Welcome home!
Home is not mentioned often in a travel and tourism industry which encourages you to visit, to move, to get outside, to try new foods, and meet new people.
Dealing with a pandemic means eventually returning to normal. It seems travelers are taking longer trips and are willing to venture farther. But if there has been anything to learn it’s that change can be dramatic and instant.
Maybe that’s why our valuable time is better off away from home and spent exploring and traveling – learning about different cultures and making new friends.
In Butler County you’ll find great outdoor activities at our spacious parks and lakes. Its beautiful landscape is perfect for camping and events like festivals, fairs, outdoor concerts and a burgeoning agritourism industry. Additionally, you’ll find a supply of top-notch restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries and great brew pubs you’ll never want to leave. And that’s OK, because Butler County has great places to stay.
But the best thing Butler County has to offer is its people itself. Friendly. Helpful. Caring. And welcoming. That’s what makes it special. To us, It’s what makes Butler County home. Welcome to our home – make it yours for a couple of days!

WASHINGTON’S TRAIL 1753
A HISTORIC DRIVING TRAIL
In 1753, George Washington headed a diplomatic expedition to order the French to evacuate the Ohio Country – now present-day western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. The journey included Washington’s near drowning and being nearly shot by an Indian guide in today’s Butler County. The French, however, refused to leave, signaling the start of the French and Indian War.
Relive the Butler County portion of this expedition on Washington’s Trail 1753, a drive-it-yourself tour marked by blue road signs with Washington’s silhouette. The trail is commemorative as sections of the actual path are debated, but offers interesting history about this mission.

Races, regattas and sailing instruction classes are held in season and there’s lots of canoes, kayaks, sailboats and pontoon boats as well. Take a boat tour of Lake Arthur on Preston's Pearl, operated by Moraine Preservation Fund.
FISHING

KEEP IT LOCAL: FARMERS MARKETS & CSAS
Eat seasonally and locally through CSAs and farm markets. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. You can invest in local agriculture by enjoying top quality products when you create a partnership with a local farm. Plan to eat an array of whole foods and fresh products this year by signing up for a CSA today.
The perks of CSA programs are endless. CSAs promote access to healthy foods, as well as strengthen sustainable food systems. By purchasing a CSA, you support the local economy by investing in a farm ahead of their season. You can also grow and develop a relationship with the farm by learning more about their processes and what they grow, become exposed to new vegetables and ways of cooking, and have the opportunity to eat fresh food with amazing flavor and vitamin benefits.
harvest, buy seed, fix farm equipment, and more. This shared risk creates a sense of unity between farmers and community members. Items vary throughout the season and include products such as ears of corn, a quart of strawberries, grass fed beef, and so much more!
There are several places in Butler County to purchase CSA’s
Harvest Valley Farms grows over 160 different varieties of fruits and vegetables using sustainable practices and picking as much daily produce to market within 24 hours. Their 22-week CSA program runs from the beginning of June to November and the community can pick between a full or half share. Pickup each week is set up like a farmer’s market, where local members have the ability to personally choose their vegetables. In addition, two products that have reached the main season crop are mandatory choices each week. This gives members the opportunity to choose products, as well as try vegetables that are in season. Harvest Valley also has a cheese CSA, as well as an Organic Shade Grown Coffee CSA that are partnerships with other local businesses around Pittsburgh. Each week, CSA members receive a weekly email newsletter highlighting the “vegetable of the week,” a recipe, and updates on the farm, crops, and employees.
in your share, which creates an opportunity for you to experience a variety of products throughout the season. All CSA Members receive optional add-ons to purchase every Monday via email with items such as a dozen eggs, bars of homemade soap, one of Lisa’s homemade salads, or more. In addition, members receive weekly recipes that can help you learn to use the different items in your share that you may not be familiar with such as leeks or simply give you inspiration for a new way to prepare a dish.
Here are other places that offer farm markets seasonally or year-round. Visit our farm market page for more information and support local agriculture

