Explore Our Towns: Butler
The birthplace of the Jeep! History and heritage surround the charming town of Butler, and preserving the past is important here.
In 1940, the U.S. Army sought a design for a 4WD, 40HP, 1,300lb reconnaissance vehicle capable of transporting soldiers and heavy artillery. The challenge was to produce a working prototype for a test run within 49 days. Only two companies responded to the request: The American Bantam Car Company of Butler, PA, and Willys-Overland Motors. American Bantam won the contract based on their delivery of a prototype vehicle in just 45 days. However, the American Bantam struggled to meet the Army's production demand of 75 vehicles per day, and the blueprints and contract went elsewhere. The Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival continues to honor and celebrate Butler as the Birthplace of the Jeep.
