BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS

FRIDAY 29 AUGUST, 2025 –SUNDAY 4 JANUARY, 2026 (TBC)

It’s more than 140 years since the pioneers of electrical lighting created the spectacle that was to become the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations. In those early days, it was just eight arc lamps that left visitors awe-struck by what they perceived to be “artificial sunshine”. Fast forward to 2025 and there are now more than a million LEDs bathing the entire Promenade in a sea of light from September to January. Rumour has it you can see them from outer space! Times might change, but the one constant down the ages, is the Illuminations have lost none of that early magic.

NOT SO SCARY SPICE!

Our 2024 Illuminations Switch-On star, Mel B, rose to global fame in the 90s as a member of the Spice Girls in which she earned the nickname Scary Spice. With more than 100 million records sold worldwide, they became the best-selling female group of all time.

She has since gone on to work as a solo singersongwriter, TV personality and actress, working on numerous shows in the UK, Australia and the United States.

Last year, she received an honorary doctorate from Leeds Beckett University, which recognised the star for her work with domestic abuse victims and her global influence as “a music icon”. Mel – who is patron of Women’s Aid - was also made an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours list for her charitable work.

Here Mel explains why Blackpool is so special to her.

Why I Love Blackpool

“Blackpool has played a big part in my life and career.

“I was just 16 when I came to Blackpool to be part of the Mystique dance group. To me it was the most glamorous place in the world - the Vegas of Britain.

“I had so much to learn, so fast and it stood me in good stead for everything that came later.”

My Favourite Blackpool Moment

“To have the opportunity in 2024 to come back and turn on the Illuminations means so much to me. I was so thrilled because Blackpool has played a big part in my life and career.”

The Best Thing To Do In Blackpool

“I love the people, the place and of course the fish and chips - with plenty of scraps.”

Light Around The World created by Leigh Francis for Blackpool Illuminations

WORLD FIREWORKS CHAMPIONSHIP BLACKPOOL

Watch in awe as internationally acclaimed pyrotechnic experts from across the globe head to Blackpool to light up the night skies above the Irish Sea. Tens of thousands of spectators gather on the Tower Festival Headland to be thrilled by intricately choreographed firework displays perfectly synced to music as the teams battle it out for the coveted

championship title. Sparks will fly again in 2025 as three new teams bring the latest technology and innovation to the seafront, to be greeted by the sound of gasps, roars and rapturous applause. These are heart-lifting, dazzling displays that are not to be missed.

Experience the rhythm of Blackpool during the Capital of Dance festival, a month-long celebration of our unparalleled dance heritage. The town will come alive with the world’s first fringe festival dedicated to dance and movement.

Blackpool’s dance legacy stretches back to the Victorian era when revellers twirled on the piers to the sounds of the sea. It continued through the Big Band era, filling the iconic Blackpool Tower and Empress Ballrooms with swinging melodies and fancy footwork.

Our variety theatres showcased dazzling showgirls while the pulsating beats of Northern Soul, disco and dance superclubs later set the town alight. Today, Blackpool hosts over 50 national and international dance competitions annually, cementing its status as the ultimate destination for dance enthusiasts.

Throughout July, immerse yourself in a whirlwind of workshops, social dancing, themed events and unforgettable parties. From free outdoor performances to ticketed spectacles, there’s something for everyone. Dance under the summer sun on the Comedy Carpet, with the majestic Blackpool Tower as your backdrop.

Families can delight in shows featuring dance of all genres, physical theatre, and movement suitable for all ages, from toddlers to grandparents. From Hip Hop to Ice Dance, Latin to Ballet, and Country Two-Step to Swing, the festival showcases a vibrant array of dance genres for everyone to enjoy!

As Strictly contestants dream of “making it to Blackpool”, you too can be part of the town’s magical dance experience. Visit capitalofdance.com and sign up for more information.

TUE 20 MAY TO SAT 24 MAY

WED 04 JUN TO SAT 14 JUN

HIGH FLYING CELEBRATION!

