The 6th European Congress and Exhibition on Intelligent Transport Systems held in Aalborg was a great success. The city’s intimacy and modern atmosphere gave the congress a dynamic and forward looking feel - just what we were going for. As a location, Aalborg was superb as we were blessed with wonderful weather every day that was only out shined by the hospitality of the local people. Aalborg’s charm and size offered a level of calm and convenience that was much appreciated when gathering and coordinating such a large number of people. Arnold van Zyl

Human scale conferences - at the top of the European continent While Copenhagen is the main hub to Scandinavia, the Baltic and Europe, Aalborg in North Denmark offers some of the best conference facilities in green and safe surroundings in Scandinavia. Being the 3rd largest city in Denmark with more than 200,000 citizens, Aalborg is a bustling university city boasting an intimate and historic city centre. Still, it is a real human scale city with everything within walking distance, where conference participants will sense full intimacy and not feel lost.

At the top of the continent, we put life into conferences both inside and outside the meeting rooms. Everything a keen conference participant could desire is available in the city of Aalborg and the surrounding region at the northern tip of Denmark’s Jutland peninsula. And in Aalborg, an event is not “just another event”. All involved partners, be it local authorities or the business community, feel an immensely strong commitment to ensuring the quality and success of your event and that all guests leave Denmark a unique and memorable experience richer.

Just imagine travelling to the city without stress or delight in a 10 minute traffic-free transfer from the local airport. Where else is this still possible?

17

Excellent conference facilities

in the bustling heart of the city

The venue for the International Conference on NeuroRehabilitation will be the Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre, idyllically situated in the centre of Aalborg and yet in midst of the beautiful green spot of the city, the Kildeparken. Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre is one of Scandinavia’s largest and most flexible congress centers with 500,000 visiting guests and 1,000 events on a yearly basis. Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre is ideally situated in the city’s largest park right in the heart of the city. The congress centre is just a 10-minute drive from Aalborg Airport and it is located in the city centre, allowing for the most optimal networking setting to take place during the conference. Having undergone a major refurbishment in 2012, the congress centre is equipped with the latest technology and all modern facilities required in order to make every event successful. F&B is supplied by “Papegøjehaven”, the Centre’s excellent restaurant, which can cater for as many as 3,000 guests at the same time. The congress centre provides 700 parking spaces, Wi-Fi, fax, cash machine and information desks. There’s an English pub in the basement with darts and skittles and, with the park on its doorstep, you can easily pop out for a walk and a chat, go jogging or simply relax. The International Conference on NeuroRehabilitation 2014 will take the following conference halls and rooms into use: 18

Wauww! What a welcome Official welcome reception at the waterfront's new shining star The City of Aalborg is delighted to mark the opening of the International Conference on NeuroRehabilitation 2014 by hosting the official opening reception. The astonishing architectural masterpiece, The House of Music, will open its doors exclusively for the participants of International Conference on NeuroRehabilitation 2014. The House of Music is situated by the newly established waterfront in Aalborg and it is being built right at this moment as Aalborg and North Denmark’s new astonishing landmark. Set to be finished in the summer of 2013 we look forward to welcoming the conference participants in these incredible surroundings. The House of Music will be the host of concerts, artistic growth and simultaneously provide the perfect and unique educational and rehearsal setting for Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, the Jutland Academy of Music and Aalborg University. COOP HIMMELB(L)AU with Professor Wolf D. Prix as head of the project is building the House of Music in high architectural quality. We are delighted to offer all participants and accompanying persons this very special welcome to the City of Aalborg.

21

Let's dine under the tree tops Gala dinner at the Robbers' Camp

22

The location of the gala dinner will be the Forest of Rold, the largest forest area in Denmark. For centuries, this area was known as a dubious place for ordinary people to be - especially at night. In the dark, the Rold Robbers would make their move and attack people who, for one reason or the other, had to pass through the forest, which was the only way to get from North to South at that time being. The atmosphere of the past will be recreated when we resurrect the robbers for the participants in order to make a thrilling event with a touch of local Danish history. Coaches will take the participants a short 30-minute drive to the entrance of Rebild National Park. Here robbers greet the participants and walk them through the forest. At a certain point, robbers dressed in old times’ robber-outfits “attack” the participants. The robbers will take the participants (and prisoners) further into the forest and tell them the history of the robbers and the area as such. Afterwards, an exquisite dinner is awaiting the participants under the magnificent treetops. During the dinner, only to be experienced in the region of North Denmark, robber stories and entertainment will keep the participants alert and make the evening unforgettable! In this informal and relaxed atmosphere, the participants will have the perfect opportunity to experience local folklore and become one unique and memorable experience richer.

23

This combined with a compact, lively and charming city centre not only creates a perfect conference infrastructure, but also - and perhaps more importantly - a relaxed and intimate social setting for the participants. The choice of hotels in Aalborg ranges from hostels to the modern and discreet atmosphere of the international chain hotels and classic privately owned hotels.

