Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival Celebrates 10 years in 2020 It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since more than one thousand Jeeps invaded Butler County to attend the very first Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival. Since then, the Festival has expanded beyond anyone’s wildest dreams and has quickly become one of the largest Jeep-only events in the nation. In fact, in 2019, Jeep owners from 32 states traveled to Butler County, the Jeep’s birthplace, to participate in the Festival’s many activities and attractions. The Friends of the Bantam Jeep Association is planning even more excitement for the 10th-anniversary event on June 12-14. Jeep owners who are participating in the Festival will have a chance to be part of some special activities that will only be available at the 2020 Festival. In addition, the popular Jeep History Exhibit will feature special Jeep models that have rarely been displayed together before. “Ten years is a huge milestone, and we are excited that the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival continues to be a place where Jeep enthusiasts from all over the nation gather together to share their passion with others who love Jeeps just as much as they do,” said Todd Wagner, president of the Friends of the Bantam Jeep Association. The Festival features many on-and-off-road activities for Jeep owners who register their Jeep to participate in the event. Activities are geared for vehicles straight off the lot as well as those that have been customized to tackle challenging off-road trails and obstacles. “Bantam really has something for everyone,” said Wagner. “Those who attend the Festival will see practically every Jeep ever made since the 1940s. There will be pristine Jeeps accessorized with shiny chrome parts and the latest lights as well as Jeeps covered in mud from attempting the Festival’s mud pit.”

Some of the Festival’s activities for registered Jeep owners include a Poker Run, Mystery Road Rally scavenger hunt, State Park Scenic Tour, Best of Bantam show, Jeep Playground obstacle course, and various trail rides. Those who don’t have Jeeps will have plenty to see as well. The Jeep History Exhibit features about 20 rare Jeeps along with the Festival’s Faces of Jeep display that showcases a museum-quality exhibition of Jeep grilles from several decades. It’s the largest display of Jeep grilles in the U.S. Those who appreciate military Jeeps that supported the U. S. Army in various wars will step back in time at the Military Encampment. Visitors can talk to individuals dressed in authentic military uniforms and see how soldiers lived during various wars. Other fun includes shopping at more than 150 vendors who travel to

the Festival from all over the United States to offer the latest Jeep parts, accessories and Jeep-themed merchandise. “If a guest isn’t a Jeep enthusiast when they walk through the gate, they are bound to become one after just a few hours at Bantam,” remarked Wagner. Other activities to enjoy are the Barbee Jeep Race where adults race each other down a hill in a child’s ride-on Jeep as well as Jeepardy games where enthusiasts can test their knowledge of Jeep trivia against other contestants. Take a step back in time with a visit to Historic Harmony, the site of western Pennsylvania’s first National Historic Landmark District. Like most, this quaint village will captivate you with its old brick and log buildings, unique shops, museums, and restaurants.

The Harmonists, who believed Christ’s return was imminent, adopted celibacy to remain spiritually pure, but this also ensured the group’s eventual demise. This charming town retains the old world architectural character of an old German village and includes more than 50 buildings, nine of which are owned by the nonprofit historical society and preservation group, Historic Harmony. Another belief of the Harmonists can be seen in their cemetery located just outside of town—you won’t find any grave markers for the approximately 100

vans City might be a small town, but it plays a big role in movie history. George Romero’s 1968 cult classic “Night of the Living Dead” was filmed here. In fact, the opening scene was shot in the Evans City Cemetery. Not long after that, Romero returned to Evans City in 1973 to film “The Crazies”, a movie in which the town was blown up!

The town of Mars dates back to 1792 when the first settler arrived in the area. The growth of the town came in spurts, however, it flourished in 1894 with the railroad coming through. Sprawling 16,725 acres of pure beauty, Moraine State Park is the third largest park in Pennsylvania and offers a variety of activities for year-round enjoyment like hiking, biking, boating, cross-country skiing, sledding, cabin rental and more! With nearly two-million visitors annually, the Park is Butler County’s biggest and most-visited attraction at any time of the year.

