Initially built between the 14th and 16th centuries as open chapel, it became the entrance to the cemetery after 1471, and subsequently it was completely enclosed and decorated. Among the frescoes, the Crucifixion is attributed to the school of Pietro da Cemmo. Nearby, the bridge designed by Francesco Cifrondi in 1686 is worth a visit.

CHIESA S. MARIA ASSUNTA (CHURCH)
TOWN OF BIENNO
Easily identifiable thanks to its sleek bell tower, it was built back in the 6th and 7th centuries and rebuilt in the 15th century. It contains one of the most charming and best preserved painting cycles in Camonica Valley, with frescoes made by Giovanni Pietro da Cemmo and his school from 1491 to 1493. The façade is in Late Baroque style (1776).
The historic centre preserves its medieval aspect, with crenellated towers, old houses with loggias and stone gates, a water-powered mill, and the old iron furnaces where it is still possible to see the 17th century forges at work. The town is one of the “Most beautiful small towns in Italy.”

ROMAN CAMONICA VALLEY
SANTUARIO DI MINERVA (SHRINE)
What was called “Civitas Camunnorum” under the Romans still has several sites with important testimonies to its illustrious past. The old theatre quarter is represented by the remains of the theatre and amphitheatre in the Archaeological Park. The extremely rare statue of Minerva and a “naked hero” are the highlights of the National Archaeological Museum.
This is an old Roman religious site dedicated to goddess Minerva, built over an even older shrine built to honour water in the river and the springs. The original statue that was found here is displayed in the Archaeological museum of Cividate Camuno. The remains with mosaic floors reveal how elegant the temple used to be.

CHIESA DI SANT’ANTONIO ABATE (CHURCH)
SANTUARIO DELLA VIA CRUCIS (SHRINE)
The church of St. Antonio Abate, in the historic centre of Breno, is one of the most significant examples of Camonica Valley Gothic style (14th century). The door was built during the Renaissance period. It contains works by da Cemmo, Callisto Piazza, and on the apse wall there are frescoes by Girolamo Romanino (16th century) that depict the biblical history of prophet Daniel.
Hosted in a building by the parish church, the 14 chapels of Via Crucis or Santa Crus in Cerveno represent one of the most significant examples of art and popular faith in the whole Alps. There are 198 real-size wooden and plaster statues carved in the 18th century, with 200 elements that narrate the passion of Christ.

These are two true Romanesque style gems in Camonica Valley (11th and 12th centuries). San Siro was built directly on the rock perched over the river and boasts a magnificent door, frescoes, and the crypt. Announced by the octagonal lantern, San Salvatore is a testament to the presence of Cluny monks.

This church is the most significant monument of the town of Edolo. By the Renaissance-style building stands a bell tower in Romanesque style built in recent years using old stones. Inside the church there is one of the best and most complete fresco cycles made by Paolo da Caylina the Young (1530-35). The colour tones are worth admiring.

Founded in 1974 through the dedication of a group of friends, the museum contains rests, artifacts, and documents relative to World War I, which in Camonica Valley is called “Guerra Bianca” because it was fought among the snow of the Adamello glacier. It is an important and well known centre of research and cultural preservation.
Built in the 16th century, the church stands on a small hill in the heart of the town. The façade, decorated with 1880 frescoes, hides precious Baroque woodwork inside, including the main altar made by the workshop of master carvers Domenico Ramus and Giovan Battista Zotti (18th century).
