The value of values - an article for legal services professionals

Getting down to specifics The value of values The LSA review has prompted much comment about what law firms are doing wrong. We thought we would redress the balance and focus on what we feel they have got absolutely right! In these days of Google domination, Innocent smoothies and the rise and rise of the Co-op, it is clear to see the power behind not just brand values, but values as a business. No longer do graduates want to work for a company who provide ‘great customer service’ or bonuses for staff, they are asking what that company does for others. Buying a bar of chocolate, you are faced with the same choices – to support an organisation which empowers third world countries through fair-trade policies or just something which tastes nice. Through good times or bad, it is always those with strong and identifiable values who win out in the end. In addition, they tend to have more motivated employees; recruitment is a doddle and the need for a PR company, practically pointless. This is a simplistic view of course, but one which highlights a very important thing – law firms tend to be built on an inherent and strong value system. Honesty, integrity, supporting communities and protecting people are very much part of their reason for being. Yet, this being ‘a given’ means that they are not fully exploring this very major advantage – one which will prove to be key in reforming law practices in the UK. We at Vision Republic regard ourselves as a value driven organisation – we even have a constitution.
