“I called Steed from Wisconsin because it kept snowing here and was making me depressed. I had heard so may wonderful things about Steed's psychic consultations which are combined with an Art Therapy-like experience. Once we discussed my Seasonal Depression, he meditated for 2 minutes and came up with an image and well as daily affirmations that have helped me tremendously. Steed created a piece of art that helped me with my Seasonal Depression. He channeled my spirit guide and the image came to him, a beautiful orange and gold spring blooming flower! I have it hung in my bedroom, it'a fabulous piece on canvas that looks ethereal and so warm. I look at it every time I get up or got to bed. Spring is in the air and I feel great! Thanks again, Steed!” I have been reading the tarot since the age of 8. Now, I currently use other vehicles such as Chines Buddhist Fortune Sticks. Consultation are available via phone, email or in person.

nyone who has studied quantum physics or audio/electrical engineering is aware of the fact that all of measurable existence presents itself to the senses in the form of a wave. These waves come to us in many forms: light waves, sound waves, brainwaves, microwaves etc., and our senses perceive only a fraction of the incoming sense data any of these different categories of waves could throw at us at any one moment. The frequency and the wavelength can be greater or lesser, longer or shorter, respectively, and certain waves cannot pass through objects, or be received by the senses, if that wavelength and frequency are incompatible with the object or sense in question. This is to say that what prevents you from putting your hand through a steel door are the incompatible frequency patterns of your hand and the steel door. Sounds simple, but it is true; steel has a very particular vibrational frequency, a much slower, denser frequency than, say, a light wave - therefore light cannot travel through it. Our sensory organs operate as wave interpreters and each sense perceives its own separate bandwidth of frequency. Most sound waves you can hear but not see and most light waves you can see but not hear. The human hearing bandwidth is roughly 20hz to 20khz and once waves dip below or raise above this bandwidth we can no longer hear them with our ears, but does this mean that sound ceases to exist all together? I know dogs surely don’t think so. Further, this begs the question of whether or not everything has a sound. The ancient Greek thinker Pythagoras went so far as to say that everything is made of number and music. His recognition that mathematical, harmonic laws govern the coming into being, sustenance and form of everything in the material world necessarily begs this question as well. What is the sound of a Rock? Water? Even Colors? Our senses can only detect input in their respected forms from within a certain bandwidth, but the waves travel up and down forever in frequency. With this logic, that would mean that not only would everything have a sound but also a color taste and smell. Just because you can’t hear it with your limited range of hearing does not mean that a sound is not being emitted; in fact, Pythagoras would say that sound, the most obviously vibrational sensory data, is as close to a building block of reality as you can get, so as long as you exist, so, too, does sound. As long as the universe exists, so, too, does sound - the “uni-verse” or “one song”, is a creation story in which we are all a musical note, operating at our own vibratory frequency and it is the frequency of our mood that determines whether we are in harmony with that song or not. What song are you playing?

SACRED SOUND

Sacred Sound is in the Heart This is our first English / Spanish langue article in Vision Magazine. Why? for countless reasons. One is that the world is changing Southern California and Northern Mexico are the cauldrons where many of the most positive world enhancing changes are boiling up. Vision Magazine exists to shine light on ideas and actions people are developing which are destine to transform the entire planet and how humanity thinks, creates, eats grows spiritually and lives. If anyone wants to keep up on those changes or better yet be part of those changes they need to become part of Vision Magazine’s extended family. Get us your ideas and insights, tell others about what we are doing and stay connected. We want to begin doing this in Spanish and as well as in English. So we plan as 2013, goes by, to expand the number of Spanish/ Mexican cultural articles we print and eventually launch another Vision Magazine exclusively in Spanish.

Sound is perhaps one of the most important subjects that are rarely spoken about with the capacity to change us from deep within, to stir our emotions and take us to isolation or complete elation. Sounds with purpose have the power to gently soothe a baby to sleep, break objects or habits, heal the body or even call in the divine. The word, just like many sounds, have the power to change our perception, our thoughts and our reality. The word Sacred derives from the Latin sacrum/sacrare, referring to God and anything in his power; also the word denotes a divine connection. In geometry, Sacred deals with mathematical proportions found in nature and the universe such as Phi, the Golden Mean and many others. So is there such a thing as Sacred Sound? The first thing many people do when seeking balance is to sit in silence. Sacred because it helps us connect to our divine essence and encourages us to relax, open, breathe properly and focus. It is the state of sound that helps us calm the inner waters so that we may connect, understand, achieve peace, activate the inner aspect of our gifts and live more fully. But isn’t silence “from war, nothing so profoundly affects the absence of sound? the future of all men as much as Not entirely, there always pollution... Daily, now, the climatic is sound, but sometimes changes prove beyond doubt that the it is simply outside the planet is sick and needs immediate and frequency range we can skilful care to re-establish equilibrium.” audibly perceive. Silence, Hierarchy’s perspective as articulated by a Master of Wisdom however is a beautiful sound; quiet, nurturing Introductory Presentations and strengthening. A space 3pm 1st Sunday of month for discovery, it is the meditative Yin to our daily Controversial Bookstore habitual Yang hustle of this 3063 University Ave, San Diego modern world, that allows us to find the true meaning 6:30pm 2nd Thursday of month of why we are one with the Philosophical Library universe. If there is a sound 1330 E Valley Pkwy #G Escondido that is Sacred, silence has to be one of them. Sacred books throughout cultures will speak about the beginning, or how the world was formed, directly referring to sound, air (or words, specifically) and water as the first elements to shape our surroundings. www.share-international.org “..In the beginning was the