Moraine State Park Celebrates 50 Years in 2020 Moraine State Park’s 50th Anniversary celebration is set for 2020 and will bring a variety of events to park patrons throughout next year. Moraine Preservation Fund, the Moraine State Park Anniversary Committee, and Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau are collaborating to offer fun activities on land and water. “Hike Moraine” will kick off the celebration on New Year’s Day, and a Winterfest celebration will take place in February. The new double-decker “Nautical Nature” tour boat will launch on Lake Arthur in March, and as the weather breaks park patrons can enjoy Spring Wildflower Walks, Full Moon Paddles, and a unique Flag Day tribute. Guests also can experience everything the Park usually has to offer—just to name a few there’s boating, sailing, kayaking, swimming, paddle boarding, windsurfing, fishing, biking, and geocaching. Educational programs are always available at the park’s indoor facilities. Moraine State Park opened May 23, 1970 and sits across Brady, Clay, Franklin, Muddy Creek, and Worth townships in Butler County. #MoraineSP A Look Backâ&#x20AC;Ś Moraine State Park is not only a dynamic destination, but has a pretty unique story that started about 20,000 years ago when glaciers were present. When the glaciers finally retreated, they left behind accumulated debris, which is called a moraine; and how the park got its name. In the late 1800s, wells were drilled (and later abandoned) to extract oil and gas from the land. The rebirth of the land was a direct result of English-American engineer and conservationist, Dr. Frank Preston. He worked to form the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, which purchased the land. The mines were sealed and the oil and gas wells were capped. In 1968, the dam was completed and in 1970 Lake Arthur reached its full level. Moraine State Park was

Endless Activities Located in Portersville, the Park has become an oasis for outdoor recreation in Butler County, and is easily accessible off State Route 422 and I-79. The new off ramps along Route 422 and I-79 make it especially easy to get to the North Shore where youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find the Nautical Nature, an enclosed pontoon boat that offers guided cruises along Lake Arthur, bike trails, Lakeview beach and access to a variety of hiking trails and public boat launches. Hosting numerous events throughout the year, Moraine constantly attracts thousands of guests nationwide providing something for every outdoor enthusiast! The main feature of Moraine State Park is Lake Arthur. With over 3,000 acres of calm waters and 42 miles of shoreline, visitors can enjoy the lake annually with a variety of activities including fishing, boating, swimming, windsurfing and more! Another unique way to enjoy the lake is through standup paddleboarding. SurfSUP Adventures provides standup paddleboarding lessons, guiding, eco-tours, board rentals, and sales. Preston Park

et nature surround you at Preston Park’s 88-acre English garden, consisting of luscious woodlands, walking trails, fishing ponds, wildlife, numerous unique plants and more! This gorgeous oasis offers a variety of recreational opportunities that can be enjoyed for free. From hiking, fishing, crosscountry skiing, picnicking and birdwatching; Preston Park is the perfect place to photograph nature’s beauty or simply enjoy time outdoors. The park offers tree-shaded picnic tables, gently sloped, well-marked trails, and a dogfriendly trail. Preston Park also features occasional theatrical performances by local production companies with the popular “Shakespeare in the Park” performances (be sure to check your local listings for dates and

times). Other points of interest include the Geography Lesson, the Hacienda, the Iron Gates, and the Coppices; all with a unique story to tell. The Park also has 40 types of evergreen trees located in the Arboretum, making it the largest concentration of its kind east of the Mississippi. Named after Dr. Frank Preston, an English-born conservationist and expert in glass technology, he was instrumental in founding the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Dr. Preston lived on the grounds and utilized the space for his research. Formerly a private residence, Preston Park was a gift to Butler Township in 2008 from the late Jane and Dr. Frank Preston. His laboratory and home are on-site and are available for guided tours. The tour is available at no cost, but registration is required and spaces are limited.

Glade Run Lake

ocated in Middlesex Township, Glade Run Lake is a 52-acre manmade lake, surrounded by luscious woodlands and farmlands. Used for recreation, conservation, and education this beautiful lake offers fishing, motorless boating and has become a wonderful attraction for families and tourists alike. In 2011, the earthen dam was cracked and declared unsafe; the lake had to be drained. That same year, the Glade Run Lake Conservancy (GRLC) was formed. This nonprofit, grassroots community organization went to great lengths aiding in the park’s restoration. They restored the fish and avian population, created a 1.5 mile walking trail encompassing the lake, constructed a handicapped accessible fishing deck and more! Since its reopening in 2017, the park has been transformed into a gorgeous oasis and flourishing habitat where visitors can enjoy the great outdoors in a tranquil and peaceful setting.

Jennings Environmental Education Center

ocated in Slippery Rock, Jennings Environmental Education Center is one of Butler County’s most unique parks to visit. Situated on 300 acres, Jennings provides a combination of protected prairie and forest and is the only protected prairie system in Pennsylvania. Visitors can hike year round on their 5-mile trail system through various terrains or stroll through the 20-acre prairie ecosystem, home to distinctive prairie plants and the endangered Massasauga rattlesnake (don’t worry, they are shy). Not only can visitors hike along a variety of trails, but the Education Center provides information about the environment and covers topics like fossils, trees, wildflowers, ecosystems, maple sugaring and more. Visitors can learn more about this beautiful prairie and forest through their award-winning display! Exhibits can be viewed Monday through Friday from 8 AM-4 PM, and on weekends when programs are scheduled. But perhaps the most popular time to visit is during “Celebrate the Bloom”, a festival in July hosted annually by Jennings featuring the bloom of their spectacular prairie flower, Liatris Spicata or Blazing Star. This free event features nature explorations, engaging demonstrations, local artisans, food vendors and live entertainment.