How A CSA Works
A local farm offers a certain number of “shares” to the public, sort of like a subscription service, where consumers purchase a share for farm products like vegetables and eggs.
There is shared risk within the CSA model which means that members pay up front for the whole season. By investing in the season, you are enabling your local farmer to prepare the fields for
Freedom Farms has the goal to provide fresh, nutritionally dense food and familyfriendly service to the local community. Their 24-week CSA program runs from May to October every year. They offer three types of CSAs: meat, produce, and dairy, as well as the choice between a full season or a single season CSA giving you options for what is right for your family. The CSA share is modeled, where you simply receive the freshest and most bountiful products each week and you are not able to pick and choose what is

CAMPING’S POPULARITY CONTINUES TO GROW
Butler County is full of familyfriendly campgrounds
Todd Wehr remembers the summer of 1975 well. Wehr, a college student at the time, and his family were working hard, determined to open their new business –Bear Run Campground.
“We worked throughout the summer,” Wehr recalled. “Our goal was to open Labor Day Weekend. It was quite the test but we got it done.”
Sitting adjacent to Moraine State Park, the campground has grown extensively over the past 47 years, from 100-sites on opening day to 300 today. Bear Run is just one of many successful outdoor recreational or camping stories in Butler County. And while Labor Day will be here in less than a week, there is still more than a month left in Pennsylvania’s camping season.
The old business adage of location, location, location, fits the Butler County camping industry perfectly, as it has a near perfect mix when it comes to create a growing outdoor recreation industry. The region’s blend of green space and campgrounds, combined with a healthy dose of lakes, streams, hot fishing spots, some great attractions and wonderful restaurants makes for lots of family fun.
“The combination is fantastic,” said Jack Cohen, President of the Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau. “Butler County, Moraine State Park offer so much outdoor recreation – boating, fishing, hiking, and biking. And the great thing is we have so many great campgrounds that can support this type of traffic.”
Outdoor recreation is, indeed, big business in Butler, throughout Pennsylvania, and the U.S.
An economic study conducted by Southwick Associates for the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, showed that in 2016, 370,000 Pennsylvania jobs were supported by
outdoor recreation activities
such as biking, camping, and off-roading.
The same study found that campgrounds in the commonwealth hosted just more than 3 million campers and produced almost 90,000 jobs, generating more than $3.8 million in salaries. That could buy a lot of s’mores.
And while the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and high inflation are reported daily, camping is one industry that has seen growth over the past 2-plus years. That’s on top of the growth camping has seen over the past decade.
According to the 2022 North American Camping report sponsored by Kampgrounds of America, Inc. the popularity of camping has grown from a pre-pandemic level of 42 million households taking at least one trip per year in 2019 to 48.2 million in 2020 and to nearly 57 million last year.
activities, Wehr said campers should not feel obligated to participate in all of them.
“We’re not out there at dawn blowing a whistle and waking everyone,” Wehr laughed. “Because many campgrounds have so many activities, there’s as much to do at campgrounds as you want to do. But we’re right next to Moraine with Lake Arthur and Butler County has so much to offer, so campers often explore outside the campground all day.”
Wehr says that over the past 47 years, the basics of camping have stayed the same but, as it is with most industries, technology has made an impact. Larger RVs with more bells and whistles are an obvious change. Additionally, according to both Wehr and the KOA report, having wi-fi helps today’s remote worker stay connected – and stay longer.
Still, as much as things change some things never change.
“Every day brings a new situation,” Wehr said. “But we work collectively as a staff, utilize technology, to make sure everyone’s camping experience is enjoyable.”
Campgrounds in the Region
• Bear Run Campground
That trend is not lost on Wehr.
“Since COVID, many new people have started to camp,” Wehr said. “Overwhelmingly, they enjoy it. Our staff is extremely hospitable and has adapted to better understand the needs of inexperienced campers.”
Like many campgrounds in the area, Bear Run has many amenities such as a swimming pool, cabins, a large general store, recreation center, a clubhouse, and even covered basketball courts. And although there are lots of scheduled