Word..” Words, however, are simply containers to express idea-forms, so they may be intrinsically based on thought-forms. In some traditions, like branches of Kabbalah, certain informations will be passed on only by word to the student or adept, some say, directly affecting their energy field. Mantras are a customary practice that have been used for thousands of years to create transformation or manifestation in various cultures and written about extensively in the Vedas. Even though there are schools of thought that believe specific mantras to be the voice of Buddha and that the vocal sounds have a deeprooted meaning unrelated to the person making the sounds, some of the reasons why mantras may be so powerful could lie in repetition, metrics, rhythm, focus and sound. The phrase “..watch what you say, for it becomes your reality..” is somewhat of a cliché nowadays, but can hold much truth especially when reciting mantras. Even when no words are used, the simple yet profound act of toning has been proven to increase your bio-magnetic field significantly. Toltec wisdom speaks of being impeccable with your word, and when we understand that every word has the power to shape our reality... we may come to choose better words! This is the basis of affirmations, which like mantras, can be recited out-loud to intentionally manifest that specific affirmation, such as I AM healthy, I AM in harmony, I AM at peace! Sound frequently travels in waves like ripples on water, causing a resonance pattern that can be felt, seen, sensed or heard. Some sounds are pleasingly gentle and uplifting and others that are sharp, roaring and forceful, yet when we combine elements in coherent patterns we find that we can profoundly enjoy specific combinations. Music is such an example because it also works with mathematical patterns that the composer writes in. The Classical masters such as Mozart and Bach were adept at structuring their harmonies to create unique sounds beautiful in color and form. Many musical selections in the classical genre are now scientifically proven to make you smarter by stimulating your brain coherency. Similarly, the Monroe Institute’s binaural technology (sound + technology) stimulates brain coherence and even helps you discover altered states of mind. On both of these types of music, if they specifically help the body and mind connect to a better state, couldn’t they be classified as Sacred sound? If the underlying essence of “Sacred” is the divine connection it can bring, or that connection of truth it provokes for each person in their heart, then Sacred sound may be a subjective matter for many, but the study of cymatics can lead us to understand that sound can also shape patterns that hold form, so then while macro-cymatics could look toward shaping the solar system and galaxies, we could come to realize that sound, in all of its fundamental qualities, is Sacred; that every word we say can have a deep and lasting impression on our energy field; that in the permeating structure of the universe, we are all an intrinsic element with the capacity to cause a fundamental shift in the current state of the world... especially when we work coherently as a global community. But understand that the Sacred is within ourselves and the connection can happen wherever it needs to happen, especially if you are seeking it, regardless of whether you are chanting, looking into your loved one’s eyes or at a rock concert. What Would Life Be Like Without Berries? Hi, I’m Jay North, no not the one that was Dennis The Menace. I am the one you saw on TV or heard on the radio talking about the positive results from an organic and positive living lifestyle. Now everyone throughout the country has access to simple life-enhancing methods with Jay’s Organic Lifestyle Tips. What Would Life Be Like Without Berries? Berries were used in early Judeo-Christian biblical times to make wine before grapes were used. Their essence was prized by kings and thought to enhance man’s ability to satisfy numerous concubines. Ah, the goodness of berries, so good for you and oh soooooooo good to eat. Spring, Summer and Fall, what would we do without strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and the like? Just in case you missed the news from the past few years, red fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants and actually build the immune system. I love the scene in the movie Forest Gump, when Forest meets his soon-tobe new partner in the shrimp business, and the wonderful black character names off the huge array of ways to cook with, eat raw, add to salads and sandwiches, and the many, many other ways to enjoy shrimp. And so it is with North American berries. You can: - Eat them raw by the handful, - Naturally — make berry pies, - Prepare fruit cups with ice cream, - Decorate salads, - Make homemade chocolate flavored treats and make a fortune doing it, more on that tip in a minute, - Eat berries in cereal, - Add berries to tea, - Add berries to muffins, - Eat berries in cream, - And............Need I go on? The health secrets of berries are just now coming into the forefront, whereas in other “off-shore” countries such as South America, Tahiti, Hawaii, and Asia, exotic berries have been used to cure the common cold and heal cuts for centuries. Tahitian Miranda and the Himalayan Goji fruit are just two examples of the rather incredible findings for the berries/ fruit being used to cure many common complaints far exceeding the common cold. For example, recent research has discovered a group of four active polysaccharides unique to the Goji berry that account for most of the berry’s far-ranging benefits. These photonutrient compounds turn out to be of great importance to the well-being of the entire body, including the treatment of numerous ailments. www.wisegeek.org/what-are-polysaccharides.htm How to Grow the World’s Best Berries Start with good soil Preparation Successful berry production depends on careful attention to every detail of production. Most important is proper land preparation, long before strawberries, raspberries or other berry crops are planted. Avoid mistakes in the pre-planting process because the effects can

be felt for the life of the plant and the economic potential of the crop becomes limited — that is, if you happen to be interested in a commercial crop. The best management and cultural practices cannot compensate for soil problems that could have been corrected before planting — when in doubt, consult your local agricultural commission. Just about every berry crop requires good, well-draining, mulched soil, with a balanced *pH* between 7 and 8 on a scale of 0 to 14. Each plant should have its own environment — which means its own home soil especially created for the life of the plant. Dig out a small hole in the soil that will receive the bare root plant in the late fall or early winter. Fill the hole with home made or store bought products that are perfect for the berry of choice. Berries require light watering until green appears, then increase the amount of water but never to the point of drowning the plant. Use organic soil, organic mulch, organic fertilizers, and natural bug defenses. My favorite organic fertilizers are made from animal products — blood, bone, hoof, and horn is all you need to attain plant growth and flowering of the plant. Most berries grown in the USA need a constant temperature of at least 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the growing and harvesting seasons. Space raspberries four feet apart. Tip 1: Raspberries like soil with a pH of 7, well-composted mulch, a high nitrogen content and animal manures. Tip 2: Strawberries like a high pH of 8 or 9. When available, use pine needles to cover the plant. Tip 3: On a planet that has been used for agriculture for many hundreds of years, depleted soil quality and pollution has made our food crops somewhat less potent. The Number One Secret to Great Tasting Berries is Minerals! Adding essential minerals can be cheap and easy. Buy prepared multi-minerals from the stock feed store or discount food store. When feasible, buy in bulk. Add one tablespoon of multi-minerals to one gallon of water. One gallon will water about four or five mature plants near one another. Repeat application of multi-minerals once a month. Major Benefit: Calcium is what gives berries their flavor. Tip 4: Is your strawberry crop not bringing the income you expected? Dip them in chocolate and sell the fruit to local fancy restaurants and hotels. BEAUTY

Health Benefits of Facials

Facials are skin treatments for the face, generally given by licensed estheticians, that maintain and improve the quality of the skin. Facials tend to include an analysis of the skin, followed by a series of cleansing methods of the skin, exfoliation, a facial massage, steam and a cream or moisturizer. While facials have a variety of benefits for the skin on the face, there are also many health benefits as well.

“A Facial it’s More Than Meets the Eye” By Julie Pagano Facials regulate the immune system, aid in detoxification, reduce the amount of fluid that has built up in the body, and aid in stress relief when it includes “aromatherapy, lymphatic drainage, exfoliation treatments and acupuncture.” Lymphatic drainage helps release toxins that have built up in the body. Types: Benefits of Facial Massages in Facials Facials typically involve massages. These massages aid in blood circulation. Massages during facials also help with lymphatic drainage, and aid in the relaxation of the facial muscles which can slow the onset of wrinkles in the face. Skin cells can also be renewed by using this technique, which can also reduce puffiness and sagging in the face. Types of Facials and Benefits There are a variety of facials that can provide many health benefits. Anti-oxidant

facials contain free-radical fighting nutrients such as Vitamins A and E, which help remove pollutants from the body. Collagen facials use warm vapor, deep pore cleansing, and lymphatic draining massages, which benefit the skin by preventing wrinkles, reducing dark circles and ridding the body of environmental toxins. Benefits of Gold Facials, Aromatherapy Facials and Galvanic Facials According to Beauticians on Net, aromatherapy facials use oils that have curative properties that relax the body, clear congestion in the skin, eliminate toxins, rejuvenate the skin and improve the skin’s functions. Benefits of gold facials include lymphatic drainage, removing toxins from the body, regenerating new cells, and improving the elasticity and smoothness of the skin through the use of 24 carat gold. Galvanic facials use a gadget called a galvanic tool which also removes congestion in the skin and helps the skin retain moisture. SACRED SOUNDWAVES

SACRED SOUND

By Michael Peter Langevin

In the beginning there was the word and the Word was with God. And the Word was God. And then all creation came forth from the first sound. That is not how the bible reads but maybe it should? Words, music, noise and sounds of all makes and models exist almost nonstop in our modern urban life. As with most things we adore the people, who bring us songs, words and sounds we like. Those that make us feel good. Yet we despise those sounds and noises like middle of the night car alarms or sirens which cause us stress and disturb our peace of being. Maybe they are all meaningful and sacred? This issue’s theme is Sacred Sounds. We featured many images of renown DJ’s on our cover because sacred is in the ear of the beholder. Sacred sounds can be intoned ancient Sanskrit texts or spiritual chants or sexual seductive top forty songs or club bopping DJ’s. The difference between sacred and banal is intent! When you make a sound, music, talk or other do you do it with high intent or with disdain? When you hear a noise which could be off putting do you look to be bothered or to see the Devine cosmic energies at work? Our worlds are full of sound and we can use sacred sound as an extremely effective tool to raise our vibrations and improve our lives or we can be victim to not interpreting the sounds in the highest interpretations possible. As with every aspect of our lives the choice is ours every moment we listen and hear.

