Welcome to the home of remarkable things

Welcome to

Blackpoo l With award-winning attractions, amazing free events, wonderful beaches, a year-round programme of top-class shows and entertainment, and a range of accommodation to suit all pockets, it’s no wonder that Blackpool is the UK’s favourite beach resort.

T

here is so much to do, so much to see and so much to enjoy – the challenge is how you find the time to fit it all in!

2018 saw the opening of more than £20m of new visitor attractions including ICON, the incredible new rollercoaster at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, as well as a spectacular new elephant house at Blackpool Zoo, and brilliant new arrivals at Madame Tussaud’s including Marvel Comics super-heroes. It also saw the launch of the first of Blackpool’s “next generation” hotels in the shape of the Hampton by Hilton at South Beach and the long-awaited electrification of the main rail line into Blackpool, opening up the resort to direct connections throughout the UK.

2019 will see the opening of BLVD, a stylish new hotel at Blackpool Pleasure Beach and with Blackpool’s first five-star hotel, the Sands Venue Resort, under construction on the Golden Mile, there has never been a better time to take an extended break. All of this investment is part of an ongoing regeneration of Blackpool that has already

resulted in the creation of a stunning new-look Promenade; a contemporary fleet of trams that run alongside the iconic heritage trams; and the revitalisation of major attractions such as the Winter Gardens and the world-famous Illuminations. The coming year will see the 125th anniversary of two of our most iconic heritage assets – The Blackpool Tower and The Grand Theatre. There will be an exciting programme of events to celebrate these birthdays – so don’t miss out on the opportunity to take a peek inside two of the wonders of the world of entertainment. Throughout this guide you will see for yourself how the many wonderful changes have created a perfect blend of Blackpool’s marvellous heritage with a new generation of free and paid for events and attractions to create the ultimate family resort. You will also see within these pages some of the extraordinary things that make Blackpool such a special place. But don’t just take our word for it – pack your bag, come on over and take a fresh look at the home of seaside fun.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2019

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2019

BLACKPOOL WHATS NEW FOR 2019

The one thing we guarantee – there is never a dull moment in Blackpool! Year after year, the range of attractions just gets bigger and better.

2018 saw the launch of ICON, the amazing new rollercoaster at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. If you haven’t tried it yet, what are you waiting for? It’s the smoothest, fastest, slickest coaster you will ever experience! For 2019, you will be able to enjoy another high-profile character at Madame Tussauds in the form of the new Dr Who. Following on from the opening of the new Hampton by Hilton hotel at South Beach in 2018, there is a new hotel development at Blackpool Pleasure Beach and there is a whole raft of new shows and events to enjoy in the entertainment capital of the UK.

DR WHO

Trust us, you don’t have to be a fanatical Whoover to enjoy the latest installation at Madame Tussauds. It features a remarkably lifelike figure of Jodie Whittaker as the programme’s first ever woman doctor. With a set featuring the famous Tardis, prepare to be transported to another world.

Here’s just a flavour of the new things in store for 2019:

COOL & EDGY EATS The Wok Inn

Blackpool isn’t just about fish and chips and ice cream (although to be fair we do those things better than most!). There is also an impressive range of bistros, cafes, restaurants and bars to suit all pockets and tastes. Here are just two new additions to whet your appetite:

Creams

Budapest “ruin bar” meets Penang hawker market in a seaside noodle bar. Got the picture? No? That’s because it’s never been done before! This quirkily fitted out restaurant is almost opposite North Pier and offer a brilliant mix of authentic dishes and modern design.

Situated just a hop, skip and a jump from Central Promenade, this has already become a dessert-lovers’ paradise. There is a mouth-watering selection of sundaes, waffles, gelato and puddings in a stylish setting.