Begin your day in Slippery Rock where you can get all of the necessary supplies at The Birdwatcher’s Store. Not only is the store itself intriguing, but you can begin birdwatching right there. It’s located on a 4-acre sanctuary with birdfeeders outside. It has a huge back window and they provide binoculars for visitors to borrow. They also host birdwatching excursions.
Moraine State Park in Portersville is a great place to spot our feathered friends. The park consists of 16,725 acres and features over 42 miles of scenic shoreline. Bald Eagles, loons, warblers, heron and Osprey are among the many species that can be found throughout the Park.
Osprey are often seen flying over Lake Arthur. Once extirpated from western Pennsylvania, these “fish hawks” have been reintroduced to Moraine through a hacking program begun in 1993. The first Osprey pair to nest along Lake Arthur as a result of the reintroduction effort raised three young in 1996. Bald Eagles have also been spotted nesting in the park.
Popular places for birding at Moraine include the waterfowl observation deck along old Route 422 (accessible from Route 528) and on the upper deck of Preston’s Pearl, an enclosed pontoon boat where passengers learn about Moraine State Park’s history and wildlife. Preston’s Pearl is operated by the Moraine Preservation Fund (MPF) and cruises are offered from Memorial Day Weekend through October.
Viewers can also take advantage of a webcam featuring a continuous Live Stream of an active Osprey nest along the North Shore of Lake Arthur. This osprey webcam is supported by MPF and the Tourism Bureau, and it allows users 24-hour viewing access available April through September.
An abundance of bird species can be found among the prairie and woodlands at Jennings Environmental Education Center in Slippery Rock. Goldfinches, Song and Field Sparrows, swallows, bluebirds, flycatchers and Woodcocks are among the many birds that can be spotted throughout the center’s 300 acres. Visit Jennings’ prairie area on spring evenings at dusk, to witness the Woodcock’s amazing courtship ritual! The oak-hickory-cherry forest surrounding the prairie features a high density of breeding Carolina Wrens and Blue-Winged Warblers are found on the brushy edges of the prairie.
Jennings Environmental Education Center has been certified an Audubon Society Wildlife Sanctuary since 1999 and is noted
especially for its breeding population of Cerulean Warbler.
Together, Jennings Environmental Education Center and Moraine State Park cover 17,025 acres that have been designated as an Important Bird Area #12 by the National Audubon Society and monitored by volunteers of the Bartramian Audubon Society.
Other spots for great birding include Todd Nature Reserve and Succop Nature Park, both operated by the Western Pennsylvania Audubon Society. They feature wooded trails and offer free guided birdwatching walks throughout the week.
A unique day trip includes a visit to Stormy Oaks Nature Conservatory in Valencia where Wildbird Recovery, a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center provides services to birds and educational programming. Check out their events, storytimes, and education programs to learn more about their work with birds.

Still Having a Blast After 73 Years.
Our founder, Robert S. Kellner discovered his passion for pyrotechnics as a boy with a toy black-powder cannon. Ultimately, his zeal led him to open Kellner’s Fireworks in 1947.
Every day, he brought the words “use with adult supervision” to life for his young son, Bob. Young Bob Kellner very likely handled every firework known to man by the age of ten, followed in his father’s footsteps and took over the business in 1987.
Today, Bob’s love for fireworks is only rivaled by his love for his wife, Beth and his daughters, Grace and Hope who all play important roles in the family business. The whole crew works under the watchful eye of their cat, Lucky who is also in charge of customer relations.
CELEBRATING VETERANOWNED BUSINESSES OF BUTLER COUNTY
When you visit Butler County, you can discover and support many eclectic small businesses from bookstores to breweries, many of which have unique backgrounds. Read on to hear the stories of Butler County business owners who have served our country, and are now serving our community.
Buttercup Woodlands Campground Owner Ed
worked on a carrier ship as an engineer in Norfolk. During his two years on the ship, Tanski became a third class petty officer and was sent to Nahbe, Vietnam, where he served for a total of 23 months.
“I got to see a lot of strange things on the ship,” Ed said.
However, serving in such a controversial war meant Tanski did not have the hero’s welcome home after his six years of service.
Tanski says that his military experience directly influences how he runs his campground. “It’s the military discipline that helps you run your business a little stronger,” stated Tanski “because in military you’re not only taught the discipline side but you’re taught a little bit of administration you’re taught a little bit of finance, how to handle things personally “
As to why Tanski wanted his business in Butler County his answer is simple: “It’s just a unique place to live,”
Keep up on the campground’s upcoming events or to learn more, follow them on Facebook.