THE SOUND OF HEALING By Sydney Murray

I wrote an article in December of 2012 about my unique blood disease and all the awesome support my family, friends and Vision Magazine’s extended Community had given me. At that point I thought I was getting better and on the return route to normal. One bone marrow transplant later and five hellish months later, I realize that healing from serious and rare illnesses is not an easy, pleasurable nor quick process. This month of May I have begun to feel somewhat cautiously better. What does that feel like? What does that sound like? It feels like me being able to be in the Vision Magazine office almost daily again. It sounds like tears of joy for me being able to do the things I love the most again. To all who reached out and supported me in this extremely challenging period of my life I make the sacred sound of Gratitude. To anyone who was unsure about my or Vision Magazine’s future I make the sound of come on back with confidence. A new chapter is dawning and you cannot yet imagine what that sounds like. GREEK TO ME

THE SONG IS OVER By Michael Raysses

M

y earliest memories of childhood are of sounds. I grew up in a household where extended family either lived with us or were at least constantly circulating through. The clatter of dishes being washed, the inimitable bang of a coffee pot being placed on the stove, the chorus of voices that wafted from the kitchen, all raised in an effort to jumpstart the day. At some point, those noises became ordered, even melodic. They led me to a lifelong love affair with music before I even consciously knew what music was: a swarm of invisible bees perpetually pollinating the flowers planted on the side of my young head, creating an eternal Spring within me. Music’s lure was so strong for me that it became irresistibly visceral. I remember a Saturday night when I couldn’t have been more than five, hearing amplified music drift from the parking lot behind the church at the end of my street. As it turned out, I was hearing the strains of a sock-hop, where the dance floor was nothing more than a slab of asphalt. Somehow I talked my Mom into dressing me in my sartorial finest (brown corduroy pants with an elastic waistband, paired with a shirt that I ultimately learned was a faux Paisley print), so that I could walk to the end of the block and sit on the curb directly across from the parking lot, with my feet dangling as they brushed the drainage grid in rhythm to the songs I was hearing while I peered through the chain link fence at the garden of Eden on the other side. From there it wasn’t long before I noticed that the William Tell Overture could literally impel me to get up from wherever I was when I heard it, and begin to race around like a colt trying to break free from a stable only it saw. The funny thing was that my family observed this, too, and there were times when entertainment was so scarce that they would play it on the stereo only to see how it affected me. With no thought of their expectation, I never disappointed them. Listening to music was transformed by the act of seeing it performed live. As moving as pure sound could be, there was something about being able to see that sound created that lent a dimension to it that enlarged the song, made it more than it had been before. Now when I heard a note of death-defying clarity, I had the image of what it took to create that sound, whether it came from a guitar or a trumpet or a drum. It lent what I was hearing dimension, humanly so, so that I understood that the sound was not some abstract phenomenon but the result of a very real and palpable effort. This equation was set on its ear back in 1975; I attended a Who concert at the Chicago Stadium, a venue designed for sports events, not concerts. Yet, there I was, third row, standing on my chair in front of my idol, guitarist Pete Townsend. Looking up at him, awash in the froth of the power chords he dispatched like Zeus’s lightning bolts, I saw a look of such beatitude on his face as he looked out onto the throng that I had to know what made him so luminous, so powerful. Instinctively, I turned around to see what he was seeing, and just as I confronted the people facing him, I was blown off my chair. I literally fell down, as if I had stepped into a spiritual Specializing in all Matters of the Heart; Palm, Tarot, Animal Psychic, Chakra Balancing Available For Parties and Group Discounts 3617 E. jet-stream born of the torrent of energy that came thundering off the people who’d gathered there. It was life-altering: the crowd was the source of Townsend’s gift. Or was it? I couldn’t tell any more. Driving home that night was a revelation. The lines between creator and created, audience and auditory, all merged and blurred, leaving me to understand that the stage is just one factor in the inscrutable equation of creativity’s existence and thrall. I remember thinking that after witnessing what I’d seen, I wanted to be both the cause and the effect, as well as the recipient, of creativity’s dividend. But music wasn’t my mode of expression. For a while, acting was. But as I got older, speaking other people’s words felt less fulfilling, with few exceptions. As I became more comfortable with writing, I learned that the words I wanted to speak had to be mine. There was a directness, a tightness of fit, that made that my only viable option. I have had the good fortune to write for this magazine for the last six years. That will change starting next month. Vision is headed in a new direction, and I am, too. Speaking for myself, I respond to change much in the same way most people do to getting kicked in the shin. It’s nothing I welcome, and my default reflex is almost always one of rabid resistance. Though I flinched when I found out, I know it’s for the best, and here’s why: Though I don’t know what’s next for me as a writer, what I do know is this--I write for you, the reader. Granted, I deal with topics that bother me, beguile me, or confound me, but I do so with the hope that these things have the same impact on you. And that by writing about them, I shed light on them, make them less mysterious, less daunting, or at least something you can put your arms around and conquer in your own time and fashion. I have been blessed with emails from readers over the last six years that have buoyed my waning spirits; sometimes those messages weren’t necessarily of praise, but it didn’t matter. Just the act of reaching out meant that someone, somewhere, had been moved to communicate something in response. And for a writer, that’s as good as it gets. I’ve always strived to write things worthy of your time and effort. If you’ve ever read any of my columns, I thank you. If you’ve reached out, bless you for taking the time to do so. I urge you to never forget the role that you, the reader, play in the ongoing dialogue that exists between you and any writer whose work you engage with. It’s necessary and sacred and vital. For now, though, this song is over. And if that’s Greek to you, that’s more than good enough for me. Michael Raysses is a writer/NPR commentator who lives in Malibu, California. SACRED SOUND