The British Homing World Show of the Year is one of the largest pigeon weekends across the globe and 2026 will mark the 50th anniversary of it first being staged in Blackpool.

The two-day event held every January at the Winter Gardens attracts around 10,000 visitors. It is the highlight of the year for

pigeon fanciers, who come from all over the world to showcase their birds as part of an historic community celebration.

The show dates back to 1973 when it was first held at Doncaster Racecourse. It continued to be staged there until 1977 when it was decided a bigger venue was needed and relocated to Blackpool, where it has remained ever since.

During its history, the show has developed the concept of the Supreme Champion - a competition to judge the best

pigeons from the biggest shows in the UK and Ireland - and become recognised as the largest event of its kind in Europe.

Down the years, it has brought significant positive publicity for pigeon racing, having featured regularly on radio and television and attracted international, national and local press.

The 2026 show will see 37 classes of racing pigeons, plus a separate show exhibiting fancy breeds. There will be up to 100 trade stands, charity pigeon auctions and raffles, as well

as the showing and judging of over 1,700 of the top homing pigeons in the UK before a Gala Evening finale at Viva Blackpool.

The special anniversary show will take place on 17 and 18 January 2026.

Jog along the beach, take a bicycle ride through the park or simply take time out for a leisurely stroll along the prom.

It’s time to fall in love with the great outdoors…

SEVENTH HEAVEN

Stretching seven miles along the Fylde Coast, Blackpool seafront is enjoyed by millions of visitors every year. The promenade makes up the North, Central and South Shores and is most renowned for the Golden Mile, home to a multitude of year-round, familyfriendly events, activities and attractions including the iconic Blackpool Tower.

Be sure to check out The Great Promenade Show at South Beach. Some of the country’s top artists and designers have created two kilometres of installations and sculptures, including the ever-popular giant Mirror Ball.

SANDY SHORE

The sun on your face or the wind in your hair, it really doesn’t matter when you’ve got the feel of soft, clean sand between your toes.

Our beaches have won awards and, when you’re relaxing, gazing out across the Irish Sea and breathing in the crisp, fresh, salty air, it’s easy to see why. Build a sandcastle, go for a paddle, take a selfie, or hire a deckchair and just sit and be in the moment. The great outdoors doesn’t get any better than this.

PARK LIFE

Award-winning Stanley Park is a Grade II listed, 390acre haven of peace and tranquility. It’s gorgeous all year round – bursting with beautiful plants in the picture-perfect spring and summer seasons, and a glorious backdrop of red, orange, and gold foliage for an autumn or winter walk. It opens its magnificent wrought iron gates between dawn and dusk every day offering a world away from the hustle and bustle of Blackpool seafront. It’s a great place to saunter round, offering a magical blend of architecture, horticulture, and recreation, and so will keep all ages occupied for hours.

Known across the land for its bandstand, boating lake and Italian gardens, the park is split into zones - the north and western formal gardens; the eastern area lake and woodland area; and the south stretch containing children’s play areas and sports facilities.

LITTLE TREASURE

Good things come in little packages at Blackpool Model Village and Gardens which adjoin Stanley Park. There are hundreds of hand-crafted miniature village scenes to marvel at as you wander through

more than two acres of carefully landscaped grounds featuring paved pathways that provide full access for all visitors.

Miniature scenarios include a Scottish Castle protected by ranks of Guardsmen, a quaint Cornish fishing town, a Tudor village where diminutive residents enjoy a cricket match on the village green, and a model railway featuring Thomas the Tank engine, Annie and Clarabel.

Facilities include a café and ice cream parlour, gift shop, baby changing provision, and disability access including availability of a wheelchair and motorised scooter.

PIER PARADE

Fancy a stroll along a traditional pier? In Blackpool you have three Victorian Piers to choose from: North, Central, and South, each one boasting unique features that make up our seaside heritage.