The 55 acres of green space offer amenities to fit any level of adventurer ranging from tent and RV campsites to rustic cabins fitted with electricity and AC. The grounds also have a host of recreational areas including a pool, basketball and volleyball courts, a dancehall, and an arcade. The camp opened in 1977 and has been a community favorite since.
Campground owner Ed Tanski was drafted in 1967 during the Vietnam War. As part of the Navy, he attended basic training at the Great Lakes Illinois base. Tanski served as a drill instructor, then
“We had to come home in civilian clothes, not let anyone know we were military,” Tanski recalled “You didn’t talk about being in the service as you came out.”
While adjusting to civilian life, Tanski worked as a truck driver and went to school in the evenings, earning himself a degree in engineering. In 1988 Tanski utilized some veteran programs to begin his own hydraulic hose business, which he ran for nearly 10 years. Tanski’s introduction to campground management came through a connection with another local veteran.
“A veteran that I had known had built a campground near where my shop was and we made a deal and I bought the campground,” said Tanski “Here I am 26 years later,”

Burgh’ers is co-owned by Neil Glausier, who served 12 years in the United States Army, working as a civilian avionics/electronics prototype, and later worked as a field and test engineer
As to why Glausier thinks Zelienople and Butler County is the perfect home for his business, the answer is simple. “(It) seemed like the right time and place for us.”
Glausier joined Burgh’ers Brewing in 2017. Formerly known as just “Burgh’ers”, owner/head chef Fiore Moletz brought on Glasier as his-beer expert and moved the business to Zelienople the same year. They have since expanded to a second location in Lawrenceville.
Glausier says his experience serving in the army has helped him be a better business owner, teaching him to value attention to detail and placing priority on motivating his staff. The military mindset was also essential to helping Glausier and his staff quickly adapt to challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Campground owner Denny Quigley served four years as a jet engine technician in the Air Force. He says his service helped make him someone who prepares for everything, which is essential when running a campground.
“My military background taught me to be prepared, to plan ahead, to do my best, to take pride in everything I do. Military preparedness meant we had to have those engines ready for the B52 bombers, the KC 135 tankers and the C130 transports planes, no excuses, work as team and get it done.” Quigley says “You can’t do it by yourself, you have to get your staff to buy into the mission. Our mission is to serve our customers.”
Quigley grew up in Cranberry Township, lived in the Callery borough of Butler County for 22 years, and says he was lucky to find the Kozy Rest Campground. He was inspired by his children to make it into what it is today.
“When my two kids were young we started camping and we traveled all around trying different campgrounds and as I sat around campfires I thought ‘I could do this’.” recalled Quigley “I was in the auto parts industry and it was changing, so it was now or never to take the leap again into being self employed.”
Deciding to take on Kozy Park was a leap of faith for Quigley, but one he says he’s glad he took. “I did some research, sold everything I owned and rolled the dice. Here I am 22 years later with a very rewarding business.”
Achieve your childhood dream of having a picnic with Yogi Bear™ by planning a trip to stay at Jellystone Park at Kozy Rest. Options include RV and tent sites, cabins, and “glamping” in a yurt. During your stay, there will be activities for the entire family, every weekend the campground has a new theme. This campground has the reputation to back it up, receiving recognition as “The Park of the Year” five times in a row. (LSI) inspectors.

