The Return of Tourism
The travel and tourism industry provides an unprecedented value for our local economy, businesses and personal wellbeing. It’s the fabric of our culture and generates growth in innumerable ways. In the midst of an ever-changing environment, local businesses have adapted and our community has supported one another!
Over the course of a year, we’ve seen the resiliency of an industry that was on the verge of collapsing. Many businesses have restructured and found ways to “make it work” during a very challenging time. We applaud those who have shown up, worked hard and provided exceptional customer service. It's very exciting to see that things are going in a more positive direction, and we look forward to welcoming more visitors to Butler County. You’ll find one-of-a-kind attractions, restaurants and breweries, charming towns, a variety of tasty trails, and discover unique experiences only found in the gentle rolling hills of Butler County.
This year’s guide focuses on the self-navigated trails in Butler County, hands-on experiences and the number of ways to enjoy outdoor activities at our parks. Whether you're a firsttime visitor or a long-standing resident, I hope you enjoy exploring all that Butler County has to offer.

Washington’s Trail 1753
A Historic Driving Trail
In 1753, the imperial nations of France and Great Britain and the Native Americans all claimed control of the Ohio Country, the area encompassing present-day western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Acting on orders from Virginia Governor Robert Dinwiddie, twenty-one-yearold George Washington embarked upon a dangerous expedition north from Williamsburg to deliver a diplomatic message to the French ordering them to evacuate the region. Already, the French had erected three forts to reinforce their claim to the area: Fort Presque Isle (Erie, PA), Fort LeBoeuf (Waterford, PA) and Fort Machault (Franklin, PA).
During his journey to the French forts in the winter of 1753-1754, young Washington encountered many hazards. There were excessive rains and vast quantities of snow. He was nearly shot by an Indian guide and nearly drowned in the icy waters of the Allegheny River near present-day Pittsburgh. When Washington returned to Williamsburg in January 1754, he reported to the governor that the French intended to remain entrenched in the Ohio Country. This marked the beginning of the military struggle known as the French and Indian War.
Blue road signs with Washington’s silhouette mark a commemorative trail throughout western Pennsylvania. (The trail is considered commemorative, as sections of the actual path are open to debate.)
Relive Washington’s first military expedition with Butler County Tourism’s Washington’s Trail Brochure, which will guide you along the drive-it-yourself tour, offering interesting history about this mission. There are also plenty of historical and natural attractions along the way!

Nearly two million people visit the park each year, and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and its Bureau of State Parks chose Moraine as one of the “25 Must-See Pennsylvania State Parks.” Visitors often enjoy popular activities like fishing, hiking, biking, boating, disc golf and more!
Fishing
Cast your line at Lake Arthur’s warmwater fishery at Moraine State Park. With 3,225 acres, Lake Arthur offers vast options for fishermen. You’ll find many boat launches and great fishing spots. Boats up to 20 hp motors are permitted, and common species include Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Channel Catfish, Black Crappie, and Bluegill.
Disc GolfIng
Enjoy an exciting game of disc golf at Lakeview Disc Golf Course located on the North Shore. This 18-hole disc golf course is a par 66 championship level course that offers spectacular views and scenery while challenging disc golfers with a strenuous but rewarding workout. The course hosts many tournaments, and it was used as part of the 2015 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships!
Biking
Take in amazing views as you pedal along the park’s scenic 7-mile paved bike path located on the North Shore. This trail is not a loop and winds its way throughout prairies, bubbling creeks within the forest and alongside the shoreline of Lake Arthur. It can be accessed at Spoke House Bike Rental and many other places in the Lakeview Beach and Watts Bay Marina areas. The North Shore also features a 6-mile loop trail for mountain bikes, which was named one of the most technical mountain bike trails in the world!
Hiking
Explore the park by hiking through 38 miles of trails that wander through various terrains and along Lake Arthur. The Glacier Ridge trail is very popular, as it’s designated as part of the North Country National Scenic Trail. Enjoyed year-round, these trails feature amazing views and provide options for all skill levels. For your safety, please stay on the trails.
Boating
Another favorite activity is boating, and there are many options at Moraine State Park. From canoes and kayaks to sailboats and pontoon boats, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Lake Arthur is one of few places in western Pennsylvania where you can go sailing and windsurfing! In fact, Barber Point, near Lakeview Beach, is a popular area for windsurfing due to stronger winds and sparse boat traffic. When conditions are ideal, races, regattas and sailing instruction classes are held throughout the summer.
The park has nine public boat launches and boat rentals as well. For non-motorized boats, consider launching at Pleasant Valley on the South Shore. The North Shore has a wonderful launch at the McDanels Area. For a truly peaceful experience, paddle in the cove past the cabins.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Stand-up paddleboarding, also known as “SUP,” is a beginner and family friendly pursuit and one of the best ways to experience Pennsylvania’s beautiful waterways. You will be provided with all the necessary equipment and can look forward to sharing the experience with SurfSUP Adventures’ expert guides and instructors.
Swimming
Make a splash on Lake Arthur! Moraine State Park features two beaches: Pleasant Valley Beach and Lakeview Beach. The Pleasant Valley Beach is located on the South Shore and is a 1,200-foot turf and sand beach with a sand volleyball court. Lakeview Beach is on the North Shore and is a 550-foot sand beach.

The boat’s name recognizes Dr. Frank W. Preston, an amateur geologist and naturalist known as the “man behind the park.” Preston saw the significance of the area formed by glaciers. Preston formed the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy which purchased the land, and helped make it what it is today.