THE HOME OF REMARKABLE THINGS

THE HOME OF REMARKABLE THINGS

B

lackpool is renowned for being the home of some of the UK’s most iconic leisure attractions. The Blackpool Tower and Circus, the world-famous Pleasure Beach, the Winter Gardens, Grand Theatre, Golden Mile, three piers….and so the list goes on. But every year the resort conjures up a range of remarkable one-off events that create a true “wow factor” for our visitors. For example, the past 12 months has seen: Light Odyssey, an extraordinary sound and light collaboration with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and 15 animators from across the globe who transformed the interior of the Empress Ballroom. Luke Jerram’s Museum Of The Moon, an incredible replica moon that was installed in the beautiful Tower Ballroom creating an unforgettable opportunity for people to dance under the moonlight. Pages Of The Sea, a poignant Armistice Day tribute to the victims of the First World War with a large-scale portrait of a soldier etched in the sand and then washed away by the tide. These are just some of the amazing things that bring people back to Blackpool time and time again. 125 YEAR CELEBRATION

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Two of Blackpool’s Grande Dames will celebrate a major milestone in 2019 – the 125th anniversary of their opening to the public. 20 | visitblackpool.com

125 T

he Blackpool Tower, one of the UK’s most recognisable and beloved landmarks, opened on May 14, 1894, and has since provided more than a century of magical memories to millions of families from all over the world.

Over the past 125 years, it has hosted some of the biggest names in entertainment from the likes of Lily Langtry and Sarah Bernhardt at the turn of the last century to Sir Ian McKellen who will grace the stage during this anniversary year.

It was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, but given that the Blackpool version also has a circus and magnificent ballroom, we think our version is way more fun! Who, for example, has never played the “first to spot The Blackpool Tower” game as you approach the resort?

Hailed as Matcham’s masterpiece, the Victorian auditorium has incredibly ornate, gilded plasterwork, baroque ceiling and cantilevered balconies that provide a perfect view of the stage from every seat.

To mark the historic milestone, The Blackpool Tower – now operated by Merlin Entertainments – will be holding a year-long programme of celebratory events from May 2019 onwards. The nearby Grand Theatre was designed by Frank Matcham, the leading theatre architect of the day, and built at a cost of £20,000.

Image: Gregg Wolstenholme @wolstenholmepic

The theatre opened on July 23, 1894, with a production of Hamlet, with the programme printed on pure silk and perfumed with “Tower Bouquet”, created by a nearby chemist.

The building was almost lost to redevelopment in the 1970s but rescued by a charitable trust that continues to operate it to this day. The Grand now has an all-year round programme with a delightful mix of dance, drama, comedy, opera and music. Watch out for details of the Grand’s 125th celebrations throughout 2019. Go to the visitblackpool.com website for updates on both The Blackpool Tower and the Grand Theatre anniversary programmes.

TODDLER TIME

TODDLER TIME

Blackpool is a wonderful playground for adults and children of all ages. Many of our attractions are deliberately designed to be ultra child-friendly. Here is a VisitBlackpool guide for parents so they can get the very best out of the resort’s attractions with their young children.

This is a wonderful day out, come rain or shine. Although the indoor waterpark has some white-knuckle chutes to captivate older children, there is plenty in store for younger children to make it a perfect family destination. Treetop Chutes is a colourful set of three small slides where parents and children can play together and little ones will love splashing about at the Caribbean Storm Treehouse. The award-winning Sandcastle prides itself on being accessible to all and it caters brilliantly for families with young children with family changing rooms, nappy changing facilities throughout the waterpark, a choice of children’s meals and a shop where you can purchase swim nappies, vests and armbands.

2 BLACKPOOL MODEL VILLAGE & STANLEY PARK 24 | visitblackpool.com

1

SANDCASTLE WATERPARK

The perfect little place for the little ones! Blackpool Model Village is a fascinating world for young children. It’s easily accessible with a buggy in tow or for toddlers who are just finding their feet. It’s a safe environment with hundreds of creative village scenes to spark children’s imaginations, ranging from a Scottish castle to a Cornish fishing village. New buildings are added every season and there is a working train running through the shopping centre of the main village. And after all that exploring, there is Anita’s, a lovely ice cream parlour where you can relax. The Model Village sits within Stanley Park, voted the UK’s best park last year. The park is a great place for a picnic with wide open spaces, play areas and a boating lake.