Explore a variety of PA brewed craft beer and seasonal lunch and dinner menus at this Harmony brewery. Some of the innovative beer flavors concocted and sold here include a brewery take on strawberry-pretzel salad and minty-green shamrock shake. The restaurant and brewery is also known for its pop-culturethemed trivia nights.
Shubrew was opened in 2013 by Zachary and Erika Shumaker. Zach developed his interest in craft beer during his time serving in the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, where he frequented a local craft brewery and eventually became a line cook.
Zach Shumaker says his passion for brewing and beer making was born from his time in the service. “If I hadn’t joined the Marine Corps I probably wouldn’t have experienced the west-coast craft beer scene which encouraged my love of brewing and craft beer.” stated Shumaker, who says his experience serving helped him to run his brewery through tough
times, such as the coronavirus pandemic shutdown. “My experience in the military has taught me to react quickly and make informed, educated decisions to adjust the business. I feel like I’m able to adapt and overcome most situations based on what I was taught, which was especially helpful during the pandemic.”
When choosing where to open up their business, the Schumaker’s chose Zelienople for two reasons. “We liked the location and hometown feel of Zelienople.” said Zach “I also grew up in Cranberry Township and was familiar with the area since I graduated from Seneca (Valley Senior High School).”
Shubrew’s popularity pushed them to move to a bigger location, across the street, in 2019. In 2020 they converted their old space into an asian cuisine inspired restaurant General Shu’s Chinese Fare & Taproom.

Cranberry Township is an ideal place to call home, to run a business, or just to hang out. With easy access to everything, it’s a familyoriented community with a forward-thinking outlook and a positive energy that’s reflected in its people, shops, green spaces and businesses.
Throughout western Pennsylvania, Cranberry Township is considered a new community, and in many respects it is. But Cranberry was actually incorporated more than 200 years ago, in 1804. Artifacts of its past, including a one-room schoolhouse next to the Municipal Center, have been meticulously documented and restored by the Township’s historical society.
Cranberry includes just over 23 square miles and a population of more than 30,000 – up from less than 15,000 in 1990. One reason for that rapid growth has been its prime location. Situated at the intersection of two major Interstate highways, I-79 and the PA Turnpike, Cranberry is easily accessible from anywhere in the region.

Where your peace of mind is always top of mind.
We’re here to increase the value of you.
A great bank is more than an account or an app. It’s a team of people. Taking problems off your shoulders. Giving shape to your goals. Working behind the scenes so your success, no matter how you define it, stays front and center.
We try harder so you don’t have to.
Effort. We define it as doing what it takes to make something happen, even when it’s not easy. It’s the difference between worry and relief. Between putting something off and getting something done. And it’s what takes you from being happy with your bank to being truly satisfied.
We talk with you. Not at you. A lot of banks do a lot of talking about their products. At Northwest, we do a lot
of listening. Our goals are driven by outcomes, not new accounts. In other words, all that matters to us is that we’re doing what you need us to do. That’s why we take the time to talk, listen and truly understand your situation.
We don’t leave customer service to technology. Whether you need to pay a bill online or make a mobile deposit, these days, it’s important for banking to come to you. But the convenience of technology should never be a substitute for true customer service. And when you need a deeper conversation, we’re available-online, over the phone, and in person.

The Butler-Freeport Community Trail is a railtrail, preserving the route of Butler County’s first railroad (1871), the Western Pennsylvania Railroad, which connected the City of Butler to the Allegheny River port of Freeport. As a rails-to-trails project, the 21-mile trail offers a level, natural crushed limestone surface with a gradual uphill grade as it travels north (barely noticeable to walkers) and the converse downhill grade as it travels south (greatly enjoyed by bicyclists). Dogs are welcome but required to be on a leash and under the control of the person walking them on the trail.
Near the Herman trailhead, step from the trail into Derailleur Bike Shop Café, which offers wholesome food and refreshing beverages, along with bike rentals, maintenance, repair, parts and gear.

Driving the Future while Remembering the Past.
W. L. Roenigk is the largest privately-owned school bus company in western Pennsylvania. Despite our size, we maintain a small family-owned atmosphere with both our employees and the school districts we serve.
Founded in 1945 by William L. Roenigk Sr., the company is now in its 77th year and is operated by three generations of family members. It is not a secret that hard work, superior service to our school
districts, and respect for our employees are the reasons for our longevity. While some may think that bigger is better, we believe that providing a safe, personalized operation to the best of our abilities is far more important. Being the biggest is an honor, but being the best is what we do every day.
Over the years, we have expanded from our main location in Sarver, PA to close to a dozen locations throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. We are focused in the counties of Butler, Allegheny, Armstrong and Westmoreland and serve over
20 school districts within that area. We are always looking for qualified individuals to join our family as CDL bus drivers, van drivers, and monitors/aides. Please see our list of locations to find one near you.

