Picture This… The creator of Elmer, David McKee, won the prestigious Book Trust Lifetime Achievement Award celebrating his incredible body of work. He said at the time: “Children’s books can contribute to changing attitudes and are instrumental in helping them shape their view of the world.” Here are just a few of the books that have resonated with youngsters across the globe.
Elmer The Elephant has packed his trunk to say ‘hello’ to the seaside! The brightly coloured patchwork elephant is one of the most iconic and widely read children’s book characters of all time – and now he’s set to enjoy life in Blackpool. Thirty large Elmer sculptures inspired by David McKee’s beloved books will be placed at key landmarks, streets, and open spaces across the town for eight weeks. Apart from being great fun to see and providing perfect photo opportunities, the sculptures, which have been uniquely decorated by established and up and coming artists, will serve an important purpose. Each
of them will be sponsored by local businesses and organisations raising vital funds for Brian House Children’s Hospice. The large installations will be joined by a herd of smaller Elmers embellished by local children and young people through schools, colleges and youth organisations and displayed inside some of the town’s tourist, cultural and leisure locations. Elmer’s Big Blackpool Parade has been made possible by a partnership between Trinity Hospice, Wild in Art, and book publishers Andersen Press. Elmer The Patchwork Elephant first appeared in print in 1989 and has been promoting inclusivity and friendship ever since.
More than 30 books featuring the loveable character have been translated into 50 languages selling more than 10 million copies and resonating with youngsters around the world. David McKee, who also created Not Now Bernard and Mr Ben, passed away in 2022 but his messages of compassion and friendship continue to live on for generations through his joyful, heartfelt stories.

1. What, or where, or who, lights up your life? Hah ll the usual stuff whiskers on kittens, my children, my randchildren, and Mrs LLB (particularly if gin has been involved). But one of my biggest seasonal bu es, is that extraordinary moment when Blackpool is instantaneously ooded with coloured li ht just as everywhere else in Britain turns the switch off There s somethin so iconic about bringing light to the early autumn twilight and some of my most cherished memories are from SwitchOns past. 2. Moonlight or sunlight? Depends when and where, but I love a good oldfashioned Harvest Moon in u ust lookin almost Sci fi as it rises over the British countryside. 3. Disco light or candlelight? an t ha e both 4. Seaside or countryside? With all the brouhaha around Switch-On and the lluminations, often wonder whether people don’t actually forget how beautiful Blackpool’s beachscape is. t s a ma nificent chunk of nature that I’m sure Turner would have loved to paint. I actually have plans afoot to try and integrate the beach and the sea into a huge new illumination for 2024/25… Watch this space!
all too often mired in oldfashioned ideas about class or context. In Blackpool desi n has, since the ori inal Victorian foundin fathers, been allowed to just have fun. Blackpool boasts some extraordinarily high-quality design experiences from The Tower Ballroom to the modernist glamour of The White Tower at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The piers are ma nificent, The Winter Gardens always put a spring in my step and as for The Opera House… well WOW! 7. What first attracted you to working with Blackpool Illuminations? One of my first e er obs straight out of art school was designing colourful oor layouts at The Winter Gardens (actually there are bits still there!) That was d ne er been to Blackpool before, and I remember just being so bowled over. In the heyday of Changing Rooms we used to come to the Blackpool area a lot so when the idea of becoming involved with the lluminations came up, I could see how much fun it’d be. That and the fact that once a year something I design is visible from space of course!

Celebrating 85 Years of The Opera House
Eight Lancashire Lads. His only appearance at the Opera House came on 23 May 1904 when he played a Page Boy in a touring production of Sherlock Holmes.
1889
First incarnation In 1889, Her Majesty’s Opera House first graced Blackpool, opening its doors on June 10. Designed by esteemed architect Frank Matcham, this French Renaissance gem, costing £9,098, accommodated 1,500, showcasing a 28ft wide proscenium. Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘The Yeoman of the Guard,’ performed by the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, marked the opening. However, the venue’s décor stole the show. The Blackpool and Fleetwood Gazette praised its Louis XV styled ceiling as a “perfect work of art...its beauties can hardly be described.”
1910 - 11
Remodelling In November 1910, a transformative chapter began for the Opera House. Temporarily closed for renovations by architects Mangnall & Littlewood, the same minds behind the Empress Ballroom, the venue was expanded into a grander spectacle. By August 1911, the revamped Opera House, boasting a 2,300 seat capacity, was unveiled. This renovation also birthed the Winter Gardens’ Renaissance-style white faience Church Street façade.

Before becoming an international star, comic and silent movie icon Charlie Chaplin was a regular in Blackpool, debuting in a twoweek season from 19 June 1889 in the Pavilion Theatre as part of clog-dancing troupe The

The final transformation
14, 1939, the current Opera House boasts the UK’s largest stage, seating 3,000, a cutting-edge cinema system, and the last Wurlitzer Organ commissioned and installed in the UK. The reopening featured George Formby’s revue ‘Turned Out Nice Again’, affirming its status as “Europe’s Most Modern and Beautiful Theatre”.
1950 - 53
Sinatra
The Opera House hosted the iconic Frank Sinatra twice, first on July 16, 1950, and then on July 26, 1953, each visit culminating in two unforgettable concerts. Sinatra was met with overwhelming adulation, akin to a hero’s welcome. His popularity in Blackpool prompted a playful remark overheard by local chauffeur Frank Lucas: “You know, I could be Mayor of this town.”
These visits left a lasting impression, adding to the rich tapestry of the Opera House’s history.
1955
First RV performance On April 13, 1955, the Opera House Blackpool made history by hosting the first Royal Variety Performance outside London, attended by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. The stellar line-up featured comedic gems Morecambe and Wise, Arthur Askey, and distinguished talents such as Alma Colgan and George Formby. Adding a signature touch to the event, organist Reginald Dixon played ‘I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside’ on the Wurlitzer, adding a unique charm to this remarkable occasion.

RVP returns after 5 decades
In a significant return after five decades, the Royal Variety Performance graced the Opera House Blackpool once again on December 7, 2009. This historic occasion, attended by Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh, showcased a dazzling array of talent. Host Peter Kay led an evening filled with
performances by luminaries such as Miley Cyrus, Whoopi Goldberg, Michael Bublé, André Rieu, Lady Gaga, and the iconic Bette Midler, etching another unforgettable chapter in the theatre’s rich history.
2014
Summer season returns In 2010, Blackpool Council’s acquisition of Winter Gardens sparked a new era of investment in the Opera House. The vision was to reinstate the venue as a hub for major touring shows and summer seasons. This dream came to life in 2014 when the global hit Mamma Mia! staged a 12-week run, breaking box office records with over £2 million in sales within the first six weeks, and selling over 100,000 tickets. The musical drew visitors nationwide, heralding a resounding triumph in the Opera House’s history.

In 2022, the acclaimed production welcomed an impressive crowd of over 18,000 across its five-day run, breaking through the £500k barrier for the first time in the venue’s history for a one-week show.
