Discover Mâcon, town town of history This small Gallo-Roman town, named Matisco, was evangelised in the third century. It was promoted to the rank of Cathedral town (bishopric) in the 6th century after some of Saint Vincent's relics were given to the town. It used to be an administrative town, part of a powerful county sold to Saint Louis in 1239 (King Louis IX), then given to the Duke of Burgundy in 1435 and later on handed back to the French Crown by Louis XI after the death of Charles "the reckless". The town suffered a lot during the Wars of Religion and the Revolution destroyed his bishopric. Mâcon is endowed with monuments of diversified and imposing architecture. The Wooden House, adorned with griming sculptures (15th century), a lot of townhouses like Montrevel (actually the town hall) which was typical of the Age of Enlightenment, the Saint Laurent Bridge and its recess sheltering a statuette of Saint Nicolas, patron saint of barges; Hotel Dieu Hospital designed by Soufflot, the Charity (also constructed by Soufflot) and its barrel for newly-born abandoned babies, old Saint Vincent church.
Mâcon, Lamartine's birthplace Mâcon has much evidence of the life of this famous man, who was both a poet and a statesman, such as the Church of Saint Vincent, where he was baptized (built in the place of St Peter Church) and in which his funeral took place (on 4th march 1869); Ozenay House, bought by his father in 1804; his family house in Rue de Beauderon de Senecé; the Lamartine's Museum (Senecé House) in rue Sigorgne containing a collection of documents and information concerning his life.
Guided tours of the town centre You can visit Mâcon with local guides/interpreters of the Tourist Office who will help you to discover the different aspects of the city. There are outside visits, walking tours, with not only cultural, but equally amusing commentaries. Length of visit: 1h30. Tours in French, English, German, Italian and Spanish. Cluny Abbey The spiritual and artistic capital of the Middle Ages. A European Heritage site. Founded in 910, the Benedictine Abbey of Cluny was governed by a line of exceptional abbots and at the height of its influence in the 12th century; it was at the head of an "empire" of some 10,000 monks. The main abbey church is quite simply breathtaking with the highest vaulted roof of the Romanesque world rising some 30 metres above the nave. The bell tower is equally impressive. The rich décor of the abbey church can be seen in the finely carved capitals from the choir, masterpieces of Romanesque sculpture, now exhibited in the granary. The tour also includes a 3D film to gives a sense of the majesty of what was once Christendom’s largest church. Tournus Abbey The Monks of Noirmoutier fled before the Norman invader, came here and built this church to shelter the relics of their founder Philibert. The Abbey church of Tournus represents one of the most revered sanctuaries of early Romanesque art. Exceptionally well preserved, this monument's pinkish and ochre-coloured stones overlook the historical city of Tournus along the Saône River's western bank. It is one of the masterpieces found on the Carpenters' Guild road. The abbey's interior creates a most surprising effect of light and shadow off of both the transept and large nave, as well as by the slender columns and the vault shaped by transverse arches. The abbey church also contains a crypt and the Saint-Michel Chapel. A number of medieval mosaics that illustrate the zodiac and the works of monks are now placed on display. Connected to the church via the confessional, the abbey's buildings comprise the cloister, chapter house, refectory and cellar. Opening times: all year 9 / 7 pm Church service on Sundays at 10.30 am Entrance fee: free of charge for non-guided tour