TODDLER TIME

This is a great place for young children to get up close and personal with a vast assortment of sea creatures.

SEA LIFE BLACKPOOL

There are plenty of hands-on opportunities where children are allowed to touch some of the creatures and they will be mesmerised by the illuminated presentation tanks with exotic fishes straight out of a Finding Nemo film. Changing facilities can be found in both male and female toilets and can be accessed half way around the walk-through attraction. Facilities also include a soft play area and guests are welcome to take along packed lunches.

3 There is no shortage of things to do for children of all ages in the resort’s biggest amusement park. Make a beeline for Nickelodeon Land which is beautifully presented and the vivid colours on the various rides and attractions are a visual feast for young children.

4

BLACKPOOL PLEASURE BEACH

A wonderful day out for small children giving them a chance to explore the animal kingdom in the safe surrounds of acres of parkland. Apart from the hundreds of animals, there are great play areas and plenty of grassy areas for youngsters to run free. Many exhibits are designed to help children get up close and they are actively encouraged to sit on the floor in front of the glass panel to get the best view of the excellent Sea Lion Show. The zoo has plenty of places to eat with children’s menu options and you are also welcome to take along a picnic. Baby changing areas are available and all areas are accessible with a buggy. Buggies can also be hired on site for a small fee.

Rides such as the enchanting Dora’s World Voyage are the perfect introduction for first-timers to experience the magic of a theme park. There are also areas to explore such as Bradley and Bella’s Learning Garden, guest appearances by Nickelodeon costume characters, and children aged two and under eat free with a paying adult at the Big Pizza Kitchen. Nappy dispensing machines are available throughout the park and in some of the souvenir shops.

24 HOURS IN BLACKPOOL

24hrs IN BLACKPOOL

Blackpool is the home of a vast range of things to see and do. Your challenge is how you make the most of 24 hours in this vibrant capital of fun. Here’s a few suggested itineraries to help you make the most of your time:

YOUNG COUPLES What better way to blow away those cobwebs with a trip to what is billed as the most ride-intensive theme park on the planet – Blackpool Pleasure Beach! Last year saw the launch of the incredible ICON rollercoaster - £16m of space age technology that will have you looping, spinning and hurtling at high speed on what will probably be the slickest ride of your life. With so many rides packed into the park, you won’t need to waste any time hiking from one to another. When the park closes, jump on a tram and head to the famous Golden Mile. Madame Tussauds is the place for a fix of celebrities and selfies. It’s a fully immersive attraction that gives you the opportunity to star in TV shows, have a drink in the Rovers Return, and hang out with some of the best known faces in showbiz. After that, take a quick walk down the Promenade and try out one of the new additions to Blackpool’s eating out scene – the Wok Inn with its heady mix of authentic street food and eclectic design. That probably leaves you just enough time to enjoy what Blackpool does so well – after dark entertainment. Check out Home and HQ, a plush and classy venue with cocktail bars, extraordinary lighting and the coolest music vibe in town. The next day, get up early and take a stroll down one of three piers but leave time for one last thrill – a trip to the top of The Blackpool Tower. Dare you step on to the glass floor at the very top?

Start your day at the Tower Festival Headland with a stroll down the beautifully remodelled Promenade and take in the delights of the Comedy Carpet, one of the largest outdoor public artworks in the UK showcasing the quips, catchphrases and jokes of comedians down the ages.

Start off with a hair-raising trip into The Blackpool Tower Dungeon within The Blackpool Tower. It brings together an amazing cast of actors, special effects, an awesome drop ride and 1000 years of history. It’s funny and scary in equal parts.