Start your stroll at North Pier, which is the oldest of the three. Then, at your leisure, walk the Golden Mile towards Central Pier, finishing at South Pier. The walk from North to South is around 1.6miles and will take around 35 minutes (excluding time on the piers). At which point, you’ve earned a welldeserved sit down!

Learn, Enjoy and Discover with over 1,000 animals at Blackpool Zoo!

Blackpool Zoo is a mustsee attraction in Britain’s favourite seaside resort. With more than 1000 mesmerising animals in over 37 acres of stunning, spacious parkland you will find a haven of peace and tranquility and a fun day out for the entire family!

As well as coming face to face with some of the most endangered species on the planet, you can find out about how our conservation and research projects are helping animals across the globe.

From aardvarks to anteaters, Bactrian camels to Bornean orangutans, penguins to pelicans, elephants to emus and marmosets to meerkats (to name just a few) our residents come in all shapes and sizes. Learn all there is to know about the animal kingdom as you explore the zoo and, with babies arriving all year-round, there’s always someone new to meet.

Your zoo journey starts 230 million years ago as you

make your way into the Dinosaur Safari. Come face to face with the terrifying tyrannosaurus rex, mighty marine reptiles, awesome pterodactyls and more than 30 other stunning prehistoric creatures - some of which are animatronic!

Wander past an erupting volcano, take in the views around the lake and pose for a picture next to our living curtain of water. Ultra-realistic sound effects and thousands of authentic living plants and trees that date back to the days

of the dinosaur bring the prehistoric world vividly to life.

The latest in a long line of significant investments in Blackpool Zoo is its new Big Cat Habitat, which opened in 2023. The stateof-the-art enclosure is home to two majestic Amur tigers and a breeding group of three African lions. As you meander along the picturesque pathways, you can catch glimpses of these (p)awe-inspiring creatures, marvelling at their grace and power.

Project Elephant Base Camp is a huge outdoor space with rolling grass paddocks, a sanded area and a large, deep pool which all contribute to the highest standards of care and welfare for the resident herd of Asian elephants. Enjoy panoramic views from the raised and ground level walkways and learn about the magnificent species as you immerse yourself in an Asia inspired adventure.

Active Oceans invites you to find out about Californian sea lions and Magellanic

penguins, both of which spend their days swimming in clear blue waters or soaking up the sun on land. Blackpool Zoo is home to one of the biggest sea lion pools in the UK and you won’t find Magellanic penguins anywhere else in Britain.

Spring 2024 saw the safe arrival of critically endangered Bornean orangutan baby, Rufus, to proud parents Summer and Kawan. Rufus was named in honour of an organisation that supports children affected by an acute and chronic medical condition.

Blackpool Zoo is home to the only family of gorillas in the North of England, so make sure that meeting them is on your Blackpool Zoo to do list!

You can get close to a myriad of animals in walk-through exhibits including Lemur Wood, Wallaby Walkabout, World of Wings and Rainbow

Landings and, if you’re looking for some peace and serenity, why not head to a quieter corner of the zoo and learn about our lesser-known animals such as the beautiful red pandas or fascinating anteaters.

With education, conservation and research at the very heart of all we do, you can enjoy a packed schedule of talks, feeds and demonstrations.

When it comes to feeding time at the zoo, we have every taste bud covered! Enjoy a tasty meal or snack from our Lakeview Café Food Court or grab a sandwich in the first Subway to open in a UK zoo. The Playbarn is a great addition to your day, or just bring the kids along for a run around and loads of fun! With three huge levels, giant slides, ball cannons and a dedicated toddler area, it’s

sure to burn off their excess energy! Oh, and don’t forget to buy your zoo-venirs in the gift shop on the way out!

Share your memories with your family and friends and keep up to date with all the latest news on the zoo’s social media channels.

Blackpool Zoo is open every day from 10.00 am. (except Christmas Day)

Inspiring YOUNG MINDS

ALL BLING, NO STING!

The mere sight of a jellyfish is normally enough to make people run a mile. But for one group of children it was a different tale.

Pupils at the resort’s Kincraig Primary spent hours studying the much-maligned creatures at SEA LIFE Blackpool before turning their hand to designing their own Medusae jellyfish.