Sacred Sound in Learning Communities By James Stewart & Ed Maupin

N

oises surround us. The alerts and beeps of our digital devices compete with constant whir from machines that keep our modern life humming. Though the distance between us has shrunk with technology, many people express a growing need for true intimacy, deeper understanding and a real sense of community. Deliberately incorporating sacred sound into our daily lives and communities creates this harmony, connection and the experience of being our authentic selves. We are both well regarded massage therapists and experienced teachers at The International Professional School of Bodywork (IPSB) where we show students how to use touch and bodywork to create personal healing, growth, and awareness. Beginning with IPSB’s founding 35 years ago, our community uses sacred sound each day to literally, “set the tone,” for the day’s education and learning. We call it, “Sounding.” Anyone who has participated in a choir or chorus knows the depth of connection that takes place when a group makes music together. We sit upon a streaming legacy of Eastern and Western traditions that embrace various forms of toning, chanting, and singing. These techniques change our energy states and evoke the presence of what some call the Divine. When performed in community they cultivate harmony and connection. Some of the Western traditions, such as Gregorian chanting, were already in our culture for centuries. Many Eastern forms of sounding made their way into the music and spiritual disciplines during the New Age. The founder’s of IPSB learned chants derived from Hindu and Buddhist sources at Arica Institute, a school of consciousness. The IPSB Sounding Meditation technique has evolved for the past decades as we have experienced, experimented and learned. Sounding puts focus upon the breath. You give the sound body and shape while paying attention to your body. Explore slowing it, lengthening it, quieting it. Typically using single syllables such as, “Aee-Eee-AyeOoh-You.” Each resonates differently in our bodies. We chant them with attention to where we feel them in our bodies, since breath and tone is the key to different states of consciousness. The longer and slower the breath, the more relaxed and deeper the state of consciousness. The more rapid the breath, the more agitated and even panicked the state of consciousness. Students gain encouragement, remembering that breath is the vital, “umbilical cord,” sustaining our life. You can last days without water, weeks without food, but only minutes without breath. The continuous inhalation and exhalation of air is our primary access to life. We share the same air and celebrate being interconnected and unified via our shared breath. More advanced forms of sacred sound emphasize how voice creates the world. Breath and voice become primary aspects of the fundamental notion of evocation and invocation, of states of energy and consciousness, if not divinities. In Genesis, God spoke saying, “Let There Be Light.” And, there was. The notion, “Abracadabra,” is another perfect example. There are many traditions which claim an association with the origin of this word. Traced to the Hebrew tradition it means, “I create (A’bra) what (ca) I speak (dab’ra).” With this principle in the background our community pays close attention to what and how we are communicating with each other. Practically speaking, toning is an exercise in refocusing, of showing up and being present in the moment. It is a simple act of dropping all other concerns, except being in the moment. Back to the classroom. As the inhalation completes and the tone of the exhalation begins, the students leave the stress of the outside world, and its noise, behind. The vibration carries them. Clearing a path for new healing and growth. Being centered and grounded, hearing the sound of the real authentic self. Opening new avenues of listening and learning on the massage table. Experience a Free Sounding Vibrational Meditation at I.P.S.B Massage Therapy School in San Diego on Sunday, June 16th, 6 p.m - 7 p.m. (??). Visit www.ipsb.edu or call 858-505-1100. Goals: To inspire Vision readers, generate interest to use sacred sound, and make the IPSB community proud. James Stewart, BA, HHP, is a graduate and faculty member at IPSB for 30 years and has operated a bodywork practice since 1977. He developed the Sensory Repatterning bodywork technique and offers classes in Dreamwork, Essentials and Contemporary Methods bodywork courses. Ed Maupin is former President of IPSB and current faculty member. For 45 years, he’s offered Rolf Structural Integration, learned directly from Ida Rolf at Esalen in the 1960’s. He also teaches Somatic Psychology.

LIFE QUAKE™

Ask the

LifeQuake™ Doctor Dr. Toni Galardi

Dear Readers: After six years with Vision Magazine, this is my last column of Ask the LifeQuake Doctor here. I will continue to publish in Counselor Magazine and you will be able to find my latest columns at my website: http:://www.lifequake.net. I have enjoyed answering all your questions and serving Vision Magazine with this column. May all your deepest hopes and dreams manifest in the most perfect way. Peace, Dr. Toni Greetings Dr. Toni, I am taking you up on the offer (hopefully it is not too late) to write in and ask for assistance/direction/ideas for my challenge. I will try to keep it short. Birth date: 10/17/ 73, time: 10:30 AM, place:----My challenge: I think this may be one you’re getting a lot lately. I’m 39 and have spent about 15 years in a structured and/or corporate work environment. Despite always knowing this was not how I wanted to spend my days, the stability and growing income kept me there. Along the way, I came into the study of Kundalini Yoga and eventually became a teacher of the practice. I love teaching the yoga. Separately, much of my corporate work has been in technical writing. I started out loving this but have gotten bored of it and am no longer challenged. I took another position in Aug. 2011 within the company where I started as a tech writer (the new position being that of reliability engineer) and it did not turn out to be a good fit. I have been looking for another job since the summer. I’m looking at tech writing jobs because this is what I know and am good at, but the idea of starting another job doing the same thing brings no enjoyment or anticipation with it. Being fed up (I have been with the company itself since May 2008), I resigned from my company--with no other job lined up--at the beginning of March (however in an attempt to keep me on and for which I am very flattered and appreciative, they offered to find another position for me). I accepted in an effort to “buy time” while I continue looking for another position. I just no longer know what to do. I have been on three interviews for tech writing that have not worked out. I need a solid income and do not feel that the yoga teaching can do it, and am at a loss for how next to proceed. Do I just stay where I am (it sure seems this latest company is trying hard, both energetically and career-wise to keep me), or look to make a change? 14 V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E • J u n e 2 013 • v i s i o n m a g a z i n e .c o m

And, if I do aim for change, what do I look for? I am a very introspective and philosophical person, and I have spent a lot of time trying to see the bigger picture in all of this, but I have truly hit a wall in terms of how I next proceed in this lifetime and within the reality that I am living. Thank you for your time and any insight and suggestions you might have. Dear Reader: You are a born teacher. In fact, teaching yoga is a great fit for you. Your lesson is to make it on your own financially so it may be time to stop getting a paycheck. Since they really want to keep you, is there any way you could present them with a wellness program where you do yoga and a stress management program on nutrition and meditation and worked as a technical writer for them part time? Your astrological chart shows that you really are being called to find the vocation that makes your heart sing. Another possibility that I see is to keep your job for the moment and start looking for a financial partner to back you in getting your own yoga studio going. You have luck in the house of partners. You also have luck in the career arena so whatever you truly are passionate about could work out very well. Since you are a writer, perhaps doing part time editing jobs might supplement your income. There are websites like Elance.com and others where a writer can be a gun for hire. You could definitely make this happen if you are open to many possibilities, some of which I outlined here. Good luck! In the words of Joseph Campbell, “To find your own way is to follow your bliss. This involves analysis, watching yourself and seeing where real deep bliss is — not the quick little excitement, but the real deep, life-filling bliss. When you follow your bliss… doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors; and where there wouldn’t be a door for anyone else.” Dr. Toni Galardi is a professional speaker, psychotherapist, career coach, and the author of The LifeQuake Phenomenon: How to Thrive in Times of Personal and Global Upheaval. Tapping into an Abdundant Universe

C O N V E R S AT I O N

By Tomas Loarca

I

t’s very easy to get caught up in the routine of everyday living; waking up in the morning, going to work, eating lunch, and then retreating as fast as humanly possible to the comforts of home to do it again the next day. I call this my narrow focused mentality or more simply put my lower elevation energy. If you are like me and get into this frame of mind, how is it possible to re-inspire ourselves and attain a higher mental energy? I believe Shakespeare gave the antidote when he wrote, “My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep. The more I give to thee, The more I have, for both are infinite.” When I first processed this thought, a flow of creativity and inspiration quickly descended like dew on a beautiful bright morning. In the days of Shakespeare, the size of the sea was incomprehensible, vast, and eternal. We have now come to map the sea, measure its bounds, and found its limits. However the metaphor relates to another abundant endlessness, the Universe. The Universe like the sea is boundless and abundant, containing an infinite amount of intelligence, creation, love, and possibility. There is more then enough for everyone and everything. The Universe gives and is waiting to give more but it does not impose its self except to those who truly desire and ask. Like a parent the Universe serves us and gives us what we need as evidenced by oxygen, water, sun,