Butler County covers 795 square miles and within that expanse are miles of roads that are home to some unusual sights. Among those are two cemeteries with different distinctions, a spaceship, a toy store that resembles a stealth bomber, many murals, a replica of the Brooklyn Bridge, a giant Snowman, and so much more.
Let’s start this tour of roadside attractions where life’s journey ends – a cemetery. Just off the Zelienople exit of Interstate 79 (I-79) on Pennsylvania State Route 68, sits the small hamlet of Harmony, a town founded in 1804 by the Harmony Society of German Lutheran Separatists.
Just a few feet off Route 68, on a small hillside, sits a grassy area surrounded by stone walls. Inside the walls rests about 100 Harmonists, but only one burial marker and, to see that, you have to push a 1-ton, revolving stone gate that serves as its entrance and is amazingly easy to move. A historical marker stands right beside the cemetery making it an easy find.
It’s only a short ride on Route 68 East to Evans City and the next cemetery where life never seems to end. The Evans City Cemetery is where the opening scenes of the horror classic “Night of the Living Dead” was filmed. The famous chapel and headstones are there, just be respectful when snapping pictures.
From here find Mars/Evans City Rd. to take your trip to astronomical heights by visiting Mars! That’s right, Mars, Pa., is just down the road from Evans City. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see the spaceship in the middle of town! It’s the perfect spot for selfies!
Although there are several different theories on how Mars earned its name, a popular one
attractions
is that it was shortened from the last name of its first postmaster, Samuel Marshall. However it happened, the name suits the borough well. The local high school athletic teams are called the “Fightin’ Planets,” and the town even celebrates its namesake’s journey around the sun with a Mars New Year’s Celebration.
The town’s name drew so much attention that in 2015 even NASA took notice and celebrated Mars New Year with residents and provided three days of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) activities.
To keep this roadshow going we’ll jet north on Route 8, just outside of the City of Butler, where you will see a steel-structured toy store reminiscent of a stealth bomber. bills itself “the world’s coolest toy store,” continues its stealth theme inside the intriguing front doors and on to a shopping experience you won’t soon forget.
If you want to take a break and stretch your legs you’ll be able to do that after a short ride to downtown Butler, where you can take an easy, self-guided walking tour of The Great Walls of Butler mural is a representation of people, places and products
may continue to play an important role in the city’s history. The murals transform the town with old-fashioned wall advertisements.
Head west to the town of Zelienople for murals both inside – at the Kaufman Tavern, Local Boutique Kids 16063 – and outside at Della Terra and Burghers. Zelienople is loaded with lots of good restaurants and great shops as well.
If architectural art is more your style, then Downtown’s Butler Historical District has you covered. Make sure you’re looking up at the southwest corner of Main and Jefferson Streets and you’ll see some gargoyles that are keeping an eye on you from above.
But maybe you’re just interested in architecture. If so, Saxonburg is the place for you. Located in the south-eastern corner of Butler County, the borough was founded in 1832 by John Roebling and his older brother. Roebling, a civil engineer, invented wire rope (or cable), which was essential in his design of New York’s Brooklyn Bridge.
The town is so proud of its founder that you can find a replica of the Brooklyn Bridge at the Saxonburg Museum where you can arrange a narrated tour.
There is also a small suspension walking bridge featuring wire rope behind the left field fence at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park in Downtown Butler. In its heyday in the 1930’s and 40’s, Pullman Park and Butler served as a New York Yankees minor league affiliate.
Hall of Fame pitcher Whitey Ford played one full season at Pullman, and legends Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, saw action there when the Yankees visited their farm teams in exhibition games. Hall of Famer and Negro League slugger Josh Gibson was said to have hit the farthest home run out of Pullman.
Today, Pullman Park is the home of the Butler Blue Sox, an amateur baseball team consisting of local collegiate players. It also hosts high school baseball and other tournaments throughout the season.
If you want to cool off after a day of sitting in the sun, head northwest, just south of Moraine State Park and visit The Snowman. He’s quite large, and next to him, you’re quite small. But this 13-foot unmeltable tribute to coolness serves 21 flavors of shaved ice. All made with 100% cane sugar and gluten-free.
Other Butler County Roadside Attractions
The Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport is where Amelia Earhardt took instrument training and had fuel tanks installed on her plane as she prepared for her 1932 solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. Today, the airport features an Apache helicopter in its parking lot. Amelia, no doubt, would’ve rocked that!
We’re not so sure why there are large, ominous samurai sculptures at the intersection of Three Degree and Renfrew roads in Penn Township, we’re just thrilled that someone put them there.
Although only approximately 400 drive-in movie theaters still operate in the US, Butler County’s Starlight Drive-In has been going strong since its opening in 1958. Located just on the outskirts of Butler on Route 8 north, Starlight has three screens that show double features in season and operates a flea market on Sundays.
The Harmony Inn, the building with a mustache (you have to see it) is one of many great restaurants in Butler County. Owned by the same group that owns and operates North Country Brewing, it’s a great spot for dinner, craft brews like Stinky Hippie, and get-togethers. However, be prepared that your soiree may be crashed by spirits – and not of the alcoholic type. Located in the Historic District of Harmony, tales of strange noises, moving objects, and friendly ghosts haunting the Inn have existed for years!
Speaking of North Country Brewing, it’s just a quick drive up I-79 to Slippery Rock, to the old barn, funeral home, cabinet shop that is now an extremely popular brew pub. Built in the early 1800’s by the Uber family as a barn, the building transformed to a funeral home and cabinet shop until Jodi and Bob McCafferty bought it and brought the interior wood work back to life.
This list could go on and on because there are great breweries, bakeries, coffee shops, shops, restaurants and parks throughout the nearly 800 square miles that make up Butler County. So take your time and enjoy the sights over a couple of weekends. We aren’t going anywhere and we’ll see you further on up the road.