This scenic trail spans 4,600 miles over eight states from North Dakota to Vermont, and it can be accessed right here in Butler County! The NCT is the longest National Scenic Trail in the National Trails System and is the only national trail to stretch west to east. Butler County is fortunate to have 265 miles of the trail in Western Pennsylvania. Winding throughout streams and rolling hills, the NCT is enjoyed year-round and runs through Jennings Environmental Education Center and Butler Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main attraction, Moraine State Park. Todd Nature Reserve

perated by the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, Todd Nature Reserve, features six miles of scenic hiking trails, three streams, a man-made pond and provides a plethora of opportunities for exploring and birding! Located in Sarver, Todd Nature Reserve consists of 334 acres

where visitors can take in the sights and sounds of nature all while enjoying tranquil walks along a variety of trails like their one-mile Loop Trail that runs around the circumference of the reserve or the Ravine Trail, which is their most difficult one and includes several small stream crossings.

Succop Nature Park

perated by the Western Pennsylvania Audubon Society, Succop Nature Park, is 50 acres of woodlands, gardens and lush meadows. Located in Penn Township, the property also contains two ponds, dogfriendly walking trails, and open natural spaces that can be used for a variety of outdoor activities and events. These areas offer a serene environment attracting visitors of all ages who seek to connect with birds and nature.

The area is known to be a habitat for a multitude of birds. In fact, over 180 species of birds have been found on-site, providing important habitat for the pileated woodpecker, scarlet tanager, and Kentucky warbler. On Friday mornings from April-September, the Audubon Society conducts naturalist-led free â&#x20AC;&#x153;Birds and

In 2019, about $3.5 million worth of renovations went into Succop Nature Park. Their barn from 1880 was transformed into an environmental education center with a state-of-the-art WindStax vertical wind turbine which generates 8%-12% of the total electricity for the site. Renovations to the T.W. Phillips Barn feature a large classroom on the lower-level, retail space, restrooms and an event space on the upper-level. Other new features at the park include a new parking lot and a nature play area.

More Walksâ&#x20AC;? through the reserve giving visitors the opportunity to spot other animals like deer, bears and unique species of plants. Todd Nature Reserve provides an exceptional experience for all outdoor lovers and is open yearround from dawn to dusk (except during deer hunting season).

Succop Nature Park was established for the purpose of providing an environmental and cultural education center for the community. They offer on-site classes open to the public, year-round naturalist-led free morning walks and more. One of the major events hosted by Succop is Maple Madness that takes place annually in March. During maple madness, visitors experience the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of maple sugaring as they embark on a guided hike throughout the park followed by a pancake brunch.

Alameda Park ocated in Butler, Alameda Park offers a variety of recreational activities and events throughout the year for residents and visitors alike.

Alameda Waterpark is a popular place to cool down on a hot summer day. Visitors can enjoy the Pirateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cove Splash Pad, enclosed tube slides, toddler zero entries, picnic tables, umbrellas and the diving well that features a rock wall, diving boards, and a drop slide.

Operated by Butler County Parks & Recreation Department, Alameda Park features playgrounds, picnic areas, numerous shelter facilities, a Dek Hockey rink, baseball fields, a community waterpark and is handicap accessible.

The parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most most talked-about addition is their 20-mile mountain bike and hiking trail system. Currently, there are about eight miles of trails that are complete with the remainder still under construction. The trails are appropriate for all

levels of riders and emphasize flow and fun over technical obstacles and rock gardens. Integrated into this mountain bike adventure are rolling contours, banked corners and berms. Washington’s Trail 1753 In 1753, the imperial nations of France and Great Britain and the Native Americans all claimed control of the Ohio Country, the area encompassing present-day western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Acting on orders from Virginia Governor Robert Dinwiddie, twenty-one-year-old George Washington embarked upon a dangerous expedition north from Williamsburg to deliver a diplomatic message to the French ordering them to evacuate the region. Already the French had erected three forts to reinforce their claim to the area: Fort Presque Isle (Erie, PA), Fort LeBoeuf (Waterford, PA) and Fort Machault (Franklin, PA). During his journey to the French forts in the winter of 1753-1754, young Washington encountered many hazards. There were excessive rains and vast quantities of snow. He was nearly shot by an Indian guide and nearly drowned in the icy waters of the Allegheny River near present-day Pittsburgh. When Washington returned to Williamsburg in January 1754, he reported to the governor that the French intended to remain entrenched in the Ohio Country. This marked the beginning of the military struggle known as the French and Indian War. Blue road signs with Washington’s silhouette mark a commemorative trail throughout western Pennsylvania. (The trail is considered commemorative, as sections of the actual path are open to debate.)