fuel, etc. It also gives us what we ask for. Several years ago I received an audio book from a close friend which gave great importance into forming relationships between intention and others. I learned to write down my desires, believe I would attain them, make a plan, and then live my life as if I had already received them. I had written down four desires at the beginning of 2012. I asked for them and looked for different ways to give back to what was being given to me. At the end of the year, three of the four desires came into existence. I did not do anything great except for writing, thinking, asking, and serving. However I believe this was an extremely powerful exercise that allowed me to tap into a new possibility and a higher level of energy. At this point the Universe again served me by transmuting my thoughts into physical existence. The final equation in the circle is: how do we serve a Universe that serves us so abundantly? The answer lies in service to others. We become full partners with the Universe when answering the needs of others by serving them. There is a joy and loving energy that accompanies service to others. Service can be as simple as saying hello, giving a complement, leaving a nameless gift, or endowing something great. Big or small the size of your service does not matter; it develops relational bonds, strengthens neuro-pathways, and fosters love. Ask for guidance in identifying one in need, you will be lead by source to fulfill your intention. Everyday service is a secret of those who find daily peace and have spiritual abundance. Service emulates love and

returns to the giver many folds over. It brings the mind to a higher level of energy which in turn invites the power of inspiration and creation. You will be inspired and develop a direct conduit with source. I will never forget the inspiration of my mother who taught me the power of service. She took me, unwillingly, to give a valued possession to a less fortunate family anonymously. Her lesson that day could not be paid in gold as it taught me the extreme joy of service that has stayed with me for decades. I will never forget the inspired anonymous family that blessed my sister and her young family with a substantial amount of money in their mailbox during a time of hardship. I will not forget the foster teen who said “this is the best summer I’ve ever had” after the formation of a traveling foster brotherhood developed by several generous collaborators who were never known to the youth. No matter what state you are in, formulate your thoughts towards a young Juliet who said “the more I give thee…the more I have”. You are blessed with abundance, give of it freely and you shall not run out. Tomas Loarca is the author of A Possible Reality: Carlos Loarca Artist and Muralist. With over 15 years playing at clubs from London to LA, Miami to Mexico and Shanghai to Ibiza, Mikey Gallagher has made his career as a world class DJ. Drawing from sexy funked-up beats and twisted disco basslines, it’s his understanding of timing and momentum in the mix that tease the crowd into a higher state, entrancing the dancefloor, before unleashing a record that will have people not just leaping up and down, but howling with emotion. From humble beginnings playing to the après ski crowds in Val D’isere back in the early 90’s, Mikey soon progressed to playing big parties for the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Kate Moss and the fashion elite in London. This was backed up with a heavy schedule of nights on the UK Club scene for the likes of Ministry Of Sound, Miss Moneypennys and The Cross. His affiliation with Ministry of Sound went further with a residency on the Ministry of Sound’s Worldwide Radio Show ‘The Ministry Dance Party’ for 4 Years - his mixes lifting thousands of clubbers across the globe as they listened to his sets. He was also resident DJ on nationwide tours for Ministry Of Sound for their worldwide selling albums ‘Annual’ and ‘Clubbers Guide’ and co-hosted the popular MOS Express radio show on Ministry Of Sound Radio for 5 years. In recent years he has completed National tours of China. Moved to LA and became headline resident DJ for hedkandi. Toured all over the USA & Mexico. Touring also took him to Uruguay, Chile,

Canada & a weekly residency in Las Vegas in 2012. In 2013 he left hedkandi & launched his own Kings Of Clubs Global radio show, which is already syndicated to radio stations across the World with ten’s of thousands of weekly listeners. A Kings Of Clubs tour of North America is currently being scheduled. DJ DAN

DJ Dan has been synonymous with the American dance music industry for over two decades as a record collector, house innovator and true legend of the scene. However, his music bandwidth stretches much further; representing the spirit of 70’s disco and 80’s/90’s house with contemporary flair that makes him like no other artist on the scene. People have been missing the funk and that’s what DJ Dan does best. Born and raised on the West coast, Dan was entrenched in music from an early age, 1989 to be exact, a time when the rave scene was blossoming. Many visionary artists have queued up to bottle Dan’s unique sound; with a remix discography that reads like a music industry hall of fame; Depeche Mode,

SACRED SOUND New Order, the Pussycat Dolls and a Tribe Called Quest have all enlisted the boss of breakbeat to tap into his hailed production abilities. Earning his first Platinum record in 1999, Dan’s remix of the Orgy cover ‘Blue Monday’ was revered around the world and reaffirmed his reputation on a global scale. When not in the studio, Dan’s playing out all over the world to audiences looking for a proper dance floor education and a great time. Dan’s also emerged as one of the most popular DJ’s at Burning Man, taking the party outside of the club and into the California desert - where much of the American dance scene started. In October 2012 DJ Dan returned with his sophomore album, Disko-Funk Odyssey. It’s rich and throbbing, packed with 16-funked up tracks that unties the worlds of funky house and techno. It’s rhythm…it’s soul…it’s real dance music.

Reid Speed

Tristan D

Reid Speed has been an integral part of EDM for over a decade. She is known for pioneering the heavy bass sounds and multigenre sets that are a staple sound of the dance scene today from her underground drum & bass roots. When she isn’t working behind the decks, you will find her heading her award winning Play Me Records label group, best known for introducing acts such as Dillon Francis, Singularity, Figure, Bare, and Cyberoptics to the world. She is currently working on a yet-unnamed project with former Foo Fighters violinist Jessy Green, combining vocals, violins and heavy dance beats with a decidedly feminine touch.

2013 has been another soul shaking year for British DJ/Producer Tristan D. Since making the transatlantic move from London, UK to San Diego, CA in September 2012, he’s created quite the impact on the Electronic music in Southern California. Tristan’s international profile as a producer/dj has taken him all over the globe, and has had recent Beatport top 10’s releasing under the Dutch record label ‘Spinnin’. Tristan’s taken San Diego by storm, in November 2012 starting the huge new Electronic music show on Jammin Z90.3 FM. Since starting the show, it’s become the most listened to “specialist” radio show on the west coast of the United States, with a weekly captive audience of 2.2 million listeners. In March 2013 Tristan D became a resident for the mighty Insomniac events, and appears monthly at Exchange in Los Angeles, amongst other large scale Insomniac events across the USA. .

Kelly Lynch

The long and short of my becoming a dj can be summed up by plainly stating it “happened by accident, but it wasn’t an accident that it happened”. To clarify that... i need to roll back my history to early teen years where I held a weekend job that paid me $100 each time I showed up. I had no bills, so virtually every cent of that C-note was exchanged for a small stack vinyl from a myriad of artists hauled home from the same Tower Records, which was walking distance from where I grew up. By the time left for college several years later, I had amassed quite a collection of music, although, my intention in doing so was never in preparation of one day being a dj. I just always loved to play and introduce music to myself

and others that I thought was cool that others might also think was cool. Turned out I was right, that is, I had a knack for it. In college, a close friend of mine had an older brother whom was, at the time, promoting one SD first successful underground clubs. It was called “The Gallery”, hosted by Chaos Productions. I was their flanker door guy that pulled pretty girls into the club from the endless line they always had down the block. The Gallery had an opening dj act that one day up and quit to start his own biz. All of a sudden a successful club had no opening dj.... and I was like “i gotta buncha records”. I literally ran home from the club that very nite and hauled back a few crates from my collection. I became a dj before I was ever a “dj”. That is, I had no skills. Just a library. The resident dj that played in that same club (which later became Riches in Hillcrest) took hold of my desire to play music, but easily saw i needed guidance. He gave me some pointers, and coincidentally, I had just moved into an apt with a person whom did mobile djing, but had a coffin for me to practice on. I became slightly proficient therein. It wasn’t til a bit down the road I moved in with Jay Perry (JP) whom was one of SD pioneer house music dj’s. it was he that introduced me to underground electronic music, and in exchange for me carrying his crates into his gigs, he’d allow me to play for his audience in the early part of evening, and maybe, just maybe a closing 20 mins. In any case, I was soon identified as a guy aspiring to dj. With that, I got a few low paying gigs. In ‘90, a close college friend purchased a restaurant / nightclub in San Luis Obispo, and he needed staff, namely a dj. He hired me as resident and it was my job before the club opened to design my dj booth to my liking, build my library, then dj five nights a week in this new SLO town hot spot. It was there that I really became a seasoned jock as all I did was mix, practice, buy music and play live nightly. The place folded after a few years, which prompted a move back to San Diego. A now long time friend named RishY Rajoo approached at a gig and offered to back me for a recording project. We did that, I started to blow up in familiarity,... and by the mid 90’s I was usually booked solid both locally and in many other states across the nation, as well in Mexico, Canada, and even abroad to Europe on a few occasions. The rest is, as they say, history.