Please use caution and watch for traffic along the road. Please note: The parking area is located on the Miller Woods tract, owned and managed by Slippery Rock University. The southern parcel of the Natural Area is accessible only from the creek.
Description : Wolf Creek Narrows Natural Area is particularly known for its spectacular display of spring wildflowers. An active floodplain, mature northern hardwood forest, and scenic cliffs make this property one of WPC’s most popular.
When visiting Wolf Creek Narrows, please remember:
Only foot-traffic is permitted.
Camping and campfires are prohibited.
If you carry it in, carry it out.
Dogs must be on a leash or otherwise kept under control at all times.
Collecting (animals, plants, rocks, etc.) without permission is prohibited.
It is believed that the steep, narrow gorge of Wolf Creek Narrows originally formed when the ceiling of an ice-age cave eroded and collapsed due to runoff from the melting glacier. The site now consists of a high -quality stream meandering through towering 50-foot cliffs. These natural processes, including annual flooding and icescouring, as well as limited human activities, have resulted in diverse natural communities.
Recreational activities: From the trailhead and kiosk, a 1.5-mile loop footpath begins by leading upstream over level terrain to the point where the creek is pinched between rocky bluffs. The trail then climbs steeply along the sloping shoulder of the gorge’s eastern flank, meanders through an upland deciduous forest, and then descends back to Wolf Creek just upstream from the starting point. The trail is moderately-difficult , but suitable for families with children.
The mixture of riparian and upland communities provides habitat for a variety of wildlife .
Birds include belted kingfisher, Louisiana waterthrush, wood thrush, and the occasional osprey or bald eagle.
Small, isolated pools of water provide breeding habitat for amphibians. Abundant logs on the forest floor offer cover for salamanders and snakes.
Hunting and fishing are permitted in accordance with state regulations. Please exercise caution and wear blaze orange during hunting season.