Their work was presented to the talented technical team at Lightworks – the home of Blackpool Illuminations –who were able to design a spectacular interactive light installation for the annual Lightpool Festival.

The children were invited back to Lightworks to see at first hand the results of their creative imaginations, filmed by BBC’s The One Show.

OUT OF THIS WORLD!

Blackpool Illuminations are out of this world… quite literally!

A new overhead roadway section that pays homage to the hugely popular Aliens feature that graced the display several years ago, is all down to the creativity of local students.

The section featuring 10 individual illustrations of extra-terrestrial life has been designed by students at Blackpool Sixth Form.

Laura Goodinson, Assistant Head of Visual Arts at Blackpool Sixth, said: “It was such an honour to have been considered to create artwork for the Illuminations team. Even more so when we heard Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen had judged the work and

chosen nine of our students’ art pieces, eight of whom were Lower Sixth.

“The BTEC art and design students are thrilled to have had the opportunity to get involved in a prestigious project like this one and are extremely excited to see the future developments.

“Live brief projects like this help mould and shape our young people into innovative and confident individuals.”

WORK, REST

and Play!

Blackpool is not just the perfect destination to escape to in pursuit of rest and recreation.

Textile students from The Grange School in Hartford, Cheshire, came to the resort for an exciting educational challenge.

They were invited to The Blackpool Tower Ballroom by Gemma Alderson, Creative Lead and Studio Manager for VisitBlackpool.

Without any previous indication of what they were going to be asked to do, the students were given a live brief and tasked with designing and creating a silk scarf celebrating all things Blackpool.

They were given four themes to consider – beach memorabilia; architecture; typography; and Blackpool through the ages.

In unveiling the assignment, Gemma provided the pupils with lots of helpful tips and background knowledge of places they could visit to gather photographs and inspiration.

As part of the project, the GCSE students were required to explore the town, researching and recording images outlining their thought process before finally designing their unique Blackpool-inspired silk scarf.

The students explored The Tower Ballroom, the piers, beach, arcades, fish and chip shops and The Comedy Carpet, eagerly collecting ideas to support their design work in order to celebrate everything that Blackpool has to offer.

But one in particular stood out – the work of Katie Round (pictured above).

Gemma, who was given the difficult task of shortlisting three of the scarves said: “I was given all of the supporting research and sketch-book work to look through and Katie Round’s work was outstanding.”

Well done Katie!

The scarves were part of the girls’ GCSE coursework and were presented as part of an in-house exhibition at the school with some remaining on permanent display.

Sketch-book

Judging the competition was no easy feat for Gemma. The talented students were – quite literally – neck and neck when it came to their beautiful scarves. Although Katie was voted the winner of the design challenge, students Laurel McCarthy and Devon Phillips-Kayes were announced worthy runners-up for their incredible creations pictured left and right.

A CHOICE FOR EVERYBODY

Over the last few years, Blackpool has warmly welcomed a number of new international hotel brands to the resort.

These hotels enhance our overall accommodation offer and sit alongside a busy and thriving B&B sector, the mainstay of any seaside resort.

The perception of the traditional guesthouse landlady has long become outdated. These days, many of them reside over modern and luxurious properties that aspire to the resort’s ongoing regeneration by offering a personal and bespoke experience to visitors to Blackpool.

To complement that approach, VisitBlackpool only supports properties (regardless of size) that have a nationally recognised accreditation.

Both national schemes (VisitEngland & AA) and our own Blackpool Approved Scheme are there to reassure our visitors that their stay will be in a property that is keen to show the quality and attention to detail that national accreditation standards demand.

For your next holiday, short break or overnight stay we encourage you to take a look at the wider resort offer; we are sure you will find a property that exceeds your expectations, meets your budget and offers that very special and renowned Blackpool welcome.

MAKING THE GOING EASY

There is more than one way to get to your favourite beach resort! Trains, planes or automobiles is the catchphrase - but have you ever thought of taking it easy and letting somebody else take the strain? Coach travel could be the answer!