DJ Jon Bishop I was first introduced to DJ-ing back in the late 80’s by Phil Frias who was the resident DJ at a club in Pacific Beach, Ca. I would go in and help him with lights sometimes, and he showed me about pitch turntables and how a mixer works. I had a great collection of 80’s music and in 1988 i discovered house and techno music which blew my mind. I did the very first rave in San Diego called ‘The Future” with some guys from the U.K. It was one of those “right place at the right time” that put me on my musical journey. I’m thankful everyday i was a part of building the EDM scene in the u.s.a and worldwide.

MORGAN PAGE

Morgan Page has certainly come a long way from his native Vermont. Since the release of his third full-length album, In The Air, Page has enjoyed many “firsts.” Not only has In The Air surpassed year-to-date sales of his two previous releases - 2008’s Elevate and 2010’s Believe – the album garnered Page his first #1 hit on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay Chart and his first gold single. Page began crafting the material that would eventually become the album in early 2010. In between stints on the road, Page assembled an all-star cast of guests to appear on these original tracks. That cast includes Tegan And Sara on “Body Work” and “Video,” Jonathan Mendelsohn and Andy Caldwell on “Where Did You Go?” Greg Laswell on “Addicted”, and a powerhouse combination of BT, Sultan, and Ned Shepard and Angela McCluskey (Télépopmusik) on the record’s first single “In the Air.” The lead track rises from an elegantly enticing electro haze into an infectious hook, moving from progressive house into propulsive pop. In 2011 his remix of Nadia Ali’s “Fantasy” received a Grammy nomination for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. In the meantime, he also received four International Dance Music Award nominations, including 2012’s “Best American DJ (North America)” alongside Skrillex, Deadmau5 and Kaskade. Page’s style is distinct. He builds his own space in the middle of the pop and electro worlds sonically. Page has ignited crowds around the world and at festivals such as Coachella Arts And Valley Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival Spring Awakening Festival and more. It’s also the year that Wynn Las Vegas signed him for a prestigious yearlong residency alongside other artists like Tiësto, Deadmau5, Afrojack and Steve Aoki. With In The Air, the Los Angeles-based artist strikes a brilliant balance between kinetic house music and blissful, radio-ready pop. Touting club anthems with the right dose of indie and pop flourishes, Page creates a danceable, diverse, and deep collection of songs. “I want people to play it over and over again,” concludes Page. “I want them to sing these songs back to me when I’m playing live. I want to make music that lasts.”

When Revolvr pulls the trigger, you feel it. Revolvr a.k.a. Touvan Sughiarto officially entered the electronic music world in 2011. Fast-forward to 2012, and the past year and half has been awash in one successful release after another. Every single track Revolvr released in 2011 and 2012 has reached the Beatport Top 100 chart, and his latest EP, “Two Worlds Apart [Big Fish Recordings], went on to demonstrate Revolvr’s dynamic range. Other remix highlights include a unique take on Luciana’s “I’m Still Hot”, which hit #1 on Billboard’s Dance chart, his remix of Florence + the Machine’s “You’ve Got Love”. On stage, his music really comes to life. Boasting a show comprised of mostly originals, he’s played to packed crowds at Avalon (Los Angeles), Beta (Denver), Last Supper Club (Seattle), and a slew of summer festivals. Ultimately, His latest EP featuring Lea Luna was released by Dim Mak in Fall of 2012, the ride is only going to get even bigger and better.

DJ Ideal Emerging from the underground sounds of electronic music, DJ IDeaL has made an impact on dance floors world wide through his energy driven LIVE sets and unique style of mixing with tricks and effects while going through more tracks than your usual ‘DJ’. As resident to some of the top event producers in the USA & through the airwaves on his weekly online radio show & official iTunes podcast plus present film and production projects, DJ IDeaL has become a familiar name in dance music in a global way. 2013 kicked off with great news following a wonderful 2012 in which he would add FM radio once again in addition to his weekly online show and podcast on BounFM.com, by co-hosting regularly ZDM on Z90.3FM San Diego with fellow producer dj Tristan D. 2012 proved to be a full filling year with notable billings alongside some of the top performers in the industry.

The sacred sounds, clear sounds, clear energies and clear vibrations shared and multiplied by thousands of participants at the Bakti Fests raise the vibrations of all who participate and then go forth and bring this into their day to day lives in the world. Ram Dass (The famous author of long time best selling book “Be Here Now,” first went to India in 1967 when he was still Dr. Richard Alpert, an already eminent Harvard psychologist and psychedelic pioneer with Dr. Timothy Leary. In India, he met his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, who gave Ram Dass his name, which means “servant of God.” Everything changed then - his intense dharmic life started, and he became a pivotal influence on a culture that has reverberated with the words “Be Here Now” ever since. Ram Dass’s spirit has been a guiding light for three generations.Through the auspices of Center for Spiritual Studies, Director Sridhar Silberfein brought Ram Dass over to Maui in 2004 to host a retreat. When recognizing a notable difference in Ram Dass’ well-being, it was decided he would stay on the island to maintain good health. After securing a home, assistants, doctors, therapist, and making sure Ram Dass was well taken care of financially, the Love, Serve Remember Foundation was created to replace Center for Spiritual Studies in 2009. Simultaneously Bhakti Fest was created and founded by Sridhar— from a vision he had on the stage at the Woodstock Festival standing alongside Swami Satchidananda. Looking out at the field of humanity of 500,000 wild Americans, Sridhar said to Swamiji, “wouldn’t it be wonderful to be casting our eyes on the same amount of people chanting the Hari-nam (the names of the Divine)?” Forty years later, the stage was set and this envisioning came to fruition through the workings of Bhakti Fest. Now there are no other events quit like them. For more information go to http://bhaktifest.com/

Sonido Sagrado vive en el Corazón Este articulo da inicio a nuestra primera edición en español! By Abelardo L. Rodriguez

P

No completamente.