After that, go get a Strictly fix. If you have only ever seen the famous Tower Ballroom on TV, then you haven’t had the full, jaw-dropping experience of walking into the most magnificent dance venue in the world. Order a traditional afternoon tea, sit back and soak in the atmosphere of a place where a million romances have been made. As evening falls, take in a show. There’s a huge range of first-class venues including the Opera House, Grand Theatre and Viva Blackpool where you can choose from musicals, dance, concerts and cabaret. Then head for the Beach House Bistro & Bar. It’s situated just yards away from the sea and as darkness falls there is no better place for a memorable meal. The next morning why not take in one of Blackpool’s hidden gems? The Grundy Art Gallery features some brilliant exhibitions and it’s free to access. That should give you just enough time to sample one of Blackpool’s truly great institutions – Notarianni’s ice-cream parlour at South Beach which has been delighting visitors for a century with its no-nonsense, vanilla ice cream. Why only vanilla? Taste this secret family recipe and see for yourself.

Then take a short walk to Madame Tussauds to check out the two latest additions to this celebrity-filled attraction – Dr Who and the Marvel Comics superheroes - Thor, Spiderman, Iron Man, the Hulk and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Once your teens are all selfied out, head back down the Promenade (calling in at Coral Island to experience the ultimate seaside amusement centre) and stop for a late lunch in Harry Ramsden’s at The Blackpool Tower. It’s a fish and chip restaurant with a seaside twist. While you are in the vicinity, don’t miss the chance to take in the famous Blackpool Tower Circus. It’s a thrill-a-minute show with death-defying acts from all over the world, complemented by the lovable antics of resident clowns Mooky and Mr Boo and a dazzling water finale. As the sun goes down, head over to Central Pier to enjoy some pure, unadulterated seaside entertainment. The next morning take in a round of American-style adventure golf at South Beach (Note to dad: Try not to be too competitive!) and then cross over to South Pier to try out some of the exhilarating rides high above the Irish Sea in the Adrenaline Zone. Then as you set off home you can start to plan your next visit. Only this time, why not make it 48 hours?

BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS & LIGHTPOOL

BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS & LIGHTPOOL THE ILLUMINATIONS HAVE LIT UP THE NIGHT SKIES OVER

T

BLACKPOOL FOR WELL OVER A CENTURY.

he hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights along the seafront stretch from Starr Gate to Bispham, creating a magical spectacle that has been enjoyed by generation after generation.

Lasting 66 nights at a time when most seaside resorts are battening down the hatches for winter, the Blackpool Illuminations are one of the UK’s most enduring and bestloved attractions. But today’s Illuminations display offers so much more than the traditional “drive through” experience. There are other ways you can enjoy this magnificent free spectacle such as a ride on a tram or why not take the opportunity to go through the lights on foot? It’s a unique experience and it will give you the opportunity to see up close the famous tableaux, our amazing illuminated trams and the high-tech Lightpool projection shows on the front of The Blackpool Tower building. Every year, we add new sections and features to the Illuminations. 2018 saw the introduction of circus-themed festoons to celebrate Blackpool’s designation as a City Of Circus and a kaleidoscope of colours in the choreographed Crazy Lights section.

BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS & LIGHTPOOL

Lightpool at Blackpool Illuminations is a relatively new addition to the traditional seafront display. This programme of sound and light projection shows utilises the most up-to-date technology to bring to life the front of The Blackpool Tower building. The free shows transform The Tower frontage into a sea of light and colour as stunning, digitally-mapped multi-media shows are projected on to this iconic building. There are several space-themed shows: “Down The Rabbit Hole” portrays an astronaut exploring new worlds and “Chasing Stars”, featuring astronaut Tim Peake, takes visitors on an inspirational galactic tour. A third show, “Enchanted Blackpool”, has been created by Illuminations curator Laurence Llewelyn Bowen and his daughter, Cecile. This magical production brings The

Blackpool Tower to life through a series of characters and a fairy-tale storyline. In 2018, two new additional shows were added to the programme – one showcasing all the fun of the circus and the other a 70th birthday celebration of the UK’s most famous glove puppet, Sooty. The Sooty show, which was produced in association with his new “owner”, Richard Cadell, features all the characters from his TV show and is a must-see for the youngsters in your family (as well as those who were youngsters when Sooty first found fame all those years ago!). Watch out too for details of special live family entertainment on the Tower Festival Headland throughout the Illuminations season.