The coach industry has been bringing guests to Blackpool for more than a century. The old charabancs used to travel from all corners of the UK, bringing guests via bumpy dirt tracks to the coast for our famous fresh sea air.

Luckily, coach travel has moved on and now offers passengers a seamless transition from your doorstep to ours!

These days, luxury coach travel offers comfortable seating, refreshments, toilet facilities, stop offs so you can stretch your legs, WiFi and assistance should you need it.

It is estimated that at least 90 coaches can arrive in Blackpool on a typical day, bringing up to 4,500 visitors. In recognition of its support for the coach industry, Blackpool has been granted Coach Friendly status.

Check out your local coach provider or travel agent to ask about short breaks or day trips to Blackpool!

In The Spotlight

The world-famous Blackpool Illuminations display has won a top accolade in a national travel awards scheme. The annual display, which attracts millions of visitors to the resort during the autumn and winter months – many of them by coach - was voted Best Event For Groups in the Group Leisure and Travel Awards. The winners were voted for by readers of Group Leisure & Travel, Britain’s best-read magazine for people who organise group trips and holidays.

EV Charging

Blackpool is a destination that strives to put sustainable travel at the heart of the

town. With its accessible tram system, walkable and bike-friendly promenade, and soon-to-arrive electric buses, getting around Blackpool is both convenient and ecofriendly.

We also want our visitors to be able to get to Blackpool sustainably from anywhere in the UK. Whilst our train station is connected to all major destinations in the UK, for those arriving via private car, the town is ready to support the shift to electric vehicles through our electric vehicle charging network.

Blackpool offers a network of both rapid and fast electric vehicle chargers to suit all needs. Visiting for the day? Park your car at one of our convenient fast chargers, so it’s ready for your journey home after a day of fun at the beach. Need a quick charge after an evening show at the

Winter Gardens? Our network of rapid chargers provides the boost you need to get home with ease.

With a growing network of over 40 charging locations, drivers have the flexibility to choose where and with whom they charge. Blackpool Council is constantly expanding its network across council-owned car parks in the town centre. This includes the newly opened Blackpool Central Multi-Storey car park in the heart of Blackpool, which offers 26 fast chargers and one rapid charger.

For a full list of charging locations available in Blackpool, please visit ZAPMap

ACCESS ALL AREAS

There’s a warm welcome for everyone here in Blackpool. We pride ourselves on being one of the most accessible towns in the country, whether you have physical, sensory, mental health or learning difficulties.

We work very closely with AccessAble to provide detailed, accurate information to support all visitors. There are Access Guides available for hundreds of venues including The Blackpool Tower, Madame Tussauds, Pleasure Beach, the Comedy Carpet, and the Winter Gardens so that anyone visiting the resort can find out in advance if a setting is going to be easy to navigate and enjoy.

They include photographs and maps, and detail such things as ease of access from outside, lifts and lighting, change in levels, car parking spaces, accessible toilets and changing facilities as well as the availability of devices such as hearing loops.

The guides are also designed to help others with access needs, such as parents with prams or the elderly needing to know more about walking distances or areas to rest. To find out more, go to accessable.co.uk or visitblackpool.com

We’re proud to have one of the UK’s most accessible venues here in the resort. The Sandcastle Waterpark is one of just two visitor attractions in the North West to receive a VisitEngland Gold Award for going the extra mile. It provides a wide and varied range of facilities for guests with disabilities and additional needs, including a poolside wet room with H-track hoist, Induction hearing loops throughout the building, and a quiet sensory room.

Many establishments in our accommodation sector take part in the National Accessible Scheme enabling a comfortable stay for guests with hearing, visual or mobility needs.

These places are full of extra touches to ensure a troublefree holiday. These might include handrails, ramps, and step-free entrances (ideal for wheelchairs, walking frames and buggies), level access showers and colour contrasts in the bathrooms. Further information can be found on the VisitEngland website.