2 4 V I S I O N M AG A Z I N E • J u n e 2 013 • v i s i o n m a g a z i n e .c o m

SACRED SOUND

John Digweed LessThan3: What part of a DJ’s life has changed the most since you have started to spin? John: For me it would probably be the SD card, because lugging records around is a hassle. Now my back will last a little bit longer. We used to carry two very heavy record boxes, and now it’s just a few SD cards and off you go. LessThan3: Many people credit SASHA and you as helping to create the progressive genre. Do you believe you were essential to that scene, and what do you think of the progressive sound nowadays? John: Obviously we were pioneers of the progressive sound, but the stuff that you hear in progressive now is the stuff Swedes play, Tiesto, Afrojack (AFROJACK), and all that. I don’t really play that type of music. It’s always hard because people look through your Wikipedia and label you as a progressive DJ and maybe in the ‘90s or early 2000s that was right, but my sound has progressed to more tech house and techno. The current progressive sound is something I really don’t know much about. If I look on the progressive charts on Beatport, there is not one record I know there or even play. LessThan3: Who do you view as the biggest up and comers? John: There is this producer in France called ELECTRIC RESCUE who I am playing now, but overall there are a ton of fresh faces that are making the scene amazing. LessThan3: To play off this topic, what would you say the hottest up-andcoming genre out there right now? John: It’s tough to say, but I think it would be that sexy house vibe that’s been coming around lately. It’s got a really groovy beat, and I think both girls and guys enjoy it. LessThan3: How has your career changed since going solo? John: Gone solo? LessThan3: We are referring to SASHA & Digweed. John: To get things straight, we were always solo DJs, and not a combination. So when it comes down to it, I’m the same. LessThan3: What are the benefits of being a duo in production and onstage? John: I think when there are two big DJs playing together it adds some serious weight to the lineup. It is an industry that welcomes that, and when we came together to play it really added a ton of energy. It’s a totally different vibe. LessThan3: How would you compare the UK’s EDM scene to that of the US scene? John: Obviously we have had a huge scene in the UK for many years, so it’s nice to see that the US has finally caught up, but it’s very commercial in the US in the

US. When it blew up in England, it blew up with underground music. When it blew up here, it came with pop records like The BLACK EYED PEAS. Overall I’m happy it has gotten big here in the US, though I wish it were a bit different. When a record blows up in the US you can just go to the record store and buy it, but when this happens in the UK, you have no clue what it is. Over here they listen to the same DJs play the same records every week, and also still like it. I don’t get it. It’s just top repetitive. Why would you want to hear Levels for the fifteenth time today? In England people wanted to be surprised. People in England would not stand to hear Levels as much as they do here in the States. LessThan3: Is a perceived American “mainstream” artist such as Skrillex (SKRILLEX) accepted in the UK? John: SKRILLEX is huge in the UK. He just finished up a huge college tour and sold 18,000 tickets in less than four hours. I’m really happy for him because he is a really nice guy with his own original sound. He does what he does and is just super nice all the time. LessThan3: Describe your sound in LessThan3 words. John: Forward-thinking electronica. Thanks to DJLIST.com & DJSasha.com

A Time of Dance and LovE

By Katie Gallanti

E

very generation has it music and its own way of experiencing something new and transcendent. The sixties’ generation weaved songs of peace and love imbued with poetry and harmony. The generation after that sought the new by destroying the old and breaking free from harmonic structures. Jarring sounds, disjointed lyrics, electric guitars smashed on stage, piercings, punk rock and spiky hairstyles were their way. My generation wished to change the world through dancing as one big tribe to the rhythm of driving electronic beats. We found our transcendence through an urban interpretation of shamanic dance: a mix of a love, third eye and heart chakra opening drugs, repetitive trance inducing movement and eclectic electronic sound. A creative concoction,

with some side effects for those that overindulged, but which, for many who participated directly in the emergence of “dance culture”, worked in creating a permanent opening to something larger and other, an experience that would shape and transform the rest of our lives. Like the generations before us, we did not change the world in the larger sense of the word. In fact in many ways our “Love and Dance” ways never really emerged intact from the underground scene from which they were born. The true dance culture, such as the UK dance scene of the late eighties to mid nineties, would only reach mainstream some years later, when it had already changed, remaining for the most part a behind the scenes phenomena. It manifested as a hidden pulse beating underneath society, rather than a trend taking place in full view.

The early UK rave and dance scene embodied the Pluto in Scorpio energy of the times, Pluto being in astrology a symbol of deep transformative processes, often happening within the underbelly of the psyche. Transformative and powerful, our scene was a creature of the underworld, imbued with its own rough edges and hidden mystery. Especially so in London, where many of the dance events of those days took place in abandoned buildings and warehouses, in underprivileged and half forgotten neighborhoods. Many of the DJs and musicians of this scene, a little older than the generation they catered for, were born with Neptune, the ruler of poetry and music, also in Scorpio, a perfect creative match, for a generation seeking rebirth, through a nocturnal yet visionary path. There are many ways to find transcendence. The most popular now is that of the new age, that seeks to

SACRED SOUND elevate through focusing on the positive, meditation, optimism and peace. In many ways this spirituality was created by the boomer’s generation, the same Neptune in Libra people that colored the sixties with poem and song. Our generation is and was more scorpionic, intense as the dark of night, seeking transformation through digging through tunnels inside the mind, accessed through the shamanic stomping of one’s feet. We burned away in the intensity of the dance all our inner dross, transmuting our “stuff” through the rhythm and then emerging as transformed by fire. Our music and events reflected this. At times they could be extreme. We sometimes danced for days at a time, almost flirting with a limit that wanted broken, so we could pierce through the veil. And pierce through we often did, into a visionary space induced by the trance of the dance, in which the ordinary dissolved, the mind and the heart opened, and where the self was stripped down to what was true. As we experienced altered states and the opening of the third eye, we had life changing insights and visions of beauty, with colors and sound merging and opening up the imagination. And the barriers between us dissolved. If at the beginning of these events we were all strangers, by the end there

was often a merging, an experience of real oneness, that is hard to describe. It was almost as if half way through the night our molecules of humanity, through the joint experience of the dance and of the beat, came together in a harmonious whole. By the end of the night we were no longer a cluster of strangers, but family and tribe. For many of us the dance scene was the first initiation into the full opening of the heart. Dance experiences aside, there was the music. House music was a baby of disco and funk at first, but mutated quickly into other forms. New genres emerged both in the US and in the UK. From the original Chicago House and Detroit Techno, to the UK’s Acid Techno, Trance, Hardcore and Jungle, creativity was the name of the game. Everybody was adding their twist to this new music. The initial funky party music

gradually became deeper and more complex. By the mid nineties in London, there were venues like Club UK, hosting DJs who played much more sophisticated and intricate content, electronic music claiming its

place as a serious art. Sven Vath, Laurent Garnier, Cosmic Baby, Mark Spoon, Derrick May, Sasha and too many others to mention entertained with their compositions. We cued up for hours to be able to listen to the masters at work. Many of these people are now famous in their field, but at the time most of them had not even released CDs. They worked exclusively live and on vinyl, playing for the crowd in the middle of the crowd. Literally, as the DJ booth was located in the middle of the dance floor. “The scene” hit the mainstream around 1996/7. DJs like Paul Oakenfold and Paul van Dyk released CDs that became international hits and commercial megaparties were starting to happen in plain view. But by that time, “the scene” had already in many ways been tainted and was beginning to gain a bad reputation. It had morphed. It became more and more about drugs, hedonistic escapism and the search for the next buzz, than about love and unity of its beginnings. This was, however, a natural process of decay for an experience that, in hindsight, was always supposed to be an opening, rather than a permanent doorway. The heart openings, the oneness, the mystical expansion, the visionary trances, were, after all, a preview of transcendent vistas to be reached by other means. Although peak experiences are often a launch point for the beginning of a spiritual journey, there are no short cuts to spiritual development, as short cuts almost always lead down blind alleys. But many of us would not have even taken that first peak into the “other worlds”, nor would have had an experience of pure love motivating us along a spiritual quest, without this odd end of millennium initiatory dance-life adventure. The dance and electronic music scene, from the late eighties to mid nineties, was, for many who took part in it, a true breakthrough experience. People stumbled on it and, often overnight, they changed. At raves often one would hear these stories. They were

