Die letzten erfolgreichen Releases wie Dirty Doerings „I Would“ oder Matt Johns „The Bridge“ sind nur ein Vorgeschmack auf die anstehenden musikalischen Leckerbissen. Der Gleichklang des akustischen Outputs zeigt sich hier nicht in einem messbaren Bereich, sondern in einer Frequenz, die am besten auf einer emotionalen Ebene erfasst werden kann. Das ist das Ziel des labeleigenen Showcase: im Austausch mit Künstlern und Veranstaltern den Vibe des Grenzenlosen zu präsentieren, wobei die verbindenden Momente, also die Musik, das bunte Treiben, die Freundschaften und schließlich auch eine gute Show im Vordergrund stehen. Neben den Machern des Labels Danny Faber, Peter Schumann, Britta Arnold und Sese sowie den Labelartists Niconé, Dirty Doering, Matt John, und Philip Bader darf man sich auf Freunde/innen und alte Bekannte wie Shonky, The Cheapers, Canson, Red Robin, Pilocka Krach, Sampayo, Mira, Sven Dohse, Gunnar Stiller und Fabiano freuen. Das große Finale begründet am Sonntag mit Nu ein Newcomer, der sich mit einem Selbstverständnis durch unterschiedliche Tempi und Musikstile hangelt. After a period of over four years and more than 25 hit releases the bar25 Label has made its name not just in Berlin but also on the world stage having built up an impressive and extremely essential international network. Auch diesen Sommer freuen wir uns ganz besonders auf ein wundervolles Wochenende unter Freunden und Freunden von Freunden auf dem SMS-Festival. Fast seit Beginn an haben wir von der MUNA Jahr um Jahr dazu beigetragen, eine Stadt aus Musik an der Bleilochtalsperre im wunderschönen Thüringen zu erbauen. So wie Saalburg die Heimat des SMS ist, ist es Thüringen für die MUNA und eine Vielzahl fantastischer elektronischer Musiker und Bands. Viele dieser Musiker sind heute ebenso wie das Festival selbst weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus bekannt. Dabei denken wir an Mathias Kaden, Monkey Maﬃ a, Douglas Greed, Clueso oder Bands wie Pentatones und Jack Hosé. Im MUNA-Zelt freuen wir uns 2011 neben großartigen Künstlern von Freude am Tanzen auf DJ Koze, die Vögel und natürlich unsere Residents, darunter Mathias Kaden, White Horse und Franz!, der uns mit seinen energiegeladenen vor Sonne strahlenden Sets immer wieder ein Kribbeln in die Füße und ein Lachen in unsere und eure Gesichter zaubert.

Once again this summer we are really looking forward to another wonderful weekend with friends and friends of friends at the SMS Festival. Year after year the MUNA have been helping to build this rocking city of music by Lake Bleiloch in our beautiful home of Thuringia. Just as Saalburg is the home of the SMS Festival, Thuringia is home to MUNA and a variety of fantastic electronic musicians and bands. Egal ob Regen mit Matsch oder Sonne mit Staub, die Second Stage der Brandenburg Allstars hat in den letzten Jahr so ziemlich jedes Wetter überstanden, das es an der Bleilochtalsperre gab. Da es im letzten Jahr Regen gab, stehen die Chancen für Sonne in diesem Jahr wieder gut, das hat uns die Statistik immer wieder gezeigt. Das Konzept bleibt wie in den letzten Jahren bestehen. Es wird eine große Anzahl an Künstlern aus dem weiten Land geben, die sich auf der Bühne präsentieren. Von Mecklenburg-Vorpommern über Brandenburg bis hin nach Sachsen und Thüringen sind bekannte Größen, aber auch Local-Heroes die uns als DJ-Set, Liveact oder als Beides ihre Interpretationen elektronischer Musik zeigen werden. Nicht zu vergessen, die Afterhour am Sonntag ab 12 Uhr, in diesem Jahr wieder mit Base & Ron Tom in alter Manier bis zum Schluss. Alle die dann immer noch nicht genug haben, kommen zwei Wochen später dann das letzte Summer Spirit im Herzen Brandenburgs besuchen. In diesem Sinne, wir sehen uns am 12. Aug an der Bleilochtalsperre. Die BRB Allstars gratulieren zum 15. Jubiläum, auf weitere 15 Jahre elektronische Musik.

Die wahren Perlen kommen wie so oft ganz zum Schluss: In diesem Jahr steigt das musikalische Programm auf dem SMS.Boat in die Kreuzer-Klasse auf. Unter anderem kann man sich auf Martin Gretschmann freuen. Den kennt man auch unter dem Namen Console oder als Teil von The Notwist. Auf dem SMS. Boat wird der Mann allerdings als Acid Pauli einchecken. So wie Acid Pauli kommt auch Hometrainer aus Weilheim. Auch er ist inzwischen ein Altgedienter des Genres, was man eigentlich von fast der gesamten Besatzung des diesjährigen Partydampfers sagen kann, schließlich sind auch Karotte und Mathias Kaden alles andere, als Schiff sjungen.

Saalburg liegt in Thüringen, nahe der bayerischen Landesgrenze unmittelbar an der A9 (das ist die von München nach Berlin und umgekehrt). Automobilisten, die aus Richtung Süden kommen, benutzen die Abfahrt Lobenstein, jene aus dem Norden verlassen die Autobahn an der Abfahrt Schleiz. Von den Autobahnausfahrten einfach Richtung Saalburg fahren (ist ausgeschildert). In Saalburg folgt ihr entweder dem Sound oder aber unseren liebevoll selbst gemalten Schildern zum Festivalgelände.

Für alle, die mit dem Zug zu uns kommen, gibt es wieder den kostenlosen Bus-Shuttle vom Bahnhof Bad Lobenstein und zurück. Abfahrtszeiten ﬁ ndet ihr auf unserer Website: If you choose to travel by train, your station is “Bad Lobenstein“ and our charge-free shuttle bus will take you from the station to SMS festival site. Saalburg is located in the south of Thuringia in Germany and we suggest travelling on motorway A9, which connects Berlin and Munich. If you visit us from the south (direction Munich to Berlin), please use exit “Lobenstein”; those who are coming from northern regions (Berlin to Munich) might leave the motorway at exit “Schleiz”.