Just another great incentive - welcome to Scandinavia's number one holiday region

26 32

Being the Danes’ preferred holiday region, North Denmark offers the perfect setting for combining business with pleasure. The region of North Denmark is famous not only for its fabulously rich scenery and the extra hours of sunshine it gets compared with the rest of the country, but also for its unique, varied natural phenomenon of the three seas that meet here to bring their own distinctive appeal to this region of Denmark. This region has the wild and foaming North Sea with its mile-long sandy beaches and vast dune landscapes; the milder and far more tranquil Kattegat to the east, and the wonderful, glittering Limfjord to the south with its wealth of idyllic coves and sounds with large and small islands, sheer cliffs and green forests. In fact, the region boasts more than 2,500 kilometres of coastline, so you’re never more than 30 minutes from the seashore. Don’t miss out on the clashing meeting of two oceans at the very Top of the Continent - it’s a world-class experience! Add to this, a rich choice of fairytale castles, great museums, traditional inns, glass blowers, superb restaurants, intimate seaside resorts and the relaxed and easy-going attitude of the Danes themselves, and you’re well off to a memorable stay at the Top of the Continent. www.visitaalborg.com www.visitnordjylland.dk www.visitdenmark.com

excursions for conference participants and accompanying persons The Vikings founded the city of Aalborg in the 7th century at the narrowest banks of the Lim Fjord. The Viking settlement at ’Lindholm Høje’ just North of Aalborg was extremely influential in the Viking Era’s international trade patterns. Today, ’Lindholm Høje’ is one of Scandinavia’s largest and most beautiful monuments from this proud era in Danish history. In ’Old Aalborg’, trade and wealth have set their mark and many of the old buildings have been preserved as natural elements in the city scene. A special mention must be made of Jens Bang’s House, a five-storeyed Renaissance structure dating from 1624, Jørgen Olufsens Gård from 1616 and the lovely Aalborghus Castle from 1539. Jump straight into modern art and architecture at one of Scandinavia’s most fascinating museums of modern art, KUNSTEN. This great museum was designed by the world-famous, Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and built 1968-72. Aalborg and the surrounding region is rich in exciting history and beautiful nature, so there’s plenty of ideas to make the social dimension of the stay just as exciting as the conference itself!

Golf in Denmark - A real birdie experience! Denmark has often been referred to as “the undiscovered golfer’s paradise” - perhaps because golfing in Denmark is synonymous with recreation and a relaxed atmosphere. Golfing at the Top of the Continent is a real birdie experience. With more than 20 first-class golf courses less than an hour’s drive from the city of Aalborg you’re spoilt for choice. What’s more, in the warm summer months, you can tee off at 8 pm, finish 18 fantastic holes, and still enjoy the sunset over a well-deserved, cold drink at the 19th.

34

All-day tour - The Land of Light (optional) Denmark has the prestigious position as number five on Lonely Planet’s list of Best in Travel 2012 Destinations and Skagen in the North of Denmark is known as one of the top 10 places to put yourself in the picture. This full day tour will take the participants and spouses to some of North Denmark’s most beautiful areas with a unique and fantastic natural setting. The area is named “The Land of Light” due to its many hours of sunshine and the special light that many tourists and artists enjoy every year. Grenen in Skagen is the northernmost point in Denmark and it is the top of the European continent, and here is where the North Sea meets the Baltic Sea.

dunes into the mix and you’ll see why this seaside beauty has been a favorite of artists for centuries.

Wander down its narrow streets, passing by craft shops to pick up handmade gifts. Then it’s on to a restaurant for a simple lunch of fresh fish, crusty bread and a glass of wine. Afterwards, the participants and spouses will get to see Scandinavian art over the centuries at the Skagen Museum. Later on, a visit to the top of the European continent is on the menu and they will get a chance to dip their toes into each ocean, and take a walk along the tip of the European continent at Skagen’s windswept sands before heading back to Aalborg.

Skagen, Denmark’s northernmost town is one of the prettiest in the country. Add extraordinarily clear skies and miles of sand

Evening tour - Meet the witches (optional) Drunkenness and brawls, prostitution and witch burnings were all part of life for the citizens of Aalborg some 400 years ago. The dark past lives again on this tour. A theatre group called “Det Hem’lige Teater” (The Secret Theatre) mixes historical facts, legend and convincing drama to take the guests back to a turbulent time. A guide will lead the guests safely through the tumult, in which actors help recreate the era. They breathe life into some of the historic and infamous events that Aalborg has witnessed through the centuries.

The tour of Aalborg will introduce the guests to the pictoresque city centre. Further, we shall have a look at the beautifully renovated houses in the old streets of the city where we also find workshops for glass-blowing and ceramics. Jens Bang’s famous renaissance stone house and the Monastery of the Holy Ghost are other interesting structures, and last, but not least, the guests will be going underground to visit the Franciscan Friary Museum.

Half day tour - West Coast (optional) First stop on this tour is the North Sea Museum, where guests will get a chance to discover the exciting world of the North Sea at close hand. The museum is also home to the largest aquarium in Northern Europe, where the guests can see large schools of fish from the North Sea swimming around in 4.5 million litres of seawater almost like in open sea. We move on to the small coastal town of Lønstrup - an old, authentic town hosting numerous ateliers for artists practising handicrafts.

Short stop at restaurant ”Villa Vest” with a beautiful sea-view for a cup of coffee. Right outside Lønstrup, we visit the abandoned Mårup Church where they will get a clear impression of the powers of nature. The church is sitting on a hill island created by inland ice during the most recent Ice Age. From Mårup, we continue to Børglum Monastery, which dates back to the 12th century, where they will visit the beautiful church with Romanesque interior.