remarkably similar. People of all ages and backgrounds would accidentally find themselves into the dance scene and they rapidly gained a new lease on life. The combination of group merging, driving hypnotic music and a culture of love unlocked closed doors inside people and showed them that they could be more. It showed them that being as one and operating from the heart was more important than the yuppie culture of money and status from which they emerged. And it gave them permission to dream. For me personally, this was a time in which I made the transition from being a young and very left brained physics graduate into being a more people orientated healer, with a strong creative and spiritual foundation. At twenty-six years old I entered “the scene” with no interest in creativity or spirituality. But the direct and experiential mystical quality I experienced through dance and music with my tribe changed the way I perceived the world. I started to draw my visions and write poems, and took the mysticism I experienced on the dance floor, home. My third eye opened during those years and stayed open. And so did my heart. I was changed in permanent ways. In fact I doubt that I would be who I am today in many areas of my life, if I had not gone through my own personal “summer of dance”. This experience was not uncommon. There was a very special creative and transformational energy to those years. And many awoke and changed direction

in their lives. It was a time ripe with potential. I am sure every generation has its own version of this same story, as each of us brings something special and new into the world, our gift, so to speak, to the grand collective unfolding. May we, and all the generations that follow, continue to weave our threads of beauty into our world with our music, our love and our stories. Aries: Empress (3 of Swords) As challenging as it seems, you must free yourself from a toxic situation. All your good intentions have morphed into daggers of desperation and there’s nothing to gain from staying. Acknowledge your pain and relieve yourself of this burden. The weekend of the 7th will bring a confrontation that is long overdue. Your family will be involved in this struggle, so prepare to go somewhere else for support. Marital problems pushed under the rug will have severe consequences in the future, so address the issues now and work to resolve them. It’s also a good time to face health-related problems like addiction. Taurus: Tower (Knight of Cups) As you become more intimate with your true self, you begin to develop more compassion for yourself and others. You understand how your sense of self-importance has stood in the way of deeper connections to life. Once you accept what is, you’re not afraid to see things as they are, and not ashamed to express your truth. This month, emotionally charged experiences will catalyze this authenticity. In every moment there is the opportunity to expand beyond your comfort zone. However, sometimes the existing structure must crumble to make room for the new. Reach for help and you will be supported. Gemini: World (6 of Cups) This month finds you feeling nostalgic and sentimental. Take time to express your feelings to those you care about; someone close really needs your attention. Family matters are more important than usual and should be one of your top-three priorities. Make goals that support your vision of what a family could be. Look for ways to gently heal a painful wound from childhood that reappears in your life. Don’t be afraid to ask for extra support. Around the 13th, a sibling relationship takes on a new twist and, as a result, you become closer and more honest about mutual feelings. Cancer: Devil (5 of Swords) Challenge and struggle are perhaps the greatest deterrent to success. Don’t back down in the face of opposition or, even worse, blame others for your own misuse of power. An area in your life has you stretched beyond your integrity and, in your plight, you’ve ignored the fact that you don’t have to fight for what is rightfully yours. Peace and acceptance are much more powerful allies than brute strength or even intellectual wit. Do not be ashamed to give up – losing the battle doesn’t mean you lose the lesson. The 23rd presents a temptation worth resisting – watch out! Leo: Chariot (Ace of Swords) Although conflicts are a natural part of life, it’s how you manage them that decides if you do, or do not, overcome them. You will be faced with a challenge that requires your fullest attention; if you react without focus, you will fail. Be mindful, not cunning, nothing positive comes from proving your point. Feelings of frustration will likely arise, but like a skillful charioteer, you must direct your impulses wisely and without ego. Around the 3rd, your patience will be tested when unfinished business from last fall turns up unexpected consequences. Handle this maturely and all should be fine. Virgo: Hanged Man (4 of Swords) Feeling caught in a place of constriction without the ability to move or even think straight? It’s essential to give up or surrender to the experience in order to revise your outlook. The lesson is to learn how to change your perspective and detach from the ego. Although things seem difficult, this is part of the path. Practicing patience leaves you open to insights, which will free your mind and end the struggle. Let go of the past to make way for new enlightenment. Around the 19th, you’ll encounter a bewildering situation – do the opposite of what’s expected.

Libra: Fool (Queen of Swords) Expectations are a natural part of starting out on a new journey, but they can also fence you in before you even begin. No amount of planning will prepare you for the surprising twist this month. Around the 5th, a scent of adventure may lure you off your beaten path. Equipped with nothing more than your sharp wit, you’ll do fine taking this detour. Don’t hold too tightly to your assumptions, or they will cause more strife than you can handle. It would be wise to avoid arguing with female authority figures unless you are armed with facts and figures. Scorpio: Death (2 of Wands) There’s potential to move forward; however, something must be relinquished in order to obtain this. It’s imperative you realize how circumstances and behaviors are holding you back. This will require you to break routines, stretch beyond your comfort zone, and face your fears. You cannot stop the inevitable, and, as transformation begins, your identity will succumb to the consequences. Behind every ending is another start. Once the past is put behind you, there’s room for something greater. The weekend of the 21st marks the threshold for this change. Rather than fight against the current, use this period to launch new ideas. Sagittarius: High Priestess (4 of Cups) While emotional intensity is strong this month, your first instinct may be to hide. Should you try, you will only fall deeper into overwhelm. The purpose of these feelings is to rescue you from a recent bout of apathy. Avoiding the emotion keeps you from receiving the essential message. Be still and listen. At the very least, observe the currents of your emotions. Don’t be afraid to submerge yourself in the depths. You may be surprised to find that your internal resources are much stronger than the external circumstances. The Full Moon on the 23rd begets a mystery. Capricorn: Temperance (9 of Pentacles) You are the Alchemist this month. Recognizing the causal relation between people and situations that appear contrary or that seem arbitrary or confusing to others gives you the power to see how all things are interrelated. Use this knowledge to review your own life and explore unresolved emotions. Find the correlation from the past to synthesize the present, creating a new emotional perspective from which to assess the situation. You have the opportunity to combine the energy of thought and feeling in order to generate harmony and self-healing. The New Moon on the 8th could bring a lucrative business deal. Aquarius: Sun (7 of Swords) The clouds of doubt begin to clear as you glimpse a shimmer of happiness. Allow this to radiate through your being and burn away excess stress. Life should begin to look brighter. That’s not to say that your problem will magically disappear, but you will begin to understand and accept the deeper meaning of what’s been happening. Issues from the past must be let go of – especially if you want peace and contentment. This release requires forgiveness of others and yourself. So let your optimism shine through and lead you out of the dark, into a new day. Pisces: Star (Page of Cups) A vague feeling of disenchantment lifts this month, as a refreshed sense of faith and purpose wash over you like holy water. Around the 14th, the light of clarity evaporates your doubts, restoring motivation and selfconfidence. A recent test of faith has brought you closer to your own source. As you honor a deeper relationship to this power, you honor your truth. Be open to feelings as they arise and allow them space to move through you without attaching a value. Truth and purpose are fluid; they take the shape of what contains them. Your mind and heart are vessels, so be wise and keep them clean.
